- Abstract
This study analyzes the scientific profiles of doctorate holders who migrate in search of better job opportunities as a response to the increased temporariness and uncertainty of employment in their native country. Analyzing the career trajectories of the population of research-active Italian doctorate holders in economics, finance, and business management who graduated in the years 2008-2010, we find that those who are more likely to move abroad are those with the relatively best and worst research performances before migrating. Instead, those remaining in Italy are found to be on average of good scientific quality. Further, we find that the best performers target cross-border reputable universities for more prestigious careers, while the relatively lower performers generally move internationally to non-research-oriented institutions simply to look for an occupation. Migrant doctorate holders with average research performances do not differ from those staying in their native country. Our results have important policy implications as they contradict the popular belief that only the cream of the talented brains flee Italy.

8. Universities' Attractiveness to Students: The Darwinism Effect
- Author

- Abstract
Due to significant government cuts to Higher Education funding in Southern European systems, their already underfunded universities were forced to increasingly compete for students as sources of additional revenue. Concurrently, families and students that continued to afford participation in Higher Education became more selective when choosing a university, realising the riskier investment that Higher Education participation had become. Through a competing destinations model and relying on all Italian private and public universities, this study finds that the competition forces characterising universities' attractiveness over the last decade have changed since the financial crisis of 2008. In a context of lower demand for Higher Education, the competition for students grew and universities in close proximity were better prepared to face the new challenges, leading to the growth of Higher Education clusters.

9. The Relationship between Competition and Programmatic Diversification

- Abstract
In this study, we analyse the relationship between competition and programmatic diversification in 75 Italian universities from the academic years of 2003/2004 to 2011/2012. Results show that local competition, rather than national competition, influences programmatic diversification. The relationship between local competition and programmatic diversification is found to be quadratic such that when competition increases, diversification decreases and specialisation increases, and both relationships are reversed after a certain threshold. We argue that under moderate levels of competition, universities tend to respond to local competition for students by differentiating their programmatic offerings from their competitors. However, when the level of competition is minimum or extreme, universities tend to follow an isomorphic strategy. After the reduction in student demand and the reform of the higher education system in 2008/2009, the relationship was no longer curvilinear because universities operating in extremely competitive environments began to adopt more risk-taking behaviour by engaging in diversification strategies.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to explore the propensity of university students to use different sustainable transport modes, taking into account individual and specific trip characteristics, as well as students' psychological traits (i.e. attitudes). Design/methodology/approach: Using the transport mode preferences of 827 students who responded to a travel survey, a two-step analysis is conducted. The first step examines the effects of individual characteristics, travel experience and origin or destination features on students' stated preferences (i.e. self-selected values assigned to personal attitudes). The second step analyses students' travel mode choices, given their intrinsic mobility attitudes. Findings: The results suggest that informing students about environmental issues increases their propensity to use sustainable mobility, leading to an average decrease in private transport usage of 5.8 per cent. Interestingly, improving the public transport service and promoting sustainable transport mobility have different impacts on individual campus areas. For campuses located in the city centre and in the historical hamlet, improvements in public transport are found to decrease solo driving by 3.3 per cent and 5.3 per cent, respectively. In suburban areas, this value increases to 9.5 per cent. Originality/value: This work makes two contributions to the literature. First, it focuses on an unexplored setting, namely, that of a multi-campus university, with districts located in three different areas. This is used to explain how students are influenced by their travel experience and the cultural framework in which they are embedded. Second, the two-step analysis leads to a deeper understanding of the differences between attitudes and "intrinsic attitudes", and their relative influence on the preferred alternative.

11. Effects of the Financial Crisis on University Choice by Gender

- Abstract
This study analyses the university choices of male and female students in Italy over the 2003-2012 period and for two sub-periods before (2003-2008) and after (2009-2012) the 2008 financial crisis. The analysis is guided by human capital, signalling and preference theories and implemented through a competing destinations model that controls for the socio-economic features of both the region of origin and destination. The findings show that in the post-crisis period, males became more career-oriented in their university choices due to increasingly constrained and competitive labour markets. The constrained post-crisis labour markets led females to focus more on the educational experience than on future employability prospects. Our results suggest that the financial crisis maintained or even widened gendered social roles as they relate to university choices; specifically, males assumed an even greater career-centred family role, whereas females adopted more adaptive lifestyles that potentially place them at a disadvantage in the labour market and in society in years to come.

