First-principles calculations are employed to study the ferroelectric properties and the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) of antimony sulfur iodide (SbSI). The BPVE enables direct sunlight-to-electricity conversion in homogeneous materials and, in ferroelectric compounds, can be tuned via an electric field controlling the polarization. However, most ferroelectrics are oxides with large band gaps exceeding visible light energy, limiting their photovoltaic performance. Featuring a visible-range band gap, SbSI instead combines remarkable photovoltaic capabilities with a spin-textured band structure, coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom. The calculations predict ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases with comparable band gaps but distinct Rashba-Dresselhaus and Weyl-like spin textures relevant for spintronics. The BPVE is driven by the linear and circular photogalvanic effects, exhibiting large photoconductivities under visible light. Furthermore, it can serve to identify the phase of the material, with the circular photogalvanic effect which also reflects spin-texture changes. The pursuit of quantum advantage in simulating many-body quantum systems on quantum computers has gained momentum with advancements in quantum hardware. This work focuses on leveraging the symmetry properties of these systems, particularly particle number conservation. We investigate the qubit objects corresponding to number projection operators in the standard Jordan-Wigner fermion-to-qubit mapping, and prove a number of their properties. This reveals connections between these operators and the generalised binomial coefficients originally introduced by Kravchuk in his research on orthogonal polynomials. The generalized binomial coefficients are visualized in a Pascal's pyramid structure.

The rich and fascinating physics of topological spin textures in van der Waals two-dimensional magnets has motivated recent growing interests, though a comprehensive understanding remains elusive. Here, in atomistic simulations on monolayer CrSBr, we find two magnetic phases emerging under non-equilibrium conditions at distinct temperatures, a standard ferromagnetic transition Tc and a lower temperature T*. Moreover, the real-space analysis of the spin texture reveals the emergence of metastable topological bimeron defects below T*, showing an algebraic-like decaying spin-spin correlation function. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, induced by the local site asymmetry in the centrosymmetric CrSBr monolayer, is proved to be the origin of the bimerons formation. Furthermore, the increasing bimerons density upon increasing the cooling rate follows a Kibble-Zurek behavior, suggesting a handle to drive and control topological bimerons below T*. Our results put forward CrSBr as an important candidate for the investigation of the dynamical behavior of bimerons in vdW magnets.

We consider the free propagation geometry of a light beam (or fluid of light) in a multimode waveguide. As a result of the effective photon-photon interactions, the photon fluid thermalizes to an equilibrium state during its conservative propagation. In this configuration, Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) thermalization and condensation of classical light waves have been recently observed experimentally in graded index multimode optical fibers characterized by a 2D parabolic trapping potential. As well-known, the properties of RJ condensation differ substantially from those of Bose-Einstein (BE) condensation: The condensate fraction decreases quadratically with the temperature for BE condensation, while it decreases linearly for RJ condensation. Furthermore, for quantum particles the heat capacity tends to zero at small temperatures, and it takes a constant value in the classical particle limit at high temperatures. This is in contrast with classical RJ waves, where the specific heat takes a constant value at small temperatures, and tends to vanish above the condensation transition in the normal (uncondensed) state. Here, we reconcile the thermodynamic properties of BE and RJ condensation: By introducing a frequency cut-off inherent to light propagation in a waveguide, we derive generalized expressions of the thermodynamic properties that include the RJ and BE limits as particular cases. We extend the approach to encompass negative temperatures. In contrast to positive temperatures, the specific heat does not display a singular behavior at negative temperatures, reflecting the non-critical nature of the transition to a macroscopic population of the highest energy level. Our work contributes to understanding the quantum-to-classical crossover in the equilibrium properties of light, within a versatile experimental platform based on nonlinear optical propagation in multimode waveguides., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Gaining growing attention in spintronics is a class of magnets displaying zero net magnetization and spin-split electronic bands called altermagnets. Here, by combining density functional theory and symmetry analysis, we show that RuF$_4$ monolayer is a two-dimensional $d$-wave altermagnet. Spin-orbit coupling leads to pronounced spin splitting of the electronic bands at the $\Gamma$ point by $\sim 100$ meV and turns the RuF$_4$ into a weak ferromagnet due to non trivial spin-momentum locking that cants the Ru magnetic moments. The net magnetic moment scales linearly with the spin-orbit coupling strength. Using group theory we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian capturing the spin-splitting and spin-momentum locking of the electronic bands. Disentanglement of the altermagnetic and spin-orbit coupling induced spin splitting uncovers to which extent the altermagnetic properties are affected by the spin-orbit coupling. Our results move the spotlight to the non trivial spin-momentum locking and weak ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional altermagnets relevant for novel venues in this emerging field of material science research., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

