Search

Pulsar timing at the Mt Pleasant observatory has focused on Vela, which can be tracked for 18 hours of the day. These nearly continuous timing records extend over 24 years allowing a greater insight into details of timing noise, micro glitches and other more exotic effects. In particular we report the glitch parameters of the 2004 event, along with the reconfirmation that the spin up for the Vela pulsar occurs instantaneously to the accuracy of the data. This places a lower limit of about 30 seconds for the acceleration of the pulsar to the new rotational frequency. Milliarcsecond-accurate radio positions in the International Celestial Reference Frame for 34 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. The positions are derived from Mark III/IV very long baseline interferometry observations made between 2004 August and 2006 April using radio telescopes located in Australia, South Africa, and Hawaii. Positions for 7 of the 34 sources have been reported previously by us but are reported here with significantly improved accuracy. These results supplement an ongoing project to increase the sky density of southern hemisphere sources in order to better define the International Celestial Reference Frame and to provide additional phase reference sources with accurate positions for use in astrophysical observations. Positions for all 34 sources are south of δ = -20° (positions for nine of the sources are south of δ = -60°) and have average formal uncertainties of 0.23 mas in α cos δ and 0.35 mas in δ.

The first successful geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations to Antarctica were made on baselines from Syowa Station (Antarctica) to Tidbinbilla (Australia) and to Kashima (Japan) in January 1990. Regular geodetic experiments started in 1998 with the installation of a permanent VLBI terminal at Syowa Station. These observations are conducted at the standard geodetic VLBI frequencies of 2.3 and 8.4 GHz, S- and X-Bands. In the first year, the 11-m multipurpose antenna at Syowa Station observed together with the 26-m radio telescope of the University of Tasmania in Australia and the 26-m radio telescope of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory in South Africa. From 1999, the experiments were expanded to also include the O’Higgins Station in Antarctica, Fortaleza in Brazil and Kokee on Hawaii. From 1999 until the end of 2003, 25 observing sessions have been reduced and analyzed using the CALC/SOLVE geodetic VLBI data reduction package. The results show that the horizontal baseline of Syowa-Hobart is increasing at the rate of 57.0±1.9 mm/year. The baseline Syowa-Hartebeesthoek is also increasing, but at the lower rate of 9.8±1.9 mm/year. The VLBI result of 2.0±3.1 mm/year and the GPS result of −1.9±0.7 mm/year for the Syowa-O’Higgins horizontal baseline support the hypothesis of one rigid Antarctic plate without intra-plate deformation, which is consistent with the NNR-NUVEL-1A global plate motion model. The location of the Euler pole of the Antarctic plate by VLBI is estimated as 59.7°S and 62.6°E with a rotation rate of 0.190 deg/Myr, while that by GPS in our study is estimated as 60.6°S and 42.2°E with a rotation rate of 0.221 deg/Myr. These pole positions are slightly different to that implied by the NNR-NUVEL-1A model of 63.0°S and 64.2°E with a rotation rate of 0.238 deg/Myr. VLBI observations over a longer time span may resolve small discrepancy of current plate motion from the NNR-NUVEL-1A model. The consistency of the VLBI coordinates with the GPS coordinates at Syowa Station, after correction for the local tie vector components between the two reference markers, is also discussed.

Interstellar scintillation has been conclusively demonstrated to be the principal cause of the intraday variability (IDV) observed in the centimeter-wavelength emission of many active galactic nuclei. A few sources show large amplitude modulation in their flux density on a timescale of hours. However, the majority of IDV sources exhibit variability on timescales of a day or more. Some sources have been found to show an annual cycle in the pattern of their variability. Such an annual cycle occurs because the relative speeds of the Earth and the interstellar medium change as the Earth orbits the Sun. To search for these annual variations, as well as to follow the source evolution, requires a dedicated instrument; the necessary amounts of observing time are beyond the capability of the National Facility instruments. Here we describe the scientific motivation for and present an outline of the COSMIC (Continuous Single-Dish Monitoring of Intraday Variability at Ceduna) project, which uses the University of Tasmania's 30 m diameter radio telescope at Ceduna, which has been monitoring the flux density of a number of the stronger southern scintillators at 6.65 GHz since 2003 March.

