The quadratically regularized optimal transport problem has recently been considered in various applications where the coupling needs to be \emph{sparse}, i.e., the density of the coupling needs to be zero for a large subset of the product of the supports of the marginals. However, unlike the acclaimed entropy-regularized optimal transport, the effect of quadratic regularization on the transport problem is not well understood from a mathematical standpoint. In this work, we take a first step towards its understanding. We prove that the difference between the cost of optimal transport and its regularized version multiplied by the ratio $\varepsilon^{-\frac{2}{d+2}}$ converges to a nontrivial limit as the regularization parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to 0. The proof confirms a conjecture from Zhang et al. (2023) where it is claimed that a modification of the self-similar solution of the porous medium equation, the Barenblatt--Pattle solution, can be used as an approximate solution of the regularized transport cost for small values of $\varepsilon$.

We describe laboratory experiments in a 2D wave tank that aim at building up and monitor 2D shallow water soliton gas. The water surface elevation is obtained over a large ($\sim 100\,\text{m}^2$) domain, with centimetre-resolution, by stereoscopic vision using two cameras. Floating particles are seeded to get surface texture and determine the wave field by image correlation. With this set-up, soliton propagation and multiple interactions can be measured with a previously unreachable level of detail. The propagation of an oblique soliton is analysed, the amplitude decay and local incidence are compared to analytical predictions. We further present two cases of 2D soliton gas, emerging from multiple line solitons with random incidence ($|\theta|<30^\circ$) and from irregular random waves forced with a {\sc jonswap} spectrum ($|\theta|<45^\circ$). To our knowledge, those are the first observations of random 2D soliton gas for gravity waves. In both cases Mach reflections and Mach expansions result in solitons that mainly propagate in directions perpendicular to the wave-makers., Comment: Accepted for publication in Experiments in Fluids

We propose a new metric between probability measures on a compact metric space that mirrors the Riemannian manifold-like structure of quadratic optimal transport but includes entropic regularization. Its metric tensor is given by the Hessian of the Sinkhorn divergence, a debiased variant of entropic optimal transport. We precisely identify the tangent space it induces, which turns out to be related to a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). As usual in Riemannian geometry, the distance is built by looking for shortest paths. We prove that our distance is geodesic, metrizes the weak-star topology, and is equivalent to a RKHS norm. Still it retains the geometric flavor of optimal transport: as a paradigmatic example, translations are geodesics for the quadratic cost on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also show two negative results on the Sinkhorn divergence that may be of independent interest: that it is not jointly convex, and that its square root is not a distance because it fails to satisfy the triangle inequality., Comment: 52 pages, 6 figures

In this note, we give sufficient conditions for the (semi)stability of a hypersurface $H$ of $\mathbb{P}^N_k$ in terms of its degree $d$, the maximal multiplicity $\delta$ of its singularities, and the dimension $s$ of its singular locus. For instance, we show that $H$ is semistable when $d \geq \delta \min (N+1, s+3)$. The proof relies in particular on Benoist's lower bound for the dimension of the intersection of the singular locus $H_{\mathrm{sing}}$ of $H$ with some linear subspace of $\mathbb{P}^N_k$ associated to a one-parameter subgroup $\lambda$ of $\mathrm{SL}_{N+1, k}$, in terms of the numerical data in the Hilbert-Mumford criterion applied to $\lambda$ and to an equation $F_H$ of $H$., Comment: 17 pages. We report on the statistical analysis of stratified turbulence forced by large-scale waves. The setup mimics some features of the tidal forcing of turbulence in the ocean interior at submesoscales. Our experiments are performed in the large-scale Coriolis facility in Grenoble which is 13 m in diameter and 1 m deep. Four wavemakers excite large scale waves of moderate amplitude. In addition to weak internal wave turbulence at large scales, we observe strongly nonlinear waves, the breaking of which triggers intermittently strong turbulence at small scales. A transition to strongly nonlinear turbulence is observed at smaller scales. Our measurements are reminiscent of oceanic observations. Despite similarities with the empirical Garrett & Munk spectrum that assumes weak wave turbulence, our observed energy spectra are rather be attributed to strongly nonlinear internal waves., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We investigate the link between regularised self-transport problems and maximum likelihood estimation in Gaussian mixture models (GMM). This link suggests that self-transport followed by a clustering technique leads to principled estimators at a reasonable computational cost. Also, robustness, sparsity and stability properties of the optimal transport plan arguably make the regularised self-transport a statistical tool of choice for the GMM., Comment: 10 pages