The recent discovery of the persistence of long-range magnetic order when van der Waals layered magnets are thinned towards the monolayer limit has provided a tunable platform for the engineering of novel magnetic structures and devices. Here, we study the evolution of the electronic structure of CrGeTe$_3$ as a function of electron doping in the surface layer. From angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe spectroscopic fingerprints that this electron doping drives a marked increase in $T_\mathrm{C}$, reaching values more than double that of the undoped material, in agreement with recent studies using electrostatic gating. Together with density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that, surprisingly, the increased $T_\mathrm{C}$ is mediated by the population of spin-minority Cr $t_{2g}$ states, forming a half-metallic 2D electron gas at the surface. We show how this promotes a novel variant of double exchange, and unlocks a significant influence of the Ge -- which was previously thought to be electronically inert in this system -- in mediating Cr-Cr exchange., Comment: 10 pages including supplementary information

Classical nonlinear waves exhibit, as a general rule, an irreversible process of thermalization toward the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution. On the other hand, several recent experiments revealed a remarkable effect of spatial organization of an optical beam that propagates through a graded-index multimode optical fiber (MMF), a phenomenon termed beam self-cleaning. Our aim here is to evidence the qualitative impact of disorder (weak random mode coupling) on the process of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization by considering two different experimental configurations. In a first experiment, we launch speckle beams in a relatively long MMF. Our results report a clear and definite experimental demonstration of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization through light propagation in MMFs, over a broad range of kinetic energy (i.e., degree of spatial coherence) of the injected speckle beam. In particular, the property of energy equipartition among the modes is clearly observed in the condensed regime. The experimental results also evidence the double turbulence cascade process: while the power flows toward the fundamental mode (inverse cascade), the energy flows toward the higher-order modes (direct cascade). In a 2nd experiment, a coherent laser beam is launched into a relatively short MMF length. It reveals an effect of beam cleaning driven by an incipient process of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization. As discussed through numerical simulations, the fast process of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization observed in the 1st experiment can be attributed due to a random phase dynamics among the modes, which is favoured by the injection of a speckle beam and the increased impact of disorder in the long fiber system.

Bilayer CrI$_3$ attracted much attention owing to peculiar switching between the layered ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order upon stacking alternation. This finding pointed out the importance of the apparently small interlayer exchange, yet, existing literature addresses only its isotropic part. To fill this gap, we combine the density functional theory with Hamiltonian modeling to examine the anisotropic interlayer exchange in bilayer CrI$_3$ - Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) and the Kitaev interaction (KI). We develop and apply a novel computational procedure that yields the off-diagonal exchange matrix elements with $\mu$eV accuracy. Inspecting two types of bilayer stacking, we found a weak interlayer KI and much stronger DMI between the sublattices of monoclinic bilayer and their complete absence in rhombohedral bilayer. We show how these anisotropic interactions depend on the interlayer distance, stacking sequence, and the spin-orbit coupling strength and suggest the dominant superexchange processes at play. In addition, we demonstrate that the single-ion anisotropy largely depends on stacking, increasing by 50% from monoclinic to rhombohedral structure. Remarkably, our findings prove that iodines, owing to their spatially extended 5p orbitals featuring strong spin-orbit coupling, are extremely efficient in mediating DMI across the van der Waals gap in two-dimensional magnetic heterostructures. Given that similar findings were previously demonstrated only in metallic multilayers where the DMI shows a much longer range, our study gives promise that the chiral control of spin textures can be achieved in two-dimensional semiconducting magnetic bilayers whose ligands feature strong spin-orbit coupling., Comment: 17 one-column pages, 3 figures, submitted for publication

Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ is a rare example of a layered ferrimagnet. It has recently been shown to host a colossal angular magnetoresistance as the spin orientation is rotated from the in- to out-of-plane direction, proposed to be underpinned by a topological nodal-line degeneracy in its electronic structure. Nonetheless, the origins of its ferrimagnetic structure remain controversial, while its experimental electronic structure, and the role of correlations in shaping this, are little explored to date. Here, we combine x-ray and photoemission-based spectroscopies with first-principles calculations, to probe the elemental-selective electronic structure and magnetic order in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. Through these, we identify a marked Mn-Te hybridisation, which weakens the electronic correlations and enhances the magnetic anisotropy. We demonstrate how this strengthens the magnetic frustration in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$, which is key to stabilising its ferrimagnetic order, and find a crucial role of both exchange interactions extending beyond nearest-neighbours and anti-symmetric exchange in dictating its ordering temperature. Together, our results demonstrate a powerful methodology of using experimental electronic structure probes to constrain the parameter space for first-principles calculations of magnetic materials, and through this approach, reveal a pivotal role played by covalency in stabilising the ferrimagnetic order in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$.

Although the temperature of a thermodynamic system is usually believed to be a positive quantity, under particular conditions, negative temperature equilibrium states are also possible. Negative temperature equilibriums have been observed with spin systems, cold atoms in optical lattices and two-dimensional quantum superfluids. Here we report the observation of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization of light waves to negative temperature equilibrium states. The optical wave relaxes to the equilibrium state through its propagation in a multimode optical fiber, i.e., in a conservative Hamiltonian system. The bounded energy spectrum of the optical fiber enables negative temperature equilibriums with high energy levels (high order fiber modes) more populated than low energy levels (low order modes). Our experiments show that negative temperature speckle beams are featured, in average, by a non-monotonous radial intensity profile. The experimental results are in quantitative agreement with the Rayleigh-Jeans theory without free parameters. Bringing negative temperatures to the field of optics opens the door to the investigation of fundamental issues of negative temperature states in a flexible experimental environment., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

We study from first principles the magnetic, electronic, orbital and structural properties of the LaMnO3 doped with gallium replacing the Mn-site. The gallium doping reduces the Jahn-Teller effect, and consequently the bandgap. Surprisingly, the system does not go towards a metallic phase because of the Mn-bandwidth reduction. The Ga-doping tends to reduce the orbital order typical of bulk antiferromagnetic LaMnO3 and consequently weakens the antiferromagnetic phase. The Ga-doping favors the G-type orbital order and layered-ordered ferromagnetic perovskite at x=0.50, both effects contribute to the formation of the insulating ferromagnetic phase in LaMn1-xGaxO3., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables

We address the problem of thermalization in the presence of a time-dependent disorder in the framework of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation with a random potential. The thermalization to the Rayleigh-Jeans distribution is driven by the nonlinearity. On the other hand, the structural disorder is responsible for a relaxation toward the homogeneous equilibrium distribution (particle equipartition), which thus inhibits thermalization (energy equipartition). On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we derive a kinetic equation that accounts for the presence of strong disorder. The theory unveils the interplay of disorder and nonlinearity. It unexpectedly reveals that a non-equilibrium process of condensation and thermalization can take place in the regime where disorder effects dominate over nonlinear effects. We validate the theory by numerical simulations of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and the derived kinetic equation, which are found in quantitative agreement without using adjustable parameters. Motivated by the recent wealth of exotic magnetic phases emerging in two-dimensional frustrated lattices, we investigate the origin of possible magnetism in the monolayer family of triangular lattice materials $MX_2$ ($M$={V, Mn, Ni}, $X$={Cl, Br, I}). We first show that consideration of general properties such as filling and hybridization enables to formulate trends for the most relevant magnetic interaction parameters. In particular, we observe that the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be effectively tuned through the ligand elements as the considered 3$d$ transition metal ions do not strongly contribute to the anisotropic component of the inter-site exchange interaction. Consequently, we find that the corresponding SOC matrix-elements differ significantly from the atomic limit. In a next step and by using two complementary approaches based on first principles, we extract realistic effective spin models and find that in the case of heavy ligand elements, SOC effects manifest in anisotropic exchange and single-ion anisotropy only for specific fillings.

In this work we analyze the finite-size effects on the structural properties and on the polarization of the rhombohedral phase of HfO$_2$ subjected to a biaxial compressive strain. We show how the presence of surface charges affects the polarization, leading to a strong reduction with respect to its bulk value. This reduction can be ascribed to two mechanisms: the coupling between compressive strain and the phase-transition order parameter; the changes in the ferroelectric distortion. We give two alternative explanations of this phenomenon: from an atomistic point of view, analyzing the evolution of the bond lengths, and from a symmetry-analysis point of view, considering the changes in the amplitude of the symmetry-allowed distortions, when a slab configuration is considered. These results are independent on the slab-thickness in the considered range, suggesting the absence of a critical thickness for ferroelectricity in HfO$_2$, in agreement with the proposed improper nature of hafnia ferroelectricity.