Milliarcsecond-accurate radio positions for 25 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. These positions are derived from Mark III Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations made between 2003 September and 2004 May on the intra-Australia baseline connecting Hobart, Tasmania and Parkes, New South Wales. The results presented here represent an ongoing program intended to increase the number of phase-reference sources with accurate positions in the southern hemisphere for use in astrophysical observations. The positions for all but 1 of the 25 sources are south of δ = -45° and have average formal uncertainties of 3 mas in α cos δ and 2 mas in δ. As the reported positions are in the frame of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF), the results reported here can also be used to increase the sky density of southern hemisphere ICRF sources, although with reduced accuracy.

We present 8.4 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 69 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources in the International Celestial Reference Frame. These are the first in a series of observations intended to image all such sources at milliarcsecond resolution in order to determine their continued suitability for reference-frame use based on intrinsic structure. We use the resultant images to calculate a core fraction, that is, the ratio of core flux density to total flux density, for all observed sources. The resulting distribution, with a mean value of 0.83, suggests that most sources are relatively compact. However, just over half the observed sources show significant extended emission in the form of multiple compact components. These sources are probably poorly suited for high-accuracy reference-frame use unless intrinsic structure and potential variability can be taken into account. Our observations represent the first large, comprehensive VLBI imaging survey in the southern hemisphere, significantly extending the existing limited VLBI surveys and, along with some well-known objects, containing many sources that have never been imaged at milliarcsecond resolution. The overlap with Very Long Baseline Array images of sources between 0° and -35° declination helps determine the limits to imaging with the southern hemisphere–accessible telescopes.

Milliarcsecond-accurate radio positions for 22 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. These positions are derived from Mark III very long baseline interferometry observations made between 2003 February and 2003 August. The results presented here supplement an ongoing project to increase the sky density of southern hemisphere sources in order to better define the International Celestial Reference Frame and to provide additional phase-reference sources with accurate positions for use in astrophysical observations. The positions for all 22 sources are south of δ = -30° (positions for 10 of the sources are south of δ = -60°) and represent the largest group of new milliarcsecond-accurate astrometric positions for sources in this declination range since the initial definition of the International Celestial Reference Frame. The reported positions have average formal uncertainties of 0.5 mas in right ascension and 0.6 mas in declination.

We report observations of the microstructure of 7 pulsars at 102 MHz with a time resolution of up to 1 μs. We have detected fine pulse structure with a μs time-scale for all seven pulsars. We observe that interstellar scattering does not broaden the μs time-scale pulsar microstructure, and find structure of a time-scale much shorter than the interstellar scatter broadening. In addition to the previously known structure with time-scale τ μ of tens of μs, we have detected structures with characteristic time-scale of a few μs, nearly equal to the reciprocal of the analysis bandwidth. This suggests that even shorter micropulses may exist. Micropulses usually cluster in groups, each of duration tens to hundreds of μs, which may be identified as microstructure observed previously with smaller time resolution. In addition to the previously known quasi-periodicity of hundreds of milliseconds, we reveal a structures with characteristic period of tens of μs. We observe structures with short quasi-periodicity to have a limited bandwidth. The characteristic period P μ of these structures in PSR B0950+08 does not have a common value for different frequency regions in the same single pulse. Scattering was revealed as a train of quasi-periodic micropulses with an exponentially damped envelope. The scatter-broadening and decorrelation bandwidth were measured. We report two time-scales of decorrelation bandwidth of pulsar PSR B0950+08 and propose two branches of Δv d (v) dependence. The dispersion measure of PSR B0950+08 as DM = 2.9686 ′ 0.0001 pc cm - 3 has been determined.

