Abstract

Abstract Aims Hypertonic saline solution (HSS) plus intravenous (IV) loop diuretic appears to enhance the diuretic response in patients hospitalized for heart failure (HF). The efficacy and safety of this therapy in the ambulatory setting have not been evaluated. We aimed to describe the design and baseline characteristics of the SALT‐HF trial participants. Methods and results ‘Efficacy of Saline Hypertonic Therapy in Ambulatory Patients with HF’ (SALT‐HF) trial was a multicenter, double‐blinded, and randomized study involving ambulatory patients who experienced worsening heart failure (WHF) without criteria for hospitalization. Enrolled patients had to present at least two signs of volume overload, use ≥ 80 mg of oral furosemide daily, and have elevated natriuretic peptides. Patients were randomized 1:1 to treatment with a 1‐h infusion of IV furosemide plus HSS (2.6–3.4% NaCl depending on plasmatic sodium levels) versus a 1‐h infusion of IV furosemide at the same dose (125–250 mg, depending on basal loop diuretic dose). Clinical, laboratory, and imaging parameters were collected at baseline and after 7 days, and a telephone visit was planned after 30 days. The primary endpoint was 3‐h diuresis after treatment started. Secondary endpoints included (a) 7‐day changes in congestion data, (b) 7‐day changes in kidney function and electrolytes, (c) 30‐day clinical events (need of IV diuretic, HF hospitalization, cardiovascular mortality, all‐cause mortality or HF‐hospitalization). Results A total of 167 participants [median age, 81 years; interquartile range (IQR), 73–87, 30.5% females] were randomized across 13 sites between December 2020 and March 2023. Half of the participants (n = 82) had an ejection fraction >50%. Most patients showed a high burden of comorbidities, with a median Charlson index of 3 (IQR: 2–4). Common co‐morbidities included diabetes mellitus (41%, n = 69), atrial fibrillation (80%, n = 134), and chronic kidney disease (64%, n = 107). Patients exhibited a poor functional NYHA class (69% presenting NYHA III) and several signs of congestion. The mean composite congestion score was 4.3 (standard deviation: 1.7). Ninety per cent of the patients (n = 151) presented oedema and jugular engorgement, and 71% (n = 118) showed lung B lines assessed by ultrasound. Median inferior vena cava diameter was 23 mm, (IQR: 21–25), and plasmatic levels of N‐terminal‐pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) and antigen carbohydrate 125 (CA125) were increased (median NT‐proBNP 4969 pg/mL, IQR: 2508–9328; median CA125 46 U/L, IQR: 20–114). Conclusions SALT‐HF trial randomized 167 ambulatory patients with WHF and will determine whether an infusion of hypertonic saline therapy plus furosemide increases diuresis and improves decongestion compared to equivalent furosemide administration alone.

2. Universal Anomaly Detection at the LHC: Transforming Optimal Classifiers and the DDD Method

Abstract

In this work, we present a novel approach to transform supervised classifiers into effective unsupervised anomaly detectors. The method we have developed, termed Discriminatory Detection of Distortions (DDD), enhances anomaly detection by training a discriminator model on both original and artificially modified datasets. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of our models on the Dark Machines Anomaly Score Challenge channels and a search for 4-top quark events, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach across various final states and beyond the Standard Model scenarios. We compare the performance of the DDD method with the Deep Robust One-Class Classification method (DROCC), which incorporates signals in the training process, and the Deep Support Vector Data Description (DeepSVDD) method, a well established and well performing method for anomaly detection. Results show that the effectiveness of each model varies by signal and channel, with DDD proving to be a very effective anomaly detector. We recommend the combined use of DeepSVDD and DDD for purely unsupervised applications, with the addition of flow models for improved performance when resources allow. Findings suggest that network architectures that excel in supervised contexts, such as the particle transformer with standard model interactions, also perform well as unsupervised anomaly detectors. We also show that with these methods, it is likely possible to recognize 4-top quark production as an anomaly without prior knowledge of the process. We argue that the Large Hadron Collider community can transform supervised classifiers into anomaly detectors to uncover potential new physical phenomena in each search.

