Scientific data sets continue to increase in both size and complexity. In the past, dedicated graphics systems at supercomputing centers were required to visualize large data sets, but as the price of commodity graphics hardware has dropped and its capability has increased, it is now possible, in principle, to view large complex data sets on a single workstation. To do this in practice, an investigator will need software that is written to take advantage of the relevant graphics hardware. The Viewpoints visualization package described herein is an example of such software. Viewpoints is an interactive tool for exploratory visual analysis of large, high-dimensional (multivariate) data. It leverages the capabilities of modern graphics boards (GPUs) to run on a single workstation or laptop. Viewpoints is minimalist: it attempts to do a small set of useful things very well (or at least very quickly) in comparison with similar packages today. Its basic feature set includes linked scatter plots with brushing, dynamic histograms, normalization and outlier detection/removal. Viewpoints was originally designed for astrophysicists, but it has since been used in a variety of fields that range from astronomy, quantum chemistry, fluid dynamics, machine learning, bioinformatics, and finance to information technology server log mining. Expanding upon the work of Way and Srivastava 2006 we demonstrate how the use of training sets of comparable size continue to make Gaussian process regression (GPR) a competitive approach to that of neural networks and other least-squares fitting methods. This is possible via new large size matrix inversion techniques developed for Gaussian processes (GPs) that do not require that the kernel matrix be sparse. This development, combined with a neural-network kernel function appears to give superior results for this problem. Our best fit results for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Main Galaxy Sample using u,g,r,i,z filters gives an rms error of 0.0201 while our results for the same filters in the luminous red galaxy sample yield 0.0220. We also demonstrate that there appears to be a minimum number of training-set galaxies needed to obtain the optimal fit when using our GPR rank-reduction methods. We find that morphological information included with many photometric surveys appears, for the most part, to make the photometric redshift evaluation slightly worse rather than better. This would indicate that most morphological information simply adds noise from the GP point of view in the data used herein. In addition, we show that cross-match catalog results involving combinations of the Two Micron All Sky Survey, SDSS, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer have to be evaluated in the context of the resulting cross-match magnitude and redshift distribution. While interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are understood to be the heliospheric counterparts of CMEs, with signatures undeniably linked to the CME process, the variability of these signatures and questions about mapping to observed CME features raise issues that remain on the cutting edge of ICME research. These issues are discussed in the context of traditional understanding, and recent results using innovative analysis techniques are reviewed.

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) propagate into the outer heliosphere, where they can have a significant effect on the structure, evolution, and morphology of the solar wind, particularly during times of high solar activity. They are known to play an important role in cosmic ray modulation and the acceleration of energetic particles. ICMEs are also believed to be associated with the large global transient events that swept through the heliosphere during the declining phases of solar cycles 21 and 22. But until recently, little was known about the actual behavior of ICMEs at large heliographic latitudes and large distances from the Sun. Over the past decade, the Ulysses spacecraft has provided in situ observations of ICMEs at moderate heliographic distances over a broad range of heliographic latitudes. More recently, observations of alpha particle enhancements, proton temperature depressions, and magnetic clouds at the Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft have begun to provide comparable information regarding the behavior of ICMEs at extremely large heliocentric distances. At the same time, advances in modeling have provided new insights into the dynamics and evolution of ICMEs and their effects on cosmic rays and energetic particles.

Reflectance spectroscopy is a standard tool for studying the mineral composition of rock and soil samples and for remote sensing of terrestrial and extraterrestrial surfaces. We describe research on automated methods of mineral identification from reflectance spectra and give evidence that a simple algorithm, adapted from a well-known search procedure for Bayes nets, identifies the most frequently occurring classes of carbonates with reliability equal to or greater than that of human experts. We compare the reliability of the procedure to the reliability of several other automated methods adapted to the same purpose. Evidence is given that the procedure can be applied to some other mineral classes as well. Since the procedure is fast with low memory requirements, it is suitable for on-board scientific analysis by orbiters or surface rovers.

Upcoming Mars Surveyor lander missions will include extensive spectroscopic capabilities designed to improve interpretations of the mineralogy and geology of landing sites on Mars. The 1999 Marsokhod Field Experiment (MFE) was a Mars rover simulation designed in part to investigate the utility of visible/near-infrared and thermal infrared field spectrometers to contribute to the remote geological exploration of a Mars analog field site in the California Mojave Desert. The experiment simultaneously investigated the abilities of an off-site science team to effectively analyze and acquire useful imaging and spectroscopic data and to communicate efficiently with rover engineers and an on-site field team to provide meaningful input to rover operations and traverse planning. Experiences gained during the MFE regarding effective communication between different mission operation teams will be useful to upcoming Mars mission teams. Field spectra acquired during the MFE mission exhibited features interpreted at the time as indicative of carbonates (both dolomitic and calcitic), mafic rocks and associated weathering products, and silicic rocks with desert varnish-like coatings. The visible/near-infrared spectra also suggested the presence of organic compounds, including chlorophyll in one rock. Postmission laboratory petrologic and spectral analyses of returned samples confirmed that all rocks identified as carbonates using field measurements alone were calc-silicates and that chlorophyll associated with endolithic organisms was present in the one rock for which it was predicted. Rocks classified from field spectra as silicics and weathered mafics were recognized in the laboratory as metamorphosed monzonites and diorite schists. This discrepancy was likely due to rock coatings sampled by the field spectrometers compared to fresh rock interiors analyzed petrographically, in addition to somewhat different surfaces analyzed by laboratory thermal spectroscopy compared to field spectra.