Machine Learning (ML) techniques are revolutionizing the way to perform efficient materials modeling. Nevertheless, not all the ML approaches allow for the understanding of microscopic mechanisms at play in different phenomena. To address the latter aspect, we propose a combinatorial machine-learning approach to obtain physical formulas based on simple and easily-accessible ingredients, such as atomic properties. The latter are used to build materials features that are finally employed, through Linear Regression, to predict the energetic stability of semiconducting binary compounds with respect to zincblende and rocksalt crystal structures. The adopted models are trained using dataset built from first-principles calculations. Our results show that already one-dimensional (1D) formulas well describe the energetics; a simple grid-search optimization of the automatically-obtained 1D-formulas enhances the prediction performances at a very small computational cost. In addition, our approach allows to highlight the role of the different atomic properties involved in the formulas. The computed formulas clearly indicate that "spatial" atomic properties (i.e. radii indicating maximum probability densities for $s,p,d$ electronic shells) drive the stabilization of one crystal structure with respect to the other, suggesting the major relevance of the radius associated to the $p$-shell of the cation species., Comment: 11 pages and 5 figures with extra supplementary material

We consider the propagation of temporally incoherent waves in multimode optical fibers (MMFs) in the framework of the multimode nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation accounting for the impact of the natural structural disorder that affects light propagation in standard MMFs (random mode coupling and polarization fluctuations). By averaging the dynamics over the fast disordered fluctuations, we derive a Manakov equation from the multimode NLS equation, which reveals that the Raman effect introduces a previously unrecognized nonlinear coupling among the modes. Applying the wave turbulence theory on the Manakov equation, we derive a very simple scalar kinetic equation describing the evolution of the multimode incoherent waves. The structure of the kinetic equation is analogous to that developed in plasma physics to describe weak Langmuir turbulence. The extreme simplicity of the derived kinetic equation provides physical insight into the multimode incoherent wave dynamics. It reveals the existence of different collective behaviors where all modes self-consistently form a multimode spectral incoherent soliton state. Such an incoherent soliton can exhibit a discrete behavior characterized by collective synchronized spectral oscillations in frequency space. The theory is validated by accurate numerical simulations: The simulations of the generalized multimode NLS equation are found in quantitative agreement with those of the derived scalar kinetic equation without using adjustable parameters., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

The variational quantum eigensolver (or VQE) uses the variational principle to compute the ground state energy of a Hamiltonian, a problem that is central to quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics. Conventional computing methods are constrained in their accuracy due to the computational limits. The VQE may be used to model complex wavefunctions in polynomial time, making it one of the most promising near-term applications for quantum computing. Finding a path to navigate the relevant literature has rapidly become an overwhelming task, with many methods promising to improve different parts of the algorithm. Despite strong theoretical underpinnings suggesting excellent scaling of individual VQE components, studies have pointed out that their various pre-factors could be too large to reach a quantum computing advantage over conventional methods. This review aims to provide an overview of the progress that has been made on the different parts of the algorithm. All the different components of the algorithm are reviewed in detail including representation of Hamiltonians and wavefunctions on a quantum computer, the optimization process, the post-processing mitigation of errors, and best practices are suggested. We identify four main areas of future research:(1) optimal measurement schemes for reduction of circuit repetitions; (2) large scale parallelization across many quantum computers;(3) ways to overcome the potential appearance of vanishing gradients in the optimization process, and how the number of iterations required for the optimization scales with system size; (4) the extent to which VQE suffers for quantum noise, and whether this noise can be mitigated. The answers to these open research questions will determine the routes for the VQE to achieve quantum advantage as the quantum computing hardware scales up and as the noise levels are reduced., Comment: 156 pages, 19 figures

Curved magnets attract considerable interest for their unusually rich phase diagram, often encompassing exotic (e.g., topological or chiral) spin states. Micromagnetic simulations are playing a central role in the theoretical understanding of such phenomena; their predictive power, however, rests on the availability of reliable model parameters to describe a given material or nanostructure. Here we demonstrate how non-collinear-spin polarized density-functional theory can be used to determine the flexomagnetic coupling coefficients in real systems. By focusing on monolayer CrI$_3$, we find a crossover as a function of curvature between a magnetization normal to the surface to a cycloidal state, which we rationalize in terms of effective anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contributions to the magnetic energy. Our results reveal an unexpectedly large impact of spin-orbit interactions on the curvature-induced anisotropy, which we discuss in the context of existing phenomenological models.

