Abstract

Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Abstract

This paper reports on 3D-printed dielectric image lines for low-loss subTHz applications between 140 and 220 GHz. In contrast to conventional dielectric waveguides, a conductive copper substrate is used to achieve robust routing and increased mechanical stability. For easy integration and characterization of the dielectric image line within a waveguide measurement setup, a low-loss mode-converter for flexible mounting is further designed. The characterized overall system exhibits a broadband match of at least 20 dB over the entire frequency band, with minimal losses of below 0.35 dB/cm. Furthermore, multi-line characterization is performed for de-embedding the propagation parameters {\alpha} and \b{eta} of both the dielectric transmission line and the mode-converter, and finally, the influence of discontinuities such as bending radii on the transmission behavior is evaluated. Due to the simplicity of the underlying 3D-printing technology, the proposed concept features extremely low cost and complexity, yet offers high flexibility and outperforms the losses of conventional transmission lines.

3. Taming numerical imprecision by adapting the KL divergence to negative probabilities

Abstract

The Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence is frequently used in data science. For discrete distributions on large state spaces, approximations of probability vectors may result in a few small negative entries, rendering the KL divergence undefined. We address this problem by introducing a parameterized family of substitute divergence measures, the shifted KL (sKL) divergence measures. Our approach is generic and does not increase the computational overhead. We show that the sKL divergence shares important theoretical properties with the KL divergence and discuss how its shift parameters should be chosen. If Gaussian noise is added to a probability vector, we prove that the average sKL divergence converges to the KL divergence for small enough noise. 5. Exposing Bias in Online Communities through Large-Scale Language Models

Abstract

Progress in natural language generation research has been shaped by the ever-growing size of language models. While large language models pre-trained on web data can generate human-sounding text, they also reproduce social biases and contribute to the propagation of harmful stereotypes. This work utilises the flaw of bias in language models to explore the biases of six different online communities. In order to get an insight into the communities' viewpoints, we fine-tune GPT-Neo 1.3B with six social media datasets. The bias of the resulting models is evaluated by prompting the models with different demographics and comparing the sentiment and toxicity values of these generations. Together, these methods reveal that bias differs in type and intensity for the various models. This work not only affirms how easily bias is absorbed from training data but also presents a scalable method to identify and compare the bias of different datasets or communities. Additionally, the examples generated for this work demonstrate the limitations of using automated sentiment and toxicity classifiers in bias research.

7. Self-Supervised Pretraining of Graph Neural Network for the Retrieval of Related Mathematical Expressions in Scientific Articles

Abstract

Given the increase of publications, search for relevant papers becomes tedious. In particular, search across disciplines or schools of thinking is not supported. This is mainly due to the retrieval with keyword queries: technical terms differ in different sciences or at different times. Relevant articles might better be identified by their mathematical problem descriptions. Just looking at the equations in a paper already gives a hint to whether the paper is relevant. Hence, we propose a new approach for retrieval of mathematical expressions based on machine learning. We design an unsupervised representation learning task that combines embedding learning with self-supervised learning. Using graph convolutional neural networks we embed mathematical expression into low-dimensional vector spaces that allow efficient nearest neighbor queries. To train our models, we collect a huge dataset with over 29 million mathematical expressions from over 900,000 publications published on arXiv.org. The math is converted into an XML format, which we view as graph data. Our empirical evaluations involving a new dataset of manually annotated search queries show the benefits of using embedding models for mathematical retrieval. 8. D-Vine-Based Correction of Physics-Based Model Output for the Identification of Risky Flights With Respect to Runway Overruns

