Abstract

Evidence of the production of the Ds∗-(2111) meson in v μ Ne collisions is presented. The Ds∗- production rates the Ds−→φπ− branching fraction is estimated to be (2.3±0.7) × 10−3 of all charged currents having a hadronic mass W above 3 GeV.

Abstract

The limits on the parameters of thevμ→vτ oscillations are obtained in the E-564 hybrid experiment: Δm2≦4.5 eV2 and sin2(2θ)≦6.0·10−2 (90% CL). A possibility of direct observation of τ-lepton decays in the nuclear emulsion vertex detector allowed the sensitivity of this experiment to the parameters of the oscillations to be increased.

Abstract

Backward emitted protons with momentump>0.3 GeV/c in interactions of neutrino in the energy range 10–200 GeV with photoemulsion nuclei were investigated. Energy spectrum slope parameter of backward protons was measured to beT0=48.9±7.9 MeV. TheA-dependence power index of relative mean yield of backward protons was found to bea=0.68±0.12. A drop in the mean yield of backward protons at the four momentum squared over ∼15 (GeV/c)2 (the neutrino energy over ∼50 GeV) was observed.

Abstract

The influence of the efficiency of muon detection by hodoscopic scintillation counters on the precision of the muon range reconstruction in a detector is analyzed. The precision and systematic bias of a range estimate do not depend on the counters efficiency starting, approximately, from 60%.

Abstract

We have developed a method to separate ν n and ν p interactions from antineutrino-neon interactions by using the final state electric charge. We present the distributions of the scaling variables x and y for ν n and ν p interactions separately , along with the ν n and ν p cross section ratios as a function of x and y. We obtain a total ν n to ν p cross section ratio of 0.45± 0.08. Our results are consistent with the predictions of the simple quark parton model.

Abstract

The cross section of the quasi-elastic reactions $$\bar v_\mu p \to \mu ^ + \Lambda (\Sigma ^0 )$$ in the energy range 5–100 GeV is determined from Fermilab 15′ bubble chamber antineutrino data. TheQ 2 analysis of quasi-elastic Λ events yieldsM A=1.0±0.3 GeV/c2 for the axial mass value. With zero µΛ K 0 events observed, the 90% confidence level upper limit $$\sigma (\bar v_\mu p \to \mu ^ + \Lambda {\rm K}^0 )< 2.0 \cdot 10^{ - 40} cm^2 $$ is obtained. At the same time, we found that the cross section of reaction $$\bar v_\mu p \to \mu ^ + \Lambda {\rm K}^0 + m\pi ^0 $$ is equal to $$\left( {3.9\begin{array}{*{20}c} { + 1.6} \\ { - 1.3} \\ \end{array} } \right) \cdot 10^{ - 40} cm^2 $$ .

Abstract

We present data on inclusive negative-hadron production from charged-current antineutrino interactions in a 21% Ne-H mixture. Inclusive single-particle distributions are presented and are shown to be insensitive to the momentum transferred to the hadron vertex. Comparisons made to inclusive data from ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}n$ interactions indicate a close similarity between the hadrons resulting from $\ensuremath{\pi}$-nucleon and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-nucleus interactions. The general features of the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-nucleus data are found to be similar to those seen in $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}p$ interactions. This last observation implies that $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}p$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}n$ interactions are similar and that nuclear effects are small.

Abstract

We investigate properties of the hadron jets produced in deep inelastic antineutrino-nucleon charged current interactions in the Fermilab 15 foot bubble chamber. Our detailed analysis of the jet net charge provides evidence for the quark origin of the hadron jets. The factorization hypothesis for the inclusive one-particle cross section is found to be valid.

Abstract

We have studied transverse momenta of charged hadrons in the current fragmentation region of charged current antineutrino- nucleon interactions observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. The measured momentum squared transverse to the v μ + plane (p out 2 ) of the negative hadrons varies as a function of Q2, W2 and x as expected from t he leading order perturbative QCD calculations. Positively charged hadrons show a different transverse momentum behaviour as a function of Q2.

Abstract

The results of a study of strange particle production in charged current νμN interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy NeH2 mixture are presented. Production rates and average multiplicities of K0's and Λ's as functions of W2 and Q2 are given. The experimental data agree well with the quark-parton model predictions if a yield of 0.06 ± 0.02 of K0's and Λ's from charm production is included. Upper limits for D-meson production are given and the shape of the charmed quark fragmentation function is discussed. Inclusive production of the K∗(890) and Σ(1385) resonances is measured and it is shown that only about 5% of the K0 mesons and Λ hyperons results from resonance decays. Relative production rates of neutral strange particles on proton and neutron targets are studied.

Abstract

A search for ..mu..e events produced in an antineutrino hydrogen-neon experiment using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber is reported. Based on a single candidate, the 90%-confidence upper limit for the relative yield of ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ events is 0.5% of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV.

Backward protons from neutrino and antineutrino interactions in a Ne-${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ mixture are studied. Abstract

The results of a study of gamma production in antineutrino-nucleon interactions observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture are presented. From a sample of 706 gamma-rays we obtained the dependence of the average number of produced π0,s on negative multiplicity, momentum transfer and hadronic invariant mass. We find that the mean transverse momentum of the gamma-rays is independent of the above variables but has an asymmetric distribution with respect to the Feynman variablex. The invariant gamma cross-section distributions, the distribution functionD for π0,s and the energy spectrum of π0,s reconstructed from the gamma spectrum are also reported.

