We establish two complementary results about the regularity of the solution of the periodic initial value problem for the linear Benjamin-Ono equation. We first give a new simple proof of the statement that, for a dense countable set of the time variable, the solution is a finite linear combination of copies of the initial condition and of its Hilbert transform. In particular, this implies that discontinuities in the initial condition are propagated in the solution as logarithmic cusps. We then show that, if the initial condition is of bounded variation (and even if it is not continuous), for almost every time the graph of the solution in space is continuous but fractal, with upper Minkowski dimension equal to 3/2. In order to illustrate this striking dichotomy, in the final section we include accurate numerical evaluations of the solution profile, as well as estimates of its box-counting dimension for two canonical choices of irrational time., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

We have computed the even-N moments N =< 20 of the gluon-gluon splitting function P_{gg} at the fourth order of perturbative QCD via the renormalization of off-shell operator matrix elements. Our results, derived analytically for a general compact simple gauge group, agree with all results obtained for this function so far, in particular with the lowest five moments obtained via structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering. Using our new moments and all available endpoint constraints, we construct improved approximations for the four-loop P_{gg}(x) that should be sufficient for a wide range of collider-physics applications. We present the even-N moments N =< 20 of the fourth-order (N^3LO) contribution P_{gq}^(3)(x) to the quark-to-gluon splitting function in perturbative QCD. These moments, obtained by analytically computing off-shell operator matrix elements for a general gauge group, agree with all known results, in particular with the moments N =< 10 derived before from structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering. Using the new moments and the available endpoint constraints, we construct approximations for P_{gq}^(3)(x) which improve upon those obtained from the lowest five even moments. The remaining uncertainties of this function are now practically irrelevant at momentum fractions x > 0.1. The resulting errors of the convolution of P_{gq} at N^3LO with a typical quark distribution are small at x >~ 10^{-3} and exceed 1% only at x ~< 10^{-4} for a strong coupling alpha_s = 0.2. Typologically diverse benchmarks are increasingly created to track the progress achieved in multilingual NLP. Linguistic diversity of these data sets is typically measured as the number of languages or language families included in the sample, but such measures do not consider structural properties of the included languages. In this paper, we propose assessing linguistic diversity of a data set against a reference language sample as a means of maximising linguistic diversity in the long run. We represent languages as sets of features and apply a version of the Jaccard index suitable for comparing sets of measures. In addition to the features extracted from typological data bases, we propose an automatic text-based measure, which can be used as a means of overcoming the well-known problem of data sparsity in manually collected features. Our diversity score is interpretable in terms of linguistic features and can identify the types of languages that are not represented in a data set. Using our method, we analyse a range of popular multilingual data sets (UD, Bible100, mBERT, XTREME, XGLUE, XNLI, XCOPA, TyDiQA, XQuAD). We study the presence of a non-trivial revival effect in the solution of linear dispersive boundary value problems for two benchmark models which arise in applications: the Airy equation and the dislocated Laplacian Schr{\"o}dinger equation. In both cases, we consider boundary conditions of Dirichlet-type. We prove that, at suitable times, jump discontinuities in the initial profile are revived in the solution not only as jump discontinuities but also as logarithmic cusp singularities. We explicitly describe these singularities and show that their formation is due to interactions between the symmetries of the underlying spatial operators with the periodic Hilbert transform., Comment: 35 pages, 3 figures, 2 appendices

We study Dirichlet-type problems for the simplest third-order linear dispersive PDE, often referred to as the Airy equation. Such problems have not been extensively studied, perhaps due to the complexity of the spectral structure of the spatial operator. Our specific interest is to determine whether the peculiar phenomenon of revivals, also known as Talbot effect, is supported by these boundary conditions, which for third order problems are not reducible to periodic ones. We prove that this is the case only for a very special choice of the boundary conditions, for which a new type of weak cusp revival phenomenon has been recently discovered. The mysterious phenomena of revivals in linear dispersive periodic equations was discovered first experimentally in optics in the 19th century, then rediscovered several times by theoretical and experimental investigations. While the term has been used systematically and consistently by many authors, there is no consensus on a rigorous definition. In this paper, we describe revivals modulo a regularity condition in a large class of Schr\"odinger's equations with complex bounded potentials. In this short paper, we elucidate how the solution of certain illustrative boundary value problems for the Airy equation $u_t+u_{xxx}=0$ on $[0,1]$ can be expressed as a perturbation of the solution of the purely periodic problem. The motivation is to understand the role boundary conditions play in the properties of the solution. This is particularly important in related work on the solution of linear dispersive problems with discontinuous initial data and the phenomena of revivals and fractalization.

