1. Evidence of Floquet electronic steady states in graphene under continuous-wave mid-infrared irradiation

Abstract: Light-induced phenomena in materials can exhibit exotic behavior that extends beyond equilibrium properties, offering new avenues for understanding and controlling electronic phases. So far, non-equilibrium phenomena in solids have been predominantly explored using femtosecond laser pulses, which generate transient, ultra-fast dynamics. Here, we investigate the steady non-equilibrium regime in graphene induced by a continuous-wave (CW) mid-infrared laser. Our transport measurements reveal signatures of a long-lived Floquet phase, where a non-equilibrium electronic population is stabilized by the interplay between coherent photoexcitation and incoherent phonon cooling. The observation of non-equilibrium steady states using CW lasers opens a new regime for low-temperature Floquet phenomena, paving the way toward Floquet engineering of steady-state phases of matter., Comment: 21 pages + supplemental materials

2. A non-Hermitian loop for a quantum measurement

Abstract: We establish a framework for a mechanism steering state vector collapse through time evolution as described by the Schr\"odinger's equation. Under the premise of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian dynamics, a main outcome is that collapse has to occur when the Hamiltonian completes a closed loop in the parameter space encoding the interaction with the meter. For two-level systems, we put forward the phenomenon of chiral state conversion as a mechanism effectively eliminating superpositions. Our results open a way to simulate quantum measurements in classical systems that up to now were restricted to the Schr\"odinger part of the quantum dynamics., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

3. Non-Reciprocal Coupling in Photonics

Abstract: Non-reciprocal interactions are ubiquitous in nature, and in Physics this realization has started to push boundaries by making non-hermiticity a fundamental rather than exceptional property. Despite the prevalence of evanescent coupling in physics, little attention has been paid to wavefunction profiles, with reciprocity often assumed for practical reasons. Our work challenges this assumption by demonstrating the origin of non-reciprocity in a photonic platform. We experimentally validate non-reciprocal dynamics on directional couplers fabricated via femtosecond laser writing, and corroborate our findings through continuous simulations. Extending these insights, we observe the topological Non-Hermitian Skin Effect in a Rice-Mele lattice model. 4. Breaking of Lorentz invariance caused by the interplay between spin-orbit interaction and transverse phonon modes in quantum wires

Abstract: We investigate Lorentz invariance breaking in quantum wires due to Rashba spin-orbit interaction and transverse phonons. Using bosonization, we derive an effective action coupling electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. Stikingly, at a quantum phase transition between straight and bent wire states, we find a gapped phonon mode and a gapless mode with quadratic dispersion, signaling the breaking of Lorentz invariance. We explore stability conditions for general potentials and propose nano-mechanical back-action as a sensitive tool for detecting this transition, with implications for Sliding Luttinger Liquids and dimensional crossover studies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

5. Topological phases of commensurate or incommensurate non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices

Abstract: We theoretically investigate topological features of a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with modulating non-Hermitian on-site potentials containing four sublattices per unit cell. The lattice can be either commensurate or incommensurate. In the former case, the entire lattice can be mapped by supercells completely. While in the latter case, there are two extra lattice points, thereby making the last cell incomplete. We find that an anti-PT transition occurs at exceptional points of edge states at certain parameters, which does not coincide with the conventional topological phase transition characterized by the Berry phase, provided the imaginary on-site potential is large enough. Interestingly, when the potential exceeds a critical value, edge states appear even in the regime with a trivial Berry phase. To characterize these novel edge states we present topological invariants associated with the system's parity. Finally, we analyze the dynamics for initial states with different spatial distributions, which exhibit distinct dynamics for the commensurate and incommensurate cases, depending on the imaginary part of edge state energy., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