23. How can a Climate-Neutral Building Look Like?

- Abstract
The climate crisis is urging us to act fast. Buildings are a key leverage point to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but the embodied emissions related with their construction remain often the hidden challenge of any ambitious policy. Considering that a complete material substitution is not possible, we explore in this paper a material GHG compensation where fast-growing bio-based insulation materials are used to compensate building elements that necessarily release GHG. Looking for analogies with other human activities, different material diets as well as different building typologies are modelled to assess the consequences in term of bio-based insulation requirement to reach climate-neutrality. The material diets are defined according to the gradual use of herbaceous materials, from the insulation up to the structural level: omnivorous, vegetarian and vegan. Our results show the relationship in terms of volume between the climate intensive materials and the climate-negative ones needed to neutralize the overall building GHG emissions. Moreover, they suggest how climate-neutral building can look like and that it is possible to have climate-neutral buildings with wall thickness within the range of current construction practices.

24. A grid-based evolutionary spatial algorithm for airline service design in multi-airport systems

- Abstract
This paper proposes an integrated modeling framework to support airline frequency planning in a multi-airport system. First, a grid-based spatial model is developed to estimate passenger demand as a function of air-service characteristics (such as flight frequency and airfare) and ground accessibility. Second, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to provide decision support for the allocation of flights to airports belonging to the multi-airport system, subject to fleet availability, flow balance and operational requirements. We apply the proposed approach to model frequent flyer passengers departing from one of the major multi-airport systems in Europe. Our results show that the degree of diversification of a multi-airport system—i.e., the presence of alternative airports—plays a significant role on both the demand and supply sides, providing passengers with more diversified and accessible services and providing airlines with higher operational flexibility and resilience in case of disruptions. Our modeling framework can be extended to capture additional managerial objectives or practical requirements.

26. Yardstick Regulation in a Competitive Context? The Case of the Italian Airports
- Author

- Abstract
Over the past years, airport regulation has been generating a lot of interest in Europe, and despite the passing of Airport Charges Directive in 2009, there is ongoing debate on the need for introducing tighter airport regulations. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, acknowledging that regulation is usually applied in markets where competition is weak or absent, we evaluate the ex-ante need for price regulation in the air transport industry. By focusing on the Italian airport industry, our analysis provides evidence of a high level of competitive pressure faced by airports (both inside and outside the industry), suggesting that tighter price regulation may not be the optimal solution. Second, assuming that stricter regulation of the airport industry is necessary, we empirically investigate the applicability of yardstick regulation to the Italian airport system, outlining critical challenges and issues that may arise when applying benchmarking techniques in setting the optimum level of efficiency at regulated airports. According to current literature, applicability of empirical benchmarking techniques requires some basic research requirements to be met, such as high-quality data, a homogeneous production function, and a sufficient number of comparable observations. We find that both heterogeneity and the relatively small number of comparable airports, along with the complexity of gathering proper data, may compromise the applicability of a regulation scheme based on yardstick principles at the national level.

- Abstract
Unstable hemoglobins are caused by single amino acid substitutions in the HBB gene, often affecting key histidine residues, leading to protein destabilization and hemolytic crises. In contrast, long HBB variants, exceeding 20 bp, are rare and associated with a β-thalassemia phenotype due to disrupted α-β chain interactions. We describe a family wherein four of six members carry a novel 23-amino-acid in-frame duplication of HBB (c.176_244dup), named hemoglobin (Hb) Monza. Despite its length, this duplication manifests as an unstable hemoglobin variant rather than a β-thalassemia phenotype.

