Abstract

MICADO is a first light instrument for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), set to start operating later this decade. It will provide diffraction limited imaging, astrometry, high contrast imaging, and long slit spectroscopy at near-infrared wavelengths. During the initial phase operations, adaptive optics (AO) correction will be provided by its own natural guide star wavefront sensor. In its final configuration, that AO system will be retained and complemented by the laser guide star multi-conjugate adaptive optics module MORFEO (formerly known as MAORY). Among many other things, MICADO will study exoplanets, distant galaxies and stars, and investigate black holes, such as Sagittarius A* at the centre of the Milky Way. After their final design phase, most components of MICADO have moved on to the manufacturing and assembly phase. Here we summarize the final design of the instrument and provide an overview about its current manufacturing status and the timeline. Some lessons learned from the final design review process will be presented in order to help future instrumentation projects to cope with the challenges arising from the substantial differences between projects for 8-10m class telescopes (e.g. ESO-VLT) and the next generation Extremely Large Telescopes (e.g. ESO-ELT). Finally, the expected performance will be discussed in the context of the current landscape of astronomical observatories and instruments. Abstract

In the past, high-z AGNs were given a minor role as possible drivers of reionization, despite initial evidences in favor of their large space densities at low luminosities by Chandra and HST. Recent observations from JWST are finding relatively large numbers of faint AGNs at z>4, convincingly confirming these early results. We present a sample of z~5 AGNs (both from wide, shallow ground-based surveys and from deep, pencil-beam observations from JWST), allowing to estimate their space densities with unprecedented accuracy. The bright end (M1450<-26) of the z~5 AGN luminosity function is well constrained, with a rather steep slope. The faint end (M1450>-22) indicates a high space density, the scatter is significant and the knee (M1450~-24) is mostly undetermined. Comparisons with state-of-the-art models find reasonable agreement with the observed AGN luminosity function at z=5, while the predicted space density evolution at higher redshifts appears to be too fast with respect to observational constraints. Given the large variance at the faint end, we consider different options in fitting the luminosity functions and deriving the ionizing emissivity. Even in the most conservative scenario, the photo-ionization rate produced by z~5 AGNs is consistent with the UV background measurements. A slow evolution of the space density of faint AGNs is observed, indicating that active SMBHs are probably producing large amounts of ionizing photons at z>6, well into the epoch of reionization. Travel Recommender Systems TRSs have been proposed to ease the burden of choice in the travel domain by providing valuable suggestions based on user preferences Despite the broad similarities in functionalities and data provided by TRSs these systems are significantly influenced by the diverse and heterogeneous contexts in which they operate This plays a crucial role in determining the accuracy and appropriateness of the travel recommendations they deliver For instance in contexts like smart cities and natural parks diverse runtime informationsuch as traffic conditions and trail status respectivelyshould be utilized to ensure the delivery of pertinent recommendations aligned with user preferences within the specific context However there is a trend to build TRSs from scratch for different contexts rather than supporting developers with configuration approaches that promote reuse minimize errors and accelerate timetomarket To illustrate this gap in this paper we conduct a systematic mapping study to examine the extent to which existing TRSs are configurable for different contexts The conducted analysis reveals the lack of configuration support assisting TRSs providers in developing TRSs closely tied to their operational context Our findings shed light on uncovered challenges in the domain thus fostering future research focused on providing new methodologies enabling providers to handle TRSs configurations, Comment: Accepted at the 50th Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA) 2024

Abstract

The highest scientific return, for adaptive optics (AO) observations, is achieved with a reliable reconstruction of the PSF. This is especially true for MICADO@ELT. In this presentation, we will focus on extending the MICADO PSF reconstruction (PSF-R) method to the off-axis case. Specifically, a novel approach based on temporal-based tomography of AO telemetry data has been recently implemented. Results from the PSF-R of both simulated and real data show that, at half isoplanatic angle distances, a precision of about 10-15% is achievable in both Strehl ratio and full-width at half maximum, paving the way to extend the MICADO PSF-R tool also to the multi-conjugated AO case., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The FlyEye design makes its debut in the ESA's NEOSTEL developed by OHB-Italia. This pioneering FlyEye telescope integrates a monolithic 1-meter class primary mirror feeding 16 CCD cameras for discovering Near-Earth Object (NEO) and any class of transient phenomena. OHB-Italia is the prime contractor, receiving extended support from the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) in the ESA's NEOSTED program's integration and testing. The FlyEye distinctive design splits the Field of View into 16 channels, creating a unique multi-telescope system with a panoramic 44 square degree Field of View and a seeing-size pixel-scale, enabling NEOs detection down to apparent magnitudes 21.5 insisting on a 1m diameter spherical mirror. The scientific products of a similar FlyEye telescope can complement facilities such as Vera Rubin (former LSST) and ZTF. The FlyEye has the ability to survey two-thirds of the visible sky about three times per night can revolutionize time-domain astronomy, enabling comprehensive studies of transient phenomena, placing FlyEye in a new era of exploration of the dynamic universe. Abstract