6. Chiral magnon-polaron edge states in Heisenberg-Kitaev magnets

Abstract: The interplay of spin and lattice fluctuations in two-dimensional magnets without inversion symmetry is investigated. We find a general form for the magnetoelastic coupling between magnons and existing chiral phonons based on the symmetries of the crystalline lattice. We show that in hexagonal lattices, the coupling of magnons and chiral phonons derives from an anisotropic exchange spin model containing topological phases of magnons. Using the Heisenberg-Kitaev-$\Gamma$ model, we show how magnon-polaron edge states with circular polarization arise from this interaction. Our findings exploit the polarization degrees of freedom in spin-lattice systems, thus setting the ground for the transfer of angular momentum between chiral phonons and magnons., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

7. Wavefunction collapse driven by non-Hermitian disturbance

Abstract: In the context of the measurement problem, we propose to model the interaction between a quantum particle and an "apparatus" through a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian term. We simulate the time evolution of a normalized quantum state split into two spin components (via a Stern-Gerlach experiment) and that undergoes a wave-function collapse driven by a non-Hermitian Hatano-Nelson Hamiltonian. We further analyze how the strength and other parameters of the non-Hermitian perturbation influence the time-to-collapse of the wave function obtained under a Schr\"{o}dinger-type evolution. 8. Transport of non-classical light mediated by topological domain walls in a SSH photonic lattice

Abstract: Advancements in photonics technologies have significantly enhanced their capability to facilitate experiments involving quantum light, even at room temperature. Nevertheless, fully integrating photonic chips that include quantum light sources, effective manipulation and transport of light minimizing losses, and appropriate detection systems remains an ongoing challenge. Topological photonic systems have emerged as promising platforms to protect quantum light properties during propagation, beyond merely preserving light intensity. In this work, we delve into the dynamics of non-classical light traversing a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger photonic lattice with topological domain walls. Our focus centers on how topology influences the quantum properties of light as it moves across the array. By precisely adjusting the spacing between waveguides, we achieve dynamic repositioning and interaction of domain walls, facilitating effective beam-splitting operations. Our findings demonstrate high-fidelity transport of non-classical light across the lattice, replicating known results that are now safeguarded by the topology of the system. This protection is especially beneficial for quantum communication protocols with continuous variable states. 9. Floquet Engineering of a Diatomic Molecule Through a Bichromatic Radiation Field

Abstract: We report on a theoretical study of a Cs$_2$ molecule illuminated by two lasers and show how it can result in novel quantum dynamics. We reveal that these interactions facilitate the bypass of the non-crossing rule, forming Light-Induced Conical Intersections and modifiable avoided crossings. Our findings show how laser field orientation and strength, along with initial phase differences, can control molecular state transitions, especially on the micromotion scale. We also discuss extensively how the interaction of radiation with matter gives rise to the emergence of potential energy surfaces of hybrids of radiation and molecular states. 10. Continuous-time multivariate analysis

Abstract: The starting point for much of multivariate analysis (MVA) is an $n\times p$ data matrix whose $n$ rows represent observations and whose $p$ columns represent variables. Some multivariate data sets, however, may be best conceptualized not as $n$ discrete $p$-variate observations, but as $p$ curves or functions defined on a common time interval. Here we introduce a framework for extending techniques of multivariate analysis to such settings. The proposed continuous-time multivariate analysis (CTMVA) framework rests on the assumption that the curves can be represented as linear combinations of basis functions such as $B$-splines, as in the Ramsay-Silverman representation of functional data; but whereas functional data analysis extends MVA to the case of observations that are curves rather than vectors -- heuristically, $n\times p$ data with $p$ infinite -- we are instead concerned with what happens when $n$ is infinite. We present continuous-time extensions of the classical MVA methods of covariance and correlation estimation, principal component analysis, Fisher's linear discriminant analysis, and $k$-means clustering. We show that CTMVA can improve on the performance of classical MVA, in particular for correlation estimation and clustering, and can be applied in some settings where classical MVA cannot, including variables observed at disparate time points. CTMVA is illustrated with a novel perspective on a well-known Canadian weather data set, and with applications to data sets involving international development, brain signals, and air quality. The proposed methods are implemented in the publicly available R package \texttt{ctmva}.