Abstract

Flight dynamic-based physical models are employed to assess the risk of runway overruns, predicting risk based on the metric given by the distance to a controllable speed of 80 knots after landing. The analysis incorporates Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data from 711 flights. Despite using observed flight data from flights without accidents as inputs, the physical model’s risk predictions frequently exceed the observed risk metric, showing that the predicted risk metrics of the physical model are biased. To address this discrepancy, statistical models are designed to adjust the physical model’s predictions by incorporating an additive error correction. Two correction approaches are evaluated: linear regression and D-vine copula regression. Linear regression fails to account for tail asymmetry, whereas D-vine copula regression does. Findings indicate that both correction methods enhance the physical model’s accuracy relative to the observed risk metric, with D-vine copula regression achieving a closer match. To further refine the prediction of the risk metric, particularly in the tail of the distribution, numerous predictions are simulated using dependent input values generated using fitted R-vine copula models of the QAR data. Integrating these simulated dependent inputs and error corrections, the authors achieve a more accurate representation of the observed risk metric distribution and tail probabilities. This improvement is confirmed by comparing the Hellinger pairwise distances between the predicted and observed risk metric densities within the 2500 to 3000-meter range, where the D-vine copula regression error model with dependent inputs shows the smallest discrepancy. The results underscore the importance of considering asymmetric dependencies among input values to enhance the precision of runway overrun risk assessments.

Abstract

This paper presents an ultra-broadband, low-loss, flexible liquid crystal polymer substrate-to-substrate interconnect with a bandwidth of more than 130 GHz. The transition discontinuity was minimized by maintaining both the reference impedance and the electromagnetic field conformity across the transition from alumina substrate to flip-chip foil. Therefore, more than 600 $\mu$m long flexible flip-chip interconnects can be realized for bridging millimeter-wave sub-modules and enabling ultra-broadband heterogeneous system design with a measured return loss of above 20 dB. Furthermore, the interconnect can realize ramp interconnections between monolithic microwave integrated circuits or substrates with different substrate heights due to the flexible foil substrate. Minimum parasitic radiation at the transition is realized through a closely spaced signal-to-ground connection. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed interconnect against lateral misalignment in the assembly is presented through simulation and measurement. An outstanding insertion loss of less than 0.3 dB per transition over a bandwidth of more than 130 GHz is shown.

11. Explaining Deep Learning Representations by Tracing the Training Process

Abstract

We propose a novel explanation method that explains the decisions of a deep neural network by investigating how the intermediate representations at each layer of the deep network were refined during the training process. This way we can a) find the most influential training examples during training and b) analyze which classes attributed most to the final representation. Our method is general: it can be wrapped around any iterative optimization procedure and covers a variety of neural network architectures, including feed-forward networks and convolutional neural networks. We first propose a method for stochastic training with single training instances, but continue to also derive a variant for the common mini-batch training. In experimental evaluations, we show that our method identifies highly representative training instances that can be used as an explanation. Additionally, we propose a visualization that provides explanations in the form of aggregated statistics over the whole training process.

13. Noisy Labels for Weakly Supervised Gamma Hadron Classification

Abstract

Gamma hadron classification, a central machine learning task in gamma ray astronomy, is conventionally tackled with supervised learning. However, the supervised approach requires annotated training data to be produced in sophisticated and costly simulations. We propose to instead solve gamma hadron classification with a noisy label approach that only uses unlabeled data recorded by the real telescope. To this end, we employ the significance of detection as a learning criterion which addresses this form of weak supervision. We show that models which are based on the significance of detection deliver state-of-the-art results, despite being exclusively trained with noisy labels; put differently, our models do not require the costly simulated ground-truth labels that astronomers otherwise employ for classifier training. Our weakly supervised models exhibit competitive performances also on imbalanced data sets that stem from a variety of other application domains. In contrast to existing work on class-conditional label noise, we assume that only one of the class-wise noise rates is known.

