In Radio Super Novae (RSNe) a magnetic field of $(B \, \times \, r) \, = \, 10^{16.0 \pm 0.12} \, {\rm Gauss \, \times \, cm}$ is observed; these are the same numbers for Blue Super Giant (BSG) star explosions as for Red Super Giant (RSG) star explosions, despite their very different wind properties. The EHT data for M87 as well for low power radio galaxies all show consistency with just this value of the quantity $(B \, \times \, r )$, key for angular momentum and energy transport, and can be derived from the radio jet data. We interpret this as a property of the near surroundings of a black hole (BH) at near maximal rotation, independent of BH mass. In the commonly used green onion model, in which a $2 \, \pi$ flow changes over to a jet flow we interpret this as a wind emanating from the BH/accretion disk system and its surroundings. Near the BH collisions in the wind can produce a large fraction of anti-protons. In this scenario the cosmic Ray (CR) population from the wind/jet is proposed to be visible as EeV protons and anti-protons in the CR data to EeV energy, with a $E^{-7/3}$ spectrum. This can be connected to a concept of inner and outer Penrose zones in the ergo-region. The AMS experiment on the International Space Station has provided detailed cosmic ray spectra for various elements, revealing that interactions significantly reduce fluxes up to about 100 GV rigidity. This necessitates revisiting current cosmic ray interaction models. A new model proposed here involves cosmic ray interactions first in the wind shock shell of supergiant stars and second in the OB-Superbubble around supernovae. These stars, including red and blue supergiants, produce black holes and drive electric currents in winds and jets. Variability in these winds creates temporary electric fields that accelerate particles, resulting in steep spectra with synchrotron losses, and analogous hadron spectra produce a flat magnetic irregularity spectrum. This model matches AMS data, explaining cosmic ray spectra below 100 GV. The model predicts a secondary/primary ratio slope of -1/3 and a primary flux reduction below 100 GV relative to a power-law spectrum with slope +2. Key aspects are: a larger interaction column due to heavy element enrichment and a minor secondary contribution even for elements like He, C, and O, as indicated by the $^3$He/$^4$He ratio. This manuscript will unify inverse freeform reflector design and surface light scattering to design freeform reflectors with a scattering surface. We use microfacets, which are small, tilted mirrors superimposed on a smooth surface. We form a simple model of surface roughness and light scattering based on the orientations of the microfacets. Using a least-squares solver to compute the smooth reflector as a starting point, we can subsequently alter the surface using an optimization procedure to account for the scattering. After optimization, the resulting reflector surface produces the desired scattered light distribution. We verify the resulting reflector using raytracing.

Quantum communication offers unique features that have no classical analog, in particular, it enables provably secure quantum key distribution (QKD). Despite the benefits of quantum communication are well understood within the scientific community, the practical implementations sometimes meet with scepticism or even resistance. In a recent publication [1], NSA claims that QKD is inferior to "quantum-resistant" cryptography and does not recommend it for use. Here we show that such a sceptical approach to evaluation of quantum security is not well justified. We hope that our arguments will be helpful to clarify the issue.

With the rise of quantum technologies, data security increasingly relies on quantum cryptography and its most notable application, quantum key distribution (QKD). Yet, current technological limitations, in particular, the unavailability of quantum repeaters, cause relatively low key distribution rates in practical QKD implementations. Here, we demonstrate a remarkable improvement in the QKD performance using end-to-end line tomography for the wide class of relevant protocols. Our approach is based on the real-time detection of interventions in the transmission channel, enabling an adaptive response that modifies the QKD setup and post-processing parameters, leading, thereby, to a substantial increase in the key distribution rates. Our findings provide everlastingly secure efficient quantum cryptography deployment potentially overcoming the repeaterless rate-distance limit.

Security of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols relies solely on quantum physics laws, namely, on the impossibility to distinguish between non-orthogonal quantum states with absolute certainty. Due to this, a potential eavesdropper cannot extract full information from the states stored in their quantum memory after an attack despite knowing all the information disclosed during classical post-processing stages of QKD. Here, we introduce the idea of encrypting classical communication related to error-correction in order to decrease the amount of information available to the eavesdropper and hence improve the performance of quantum key distribution protocols. We analyze the applicability of the method in the context of additional assumptions concerning the eavesdropper's quantum memory coherence time and discuss the similarity of our proposition and the quantum data locking (QDL) technique.