12. Floquet topological phase transitions in a periodically quenched dimer

Abstract: We report on the theoretical investigation of the topological properties of a periodically quenched one-dimensional dimerized lattice where a piece-wise constant Hamiltonian switches from $h_1$ to $h_2$ at a partition time $t_p$ within each driving period $T$. We examine different dimerization patterns for $h_1$ and $h_2$ and the interplay with the driving parameters that lead to the emergence of topological states both at zero energy and at the edge of the Brillouin-Floquet quasi-energy zone. We illustrate different phenomena, including the occurrence of both edge states in a semimetal spectrum, the topological transitions, and the generation of zero-energy topological states from trivial snapshots. Abstract: Abstract Aims The multi‐systemic effects of heart failure (HF) resemble the spread observed during cancer. We propose a new score, named HLM, analogous to the TNM classification used in oncology, to assess the prognosis of HF. HLM refers to H: heart damage, L: lung involvement, and M: systemic multiorgan involvement. The aim was to compare the HLM score to the conventional New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification, American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) stages, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), to assess the most accurate prognostic tool for HF patients. Methods and results We performed a multicentre, observational, prospective study of consecutive patients admitted for HF. Heart, lung, and other organ function parameters were collected. Each patient was classified according to the HLM score, NYHA classification, ACC/AHA stages, and LVEF assessed by transthoracic echocardiography. The follow‐up period was 12 months. The primary endpoint was a composite of all‐cause death and rehospitalization due to HF. A total of 1720 patients who completed the 12 month follow‐up period have been enrolled in the study. 520 (30.2%) patients experienced the composite endpoint of all‐cause death and rehospitalization due to HF. 540 (31.4%) patients were female. The mean age of the study population was 70.5 ± 12.9. The mean LVEF at admission was 42.5 ± 13%. Regarding the population distribution across the spectrum of HLM score stages, 373 (21.7%) patients were included in the HLM‐1, 507 (29.5%) in the HLM‐2, 587 (34.1%) in the HLM‐3, and 253 (14.7%) in the HLM‐4. HLM was the most accurate score to predict the primary endpoint at 12 months. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was greater for the HLM score compared with the NYHA classification, ACC/AHA stages, or LVEF, regarding the composite endpoint (HLM = 0.645; NYHA = 0.580; ACC/AHA = 0.589; LVEF = 0.572). The AUC of the HLM score was significantly better compared with the LVEF (P = 0.002), ACC/AHA (P = 0.029), and NYHA (P = 0.009) AUC. Conclusions The HLM score has a greater prognostic power compared with the NYHA classification, ACC/AHA stages, and LVEF assessed by transthoracic echocardiography in terms of the composite endpoint of all‐cause death and rehospitalization due to HF at 12 months of follow‐up.

16. Evaluating a nurse-led narrative interview intervention with cancer patients with a first diagnosis: A feasibility study

Abstract: Narrative Medicine and Nursing are clinical-supporting intervention methodologies that aim to enhance professionals’ communication skills and place patients at the heart of their therapeutic path. A narrative interview (NI) is a communication tool between practitioner and patient. The role of NI is debated extensively in the literature, but no studies focus on its use by nurses responsible for first-diagnosed cancer patients.This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and utility of NI, carried out by Nurses, in managing people recently diagnosed with cancer.A pilot mixed-methods study with before-and-after-intervention evaluation, qualitative longitudinal data analysis, and concurrent data triangulation was conducted. The Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer assessed disease adaptation, while the Psychological Distress Inventory investigated psychological distress. The qualitative analysis of the narrative interviews assessed the usefulness of this intervention.13 out of 14 eligible patients took voluntary part in the study. Of those, 9 (69 %) completed T1 and T2 questionnaires and NI. The following five themes emerged from thematic analysis: reaction to the disease, feelings related to the new condition of life, changes, importance of relationships and perception of care. Patients reported being highly stressed and recognized the importance of a supporting social network for better coping with the condition.The adoption of an NI approach at the time of cancer diagnosis is feasible. Due to the limited sample size, it is unclear if NI may positively impact psychological distress in this patient population. Further studies would benefit from the integration of an additional investigation tool aiming to clarify whether NI promotes disease awareness in cancer patients. Furthermore, the recruitment of a larger sample is equally recommended.

