In this study the morphology, the conventional glycohistochemistry and the ultrastructure of adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) stomach is reported. For this purpose, stomach belonging to 10 adult female rainbow trout, weighting ~ 500 ± 20 gr and 32 ± 2.50 cm long, were collected and processed. Oncorhynchus mykiss has a siphonal stomach, with a J letter shape, showing a descending portion (cardiac region), an ascendant one (pyloric region), connected through the most represented middle portion (fundic region). Morphologically gastric wall shows an overlay of four typical vertebrate tunicae: mucosa, sub-mucosa, muscularis and serosa. Tunica mucosa, lacking of muscularis mucosae, is raised into longitudinal folds. The tunica propria submucosa is of considerable thickness and receives the bodies of many gastric glands whose lumen is lined with oxyntopeptic cells. Nervous cells, organized in ganglion, that can be compared to Mammals plexus submucosus, are noted. Glycohistochemistry was performed by staining with Periodic acid–Schiff (PAS), Alcian blue (AB) pH 2.5, AB pH 1 and AB-PAS. Histochemical analysis revealed a consistent presence of glycoconjugates produced by epithelial lining and gastric pit cells. Ultrastructural studies, performed at scanning electron microscopy, showed a mucosa that rises in folds with a geometrically well-defined shape and an abundance of gastric pits in the fundic region. Taken together our results integrate the anatomical description of rainbow trout stomach and will be helpful for future studies related to digestive physiology, development of appropriate feeding strategies and gastric disease control of this teleostean species.

The numerical increase of roe deer has resulted in a noticeable growth of hunting activities allowing to have a great availability of biometrical data from both the hunted samples and the population by describing trends and variations and, then, optimize the consequent wildlife management decisions. Specifically, we analyzed biometric data of a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) population at the Macerata Province, in central Italy. We focused on two animal groups: fawns (2 years old). We assessed the relationship between body parameters and trophic resources available during the autumn-winter period. In particular, we analyzed live weight, head–trunk length, height at shoulders, chest circumference, length of hock, total length of the cranium, condilo-basal length, mastoid width, zygomatic width, ectorbital width, entorbital width, teeth row length and mandible length. In the context of studying trophic resources, we identified three environmental categories based on their carrying capacity and then assigned a specific environmental category to each sample. Statistical analysis was performed. In fawn, only zygomatic width showed significant differences both between sexes and among the environmental categories. In adult, the analysis showed significant differences between sexes for live weight, head–trunk length, length of hock and zygomatic width, with the highest values for males. Among environmental categories, the analysis showed significant differences for live weight, head–trunk length, length of hock chest circumference, length of hock, ectorbital width and teeth row length. This approach, applied to a broader database could be useful to identify suitable parameters to be used in planning the optimum selective hunting of roe deer.

A comienzos de mayo de 1928, los estibadores portuarios de la ciudad de Rosario se declararon en huelga demandando un aumento salarial. El conflicto fue muy importante porque, en un ambiente de relativa “paz social” a nivel nacional, desencadenó una ola de huelgas que se extendieron a lo largo de todo el año, no sólo en Rosario, sino también en muchos lugares de la provincia de Santa Fe. Este trabajo se centra en el análisis de esta huelga desde la prensa escrita, tomando como ejes dos tipos de periódicos: La Capital y La Nación, por un lado, y América y Reflejos, por otro. Si bien todos ellos trataron el tema intensamente, lo hicieron desde enfoques diferentes, por lo que se contrastaron las visiones de uno y otro tipo de periódicos, encuadrando a La Capital y La Nación como “prensa seria” y a América y Reflejos como “prensa nueva” o “prensa moderna”. También se aborda, aunque subsidiariamente, algunos aspectos sobre el grado de violencia y la represión que se alcanzó en dicha huelga.

Reseña de Libros: ALONSO, Luciano; “Qué digan dónde están” Una historia de los derechos humanos en Argentina, Prometeo Libros, Buenos Aires, 2022, 364 pp.

In this study, we have investigated the immunolocalization of NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) and BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) in the pancreas of two species of marine mammals: Tursiops truncatus (common bottlenose dolphin), belonging to the order of the Artiodactyla, and Otaria flavescens (South American sea lion), belonging to the order of the Carnivora. Our results demonstrated a significant presence of NGF and BDNF in the pancreas of both species with a wide distribution pattern observed in the exocrine and endocrine components. We identified some differences that can be attributed to the different feeding habits of the two species, which possess a different morphological organization of the digestive system. Altogether, these preliminary observations open new perspectives on the function of neurotrophins and the adaptive mechanisms of marine mammals in the aquatic environment, suggesting potential parallels between the physiology of marine and terrestrial mammals.