14. Bit Error Tolerance Metrics for Binarized Neural Networks

Abstract

To reduce the resource demand of neural network (NN) inference systems, it has been proposed to use approximate memory, in which the supply voltage and the timing parameters are tuned trading accuracy with energy consumption and performance. Tuning these parameters aggressively leads to bit errors, which can be tolerated by NNs when bit flips are injected during training. However, bit flip training, which is the state of the art for achieving bit error tolerance, does not scale well; it leads to massive overheads and cannot be applied for high bit error rates (BERs). Alternative methods to achieve bit error tolerance in NNs are needed, but the underlying principles behind the bit error tolerance of NNs have not been reported yet. With this lack of understanding, further progress in the research on NN bit error tolerance will be restrained. In this study, our objective is to investigate the internal changes in the NNs that bit flip training causes, with a focus on binarized NNs (BNNs). To this end, we quantify the properties of bit error tolerant BNNs with two metrics. First, we propose a neuron-level bit error tolerance metric, which calculates the margin between the pre-activation values and batch normalization thresholds. Secondly, to capture the effects of bit error tolerance on the interplay of neurons, we propose an inter-neuron bit error tolerance metric, which measures the importance of each neuron and computes the variance over all importance values. A common explanation for their excellent performance is due to the bias-variance decomposition of the mean squared error which shows that the algorithm's error can be decomposed into its bias and variance. Both quantities are often opposed to each other and ensembles offer an effective way to manage them as they reduce the variance through a diverse set of base learners while keeping the bias low at the same time. Even though there have been numerous works on decomposing other loss functions, the exact mathematical connection is rarely exploited explicitly for ensembling, but merely used as a guiding principle. In this paper, we formulate a generalized bias-variance decomposition for arbitrary twice differentiable loss functions and study it in the context of Deep Learning. We use this decomposition to derive a Generalized Negative Correlation Learning (GNCL) algorithm which offers explicit control over the ensemble's diversity and smoothly interpolates between the two extremes of independent training and the joint training of the ensemble. We show how GNCL encapsulates many previous works and discuss under which circumstances training of an ensemble of Neural Networks might fail and what ensembling method should be favored depending on the choice of the individual networks. Abstract

Data summarization has become a valuable tool in understanding even terabytes of data. Due to their compelling theoretical properties, submodular functions have been in the focus of summarization algorithms. These algorithms offer worst-case approximations guarantees to the expense of higher computation and memory requirements. However, many practical applications do not fall under this worst-case, but are usually much more well-behaved. In this paper, we propose a new submodular function maximization algorithm called ThreeSieves, which ignores the worst-case, but delivers a good solution in high probability. It selects the most informative items from a data-stream on the fly and maintains a provable performance on a fixed memory budget. In an extensive evaluation, we compare our method against $6$ other methods on $8$ different datasets with and without concept drift. We show that our algorithm outperforms current state-of-the-art algorithms and, at the same time, uses fewer resources. Last, we highlight a real-world use-case of our algorithm for data summarization in gamma-ray astronomy. Abstract

Non-volatile memory, such as resistive RAM (RRAM), is an emerging energy-efficient storage, especially for low-power machine learning models on the edge. It is reported, however, that the bit error rate of RRAMs can be up to 3.3% in the ultra low-power setting, which might be crucial for many use cases. Binary neural networks (BNNs), a resource efficient variant of neural networks (NNs), can tolerate a certain percentage of errors without a loss in accuracy and demand lower resources in computation and storage. The bit error tolerance (BET) in BNNs can be achieved by flipping the weight signs during training, as proposed by Hirtzlin et al., but their method has a significant drawback, especially for fully connected neural networks (FCNN): The FCNNs overfit to the error rate used in training, which leads to low accuracy under lower error rates. In addition, the underlying principles of BET are not investigated. In this work, we improve the training for BET of BNNs and aim to explain this property. We propose straight-through gradient approximation to improve the weight-sign-flip training, by which BNNs adapt less to the bit error rates. To explain the achieved robustness, we define a metric that aims to measure BET without fault injection. We evaluate the metric and find that it correlates with accuracy over error rate for all FCNNs tested. Finally, we explore the influence of a novel regularizer that optimizes with respect to this metric, with the aim of providing a configurable trade-off in accuracy and BET., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Abstract Mutations in glucocerebrosidase cause the lysosomal storage disorder Gaucher’s disease and are the most common risk factor for Parkinson’s disease. Therapies to restore the enzyme’s function in the brain hold great promise for treating the neurological implications. Thus, we developed blood-brain barrier penetrant therapeutic molecules by fusing transferrin receptor-binding moieties to β-glucocerebrosidase (referred to as GCase-BS). We demonstrate that these fusion proteins show significantly increased uptake and lysosomal efficiency compared to the enzyme alone. In a cellular disease model, GCase-BS rapidly rescues the lysosomal proteome and lipid accumulations beyond known substrates. In a mouse disease model, intravenous injection of GCase-BS leads to a sustained reduction of glucosylsphingosine and can lower neurofilament-light chain plasma levels. Collectively, these findings demonstrate the potential of GCase-BS for treating GBA1-associated lysosomal dysfunction, provide insight into candidate biomarkers, and may ultimately open a promising treatment paradigm for lysosomal storage diseases extending beyond the central nervous system.