The long-term behavior of a modulationally unstable conservative nonintegrable system is known to be characterized by the soliton turbulence self-organization process. We consider this problem in the presence of a long-range interaction in the framework of the Schr\"odinger-Poisson (or Newton-Schr\"odinger) equation accounting for the gravitational interaction. By increasing the amount of nonlinearity, the system self-organizes into a large-scale incoherent localized structure that contains "hidden" coherent soliton states: The solitons can hardly be identified in the usual spatial or spectral domains, while their existence is unveiled in the phase-space representation (spectrogram). We develop a theoretical approach that provides the coupled description of the coherent soliton component (governed by an effective Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation) and of the incoherent component (governed by a wave turbulence Vlasov-Poisson equation). The theory shows that the incoherent structure introduces an effective trapping potential that stabilizes the hidden coherent soliton, a mechanism that we verify by direct numerical simulations. The theory characterizes the properties of the localized incoherent structure, such as its compactly supported spectral shape. It also clarifies the quantum-to-classical correspondence in the presence of gravitational interactions. This study is of potential interest for self-gravitating Boson models of fuzzy dark matter. Although we focus our paper on the Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation, we show that our results are general for long-range wave systems characterized by an algebraic decay of the interacting potential. This work should stimulate nonlinear optics experiments in highly nonlocal nonlinear (thermal) media that mimic the long-range nature of gravitational interactions., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

Multiferroic materials have garnered wide interest for their exceptional static and dynamical magnetoelectric properties. In particular, type-II multiferroics exhibit an inversion-symmetry-breaking magnetic order which directly induces a ferroelectric polarization through various mechanisms, such as the spin-current or the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effect. This intrinsic coupling between the magnetic and dipolar order parameters results in record-strength magnetoelectric effects. Two dimensional materials possessing such intrinsic multiferroic properties have been long sought for harnessing magnetoelectric coupling in nanoelectronic devices. Here, we report the discovery of type-II multiferroic order in a single atomic layer of the transition metal-based van der Waals material NiI2. The multiferroic state of NiI2 is characterized by a proper-screw spin helix with given handedness, which couples to the charge degrees of freedom to produce a chirality-controlled electrical polarization. We use circular dichroic Raman measurements to directly probe the magneto-chiral ground state and its electromagnon modes originating from dynamic magnetoelectric coupling. Using birefringence and second-harmonic generation measurements, we detect a highly anisotropic electronic state simultaneously breaking three-fold rotational and inversion symmetry, and supporting polar order. The evolution of the optical signatures as a function of temperature and layer number surprisingly reveals an ordered magnetic, polar state that persists down to the ultrathin limit of monolayer NiI2. These observations establish NiI2 and transition metal dihalides as a new platform for studying emergent multiferroic phenomena, chiral magnetic textures and ferroelectricity in the two-dimensional limit.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets provide an ideal platform for exploring, on the fundamental side, new microscopic mechanisms and for developing, on the technological side, ultra-compact spintronic applications. So far, bilinear spin Hamiltonians have been commonly adopted to investigate the magnetic properties of 2D magnets, neglecting higher order magnetic interactions. However, we here provide quantitative evidence of giant biquadratic exchange interactions in monolayer NiX2 (X=Cl, Br and I), by combining first-principles calculations and the newly developed machine learning method for constructing Hamiltonian. Interestingly, we show that the ferromagnetic ground state within NiCl2 single layers cannot be explained by means of bilinear Heisenberg Hamiltonian; rather, the nearest-neighbor biquadratic interaction is found to be crucial. Furthermore, using a three-orbitals Hubbard model, we propose that the giant biquadratic exchange interaction originates from large hopping between unoccupied and occupied orbitals on neighboring magnetic ions. On a general framework, our work suggests biquadratic exchange interactions to be important in 2D magnets with edge-shared octahedra., Comment: 3 figures