We report results from numerical simulations assessing astrometry measurements with the Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics Relay for ELT Observations (MORFEO) instrument on the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Using the Advanced Exposure Time Calculator (AETC), we evaluate MORFEO astrometric accuracy in moderately crowded fields. Our simulations account for spatially variable Point Spread Function (PSF), geometric distortion, and rotation-dependent variations. We computed focal plane coordinates using observed stellar distribution and computed population synthesis with the SPISEA tool, generating stellar magnitude distributions for MICADO filters at selected metallicities and stellar ages. Our analysis shows that MORFEO can achieve high-precision astrometry in the galaxy neighborhood (within $\mu < 24$ mag) by minimizing PSF enlargement and optimizing calibration strategies. Abstract

MICADO is the first-light camera of the ESO ELT, allowing NIR imaging and long-slit spectroscopy assisted by adaptive optics. MICADO is now entering its construction phase, and the software for data reduction is reaching an adequate maturity level. The PSF Reconstruction (PSF-R) of MICADO is a software tool for the blind derivation of the PSF, only using adaptive optics telemetry data. An update of the status of the PSF-R service is provided here. The PSF-R prototype has been tested on ERIS@VLT data in order to check the reconstruction of on- and off-axis PSFs. The on-axis PSF-R is accurate at a few percent level on Strehl, FWHM, Encircled Energy, and half light radius, while for the off-axis case the match is within 10-15 percent at a distance of half isoplanatic angle. The first version of the workflow for the PSF-R pipeline has been developed and verified using the latest release of the ESO data processing system. A set of simulations has been implemented on the morphological analysis of distant galaxies, showing that the accuracy of the PSF-R matches the goals needed to study their morphology. Abstract

Observations close to the diffraction limit, with high Strehl ratios from Adaptive Optics (AO)-assisted instruments mounted on ground-based telescopes are a reality and will become even more widespread with the next generation instruments that equip 30 meter-class telescopes. This results in a growing interest in tools and methods to accurately reconstruct the observed Point Spread Function (PSF) of AO systems. We will discuss the performance of the PSF reconstruction (PSF-R) software developed in the context of the MICADO instrument of the Extremely Large Telescope. In particular, we have recently implemented a novel algorithm for reconstructing off-axis PSFs. In every case, the PSF is reconstructed from AO telemetry, without making use of science exposures. We will present the results coming from end-to-end simulations and real AO observations, covering a wide range of observing conditions. Specifically, the spatial variation of the PSF has been studied with different AO-reference star magnitudes. The reconstructed PSFs are observed to match the reference ones with a relative error in Strehl ratio and full-width at half maximum below 10% over a field of view of the order of one arcmin, making the proposed PSF-R method an appealing tool to assist observation analysis, and interpretation., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; Adaptive Optics for Extremely Large Telescopes 7th Edition, 25-30 Jun 2023 Avignon (France)

Abstract

Water treatment systems using ultrafiltration (UF) membranes constitute a viable option for producing drinking water for human consumption. The present study aimed to perform a comparative analysis of conventional water treatment and UF. The treatment methods were compared considering the quality of the treated water and the cost of implementing a water treatment plant (WTP) and operating the systems, with a risk assessment of the influence of the deterioration of water quality on costs. Data were obtained from the operations of a conventional WTP in the municipality of Lages, Brazil, and a pilot plant employing UF. In the conventional and UF systems, treated water had turbidity of 1.90 and 0.19 NTU, an apparent color of 2.12 and 0.28 mg L−1 Pt/Co, and pH of 6.94 and 7.04, respectively. Average total cost (ATC) was $0.0496/m3 in the conventional system and $0.0596/m3 in the UF system. Chemical inputs and sludge treatment were the main variables that affected the ATC in conventional treatment, whereas energy and plant costs were the main components affecting the ATC in the UF system. A 30% reduction in water quality increased the ATC by 2.6% for the conventional and 1.5% for the UF system. HIGHLIGHTS The quality of water treated by the conventional system and ultrafiltration was compared.; The cost of implementing the two treatment systems was determined.; Average total cost was compared between the two systems.; The deterioration of water quality was included in the risk assessment.;