We present the first VLBI maps of H2O maser emission (lambda 1.3cm) in the nucleus of the Circinus Galaxy, constructed from data obtained with the Australia Telescope Long Baseline Array. The maser emission traces a warped, edge-on accretion disk between radii of 0.11+/-0.02 and ~0.40 pc, as well as a wide-angle outflow that extends up to ~1 pc from the estimated disk center. The disk rotation is close to Keplerian (v varies as 1/sqrt(r)), the maximum detected rotation speed is 260 km/s, and the inferred central mass is 1.7+/-0.3 x 10^6 solar masses. The outflowing masers are irregularly distributed above and below the disk, with relative outflow velocities up to ~+/-160 km/s, projected along the line of sight. The flow probably originates closer than 0.1 pc to the central engine, possibly in an inward extension of the accretion disk, though there is only weak evidence of rotation in the outward moving material. We observe that the warp of the disk appears to collimate the outflow and to fix the extent of the ionization cone observed on larger angular scales. Flux density monitoring data at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz is presented for a sample of 33 southern hemisphere GPS sources, drawn from the 2.7 GHz Parkes survey. This monitoring data, together with VLBI monitoring data, shows that a small fraction of these sources, ∼10%, vary. Their variability falls into several categories: sources whose spectral classification is, at best, ephemeral on a timescale of years; sources with a stable GPS classification that vary, but retain their classification; and a small number of sources that exhibit interstellar scintillation, but that maintain a mean GPS spectrum. Existing data on GPS sources with higher frequency peaks, ≥3 GHz, reveals that many such sources vary. However, the majority of these sources possess a GPS spectrum only during outbursts, and hence should perhaps be classified as ephemeral GPS sources. In addition, significant levels of circular polarisation have been found in a number of GPS sources, both amongst the variables and non-variables. Remarkable amongst these is PKS 1519–273, which possesses strong and variable circular polarisation, and which exhibits IDV in all Stokes parameters.

We present images from VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) observations of 14 compact extragalactic southern hemisphere radio sources, including a description of the observations, the data reduction techniques, and the parameters of the resulting images and model fits. These images provide the highest resolution information to date for many of these objects. Comparisons are made between VSOP and previous ground-based VLBI results, including images from data extracted from the geodetic VLBI archive at the United States Naval Observatory. From the VSOP data, we find that the two radio galaxies observed have lower peak brightness temperatures than the 12 quasars. Also, these data show (1) no evidence for obvious differences between the brightness temperature distributions of gamma-ray-loud and gamma-ray-quiet radio-loud active galactic nuclei and (2) no evidence for obvious correlations between brightness temperature and spectral index, radio polarization, flux density, or month timescale modulation index. These results are consistent with previous work by Lister, Tingay, & Preston, who found that the only observable significantly correlated with VSOP-derived brightness temperature is intraday variability, which is strongly correlated with many relativistic beaming indicators. For one source, PKS 1127-145, we undertake a detailed investigation of the milliarcsecond-scale component positions as a function of time, taking data from the literature and the current work, to estimate proper motions. As a result, we suggest that two components previously reported as stationary, C1 and C2, have apparent transverse speeds of (9.1 ± 3.8) and (5.3 ± 2.3) h-1c, respectively. We also make the first investigation of the apparent motion in the nearest GHz-peaked spectrum radio galaxy, PKS 1718-649, finding an upper limit on the apparent separation speed of 0.08c. Comparison of geodetic VLBI and VSOP data show no significant detection of component motion in PKS 0208-512, (2.4 ± 3.1) h-1c, and only a tentative detection in PKS 0537-441, (2.8 ± 2.2) h-1c. A significant detection of component motion is found in PKS 1610-771, solely from the geodetic VLBI data, (9.4 ± 3.5) h-1c.

We are undertaking an observational program using the ATCA to monitor the intraday variability (IDV) of a sample of sources at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz. The sources were selected to include the known strong southern IDV sources plus a number of sources whose IDV was recently discovered. The present monitoring program will extend over a full year in order to search for any annual cycle that may be present in the long-term IDV characteristics of these sources. In this paper we discuss the observing strategy and data analysis, and present the first results from our observations.