Abstract

Magnetic microrobots have been developed for navigating microscale environments by means of remote magnetic fields. However, limited propulsion speeds at small scales remain an issue in the maneuverability of these devices as magnetic force and torque are proportional to their magnetic volume. Here, we propose a microrobotic superstructure, which, as analogous to a supramolecular system, consists of two or more microrobotic units that are interconnected and organized through a physical (transient) component (a polymeric frame or a thread). Our superstructures consist of microfabricated magnetic helical micromachines interlocked by a magnetic gelatin nanocomposite containing iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). While the microhelices enable the motion of the superstructure, the IONPs serve as heating transducers for dissolving the gelatin chassis via magnetic hyperthermia. In a practical demonstration, we showcase the superstructure's motion with a gradient magnetic field in a large channel, the disassembly of the superstructure and release of the helical micromachines by a high-frequency alternating magnetic field, and the corkscrew locomotion of the released helices through a small channel via a rotating magnetic field. This adaptable microrobotic superstructure reacts to different magnetic inputs, which could be used to perform complex delivery procedures within intricate regions of the human body.

Abstract

In this contribution to the 2021 Snowmass community planning exercise that informs the American strategy for particle physics, we present the prospects for measurements of the top-quark couplings at future colliders. Projections are presented for the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider and a future Higgs/electroweak/top factory electron-positron collider. Abstract

The African School of Fundamental Physics and Applications, also known as the African School of Physics (ASP), was initiated in 2010, as a three-week biennial event, to offer additional training in fundamental and applied physics to African students with a minimum of three-year university education. Since its inception, ASP has grown to be much more than a school. ASP has become a series of activities and events with directed ethos towards physics as an engine for development in Africa. One such activity of ASP is the African Conference on Fundamental and Applied Physics (ACP). The first edition of ACP took place during the 2018 edition of ASP at the University of Namibia in Windhoek. Abstract

Recent measurements at the Large Hadron Collider allow for a robust and precise characterisation of the electro-weak interactions of the top quark. We present the results of a global analysis at next-to-leading order precision including LHC, LEP/SLD and Tevatron data in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We include a careful analysis of the impact of correlations among measurements, as well as of the uncertainties in the Effective Field Theory setup itself. We find remarkably robust global fit results, with central values in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and 95% probability bounds on Wilson coefficients that range from $\pm$ 0.35 to $\pm$ 8 TeV$^{-2}$. This result represents a considerable improvement over previous studies, thanks to the addition of differential cross-section measurements in associated production processes of top quarks and neutral gauge bosons.

Abstract

The present study compares two protocols for ovarian controlled stimulation in terms of number of cumulus-oocyte complexes and metaphase II oocytes. We employed a single injection of 150mcg of corifollitropin alfa after a 7-day oral contraceptive pill-free interval for TAIL group and a conventional administration of corifollitropin alfa after a 5-day OCP-free interval with additional rFSH from 8th of ovarian controlled stimulation. Prospective, randomized, comparative, non-inferiority, opened and controlled trial carried out in 180 oocyte donors 31 were excluded, 81 were randomized to the control group and 68 to the TAIL group. No differences were found in the number of follicles larger than 14 and 17 mm at triggering day. However, a lower number of cumulus-oocyte complexes and metaphase II oocytes were obtained in TAIL group compared to the control group, expressed as median (interquartile range): 10.5 (5.5–19) vs. 14 [11–21] and 9 (4–13) vs. 12 (9–17) respectively. Additionally, the incidence of failed retrieval or metaphase II oocytes = 0 was higher in TAIL group 7(10.3%) vs. 1(1.2%) p = 0.024. The use of a single injection of corifollitropin alfa after a 7-day oral contraceptive pill-free interval in oocyte donors resulted in a lower number of cumulus-oocyte complexes and metaphase II oocytes. Abstract

