HESS J1632-478 is an extended and still unidentified TeV source in the galactic plane. In order to identify the source of the very high energy emission and to constrain its spectral energy distribution, we used a deep observation of the field obtained with XMM-Newton together with data from Molonglo, Spitzer and Fermi to detect counterparts at other wavelengths. The flux density emitted by HESS J1632-478 peaks at very high energies and is more than 20 times weaker at all other wavelengths probed. The source spectrum features two large prominent bumps with the synchrotron emission peaking in the ultraviolet and the external inverse Compton emission peaking in the TeV. HESS J1632-478 is an energetic pulsar wind nebula with an age of the order of 10^4 years. Its bolometric (mostly GeV-TeV) luminosity reaches 10% of the current pulsar spin down power. The synchrotron nebula has a size of 1 pc and contains an unresolved point-like X-ray source, probably the pulsar with its wind termination shock., Comment: A&A accepted, 9 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

OpenFoodTox ,Hazard assessment ,Toxicology ,Ecotoxicology ,Risk assessment ,In silico models ,Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Since its creation in 2002, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has produced risk assessments for over 5000 substances in >2000 Scientific Opinions, Statements and Conclusions through the work of its Scientific Panels, Units and Scientific Committee. OpenFoodTox is an open source toxicological database, available both for download and data visualisation which provides data for all substances evaluated by EFSA including substance characterisation, links to EFSA’s outputs, applicable legislations regulations, and a summary of hazard identification and hazard characterisation data for human health, animal health and ecological assessments. The database has been structured using OECD harmonised templates for reporting chemical test summaries (OHTs) to facilitate data sharing with stakeholders with an interest in chemical risk assessment, such as sister agencies, international scientific advisory bodies, and others. This manuscript provides a description of OpenFoodTox including data model, content and tools to download and search the database. Examples of applications of OpenFoodTox in chemical risk assessment are discussed including new quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) models, integration into tools (OECD QSAR Toolbox and AMBIT-2.0), assessment of environmental footprints and testing of threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) values for food related compounds. Finally, future developments for OpenFoodTox 2.0 include the integration of new properties, such as physico-chemical properties, exposure data, toxicokinetic information; and the future integration within in silico modelling platforms such as QSAR models and physiologically-based kinetic models. Such structured in vivo, in vitro and in silico hazard data provide different lines of evidence which can be assembled, weighed and integrated using harmonised Weight of Evidence approaches to support the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in chemical risk assessment and the reduction of animal testing.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
The EU Commission Ecolabel and the Product and Environmental Footprint (PEF) aim at promoting the development and consumption of greener products. The product aquatic toxicity score from these 2 methods may lead in some circumstances to opposite conclusions. Although this could be interpreted as an inconsistency, the score should not be compared to each other but used in a complementary way. In short, CDV provided a “full” product formula aquatic toxicity score, even if some chemicals may never reach or persist in freshwater ecosystems. The USEtox® score, by integrating fate and exposure, focuses on the potential toxicity of persistent-water-soluble chemicals at steady state. Since no risk or safety assessment can be conducted with USEtox® nor with the CDV, both are a hazard-based scoring system. This short communication clarifies the difference between approaches underpinning the toxicity scores used in Ecolabel and PEF, providing guidance on how to interpret the results.

A precision measurement by AMS of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 500 GeV based on 10.9 million positron and electron events is presented. This measurement extends the energy range of our previous observation and increases its precision. The new results show, for the first time, that above ∼200 GeV the positron fraction no longer exhibits an increase with energy.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is an astroparticle physics detector that has been installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in May 2011. The purpose of the experiment is to study with unprecedented precision and statistics cosmic-ray particles in an energy range from 0.5 GeV to few TeV. The AMS-02 Tracker system accurately determines the trajectory and absolute charge (Z) of cosmic rays by multiple measurements of the coordinates in nine layers of double-sided silicon micro-strip detectors. Given the high dynamic range of the front-end electronics, nuclei from hydrogen up to iron and above can be identified. The charge resolution could be naturally degraded by a number of detector effects that need to be carefully accounted for. In this contribution we describe the procedure that has been used to accurately calibrate the Tracker response. Finally we will discuss the Tracker calibration stability with time.