The first VLBI images of H2O maser emission in the Circinus Galaxy AGN show both a warped, edge-on accretion disk and an outflow 0.1 to 1 pc from the central engine. The inferred central mass is 1.3 × 106 M⊙, while the disk mass may be on the order of 105 M⊙, based on a nearly Keplerian rotation curve. The bipolar, wide-angle outflow appears to contain “bullets” ejected from within < 0.1 pc of the central mass. The positions of filaments and bullets observed in the AGN ionization cone on kpc-scales suggest that the disk channels the flow to a radius of ∼ 0.4 pc, at which the flow appears to disrupt the disk.

The VSOP mission is a Japanese-led project to image radio sources with sub-milliarcsec resolution by correlating the signal from the orbiting 8-m telescope, HALCA, with a global array of telescopes. Twenty-five percent of the scientific time of this mission is devoted to a survey of 402 bright, small-diameter extra-galactic radio sources at 5 GHz. The major goals of the VSOP Survey are statistical in nature: to determine the brightness temperature and approximate structure; to provide a source list for use with future space VLBI missions; and to compare radio properties with other data throughout the EM spectrum. This paper describes: the compilation of a complete list of radio sources associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN); the selection of the subsample of sources to be observed with VSOP; the extensive ground resources used for the Survey; the status of the observations as of 2000 July; the data-analysis methods; and several examples of results from the VSOP Survey. More detailed results from the full sample will be given in future papers.

We present 21-cm HI line and 13-cm continuum observations, obtained with the Australian Long Baseline Array, of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063. This object appears to be one of the best examples of Seyfert galaxies where shocks produced by the radio plasma jet influence both the radio as well as the near-infrared emission. The picture resulting from the new observations of IC 5063 confirms and completes the one derived from previous Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) lower resolution observations. A strong interaction between the radio plasma ejected from the nucleus and a molecular cloud of the ISM is occurring at the position of the western hot spot, about 0.6 kpc from the active nucleus. Because of this interaction, the gas is swept up, forming, around the radio lobe, a cocoon-like structure where the gas is moving at high speed. Due to this, part of the molecular gas is dissociated and becomes neutral or even ionised if the UV continuum produced by the shocks is hard and powerful enough. The main component detected in the VLBI HI absorption profile has a central velocity of 2786 km/s and is therefore blue-shifted 614 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity. Its peak optical depth is 5.4 %. The corresponding column density of the detected absorption, for a spin temperature of 100 K, is N_HI ~ 2x10^21 atoms cm^-2. The HI absorption properties observed in IC 5063 appear different from those observed in other Seyfert galaxies, where the HI absorption detected is attributed to undisturbed foreground gas associated with the large-scale galaxy disk., Comment: To appear in May issue of AJ; LateX, 5 Postscript figures

We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of the core emission from a nearby bright FR II radio galaxy, Pictor A, revealing its parsec-scale jet structure and evolution for the first time. These data constitute a significant addition to our knowledge of powerful radio galaxies on the smallest scales, effectively doubling the number studied at this resolution. The jet, 14 h-1 pc in projected extent, is directed west of the core for the first 5 h-1 pc and then appears to bend approximately 40° to the north. Apparent motions for three of the five parsec-scale jet components have been estimated, 0.5 ± 0.4, 1.1 ± 0.5, and 0.4 ± 0.7 h-1c, indicating that subluminal motion is likely. No parsec-scale counterjet has been detected, allowing only lower limits on the jet-to-counterjet surface brightness ratio to be estimated. Two models, one describing the apparent 40° bend in the parsec-scale jet as an intrinsic deflection of the jet and one describing it as the effect of jet precession, may each be plausible and should be testable with future VLBI observations. By adopting the jet deflection model to describe the apparent 40° bend, we estimate that the Pictor A jet is initially inclined to our line of sight by less than 51°. Comparing this result with VLBI observations of Cygnus A suggests that, while the components in both jets are consistent with at least mildly relativistic speeds, the Pictor A jet lies significantly closer to our line of sight than the Cygnus A jet. This conclusion is consistent with both the parsec-scale radio structures and the kiloparsec-scale orientations of the host galaxies as well as the "unified model" interpretation of the optical spectra from these two objects.