There has been extensive activity exploring the doping of semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides in order to tune their electronic and magnetic properties. The outcome of doping depends on various factors, including the intrinsic properties of the host material, the nature of the dopants used, their spatial distribution as well as their interactions with other types of defects. A thorough atomic-level analysis is essential to fully understand these mechanisms. In this work, vanadium doped WSe$_2$ monolayer grown by molecular beam epitaxy is investigated using four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM). Through center of mass-based reconstruction, atomic scale maps are produced, allowing the visualization of both the electric field and the electrostatic potential around individual V atoms. To provide quantitative insights, these results are successfully compared with multislice image simulations based on ab initio calculations, accounting for lens aberrations. Finally, a negative charge around the V dopants is detected as a drop in the electrostatic potential, unambiguously demonstrating that 4D-STEM can be used to detect and to accurately analyze single dopant charge states in semiconducting 2D materials., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures and Supporting Information

Manifold learning is a central task in modern statistics and data science. Many datasets (cells, documents, images, molecules) can be represented as point clouds embedded in a high dimensional ambient space, however the degrees of freedom intrinsic to the data are usually far fewer than the number of ambient dimensions. The task of detecting a latent manifold along which the data are embedded is a prerequisite for a wide family of downstream analyses. Real-world datasets are subject to noisy observations and sampling, so that distilling information about the underlying manifold is a major challenge. We propose a method for manifold learning that utilises a symmetric version of optimal transport with a quadratic regularisation that constructs a sparse and adaptive affinity matrix, that can be interpreted as a generalisation of the bistochastic kernel normalisation. We prove that the resulting kernel is consistent with a Laplace-type operator in the continuous limit, establish robustness to heteroskedastic noise and exhibit these results in simulations. We identify a highly efficient computational scheme for computing this optimal transport for discrete data and demonstrate that it outperforms competing methods in a set of examples.

Optimal transport (OT) based data analysis is often faced with the issue that the underlying cost function is (partially) unknown. This paper is concerned with the derivation of distributional limits for the empirical OT value when the cost function and the measures are estimated from data. For statistical inference purposes, but also from the viewpoint of a stability analysis, understanding the fluctuation of such quantities is paramount. Our results find direct application in the problem of goodness-of-fit testing for group families, in machine learning applications where invariant transport costs arise, in the problem of estimating the distance between mixtures of distributions, and for the analysis of empirical sliced OT quantities. The established distributional limits assume either weak convergence of the cost process in uniform norm or that the cost is determined by an optimization problem of the OT value over a fixed parameter space. For the first setting we rely on careful lower and upper bounds for the OT value in terms of the measures and the cost in conjunction with a Skorokhod representation. The second setting is based on a functional delta method for the OT value process over the parameter space. The proof techniques might be of independent interest., Comment: 62 pages

We consider the conjecture proposed in Matsumoto, Zhang and Schiebinger (2022) suggesting that optimal transport with quadratic regularisation can be used to construct a graph whose discrete Laplace operator converges to the Laplace--Beltrami operator. We derive first order optimal potentials for the problem under consideration and find that the resulting solutions exhibit a surprising resemblance to the well-known Barenblatt--Prattle solution of the porous medium equation. Then, relying on these first order optimal potentials, we derive the pointwise $L^2$-limit of such discrete operators built from an i.i.d. random sample on a smooth compact manifold. Simulation results complementing the limiting distribution results are also presented.