Abstract

AIM: To examine the efficacy and safety of micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) versus selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in a large cohort of primarily African American and Hispanic patients. METHODS: A single center retrospective comparative cohort review conducted at Cook County Health facilities that included patients with a diagnosis of open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who received an SLT or MLT procedure between January 2017 and May 2021. RESULTS: Totally 131 eyes of 99 patients were analyzed. The 77 eyes received SLT and 54 received MLT. Seven out of 77 eyes in the SLT group (9.1%) and 1 out of 54 eyes in the MLT group (1.9%) had an IOP spike (defined as > 5 mm Hg) at either 1h or 1wk after procedure (P=0.05, Chi-squared test with Haldane-Anscombe correction). The procedure failure rate at one year was 50% for SLT and 48% for MLT (P=0.31). CONCLUSION: MLT has a significantly lower incidence of pressure spikes and a similar treatment failure rate at 1-year post-procedure, demonstrating that it is a reasonable alternative compared to SLT.

Abstract

The dataset presented in this paper consists of sentiment information extracted from image and text data of financial subreddit posts. Members of these subreddits post about their trading behavior, express their opinions, and discuss capital market trends. Their posts contain sentiment information on financial topics as well as signaling information on trading decisions. Frequently, members post screenshots of their portfolios from their mobile broker apps. We collected the posts, processed them to extract sentiment scores using various methods, and anonymized them. The dataset consists therefore not of any content from the posts or information about the author, but the processed sentiment information within the post. Further financial tickers mentioned in the posts are tracked, such that the effect of sentiment in the posts can be attributed to financial products and used in the context of financial forecasting.The posts were collected using the Reddit [2] and Pushshift APIs [3] and processed using an Amazon Web Services architecture. A fine-tuned MobileNets artificial neural network [4] was used to classify images into four distinct categories, which had been determined in a preliminary analysis. The categories included classical memes, number posts (e.g. screenshots of mobile broker portfolios), text posts (e.g. screenshots from twitter) and chart posts (e.g. other financial screenshots, such as charts). The reason for the classification of images into the four categories is that the images are so inherently different, that different extraction methods had to be applied for each category. OCR – methods [5] were used to extract text from images. Custom methods were applied to extract sentiment and other information from the resulting text. The data [1] is available on a 20-minute basis and can be used in many areas, such as financial forecasting and analyzing sentiment dynamics in social media posts.

Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ by detecting reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44$\%$ $\pm$ 12$\%$ (sys.) $\pm$ 5$\%$ (stat.) and $3.68$ns $\pm$ 0.17ns (sys.) $\pm$ 0.15ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050 m from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the $\bar\nu_{e}$ signal has increased. The value of $\theta_{13}$ is measured to be $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090 ^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor $\bar\nu_{e}$ prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of $\theta_{13}$ is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the $\theta_{13}$ measurement despite the observed distortion., Comment: 44 pages, 25 figures. Abstract