Abstract

We developed game-changing concepts for meter(s) class very-wide-field telescopes, spanning three orders of magnitude of the covered field of view. Multiple cameras and monocentric systems: from the Smart Fast Cameras (with a quasi-monocentric aperture), through the FlyEye, toward a MezzoCielo concept (both with a truly monocentric aperture). MezzoCielo (or "half of the sky") is the last developed concept for a new class of telescopes. Such a concept is based on a fully spherical optical surface filled with a low refractive index, and high transparency liquid surrounded by multiple identical cameras. Abstract

In the past years, we have undertaken an extensive investigation of LMC and SMC star clusters based on HST data. We present photometry and astrometry of stars in 101 fields observed with the WFC/ACS, UVIS/WFC3 and NIR/WFC3 cameras. These fields comprise 113 star clusters. We provide differential-reddening maps and illustrate various scientific outcomes that arise from the early inspection of the photometric catalogs. In particular, we provide new insights on the extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon: i) We detected eMSTOs in two clusters, KMHK361 and NGC265, which had no previous evidence of multiple populations. This finding corroborates the conclusion that the eMSTO is a widespread phenomenon among clusters younger than ~2 Gyr. ii) The homogeneous color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 19 LMC clusters reveal that the distribution of stars along the eMSTO depends on cluster age. iii) We discovered a new feature along the eMSTO of NGC1783, which consists of a distinct group of stars going on the red side of the eMSTO in CMDs composed of ultraviolet filters. Furthermore, we derived the proper motions of stars in the fields of view of clusters with multi-epoch images. Proper motions allowed us to separate the bulk of bright field stars from cluster members and investigate the internal kinematics of stellar populations in various LMC and SMC fields. As an example, we analyze the field around NGC346 to disentangle the motions of its stellar populations, including NGC364 and BS90, young and pre-MS stars in the star-forming region associated with NGC346, and young and old field stellar populations of the SMC. Based on these results and the fields around five additional clusters, we find that young SMC stars exhibit elongated proper-motion distributions that point toward the LMC, thus bringing new evidence for a kinematic connection between the LMC and SMC., Comment: 37 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

IntroductionCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines aroused concerns about the risk of flares and adverse events in inflammatory arthritis (IA) since the vaccine clinical trials did not specifically investigate this subset of patients.MethodsA systematic literature review and meta-analysis to summarize the data on joint disease flare and adverse events following immunization (AEFI). Two researchers independently evaluated the literature on Pubmed, Scopus, and EMBASE databases from 22nd March 2020 to 30th September 2023. A random-effects model was used to pool odds ratios (OR) (with 95% CI) for the risk of joint disease flares and adverse events. Subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate the risk of disease flare between different IA and adverse events. Heterogeneity was assessed by I2 statistic.ResultsA total of 9874 IA patients were included in the study: 6579 (66.6%) patients affected by RA and 3295 (33.4%) spondyloarthritis (SpA). The overall rate of flares was higher in RA vs. SpA (9.1% vs. 5.3%). However, the pooled estimated analysis showed no increased risk of joint disease flare following COVID-19 vaccination in patients affected by RA vs. SpA [OR 0.88, 95% CI: 0.77-1.00]. Furthermore, a subgroup analysis showed an increased risk of joint flares in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients vs. RA [OR 0.79, 95% CI: 0.68-0.93, p=0.004]. The pooled estimated analysis revealed no increased risk of AEFI in patients with RA vs. SpA [1.02, 95% CI: 0.63-1.65].ConclusionsOur meta-analysis summarized the current evidence on joint disease flares and COVID-19 vaccine-associated AEFI in IA patients. Pooled analysis showed an increased risk of disease flares in PsA vs. RA patients.