Based on measure transportation ideas and the related concepts of center-outward quantile functions, we propose multiple-output center-outward generalizations of the traditional univariate concepts of Lorenz and concentration functions, and the related Gini and Kakwani coefficients. These new concepts have a natural interpretation, either in terms of contributions of central ("middle-class") regions to the expectation of some variable of interest, or in terms of the physical notions of work and energy, which sheds new light on the nature of economic and social inequalities. Importantly, the proposed concepts pave the way to statistically sound definitions, based on multiple variables, of quantiles and quantile regions, and the concept of "middle class," of high relevance in various socio-economic contexts.

We analyze a set of bidirectional wave experiments in a linear wave flume of which some are conducive to integrable turbulence. In all experiments the wavemaker forcing is sinusoidal and the wave motion is recorded by seven high-resolution side-looking cameras. The periodic scattering transform is implemented and power spectral densities computed to discriminate linear wave motion states from integrable turbulence and soliton gas. Values of the wavemaker forcing Ursell number and relative amplitude are required to be above some threshold values for the integral turbulence to occur. Despite the unavoidable slow damping, soliton gases achieve stationary states because of the continuous energy input by the wavemaker. The statistical properties are given in terms of probability density distribution, skewness and kurtosis. The route to integrable turbulence, by the disorganization of the wavemaker induced sinusoidal wave motion, depends on the non-linearity of the waves but equally on the amplitude amplification and reduction due to the wavemaker feedback on the wave field.

Stratified flows forced by internal waves similar to those obtained in the Coriolis platform (LEGI, Grenoble, France) \cite{Savaro2020} are studied by pseudospectral triply-periodic simulations. The experimental forcing mechanism consisting in large oscillating vertical panels is mimicked by a penalization method. The analysis of temporal and spatiotemporal spectra reveals that the flow for the strongest forcing in the experiments is composed of two superposed large and quasi-steady horizontal vortices, of internal waves in box modes and of much weaker waves outside the modes. Spatial spectra and spectral energy budget confirm that the flow is in an intermediate regime for very small horizontal Froude number $F_h$ and buoyancy Reynolds number $R$ close to unity. Since the forcing frequency $\omega_f$ is just slightly smaller than the Brunt-V\"ais\"al\"a frequency $N$, there are energy transfers towards slower waves and large vortices, which correspond to an upscale energy flux over the horizontal. Two other experimentally feasible sets of parameters are investigated. A larger amplitude forcing shows that it would indeed be possible to produce in huge apparatus like the Coriolis platform stratified turbulence forced by waves for small $F_h$ and buoyancy Reynolds number $R$ of order 10. Forcing slower waves for $\omega_f = 0.40 N$ leaves space between $\omega_f$ and $N$ for "down-time-scale" transfers through weakly nonlinear interactions with temporal spectra consistent with $\omega^{-2}$ slope. However, for this set of parameters, the large scales of the flow are strongly dissipative and there is no downscale energy cascade.

We study the asymptotic behavior of the expectation of the maxima and minima of random assignment process generated by a large matrix with multinomial entries. A variety of results is obtained for different sparsity regimes.

Recent developments of the weak turbulence theory applied to internal waves exhibit a power-law solution of the kinetic energy equation close to the oceanic Garrett \& Munk spectrum, confirming weakly nonlinear wave interactions as a likely explanation of the observed oceanic spectra. However, finite-size effects can hinder wave interactions in bounded domains, and observations often differ from theoretical predictions. This article studies the dynamical regimes experimentally developing in a stratified fluid forced by internal gravity waves in a pentagonal domain. We find that by changing the shape and increasing the dimensions of the domain, finite-size effects diminish and wave turbulence is observed. In this regime, the temporal spectra decay with a slope compatible with the Garrett-Munk spectra. Different regimes appear by changing the forcing conditions, namely discrete wave turbulence, weak wave turbulence, and strongly stratified turbulence. The buoyancy Reynolds number $Re_b$ marks well the transitions between the regimes, with weak wave turbulence occurring for $1\lesssim Re_b\lesssim 3.5$ and strongly non-linear stratified turbulence for higher $Re_b$., Comment: submitted to Physical Review Fluids

In this paper, we consider a certain convolutional Laplacian for metric measure spaces and investigate its potential for the statistical analysis of complex objects. The spectrum of that Laplacian serves as a signature of the space under consideration and the eigenvectors provide the principal directions of the shape, its harmonics. These concepts are used to assess the similarity of objects or understand their most important features in a principled way which is illustrated in various examples. Adopting a statistical point of view, we define a mean spectral measure and its empirical counterpart. The corresponding limiting process of interest is derived and statistical applications are discussed.