International studies have confirmed the central role played by families in defining migration routes and strategies. Adopting a family perspective to view the migration phenomenon means observing the different relationships between the various components along a multi-generational temporal and relational axis. Migration experiences from one generation to another are very different, and they often underline or exacerbate generational differences. A generational approach could therefore be the leitmotiv of innovative debates in the field of contemporary migration studies. Furthermore, introducing generation as a key variable may help to understand migration processes through a broader perspective in this time of multiple crises and transformations. This contribution, which is of a theoretical nature, aims to reflect on state-of-the-art research in the field. Reviewing the most recent literature, it aims to add to the available knowledge by observing how cultural complexity, intergenerational relationships and renegotiation practices within migrant families could be regarded as empirical evidence of ongoing social change.

Nowadays, the lack of quantitative criteria to resolve the diagnostic heterogeneity of psychotic onsets limits the development of safer and more effective treatments. Therefore, the hypothesis to integrate multimodal data to uncover biological subtypes of psychosis has risen [1,2]. Here we explored the existence of subgroups of patients affected by first episode psychosis (FEP) with a possible immunopathogenic basis.To do this, we designed a computational model that use unsupervised machine learning to cluster a sample of 127 FEP patients and 117 healthy controls (HC), based on the peripheral blood concentrations of 12 immune gene transcripts which demonstrated to classify with high accuracy between FEP patients and healthy subjects in a previous study [3]. To validate the model, we applied a resampling strategy based on the half-splitting of the total sample. Further, we tested the correlation between the subgroups and clinical, neuropsychological and brain structural variables.In both the discovery and validation samples, the model identified a FEP cluster characterized by the high expression of inflammatory and immune-activating genes (IL1b, CCR7 and IL12a) and of a single immune counterregulatory gene (CCR3)[4] and a further cluster consisting of equal number of FEP and HC subjects, which did not show a relative over or under expression of any immune marker (balanced subgroup). Also, none of the subgroups were related to specific symptoms dimensions or longitudinal diagnosis. FEP patients included in the balanced immune subgroup showed a reduced left hippocampal volume and a left supramarginal and lateroccipital cortexes’ thinning. These correlations seem to support an opposite pattern in the correspondent brain area of the inflammatory subgroup [5].Our results demonstrated the existence of a FEP patients’ subgroup that present a prominent activation of the inflammatory response. This evidence may pave the way to sample stratification in future trials aiming to develop personalized diagnostic tools and therapies targeting specific immunopathogenic pathways of psychosis onsets.

Background: Vestibular symptoms on sitting-up are frequent on patients seen by vestibular specialists. Recently, a benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) variant which elicits vestibular symptoms with oculomotor evidence of posterior semicircular canal (P-SCC) cupula stimulation on sitting-up was described and named sitting-up vertigo BPPV. A periampullar restricted P-SCC canalolithiasis was proposed as a causal mechanism. Objective: To describe new mechanisms of action for the sitting-up vertigo BPPV variant. Methods: Eighteen patients with sitting-up vertigo BPPV were examined with a pre-established set of positional maneuvers and follow-up until they resolved their symptoms and clinical findings. Results: All patients showed up-beating torsional nystagmus (UBTN) and vestibular symptoms on coming up from either Dix-Hallpike (DHM) or straight head-hanging maneuver. Sixteen out of 18 patients presented a sustained UBTN with an ipsitorsional component to the tested side on half-Hallpike maneuver (HH). A slower persistent contratorsional down-beating nystagmus was found in eleven out 18 patients tested on nose down position (ND). Conclusions: Persistent direction changing positional nystagmus on HH and ND positions indicative of P-SCC heavy cupula was found in 11 patients. A sustained UBTN on HH with the absence of findings on ND, which is suggestive of the presence of P-SCC short arm canalolithiasis, was found on 5 patients. All patients were treated with canalith repositioning maneuvers without success, but they resolved their findings by means of Brandt-Daroff exercises. We propose P-SCC heavy cupula and P-SCC short arm canalolithiasis as two new putative mechanisms for the sitting-up vertigo BPPV variant.