Abstract

We present results on the experimental study of inelastic charged-current antineutrino-nucleon scattering in the energy range of 10–200 GeV. The data sample, consisting of about 6500 antineutrino-induced events, was obtained in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mixture. The differential cross sections for ¯νμN interactions are presented in terms of scaling variables x and y. The structure functions F2ν and xF3¯ν have been evaluated as functions of x and E¯ν. A deviation from the scaling hypothesis, similar to those found in other experiments on inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, has been observed. The data are interpreted in the framework of the quark-parton model. Quark and antiquark distributions and their energy dependences are presented.

Abstract

A search for charmed particle production in anti neutrino-nucleon neutral current interactions is reported. The recognition signature used was positron decay of the charmed particle; however all single positron events found can be attributed to known sources. Based upon a possible singal of one event, the 90% confidence level upper limit for the rate of neutral current charmed particle production with subsequent positron decay relative to charged current interactions above the charm threshold is 1.45×10 −3 . Assuming a branching ratio of 0.1, we find the corresponding limit for the right handed u c coupling is 1.9×10 −2 .

Abstract

The first observation of μ + e + events produced in antineutrino interactions using the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber is reported. The relative yield of μ + e + events is (4.8 −3.2 +5.3 ) × 10 −4 of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV. The observed V 0 rate is 1.0 −1.0 +1.2 per μ + e + event. Possible sources of these events are discussed.

Abstract

In this paper we discuss inclusive spectra of K0's and Λ's produced in charged in charged-current ν μ N interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a 64% Ne-H2 mixture. Data presented in terms of the invariant cross section show, when compared with results from experiments with other incident beams, that the behavior of these distributions is approximately the same. The K0 and Λ fragmentation functions are presented and the shape of the K0 fragmentation function is found to be consistent with the parametrization of Field and Feynman. The average K0 and Λ transverse momentum squared as a function of Q2, W2, x and z is presented. Comparisons for the K0's produced in the current fragmentation region are in qualitative agreement with QCD predictions. The value of the Λ polarization is measured and a positive normal polarization PN = 0.34±0.18 is found.

Abstract

An event representing the production and decay of the charmed F+ meson has been identified by means of a 3-constraint fit to decay hypothesis F+ → π+π+π−π0, in which both γ-rays from the π0 converted. The event was produced by a charged current νμ interaction in an emulsion stack located inside the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber. The F+ traveled 50 μm, corresponding to a proper time of 1.4 × 10−13 seconds, before decaying in flight. Its mass was determined to be 2017 ± 25MeV.

Abstract

We present results on inclusive particle production in the antineutrino charged current induced hadron jets observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. Fractional energy distributions, particle ratios and average multiplicities of the hadrons in the jets are measured. Ratios between the inclusive production rates of different mesons in the jets are studied to seek evidence for the d-quark origin of the observed hadrons. Good over-all agreement with the hypothesis of d-quark fragmentation with universal fragmentation functions obeying isospin systematics is established.

Abstract

The total v μ N charged current cross section in the energy interval 10–50 GeV is unfolded from 15' bubble chamber antineutrino data. The method is to isolate the quasielastic events and determine their relative contribution to the overall charged current sample. The scale parameter is found to be (0.29 ± 0.03) × 10−38 cm2 GeV−1. Relevance of the method for neutrino oscillation studies is discussed.

Abstract

We have searched for candidates for the weak neutral leptonic current reaction ν μ + e − → ν μ + e − in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mix. Based on zero observed events of this type we find the 90% confidence level upper limit for the rate for this reaction relative to the total antineutrino charged current rate to be 3.9 × 10 −4 and, in the Weinberg-Salam model, sin 2 θ W ⩽ 0.37.

Abstract

We have used the ratio between the production rates of K 0 's and π − 's in antineutrino-nucleon interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber to measure the size of the SU (3) symmetry violation in the production of quark-antiquark pairs to be 0.27±0.04. This value is significantly larger than the value obtained from a recent ep experiment. There is no apparent dependence of the K 0 π − ratio with W 2 , Q 2 , x b or p T 2 .

Abstract

We investigate the net change in the current fragmentation region in antineutrino-nucleon charged current interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. Support is presented for the d-quark origin of the forward hadrons in the hadron center-of-mass system. An extrapolation of the net charge to infinite center-of-mass energy is performed giving as a result 〈Q〈 v =− (0.44 ± 0.09) . Combining this result with the result obtained using our v events in the same experiment we obtain the value 0.98 ± 0.15 for the charge difference between the fragmenting quarks in v and v charged current events.

From a sample of charged-current antineutrino events in a Ne-H mixture we have obtained a subsample of events having a backward proton in the laboratory. The systematics of these backward-proton events are found to be in agreement with previous results from backward-proton events obtained using hadron and ..gamma.. beams.

The two-stage decay D ∗− → D 0 π − , D 0 → K + π − X of the D ∗− mesons produced by antineutrinos in the 15 ft bubble chamber is studied. For an antineutrino energy above 10 GeV the rate of D ∗− production relative to all charged current events is found to be 0.042 ± 0.013.

A search is performed for the antineutrino oscillation process ν μ → ν τ with 15' bubble chamber data. Assuming maximal mixing, we obtain for the neutrino mass difference parameter Δ 16 eV2 the transition probability is found to be less than 0.022 (90% c.1.).

Abstract

Cryogenically sensitive nuclear emulsion was placed inside the 15-foot bubble chamber of FNAL and exposed to a wide-band energy (up to 200 GeV) neutrino beam. 194 charged-current neutrino interactions and 13 decays of charmed particles were registered. Using the nuclear emulsion as a vertex detector with the good spectrometric properties of the 15-foot bubble chamber has allowed the decays of charmed particles to be effectively analysed. Attentions is focussed on the new physical results. Λ + baryon andD + meson decay channels, production of charmed ∑ c baryons and Λ + via ∑ c . For the first time an event interpreted as production of the excited (c $$\overline s$$ )-state with mass ∼2790 MeV/c2 has been registered.