We present measurements of the size of the Vela pulsar in 3 gates across the pulse, from observations of the distribution of intensity. We calculate the effects on this distribution of noise in the observing system, and measure and remove it using observations of a strong continuum source. We also calculate and remove the expected effects of averaging in time and frequency. We find that effects of variations in pulsar flux density and instrumental gain, self-noise, and one-bit digitization are undetectably small. Effects of normalization of the correlation are detectable, but do not affect the fitted size. The size of the pulsar declines from 440 +/- 90 km (FWHM of best-fitting Gaussian distribution) to less than 200 km across the pulse. We discuss implications of this size for theories of pulsar emission.

The Space VLBI mission, VSOP, involves the participation of 15 countries with up to 40 radio telescopes spread across the Earth observing in close coordination with the 8 m radio telescope on board the Japanese spacecraft HALCA (Hirabayashi, 1998, and this Proceedings). This paper describes the contributions to the mission's success from Southern Hemisphere radio telescopes, facilities and Institutes.

We are using the VSOP spacecraft, HALCA, together with ground-based telescopes, to image six strong GPS sources with compact double structure. Space-ground baselines are needed to achieve the resolution to accurately measure component sizes at the frequency of the spectral peak, an essential requirement in distinguishing between free-free and synchrotron self absorption emission mechanisms. Many of the components of these sources are only just beginning to show signs of any internal structure on the longest Earth baselines and space VLBI is the only technique that permits investigation of their most compact structure at the frequency of the spectral peak.

We describe the expected distribution of intensity for a scintillating source of finite size observed through a scattering medium, including systematic and instrumental effects. We describe measurements of the size of the Vela pulsar, using this technique.

We show that in many methanol maser sources the masers are located in lines, with a velocity gradient along them which suggests that the masers are situated in edge-on circumstellar, or protoplanetary, disks. We present VLBI observations of the methanol maser source G309.92+0.48, in the 12.2 GHz transition, which confirm previous observations that the masers in this source lie along a line. We show that such sources are not only linear in space but, in many cases, also have a linear velocity gradient. We then model these and other data in both the 6.7 GHz and the 12.2 GHz transition from a number of star formation regions, and show that the observed spatial and velocity distribution of methanol masers, and the derived Keplerian masses, are consistent with a circumstellar disk rotating around an OB star. We consider this and other hypotheses, and conclude that about half of these methanol masers are probably located in edge-on circumstellar disks around young stars. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make high-resolution images of the 6.7-GHz 51 → 60A+ maser transition of methanol towards 33 sources in the Galactic plane. Including the results from 12 methanol sources in the literature, we find that 17 out of 45 sources have curved or linear morphology. Most of the 17 have a velocity gradient along the line, which is consistent with masers lying in an edge-on circumstellar disc surrounding a massive star. We also made simultaneous continuum observations of the sources at 8.6 GHz, in order to image any associated H II region. 25 of the sources are associated with an ultracompact H II region, with a detection limit of ∼0.5 mJy beam-1. We argue that the methanol sources without an associated H II region represent less massive embedded stars, not an earlier stage in the lifetime of the star, as previously suggested.

We present VLBI and Australia Telescope Compact Array images and derive source-frame radio-core brightness temperatures for three prominent, flat-spectrum extragalactic radio sources, notable because they have not been detected as gamma-ray sources with the EGRET instrument. Radio-core brightness temperatures are discussed as an indicator of relativistic beaming. A comparison of source-frame radio-core brightness temperatures for EGRET-identified and gamma-ray-quiet, radio-loud AGNs shows that a wide range in beaming properties is likely to exist, independent of the level of gamma-ray emission. This comparison suggests that, although there is a strong relationship between radio emission and gamma-ray emission in EGRET-identified AGNs, and many EGRET-identified AGNs show evidence for relativistic beaming, there is little evidence for a one-to-one correspondence between the strength of gamma-ray emission and the degree of beaming of the radio emission.