We have calculated the n_f^2 and n_f^3 contributions to the flavour non-singlet structure functions F_2 and F_L in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at the fourth order in the strong coupling alpha_s. The coefficient functions have been obtained by computing a very large number of Mellin-N moments using the method of differential equations, and then determining the analytic forms in N and Bjorken-x from these. Our new n_f^2 terms are numerically much larger than the n_f^3 leading large-nf parts which were already known; they agree with predictions of the threshold and high-energy resummations. Furthermore our calculation confirms the earlier determination of the four-loop n_f^2 part of the corresponding anomalous dimension. Via the no-pi^2 conjecture/theorem for Euclidean physical quantities, we predict the z4 n_f^3 part of the fifth-order anomalous dimension for the evolution of non-singlet quark distributions., Comment: 48 pages, LaTex, 5 eps-based figures. We present a new implementation of the geometric method of Cullen & Purser (1984) for solving the semi-geostrophic Eady slice equations which model large scale atmospheric flows and frontogenesis. The geometric method is a Lagrangian discretisation, where the PDE is approximated by a particle system. An important property of the discretisation is that it is energy conserving. We restate the geometric method in the language of semi-discrete optimal transport theory and exploit this to develop a fast implementation that combines the latest results from numerical optimal transport theory with a novel adaptive time-stepping scheme. Our results enable a controlled comparison between the Eady-Boussinesq vertical slice equations and their semi-geostrophic approximation. We provide further evidence that weak solutions of the Eady-Boussinesq vertical slice equations converge to weak solutions of the semi-geostrophic Eady slice equations as the Rossby number tends to zero., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures

We study the large time behaviour of the solution of a linear dispersive PDEs posed on a finite interval, when the prescribed boundary conditions are time periodic. We use the approach pioneered in Fokas & Lenells 2012 for nonlinear integrable PDEs. and then applied to linear problems on the half-line in Fokas & van der Weele 2021, to characterise necessary conditions for the solution of such a problem to be periodic, at least in an asymptotic sense. We then fully describe the periodicity properties of the solution in three important illustrative examples, recovering known results for the second-order cases and establishing new ones for the third order one., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure

We study the phenomenon of revivals for the linear Schr\"odinger and Airy equations over a finite interval, by considering several types of non-periodic boundary conditions. In contrast with the case of the linear Schr\"odinger equation examined recently (which we develop further), we prove that, remarkably, the Airy equation does not generally exhibit revivals even for boundary conditions very close to periodic. We also describe a new, weaker form of revival phenomena, present in the case of certain Robin-type boundary conditions for the linear Schr\"odinger equation. We present fully differential predictions for the production cross section of a Higgs boson via the gluon fusion mechanism at next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD perturbation theory. To perform our calculation we apply the Projection-to-Born method for the first time to the calculation of the non-factorising production of a colorless final state at the LHC at N$^3$LO. We predict differential distributions for the two photon final state produced by the decay of the Higgs boson and apply fiducial cuts on the photon rapidities and momenta. The N$^3$LO corrections to these differential distributions have complex features and are in part larger than the inclusive N$^3$LO corrections to the production cross section. Overall, we observe that the inclusion of the N$^3$LO QCD corrections significantly reduces the perturbative uncertainties and leads to a stabilisation of the perturbative expansion., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We present and analyse a novel manifestation of the revival phenomenon for linear spatially periodic evolution equations, in the concrete case of three nonlocal equations that arise in water wave theory and are defined by convolution kernels. Revival in these cases is manifested in the form of dispersively quantised cusped solutions at rational times. We give an analytic description of this phenomenon, and present illustrative numerical simulations.