We consider the problem of the formation of soliton states from a modulationally unstable initial condition in the framework of the Schr\"odinger-Poisson (or Newton-Schr\"odinger) equation accounting for gravitational interactions. We unveil a previously unrecognized regime: By increasing the nonlinearity, the system self-organizes into an incoherent localized structure that contains "hidden" coherent soliton states. The solitons are "hidden" in the sense that they are fully immersed in random wave fluctuations: The radius of the soliton is much larger than the correlation radius of the incoherent fluctuations while its peak amplitude is of the same order of such fluctuations. Accordingly, the solitons can hardly be identified in the usual spatial or spectral domains, while their existence is clearly unveiled in the phase-space representation. Our multi-scale theory based on coupled coherent-incoherent wave turbulence formalisms reveals that the hidden solitons are stabilized and trapped by the incoherent localized structure. Furthermore, hidden binary soliton systems are identified numerically and described theoretically. The regime of hidden solitons is of potential interest for self-gravitating Boson models of "fuzzy" dark matter. It also sheds new light on the quantum-to-classical correspondence with gravitational interactions. The hidden solitons can be observed in nonlocal nonlinear optics experiments through the measurement of the spatial spectrogram.

The effects of competing magnetic interactions in stabilizing different spin configurations are drawing a renewed attention in order to both unveil emerging topological spin textures and to highlight microscopic mechanisms leading to their stabilization. The possible key role of the two-site exchange anisotropy in selecting specific helicity and vorticity of skyrmionic lattices has only recently been proposed. In this work we explore the phase diagram of a frustrated localized magnet on a two-dimensional centrosymmetric triangular lattice, focusing on the interplay between the two-ion anisotropy (TIA) and the single-ion anisotropy (SIA). The effects of an external magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the magnetic layer are also investigated. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we find a profusion of different spin configurations, going from trivial to high-order Q skyrmionic and meronic lattices. In closer detail, we find that a dominant role is played by the two-ion over the single-ion anisotropy in determining the planar spin texture, whereas the strength and sign of SIA, together with the magnitude of the magnetic field, tune the perpendicular spin components, mostly affecting the polarity (and, in turn, the topology) of the spin-texture. Our analysis confirms the crucial role of anisotropic symmetric exchange in systems with dominant short-range interactions, at the same time predicting a rich variety of complex magnetic textures that may arise from a fine tuning of competing anisotropic mechanisms.

Ferroelectricity in hafnia is often regarded as a breakthrough discovery in ferroelectrics, potentially able to revolutionize the whole field. Despite increasing interests, a comprehensive understanding of the many factors driving the ferroelectric stabilization is still lacking. We here address the phase transition in terms of a Landau-theory-based approach, by analyzing symmetry-allowed distortions connecting the high-symmetry paraelectric tetragonal phase to the low-symmetry polar orthorhombic phase. By means of first-principles simulations, we find that the $\Gamma_{3-}$ polar mode is only weakly unstable, whereas the other two symmetry-allowed distortions, non-polar Y$_{2+}$ and anti-polar Y$_{4-}$ are hard modes. None of the modes, taken alone or combined with one other mode, is able to drive the transition: the key factor in stabilizing the polar phase is identified as the strong trilinear coupling among the three modes. Furthermore, the experimentally acknowledged importance of substrate-induced effects in the growth of HfO$_2$ ferroelectric thin films, along with the lack of a clear order parameter in the transition, suggested the extension of our analysis to strain effects. Our findings suggest a complex behaviour of the Y$_{2+}$ mode, which become unstable under certain strain conditions and an overall unstable behaviour for the $\Gamma_{3-}$ polar mode for all the strain states. A robust result emerges from our analysis: independently of the different applied strain (compressive or tensile, applied along orthorhombic axes), the need of a simultaneous excitation of the three coupled modes remain unaltered. Finally, when applied to mimic experimental growth conditions under strain, our analysis show a further stabilization of the ferroelectric phase with respect to the unstrained case, in agreeement with experimental findings.