An autonomous system has been developed to identify the presence of carbonates in near-IR reflectance spectra (0.35–2.5 μm). This system consists of a set of feature-extraction algorithms that operate in conjunction with a rule-based system to identify carbonates on the basis of presence and characteristics of absorption bands near 2.33 and 2.5 μm. This autonomous system was tested during the February 1999 Marsokhod field operations. While performance was compromised to some extent by noise problems associated with the spectrometer, the autonomous system successfully rejected all noisy spectra. Among the nonnoisy spectra that it accepted, it identified carbonates with a success rate of 70% compared with the performance of the field team, a success rate of 82–90% compared with the performance of the remote science team, and a false positive rate of 0%.

Corotating interaction regions (CIRs) and their successors play an important role in the structure and dynamics of the outer heliosphere. CIRs, consisting of a forward and reverse shock pair in association with a region of enhanced solar wind density and temperature, are a dominant structure in the solar wind at low heliographic latitudes at heliocentric distances between 2 and 8 AU. At larger heliocentric distances, CIRs spread, merge, and interact to form merged interaction regions (MIRs). MIRs are a dominant structure at low latitudes between 8 and 12 AU. At even larger heliocentric distances, considerable uncertainty remains regarding the small-scale structure of the solar wind. Solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field observations from the Pioneer 10 and Voyager 2 spacecraft were used to conduct a large-scale survey of CIRs and their successors over solar cycles 21 and 22 between heliocentric distances of 1 and 50 AU to categorize changes that occur as CIRs were convected outward from the Sun. At heliocentric distances less than 37 AU, similar changes were observed at similar heliocentric distances at different spacecraft during different portions of the solar cycle. These changes may reflect qualitative changes in the dynamics of the solar wind as CIRs spread and merge and the flux of kinetic energy available in solar wind streams declines with respect to the flux of thermal energy. At heliocentric distances greater than 37 AU, Pioneer 10 and Voyager 2 observed different types of structure. Interpretation of these differences is complicated by differences in the trajectories of the two spacecraft, and it remains to be determined whether they are associated with latitudinal gradients, solar cycle variations or the effects of interstellar pickup ions at Voyager 2.

We discuss the structure and evolution of CIRs and their successors in the outer helio- sphere. These structures undergo significant evolution as they are convected to greater heliocentric distances. A progression of different types of structure are observed at increasing distance from the Sun. Similar structures are observed at similar heliocentric distance at different portions of the solar cycle. CIRs and their successors are associated with many important physical processes in the outer heliosphere. We discuss the relationship between these structures and recurrent phenomena such as cosmic ray variations, and review some of the associated theoretical models on the role of corotating structures and global merged interaction regions (GMIRs) in global cosmic ray modulation. We also discuss some outstanding questions related to the origin of non-dispersive quasi-periodic particle enhancements associated with CIRs and their successors in the outer heliosphere.

Corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the middle heliosphere have distinct morpholog- ical features and associated patterns of turbulence and energetic particles. This report summarizes current understanding of those features and patterns, discusses how they can vary from case to case and with distance from the Sun and possible causes of those variations, presents an analytical model of the morphological features found in earlier qualitative models and numerical simulations, and identifies aspects of the features and patterns that have yet to be resolved.

Possible signatures of interstellar pickup hydrogen have been identified in data from the Pioneer 10 and 11 Ames plasma analyzers at locations out to beyond the orbit of Saturn, and at a wide range of longitudes in the heliosphere, both upstream and downstream in the interstellar wind. These signatures provide an extension of pickup ion observations out to beyond 15 AU heliocentric distance, including near where the maximum pickup hydrogen flux is expected. A depletion of interstellar pickup hydrogen downstream from the Sun in the interstellar flow may be indicated. These signatures are consistent with Ulysses pickup ion measurements.