Objective: Our main goal was to describe the general characteristics and demographic data of myelomeningocele (MMC) patients at Mnazi Mmoja Surgical NED Institute (MMSNI) in Zanzibar and to assess the clinical characteristics and medium-term result-impact of the implemented health care measures. Methods: This is a retrospective study on 41 MMC patients treated at the MMSNI in Zanzibar (Tanzania) from September 2016 to September 2018. Patient demographics, prenatal care, clinical and radiographic characteristics, surgical management and nursing care, and clinical outcomes were abstracted. Results: The mean age of the patients was 6.1 ± 4.6 days, and 53.7% were males. A total of 51.2% came from Zanzibar, 39% to Pemba, and 9.8% from mainland Tanzania. Maternal ultrasound checkups revealed hydrocephalus in 18.7% of the cases. 85.4% of the newborns were operated on. Surgical wound infection was the most frequent complication (28.6%). A significantly higher risk of complications was observed in children from Pemba Island (p = 0.046) and those born by vaginal delivery (p = 0.694), particularly infections. During follow-up, 48.57% of the patients presented with infantile hydrocephalus and in the majority of them, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was inserted. Conclusions: Proper prenatal care with early diagnosis, together with the neurosurgical and nursing standard of care in a specialized institution, are all essential to increase the chances of successful treatment of newborns harboring MMC and is one of the main goals pursued in the MMSNI, as the only referral public health center with locally trained health personnel in Zanzibar archipelago.

Abstract

The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. Abstract

The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, was a success achieved with only a percent of the entire dataset foreseen for the LHC. It opened a landscape of possibilities in the study of Higgs boson properties, Electroweak Symmetry breaking and the Standard Model in general, as well as new avenues in probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Six years after the discovery, with a conspicuously larger dataset collected during LHC Run 2 at a 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy, the theory and experimental particle physics communities have started a meticulous exploration of the potential for precision measurements of its properties. This includes studies of Higgs boson production and decays processes, the search for rare decays and production modes, high energy observables, and searches for an extended electroweak symmetry breaking sector. This report summarises the potential reach and opportunities in Higgs physics during the High Luminosity phase of the LHC, with an expected dataset of pp collisions at 14 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 ab$^{-1}$. These studies are performed in light of the most recent analyses from LHC collaborations and the latest theoretical developments. Abstract

Proposing a novel hybrid uniform theory of diffraction-physical optics (UTD-PO) formulation, we develop a method to calculate the E-plane radiation pattern of corrugated E-plane rectangular horn antennas with rectangular corrugations. We derive the technique from the estimation of the total field that reaches the emitting source (a magnetic current line), thereby assuming the impingement of a plane wave above the horn (reciprocity is applied). To validate our method, we compare the performance of the UTD-PO analysis with that of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) solved using the method of moments (MoM). Our method shows improved computational efficiency over EFIE and other numerical techniques that fully discretize the geometry.

Abstract

For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS detector at CERN, the current ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced with the ATLAS Inner Tracker. The ATLAS Inner Tracker will be an all-silicon detector, consisting of a pixel tracker and a strip tracker. Sensors for the ITk strip tracker are required to have a low leakage current up to bias voltages of -700 V to maintain a low noise and power dissipation. In order to minimise sensor leakage currents, particularly in the high-radiation environment inside the ATLAS detector, sensors are foreseen to be operated at low temperatures and to be manufactured from wafers with a high bulk resistivity of several k{\Omega} cm. Simulations showed the electric field inside sensors with high bulk resistivity to extend towards the sensor edge, which could lead to increased surface currents for narrow dicing edges. In order to map the electric field inside biased silicon sensors with high bulk resistivity, three diodes from ATLAS silicon strip sensor prototype wafers were studied with a monochromatic, micro-focused X-ray beam at the Diamond Light Source. For all devices under investigation, the electric field inside the diode was mapped and its dependence on the applied bias voltage was studied. The findings showed that the electric field in each diode under investigation extended beyond its bias ring and reached the dicing edge.