Abstract

Despite major advances in prophylaxis, no repeated dosing regimen with currently employed extended-half-life or non-factor products replaces the advantages of a long-term cure in persons with severe congenital hemophilia A and B (HA, HB). They indeed live with the risk of breakthrough bleedings, and treatment is still invasive, both physically and psychologically. Early studies showed that adeno-associated virus-based in vivo gene therapy (AAV-based in vivo GT), could convert hemophilia persons from a severe to mild a phenotype for years. However, the proportion of the hemophilia population likely to benefit from this transformative strategy was uncertain. Current evidence is expanding the eligibility criteria, and helps to predict risks, complications and unexpected side effects of this advanced treatment. Thus, among future options, AAV-based in vivo GT is likely to become the treatment of choice in HA and HB, if real-life data confirm its negligible short-term adverse events. However, while the global use of AAV-based in vivo GT is endorsed as a key objective of future studies in hemophilia, the liberating capability of a potentially one-off treatment on individuals with chronic diseases for whom lifelong cure has been inaccessible so far remains to be thoroughly recognized by government bodies. This is critical for reimbursement agencies to absorb the cost of the cure and calls for a partnership between health care systems and the pharmaceutical industry. However, bridging the gap between the costs of the advanced treatments approved for commercialization and their readiness to persons with HA and HB is still a challenging task.

Abstract

The Colour and Stereo Surface Science Imaging System (CaSSIS) of the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter returns on average twenty images per day of the Martian surface, most of them in 3 or 4 colours and some of them in stereo. CaSSIS uses a push-frame approach to acquire colour images, with four bandpass filters deposited directly above the sensor and an imaging cadence synchronized with the ground track velocity to cover the imaged area with tens of small, partially overlapping images. These "framelets" are later map-projected and mosaicked to build the final image. This approach offers both advantages and challenges in terms of radiometric calibration. While the collection of dark and flatfield frames is considerably enhanced by the frequent and fast acquisition of tens of successive images, mosaics assembled from the adjacent framelets highlight the straylight and changes in the bias of the detector. Both issues have been identified on CaSSIS images, with low intensities overall (up to a few percents), but sufficient to generate prominent artefacts on the final assembled colour images. We have therefore developed methods to correct these artefacts that are now included into the radiometric calibration pipeline. We detail here the different steps of the calibration procedure and the generation of the products used for calibration, and discuss the efficacy of the corrections. The relative uncertainties on the bias and flatfield frames are low, of the order of 0.2 and 0.1 percents, respectively. The uncertainty on the absolute radiometric calibration is of 3 percents, which is quite low for such an instrument. The straylight adds an estimated about 1 percent error to the absolute calibration. The residuals after corrections of the straylight and bias offsets are of the order of a few DNs to tens of DNs.

Abstract

The astronomical applications greatly benefit from the knowledge of the instrument PSF. We describe the PSF Reconstruction algorithm developed for the LBT LUCI instrument assisted by the SOUL SCAO module. The reconstruction procedure considers only synchronous wavefront sensor telemetry data and a few asynchronous calibrations. We do not compute the Optical Transfer Function and corresponding filters. We compute instead a temporal series of wavefront maps and for each of these the corresponding instantaneous PSF. We tested the algorithm both in laboratory arrangement and in the nighttime for different SOUL configurations, adapting it to the guide star magnitudes and seeing conditions. Abstract

Current state-of-the-art adaptive optics (AO) provides ground-based, diffraction-limited observations with high Strehl ratios (SR). However, a detailed knowledge of the point spread function (PSF) is required to fully exploit the scientific potential of these data. This is even more crucial for the next generation AO instruments that will equip 30-meter class telescopes, as the characterization of the PSF will be mandatory to fulfill the planned scientific requirements. For this reason, there is a growing interest in developing tools that accurately reconstruct the observed PSF of AO systems, the so-called PSF reconstruction. In this context, a PSF-R service is a planned deliverable for the MICADO@ELT instrument and our group is in charge of its development. In the case of MICADO, a blind PSF-R approach is being pursued to have the widest applicability to science cases. This means that the PSF is reconstructed without extracting information from the science data, relying only on telemetry and calibrations. While our PSF-R algorithm is currently being developed, its implementation is mature enough to test performances with actual observations. In this presentation we will discuss the reliability of our reconstructed PSFs and the uncertainties introduced in the measurements of scientific quantities for bright, on-axis observations taken with the SOUL+LUCI instrument of the LBT. This is the first application of our algorithm to real data. It demonstrates its readiness level and paves the way to further testing. Our PSF-R algorithm is able to reconstruct the SR and full-width at half maximum of the observed PSFs with errors smaller than 2% and 4.5%, respectively. We carried out the scientific evaluation of the obtained reconstructed PSFs thanks to a dedicated set of simulated observations of an ideal science case., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