Self-connection has become an appealing alternative for passengers in the European air transportation market, along with the remarkable growth of the low-cost carriers (LCCs) network over the last decade. As the development of self-connectivity is not directly designed in airports and airlines' growth strategies, this study aims to deeply understand the evolution of self-connectivity options in the intra-European market over time. By implementing a quickest travel time approach, we analyse the number of quickest connections and the share of indirect quickest paths that remained un-managed in years 2006 and 2016. Results document that, overall, travelling in Europe has become faster (−5.7 min of weighted average), while European airports' coverage, that is, airport pairs that can be directly or indirectly connected, decreased from 65% to 53%. The strong increase in LCCs' seat capacity (74%) did not translate into a similar growth of indirect connections options. Due to LCCs' offer redistribution and traditional carriers' partial retreatment from the European market to concentrate on intercontinental destinations, 1-transfer managed or un-managed options available to passengers in Europe dropped by 9.5%, and the share of 1-transfer quickest paths achievable by self-connecting flights increased by only 3pp, from 66% in 2006 to 69% in 2016. This study investigates the price elasticity of demand in the European low-cost carrier (LCC) industry by analysing Internet fares for all easyJet flights departing from the Amsterdam Schiphol airport towards 21 European destinations between March and September 2015. Results suggest that the price elasticity of demand greatly varies across different dimensions, ranging from −0.535 for the business-oriented route of Hamburg to −1.915 for the leisure-oriented route of Split. Price elasticity is also found to be higher for reservations made more days in advance, for reservations and departures occurring on weekends, and for flights taking off during lunchtime and in the summer period. All results are consistent with the different behaviours of leisure and business passengers and the ongoing increase in the business component of the LCC passenger mix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work a multi-story residential building located in Cinisello Balsamo, near Milan, was considered as case study for the application of two new prefabricated building systems for the energy retrofit. The first one, developed within EASEE, a European project funded by 7 th Framework Program, consists in a preassembled insulated panel for the retrofit of facades, based on two TRC thin precast layers rigidly connected to an EPS core. The panels can be easily applied on the external side of existing facades without the use of scaffoldings, providing an additional efficient insulation as well a new external cladding. The second one consists in a preassembled timber panel for existing pitched roofs. The process includes the substitution of the existing roof with modular integrated panels with a high content of recycled materials that can be easily fixed on the existing structures (timber frames, concrete, masonry, etc.). The combination of the two prefabricated construction systems, applied on the case study, allowed the reduction of the building energy demand by 82%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Travelers' choices have been widely studied, and insights have been established on the values associated with different itinerary attributes. This paper extends the current literature by including a novel determinant of air travelers' behavior—that is, the extent to which a connecting itinerary is marketed and handled by an operating carrier. By relying on a stated preference survey, we collect passengers' preferences and analyze them by means of a latent class choice model accounting for both service-related and individual characteristics. Individual characteristics comprise attitudes derived from a factor analysis performed on attitudinal responses toward travel, namely anxiety and timeliness and quality. The results reveal that individuals who care more about timeliness and quality are less sensitive to price, more sensitive to time, and more likely to opt for a nonstop alternative. Additionally, the value assigned to handled connections is considerable (higher for anxious travelers). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Italy is among the few countries where open-access rail competition exists, and the entry of the newcomer NTV during 2012 radically changed the market conditions. The aim of this paper is to shed some light on the effect of competition on price strategies. To do that, we focused on the period before and after the opening of a new HS direct service between Milano and Ancona. Through a web crawler, we collected available fares, from 30 to 1 days in advance of departure and for 15 months, between September 2013 and December 2014. We statistically analysed the sample i) to estimate the price reactions of the incumbent after the new entry, and ii) to compare the price strategies of the two operators. Results show that the incumbent reduced economy class prices by about 15%. The newcomer is slightly cheaper for bookings well in advance of the departure date, but raises prices in the very last days before departure. Their fare strategy also changed after three months of operations, when they applied lower prices. Finally, we see that Trenitalia does not respond to NTV's prices, whereas the opposite is true, demonstrating that the newcomer is the price-taker in the short-run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is the first attempt to systematically investigate the phenomenon of base abandonments by low-cost carriers (LCCs) in the world, from 1997 to 2014. Our results identify 109 cases where the LCCs decreased their presence in airports by at least 50 per cent in terms of offered seats. In 28 cases, the LCCs completely abandoned the airports. The incidence of downsizing is significantly reduced for important base airports. The abandonment by LCCs can be reversed, even though this is not very likely; in only 7.3 per cent of cases the same LCCs recovered full capacity. The impact on airports of LCC abandonments depends on the carrier level of dominance. The presence of middle size alternative airports increases the likelihood of downsizings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper extends the literature on low-cost carriers' pricing strategies by investigating the presence of quantity price discrimination implemented through a two-part tariff in offered fares. By analysing Internet fares for all easyJet flights departing from the Amsterdam Schiphol airport between March and April 2015, we search for price differentials based on the number of seats booked by a single consumer. We find that the lowest average unit price is associated with a single consumer reserving 5 seats. On average, the per-seat discount for a single consumer reserving 5 seats is €9.48, which is 14% of the single-seat fare. Additionally, a multivariate analysis shows that quantity discounts are greater for flights with a larger fraction of available seats at the time of booking, the seats are booked longer in advance, and the destination's gross domestic product per capita is greater. Conversely, quantity discounts are lower for longer routes, larger destination airports, and routes for which easyJet's market share is higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are an established method for assessing the predictive capacity of a continuous biomarker for a binary outcome. However, in some cases, outcomes are time dependent. Although the literature has proposed packages for performing ROC analysis of time-independent outcomes, a package is not yet available for analyzing the predictive capacity of continuous biomarkers when the binary outcome is time dependent. In this article, we present stroccurve, a new command for performing ROC analysis within a survival framework.