We found significantly higher levels of hs-CRP in 27 subjects who had recently attempted suicide compared to 27 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Moreover, the levels of hs-CRP in suicide attempters were not related to background or psychopathological characteristics, nor to the methods of suicide attempt. Our matched case-control study confirms previous observations of high levels of the inflammation marker hs-CRP in patients who have attempted suicide, irrespective of their underlying type and levels of psychopathology.

La vulnerabilità costituisce un fenomeno complesso, dal momento che presenta dimensioni di tipo sociale e materiale che investono contemporaneamente molteplici sfere della vita quotidiana delle persone sul piano individuale, su quello familiare e in rapporto alle appartenenze di gruppo. A ciò vanno aggiunti gli aspetti che riguardano il perseguimento del benessere, il senso di identità e l’appartenenza sociale (Ranci, 2002a). Di conseguenza, i territori che presentano un elevato potenziale di vulnerabilità richiedono di essere destinatari di un'attenzione particolare rispetto allo studio e alla programmazione di interventi pubblici rivolti al contrasto delle situazioni di rischio (ISTAT, 2020b). Tra i diversi gruppi sociali, gli immigrati si distinguono dalle consuete fasce della popolazione autoctona esposte a condizioni di fragilità materiale e sociale per il fatto di essere ancora più vulnerabili per alcune loro caratteristiche intrinseche (Reyneri, 2007). Obiettivo del presente contributo è l’approfondimento del fenomeno della vulnerabilità in riferimento a un particolare contesto di studio, l’Hotel House di Porto Recanati. I dati raccolti nel quadro di due Progetti FAMI (2019-2021) all’interno di questo sistema condominiale, a forte presenza di residenti di origine straniera, sono analizzati considerando alcune importanti dimensioni della vulnerabilità individuate dall’IVMS (ISTAT, 2020b): questione abitativa, strutture familiari e reddito. Per quanto la mancanza/scarsità di reddito rappresenti, senza dubbio, un importante indicatore di vulnerabilità, esso non è certamente l’unico riferimento da tenere in considerazione. Infatti, le tendenze rilevate e discusse confermano come sia importante monitorare ulteriori variabili, con l’obiettivo di tenere sotto controllo potenziali situazioni di vulnerabilità o, meglio ancora, di strutturare misure di politiche pubbliche per fronteggiare in modo integrato le situazioni di rischio. Le evidenze mostrano, in modo particolare, come in una popolazione di origine straniera, tendenzialmente stanziale, la qualità dell’abitare, le strutture familiari, il reddito inteso come inserimento stabile nel mercato del lavoro e l’istruzione siano non solo indicatori indispensabili per comprendere potenziali fattori di esclusione sociale, ma costituiscano anche dimensioni strettamente interconnesse e interdipendenti.

Every year, mountain pastures show a progressive impoverishment of forage. The loss in grassland feed value restricts the production period of local Pecorino cheeses, which strongly depend on the vegetative cycle of the pasture linked to climatic conditions. The Monte Fietone mountain area (Macerata, Italy) has emblematic pasture flora during spring and early summer. This unique environment is normally used for rearing sheep, allowing regular production of local Pecorino cheeses from their milk, which is rich in vitamins and intrinsic floral aromas. Biologists and agronomists are giving increasing importance to these mountain food products. We conducted sensorial tests and experimental auctions to investigate recognition of the quality of this rare artisanal product. The results indicate considerable potential for economic differentiation. Accordingly, we recommend useful and applicable marketing and policy actions to support the sustainability of mountain grazing systems.

According to statistics and future predictions, meat consumption will increase in the coming years. Considering both the environmental impact of intensive livestock farming and the importance of protecting animal welfare, the necessity of finding alternative strategies to satisfy the growing meat demand is compelling. Biotechnologies are responding to this demand by developing new strategies for producing meat in vitro. The manufacturing of cultured meat has faced criticism concerning, above all, the practical issues of culturing together different cell types typical of meat that are partly responsible for meat’s organoleptic characteristics. Indeed, the existence of a cross talk between adipose and muscle cells has critical effects on the outcome of the co-culture, leading to a general inhibition of myogenesis in favor of adipogenic differentiation. This review aims to clarify the main mechanisms and the key molecules involved in this cross talk and provide an overview of the most recent and successful meat culture 3D strategies for overcoming this challenge, focusing on the approaches based on farm-animal-derived cells.