We describe a muon track reconstruction algorithm for the reactor anti-neutrino experiment Double Chooz. The Double Chooz detector consists of two optically isolated volumes of liquid scintillator viewed by PMTs, and an Outer Veto above these made of crossed scintillator strips. Muons are reconstructed by their Outer Veto hit positions along with timing information from the other two detector volumes. All muons are fit under the hypothesis that they are through-going and ultrarelativistic. If the energy depositions suggest that the muon may have stopped, the reconstruction fits also for this hypothesis and chooses between the two via the relative goodness-of-fit. In the ideal case of a through-going muon intersecting the center of the detector, the resolution is ~40 mm in each transverse dimension. Abstract

The oscillation results published by the Double Chooz collaboration in 2011 and 2012 rely on background models substantiated by reactor-on data. In this analysis, we present a background-model-independent measurement of the mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ by including 7.53 days of reactor-off data. A global fit of the observed neutrino rates for different reactor power conditions is performed, yielding a measurement of both $\theta_{13}$ and the total background rate. The results on the mixing angle are improved significantly by including the reactor-off data in the fit, as it provides a direct measurement of the total background rate. This reactor rate modulation analysis considers antineutrino candidates with neutron captures on both Gd and H, whose combination yields $\sin^2(2\theta_{13})=$ 0.102 $\pm$ 0.028(stat.) $\pm$ 0.033(syst.). The results presented in this study are fully consistent with the ones already published by Double Chooz, achieving a competitive precision. They provide, for the first time, a determination of $\theta_{13}$ that does not depend on a background model.

30. Spleen and Liver Stiffness Evaluation by ARFI Imaging: A Reliable Tool for a Short-Term Monitoring of Portal Hypertension?

Abstract

Background. Assessment of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the most reliable, though invasive method for evaluation of portal hypertension. Non-invasive, elastography-based techniques are well established in diagnosis, but not in monitoring of portal hypertension. The aim of our prospective study was to determine the value of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography technique of the liver and spleen in diagnosis and monitoring of portal hypertension. Methods. We prospectively assessed portal hypertension by HVPG and corresponding elastography of the liver and spleen in 31 patients with liver cirrhosis and an indication for primary prophylaxis by non-cardio selective beta-blockers. Investigations were performed at baseline and a follow-up visit after 6-8 weeks. To address the known large variability of values for spleen elastography, well-defined corresponding areas in the spleen were used for baseline and follow-up elastography. Sensitivity, specificity, and AUC-ROC values for both spleen and liver elastography monitoring of portal hypertension were calculated. Results. Liver but not spleen elastography significantly correlated with HVPG results and was suitable for initial evaluation of portal hypertension. However, changes in HVPG results did not show any correlation with alterations of ARFI values from baseline to follow-up visits both for liver and spleen elastography. Spleen stiffness results were not homogeneous across the whole organ differing significantly between the upper, hilar, and bottom placed investigation areas. Conclusions. In this prospective study ARFI-based assessment of liver elastography showed itself suitable for initial assessment but not for monitoring of portal hypertension. Spleen elastography was not appropriate for both, evaluation and monitoring of portal hypertension. A possible explanation for this new data that are in some contrast to previously published results is the degree of portal hypertension in our study, a comparatively short follow-up period, and well-defined investigation areas for spleen elastography in repetitive ARFI investigations. Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment has determined the value of the neutrino oscillation parameter $\theta_{13}$ from an analysis of inverse beta decay interactions with neutron capture on hydrogen. This analysis uses a three times larger fiducial volume than the standard Double Chooz assessment, which is restricted to a region doped with gadolinium (Gd), yielding an exposure of 113.1 GW-ton-years. The data sample used in this analysis is distinct from that of the Gd analysis, and the systematic uncertainties are also largely independent, with some exceptions, such as the reactor neutrino flux prediction. A combined rate- and energy-dependent fit finds $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0.097\pm 0.034(stat.) \pm 0.034 (syst.)$, excluding the no-oscillation hypothesis at 2.0 \sigma. Abstract