MICADO is a workhorse instrument for the ESO ELT, allowing first light capability for diffraction limited imaging and long-slit spectroscopy at near-infrared wavelengths. The PSF Reconstruction (PSF-R) Team of MICADO is currently implementing, for the first time within all ESO telescopes, a software service devoted to the blind reconstruction of the PSF. This tool will work independently of the science data, using adaptive optics telemetry data, both for Single Conjugate (SCAO) and Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) allowed by the MORFEO module. The PSF-R service will support the state-of-the-art post-processing scientific analysis of the MICADO imaging and spectroscopic data. Abstract

This paper presents the status of an ongoing project aimed at developing a PSF reconstruction software for adaptive optics (AO) observations. In particular, we test for the first time the implementation of pyramid wave-front sensor data on our algorithms. As a first step in assessing its reliability, we applied the software to bright, on-axis, point-like sources using two independent sets of observations, acquired with the single-conjugated AO upgrade for the Large Binocular Telescope. Using only telemetry data, we reconstructed the PSF by carefully calibrating the instrument response. The accuracy of the results has been first evaluated using the classical metric: specifically, the reconstructed PSFs differ from the observed ones by less than 2% in Strehl ratio and 4.5% in full-width at half maximum. Moreover, the recovered encircled energy associated with the PSF core is accurate at 4% level in the worst case. The accuracy of the reconstructed PSFs has then been evaluated by considering an idealized scientific test-case consisting in the measurements of the morphological parameters of a compact galaxy. In the future, our project will include the analysis of anisoplanatism, low SNR regimes, and the application to multi-conjugated AO observations., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures. 32. Cholesterol nanoarchaeosomes for alendronate targeted delivery as an anti-endothelial dysfunction agent

Abstract

Sodium alendronate (ALN) is a very hydrosoluble and poorly permeable molecule used as an antiresorptive agent and with vascular anticalcifying capacity. Loaded into targeted nanovesicles, its anti-inflammatory activity may be amplified towards extra-osseous and noncalcified target cells, such as severely irritated vascular endothelium. Here cytotoxicity, mitochondrial membrane potential, ATP content, and membrane fluidity of human endothelial venous cells (HUVECs) were determined after endocytosis of ALN-loaded nanoarchaeosomes (nanoARC-Chol(ALN), made of polar lipids from Halorubrum tebenquichense: cholesterol 7:3 w/w, 166 ± 5 nm, 0.16 ± 0.02 PDI, −40.8 ± 5.4 mV potential, 84.7 ± 21 µg/mg ALN/total lipids, TL). The effect of nanoARC-Chol(ALN) was further assessed on severely inflamed HUVECs. To that aim, HUVECs were grown on a porous barrier on top of a basal compartment seeded either with macrophages or human foam cells. One lighter and one more pronounced inflammatory context was modelled by adding lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to the apical or the apical and basal compartments. The endocytosis of nanoARC-Chol(ALN), was observed to partly reduce the endothelial-mesenchymal transition of HUVECs. Besides, while 10 mg/mL dexamethasone, 7.6 mM free ALN and ALN-loaded liposomes failed, 50 μg/mL TL + 2.5 μg/mL ALN (i.e., nanoARC-Chol(ALN)) reduced the IL-6 and IL-8 levels by, respectively, 75% and 65% in the mild and by, respectively, 60% and 40% in the pronounced inflammation model. This is the first report showing that the endocytosis of nanoARC-Chol(ALN) by HUVECs magnifies the anti-inflammatory activity of ALN even under conditions of intense irritation, not only surpassing that of free ALN but also that of dexamethasone.