Abstract

In this work we showcase the potential of peptides as versatile scaffolds for quantum computing and molecular spintronics. In particular, we focus on lanthanide-binding tags, which were originally developed in the field of biotechnology for the study of protein structure and dynamics. Firstly, we demonstrate quantum coherent oscillations in a Neodymium peptidic qubit. Then, employing bacterial biosynthesis, we investigate the possibility of increasing the number of qubits in the same molecular system, with the case studies being a double spin qubit with two distinct coordination environments, and an asymmetric chain of 9 spin qubits with a spin-spin separation of about 2 nm and in an arbitrarily chosen sequence of coordination environments. Finally, we take advantage of biochemical modification for the preparation of paramagnetic, chiral, Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111).Our experimental and theoretical characterization shows that this is a promising structure for spintronic applications, and in particular to improve on two state-of-the-art approaches to molecular spin qubits. Abstract

In this study, we combined machine learning and remote sensing techniques to estimate the value of chlorophyll-a concentration in a freshwater ecosystem in the South American continent (lake in Southern Chile). In a previous study, nine artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms were tested to predict water quality data from measurements during monitoring campaigns. In this study, in addition to field data (Case A), meteorological variables (Case B) and satellite data (Case C) were used to predict chlorophyll-a in Lake Llanquihue. The models used were SARIMAX, LSTM, and RNN, all of which showed generally good statistics for the prediction of the chlorophyll-a variable. Model validation metrics showed that all three models effectively predicted chlorophyll as an indicator of the presence of algae in water bodies. Coefficient of determination values ranging from 0.64 to 0.93 were obtained, with the LSTM model showing the best statistics in any of the cases tested. Abstract

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Resumo O crescimento da área irrigada no Cerrado afeta o volume de água captado nas bacias hidrográficas, influenciando diretamente na disponibilidade e alocação dos recursos hídricos. Em bacias com predominância da agricultura irrigada, torna-se fundamental a compreensão da variação espaço-temporal da evapotranspiração real de uma cultura (ETR), para o mais assertivo planejamento e gerenciamento dos reservatórios. Considerando o potencial de cultivo do trigo no Cerrado, o estudo tem por objetivo estimar a demanda hídrica da cultura nas safras de 2018 e 2019, por meio dos modelos SEBAL e SSEBop. Em comparação com o método da razão de Bowen, o SEBAL apresentou variações de R2 entre 0,86 e 0,72, tendo seu desempenho classificado como satisfatório. O RMSE determinado foi de 0,50 mm d−1 em 2018 e de 0,42 mm d−1 em 2019. O modelo SSEBop expressou melhor desempenho nas duas safras, com variabilidade de R2 entre 0,95 e 0,78, representando de forma mais adequada a ETR com RMSE menor, de 0,25 mm d−1 e 0,41 mm d−1, respectivos aos ciclos de 2018 e 2019. A configuração simplificada do SSEBop e o bom desempenho nas condições verificadas, tornam o modelo uma ferramenta apropriada, podendo contribuir para um planejamento hídrico eficiente na região.