The internal structure of adhesive tapes determines the effective mechanical properties. This holds true especially for blended systems, here consisting of acrylate and rubber phases. In this note, we propose a lattice-based model to study numerically the formation of internal morphologies within a four-component mixture (of discrete particles) where the solvent components evaporate. Mimicking numerically the interaction between rubber, acrylate, and two different types of solvents, relevant for the technology of adhesive tapes, we aim to obtain realistic distributions of rubber ball-shaped morphologies -- they play a key role in the overall functionality of those special adhesives. We introduce a novel approach to calculating three-dimensional freeform reflectors with a scattering surface. Our method is based on optimal transport and utilizes a Fredholm integral equation to express scattering. By solving this integral equation through a process similar to deconvolution, which we call `unfolding,' we can recover a typical specular design problem. Consequently, we consider freeform reflector design with a scattering surface as a two-step process wherein the target distribution is first altered to account for scattering, and then the resulting specular problem is solved. We verify our approach using a custom raytracer that implements the surface scattering model we used to derive the Fredholm integral.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a revolutionary cryptography response to the rapidly growing cyberattacks threat posed by quantum computing. Yet, the roadblock limiting the vast expanse of secure quantum communication is the exponential decay of the transmitted quantum signal with the distance. Today's quantum cryptography is trying to solve this problem by focusing on quantum repeaters. However, efficient and secure quantum repetition at sufficient distances is still far beyond modern technology. Here, we shift the paradigm and build the long-distance security of the QKD upon the quantum foundations of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and end-to-end physical oversight over the transmitted optical quantum states. Our approach enables us to realize quantum states' repetition by optical amplifiers keeping states' wave properties and phase coherence. We combine two-dimensional freeform reflector design with a scattering surface modelled using microfacets, i.e., small specular surfaces representing surface roughness. The model results in a convolution integral for the scattered light intensity distribution, which yields an inverse specular problem after deconvolution. Thus, the shape of a reflector with a scattering surface may be computed using deconvolution, followed by solving the typical inverse problem of specular reflector design.

Distinguishability of photons in non-operational degrees of freedom compromises unconditional security of quantum key distribution since an eavesdropper can improve attack strategies by exploiting this distinguishability. However, the optimal eavesdropping strategies in the presence of light source side channels are not known. Here we provide several explicit attack strategies on the BB84 protocol with partially distinguishable photons. In particular, we consider the phase-covariant cloning attack, which is optimal in the absence of side channels, and show that there are even better strategies in the presence of side channels. The improved strategies exploit a measurement of the side channel state followed by an attack on the signal photon. Our results explicitly demonstrate reduction of the critical error rate, and set an upper bound on the practical secret key rate., Comment: Comments welcome

We perform a quantitative analysis of Monte Carlo simulations results of phase separation in ternary blends upon evaporation of one component. Specifically, we calculate the average domain size and plot it as a function of simulation time to compute the exponent of the obtained power-law. We compare and discuss results obtained by two different methods, for three different models: 2D binary-state model (Ising model), 2D ternary-state model with and without evaporation. For the ternary-state models, we study additionally the dependence of the domain growth on concentration, temperature and initial composition. We reproduce the expected 1/3 exponent for the Ising model, while for the ternary-state model without evaporation and for the one with evaporation we obtain lower values of the exponent. It turns out that phase separation patterns that can form in this type of systems are complex. The obtained quantitative results give valuable insights towards devising computable theoretical estimations of size effects on morphologies as they occur in the context of organic solar cells., Comment: 9 pages

Drug-related cues hijack attention away from alternative reinforcers in drug addiction, inducing craving and motivating drug-seeking. However, the neural correlates underlying this biased processing, its expression in the real-world, and its relationship to cue-induced craving are not fully established, especially in opioid addiction. Here we tracked inter-brain synchronization in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc), a hub of motivational salience, while heroin-addicted individuals and healthy control subjects watched the same engaging heroin-related movie. Strikingly, the left NAc was synchronized during drug scenes in the addicted individuals and non-drug scenes in controls, predicting scene- and movie-induced heroin craving in the former. Our results open a window into the neurobiology underlying shared drug-biased processing of naturalistic stimuli and cue-induced craving in opiate addiction as they unfold in the real world.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a cornerstone of the secure quantum encryption. Building on the quantum irreversibility, we develop a technique reborning the existing QKDs into protocols that are unrestricted in distance and have unprecedented high rates enhanced up to the standard protocols communication speeds. The core of our method is the continuous end-to-end physical control of information leaks in the quantum channel. Contrary to the existing long-distance QKD offerings, our technique does not require any trust nodes.