39. The turnaround tactic and on-time performance: Implications for airlines' efficiency.

- Abstract
Schedule padding is a frequent strategy applied by transport providers, often used to improve their on-time performance. Normally, time efficiency is evaluated in terms of arrival delays. However, in the air transport industry, evidence shows that flights tend to depart late, although arriving on time. This study investigates the carriers' turnaround time strategy by comparing the scheduled and actual daily movements of all flights from or to Europe in 2019. Results show that turnaround variations are more frequent in larger airports, during peak hours, and when an aircraft performs a higher number of flights. Low-cost carriers usually set a significantly shorter turnaround time than traditional carriers, using a larger part of the scheduled block time for ground operations. This strategy greatly influences on-time performance measures and other efficiency indicators traditionally based on scheduled activities, with important implications for both airlines and passengers. 40. Competitive vs. monopolistic routes: Are fares so different?

- Abstract
Many different carriers operating on the same route is usually regarded as a signal of a competitive setting and, therefore, as a situation potentially beneficial for customers in terms of lower prices. This is obviously true if the argument involves a comparison between different market forms given the level of demand. Across different routes, however, the number of carriers depends also on the level of demand for each particular pair of destinations, so that we cannot assume a priori that fares per kilometre on “monopolistic” routes are higher than on more “competitive” ones. We study the price policy during 2008 of the two main European low cost carriers, Ryanair and easyJet, with reference to one hundred of the least, and one hundred of the most, dense routes among those operated by the two carriers respectively. The systematic occurrence of higher (for Ryanair), or at least no lower (for easyJet), average prices on competitive routes if compared with prices on routes with a single carrier by the same airline, surprising as it may be, supports the conclusion that a low level of demand is sufficient to impose low fares to some extent irrespective of the degree of competition. 42. EasyJet pricing strategy: determinants and developments

- Abstract
We analysed the pricing policy of easyJet, the second largest low-cost carrier in Europe, using fare data for all easyJet flights from 2007 to 2012. For each flight, we determined the average fare per kilometre and advance booking discounts (ABDs) within a 90-day period before departure. By applying a panel methodology, we show that average fares tended to be lower, with larger discounts for advance booking, when easyJet dominated departure or arrival airports. Direct and indirect competition significantly reduced average fares and increased discounts for advance booking. Fares increased and ABDs decreased with easyJet's experience with specific routes. Other things being equal, the analysis also showed that easyJet reduced the average discount for advance booking during the period.