We establish that the limiting spectral distribution of a block-rescaled empirical covariance matrix is an arcsine law when the ratio between the dimension and the underlying sample size converges to 1 and when the samples corresponding to each block are independent. We further propose a conjecture for the cases where the latter ratio converges to a constant in the unit interval.

An experimental Lagrangian study based on particle tracking velocimetry has been completed in an incompressible turbulent round water jet freely spreading into water. The jet is seeded with tracers only through the nozzle: inhomogeneous seeding called nozzle seeding. The Lagrangian flow tagged by these tracers therefore does not contain any contribution from particles entrained into the jet from the quiescent surrounding fluid. The mean velocity field of the nozzle seeded flow, $\langle \boldsymbol{U_\varphi} \rangle$, is found to be essentially indistinguishable from the global mean velocity field of the jet, $\langle \boldsymbol{U} \rangle$, for the axial velocity while significant deviations are found for the radial velocity. This results in an effective compressibility of the nozzle seeded flow for which $\boldsymbol{\nabla \cdot} \langle \boldsymbol{U_\varphi} \rangle \neq 0$ even though the global background flow is fully incompressible. By using mass conservation and self-similarity, we quantitatively explain the modified radial velocity profile and analytically express the missing contribution associated to entrained fluid particles. By considering a classical advection-diffusion description, we explicitly connect turbulent diffusion of mass (through the turbulent diffusivity $K_T$) and momentum (through the turbulent viscosity $\nu_T$) to entrainment. This results in new practical relations to experimentally determine the non-uniform spatial profiles of $K_T$ and $\nu_T$ (and hence of the turbulent Prandtl number $\sigma_T = \nu_T/K_T$) from simple measurements of the mean tracer concentration and axial velocity profiles. Extending to dimension 2 and higher the dual univariate concepts of ranks and quantiles has remained an open problem for more than half a century. Based on measure transportation results, a solution has been proposed recently under the name center-outward ranks and quantiles which, contrary to previous proposals, enjoys all the properties that make univariate ranks a successful tool for statistical inference. Just as their univariate counterparts (to which they reduce in dimension one), center-outward ranks allow for the construction of distribution-free and asymptotically efficient tests for a variety of problems where the density of some noise or innovation remains unspecified. The actual implementation of these tests involves the somewhat arbitrary choice of a grid. While the asymptotic impact of that choice is nil, its finite-sample consequences are not. In this note, we investigate the finite-sample impact of that choice in the typical context of the multivariate two-sample location problem.

The last decade has seen a significant increase in the number of studies devoted to wave turbulence. Many deal with water waves, as modeling of ocean waves has historically motivated the development of weak turbulence theory, which adresses the dynamics of a random ensemble of weakly nonlinear waves in interaction. Recent advances in experiments have shown that this theoretical picture is too idealized to capture experimental observations. While gravity dominates much of the oceanic spectrum, waves observed in the laboratory are in fact gravity-capillary waves, due to the restricted size of wave basins. This richer physics induces many interleaved physical effects far beyond the theoretical framework, notably in the vicinity of the gravity-capillary crossover. These include dissipation, finite-system size effects, and finite nonlinearity effects. To quantify the dependence between two random vectors of possibly different dimensions, we propose to rely on the properties of the 2-Wasserstein distance. We first propose two coefficients that are based on the Wasserstein distance between the actual distribution and a reference distribution with independent components. The coefficients are normalized to take values between 0 and 1, where 1 represents the maximal amount of dependence possible given the two multivariate margins. We then make a quasi-Gaussian assumption that yields two additional coefficients rooted in the same ideas as the first two. These different coefficients are more amenable for distributional results and admit attractive formulas in terms of the joint covariance or correlation matrix. Furthermore, maximal dependence is proved to occur at the covariance matrix with minimal von Neumann entropy given the covariance matrices of the two multivariate margins. This result also helps us revisit the RV coefficient by proposing a sharper normalisation. The two coefficients based on the quasi-Gaussian approach can be estimated easily via the empirical covariance matrix. The estimators are asymptotically normal and their asymptotic variances are explicit functions of the covariance matrix, which can thus be estimated consistently too. The results extend to the Gaussian copula case, in which case the estimators are rank-based. The results are illustrated through theoretical examples, Monte Carlo simulations, and a case study involving electroencephalography data.