Double Chooz is unique among modern reactor-based neutrino experiments studying $\bar \nu_e$ disappearance in that data can be collected with all reactors off. In this paper, we present data from 7.53 days of reactor-off running. Applying the same selection criteria as used in the Double Chooz reactor-on oscillation analysis, a measured background rate of 1.0$\pm$0.4 events/day is obtained. The background model for accidentals, cosmogenic $\beta$-$n$-emitting isotopes, fast neutrons from cosmic muons, and stopped-$\mu$ decays used in the oscillation analysis is demonstrated to be correct within the uncertainties. Kinematic distributions of the events, which are dominantly cosmic-ray-produced correlated-background events, are provided. Abstract

We present a search for Lorentz violation with 8249 candidate electron antineutrino events taken by the Double Chooz experiment in 227.9 live days of running. This analysis, featuring a search for a sidereal time dependence of the events, is the first test of Lorentz invariance using a reactor-based antineutrino source. No sidereal variation is present in the data and the disappearance results are consistent with sidereal time independent oscillations. Under the Standard-Model Extension (SME), we set the first limits on fourteen Lorentz violating coefficients associated with transitions between electron and tau flavor, and set two competitive limits associated with transitions between electron and muon flavor., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; (new version after referee's comments)

Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment has observed 8,249 candidate electron antineutrino events in 227.93 live days with 33.71 GW-ton-years (reactor power x detector mass x livetime) exposure using a 10.3 cubic meter fiducial volume detector located at 1050 m from the reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power plant in France. The expectation in case of theta13 = 0 is 8,937 events. The deficit is interpreted as evidence of electron antineutrino disappearance. From a rate plus spectral shape analysis we find sin^2 2{\theta}13 = 0.109 \pm 0.030(stat) \pm 0.025(syst). Abstract

The Double Chooz Experiment presents an indication of reactor electron antineutrino disappearance consistent with neutrino oscillations. A ratio of 0.944 $\pm$ 0.016 (stat) $\pm$ 0.040 (syst) observed to predicted events was obtained in 101 days of running at the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant in France, with two 4.25 GW$_{th}$ reactors. The results were obtained from a single 10 m$^3$ fiducial volume detector located 1050 m from the two reactor cores. The reactor antineutrino flux prediction used the Bugey4 measurement as an anchor point. The deficit can be interpreted as an indication of a non-zero value of the still unmeasured neutrino mixing parameter \sang. Analyzing both the rate of the prompt positrons and their energy spectrum we find \sang = 0.086 $\pm$ 0.041 (stat) $\pm$ 0.030 (syst), or, at 90% CL, 0.015 $<$ \sang $\ <$ 0.16., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, (new version after PRL referee's comments)

Abstract

Abstract Objective For patients with cystic fibrosis, the imaging of the pancreas is of crucial importance for the early detection of pancreatic carcinoma. Comparative studies between Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and sonographic pancreas sonography are not yet available. The aim of the study was to compare MRI, sonography and point-shearwave elastography (pSWE). A total of 19 patients were included (10 male, 9 female; age 29.7 ± 14.3 years) in the study. Ultrasonography with pSWE and contrast enhanced MRI with MRCP were performed. Results Significant differences between measurements of pancreatic body were registered in MRI with 1.4 ± 0.6 cm vs 1.0 ± 0.4 cm in ultrasound (p = 0.049), however not for pancreatic head and tail. In 10/19 patients (52.6%) pancreatic parenchyma did not show in MRI because of complete lipomatous transformation, but could be detected in ultrasound. pSWE-values showed no significant differences between the full and partial fatty transformation in pancreatic head (p = 0.968), body (p = 0.657) and tail (p = 0.840). pSWE-values did not correlate with measured signal intensity in T1w flash (p = 0.930, r = 0.025) and T2w HASTE sequences (p = 0.152, r = − 0.375). In patients with CF ultrasound is superior to MRI for displaying full fibro-fatty parenchymal transformation, pancreatic duct. Ultrasound elastography did not provide additional clinical relevant information.