Descobertas recentes sobre a atividade do gene quimérico BCR/ABL têm auxiliado na elucidação de diversos mecanismos envolvidos na gênese e progressão da leucemia mieloide crônica (LMC). Apesar de a LMC ser ainda, uma doença incurável para os pacientes que não podem submeter-se a um transplante alogênico de medula óssea, a sobrevida geral tem aumentado progressivamente, devido especialmente a medidas capazes de prolongar a fase crônica. A técnica de reação da polimerase em cadeia (PCR) para a detecção do gene quimérico BCR/ABL tem sido um teste bastante valioso para a identificação de casos Philadelphia negativos que apresentam o rearranjo genético ao nível molecular e para a detecção de doença residual mínima, especialmente em indivíduos transplantados. Novas formas de tratamento devem traduzir-se em maior sobrevida nos próximos anos quando utilizadas em estágios precoces da doença: transplante autólogo de células-tronco com células mobilizadas e coletadas após quimioterapia em altas doses, o uso de interferon e a terapia gênica. O interferon já é a droga de escolha para o tratamento da maioria dos pacientes. O transplante autólogo é um procedimento promissor que tem sido aplicado por vários centros como uma alternativa ao transplante alogênico. Os resultados de diferentes estratégias de terapia gênica têm sido desapontadores até o momento, mas a melhoria tecnológica neste campo do conhecimento será extremamente interessante para o tratamento da LMC, considerando-se o papel biológico central do gene BCR/ABL nas células malignas.

Abstract

The world’s water ecosystems have been affected by various human activities. Artificial intelligence techniques, especially machine learning, have become an important tool for predicting the water quality of inland aquatic ecosystems. As an excellent biological indicator, chlorophyll-a was studied to determine the state of water quality in Lake Llanquihue, located in southern Chile. A 31-year time series (1989 to 2020) of data collected in situ was used to determine the evolution of limnological parameters at eight spaced stations covering all of the main points of the lake, and the year, month, day, and hour time intervals were selected. Using machine learning techniques, out of eight estimation algorithms that were applied with real data to estimate chlorophyll-a, three models showed better performance (XGBoost, LightGBM, and AdaBoost). The results for the best models show excellent performance, with a coefficient of determination between 0.81 and 0.99, a root-mean-square error of between 0.03 ug/L and 0.46 ug/L, and a mean bias error of between 0.01 and 0.27 ug/L. These models are scalable and applicable to other lake systems of interest that present similar conditions and can support decision making related to water resources.

Abstract

Measurement and evaluation of soil erosion and consequent sediment yield are fundamental in the planning and management of watersheds, as they allow the identification of critical areas susceptible to erosive processes. This study analyzed the sediment yield generated by water erosion in the Indaia River Basin, Alto São Francisco, Minas Gerais, by using the SWAT hydrological model. From a regional/local scale, the initial simulation of the variables (flow and solid discharge) was performed on a monthly scale from 1988 to 2017. Then, parameter-sensitivity analysis, calibration, and validation of the model were executed. In the monthly calibration (1988 to 2007), the performance of the simulations for flow was R2=0.92 and NSE=0.91 and for total solid discharge R2=0.51 and NSE=0.50. In the monthly validation (2008 to 2017) for flow, R2=0.85 and NSE=0.82 was obtained and for total solid discharge R2=0.19 and NSE=0.16. Despite the unsatisfactory result in the validation stage, the model was able to analyze the distribution of sediment production by sub-basins or even by the Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU). Therefore, a sediment-yield map was generated which qualitatively indicated a tendency for greater erosive processes in the central portion of the basin. Abstract

The search for the production of the Higgs boson associated with a pair of top quarks in the ATLAS experiment is presented. It focuses on Higgs bosons decaying to $b\bar{b}$ and events containing two leptons (electrons and/or muons). It uses 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012. No significant excess of events is found and the 95% CL observed (expected) limit is 7.0xSM (4.3xSM). Abstract

Phytoplankton is considered a strong predictor of the environmental quality of lakes, while Chlorophyll-a is an indicator of primary productivity. In this study, 25 LANDSAT images covering the 2014–2021 period were used to predict Chlorophyll-a in the Villarrica lacustrine system. A Chlorophyll-a recovery algorithm was calculated using two spectral indices (FAI and SABI). The indices that presented the best statistical indicators were the floating algal index (R2 = 0.87) and surface algal bloom index (R2 = 0.59). A multiparametric linear model for Chlorophyll-a estimation was constructed with the indices. Statistical indicators were used to validate the multiple linear regression model used to predict Chlorophyll-a by means of spectral indices, with the following results: a MBE of −0.136 μ, RMSE of 0.055 μ, and NRMSE of 0.019%. All results revealed the strength of the model. It is necessary to raise awareness among the population that carries out activities around the lake in order for them to take policy actions related to water resources in this Chilean lake. Furthermore, it is important to note that this study is the first to address the detection of algal blooms in this Chilean lake through remote sensing.