Abstract: Abstract Dissemination of multiple myeloma into the bone marrow proceeds through sequential steps mediated by a variety of adhesion molecules and chemokines that eventually results in the extravasation of malignant plasma cells into this protective niche. Selectins are a class of C-type lectins that recognize carbohydrate structures exposed on blood borne cells and participate in the first step of the extravasation cascade, serving as brakes to slow down circulating cells enabling them to establish firm adhesion onto the endothelium. Myeloma cells enriched for the expression of selectin ligands present an aggressive disease in vivo that is refractory to bortezomib treatment and can be reverted by small molecules targeting E-selectin. In this study, we have defined the molecular determinants of the selectin ligands expressed on myeloma cells. We show that PSGL-1 is the main protein carrier of sialyl Lewisa/x-related structures in myeloma. PSGL-1 decorated with sialyl Lewisa/x is essential for P-selectin binding but dispensable for E-selectin binding. Moreover, sialylation is required for E-selectin engagement whereas high affinity binding to P-selectin occurs even in the absence of sialic acid. This study provides further knowledge on the biology of selectin ligands in myeloma, opening the way to their clinical application as diagnostic tools and therapeutic targets.

19. Copropagating edge states produced by the interaction between electrons and chiral phonons in two-dimensional materials

Abstract: Unlike the chirality of electrons, the intrinsic chirality of phonons has only surfaced in recent years. Here we report on the effects of the interaction between electrons and chiral phonons in two-dimensional materials by using a non-perturbative solution. We show that chiral phonons introduce inelastic \textit{Umklapp} processes resulting in copropagating edge states which coexist with a continuum. Transport simulations further reveal the robustness of the edge states. Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic appeared as an unpredictable disruption of daily activities. This situation produced a unique mental health impact for the general population, youth, and vulnerable groups. A documented consequence has been alcohol abuse and impaired mental health. To our knowledge, no published study has yet evaluated the rates of depressive symptoms, academic frustration, and substance abuse in the Italian student population in the COVID era linking them to sociodemographic variables. Aims: To investigate the incidence of depressive symptoms, academic frustration, and substance abuse students developed in one university in Northern Italy during the first COVID-19 outbreak, using a student wellbeing framework borrowed from Allardt's and Bronfenbrenner's theories. Methods: Descriptive statistics, correlations, Wilcoxon test and factorial ANOVA were performed on data gathered through an online questionnaire sent to a convenience sample of university students. Data collection occurred between 18 May and June 21, 2020. Results: According to the framework used, Being was the dimension of sociodemographic variables, Having was economic support and Loving was social support. Students experienced academic frustration and related depressive symptoms. Male gender seemed to be less affected by the depressive syndrome. With regard to economic support and related repercussions on depressive symptoms, students who reported that they could not obtain a loan showed significantly higher depressive symptoms. Students benefiting from greater financial support showed less academic frustration. Age appeared to be a predictor of academic frustration since young students proved to be the most frustrated. The examined students’ population showed a significant decrease in alcohol and cigarettes consumption. Conclusions: Having and Being dimensions influenced depression and academic frustration. Having and Loving dimensions were related with use of substances. The study findings support the implementation of interventions to help students, at a psychological, social, financial level aiming at fostering the quality of students’ educational life.