44. The impact of airport competition on technical efficiency: A stochastic frontier analysis applied to Italian airport.

Abstract: We investigate how the intensity of competition among airports affects their technical efficiency by computing airports’ markets on the basis of a potential demand approach. We find that the intensity of competition has a negative impact on airports’ efficiency in Italy from 2005 to 2008. This implies that airports belonging to a local air transportation system where competition is strong exploit their inputs less intensively than do airports with local monopoly power. Further, we find that public airports are more efficient than private and mixed ones. Hence, policy makers should provide incentives to implement airports’ specialization in local systems where competition is strong and monitor the inputs’ utilization rate even when private investors are involved. 45. Low-cost pricing strategies in leisure markets.

Abstract: The practice of dynamic pricing typical of low-cost carriers is generally regarded as a form of price discrimination between “leisure” and “business” travellers on a single flight or route. The same may not be true across different routes because of the different incidence of business travellers. If price increases in the 15 days prior to departure are meant to discriminate business demand, leisure demand should account for earlier price variations. In the present study, we used a database containing the daily fare over the 3 months prior to each flight operated by easyJet during 2009. For each route, we defined the “leisure index” as the difference between the price rates of change during the 90 days and 15 days prior to departure. Overall, “business” routes had lower average prices per km, while “leisure” routes showed less dynamic price behaviour, with higher minimum and lower maximum prices per km. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper analyzes cases of de-hubbing in air transport between 1997 and 2009. It initially addresses the conditions to be met for airports to be identified as de-hubbing cases. Second, it examines what happens after de-hubbing by clustering the cases into homogenous groups that show that, on average, airports that experienced de-hubbing did not recover their original traffic within five years and that de-hubbing is likely to be irreversible. When hub carriers were replaced at least partially by low-cost carriers, airports on average recovered faster. De-hubbing adversely affects the number of destinations served less severely than the seats offered by carriers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper analyzes the question of whether Ryanair''s pricing strategies have changed over time. We create a panel dataset of fares for all of Ryanair''s European flights over a two-year period, from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2007. We calculate the average fare over a 90-day period prior to departure and the intensity of dynamic pricing for each flight in the panel, in particular analysing the changes in these variables observed between pairs of “equivalent” flights. Our results show that overall, both average fares and the intensity of dynamic pricing decreased in 2007. More than one-third of flights saw a price reduction of more than 10%. Now that it has become the dominant low-cost carrier in Europe, Ryanair appears to be softening its dynamic pricing activities on existing routes, typically employed to stimulate additional touristic demand. Thus, booking in advance becomes relatively more expensive. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We analyse the pricing policy adopted by Ryanair, the main low-cost carrier in Europe. Based on a year''s fare data for all of Ryanair''s European flights, using a family of hyperbolic price functions, the optimal pricing curve for each route is estimated. The analysis shows a positive correlation between the average fare for each route and its length, the frequency of flights operating on that route, and the percentage of fully booked flights. As the share of seats offered by the carrier at the departure and destination airports increases, fares tend to decrease. The correlation of dynamic pricing to route length and the frequency of flights is negative. Conversely, as competition increases discounts on advance fares rise. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper investigates the connectivity of the European air transportation network. A time-dependent minimum path approach is employed to calculate the minimum travel time between each pair of airports in the network, inclusive of flight times and waiting times. The connectivity offered by each alliance''s network is compared with that of the overall network. The results show that roughly two-thirds of the fastest indirect connections are not operated by the alliance system; this could be exploited to enable a new passenger strategy of “self-help hubbing”. - Abstract
This article presents analysis of air service levels and competition dynamics in the transatlantic market before and after the EU-US Open Skies Agreement (OSA) signed in 2008. By comparing direct and connecting flights in a typical off-peak week, we investigate whether the EU-US OSA has led to more choices for transatlantic travelers. We examine the impact of the EU-US OSA on competition between carriers, alliances, and hub airports. The results show that the number of direct transatlantic connections and served airport pairs decreased and only indirect competition increased.