The study analyzes red deer responses to disturbances during the day and different exposures to tourists, to establish the more appropriate times to carry out activities inside the Paneveggio deer enclosure. The alarm reactions of red deer were observed after presenting different types of visual stimuli inside and outside the fence, in order to answer some questions: Which stimuli produce the strongest reactions from the animals? Do animals differently react to stimuli presented outside and inside the fence? On which days and times are the animals more sensitive to disturbances? Are there different reactions between the males and females? The results suggest that the red deer adversely react to the disturbance at different degrees of intensity in relation to day, sex, tourist and where the stimuli are presented. It was observed that during the days with the highest tourist presence, the animals were particularly alarmed; discomfort accumulation produced the highest number of alarm reactions on Monday. For these reasons, it would be opportune to manage the pasture on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, scheduled at specific times of day, preferably far from the estimated presence of tourists.

Among the most-used fish species in aquaculture is the Nile tilapia, due to its rapid growth rate and its adaptation to a wide range of farming conditions. A careful description of the morphology of the digestive tract, particularly the esophagus and stomach, allows a better understanding of the relationship between structure and function. Combining scanning and light microscopy we highlighted the presence of five different zones in the stomach (1: esophagus-gastric lumen passage; 2: descending glandular portion; 3: fundic portion; 4: ascending glandular portion; 5: gastric-pyloric transition portion). Histochemical investigation showed a secretion of carboxylates mucopolysaccharides along the esophagus and sulphated complex carbohydrates in the stomach. These results suggest that mucins play a protective role of the epithelial lining, which is essential for a correct digestive process. Finally, the characterization of the main cellular structures may be inspiring for more advanced studies aiming to decipher the role of specific molecules, such as neuropeptides, involved in the physiological digestive process.

Language production has often been described as impaired in psychiatric diseases such as in psychosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of linguistic difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP), either affective or non-affective. To deepen our comprehension of linguistic profile in FEP, 133 patients with FEP (95 non-affective, FEP-NA; 38 affective, FEP-A) and 133 healthy controls (HC) were assessed with a narrative discourse task. Speech samples were systematically analyzed with a well-established multilevel procedure investigating both micro- (lexicon, morphology, syntax) and macro-linguistic (discourse coherence, pragmatics) levels of linguistic processing. Executive functioning and IQ were also evaluated. Both linguistic and neuropsychological measures were secondarily implemented with a machine learning approach in order to explore their predictive accuracy in classifying participants as FEP or HC. Compared to HC, FEP patients showed language production difficulty at both micro- and macro-linguistic levels. As for the former, FEP produced shorter and simpler sentences and fewer words per minute, along with a reduced number of lexical fillers, compared to HC. At the macro-linguistic level, FEP performance was impaired in local coherence, which was paired with a higher percentage of utterances with semantic errors. Linguistic measures were not correlated with any neuropsychological variables. No significant differences emerged between FEP-NA and FEP-A (p≥0.02, after Bonferroni correction). Machine learning analysis showed an accuracy of group prediction of 76.36% using language features only, with semantic variables being the most impactful. Such a percentage was enhanced when paired with clinical and neuropsychological variables. Results confirm the presence of language production deficits already at the first episode of the illness, being such impairment not related to other cognitive domains. The high accuracy obtained by the linguistic set of features in classifying groups support the use of machine learning methods in neuroscience investigations.

First identified as an anorexigenic peptide, in the last decades, several studies have suggested that Nesfatin-1 (Nesf-1) is a pleiotropic hormone implicated in numerous regulatory processes in peripheral organs and tissues. In vertebrates, Nesf-1 is indeed expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral organs. In this study, we characterized the pattern of Nesf-1 distribution within the digestive tract of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), composed of three gastric chambers and an intestine without a clear subdivision in the small and large intestine, also lacking a caecum. Our results indicated that Nesf-1 is widely distributed in cells of the mucosal epithelium of the gastric chambers. Most of the immunoreactivity was observed in the second chamber, compared to the first and third chambers. Immunopositivity was also found in nerve fibers and neurons, scattered or/and clustered in ganglion structures along all the examined gastrointestinal tracts. These observations add new data on the highly conserved role of Nesf-1 in the mammalian digestive system.

El 23 de enero de 1989, militantes de la agrupación MTP encabezados por Enrique Gorriarán Merlo –histórico dirigente del PRT-ERP–, intentaron copar los cuarteles del Regimiento de Infantería Mecanizada 3 “General Belgrano” en la localidad argentina de La Tablada, con el supuesto propósito de frustrar un golpe militar carapintada en contra del gobierno de Raúl Alfonsín, quien había enfrentado tres levantamientos militares a lo largo de su gestión. La represión fue desmedida y violenta y dejó varias personas heridas, muertas y desaparecidas. En este artículo me propongo analizar las lecturas del ataque a La Tablada y el derrotero de la justicia al respecto, poniendo énfasis en las violaciones a los derechos humanos producidas, el rol del Estado, las consecuencias en la modificación de las leyes represivas y el cambio en la correlación de fuerzas en la relación gobiernos/militares.