Abstract

ABSTRACTWe present the first highly detailed morphological analysis of three craters located in Mercury's north pole, characterized by permanently shadowed regions (PSRs). This study, which began with an initial sample of 14 craters, highlighted three morphological classes, based on the craters’ features: Complete complex morphology, Flat-floor morphology, and Immature complex morphology, presented here as maps of three representative craters, one for each class. As demonstrated by decades of studies, areas of PSRs within these craters could host water ice deposits, making them among the most interesting targets for future studies by the ESA/JAXA’s BepiColombo mission. Our mapping work aims to give a cartographic context to subsequent chronological, thermal, and compositional analyses, as well as to provide a support to the acquisition strategy of the BepiColombo mission upon its arrival on Mercury in late 2025. The mapping highlights landforms which might be related to volcanic, gravitational, and maybe periglacial events.

34. Foot pain and disability in patients with ankylosing spondylitis is associated to disease activity

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The feet may be involved in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), causing pain and walking difficulties. This research aimed to study the involvement of the foot in a sample of Brazilian patients with AS. METHODS: The Brazilian version of the Foot Function Index (FFI-BR) was applied to 103 individuals (57 AS patients and 46 controls). Clinical profiles were obtained in AS patients as well as the measurement of disease activity by the ASDAS (Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score)-ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), ASDAS-CRP (C reactive protein) and BASDAI (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index) and function by BASFI (Bath Ankylosing spondylitis functional score). RESULTS: Only 19.2% of AS patients did not have any foot complaints and the FFI-BR score presented worse results than the control group (p = 0.02). The "pain" domain of FFI-BR scored highest in AS patients, followed by "disability". There was no association between the results of the FFI-BR and the clinical profile of patients with AS, but there was an association between the score and the disease activity indexes (r = 0.50, p = 0.003 with ASDAS-ESR; r = 0.44, p = 0.005 with ASDAS-CRP; and r = 0.60, p < 0.0001 with BASDAI). The BASFI also showed a positive correlation (r = 0.72; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Pain and disability are common in AS patients and these symptoms are associated with disease activity.

Abstract

IntroductionPrader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by hypothalamic-pituitary deficiencies including hypogonadism. In girls with PWS, hypogonadism can present early in childhood, leading to genital hypoplasia, delayed puberty, incomplete pubertal development, and infertility. In contrast, girls can present with premature activation of the adrenal axis leading to early pubarche and advanced bone age. We aim to evaluate the progression of puberty and adrenarche signals in girls with PWS.MethodologyA longitudinal retrospective cohort study included girls with PWS followed at a Pediatric Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic in a Tertiary University Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 2002 to 2022. Data collected via chart review included clinical information on birth history, breast and pubic hair Tanner stages, presence of genital hypoplasia, age at menarche, regularity of menstrual cycles, body mass index (BMI) z-score, final height, age of initiation of estrogen replacement and growth hormone replacement, as well as results for PWS genetic subtype; biochemical investigation (LH, FSH, estradiol, DHEA-S); radiographic bone age and pelvic ultrasound.ResultsA total of 69 girls were included in the study and the mean age of puberty onset was 10.2 years in those who started puberty after the age of 8 years. Breast Tanner stage IV was reached by 29.1% girls at a mean age of 14.9 years. Spontaneous menarche was present in 13.8% and only one patient had regular menstrual cycles. Early adrenarche was seen in 40.4% of cases.ConclusionOur study demonstrated in a large sample that girls with PWS often present with delayed onset of puberty despite frequent premature adrenarche. Based on our results, we suggest an estrogen replacement protocol for girls with PWS to be started at the chronological age or bone age of 12–13 years, taking into consideration the uterus size. Further prospective studies are needed.