Abstract

We present the spectra of 36 Supernovae (SNe) of various types, obtained by the European Supernova Collaboration. Because of the spectral classification and the phase determination at their discovery the SNe did not warrant further study, and the spectra we present are the only available for the respective objects. In this paper we present and discuss this material using a new software for the automated classification of SNe spectra. As a validation of the software, we verify the classification and phase estimate reported for these objects in their discovery / classification circulars. For the comparison, the software uses the library of template spectra of Padova-Asiago Supernova Archive (ASA). For each spectrum of our sample we present a brief, individual discussion, highlighting the main characteristics and possible peculiarities. The comparison with ASA spectra confirms the previous classification of all objects and refines the age estimates. For our software we determine numerical limits of "safe" spectral classification and the uncertainties of the phase determination., Comment: 22 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Background. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is associated with systemic microvascular dysfunction including hemorrhages and other abnormalities of the nailfold capillary bed. This study aimed to verify the specificity of nailfold capillary hemorrhages and other abnormalities as risk factors for POAG. Methods. Nailfold video capillaroscopy was performed using a JH-1004 capillaroscope on the fourth and fifth digits of the nondominant hand in control (n = 277), POAG (n = 206), OHT (n = 57), and SG (n = 29) subjects. The number of hemorrhages, dilated capillaries >50 µm, and avascular zones ≥200 µm were counted and adjusted to counts per 100 capillaries. Descriptive analyses as well as univariate- and multivariable-adjusted logistic regression were performed comparing all groups with controls and POAG with OHT and SG. Subanalyses were conducted in POAG patients examining the association between nailfold capillary outcomes and previous glaucoma surgery, successful IOP control, or disease severity. Results. All nailfold capillary outcomes were significantly increased in POAG, no outcomes were increased in SG, and only hemorrhages were mildly increased in OHT. Abstract Background Changing the phosphorus (P) nutrition leads to changes in plant metabolism. The aim of this study was to investigate how these changes are reflected in the distribution of 33P and the isotopic composition of oxygen associated to P (δ18OP) in different plant parts of soybean (Glycine max cv. Toliman). Two P pools were extracted sequentially with 0.3 M trichloroacetic acid (TCA P) and 10 M nitric acid (HNO3; residual P). Results The δ18OP of TCA P in the old leaves of the − P plants (23.8‰) significantly decreased compared to the + P plants (27.4‰). The 33P data point to an enhanced mobilisation of P from residual P in the old leaves of the − P plants compared to the + P plants. Conclusions Omitting P for 10 days lead to a translocation of P from source to sink organs in soybeans. This was accompanied by a significant lowering of the δ18OP of TCA P in the source organs due to the enzymatic hydrolysis of organic P. Combining 33P and δ18OP can provide useful insights in plant responses to P omission at an early stage.

Abstract

Potato is considered to have a low phosphorus (P) efficiency compared to other crops. Therefore, P fertilization requirements are high. New cultivars with improved P efficiency may contribute to save limited mineral P sources and to reduce eutrophication of surface water bodies. The present study aims to characterize the P efficiency of different potato genotypes and to identify mechanisms that improve P efficiency in cultivated potato. A diversity set of 32 potato accessions was used to assess their P efficiency. From this set, five cultivars were selected and two pot experiments with different P-fertilization strategies including a non-fertilized control were conducted to estimate effects of P deficiency on general agronomic and P related traits, root development, phosphatase activity and micro RNA 399 (miR399) expression. Significant differences between the 32 genotypes were found for P utilization efficiency (PUtE). P acquisition efficiency (PAE) as P content in low P in relation to P content in high P was positively correlated to relative biomass production while PUtE was not. Selected genotypes displayed a strong relation between total root length and P content. Root phosphatase activity and miR399 expression increased under P deficiency. However, tuber yields of four cultivars, grown on a soil with suboptimal content of plant available P, were not significantly affected in comparison to yields of well-fertilized plots. We conclude from the present study that PUtE and PAE are important traits when selecting for plants requiring less fertilizer inputs but PAE might be more important for cropping on deficient soils. A large root system might be the most important trait for P acquisition on such soils and therefore in breeding for P efficient crops. Lowering P fertilizer inputs might not necessarily reduce tuber yields.