In this work, we study the security of coherent-state quantum key distribution with a strong reference pulse. The consideration is based on a powerful soft filtering attack and uses realistic parameters of the equipment. Our model allows us to relate the secure key generation rate and distance with the energy of signal and reference pulses. We propose a two-pass quantum key distribution phase encoding optical scheme with a strong reference pulse. This simple for realization scheme is experimentally tested showing stable operation. Here we describe the tuning technique and solution for the problem of weak signal pulse shadowing by a bright reference pulse with the relative intensity difference of more than 60\,dB between them., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We present a novel approach of modelling surface light scattering in the context of freeform optical design. The model relies on energy conservation and optimal transport theory. For isotropic scattering in cylindrically or rotationally symmetric systems with in-plane scattering, the scattered light distribution can be expressed as a convolution between a scattering function, which characterises the optical properties of the surface, and a specular light distribution. Deconvolving this expression allows for traditional specular reflector design procedures to be used, whilst accounting for scattering.

We develop a mesoscopic lattice model to study the morphology formation in interacting ternary mixtures with evaporation of one component. As concrete application of our model, we wish to capture morphologies as they are typically arising during fabrication of organic solar cells. In this context, we consider an evaporating solvent into which two other components are dissolved, as a model for a 2-component coating solution that is drying on a substrate. We propose a 3-spins dynamics to describe the evolution of the three interacting species. As main tool, we use a Monte Carlo Metropolis-based algorithm, with the possibility of varying the system's temperature, mixture composition, interaction strengths, and evaporation kinetics. The main novelty is the structure of the mesoscopic model -- a bi-dimensional lattice with periodic boundary conditions and divided in square cells to encode a mesoscopic range interaction among the units. We investigate the effect of the model parameters on the structure of the resulting morphologies. Finally, we compare the results obtained with the mesoscopic model with corresponding ones based on an analogous lattice model with a short range interaction among the units, i.e. when the mesoscopic length scale coincides with the microscopic length scale of the lattice., Comment: submitted to Frontiers in Physics, 23 pages, 13 figures

The spatial distribution of energetic protons contributes towards the understanding of magnetospheric dynamics. Based upon 17 years of the Cluster/RAPID observations, we have derived machine learning-based models to predict the proton intensities at energies from 28 to 1,885 keV in the 3D terrestrial magnetosphere at radial distances between 6 and 22 RE. We used the satellite location and indices for solar, solar wind and geomagnetic activity as predictors. The results demonstrate that the neural network (multi-layer perceptron regressor) outperforms baseline models based on the k-Nearest Neighbors and historical binning on average by ~80% and ~33\%, respectively. The average correlation between the observed and predicted data is about 56%, which is reasonable in light of the complex dynamics of fast-moving energetic protons in the magnetosphere. In addition to a quantitative analysis of the prediction results, we also investigate parameter importance in our model. The most decisive parameters for predicting proton intensities are related to the location: ZGSE direction and the radial distance. Among the activity indices, the solar wind dynamic pressure is the most important. The results have a direct practical application, for instance, for assessing the contamination particle background in the X-Ray telescopes for X-ray astronomy orbiting above the radiation belts. To foster reproducible research and to enable the community to build upon our work we publish our complete code, the data, as well as weights of trained models. Existing quantum cryptography is resistant against secrecy-breaking quantum computers but suffers fast decay of the signal at long distances. The various types of repeaters of propagating quantum states have been developed to meet the challenge, but the problem is far from being solved. We step in the breach and put forth long-distance high secrecy optical cryptography, creating the fast quantum key distribution over distances up to 40,000 kilometers. The key element of the proposed protocol is the physical control over the transmission line.

Quantum cryptography or, more precisely, quantum key distribution (QKD), is one of the advanced areas in the field of quantum technologies. The confidentiality of keys distributed with the use of QKD protocols is guaranteed by the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. This paper is devoted to the decoy state method, a countermeasure against vulnerabilities caused by the use of coherent states of light for QKD protocols whose security is proved under the assumption of single-photon states. We give a formal security proof of the decoy state method against all possible attacks. We compare two widely known attacks on multiphoton pulses: photon-number splitting and beam splitting. One of the major and unfortunately unforeseen sources of background for the current generation of X-ray telescopes are few tens to hundreds of keV (soft) protons concentrated by the mirrors. One such telescope is the European Space Agency's (ESA) X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton). Its observing time lost due to background contamination is about 40\%. This loss of observing time affects all the major broad science goals of this observatory, ranging from cosmology to astrophysics of neutron stars and black holes. The soft proton background could dramatically impact future large X-ray missions such as the ESA planned Athena mission (http://www.the-athena-x-ray-observatory.eu/). Physical processes that trigger this background are still poorly understood. We use a Machine Learning (ML) approach to delineate related important parameters and to develop a model to predict the background contamination using 12 years of XMM observations. As predictors we use the location of satellite, solar and geomagnetic activity parameters. We revealed that the contamination is most strongly related to the distance in southern direction, $Z$, (XMM observations were in the southern hemisphere), the solar wind radial velocity and the location on the magnetospheric magnetic field lines. We derived simple empirical models for the first two individual predictors and an ML model which utilizes an ensemble of the predictors (Extra Trees Regressor) and gives better performance. Based on our analysis, future missions should minimize observations during times associated with high solar wind speed and avoid closed magnetic field lines, especially at the dusk flank region in the southern hemisphere., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