We report the results of a 5-GHz southern-hemisphere snapshot VLBI observation of a sample of blazars. The observations were performed with the Southern Hemisphere VLBI Network plus the Shanghai station in 1993 May. Twenty-three flat-spectrum, radio-loud sources were imaged. These are the first VLBI images for 15 of the sources. Eight of the sources are EGRET (> 100 MeV) gamma-ray sources. The milliarcsecond morphology shows a core-jet structure for 12 sources, and a single compact core for the remaining 11. No compact doubles were seen. Compared with other radio images at different epochs and/or different frequencies, 3 core-jet blazars show evidence of bent jets, and there is some evidence for superluminal motion in the cases of 2 blazars. The detailed descriptions for individual blazars are given. This is the second part of a survey: the first part was reported by Shen et al. (AJ 114(1997)1999).

The subparsec-scale structure of Cen A is complex, consisting of a bright jet and a fainter counterjet. The bright jet contains components that have subluminal speeds of approximately 0.1c and undergo irregular episodes of rapid internal evolution. The rapid evolution sometimes observed could be interpreted as evidence for an underlying jet flow much faster (>0.45c) than observed from the proper motion of components (~0.1c). Considering the large-scale morphology of the source, the motions and temporal variations in the jet, and the detection of a counterjet, we conclude that the axis of the Cen A jet lies between ~50? and ~80? to our line of sight. We find that the estimated times of component ejection from the compact core are reasonably coincident with enhancements in hard X-ray intensity and 22 GHz flux density. In the context of the radio galaxy population, Cen A is a low-luminosity FR I?type source and in general has the properties observed in other FR I radio galaxies. Overall, the observations of Cen A presented here, and from other investigations, are consistent with the idea that sources with an FR I appearance are not aligned with our line of sight and have relativistic flow on the subparsec scale. The apparently subluminal subparsec-scale jet components are interpreted as being slow patterns on the relativistic flow.

Pulse arrival-time measurements made during the period 1987-1994 at the Mt Pleasant Observatory have revealed the first observed glitch in PSR B1727-47 and a continuation of the known high glitch rate in PSR B1737-30. The observations also show an unusual sequence of alternating microjumps in the rotation rate of PSR B1240-64 and the possibility of free precession in PSR B0959-54. The observations and results are discussed in terms of current neutron star theories. © 1997 RAS.

We use interstellar scattering of the Vela pulsar to determine the size of its emission region. From interferometric phase variations on short baselines, we find that radio-wave scattering broadens the source by 3.4+/-0.3 milliarcseconds along the major axis at position angle 81+/-3 degrees. The ratio of minor axis to major axis is 0.51+/-0.03. Comparison of angular and temporal broadening indicates that the scattering material lies in the Vela-X supernova remnant surrounding the pulsar. From the modulation of the pulsar's scintillation on very short baselines, we infer a size of 500 km for the pulsar's emission region. We suggest that radio-wave refraction within the pulsar's magnetosphere may plausibly explain this size.

Power spectra of the timing noise observed in 18 southern pulsars have been derived using a novel technique, based on the CLEAN algorithm. Most of the spectra are well described by a single- or double-component power-law model. Some of these spectra can be interpreted in the context of one or more of the current timing noise models. The results combined with those obtained from the time-domain analyses of the timing activity in these pulsars are used to assess the viability of the various theoretical models of pulsar timing noise.

Polarimetric data are presented for a total of 82 (mostly southern) pulsars at observing frequencies of 800 MHz (18 pulsars) and 950 MHz (82 pulsars). 32 of the sources were observed using a high-speed integrator with milliperiod resolution. For many of the pulsars observed, there is no published polarimetry and, for most, these observations constitute the only data between 630 and 1612 MHz. Faraday rotation measurements for 24 pulsars are also presented. Most of the pulsars examined show properties that are readily explicable in terms of core and conal components. Notable results include integrated profile mode-changing identified for the first time in PSR B1358 - 63, confirmation of high inclinations between magnetic and rotation axes in the interpulsars PSR B1055 - 52 and PSR B1702 - 19, and significant rotation measure changes in PSR B1556 - 44 and PSR B1727 - 47. © 1997 RAS.