Since its birth in the 1990s, semiconductor spintronics has suffered from poor compatibility with ferromagnets as sources of spin. While the broken inversion symmetry of some semiconductors may alternatively allow for spin-charge interconversion, its control by electric fields is volatile. Ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors stand as appealing materials unifying semiconductivity, large spin-orbit coupling, and non-volatility endowed by ferroelectricity. However, their potential for spintronics has been little explored. Here, we demonstrate the non-volatile, ferroelectric control of spin-to-charge conversion at room temperature in epitaxial GeTe films. We show that ferroelectric switching by electrical gating is possible in GeTe despite its high carrier density. We reveal a spin-to-charge conversion as effective as in Pt, but whose sign is controlled by the orientation of the ferroelectric polarization. The comparison between theoretical and experimental data suggests that spin Hall effect plays a major role for switchable conversion. We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a two-dimensional paraxial fluid of light using a near-resonant laser propagating through a hot atomic vapor. We observe a double shock-collapse instability: a shock (gradient catastrophe) for the velocity, as well as an annular (ring-shaped) collapse singularity for the density. We find experimental evidence that this instability results from the combined effect of the nonlocal photon-photon interaction and the linear photon losses. The theoretical analysis based on the method of characteristics reveals the main counterintuitive result that dissipation (photon losses) is responsible for an unexpected enhancement of the collapse instability. Detailed analytical modeling makes it possible to evaluate the nonlocality range of the interaction. The nonlocality is controlled by adjusting the atomic vapor temperature and is seen to increase dramatically when the atomic density becomes much larger than one atom per cubic wavelength. Interestingly, such a large range of the nonlocal photon-photon interaction has not been observed in an atomic vapor so far and its microscopic origin is currently unknown., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The magnetic properties of two-dimensional VI3 bilayer are the focus of our first-principles analysis, highlighting the role of trigonal crystal-field effects and carried out in comparison with the CrI3 prototypical case, where the effects are absent. In VI3 bilayers, the empty a1g state - consistent with the observed trigonal distortion - is found to play a crucial role in both stabilizing the insulating state and in determining the inter-layer magnetic interaction. Indeed, an analysis based on maximally localized Wannier functions allows to evaluate the interlayer exchange interactions in two different VI3 stackings (labelled AB and AB'), to interpret the results in terms of virtual-hopping mechanism, and to highlight the strongest hopping channels underlying the magnetic interlayer coupling. Upon application of electric fields perpendicular to the slab, we find that the magnetic ground-state in the AB' stacking can be switched from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, suggesting VI3 bilayer as an appealing candidate for electric-field-driven miniaturized spintronic devices., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted for publication

The wave turbulence theory predicts that a conservative system of nonlinear waves can exhibit a process of condensation, which originates in the singularity of the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution of classical waves. Considering light propagation in a multimode fiber, we show that light condensation is driven by an energy flow toward the higher-order modes, and a bi-directional redistribution of the wave-action (or power) to the fundamental mode and to higher-order modes. The analysis of the near-field intensity distribution provides experimental evidence of this mechanism. The kinetic equation also shows that the wave-action and energy flows can be inverted through a thermalization toward a negative temperature equilibrium state, in which the high-order modes are more populated than low-order modes. Classical nonlinear waves exhibit a phenomenon of condensation that results from the natural irreversible process of thermalization, in analogy with the quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. Wave condensation originates in the divergence of the thermodynamic equilibrium Rayleigh-Jeans distribution, which is responsible for the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the system. However, achieving complete thermalization and condensation of incoherent waves through nonlinear optical propagation is known to require prohibitive large interaction lengths. Here, we derive a discrete kinetic equation describing the nonequilibrium evolution of the random wave in the presence of a structural disorder of the medium. Our theory reveals that a weak disorder accelerates the rate of thermalization and condensation by several order of magnitudes. Such a counterintuitive dramatic acceleration of condensation can provide a natural explanation for the recently discovered phenomenon of optical beam self-cleaning. Our experiments in multimode optical fibers report the observation of the transition from an incoherent thermal distribution to wave condensation, with a condensate fraction of up to 60% in the fundamental mode of the waveguide trapping potential., Comment: 3 figures