We propose a novel representation of differential scattering cross-sections that locally realises the direct cancellation of infrared singularities exhibited by its so-called real-emission and virtual degrees of freedom. We take advantage of the Loop-Tree Duality representation of each individual forward-scattering diagram and we prove that the ensuing expression is locally free of infrared divergences, applies at any perturbative order and for any process without initial-state collinear singularities. Divergences for loop momenta with large magnitudes are regulated using local ultraviolet counterterms that reproduce the usual Lagrangian renormalisation procedure of quantum field theories. Our representation is especially suited for a numerical implementation and we demonstrate its practical potential by computing fully numerically and without any IR counterterm the next-to-leading order accurate differential cross-section for the process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow d \bar{d}$. We also show first results beyond next-to-leading order by computing interference terms part of the N4LO-accurate inclusive cross-section of a $1\rightarrow 2+X$ scalar scattering process., Comment: 88 pages

Loop-Tree Duality (LTD) is a framework in which the energy components of all loop momenta of a Feynman integral are integrated out using residue theorem, resulting in a sum over tree-like structures. Originally, the LTD expression exhibits cancellations of non-causal thresholds between summands, also known as dual cancellations. As a result, the expression exhibits numerical instabilities in the vicinity of non-causal thresholds and for large loop momenta. In this work we derive a novel, generically applicable, Manifestly Causal LTD (cLTD) representation whose only thresholds are causal thresholds, i.e. it manifestly realizes dual cancellations. Consequently, this result also serves as a general proof for dual cancellations. We show that LTD, cLTD, and the expression stemming from Time Ordered Perturbation Theory (TOPT) are locally equivalent. TOPT and cLTD both feature only causal threshold singularities, however LTD features better scaling with the number of propagators. On top of the new theoretical perspectives offered by our representation, it has the useful property that the ultraviolet (UV) behaviour of the original 4D integrand is maintained for every summand. We show that the resulting LTD integrand expression is completely stable in the UV region which is key for practical applications of LTD to the computation of amplitudes and cross sections. We present explicit examples of the LTD expression for a variety of up to four-loop integrals and show that its increased computational complexity can be efficiently mitigated by optimising its numerical implementation. We give a new and constructive proof of the existence of global-in-time weak solutions of the 3-dimensional incompressible semi-geostrophic equations (SG) in geostrophic coordinates, for arbitrary initial measures with compact support. This new proof, based on semi-discrete optimal transport techniques, works by characterising discrete solutions of SG in geostrophic coordinates in terms of trajectories satisfying an ordinary differential equation. It is advantageous in its simplicity and its explicit relation to Eulerian coordinates through the use of Laguerre tessellations. Using our method, we obtain improved time-regularity for a large class of discrete initial measures, and we compute explicitly two discrete solutions. The method naturally gives rise to an efficient numerical method, which we illustrate by presenting simulations of a 2-dimensional semi-geostrophic flow in geostrophic coordinates generated using a numerical solver for the semi-discrete optimal transport problem coupled with an ordinary differential equation solver., Comment: 35 pages, 2 figures

We introduce a novel construction of a contour deformation within the framework of Loop-Tree Duality for the numerical computation of loop integrals featuring threshold singularities in momentum space. The functional form of our contour deformation automatically satisfies all constraints without the need for fine-tuning. We demonstrate that our construction is systematic and efficient by applying it to more than 100 examples of finite scalar integrals featuring up to six loops. We also showcase a first step towards handling non-integrable singularities by applying our work to one-loop infrared divergent scalar integrals and to the one-loop amplitude for the ordered production of two and three photons. This requires the combination of our contour deformation with local counterterms that regulate soft, collinear and ultraviolet divergences. We study initial boundary value problems for linear evolution partial differential equations (PDEs) posed on a time-dependent interval $l_1(t)

The semi-geostrophic equations are used widely in the modelling of large-scale atmospheric flows. In this note, we prove the global existence of weak solutions of the incompressible semi-geostrophic equations, in geostrophic coordinates, in a three-dimensional domain with a free upper boundary. The proof, based on an energy minimisation argument originally inspired by Cullen's Stability Principle, uses optimal transport results as well as the analysis of Hamiltonian ODEs in spaces of probability measures as studied by Ambrosio and Gangbo. We also give a general formulation of Cullen's Stability Principle in a rigorous mathematical framework.