Among oregano properties, its antioxidant and antibacterial effects are particularly interesting. Oregano is also able to induce a higher glycoconjugate production in gut, creating a physical barrier against microorganisms. This study evaluated the effects of adding an aqueous extract of oregano (OAE) to the diet of two homogenous groups of pigs during the finisher phase. The diets were as follows: control commercial diet (CTR group) and CTR diet supplemented (2 g/kg) with OAE (O group). Samples of ileum and caecum from the two groups were examined by conventional histochemistry to analyze complex carbohydrates and by immunohistochemistry to detect Bcl-2 Associate X protein (BAX), an indicator of oxidative stress. Glyco-histochemistry showed significant differences between the two groups. Immunohistochemistry revealed a lower presence of BAX in O group. The OAE supplementation improved the production of glycoconjugates, able to enhance in pig the protection of intestinal mucosa by means of direct and indirect defense actions. The reduced BAX immunostaining observed in O group may be an indicator of enhanced antioxidant action promoted by oregano. The results of this study can be used in further research to identify ways to improve endogenous defence ability, with the aim of reducing antibiotic use and preventing antimicrobial resistance.

Tradicionalmente, los estudios referidos al Movimiento de Derechos Humanos en Argentina se centraron sobre un conjunto de organizaciones que resistieron a la última dictadura militar (1976-1983), desligadas de las luchas políticas del pasado. En general, un tema que ha sido escasamente abordado es la vinculación de los partidos políticos contemporáneos con la cuestión de los derechos humanos. En este artículo examino los vínculos que generó uno de estos partidos con el Movimiento de Derechos Humanos como espacio político de referencia: el Partido Comunista Revolucionario, en el espacio regional de la provincia de Santa Fe, poniendo especial atención en la ciudad de Rosario.

Como la escritura de cartas es una práctica social en sí misma, las cartas han traspasado la historia y el espacio. Las mujeres han escrito muchas de ellas y han sido sus protagonistas a lo largo de la historia. No obstante, los contextos pueden ser de lo más diversos y estos podrán variar no solo en función del tiempo y el espacio, sino también en función del entramado social en el que se encuentre la autora. En este artículo analizo la correspondencia de Nelma Jalil, Madre de Plaza de Mayo de Rosario, como primer medio de búsqueda de su hijo desaparecido. Nelma integró el grupo de Familiares de Detenidos y Desaparecidos por Razones Políticas y Gremiales de la ciudad de Rosario desde sus comienzos y posteriormente fundó la Delegación Rosario de Madres de Plaza de Mayo. Sin embargo, la correspondencia llevada a cabo con distintas entidades estatales, internacionales, eclesiásticas y otras fue la primera forma de búsqueda y reclamo. De manera complementaria, en este artículo esbozo el importante papel que tuvieron las cartas en la organización de los familiares de detenidosdesaparecidos que luego confluyeron en la constitución de diversas agrupaciones de derechos humanos.

Tradicionalmente los estudios referidos al movimiento de derechos humanos argentino se centraron sobre un conjunto de organizaciones que resistieron a la última dictadura militar (1976-1983), desvinculadas de las luchas políticas del pasado. En este artículo examino las estrategias que tomó el Partido Comunista argentino y sus organizaciones de masas –la Liga Argentina por los Derechos del Hombre y la Unión de Mujeres Argentinas– frente a la represión de la última dictadura militar (1976-1983) y los vínculos que generó con el movimiento de derechos humanos, como espacio político de referencia. En esta ocasión, se puso especial atención en el espacio regional de la provincia de Santa Fe, particularmente en Rosario.

Resistin is a polypeptide hormone of the adipokine-family, primarily, but not exclusively, produced by the adipose tissue. Recent studies suggested that resistin may affect the male and female reproductive activity. The study aim was to immunohistochemically evaluate the presence and distribution of resistin in the ovine uterus. Uterine samples were collected from two groups of ewes at the end of an experimental trial during which the animals of the first group (CTRL) were fed only by grazing while those of the second one (EXP) were supplemented with barley and corn. Using a monoclonal antibody against resistin, tested by Western Blot, the immunopositive reaction was identified in the cytoplasm of epithelial lining cells and uterine glands. The endogenous production of resistin seemed to be affected by different diet, as evidenced by staining differences between the CTRL and EXP groups. Our findings support the existence of a peripheral resistin system in the sheep uterus. It is possible that this system is involved in the functionality of the uterus, which is also affected by the animal’s nutritional status.