A flagship example are Weyl semimetals, which require breaking time-reversal or inversion symmetry. In two dimensions, the dimensionality reduction requires imposing an additional symmetry, thereby weakening the phase. Like its three-dimensional counterpart, these two-dimensional Weyl semimetals present edge states directly related to Weyl nodes. The direct comparison with the edge states in zigzag-like terminated graphene ribbons is unavoidable, offering the question of how robust these states are and their differences. Here we benchmark the robustness of the edge states in two-dimensional Weyl semimetals without inversion symmetry with those present in zigzag graphene ribbons. Our results show that, despite having a similar electronic band structure, the edge states of two-dimensional Weyl semimetal are more robust against vacancies than graphene ribbons. We address this question by studying the propagation of squeezed states in a topological one-dimensional waveguide array, benchmarking our results with those for a topologically trivial localized state, and studying their robustness against disorder. Specifically, we study photon statistics, one-mode and two-mode squeezing, and entanglement generation when the localized state is excited with squeezed light. These quantum properties inherit the shape of the localized state but, more interestingly, and unlike in the topologically trivial case, we find that propagation of squeezed light in a topologically protected state robustly preserves the phase of the squeezed quadrature as the system evolves. Abstract: We report on the fate of the quantum Hall effect in graphene under strong laser illumination. By using Floquet theory combined with both a low energy description and full tight-binding models, we clarify the selection rules, the quasienergy band structure, as well as their connection with the two-terminal and multi-terminal conductance in a device setup as relevant for experiments. We show that the well-known dynamical gaps that appear in the Floquet spectrum at $\pm\,\hbar\Omega/2$ lead to a switch-off of the quantum Hall edge transport for different edge terminations except for the armchair one, where two terms cancel out exactly. More interestingly, we show that near the Dirac point changing the laser polarization (circular right or circular left) controls the Hall conductance, by allowing to switch it on or off, or even by flipping its sign, thereby reversing the chirality of the edge states. Using Floquet scattering theory combined with atomistic models we study the interplay between laser illumination, spin and topology in a two-dimensional material with spin-orbit coupling. Starting from a topological phase, we show how laser illumination can selectively disrupt the topological edge states depending on their spin. This is manifested by the generation of pure spin currents and spin-polarized charge photocurrents under linearly and circularly polarized laser-illumination, respectively. Abstract: Patients undergoing physical rehabilitation therapy must perform series of exercises regularly over a long period of time to improve, or at least not to worsen, their condition. Rehabilitation can easily become boring because of the tedious repetition of simple exercises, which can also cause mild pain and discomfort. As a consequence, patients often fail to follow their rehabilitation schedule with the required regularity, thus endangering their recovery. In the last decade, video games have become largely popular and the availability of advanced input controllers has made them a viable approach to make physical rehabilitation more entertaining while increasing patients motivation. In this paper, we present a framework integrating serious games for the lower-limb rehabilitation of children suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). The framework comprises games that implement parts of the therapeutic protocol followed by the young patients and provides modules to tune, control, record, and analyze the therapeutic sessions. We present the result of a preliminary validation we performed with patients at the clinic under therapists supervision. The feedback we received has been overall very positive both from patients, who enjoyed performing their usual therapy using video games, and therapists, who liked how the games could keep the children engaged and motivated while performing the usual therapeutic routine.

31. Topological and flat bands states induced by hybridized interactions in one-dimensional photonic lattices

Abstract: We report on a study of a one-dimensional linear photonic lattice hosting, simultaneously, fundamental and dipolar modes at every site. We show how, thanks to the interaction between the different orbital modes, this minimal model exhibits rich transport and topological properties. By varying the detuning coefficient we find a regime where bands become flatter (with reduced transport) and, a second regime, where both bands connect on at a gap-closing transition (with enhanced transport). We detect an asymmetric transport due to the asymmetric inter-mode coupling and a linear energy exchange mechanism between modes. Further analysis show that the bands have a topological transition with a non-trivial Zak phase which leads to the appeareance of edge states in a finite system. Finally, for zero detuning, we found a symmetric condition for coupling constants, where the linear spectrum becomes completely flat, with states fully localized in space occupying only two lattice sites., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