Interstellar pickup ions, if they are thermalized, could produce a longitudinal asymmetry in solar wind temperature in the outer heliosphere. Between 1978 and mid-1992, the Pioneer 10 and Voyager 2 spacecraft were well situated to search for such an asymmetry. Pioneer 10 was headed downstream with respect to the local interstellar medium while Voyager 2 was headed upstream. Both spacecraft were at large heliocentric distances; by mid-1992, Pioneer 10 was at 55 AU, while Voyager 2 was at 37 AU. Measurements from these spacecraft and the Pioneer Venus Orbiter are complicated by solar cycle effects but suggest an upper limit of 5000 K for any asymmetry that might be present. These measurements are also consistent with no asymmetry. There is also some suggestion that the radial profile of solar wind temperature in the vicinity of the solar equator was steeper during the declining phase of the last solar cycle. The solar wind temperature has increased at Voyager 2 after mid-1992, but Voyager 2 has also been moving to higher Heliographic latitudes, where such an increase should be expected from the well-known latitudinal gradient in solar wind temperature that has been observed by Pioneer 11 and Ulysses.

In situ observations by different spacecraft have shown that the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) is associated with a narrow band of low speed high density solar wind. The inclination of the HCS and the three-dimensional structure of solar wind streams is related to the inclination of the coronal neutral line. Observations from the Ulysses spacecraft during the descending phase of solar cycle 22, when Wilcox Solar Observatory coronal field models suggest that the inclination of the coronal neutral line was between 50° and 70°, showed that the inclination of the HCS was ≃20° while solar wind streams were confined to heliographic latitudes less than 35°. At higher latitudes, low and medium speed solar wind disappeared and the solar wind speed was uniformly high. Observations from the Pioneer 11 - Voyager 2 spacecraft pair near the time of the 1986 solar minimum revealed a different structure. At that time the inclination of the coronal neutral line was unusually low (

For over three decades a succession of spacecraft have provided in situ measurements of interplanetary plasma and magnetic field parameters. These measurements span a range of heliocentric distances from 0.3 to 61 AU, and provide an explicit picture of the three-dimensional structure of the inner and outer heliosphere in the vicinity of the ecliptic plane, while ground-based interplanetary scintillation (IPS) measurements and observations from the Ulysses spacecraft extend our knowledge of the inner and outer heliosphere to higher latitudes. The structure of the heliosphere varies dramatically over the course of a solar cycle. Much of this variation can be related to changes in the structure and inclination of the coronal magnetic field.

Long-term enhancements in solar wind speed over timescales on the order of a year appear to be a common feature throughout the heliosphere over heliocentric distances that range from less than 0.72 AU to greater than 60. The origin of these events remains to be determined, but they are almost certainly associated with long-term variations at the solar wind source, in contrast with smaller-scale structures such as CIRs, MIRs, and GMIRs which are dynamical in origin. We present a survey of the long-term speed enhancements observed at the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO), IMP 8, Voyager 2, and Pioneer 10 between 1974 and 1994 and compare this with published reports of smaller-scale events such as MIRs. We examine several of these long-term speed enhancements in detail to identify and characterize aspects of their structure, then describe how that structure evolves with heliocentric distance. Finally we discuss some of the implications of these events.

It has been suggested by Richardson et al. [1995] that the solar wind shows signs of deceleration due to mass-loading by interstellar pickup ions. They based their conclusion on observations from the Voyager 2 and IMP 8 spacecraft. Observations from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO), IMP 8, Voyager 2, and Pioneer 10 spacecraft are compared to look for this deceleration. While these comparisons suggest the possibility of deceleration at Voyager 2, the magnitude of this deceleration appears to be significantly less than the deceleration reported by Richardson et al. [1995]. Some of this difference could be explained by a north-south asymmetry in solar wind speed during solar cycle 21. The implications of these results are discussed, along with possibilities for further investigations.

Solar wind measurements from the Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, Voyager 2, IMP 8, and Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) spacecraft were examined to search for long-term periodicities during the last three solar cycles. For the time of the last solar maximum, these measurements confirm the existence of the periodic 1.3-year enhancements in solar wind velocity reported by Richardson et al. (1994). For most of the preceding two solar cycles, long-term velocity enhancements occurred that were similar in structure but lacked the 1.3-year periodicity. It appears that long-term enhancements in solar wind velocity, with durations on the order of a few months to a year, are a common feature throughout the heliosphere.

Prominent enhancements in Doppler scintillation lasting a fraction of a day (solar source several degrees wide) and overlying the neutral line represent the signature of the heliospheric current sheet and the apparent interplanetary manifestation of coronal streamers near the Sun. This first detection of coronal streamers in radio scintillation measurements provides the link between in situ measurements of the spatial wavenumber spectrum of electron density fluctuations beyond 0.3 AU and earlier measurements deduced from radio scintillation and scattering observations inside 0.3 AU. Significant differences between the density spectra of fast streams and slow solar wind associated with the heliospheric current sheet near the Sun reinforce the emerging picture that high-and low-speed flows are organized by the large-scale solar magnetic field, and that while the contrast between solar wind properties of the two flows is highest near the Sun, it undergoes substantial erosion in the ecliptic plane as the solar wind expands.