A Lagrangian experimental study of an axisymmetric turbulent water jet is performed to investigate the highly anisotropic and inhomogeneous flow field. The measurements were conducted within a Lagrangian exploration module, an icosahedron apparatus, to facilitate optical access of three cameras. The stereoscopic particle tracking velocimetry results in three component tracks of position, velocity and acceleration of the tracer particles within the vertically-oriented jet with a Taylor-based Reynolds number $\mathcal R_\lambda \simeq 230$. Analysis is performed at seven locations from 15 diameters up to 45 diameters downstream. Eulerian analysis is first carried out to obtain critical parameters of the jet and relevant scales, namely the Kolmogorov and large turnover (integral) scales as well as the energy dissipation rate. Lagrangian statistical analysis is then performed on velocity components stationarised following methods inspired by Batchelor (\textit{J. Fluid Mech.}, vol. 3, 1957, pp. 67-80) which aim to extend stationary Lagrangian theory of turbulent diffusion by Taylor to the case of self-similar flows. The evolution of typical Lagrangian scaling parameters as a function of the developing jet is explored and results show validation of the proposed stationarisation. The universal scaling constant $C_0$ (for the Lagrangian second-order structure function), as well as Eulerian and Lagrangian integral time scales are discussed in this context. $C_0$ is found to converge to a constant value (of the order of $C_0 = 3$) within 30 diameters downstream of the nozzle. Finally, the existence of finite particle size effects are investigated through consideration of acceleration dependent quantities.

An experimental procedure for studying soliton gases in shallow water is devised. Nonlinear waves propagate at constant depth in a 34\,m-long wave flume. At one end of the flume, the waves are generated by a piston-type wave-maker. The opposite end is a vertical wall. Wave interactions are recorded with a video system using seven side-looking cameras with a pixel resolution of 1\,mm, covering 14\,m of the flume. The accuracy in the detection of the water surface elevation is shown to be better than 0.1 mm. A continuous monochromatic forcing can lead to a random state such as a soliton gas. The measured wave field is separated into right- and left-propagating waves in the Radon space and solitary pulses are identified as solitons of KdV or Rayleigh types. Both weak and strong interactions of solitons are detected. These interactions induce phase shifts that constitute the seminal mechanism for disorganization and soliton gas formation.

We report on the observation of surface gravity wave turbulence at scales larger than the forcing ones in a large basin. In addition to the downscale transfer usually reported in gravity wave turbulence, an upscale transfer is observed, interpreted as the inverse cascade of weak turbulence theory. A steady state is achieved when the inverse cascade reaches a scale in between the forcing wavelength and the basin size, but far from the latter. This inverse cascade saturation, which depends on the wave steepness, is probably due to the emergence of nonlinear dissipative structures such as sharp-crested waves., Comment: Physical Review Letters, American Physical Society, In press

We investigate experimentally stratified turbulence forced by waves. Stratified turbulence is present in oceans and it is expected to be dominated by nonlinear interaction of internal gravity waves as described by the Garrett & Munk spectrum. In order to reach turbulent regimes dominated by stratification we use the Coriolis facility in Grenoble (France) which large size enables us to reach regimes with both low Froude number and large Reynolds number. Stratification is obtained by using vertically linearly varying salt concentration and we force large scale waves in a $6\times6\times 1$ m$^3$ domain. We perform time-resolved PIV to probe the space-time structure of the velocity field. We observe a wide band spectrum which is made of waves. Discrete modes are observed due to the square shape of the flow container as well as a continuum part which appears consistent with an axisymmetric superposition of random weakly nonlinear waves. Our observations support the interpretation of turbulence of a strongly stratified fluid as wave turbulence of internal waves although our spectrum is quite different from the Garrett & Munk spectrum. Weak turbulence proceeds down to a small cutoff length scale (the buoyancy wavelength) at which a transition to more strongly nonlinear turbulence is expected., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Fluids