Background: The study of Suicidal ideation (SI) in people bereaved through suicide (Suicide Survivors, SSs) could be hampered by the person's willingness to admit it, or by their limited awareness of it. Our main hypothesis is that SI is common in these people, especially if they are parents or children of the victim. For its potential in shedding light on specific unconscious processes, Rorschach test was chosen for our investigation, for the first time in SSs literature. Rorschach suicide ideation and selected variables were further analyzed to better delineate their psychological profile.Method: Rorschach according to Exner's Comprehensive System was administered to 21 people bereaved through suicide presenting as outpatients at SOPROXI Project Service—Padova Mental Health Center- and 23 healthy controls. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was routinely administered to SSs and considered in the study.Results:T-tests showed significantly higher mean SI score (S-Con) as it emerged from the Rorschach test S-Con scores in SSs compared to control participants. SI found only weak correlation with the BDI item in which SSs can explicitly state the desire for their death. Within-group analysis revealed higher S-Con mean scores in bereaved children and parents of the victim compared to other kind of kinships. Morbid content (MOR) has been fund as the most characterizing variable in SSs' S-Con in terms of effect size, followed by a low number of responses with an ordinary form (X +%). Human movements (M), Special Scores related to thought slippage (ALOG, FABCOM2, INCOM2, and CONTAM) and poor human representations (PHR) have been shown to be more significantly present in SSs compared controls.Discussion: Psychodynamic interpretations of our results are provided. Clinical practice should consider Rorschach as one of eligible tools of investigation on this field.

Leptin (Lep) stimulates keratinocytes to proliferate, intervenes in the wound healing and participates to hair follicle morphogenesis and cycle. While it is secreted by skin structures including epidermis and hair follicles, intradermal adipose tissue also seems to have a role in Lep secretion and accordingly in the control of hair follicle growth in mice and humans. Lep was investigated in the skin of humans and laboratory animals but there are not data regarding bovine species. The aim of this work was to study the expression of Lep and its receptor (LepR) in the skin of bovine and, at the same time, to investigate the presence and extension of intradermal adipose tissue. A morphological evaluation of the skin was performed while the presence and localization of Lep and LepR were analyzed by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. A high and thick dermis without adipocytes was observed. Hair follicles and sebaceous and sweat glands were located in the proximal part of the skin while a thick layer of connective tissue, lacking adipose cells, separated these structures by subcutis. RT-PCR evidenced the transcripts for both molecules. By immunohistochemistry, Lep and LepR were observed in the epidermis and hair follicles. Based on the absence of intradermal adipose tissue and the presence of both Lep and LepR in the epidermis and in the hair follicle epithelium, it can be posited that in bovine skin Lep participates to the control of epidermis growth and hair follicle cycle through a paracrine and autocrine mechanisms.

The case study examined in this contribution is that of Italian communities in Belgium, where associations played a fundamental role for Italian citizens who emigrated after World War II but also for their descendants. Associationism represents a very interesting research field, if we choose to look at migrants as active subjects, who do not simply adapt to the social context of the territories they live in but rather tend to transform it. By analysing the content of biographical interviews carried out with children and descendants of Italians who emigrated to the country between 1946 and 1976, this paper investigates the role of Italian associationism precisely in relation to the processes of socialisation and cultural mediation in an intergenerational perspective. A study was performed on the mandibular gland obtained from growing pigs enrolled in a wide research project aiming to test the effects of different feed physical forms on animal health, production and welfare. We used 48 pigs fed for four weeks with different dietary treatments based on different grinding intensities and compactions of the same diet, namely coarsely ground meal (CM), finely ground pelleted (FP) and coarsely ground pelleted (CP) diets. Samples were analyzed by conventional histochemistry to identify the glycohistochemical profile and by immunohistochemistry to localize aquaporin 5, apelin and apelin receptor. Statistical elaborations were performed using the Stats R-package, version 3.5.3. Pig mandibular gland adenomere increased both the quantity and acidity of produced glycoconjugates from CM to FP and CP diets. This probably calls forth higher watery saliva, thus promoting a better feed softening facilitating the amalgamation of the bolus. Mandibular gland increased aquaporin 5 positivity in the CP diet, supporting the hypothesis of an augmented demand for water. Based on apelin/receptor localization, it was hypothesized that in pig mandibular gland the apelinergic system likely performs an endocrine control on the demilunes activity and a paracrine control on ducts, facilitating the production of a more fluid saliva.