Abstract

Abstract Background In the context of Greece, many instruments measuring constructs pertinent to child and adolescent mental health lacked a locally-validated, freely-available version. As part of a nationwide survey, we translated and cross-culturally adapted a collection of seventeen brief, largely-employed assessment tools that can be used at scale. Methods This study is part of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Initiative in Greece (CAMHI), a capacity-building program focusing on enhancing mental health care for children and adolescents living in Greece. We conducted a nationwide survey assessing mental health symptoms, parenting practices, service availability and quality, mental health literacy and stigma, and professional practices within the country. As part of this process, we selected outcomes and instruments after consulting the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) and the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN). From our selection, we identified 17 instruments that did not have a Greek-validated version available for use. These instruments were translated and cross-culturally adapted following a structured procedure, including independent back-and-forth translations, synthesis of versions, expert revision, and pilot testing. Some instruments were slightly modified to meet CAMHI survey purposes. Results A cross-culturally adapted version in Greek was made available for the following instruments: Pediatric Symptoms Checklist (PSC); Deliberate Self Harm Inventory (DSH) (modified); Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen-2 (CATS-2); ABCD Screen Use (modified); Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV (SNAP-IV); Parent Behavior Inventory (PBI); Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS)—(modified); Australian Mental Health Vignettes; Reported and Intended Behavior Scale (RIBS); Barriers to Access to Care (BACE) (modified); Experience of Service Questionnaire (ESQ) (modified); and Multitheoretical List of Therapeutic Interventions (MULTI-30) (modified). Conclusion A collection of these widely-used assessment tools is now adapted for the local context and freely accessible at [ https://osf.io/crz6h/ ]. Researchers and health professionals in Greece can utilize this resource to screen, evaluate, and monitor various constructs related to mental health in accordance with the most effective practices.

A partir de 1960 vários países do continente africano proclamaram as suas “independências” política e administrativa do jugo colonial, fruto de conquistas efetivadas por um lado, por meio de negociação pacífica e por outro lado, pela luta armada. E foi por meio desta última que os moçambicanos alcançaram a independência nacional, à 25 de Junho de 1975. Pensadores e teóricos pós-coloniais movidos pela constatação da prevalência das colonialidades de poder vêm questionado as independências. É nesse viés que tecemos esse artigo, com objetivo de suscitar algumas reflexões que promovam e potencializam debates sobre a imposição cultural enraizado no sistema colonial, sustentado pelos discursos preconceituosos eurocentrados que buscavam incutir e enfatizar o mito de complexo de inferioridade atribuído aos homens negros; tanto como impor a homogeneização cultural eurocêntrica. Esses debates são embasados teórica e metodologicamente por viés pós-coloniais e decoloniais. Por meio de revisão bibliográfica, dialogamos com Fanon (2020) Cesáire (2020), Azagaia (2013), Ki-Zerbo (2010) Lopes (2010) e; vários autores para discutir as colonialidades que perpassam o tecido social dos moçambicanos. Portanto, das reflexões constata-se que as colonialidades podem ser desestabilizadas por meio de ações efetivas de desaprendizagem e reaprendizagem: desaprender as amaras ideológicas eurocêntricas “romper a dominação mental”, denunciar e insurgir-se contra a subalterinização, alienação cultural e desmascarar os paradigmas, estereótipos, preconceitos eurocêntricos e aprender a reconquistar e revalorizar as identidades socioculturais nativas, aprender a pensar e falar sobre o continente africano com os africanos.

Abstract

Current fertilizer recommendations often neglect nutrient cycling across crop rotations. This study aimed to assess the decay rate and nutrient (N, P, K) release patterns of sorghum, black oat, and corn residues (omitido) in an integrated crop–livestock system. The experiment used factorial treatments based on two sward heights (high and low) and two nitrogen fertilization levels (N-pasture at 200 kg N ha−1 and N-corn at 0 kg N ha−1). Litter bags were collected at various intervals from each crop to measure nutrient release patterns and decomposition rates. The results showed that pasture height and nitrogen fertilization significantly influenced decomposition and nutrient release, affecting the subsequent grain crop phase. Potassium was released rapidly and in high amounts. Nitrogen fertilization during the pasture phase prevented nitrogen and phosphorus immobilization in black oat residue and reduced immobilization in corn residue. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for nutrient cycling and decomposition rates in fertilization strategies to enhance the sustainability of integrated crop–livestock systems.

45. Threat and Deprivation Are Associated with Distinct Aspects of Cognition, Emotional Processing, and Psychopathology in Children and Adolescents