Solar wind observations from the IMP 8 and Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) spacecraft from 1982 until 1988 are combined to construct synoptic maps of solar wind parameters near 1 AU. Each map consists of 6 months of hourly averaged solar wind data, binned by heliographic latitude and Carrington longitude and projected back to the Sun. These maps show the structure and time evolution of solar wind streams near 1 AU in the heliographic latitudes of ±7.25° and provide an explicit picture of several phenomena, such as gradients, changes in the inclination of the heliospheric current sheet, and the relative positions of various structures in the inner heliosphere, that is difficult to obtain from single-spacecraft observations. The stream structure varied significantly during the last solar cycle. Between 1982 and early 1985, solar wind parameters did not depend strongly on heliographic latitude. During the last solar minimum, the solar wind developed significant latitudinal structure, and high-speed streams were excluded from the vicinity of the solar equator. The interplanetary magnetic field was strongly correlated with the coronal field, and the current sheet tended to coincide with the coronal neutral line. The solar wind speed showed the expected correlations with temperature, interplanetary magnetic field, and distance from the current sheet. The solar wind speed was anticorrelated with density, but the regions of highest density occurred east of the heliospheric current sheet and the regions of lowest solar wind speed. This is consistent with compression at the leading edge of high-speed streams.

Solar wind measurements from the Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and Voyager 2 spacecraft are now available through mid-1993. These measurements extend our knowledge of the outer heliosphere to heliographic latitudes that range between -10 deg and 17.5 deg, and provide insight into the variation with solar cycle of the structure of the distant solar wind. The average temperature, mass flux density, dynamic pressure, and kinetic and thermal energy flux densities varied strongly with solar cycle at the latitude of Pioneer 11 (10 deg to 17 deg N), but were almost constant in the vicinity of the solar equator. These parameters may have increased with latitude between the solar equator and 17 deg N. There was also a short-term variation in average solar wind parameters near the time of the 1986 solar minimum, when the inclination of the heliospheric current sheet dropped below the latitude of Pioneer 11.

During the late declining phase of the solar cycle, the tilt of the solar magnetic dipole with respect to the Sun's rotation axis leads to large-scale organization of the solar wind, such that alternating regions of high- and low-speed solar wind are observed in the ecliptic plane. In this paper, we use Doppler scintillation measurements to investigate mass flux of these two types of solar wind in the ecliptic plane and inside 0.3 AU, where in situ measurements have not been possible. To the extent that Doppler scintillation reflects mass flux, we find that mass flux in high-speed streams: (1) is lower (by a factor of approximately 2.2) than the mass flux of the average solar wind in the heliocentric distance range of 0.3-0.5 AU; (2) is lower still (by as much as a factor of about 4) than the mass flux of the slow solar wind associated with the streamer belt; and (3) appears to grow with heliocentric distance. These Doppler scintillation results are consistent with the equator to pole decrease in mass flux observed in earlier spectral broadening measurements, and with trends and differences between high- and low-speed solar wind observed by in situ measurements in the range of 0.3-0.1 AU. The mass flux results suggest that the solar wind flow in high-speed streams is convergent towards the ecliptic near the Sun, becoming less convergent and approaching radial with increasing heliocentric distance beyond 0.3 AU. The variability of mass flux observed within equatorial and polar high-speed streams close to the Sun is strikingly low. This low variability implies that, as Ulysses currently ascends to higher latitudes and spends more time in the south polar high-speed stream after crossing the heliocentric current sheet, it can expect to observe a marked decrease in variations of both mass flux and solar wind speed, a trend that appears to have started already.

Magnetometer data obtained over the course of the previous solar cycle by the Pioneer Venus orbiter at about 0.7 AU and IMP 8 at 1.0 AU are used to compare the long-term behavior of the IMF at these two heliocentric distances. Similarities include an enhancement in the typical or median field magnitude during the declining phase of the solar cycle (as compared to solar maximum or minimum), slight decreases in the Parker spiral angle from the declining phase through solar minimum, similar trends in the Alfvenic and magnetosonic Mach numbers, and a remarkably consistent sector structure. Differences include the temporal behavior of the high-field tail of the field distribution, showing that high fields are most frequently observed during solar maximum at the Earth but during the declining phase of activity at Venus. This feature suggests that the perceived occurrence history of large fields from transient disturbances such as coronal mass ejections is a sensitive function of position within the heliosphere.