- Abstract
In [1], Dalzell proved that $\pi = \frac{{22}}{7} - \int_0^1 {\frac{{{t^4}{{(1 - t)}^4}}}{{1 + {t^2}}}}$ . He then used this equation to derive a new series converging to π. In [2], Backhouse studied the general case of integrals of the form $\int_0^1 {\frac{{{t^m}{{(1 - t)}^m}}}{{1 + {t^2}}}dt}$ and derived conditions on mand nso that they could be used to evaluate π. As a sequel, he derived accurate rational approximations of π. This work was extended in [3] where new rational approximations of π are obtained. Some related integrals of the forms $\int_0^1 {\frac{{{t^m}{{(1 - t)}^m}}}{{1 + {t^2}}}P(t)\,dt}$ and $\int_0^1 {\frac{{{t^m}{{(1 - t)}^m}}}{{\sqrt {1 - {t^2}} }}P(t)dt}$ with P(t) being of polynomial form are also investigated. In [4] the author gives more new approximations and new series for the case m= n= 4k. In [5] new series for π are obtained with the integral $\int_0^a {\frac{{{t^{12m}}{{(a - t)}^{12m}}}}{{1 + {t^2}}}dt}$ where $a = 2 - \sqrt 3$ . The general problem of improving the convergence speed of the arctan series by transformation of the argument has also been considered in [6, 7]. In the present work the author considers an alternative form for the denominators in integrals. As a result, new series are obtained for multiples of π by some algebraic numbers.

The AMS-02 Magnetic Spectrometer is a state-of-the art particle physics detector operating as an external module on the International Space Station. The purpose of the experiment is to study with unprecedented level of statistics the fluxes of cosmic rays in an energy range from 0.5 GeV to few TeV. The Silicon Tracker system accurately determines the trajectory and absolute electric charge of cosmic rays by multiple measurements of the coordinates and energy loss. It is composed of 2284 double-sided silicon micro-strip detectors arranged in nine layers. A charged particle traversing the silicon volume looses energy through ionization. This energy loss is proportional to the square of the particle charge thus allowing the distinction between different nuclei. The analog readout and the high dynamic range of the front end electronics allow to identify nuclear species from hydrogen up to iron and above. The charge resolution is naturally degraded by a number of detector effects that need to be correctly accounted for. In-flight calibration of the Tracker is done using the statistics accumulated during two years of operation in space, allowing to perform a precise equalization and linearization of the responses of the 3072 amplifier chips. This results in an excellent overall charge discrimination power. In this contribution we describe the Tracker system and the main challenges of its operation in space. We then present the procedure that has been used to accurately calibrate the Tracker's response and optimize its performances in terms of charge resolution.

The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios [superscript 2]H/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 3]He/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 6]Li/[superscript 7]Li, [superscript 7]Be/([superscript 9]Be+[superscript 10]Be), and [superscript 10]B/[superscript 11]B in the range 0.2-1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. The measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, AMS-01, during the STS-91 flight in 1998 June., United States. This article questions the notion of natural heritage from the perspective of one of its symbolic representations : the landscape. Since heritage and landscape are not ontological objects but rather cultural constructs, the study focuses on the semiotic and historic processes which preside over their invention and their interrelation, in order to identify the tensions and contradictions at work in the process of considering nature as heritage. Three inventions make up the prerequisites for this process : nature, a way of looking and landscape. The study presents, diachronically, the historic milestones of this process which originates, in the Western world, during the Renaissance period. From then on, the emergence of the paradigm of modernity slowly leads to an alliance, fully achieved during the 19th century, between intellectual curiosity, scientific systematization and aesthetic emotion. This alliance is key to the development of the contemporary taste for natural heritage, as it is reflected in Unesco’s agreement on the subject. However, the standpoint in favor of heritage, by overvaluing the aesthetics of the landscape, creates the illusion of preserving nature and can even hinder this very preservation. The study of landscape therefore reveals the paradox and the inner contradictions of the project to consider nature as heritage.