This model has been recently proposed as a spin Hamiltonian to model $\text{CrI}_3$ and other two-dimensional magnets. It is a minimal spin Hamiltonian that includes a contribution stemming from a Heisenberg, isotropic exchange, and a contribution arising from a Kitaev interaction, anisotropic and frustrated exchange. Our calculations reveal the topological nature of the magnons and a gap that opens at the $K$ and $K^\prime$ points. These topological properties give rise to effects such as thermal Hall effect. Abstract: We report on the effect of laser illumination with circularly polarized light on the electronic structure of AB-stacked graphite samples. By using Floquet theory in combination with Green's function techniques, we find that the polarized light induces band-gap openings at the Floquet zone edge $\hbar\Omega/2$, bridged by chiral boundary states. These states propagate mainly along the borders of the constituting layers as evidenced by the time-averaged local density of states and the probability current density in several geometries. Semianalytic calculations of the Chern number suggest that these states are of topological nature, similar to those found in illuminated 2D samples like monolayer and bilayer graphene. Abstract: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a heterogeneous malignancy characterized by the proliferation of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow. Multiparametric flow cytometry (MFC) plays a role in the work-up of the disease in view of the aberrant expression of surface antigens. Our study aimed at describing the antigenic profile detected by MFC in a series of newly diagnosed MM patients to correlate the level of expression with other features of the disease. Between April 2018 and June 2022, 84 consecutive MM patients were studied at presentation. CD56 and CD117 were commonly detected, while CD45, CD28, CD20, CD19, CD13 and CD33 were less recurrent. CD20 expression was associated with the type of secretory MM (p=0.041) and with a higher disease burden (p=0.038). CD28 positivity correlated with a lower platelet count at baseline (p=0.005) and with a lower rate of complete response (p=0.038). Furthermore, CD28 positivity and a lower CD138 expression tended to associate with the high-risk chromosomal translocations t(14;16) and t(4;14). The results of this study indicate that in the diagnostic work-up of MM, MFC may help to identify different patient subsets and improve risk stratification. These observations need to be validated in larger series of patients with a longer follow-up.

Abstract: We propose a directional switching effect in a metallic device. To such end we exploit a graphene-based device with a three-terminal geometry in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that unidirectional charge and valley currents can be controlled by the Fermi energy and the magnetic field direction in the active device. Interestingly, unidirectional transport of charge and valley is generated between two-terminals at the same bias voltage. Furthermore, we quantify the valley depolarization as a function of disorder concentration. Our results open a way for active graphene-based valleytronics devices.