The Kepler Mission relies on precise differential photometry to detect the 80 parts per million (ppm) signal from an Earth-Sun equivalent transit. Such precision requires superb instrument stability on time scales up to ~2 days and systematic error removal to better than 20 ppm. To this end, the spacecraft and photometer underwent 67 days of commissioning, which included several data sets taken to characterize the photometer performance. Because Kepler has no shutter, we took a series of dark images prior to the dust cover ejection, from which we measured the bias levels, dark current, and read noise. These basic detector properties are essentially unchanged from ground-based tests, indicating that the photometer is working as expected. Several image artifacts have proven more complex than when observed during ground testing, as a result of their interactions with starlight and the greater thermal stability in flight, which causes the temperature-dependent artifact variations to be on the timescales of transits. Because of Kepler's unprecedented sensitivity and stability, we have also seen several unexpected systematics that affect photometric precision. We are using the first 43 days of science data to characterize these effects and to develop detection and mitigation methods that will be implemented in the calibration pipeline. Major advances in the physics of the outer heliosphere are reviewed for the 1987-1990 time frame. Emphasis is placed on five broad topics: the detailed structure of the solar wind at large heliocentric distances, the global structure of the interplanetary field, latidudinal variations and meridional flows, radial and temporal variations, and the interaction of the solar wind with the local interstellar medium.

The mass flux density and velocity of the solar wind at polar latitudes can provide strong constraints on solar wind acceleration mechanisms. We use plasma observations from the first polar passage of the Ulysses spacecraft to investigate this question. We find that the mass flux density and velocity are too high to reconcile with acceleration of the solar wind by classical thermal conduction alone. Therefore acceleration of the high-speed wind must involve extended deposition of energy by some other mechanism, either as heat or as a direct effective pressure, due possibly to waves and/or turbulence, or completely non-classical heat transport.

The major uncertainties in studies of the multi-scale structure of the Universe arise not from observational errors but from the variety of legitimate definitions and detection methods for individual structures. To facilitate the study of these methodological dependencies we have carried out 12 different analyses defining structures in various ways. This has been done in a purely geometrical way by utilizing the HOP algorithm as a unique parameter-free method of assigning groups of galaxies to local density maxima or minima. From three density estimation techniques (smoothing kernels, Bayesian Blocks and self organizing maps) applied to three data sets (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, the Millennium Simulation and randomly distributed points) we tabulate information that can be used to construct catalogs of structures connected to local density maxima and minima. The resulting sizes follow continuous multi-scale distributions with no indication of the presence of a discrete hierarchy. We also introduce a novel void finder that utilizes a method to assemble Delaunay tetrahedra into connected structures and characterizes regions very nearly empty of galaxies in the source catalog., Comment: 54 pages, 10 figures, submitted to ApJ

STUDIES of the solar wind in the inner heliosphere (between the solar-wind source surface at ∼0.01 AU and 0.3 AU) are hampered by the lack of in situ spacecraft measurements. Radio propagation measurements—using both natural1–7 and spacecraft8–14 radio signals—have provided many insights, but information on large-scale solar-wind structure inside 0.3 AU that can be related to coronal features or direct spacecraft measurements at larger distances has nevertheless remained elusive. Here we report the detection of solar-wind structure between 0.08 and 0.53 AU, based on the response of the 13-cm radio signals from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter to electron-density fluctuations and solar-wind speed within this region. These Doppler scintillation measurements were made during the late declining phase of the most recent cycle of solar activity, when the solar wind exhibited recurrent high-speed streams. Near 0.5 AU, we find narrow regions of enhanced scintillation which appear to be associated with compressed plasma at the leading edges of these streams, consistent with previous scintillation measurements15,16. Inside 0.2 AU, however, scintillation enhancements are conspicuously absent from the fast streams, and instead occur in regions where the average solar wind is slow. They exhibit high variability, and appear to be the interplanetary manifestation of coronal mass ejections. The plasma structures giving rise to these enhanced scintillations apparently undergo significant evolution inside 0.3 AU.

Co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) and their associated shock pairs are dominant structures in the solar wind between the heliocentric distances of 2 and 8 AU. At larger heliocentric distances, these structures undergo a qualitative change. Shocks decay to a point where they are often difficult to detect, and may have little influence on the dynamics of the solar wind. Interaction regions spread and merge, though they appear to retain their identity to surprisingly large distances from the Sun. Solar wind and IMF data from the Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and Voyager 2 spacecraft were used to conduct a comprehensive survey of CIRs and their successors between heliocentric distances of 1 and 55 AU over the last two solar cycles. The structure of the solar wind varied in a consistent fashion with heliocentric distance. Similar structures were observed at similar heliocentric distances by all three spacecraft during different portions of the solar cycle.

A progression of different types of structure are observed at increasing distance from the Sun. Similar structures are observed at similar heliocentric distance at different portions of the solar cycle. CIRs and their successors are associated with many important physical processes in the outer heliosphere. We discuss the relationship between these structures and recurrent phenomena such as cosmic ray variations, and review some of the associated theoretical models on the role of corotating structures and global merged interaction regions (GMIRs) in global cosmic ray modulation. We also discuss some outstanding questions related to the origin of non-dispersive quasi-periodic particle enhancements associated with CIRs and their successors in the outer heliosphere.