The assumption that the elements of the cost matrix in the classical assignment problem are drawn independently from a standard Gaussian distribution motivates the study of a particular Gaussian field indexed by the symmetric permutation group. The correlation structure of the field is determined by the Hamming distance between two permutations. The expectation of the maximum of the field is shown to go to infinity in the same way as if all variables of the field were independent. However, the variance of the maximum is shown to converge to zero at a rate which is slower than under independence, as the variance cannot be smaller than the one of the cost of the average assignment. Still, the convergence to zero of the variance means that the maximum possesses a property known as superconcentration. Finally, the dimension of the set of near-optimal assignments is shown to converge to zero., Comment: 9 pages

Goodness-of-fit tests based on the empirical Wasserstein distance are proposed for simple and composite null hypotheses involving general multivariate distributions. For group families, the procedure is to be implemented after preliminary reduction of the data via invariance.This property allows for calculation of exact critical values and p-values at finite sample sizes. Applications include testing for location--scale families and testing for families arising from affine transformations, such as elliptical distributions with given standard radial density and unspecified location vector and scatter matrix. A novel test for multivariate normality with unspecified mean vector and covariance matrix arises as a special case. For more general parametric families, we propose a parametric bootstrap procedure to calculate critical values. The lack of asymptotic distribution theory for the empirical Wasserstein distance means that the validity of the parametric bootstrap under the null hypothesis remains a conjecture. Nevertheless, we show that the test is consistent against fixed alternatives. To this end, we prove a uniform law of large numbers for the empirical distribution in Wasserstein distance, where the uniformity is over any class of underlying distributions satisfying a uniform integrability condition but no additional moment assumptions. The calculation of test statistics boils down to solving the well-studied semi-discrete optimal transport problem. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate the practical feasibility and the excellent performance of the proposed tests for the Wasserstein distance of order p = 1 and p = 2 and for dimensions at least up to d = 5. We present a statistical analysis of the behavior of the kinetic energy spectrum in the dissipative range of scales of fully developed three-dimensional turbulence. We analyze spectra recorded in experiments of grid turbulence generated in the Modane wind tunnel, and spectra obtained from high-resolution direct numerical simulations of the forced Navier-Stokes equation. We focus on wave-number scales in the near-dissipative range. We find that in this domain, the spectra behave as a stretched exponential with an exponent $\alpha = 0.68 \pm 0.19$. This result corroborates previous DNS studies which found that the spectrum in the near-dissipative range is best modeled by a stretched exponential with $\alpha<1$. Moreover, we here give an estimate for the actual value of $\alpha$, which turns out to be in precise agreement with the theoretical prediction $\alpha=2/3$ from the non-perturbative renormalisation group., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The Lagrangian approach is natural to study issues of turbulent dispersion and mixing. We propose in this work a general Lagrangian stochastic model including velocity and acceleration as dynamical variables for inhomogeneous turbulent flows. The model takes the form of a diffusion process and the coefficients of the model are determined via Kolmogorov theory and the requirement of consistency with the velocity-based models. It is shown that the present model generalises both the acceleration-based models for homogeneous flows and the generalised Langevin models for the velocity. The resulting closed model is applied to a channel flow at high Reynolds number and compared to experiments as well as direct numerical simulations. A hybrid approach coupling the stochastic model with a Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) is used to obtain a self-consistent model, as commonly used in probability density function methods. Results highlight that most of the acceleration features are well represented, notably the anisotropy and the strong intermittency. These results are valuable, since the model allows to improve the modelling of boundary layers yet remaining relatively simple. The nonlinear dynamics of waves at the sea surface is believed to be ruled by the Weak Turbulence framework. In order to investigate the nonlinear coupling among gravity surface waves, we developed an experiment in the Coriolis facility which is a 13-m diameter circular tank. An isotropic and statistically stationary wave turbulence of average steepness of 10\% is maintained by two wedge wave makers. The space and time resolved wave elevation is measured using a stereoscopic technique. Wave-wave interactions are analyzed through third and fourth order correlations. We investigate specifically the role of bound waves generated by non resonant 3-wave coupling. Specifically, we implement a space-time filter to separate the dynamics of free waves (i.e. following the dispersion relation) from the bound waves. We observe that the free wave dynamics causes weak resonant 4-wave correlations. A weak level of correlation is actually the basis of the Weak Turbulence Theory. Thus our observations support the use of the Weak Turbulence to model gravity wave turbulence as is currently been done in the operational models of wave forecasting. Although in the theory bound waves are not supposed to contribute to the energy cascade, our observation raises the question of the impact of bound waves on dissipation and thus on energy transfers as well., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Fluids