On 27 July 1994 the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory detected an outburst of high energy X-rays from a previously unknown source in the constellation Scorpius. This source was designated GRO J1655-40. Approximately 12 days after the start of the X-ray outburst, a strong outburst of radio emission occurred. Here we present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of GRO J1655-40 made with an array of telescopes in Australia, South Africa, and the western United States. These observations show that the radio source which appeared two weeks after the initial X-ray outburst consisted of two prominent components which separated with an apparent speed of 1.5 ± 0.4c. When the various possibilities for the geometry of the radio source are taken into account the apparent speed implies an intrinsic speed between 0.5c and 0.9c. Our results and those of other investigators imply a strong link between the accretion of material onto a highly compact object and the ejection of relativistic components of radio emission.

The new Australian geodetic VLBI network operated by the University of Tasmania (UTAS) started regular observations in June, 2011. Three 12-m “Patriot” radio telescopes (Hobart in Tasmania, Yarragadee in Western Australia and Katherine in the Northern Territory) are dedicated to the improvement of the celestial and terrestrial reference frames in the southern hemisphere. We present first results from the analysis of a 16-month set of geodetic VLBI data. The data were processed within a VLBI solution for 78 sessions in 2011–2012 by the least squares collocation method using the OCCAM software. The geodetic positions of the AuScope radio telescopes were estimated with accuracy less than 10 mm, and the first sign of their motion due to tectonic plate movement was indicated. Results of independent verification using GPS and geodetic local tie for Hobart12 showed consistency within 20 mm for all three components. Positions of Hobart12 in the ITRF2005 system are presented for the 2012.0 epoch.

The AuScope geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry array consists of three new 12 m radio telescopes and a correlation facility in Australia. The telescopes at Hobart (Tasmania), Katherine (Northern Territory) and Yarragadee (Western Australia) are co-located with other space geodetic techniques including Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and gravity infrastructure, and in the case of Yarragadee, Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) facilities. The correlation facility is based in Perth (Western Australia). This new facility will make significant contributions to improving the densification of the International Celestial Reference Frame in the Southern Hemisphere, and subsequently enhance the International Terrestrial Reference Frame through the ability to detect and mitigate systematic error. This, combined with the simultaneous densification of the GNSS network across Australia will enable the improved measurement of intraplate deformation across the Australian tectonic plate. In this paper we present a description of this new infrastructure and present some initial results, including telescope performance measurements and positions of the telescopes in the International Terrestrial Reference Frame. We show that this array is already capable of achieving centimetre precision over typical long-baselines and that network and reference source systematic effects must be further improved to reach the ambitious goals of VLBI2010., Journal of Geodesy, March 2013

New H I absorption measurements made towards six pulsars are presented. Kinematic distance limits are derived for five of them. Mean line-of-sight electron densities are estimated using the dispersion measures of the pulsars. Temperatures are derived for the cold absorbing H I clouds from the amount of absorption seen in the observed pulsar spectra.

Spectral analysis of the residual pulsearrival times of pulsars is a useful tool in understanding the nature of the underlying processes that may be responsible for the timing noise observed from pulsars. Power spectra of pulsar timing residuals may be described by one or a combination of powerlaws. As these spectra are expected to be very steep, it is important to ensure a high dynamic range in the estimation of the spectrum. This is difficult in practice since one is, in general, dealing with timing measurements made at unevenly placed epochs. In this paper, we present a technique based on, ‘CLEAN’ to obtain high dynamic range spectra from unevenly sampled data. We compare the performance of this technique with other techniques including some that were used earlier for estimation of power spectra of pulsar timing residuals.