An extensive ophthalmological examination, including multimodal imaging was carried out, which is of special interest as it is considered to be a rare syndrome.

Abstract

Durante a crise hídrica enfrentada pelo Distrito Federal em 2016/2017, as discussões sobre conflitos pelo uso da água revelaram o déficit de informações do governo acerca das bacias utilizadas como mananciais para o abastecimento público de água. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a oferta do serviço ecossistêmico de provisão de alimentos, estimar o consumo de água pela agricultura irrigada e analisar o consumo de água em diferentes cenários considerando a substituição dos sistemas de irrigação na bacia do Ribeirão Rodeador, importante região produtora de olerícolas e frutas no Distrito Federal. Para quantificar a provisão de alimentos, foram utilizados dados de produtividade média das culturas agrícolas e área cultivada obtida pela confecção do mapa de uso e cobertura da bacia. A estimativa do consumo de água pela irrigação foi calculada com dados de área irrigada mapeada e consumo médio de água das culturas agrícolas em diferentes sistemas de irrigação. Foram produzidos três cenários considerando a substituição do sistema de irrigação por aspersão convencional por sistemas de irrigação localizada. O fornecimento de alimentos na bacia foi quantificado em 43.039 t/ano, utilizando 1.683 ha. O consumo de água na irrigação foi estimado em 891 L/s, sendo 1.470 ha irrigados. O aumento de 20% na adoção de sistemas de irrigação localizada proporciona uma economia de 9,3% no consumo de água. O aumento de 40% na irrigação localizada proporciona uma economia de 18,7% e o aumento de 60% na irrigação localizada proporciona uma economia de 28,1% no consumo de água na irrigação.

Abstract

Abstract The prolonged lockdown of health services providing high-complexity fertility treatments –as currently recommended by many reproductive medicine entities– is detrimental for society as a whole, and infertility patients in particular. Globally, approximately 0.3% of all infants born every year are conceived using assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments. By contrast, the total number of COVID-19 deaths reported so far represents approximately 1.0% of the total deaths expected to occur worldwide over the first three months of the current year. It seems, therefore, that the number of infants expected to be conceived and born –but who will not be so due to the lockdown of infertility services– might be as significant as the total number of deaths attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. We herein propose remedies that include a prognostic-stratification of more vulnerable infertility cases in order to plan a progressive restart of worldwide fertility treatments. At a time when preventing complications and limiting burdens for national health systems represent relevant issues, our viewpoint might help competent authorities and health care providers to identify patients who should be prioritized for the continuation of fertility care in a safe environment.

Abstract

Water and sediment discharges can change rapidly, and low-frequency measurement devices might not be sufficient to elucidate existing dynamics. As such, above-water radiometry might enhance monitoring of suspended particulate matter (SPM) dynamics in inland waters. However, it has been barely applied for continuous monitoring, especially under partially cloudy sky conditions. In this study, an in situ, high-frequency (30 s timestep), above-water radiometric dataset, collected over 18 days in a tropical reservoir, is analyzed for the purpose of continuous monitoring of SPM concentration. Different modalities to retrieve reflectance spectra, as well as SPM inversion algorithms, were applied and evaluated. We propose a sequence of processing that achieved an average unsigned percent difference (UPD) of 10.4% during cloudy conditions and 4.6% during clear-sky conditions for Rrs (665 nm), compared to the respective UPD values of 88.23% and 13.17% when using a simple calculation approach. SPM retrieval methods were also evaluated and, depending on the methods used, we show that the coefficient of variation (CV) of the SPM concentration varied from 69.5% down to 2.7% when using a semi-analytical approach. As such, the proposed processing approach is effective at reducing unwanted variability in the resulting SPM concentration assessed from above-water radiometry, and our work paves the way towards the use of this noninvasive technique for high-frequency monitoring of SPM concentrations in streams and lakes.