Classical nonlinear random waves can exhibit a process of condensation. It originates in the singularity of the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution and it is characterized by the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the system. Several recent experiments revealed a phenomenon of spatial beam cleaning of an optical field that propagates through a graded-index multimode optical fiber (MMF). Our aim in this article is to provide physical insight into the mechanism underlying optical beam self-cleaning through the analysis of wave condensation in the presence of structural disorder inherent to MMFs. We consider experiments of beam cleaning where long pulses are injected in the and populate many modes of a 10-20 m MMF, for which the dominant contribution of disorder originates from polarization random fluctuations (weak disorder). On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we derive nonequilibrium kinetic equations describing the random waves in a regime where disorder dominates nonlinear effects. The theory reveals that the presence of a conservative weak disorder introduces an effective dissipation in the system, which is shown to inhibit wave condensation in the usual continuous wave turbulence approach. On the other hand, the experiments of beam cleaning are described by a discrete wave turbulence approach, where the effective dissipation induced by disorder modifies the regularization of wave resonances, which leads to an acceleration of condensation that can explain the effect of beam self-cleaning. The simulations are in quantitative agreement with the theory. The analysis also reveals that the effect of beam cleaning is characterized by a repolarization as a natural consequence of the condensation process. Next-generation spintronic devices will benefit from low-dimensionality, ferromagnetism, and half-metallicity, possibly controlled by electric fields. We find these technologically-appealing features to be combined with an exotic microscopic origin of magnetism in doped CdOHCl, a van der Waals material from which 2D layers may be exfoliated. By means of first principles simulations, we predict homogeneous hole-doping to give rise to $p$-band magnetism in both the bulk and monolayer phases and interpret our findings in terms of Stoner instability: as the Fermi level is tuned via hole-doping through singularities in the 2D-like density of states, ferromagnetism develops with large saturation magnetization of 1 $\mu_B$ per hole, leading to a half-metallic behaviour for layer carrier densities of the order of 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$. Furthermore, we put forward electrostatic doping as an additional handle to induce magnetism in monolayers and bilayers of CdOHCl. Upon application of critical electric fields perpendicular to atomically-thin-films (as low as 0.2 V/$A{\deg}$ and 0.5 V/$A{\deg}$ in the bilayer and monolayer case, respectively), we envisage the emergence of a magnetic half-metallic state. The different behaviour of monolayer vs bilayer systems, as well as an observed asymmetric response to positive and negative electric fields in bilayers, are interpreted in terms of intrinsic polarity of CdOHCl atomic stacks, a distinctive feature of the material. In perspective, given the experimentally accessible magnitude of critical fields in bilayer of CdOHCl, one can envisage $p$ band magnetism to be exploited in miniaturized spintronic devices.

Theoretical studies on wave turbulence predict that a purely classical system of random waves can exhibit a process of condensation, in analogy with the quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. We report the experimental observation of the transition to condensation of classical optical waves propagating in a multimode fiber, i.e., in a conservative Hamiltonian system without thermal heat bath. In contrast to conventional self-organization processes featured by the non-equilibrium formation of nonlinear coherent structures (solitons, vortices...), here the self-organization originates in the equilibrium Rayleigh-Jeans statistics of classical waves. The experimental results show that the chemical potential reaches the lowest energy level at the transition to condensation, which leads to the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the optical fiber. The near-field and far-field measurements of the condensate fraction across the transition to condensation are in quantitative agreement with the Rayleigh-Jeans theory. The thermodynamics of classical wave condensation reveals that, in opposition to quantum Bose-Einstein condensation, the heat capacity takes a constant value in the condensed state and tends to vanish above the transition in the normal state. Magnetoelectric effect is a fundamental physics phenomenon that synergizes electric and magnetic degrees of freedom to generate distinct material responses like electrically tuned magnetism, which serves as a key foundation of the emerging field of spintronics. Here, we show by first-principles studies that ferroelectric (FE) polarization of an In2Se3 monolayer can modulate the magnetism of an adjacent transition-metal (TM) decorated graphene layer via an FE induced electronic transition. The TM nonbonding d-orbital shifts downward and hybridizes with carbon p states near the Fermi level, suppressing the magnetic moment, under one FE polarization, but on reversed FE polarization this TM d-orbital moves upward, restoring the original magnetic moment. This finding of robust magnetoelectric effect in TM decorated graphene/In2Se3 heterostructure offers powerful insights and a promising avenue for experimental exploration of FE controlled magnetism in 2D materials.

Topological spin structures, such as magnetic skyrmions, hold great promises for data storage applications, thanks to their inherent stability. In most cases, skyrmions are stabilized by magnetic fields in non-centrosymmetric systems displaying the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, while spontaneous skyrmion lattices have been reported in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets with long-range interactions. Here, a spontaneous anti-biskyrmion lattice with unique topology and chirality is predicted in the monolayer of a semiconducting and centrosymmetric metal halide, NiI$_2$. Our first-principles and Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the anisotropies of the short-range symmetric exchange, when combined with magnetic frustration, can lead to an emergent chiral interaction that is responsible for the predicted topological spin structures. The proposed mechanism finds a prototypical manifestation in two-dimensional magnets, thus broadening the class of materials that can host spontaneous skyrmionic states., Comment: submitted
