5. Comparative Analysis of Two Different Techniques for Ridge Preservation Following Tooth Extraction: A Clinical and Radiographic Study

Abstract

Background: Ridge preservation following tooth extraction is essential for maintaining the alveolar bone structure and facilitating successful dental implant placement. Various techniques have been proposed for this purpose, but there remains a need for comparative analysis to determine their efficacy. Materials and Methods: This clinical and radiographic study compared two different techniques for ridge preservation: Technique A and Technique B. Fifty patients requiring tooth extraction were randomly assigned to either Technique A or Technique B group. Clinical parameters including pain, swelling, and soft tissue healing were evaluated postoperatively. Radiographic assessments were conducted to measure the dimensional changes in the alveolar ridge at baseline and after 3 months using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Results: In the Technique A group, postoperative pain scores averaged 2.3 (±0.5) on a visual analog scale (VAS), while in the Technique B group, the average pain score was 2.5 (±0.6). The swelling was minimal in both groups with no significant difference. Soft tissue healing was satisfactory in both groups. Radiographically, the mean vertical bone loss was 1.2 mm (±0.3) in the Technique A group and 0.9 mm (±0.4) in the Technique B group, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Both Technique A and Technique B demonstrated favorable outcomes in terms of postoperative discomfort and soft tissue healing. However, Technique B showed superior preservation of vertical ridge dimensions compared to Technique A. Therefore, Technique B may be considered more effective for ridge preservation following tooth extraction.

Abstract

This book addresses plasma modification of polyolefin surfaces. It comprises 21 chapters divided into three major sections. The first section covers the different techniques used for plasma modification of polyolefin surfaces and the effects of various gases as a surrounding medium, while the second provides a detailed analysis of the physics and chemistry of plasma modification and discusses various innovative characterization techniques, as well as ageing of the modified surface. It focuses on the analysis of changes in polymers'surface chemistry using various spectroscopic techniques, and of changes in their surface morphology after plasma treatment using optical microscopy, electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In addition, it provides detailed information on the characterization of modified polymer surfaces. The book's third and last section covers a range of applications of plasma-modified polyolefin surfaces varying from the packaging industry to the biomedical field, and shares valuable insights on the lifecycle analysis of plasma modification and modified surfaces.

Abstract

A new type of thermoplastic bio composite with coir fibre derived from coconut was fabricated by means of plasma modification of the polymer surface. Plasma modification is an effective and eco friendly method to create hydrophilic polymer surfaces. Plasma modified polyethylene (PE) was used as the matrix for coir fibre reinforced composites. The use of compatibilizers, and chemical modification of fibre or polymer is a usual practice to improve the interfacial adhesion and to make the fibre and polymer matrix compatible. Here, plasma modification of PE was introduced as a new method to improve the compatibility. The present study involves the preparation and characterisation of plasma modified PE (PPE) and coir fibre composites. Different preparation methods were followed and the composites prepared by a hot press method proved to be better. The mechanical properties of the composites were compared with unmodified PE/coir fibre composites. The newly prepared thermoplastic composites based on PPE and modified coir fibre showed lower water absorption due to better fiber/matrix interaction. We could observe different kinds of interfaces in the composites. In the plasma modified one, a good wetting of fibre by the matrix eliminated the possible microvoids. Finally, it is important to add that plasma modification of the polymer was found to be an effective technique to improve the compatibility between polyethylene and natural fibre.