Abstract: Abstract This retrospective observational study (NEUF) included adult patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-cell ALL) who had received blinatumomab for the treatment of minimal residual disease-positive (MRD+) or relapsed/refractory (R/R) B-cell ALL via an expanded access program (EAP). Patients were eligible if blinatumomab was initiated via the EAP between January 2014 and June 2017. Patients were followed from blinatumomab initiation until death, entry into a clinical trial, the end of follow-up, or the end of the study period (December 31, 2017), whichever occurred first. Abstract: Abstract Background The diagnosis of periprocedural myocardial infarction (PMI) after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is based on biochemical markers along with clinical and instrumental findings. However, there is not a clear cutoff value of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) to identify PMI. We hypothesized that isolated hs-cTn concentrations in the first 24 h following CABG could predict cardiac adverse events (in-hospital death and PMI) and/or left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) decrease. Methods We retrospectively enrolled all consecutive adult patients undergoing CABG, alone or in association with other cardiac surgery procedures, over 1 year. Hs-cTn I concentrations (Access, Beckman Coulter) were serially measured in the post-operative period and analyzed according to post-operative outcomes. Results 300 patients were enrolled; 71.3% underwent CABG alone, 33.7% for acute coronary syndrome. Most patients showed hs-cTn I values superior to the limit required by the latest guidelines for the diagnosis of PMI. Five patients (1.7%) died, 8% developed a PMI, 10.6% showed a LVEF decrease ≥ 10%. Abstract: Abstract Background Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) may be more susceptible to COVID-19 related poor outcomes, including thrombosis and death, due to the advanced age, the presence of comorbidities, and the disease and treatment-related immune deficiency. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of thrombosis and bleeding in patients with CLL affected by severe COVID-19. Methods This is a retrospective multicenter study conducted by ERIC, the European Research Initiative on CLL, including patients from 79 centers across 22 countries. Data collection was conducted between April and May 2021. The COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed by the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay for SARS-CoV-2 on nasal or pharyngeal swabs. Severe cases of COVID-19 were defined by hospitalization and the need of oxygen or admission into ICU. Development and type of thrombotic events, presence and severity of bleeding complications were reported during treatment for COVID-19. Bleeding events were classified using ISTH definition. STROBE recommendations were used in order to enhance reporting. Results A total of 793 patients from 79 centers were included in the study with 593 being hospitalized (74.8%). Among these, 511 were defined as having severe COVID: 162 were admitted to the ICU while 349 received oxygen supplementation outside the ICU. Most patients (90.5%) were receiving thromboprophylaxis. During COVID-19 treatment, 11.1% developed a thromboembolic event, while 5.0% experienced bleeding. Thrombosis developed in 21.6% of patients who were not receiving thromboprophylaxis, in contrast to 10.6% of patients who were on thromboprophylaxis. Bleeding episodes were more frequent in patients receiving intermediate/therapeutic versus prophylactic doses of low-molecular-weight heparin (LWMH) (8.1% vs. 3.8%, respectively) and in elderly. In multivariate analysis, peak D-dimer level and C-reactive protein to albumin ratio were poor prognostic factors for thrombosis occurrence (OR = 1.022, 95%CI 1.007‒1.038 and OR = 1.025, 95%CI 1.001‒1.051, respectively), while thromboprophylaxis use was protective (OR = 0.199, 95%CI 0.061‒0.645). Age and LMWH intermediate/therapeutic dose administration were prognostic factors in multivariate model for bleeding (OR = 1.062, 95%CI 1.017–1.109 and OR = 2.438, 95%CI 1.023–5.813, respectively). Conclusions Patients with CLL affected by severe COVID-19 are at a high risk of thrombosis if thromboprophylaxis is not used, but also at increased risk of bleeding under the LMWH intermediate/therapeutic dose administration.

Abstract: Angiosarcomas (ASs) are rare malignant vascular entities that can affect several regions in our body, including the heart. Cardiac ASs comprise 25–40% of cardiac sarcomas and can cause death within months of diagnosis. Thus, our aim was to identify potential differences and/or similarities between cardiac and extra-cardiac ASs to enhance targeted therapies and, consequently, patients’ prognosis. Whole-transcriptome analysis of three cardiac and eleven extra-cardiac non-cutaneous samples was performed to investigate differential gene expression and mutational events between the two groups. The gene signature of cardiac and extra-cardiac non-cutaneous ASs was also compared to that of cutaneous angiosarcomas (n = 9). H/N/K-RAS and TP53 alterations were more recurrent in extra-cardiac ASs, while POTE-gene family overexpression was peculiar to cardiac ASs. Additionally, in vitro functional analyses showed that POTEH upregulation conferred a growth advantage to recipient cells, partly supporting the cardiac AS aggressive phenotype and patients’ scarce survival rate. These features should be considered when investigating alternative treatments.

Abstract: Recently, the search for topological states of matter has turned to non-Hermitian systems, which exhibit a rich variety of unique properties without Hermitian counterparts. Lattices modeled through non-Hermitian Hamiltonians appear in the context of photonic systems, where one needs to account for gain and loss, circuits of resonators, and also when modeling the lifetime due to interactions in condensed matter systems.