Study of dimensions (biometry) and shapes (geometric morphometry) of bone structures in ungulates is of extreme importance in wildlife population management. Unlike classical biometry, which involves the use of a caliper for measurements, geometric morphometry acquires, through software, a series of reference points (landmarks) from digital photos, providing a series of linear measures. A method to convert values obtained from the GeoGebra software into biometric measures is described. We took photos of 25 mandibles of adult roe deer and at the same time measured mandible length and teeth row length using a caliper. After image processing using GeoGebra, we calculated the conversion factor as the mean ratio between measures taken using GeoGebra and the caliper. The series of measurements, taken with two different methods (direct measurement using the caliper and conversion from GeoGebra output), showed a good degree of agreement. We used the conversion factor to obtain, from the GeoGebra database, four additional parameters of 50 mandibles. The analysis of variance showed that one parameter was significantly different between sexes (p = 0.04), demonstrating the usefulness of the measurement conversion. The conversion factor is helpful to improve classical biometric databases to better clarify the relationship between environment and wildlife status.

This study evaluated the effects of adding oregano aqueous extract (OAE) to the diet of pig slaughtered at finisher stage. Study was performed to identify glycoconjugates and evaluate the oxidative stress levels in the duodenum and colon intestinal tracts. Glycohistochemistry was performed by staining with Periodic acid−Schiff (PAS), Alcian blue (AB) pH 2.5, AB-PAS, AB pH 1, AB pH 0.5, low iron diamine, and high iron diamine. Serial sections were pre-treated with sialidase V before staining with AB pH 2.5 (Sial-AB) preceded or not by saponification. To study oxidative stress, an immunohistochemical analysis was applied to investigate the presence of the oxidative stress target molecule Bcl-2 Associate X protein (BAX). Findings show that oregano aqueous extract supplementation improves the production of the secretion glycoconjugates involved in direct and indirect defense, thus enhancing the protection of the pig intestinal mucosa. Moreover, the reduced BAX protein immunostaining observed in both duodenum and colon of swine of the oregano-supplemented group respect to that observed in the control group suggests an enhanced antioxidant action by oregano adding. Findings could be useful for other studies aiming to reduce antibiotic use and prevent antimicrobial resistance.

Nesfatin-1 (Nesf-1) was identified as an anorexigenic and well conserved molecule in rodents and fish. While tissue distribution of NUCB2 (Nucleobindin 2)/Nesf-1 is discretely known in vertebrates, reports on ontogenetic expression are scarce. Here, we examine the age-related central and peripheral expression of NUCB2/Nesf-1 in the teleost African turquoise killifish Nothobranchius furzeri, a consolidated model organism for aging research. We focused our analysis on brain areas responsible for the regulation of food intake and the rostral intestinal bulb, which is analogous of the mammalian stomach. We hypothesize that in our model, the stomach equivalent structure is the main source of NUCB2 mRNA, displaying higher expression levels than those observed in the brain, mainly during aging. Remarkably, its expression significantly increased in the rostral intestinal bulb compared to the brain, which is likely due to the typical anorexia of aging. When analyzing the pattern of expression, we confirmed the distribution in diencephalic areas involved in food intake regulation at all age stages. Interestingly, in the rostral bulb, NUCB2 mRNA was localized in the lining epithelium of young and old animals, while Nesf-1 immunoreactive cells were distributed in the submucosae. Taken together, our results represent a useful basis for gaining deeper knowledge regarding the mechanisms that regulate food intake during vertebrate aging.

At present, data on the endocannabinoid system expression and distribution in the pancreatic gland appear scarce and controversial as descriptions are limited to humans and laboratory animals. Since the bovine pancreas is very similar to the human in endocrine portion development and control, studies on the fetal gland could prove to be very interesting, as an abnormal maternal condition during late pregnancy may be a predisposing trigger for adult metabolic disorders. The present investigation studied cannabinoid receptor type 2 presence and distribution in the bovine fetal pancreas towards the end of gestation. Histological analyses revealed numerous endocrinal cell clusters or islets which were distributed among exocrine adenomeri in connectival tissue. Immunohistochemistry showed that endocrine-islets contained some CB2-positive cells with a very peculiar localization that is a few primarily localized at the edges of islets and some of them also scattered in the center of the cluster. Characteristically, also the epithelium of the excretory ducts and the smooth muscle layers of the smaller arteries, in the interlobular glandular septa, tested positive for the CB2 endocannabinoid receptor. Conse - quently, the endocannabinoid system, via the cannabinoid receptor type 2, was hypothesized to play a major role in controlling pancreas function from normal fetal development to correct metabolic functioning in adulthood.