Abstract

Exposure to childhood adversity has been consistently associated with poor developmental outcomes, but it is unclear whether these associations vary across different forms of adversity. We examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between threat and deprivation with cognition, emotional processing, and psychopathology in a middle-income country. The sample consisted of 2511 children and adolescents (6-17 years old) from the Brazilian High-Risk Cohort for Mental Conditions. Parent reports on childhood adversity were used to construct adversity latent constructs. Psychopathology was measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to generate a measure of general psychopathology (the "p" factor). Executive function (EF) and attention orienting toward angry faces were assessed using cognitive tasks. All measures were acquired at two time-points 3 years apart and associations were tested using general linear models. Higher levels of psychopathology were predicted by higher levels of threat cross-sectionally and longitudinally, and by deprivation longitudinally. For EF, worse performance was associated only with deprivation at baseline and follow-up. Finally, threat was associated with attention orienting towards angry faces cross-sectionally, but neither form of adversity was associated with changes over time in attention bias. Our results suggest that threat and deprivation have differential associations with cognitive development and psychopathology. Exposure to adversity during childhood is a complex phenomenon with meaningful influences on child development. Because adversity can take many forms, dimensional models might help to disentangle the specific developmental correlates of different types of early experience.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and predict selection of genetic gains and genetic diversity of 12 Andropogon lateralis ecotypes collected in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. To estimate genetic parameters and predict selection gains, the REML/BLUP technique was applied. Genetic diversity among the ecotypes was evaluated by two clustering methods (optimization and hierarchical) and principal component (PC) analysis, the latter method also used to discard variables. The genetic parameters studied showed high potential for selection of important agronomic forage traits for livestock production. Results showed that the 12 A. lateralis Nees ecotypes exhibited high genetic variability for the studied forage characters and indicated parental prosperity for crosses within the genetic breeding program. Principal component analysis showed that number of total vegetative tillers, leaf:stem ratio, number of reproductive tillers, and leaf dry matter yield accounted for 80.6% of the observed variation in PC1. These variables are important characteristics for quantifying the dry matter production and nutritional value of forage plants, and they can help to discriminate amongst ecotypes. Ecotypes sourced from the Pelotas, Piratini, Passo Fundo, Bagé, and Montenegro regions showed superior forage production when evaluated by the BLUP methodology. Therefore, this group was identified as the most suitable for selection and crossing purposes. Tocher’s cluster analysis grouped the ecotypes into five divergent groups. Principal component and UPGMA hierarchical methods were also efficient at separating the ecotypes.

Abstract

Cardiac amyloidosis is a group of diseases characterized by the deposition of amyloid fibers in cardiac tissue. Two forms are mainly reported: light chain (AL) and transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis. Among the complications of transthyretin amyloidosis there are thrombotic events and, to a lesser extent, hemorrhagic events. The latter are likely caused by perivascular amyloid deposition resulting in capillary fragility, in addition to INR lability during anticoagulant therapy. The onset of thrombotic events may be caused by the high prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF), mechanical cardiac dysfunction and atrial myopathy observed in patients with transthyretin amyloidosis. It remains unclear why thromboembolic events occur even in patients with sinus rhythm or adequate anticoagulation, though a hypercoagulable state or underlying inflammation may be involved. We report a case of cryptogenic ischemic stroke in an 86-year-old woman with transthyretin amyloidosis and sinus rhythm. Traditional coagulation tests, whole blood rotational thromboelastometry and impedance aggregometry did not show a hypercoagulable state. The thrombin generation assay did not reveal a prothrombotic state. However, the study of extracellular vesicles highlighted underlying immune-mediated endothelial damage likely responsible for the thrombotic diathesis. It could be hypothesized that inflammation plays a role in the hypercoagulability of patients with transthyretin amyloidosis. Larger prospective studies are needed to validate our hypothesis.

Abstract

Beans are an important constituent of the Brazilian diet, and the search for cultivars with good culinary characteristics and adapted to the place of cultivation is necessary. It is known that there is a wide genetic diversity for common bean landrace cultivars. Still, little is known experimentally about the behavior of these cultivars when produced under organic cultivation. This work aimed to evaluate the technological quality of common bean landraces produced under organic cropping system. Twenty-six cultivars were used, four commercial and twenty-two landraces, originating from the Active Bean Germplasm Bank (BAF) of Santa Catarina State University – Agroveterinary Sciences Center (UDESC/CAV), produced in organic and conventional cultivation, in two crops. Cooking time and resistance, percentage of water absorption and broken grains and total soluble solids were evaluated. The shortest cooking time for the grains cultivated in the organic system (18 to 22 minutes) was obtained. The cultivars that had a percentage of unbroken grains between 60 and 80% showed a higher content of total soluble solids in the broth. Based on the genetic diversity for technological quality in organic cropping system, the use of cultivars, BAFs: 60, 23, 81, 13, 68, 55, 75 and 36 are indicated to integrate genetic improvement programs or to be used by small farmers for bean production.