Die Knochengesundheit bei Tumorpatienten spielt in der onkologischen Versorgung eine elementare Rolle. Knochenmetastasen gehören zu den häufigsten Metastasen und bedingen klinische Probleme wie Schmerzen, pathologische Frakturen und tumorinduzierte Hyperkalzämie (TIH). Wichtig ist zudem die therapiebedingte Osteoporose aufgrund der mit ihr einhergehenden Morbidität und Mortalität. Medikamentös kommen Antiresorptiva in unterschiedlicher Dosierung zum Einsatz. Bei frakturgefährdeten Knochen oder bereits eingetretener Fraktur kommen Strahlentherapie und Operation zur Anwendung. Die Komplexität der Knochengesundheit bei Tumorpatienten erfordert eine enge interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit zwischen Onkologen, Radiologen, Strahlentherapeuten, Chirurgen, Endokrinologen, Gynäkologen und anderen Spezialisten.

46. Broadband Low-Loss Fan-In Chip-to-Package Interconnect Enabling System-in-Package Applications Beyond 220 GHz

Abstract

This article presents a broadband low-loss fan-in wafer-level ball (WLB) grid array vertical through-mold-via (TMV) interconnect that enables highly integrated system-in-package (SiP) applications beyond 220 GHz. The dedicate advantage of the proposed approach is to further minimize the separation between package components [e.g., antenna in package (AiP)] and ON-chip receiver or transmitter chain. To demonstrate the robustness of the TMV interconnect design, the necessity for cosimulation of the integrated circuit (IC) package and the IC itself during the package design is shown. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the suppression of parasitic mode oscillation inside silicon is carried out. Furthermore, the parasitic radiation loss at the TMV interconnect discontinuity is given, and a verification of the proposed TMV due to high agreement of simulation and measurement results is demonstrated. The interconnect has been verified with a measured 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 38 GHz and a de-embedded insertion loss of less than 2.8 dB at 275 GHz, which enables a compact low-loss broadband signal transition from active IC components in the backend-of-line (BEOL) to passive components in package. Compared to fan-out WLB, the developed fan-in WLB solution enables higher integration density of active and passive components with the shortest interconnects for minimal insertion loss. Thus, the proposed fan-in TMV packaging provides a very compact, easy-to-assemble, and cost-efficient alternative for SiP designs for future broadband communication and sensing solutions.

47. A Low-Loss Bond-Wire Interconnect Design With More Than 130 GHz Bandwidth Enabling an Ultra-Broadband Heterogeneous System Design

Abstract

This article presents a low-loss, ultra-broadband, impedance-controlled bond-wire interconnect interface enabling heterogeneous system design with more than 130 GHz bandwidth. The article focuses on the bond-wire interface design, the substrate arrangement, and the bond-loop specification. Moreover, a robustness analysis of the interconnect regarding assembly tolerances is given. Furthermore, an analysis of parasitic radiation at the interconnect discontinuities is carried out. To account for the dielectric properties of the substrate, the alumina of the demonstrator circuit was precisely characterized. The proposed bond-wire interconnect has been verified up to 135 GHz with a de-embedded insertion loss (IL) of less than of 0.6 dB. A measured return loss (RL) of more than 25 dB over a bandwidth of 130 GHz demonstrates a mmW transparent interconnect, setting a new benchmark for bond-wire interconnect design. In addition, the bond-wire interface is easy to assemble, is insensitive to manufacturing tolerances and thermal expansion, and has a minimal space requirement, thereby providing a cost-effective alternative to flip-chip assemblies.