We have reviewed the solar wind data obtained over a period of more than three decades. The data coverage on the Omnitape begins on 27 November 1963 and ends on 31 December 1993, for the version used by us. The coverage is very uneven, ranging from less than 40% to greater than 80%. We find that a correlation continues to exist between the measured values of the solar wind speed (V) and the geomagnetic index Ap. For the period when the coverage is greater than or equal to 85%, the data fit the equation: V (km/s) = 11.7 A(sub p) + 260. The correlation coefficient is 0.8, at a confidence level of 99.95%. However, we find that the predicted value of V may differ from the observed value by as much as 15% for a year in which the coverage is poorer. A comparison of IMP 8 with Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) data indicates that the average values at the former are systematically higher by as much as 35 km/s (approximately 8%) for an overlapping time period. Also, we draw attention to the observed three solar cycle periodicity in A(sub p) data for the 1932 to 1994 period and its implications for forecasting the parameters for solar cycle 23 as well as on the computations of the modulation parameters for cosmic rays.

We review the observed properties of the solar wind in the outer heliosphere, including observations from Voyager and the Pioneers, as well as from inner heliospheric probes as appropriate. These observations are crucial to modeling of the heliosphere and its interactions with the interstellar medium, since the wind ram pressure and its temporal variations are important in understanding the distance to the termination shock and heliopause and how those boundaries might vary in time. We focus on results since Solar Wind 7. Among the issues we will discuss are: (1) the time scales for and statistical properties of variations in the ram pressure in the outer heliosphere, and how those variations might affect the morphology of the heliospheric/interstellar medium interface; (2) the question of possible solar wind slowing in the outer heliosphere due to the pick-up of interstellar ions; (3) the issue of whether there is bulk heating of the solar wind associated either with interstellar ion pick-up or with continued heating due to stream-stream interactions; (4) evidence for latitudinal variations in solar wind properties; and (5) the 1.3 year periodicities apparent in the outer heliosphere, and the close correspondence with similar variations seen with inner heliospheric probes.

Throughout most of the last three solar cycles, the Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, Voyager 2, IMP 8, and Pioneer Venus Orbiter spacecraft have observed long-term enhancements in solar wind velocity. These enhancements are typically on the order of 100-200 km/s, with durations on the order of several months to over a year. They are observed over a range of heliocentric distances that ranges from 0.72 to more than 60 AU, which suggests that they are a characteristic feature throughout the entire heliosphere, at least in the vicinity of the solar equator. They appear to be related to the 'long term velocity shifts' reported by Gazis [1987], but are much more widespread. Since the last solar minimum, they have recurred with the 13-year periodicity reported by Richardson et al [1994], but prior to the last solar minimum there were long intervals were his periodicity was different or absent. We examine and characterize these long-term velocity enhancements and compare them to shorter-term variations in the solar wind such as CMEs, interaction regions, merged interaction regions (MIRs) and global merged interaction regions (GMIRs).

This paper examines the non-radial components of solar wind flow. The standard deviation of the east-west flow shows a clear solar cycle dependence which persists into the outer heliosphere. The magnitude of the east-west flow as observed by Voyager 2 may also vary with solar cycle. The standard deviation in the east-west flow angle decreases with radial distance out to 20 AU, then remains roughly constant. This mimics the behavior of the radial velocity standard deviations, suggesting that the east-west flows are generated mainly by velocity changes in the solar wind. The north-south flow angles observed by Voyager suggest that an anti-equatorial meridional flow is present.

Between 1980 and 1992, the Pioneer 10, Voyager 2, and Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) spacecraft were in locations that made them were well-suited to search for radial trends and longitudinal asymmetries in solar wind parameters. Pioneer 10 and Voyager 2 travelled between the heliocentric distances of 21–54 AU and 6–36 AU respectively. Pioneer 10 was headed downstream with respect to the local interstellar medium (LISM) while Voyager 2 was headed upstream. Meanwhile, PVO was at 0.72 AU. We use data from these three spacecraft and Pioneer 11 to search for and set upper limits on possible asymmetries in solar wind velocity and temperature and on possible deceleration of the solar wind as a result of its interaction with the LISM.

This paper presents some new and some updated data on the variation of the solar wind with solar cycle and distance from the Sun. The dynamic pressure of the solar wind is a minimum at solar maximum, the same time the standard deviation in pressure is a maximum, so the crossing of the termination shock is most likely at the next solar maximum in 2001. The degree of correlation between plasma parameters maximizes at solar minimum, possibly because stream interactions are a minimum then. The standard deviations of the radial velocity decrease rapidly out to 20 AU, then flatten out. Standard deviations of the density and temperature decrease with distance less steeply than those of the speed.