Abstract

Purpose: This prospective registry study evaluated the feasibility of stereotactic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–guided radiation therapy for the local treatment of isolated prostate cancer recurrence within the gland or prostate bed after primary radiation therapy. Methods and Materials: Patients with isolated recurrence without any regional or distant extension after treatment by external radiation therapy of the prostate gland/bed or by prostate brachytherapy were included. A 173-second Fast Imaging with Steady state Precession (TrueFISP) sequence was used for MRI simulation, and the gross tumor volume was delineated using multimodal images. The initial treatment plan varied from 27.5 Gy in 5 fractions to 38.7 Gy in 9 fractions and was adapted at each session, if necessary. The primary endpoint was acute toxicities (according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v5.0 criteria). Secondary endpoints were the effects of the adaptive treatment on target volume coverage, late toxicities, and oncologic events. Results: Twenty patients were included. After a minimum follow-up of 6 months, grade 2 dysuria (from grade 1 at baseline; n = 1), grade 2 polyuria (n = 1), grade 1 urinary incontinence (n = 1), grade 1 urinary pain (n = 2), and grade 1 diarrhea (n = 1) were reported.All initial treatment plans met the tumor coverage objectives, with a mean 95% planning target volume value of 95.7%. No plan exceeded the bladder and rectum dose constraints, but 8 exceeded the urethra dose constraints because of urethra proximity to the planning target volume. The initial plan was adapted in 7 patients (35%). The tumor coverage improved by 3.7% compared with the predicted plan (P = .0001) without increase in the dose to organs at risk. The biochemical control rate for the whole cohort was 75% (15/20 patients) including the 4 patients who received androgen-deprivation therapy. Conclusions: MRI-guided reirradiation for isolated recurrence within the prostate or in the prostate bed appears to be safe with excellent dosimetric results.

Abstract

The diffuse attenuation coefficient of photosynthetically active radiation is an important inherent optical property of the subaquatic light field. This parameter, as a measure of the transparency of the medium, is a good indicator of water quality. Degradation of the optical properties of water due to anthropogenic disturbances is a common phenomenon in freshwater ecosystems. In this study, we used four algorithm-based Landsat 8 OLI and Sentinel-2A/B MSI images to estimate the diffuse attenuation coefficient of photosynthetically active radiation in Lake Villarrica located in south-central Chile. The algorithms’ estimated data from the ACOLITE module were validated with in situ measurements from six sampling stations. Seasonal and intralake variations of the light attenuation coefficient were studied. The relationship between the diffuse attenuation coefficient of photosynthetically active radiation, meteorological parameters, and an optical classification was also explored. The best results were obtained with QAA v6 KdPAR Nechad (R2 = 0.931, MBE = 0.023 m−1, RMSE = 0.088 m−1, and MAPE = 35.9%) for spring and QAA v5 Kd490 algorithms (R2 = 0.919, MBE = −0.064 m−1, RMSE = −0.09 m−1, and MAPE = 30.3%) for summer. High KdPAR values are associated with the strong wind and precipitation events suggest they are caused by sediment resuspension. Finally, an optical classification of freshwater ecosystems was proposed for this lake. The promising results of this study suggest that the combination of in situ data and observation satellites can be useful for assessing the bio-optical state of water and water quality dynamics in Chilean aquatic systems.