We present precise predictions for the Higgs boson rapidity distribution at the LHC in the gluon fusion production mode. Our approach relies on the fully analytic computation of six terms in a systematic expansion of the partonic differential cross section around the production threshold of the Higgs boson at next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD perturbation theory. We observe a mild correction compared to the previous perturbative order and a significant reduction of the dependence of the cross section on the perturbative scale throughout the entire rapidity range., Comment: 6 pages, 3 awesome figures

We present several key steps towards the computation of differential Higgs boson cross sections at N$^3$LO in perturbative QCD. Specifically, we work in the framework of Higgs-differential cross sections that allows to compute precise predictions for realistic LHC observables. We demonstrate how to perform an expansion of the analytic N$^3$LO coefficient functions around the production threshold of the Higgs boson. Our framework allows us to compute to arbitrarily high order in the threshold expansion and we explicitly obtain the first two expansion coefficients in analytic form. Furthermore, we assess the phenomenological viability of threshold expansions for differential distributions. In addition, we report on an interesting obstacle for the computation of N$^3$LO corrections with LHAPDF parton distribution functions and our solution. We present an analytic computation of the Higgs production cross section in the gluon fusion channel, which is differential in the components of the Higgs momentum and inclusive in the associated partonic radiation through NNLO in perturbative QCD. Our computation includes the necessary higher order terms in the dimensional regulator beyond the finite part that are required for renormalisation and collinear factorisation at N$^3$LO. We outline in detail the computational methods which we employ. We present the numerical solution of two-point boundary value problems for a third order linear PDE, representing a linear evolution in one space dimension. The difficulty of this problem is in the numerical imposition of the boundary conditions, and to our knowledge, no such computations exist. Instead of computing the evolution numerically, we evaluate the solution representation formula obtained by the unified transform of Fokas. This representation involves complex line integrals, but in order to evaluate these integrals numerically, it is necessary to deform the integration contours using appropriate deformation mappings. We formulate a strategy to implement effectively this deformation, which allows us to obtain accurate numerical results., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

We derive the solution representation for a large class of nonlocal boundary value problems for linear evolution PDEs with constant coefficients in one space variable. The prototypical such PDE is the heat equation, for which problems of this form model physical phenomena in chemistry and for which we formulate and prove a full result. We also consider the third order case, which is much less studied and has been shown by the authors to have very different structural properties in general. The nonlocal conditions we consider can be reformulated as \emph{multipoint conditions}, and then an explicit representation for the solution of the problem is obtained by an application of the Fokas transform method. The analysis is carried out under the assumption that the problem being solved is well posed, i.e.\ that it admits a unique solution. Sir, We write as senior scientists about a problem vital to the scientific enterprise and prosperity. Nowadays, funding is a lengthy and complex business. First, universities themselves must approve all proposals for submission. Funding agencies then subject those that survive to peer review, a process by which a few researchers, usually acting anonymously, assess a proposal's chances that it will achieve its goals, is the best value for money, is relevant to a national priority and will impact on a socio-economic problem. Only 25% of proposals received by the funding agencies are funded. These protracted processes force researchers to exploit existing knowledge, severely discourage open-ended studies and are hugely time-consuming. They are also new: before 1970, few researchers wrote proposals. Now they are virtually mandatory.