Observations of solar Lyman alpha have been interpreted as indicating that the polar mass flux density is lower than the equatorial average. This led Lallement et al (1986) to make a parametric study of solar wind acceleration, along the lines of earlier the Munro-Jackson study (1977), in which they concluded that uncertainties in the polar mass flux were large enough to be consistent with two extreme opposites: (1) a substantial energy supply beyond classical thermal conduction is required; or (2) classical thermal conduction is adequate to drive the flow. This ambiguity has been clarified by Ulysses observations of the polar outflow (Phillips et al, 1994). The polar mass flux density lies in the middle of the range studies by Lallement et al (1986), which suggests that extended heating is going on out to at least approximately 5 AU. Independent, purely energetic arguments can be made to estimate the required coronal source (electron) temperature that would be required to account for the observed energy flux density. An electron temperature of at least 2 x 10(exp 6) K would be required for the classical conduction flux density to be comparable to the total energy flux density; such a high temperature is thought to be unlikely in a coronal hole. These arguments strongly suggest that some extended heating or momentum transfer mechanism is required to drive the solar wind from the polar coronal hole. A number of mechanisms are discussed.

The Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and Voyager 2 spacecraft were launched in 1972, 1974, and 1977, respectively. While these three spacecraft are all at comparatively low heliographic latitudes compared with Ulysses, their observations span almost two solar cycles, a range of heliocentric distances from 1 to 57 AU, and provide a unique insight into the long-term variability of the global structure of the solar wind. We examine the spatial and temporal variation of average solar wind parameters and fluxes. Our observations suggest that the global structure of the outer heliosphere during the declining phase of the solar cycle at heliographic latitudes up to 17.5°N was characterized by two competing phenomena: 1) a large-scale increase of solar wind density, temperature, mass flux, dynamic pressure, kinetic energy flux, and thermal energy flux with heliographic latitude, similar to the large-scale latitudinal gradient of velocity seen in IPS observations, 2) a small-scale decrease in velocity and temperature, and increase in density near the heliospheric current sheet, which is associated with a band of low speed, low temperature, and high density solar wind similar to that observed in the inner heliosphere.

The properties of the large-scale global merged interaction region (GMIR) generated by the intense solar events of March and June 1991 are studied using the available solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field, and energetic particle data from the observing network of Pioneer 10 and Voyagers 1 and 2 in the outer heliosphere. At heliocentric distances extending to 55 AU the delayed effects of this enhanced solar activity are observed in the form of large increases in the solar wind velocity and interplanetary magnetic field and significant decreases in the galactic cosmic ray intensity. For low-energy ions (5-MeV protons) there was a single long-lived event extending over a period of some 6 months. Near the strongest interplanetary disturbances the H and He spectra are best represented by similar exponentials in momentum/nucleon (i.e., particle velocity at these energies). Over the rest of the event the characteristic momentum for He, (P_0)_(He) is generally ∼0.66 for hydrogen. These spectra and the consistently low H/He ratio (25.3) at 2 MeV/nucleon closely resemble that observed in corrotating interaction regions events. Despite the strong north/south asymmetry in the solar activity, the interplanetary disturbances produced the same net decrease in the galactic cosmic ray intensity of ions >70 MeV at the three widely separated spacecraft when the effects of the long-term recovery are taken into account. A comparison of the relative intensity of MeV ions at these three spacecraft suggest that the most intense solar events occurred on the back side of the Sun in time periods adjacent to the March and June episodes of solar activity. It is argued that this GMIR as a system is responsible for the low-frequency radio emission observed by the Voyager Plasma Wave experiment some 1.46 years after the onset of the March 1991 activity.

Three methods for detecting and characterizing structure in point data, such as that generated by redshift surveys, are described: classification using self-organizing maps, segmentation using Bayesian blocks, and density estimation using adaptive kernels. The first two methods are new, and allow detection and characterization of structures of arbitrary shape and at a wide range of spatial scales. These methods should elucidate not only clusters, but also the more distributed, wide-ranging filaments and sheets, and further allow the possibility of detecting and characterizing an even broader class of shapes. The methods are demonstrated and compared in application to three data sets: a carefully selected volume-limited sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey redshift data, a similarly selected sample from the Millennium Simulation, and a set of points independently drawn from a uniform probability distribution -- a so-called Poisson distribution. We demonstrate a few of the many ways in which these methods elucidate large scale structure in the distribution of galaxies in the nearby Universe.

The Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and Voyager 2 spacecraft are now at heliocentric distances of 50, 32 and 33 AU, and heliographic latitudes of 3.5 deg N, 17 deg N, and 0 deg N, respectively. Pioneer 11 and Voyager 2 are at similar celestial longitudes, while Pioneer l0 is on the opposite side of the sun. The baselines defined by these spacecraft make it possible to resolve radial, longitudinal, and latitudinal variations of solar wind parameters. The solar wind temperature decreases with increasing heliocentric distance out to a distance of 10-15 AU. At larger heliocentric distances, this gradient disappears. These high solar wind temperatures in the outer heliosphere have persisted for at least 10 years, which suggests that they are not a solar cycle effect. The solar wind temperature varied with heliographic latitude during the most recent solar minimum. The solar wind temperature at Pioneer 11 and Voyager 2 was higher than that seen at Pioneer 10 for an extended period of time, which suggests the existence of a large-scale variation of temperature with celestial longitude, but the contribution of transient phenomena is yet to be clarified.

Pioneers 10 and 11, and Voyager 2, have active plasma analyzers as they proceed through heliocentric distances of the order of 30-50 AU, facilitating comparative studies of the global character of the outer solar wind and its variation over the solar cycle. Careful study of these data show that wind ion temperature remains constant beyond 15 AU, and that there may be large-scale variations of temperature with celestial longitude and heliographic latitude. There has thus far been no indication of a heliospheric terminal shock.

The IMP 8 and Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) spacecraft explore the region of heliographic latitudes between 8 deg N and 8 deg S. Solar wind observations from these spacecraft are used to construct synoptic maps of solar wind parameters in this region. These maps provide an explicit picture of the structure of high speed streams near 1 AU and how that structure varies with time. From 1982 until early 1985, solar wind parameters varied little with latitude. During the last solar minimum, the solar wind developed strong latitudinal structure; high speed streams were excluded from the vicinity of the solar equator. Synoptic maps of solar wind speed are compared with maps of the coronal source surface magnetic field. This comparison reveals the expected correlation between solar wind speed near 1 AU, the strength of the coronal magnetic field, and distance from the coronal neutral line.

[1] Potential field source surface models of the coronal magnetic field, based on Mt. Wilson Observatory synoptic magnetograms, are used to infer the coronal hole sources of low-heliolatitude solar wind over approximately the last three solar cycles. Related key parameters like interplanetary magnetic field and bulk velocity are also calculated. The results illustrate how the evolving contribution of the polar hole sources relative to that from low-latitude and midlatitude active region hole sources can explain solar magnetic field control of long-term interplanetary variations. In particular, the enduring consistent magnetogram record and continuous model displays produce a useful overview of the solar control of interplanetary cycles and trends that affect space weather.

A survey of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) magnetometer and plasma data from 1979-1980, shows that the occurrence frequency of interplanetary shocks, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and stream interactions observed at 0.7 AU exhibits a solar cycle variation. As previously found at 1 AU, the observed number of both interplanetary shocks and CMEs peaks during solar maximum (approximately 16 and approximately 27 per year, respectively) and reaches a low during solar minimum (approximately 0 and approximately 7 per year, respectively), in phase with the variation in smoothed sunspot number. The number of stream interactions observed varies in the opposite manner, having a minimum during solar maximum (approximately 15 per year) and a maximum during solar minimum (approximately 34 per year). The percentage of CMEs and stream interactions producing interplanetary shocks also varies during the solar-cycle and exhibits interesting behavior during the declining phase. While the number of CMEs observed during this phase is decreasing, the percentage of CMEs producing interplanetary shocks reaches a maximum. Also, while the number of stream interactions observed is increasing, but has not reached maximum during the declining phase, the percentage of stream interactions producing interplanety shocks is at a maximum.

At the end of 1992, the Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and Voyager 2 spacecraft were at heliocentric distances of 56.0, 37.3, and 39.0 AU and heliographic latitudes of 3.3 deg N, 17.4 deg N, and 8.6 deg S, respectively. Pioneer 11 and Voyager 2 are at similar celestial longitudes, while Pioneer 10 is on the opposite side of the Sun. All three spacecraft have working plasma analyzers, so intercomparison of data from these spacecraft provides important information about the global character of the solar wind in the outer heliosphere. The averaged solar wind speed continued to exhibit its well-known variation with solar cycle: Even at heliocentric distances greater than 50 AU, the average speed is highest during the declining phase of the solar cycle and lowest near solar minimum. There was a strong latitudinal gradient in solar wind speed between 3 deg and 17 deg N during the last solar minimum, but this gradient has since disappeared. The solar wind temperature declined with increasing heliocentric distance out to a heliocentric distance of at least 20 AU; this decline appeared to continue at larger heliocentric distances, but temperatures in the outer heliosphere were suprisingly high. While Pioneer 10 and Voyager 2 observed comparable solar wind temperatures, the temperature at Pioneer 11 was significantly higher, which suggests the existence of a large-scale variation of temperature with heliographic longitude. There was also some suggestion that solar wind temperatures were higher near solar minimum.