The differential phase shift quantum key distribution protocol is of high interest due to its relatively simple practical implementation. This protocol uses trains of coherent pulses and allows the legitimate users to resist individual attacks. In this paper, a new attack on this protocol is proposed which is based on the idea of information extraction from the part of each coherent state and then making decision about blocking the rest part depending on the amount of extracted information.

A precise security analysis of practical quantum key distribution (QKD) systems is an important step for improving their performance. Here we consider a class of quantum soft filtering operations, which generalizes the unambiguous state discrimination (USD) technique. These operations can be applied as a basis for a security analysis of the original coherent one-way (COW) QKD protocol since their application interpolates between beam-splitting (BS) and USD attacks. We demonstrate that a zero-error attack based on quantum soft filtering operations gives a larger amount of the information for Eve at a given level of losses. We calculate the Eve information as a function of the channel length. The efficiency of the proposed attack highly depends on the level of the monitoring under the maintenance of the statistics of control (decoy) states, and best-case results are achieved in the case of the absence of maintenance of control state statistics. Our results form additional requirements for the analysis of practical QKD systems based on the COW QKD protocol and its variants by providing an upper bound on the security., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

This paper addresses the fundamental science question: "How does solar wind energy flow through the Earth's magnetosphere, how is it converted and distributed?". We need to understand how the Sun creates the heliosphere, and how the planets interact with the solar wind and its magnetic field, not just as a matter of scientific curiosity, but to address a clear and pressing practical problem: space weather, which can influence the performance and reliability of our technological systems, in space and on the ground, and can endanger human life and health. Much knowledge has already been acquired over the past decades, but the infant stage of space weather forecasting demonstrates that we still have a vast amount of learning to do. We can tackle this issue in two ways: 1) By using multiple spacecraft measuring conditions in situ in the magnetosphere in order to make sense of the fundamental small scale processes that enable transport and coupling, or 2) By taking a global approach to observations of the conditions that prevail throughout geospace in order to quantify the global effects of external drivers. A global approach is now being taken by a number of space missions under development and the first tantalising results of their exploration will be available in the next decade. Here we propose the next step-up in the quest for a complete understanding of how the Sun gives rise to and controls the Earth's plasma environment: a tomographic imaging approach comprising two spacecraft which enable global imaging of magnetopause and cusps, auroral regions, plasmasphere and ring current, alongside in situ measurements. Such a mission is going to be crucial on the way to achieve scientific closure on the question of solar-terrestrial interactions.

Jupiter has the most energetic and complex radiation belts in our solar system. Their hazardous environment is the reason why so many spacecraft avoid rather than investigate them, and explains how they have kept many of their secrets so well hidden, despite having been studied for decades. In this White Paper we argue why these secrets are worth unveiling. Jupiter's radiation belts and the vast magnetosphere that encloses them constitute an unprecedented physical laboratory, suitable for both interdisciplinary and novel scientific investigations: from studying fundamental high energy plasma physics processes which operate throughout the universe, such as adiabatic charged particle acceleration and nonlinear wave-particle interactions; to exploiting the astrobiological consequences of energetic particle radiation. The in-situ exploration of the uninviting environment of Jupiter's radiation belts present us with many challenges in mission design, science planning, instrumentation and technology development. We address these challenges by reviewing the different options that exist for direct and indirect observation of this unique system. We stress the need for new instruments, the value of synergistic Earth and Jupiter-based remote sensing and in-situ investigations, and the vital importance of multi-spacecraft, in-situ measurements. While simultaneous, multi-point in-situ observations have long become the standard for exploring electromagnetic interactions in the inner solar system, they have never taken place at Jupiter or any strongly magnetized planet besides Earth. We conclude that a dedicated multi-spacecraft mission to Jupiter's radiation belts is an essential and obvious way forward and deserves to be given a high priority in ESA's Voyage 2050 programme., Comment: 28 pages, 3 Tables, 11 Figures