We report on an experimental realization of a bi-directional soliton gas in a 34~m-long wave flume in shallow water regime. We take advantage of the fission of a sinusoidal wave to inject continuously solitons that propagate along the tank, back and forth. Despite the unavoidable damping, solitons retain adiabatically their profile, while decaying. The outcome is the formation of a stationary state characterized by a dense soliton gas whose statistical properties are well described by a pure integrable dynamics. The basic ingredient in the gas, i.e. the two-soliton interaction, is studied in details and compared favourably with the analytical solutions of the Kaup-Boussinesq integrable equation. High resolution space-time measurements of the surface elevation in the wave flume provide a unique tool for studying experimentally the whole spectrum of excitations., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We investigate experimentally turbulence of surface gravity waves in the Coriolis facility in Grenoble by using both high sensitivity local probes and a time and space resolved stereoscopic reconstruction of the water surface. We show that the water deformation is made of the superposition of weakly nonlinear waves following the linear dispersion relation and of bound waves resulting from non resonant triadic interaction. Although the theory predicts a 4-wave resonant coupling supporting the presence of an inverse cascade of wave action, we do not observe such inverse cascade. We investigate 4-wave coupling by computing the tricoherence i.e. 4-wave correlations. We observed very weak values of the tricoherence at the frequencies excited on the linear dispersion relation that are consistent with the hypothesis of weak coupling underlying the weak turbulence theory., Comment: proceedings of the Euromech-Ercoftac workshop "Turbulent Cascades II" organized in Ecole Centrale de Lyon in december 2017

We describe a technique of image analysis providing the time resolved shape of a water surface simultaneously with the three-component velocity field on this surface. The method relies on a combination of stereoscopic surface mapping and stereoscopic three-component Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV), using a seeding of the free surface by small polystyrene particles. The method is applied to an experiment of `weak turbulence' in which random gravity waves interact in a weakly non-linear regime. Time resolved fields of the water elevation are compared to the velocity fields on the water surface, providing direct access to the non-linear advective effects. The precision of the method is evaluated by different criteria: tests on synthetic images, consistency between several camera pairs, comparison with capacity probes. The typical r.m.s. error corresponds to 0.3 pixel in surface elevation and time displacement for PIV, which corresponds to about 0.3 mm or 1 \% in relative precision for our field of view 2 x 1.5 m$^2$.

The statistical properties of a large number of weakly nonlinear waves can be described in the framework of the Weak Turbulence Theory. The theory is based on the hypothesis of an asymptotically large system. In experiments, the systems have a finite size and the predictions of the theory may not apply because of the presence of discrete modes rather than a continuum of free waves. Our study focusses on the case of waves at the surface of water at scales close to the gravity-capillarity crossover (of order 1~cm). Wave turbulence has peculiar properties in this regime because 1D resonant interactions can occur as shown by Aubourg \& Mordant. Here we investigate the influence of the confinement on the properties of wave turbulence by reducing gradually the size of our wave tank along one of its axis, the size in the other direction being unchanged. We use space-time resolved profilometry to reconstruct the deformed surface of water. We observe an original regime of coexistence of weak wave turbulence along the length of the vessel and discrete turbulence in the confined direction., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Fluids