- Abstract
Calculating the binary Goldbach partitions for the first 128× 106 numbers represents weeks of computation with the fastest microprocessors. This paper describes an FPGA systolic implementation for reducing the execution time. High clock frequency is achieved using operators based on pseudo-random bit generator. Experiments carried both on the R10000 processor and on the FPGA PeRLe-1 board are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Goldbach conjecture states that every even integer ≥ 4 can be written as a sum of two prime numbers. It is known to be true up to 4 × 1011. In this paper, new experiments on a Cray C916 supercomputer and on an SGI compute server with 18 R10000 CPUs are described, which extend this bound to 1014. Two consequences are that (1) under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann hypothesis, every odd number ≥7 can be written as a sum of three prime numbers, and (2) under the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis, every even positive integer can be written as a sum of at most four prime numbers. In addition, we have verified the Goldbach conjecture for all the even numbers in the intervals [105i, 105i +108], for i=3, 4,..., 20 and [1010i, 1010i + 109], for i=20,21,..., 30. A heuristic model is given which predicts the average number of steps needed to verify the Goldbach conjecture on a given interval. Our experimental results are in good agreement with this prediction. This adds to the evidence of the truth of the Goldbach conjecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Nonaccidental releases of chemicals into the environment occur ubiquitously as a result of manufacturing activities and consumer use and disposal practices. The potential impact of such releases depends on the inherent chemical properties, the quantities that are discharged, and the manner in which these are partitioned in the receiving environment. The science of environmental risk assessment refers to a set of approaches and methodologies designed to guide the systematic evaluation of the potential risks associated with a specific environmental exposure. It is a relatively young scientific discipline that has grown with leaps and bounds in the past 2 decades. The environmental risk assessment of consumer products such as laundry detergents, disposed of down the drain, represented one of its earliest applications. Recognition of the importance of accurate assessment of the environmental fate and effects of consumer products helped encourage the development of test methods, tools, and approaches. Every responsible consumer product manufacturer today considers environmental risk assessment an integral component of product development.

The performances of four chronic toxicity tests, comprising the Daphnia magna21-day (d) (crustacean), Brachionus calyciflorus2-d (rotifer), Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata72-h (green algae), and the Microtox chronic 22-h (bacteria) tests, were compared. Sixteen chemicals with toxicity covering 6 orders of magnitude were studied. Very high correlations were found between the NOEC/EC10Pseudokirchneriella72-h, NOEC/EC10Brachionus2-d, and the NOEC Daphnia21-d tests. The toxicological response of rotifers and microalgae were within the same order of magnitude as the response of Daphniain 80% of cases (13/16 chemicals). The Microtox chronic test also anticipated the overall results of the Daphnia21-d test, but the prediction was rather imprecise, compared with microalgae and rotifers. The test measuring the algal growth inhibition of P. subcapitataafter 72h was the most sensitive bioassay. Toxicity on microalgae after 72h could be estimated after 5h by measuring either the direct fluorescence of either photosynthetic pigments or fluorescein diacetate in 56 and 43% of cases, respectively. The median value of the ratio between EC10and EC50was 3.75, 2, and 1.5 with the algae, the rotifers, and the bacteria, respectively.

39. Use of Partial Extractions to Study Mercury Partitioning on Natural Sediment Particles - A Cautionary Note

- Abstract
Inorganic and organic mercury forms (203HgCl2 and CH3203HgCl) were added to a natural sediment maintained in dilute suspension under oxic conditions, and partitioning was followed over time with the aid of phase separation techniques (centrifugation-filtration) and chemical extractions (1 N HCl; 0.1 N NaOH; 30% H202). Sorption of inorganic Hg onto the suspended sediment was essentially complete (>99% of the added HgCl2 was associated with the sediment particles) and very rapid (t1/2>> 1 d). The nature of the Hg-particle association, as probed by partial extractions with HCl or NaOH, showed no discernible time trend (t = 1, 3, 8, 16, 32 d). Partitioning of CH3203HgCl also favoured the particulate phase, but the relative amounts present in the dissolved phase (3-5%) and in the HCl extract were higher than with HgCl2. Results obtained with hydrogen peroxide, a reagent often used in the past to oxidize sedimentary organic matter and solubilize the Hg associated with this sink, proved unreliable. Under the extraction conditions the H2O2 acts not only as an oxidizing agent for the organic matter, but also as a reducing agent for the mercury. leading to volatilization and loss of the metal, presumably as Hg°.