Sheep are the most bred species in the Central Italy Apennine using the natural pastures as a trophic resource and grazing activity is fundamental to maintain the grassland biodiversity: this goal can be reached only ensuring an economical sustainability to the farmers. This study aimed to investigate the apelin/apelin receptor system in ovine mammary gland and to evaluate the differences induced by food supplementation, in order to shed light on this system function. A flock of 15 Comisana x Appenninica adult dry ewes were free to graze from June until pasture maximum flowering (MxF). From this period to pasture maximum dryness (MxD), in addition to grazing, the experimental group (Exp) was supplemented with 600 g/day/head of cereals. Apelin and apelin receptor were assessed by Real-Time PCR and immunohistochemistry on the mammary glands of subjects pertaining to MxF, MxD and Exp groups. They were detected in alveolar and ductal epithelial cells. The pasture maximum flowering group showed significant differences in apelin expression compared with experimental and MxD groups. Apelin receptor expression significantly differed among the three groups. The reduced apelin receptor expression and immunoreactivity levels during parenchyma involution enables us to hypothesize that apelin receptor plays a modulating role in the system control.

This article describes the result of a study focusing on the keratinisation degree of rumen mucosa and changes in the body condition of sheep that had grazed for 20 days in a pasture densely covered with Brachypodium rupestre. Grazing in this type of pasture can reduce the probability of fires in a Mediterranean mountain setting. However, foraging in areas with a prevalence of Brachypodium rupestre can affect animals' welfare. In this respect, it is essential to determine the length of time during which the animals can remain in this environment before their welfare is compromised by this type of pasture. Ewes grazing on a semi-mesophilic pasture were included as a control. On days 1, 10, and 20, five ewes from each group were sacrificed to evaluate the variations of the epithelial keratinization degree of the rumen atrium and ventral sac. Body weight (BW) and body condition scores (BCS) were assessed in ten ewes per group. The control animals showed little variation in the keratinisation degree of rumen mucosa without any detrimental effects on the BCS and BW. The experimental animals showed a significant increase in the epithelial keratinisation degree within 10 days and a decrease of BCS and BW within 20 days. The data collected suggest that animals should not remain for longer than 10-12 days on pasture highly covered with Brachypodium rupestre.

In sub-Mediterranean climate the grassland aboveground phytomass production peaks in late spring and drops in summer, when the decrease of the pasture feed value may lead to the worsening of the animal welfare. Our goal was to define the summer rainfall values leading to a decrease of semi-extensive farming system sustainability in sub-Mediterranean regions. Summer rainfall variations reflect in the aboveground phytomass production and on the sheep body state. Differences of body condition score (BCS) among years were significant in late summer, which is the mating period for sheep. In the driest year the BCS of end August drops down to 2.1, largely below the value considered sufficient to ensure the animal breeding/milking performances (2.5). Reduction of summer rainfall greater than 15–20% compared to the normal average value (thus less than expected by the scenario of climate change) might be detrimental for semi-extensive rearing sustainability in sub-Mediterranean climate.

The presence and distribution of cells positive to orexin A (OXA) and to orexin type 2 receptor (OX2R) were investigated in the gastrointestinal tract of neonatal dogs by means of immunohistochemical techniques. The orexin A-positive cells were identified with some of the endocrine cells in the stomach and in the duodenum; they were both of the open and closed type and were lacking in the large intestine. In the stomach, a large subset of orexin A-positive cells also showed gastrin-like immunoreactivity while, in the duodenum, many of them seemed to store serotonin. The orexin type 2 receptor-positive cells were evidenced all along the gastrointestinal tract examined, also in the large intestine, and they showed the same morphological characteristics as those positive to orexin A. Moreover, the immunohistochemical techniques revealed intense positivity for both orexin A and orexin type 2 receptor in the neurons and fibers of the enteric nervous system. A large subset of orexin A-positive neurons seemed to store substance P.