The semi-geostrophic system is widely used in the modelling of large-scale atmospheric flows. In this paper, we prove existence of solutions of the incompressible semi-geostrophic equations in a fully three-dimensional domain with a free upper boundary condition. We show that, using methods similar to those introduced in the pioneering work of Benamou and Brenier, who analysed the same system but with a rigid boundary condition, we can prove the existence of solutions for the incompressible free boundary problem. The proof is based on optimal transport results as well as the analysis of Hamiltonian ODEs in spaces of probability measures given by Ambrosio and Gangbo. We also show how these techniques can be modified to yield the same result also for the compressible version of the system.

The solution of an initial-boundary value problem for a linear evolution partial differential equation posed on the half-line can be represented in terms of an integral in the complex (spectral) plane. This representation is obtained by the {\em unified transform} introduced by Fokas in the 90's. On the other hand, it is known that many initial-boundary value problems can be solved via a classical transform pair, constructed via the spectral analysis of the associated spatial operator. For example, the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation can be solved by applying the Fourier sine transform pair. However, for many other initial-boundary value problems there is {\em no} suitable transform pair in the classical literature. Here we pose and answer two related questions: Given any well-posed initial-boundary value problem, does there exist a (non-classical) transform pair suitable for solving that problem? If so, can this transform pair be constructed via the spectral analysis of a differential operator? The answer to both of these questions is positive and given in terms of {\em augmented eigenfunctions}, a novel class of spectral functionals. The problem of heat conduction in one-dimensional piecewise homogeneous composite materials is examined by providing an explicit solution of the one-dimensional heat equation in each domain. The location of the interfaces is known, but neither temperature nor heat flux are prescribed there. Instead, the physical assumptions of their continuity at the interfaces are the only conditions imposed. The problem of two semi-infinite domains and that of two finite-sized domains are examined in detail. We give a characterisation of the spectral properties of linear differential operators with constant coefficients, acting on functions defined on a bounded interval, and determined by general linear boundary conditions. The boundary conditions may be such that the resulting operator is not selfadjoint. We associate the spectral properties of such an operator $S$ with the properties of the solution of a corresponding boundary value problem for the partial differential equation $\partial_t q \pm iSq=0$. Namely, we are able to establish an explicit correspondence between the properties of the family of eigenfunctions of the operator, and in particular whether this family is a basis, and the existence and properties of the unique solution of the associated boundary value problem. When such a unique solution exists, we consider its representation as a complex contour integral that is obtained using a transform method recently proposed by Fokas and one of the authors. The fully compressible semi-geostrophic system is widely used in the modelling of large-scale atmospheric flows. In this paper, we prove rigorously the existence of weak Lagrangian solutions of this system, formulated in the original physical coordinates. In addition, we provide an alternative proof of the earlier result on the existence of weak solutions of this system expressed in the so-called geostrophic, or dual, coordinates. The proofs are based on the optimal transport formulation of the problem and on recent general results concerning transport problems posed in the Wasserstein space of probability measures.

We study boundary value problems posed in a semistrip for the elliptic sine-Gordon equation, which is the paradigm of an elliptic integrable PDE in two variables. We use the method introduced by one of the authors, which provides a substantial generalization of the inverse scattering transform and can be used for the analysis of boundary as opposed to initial-value problems. We first express the solution in terms of a $2\times 2$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem formulated in terms of both the Dirichlet and the Neumann boundary values on the boundary of a semistrip. We then concentrate on the case that the prescribed boundary conditions are zero along the unbounded sides of the semistrip and constant along the bounded side; in this particular case we show that the "jump matrices" of the above Riemann-Hilbert problem can be expressed explicitly in terms of the width of the semistrip and the constant value of the solution along the bounded side. We present an algorithm for characterising the generalised Dirichlet to Neumann map for moving initial-boundary value problems. This algorithm is derived by combining the so-called global relation, which couples the initial and boundary values of the problem, with a new method for inverting certain one-dimensional integrals. This new method is based on the spectral analysis of an associated ODE and on the use of the d-bar formalism. As an illustration, the Neumann boundary value for the linearised Schroedinger equation is determined in terms of the Dirichlet boundary value and of the initial condition.