In the last few years, the environmental footprint concept has obtained an increasing interest by both the scientific and political communities. The chemical footprint evaluation aims to assess at what extent actual emission of chemicals harms the ecosystems above their capability to recover (the so-called carrying capacity of the system). 41. Effect of Toxic Levels of Dietary Fluoride on Citrate Metabolism in the Rat

- Abstract
Citrate metabolism was studied in rats fed diets containing 450 or 600 ppm F. Ingestion on the high fluoride diet for 3 days caused an elevation of liver and blood citrate concentrations and a decrease in femur citrate content. After 2 weeks, liver and blood citrate concentrations returned to normal, and femur citrate remained depressed. The continuous intravenous infusion of 3 or 10 mg of citrate per day for 3 days did not cause an increase in either liver or blood citrate levels. The capacity of bone slices to incorporate 2-14C-acetate into citrate or total organic acids was not altered when the slices were prepared from rats fed the fluoride diet for 3 days. Oxidation of a tracer dose of 14C-citrate to 14CO2was not inhibited, nor were kidney citrate concentrations affected in rats fed the fluoride-containing diet for 3 days. Although the addition of 20 ppm F to an isolated, perfused rat liver caused changes in the concentrations of glycolytic intermediates, it did not alter citrate levels. The activities of rat liver aconitase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, citrate-cleavage enzyme, and citrate condensing enzyme were not directly affected by fluoride ingestion for 3 or 14 days. It was concluded that the elevation of liver and blood citrate observed in rats fed a fluoride-containing diet for 3 days was caused by a specific but as yet undetermined metabolic effect of fluoride. It cannot be exclusively the result of: 1) the fluoride-induced release of citrate from bone, 2) inhibited citrate oxidation, or 3) fluoride inhibition of liver citrate metabolizing enzymes.

We present a measurement of the cosmic ray (e^+ + e^-) flux in the range 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV based on the analysis of 10.6 million (e^+ + e^-) events collected by AMS. The statistics and the resolution of AMS provide a precision measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the flux can be described by a single power law with a spectral index γ = −3.170 +/- 0.008 (stat + syst) +/- 0.008 (energy scale)

International audience; Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux in the range 0.5 to 700 GeV and the positron flux in the range 0.5 to500 GeV are presented. The electron flux and the positron flux each require a description beyond a single power-law spectrum. Both the electron flux and the positron flux change their behavior at∼30GeV but the fluxes are significantly different in their magnitude and energy dependence. Between 20 and 200 GeV the positron spectral index is significantly harder than the electron spectral index. The determination of the differing behavior of the spectral indices versus energy is a new observation and provides important information on the origins of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons.

A precision measurement by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 350 GeV based on 6.8 x 10(6) positron and electron events is presented. The very accurate data show that the positron fraction is steadily increasing from 10 to similar to 250 GeV, but, from 20 to 250 GeV, the slope decreases by an order of magnitude. The positron fraction spectrum shows no fine structure, and the positron to electron ratio shows no observable anisotropy. Together, these features show the existence of new physical phenomena. - Abstract
Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the boron to carbon flux ratio (B/C) is important in understanding the propagation of cosmic rays. The precise measurement of the B/C ratio from 1.9 GV to 2.6 TV, based on 2.3 million boron and 8.3 million carbon nuclei collected by AMS during the first 5 years of operation, is presented. The detailed variation with rigidity of the B/C spectral index is reported for the first time. The B/C ratio does not show any significant structures in contrast to many cosmic ray models that require such structures at high rigidities. Remarkably, above 65 GV, the B/C ratio is well described by a single power law R^{Δ} with index Δ=-0.333±0.014(fit)±0.005(syst), in good agreement with the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence which predicts Δ=-1/3 asymptotically.