Introduction: The increase in life expectancy and the aging of the population are associated with an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases. Comorbidities have an important impact on prognosis and functional capacity leading to a progressive deterioration of autonomy and quality of life and an increase in demand for medical care. Establishment of an accurate prognosis constitutes one of the primary objectives in healthcare. An accurate estimate of prognosis helps clinicians make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, prevent iatrogenesis, and consider palliative care strategy as needed. It also allows the patient and family members to organize their preferences and priorities. Objective: To evaluate the PROFUND scale in patients with heart failure from a prognostic point of view. Methods: A multicenter cohort study including patients admitted for heart failure to internal medicine departments over a 6-month period will be carried out. Inclusion criteria are patients with a diagnosis of heart failure and at least two criteria of multipathological patients and NT-proBNP >1500 pg/ml upon admission. The PROFUND scale will be applied to all patients. Patients will be then stratified into four groups according to the PROFUND scale: low, moderate, moderate-high and high mortality risk. Conclusion: Our work is a prospective study that aims to apply the PROFUND scale to patients with heart failure in the hospital setting with the purpose of helping in decision-making with our patients, which could lead to improvements in the management of resources in our health system.

Abstract

Objective: Twisted uterus is detected when the body of the uterus is rotated from the cervical canal. This anomaly may be due to different causes, such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis or the presence of both. The study has aimed to compare the effect of the twisted uterus cause in terms of reproductive treatment outcomes. Materials and methods: It consisted of a retrospective study of twisted uterus cases with repeated implantation failure (more than three embryo transfers or four blastocysts transferred unsuccessfully) in our ultrasound department. The twisted uterus was defined when the vaginal probe needed to be rotated to assess the endometrial line thoroughly or when the coronal view was seen by 2D scan. From 2017 to 2020, 879 gynecological ultrasounds were performed. For statistical analysis, we carried out a logistical regression analysis adjusted by confounding factors. Results: From 145 patients included only 92 patients underwent reproductive treatments. With the known cause of uterine torsion. 56 patients with endometriosis, 18 with uterine myoma and the remaining 18 suffered from both. After assisted reproductive treatment, the endometriosis group showed the highest clinical pregnancy rate (53.57%) compared to myoma (22.22%) and endometriosis and myoma (38.89%) groups. Conclusion: Uterine myoma capable of causing uterine torsion may affect embryo implantation more than endometriosis. Prospective randomized studies with a larger number of patients would be needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

Abstract

Looking towards first LHC collisions, the ATLAS detector is being commissioned using the physics data available: cosmic rays and data taken during the LHC single beam operations at 450 GeV. During the installation of the ATLAS detector in the cavern, cosmic rays were collected with the different parts of the detector that were available. Abstract

Os dados acerca das características da população, normalmente divulgados pelo censo, são de suma importância, pois subsidiam inúmeros estudos sociais, econômicos e ambientais. Estes dados são agregados de maneira arbitrária, considerando a informação homogênea em um determinado espaço. Uma alternativa para contornar esse problema e gerar informação com qualidade espacial mais precisa é a utilização do mapeamento dasimétrico. O mapa dasimétrico utiliza dados auxiliares para refinar a representação da distribuição espacial da variável analisada. No decorrer das últimas décadas essa se tornou uma técnica bastante utilizada e diversos trabalhos foram realizados com diferentes abordagens metodológicas. Dessa forma, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o desempenho de três diferentes abordagens do mapeamento dasimétrico para a estimativa da população urbana do Distrito Federal. Para tanto, utilizou-se os modelos dasimétricos por ponderação de área (MD1), utilizando densidade relativa subjetiva (MD2) e o método dasimétrico inteligente (MDI) com a densidade relativa amostrada pelo método do centroide (MD3). Para a geração dos mapas foram utilizados dados do censo com o valor populacional em nível de subdistrito. O mapa de uso e cobertura utilizado possui resolução de 1m e foi modificado a partir do mapeamento de tipos de estruturas urbanas (UST) do DF, o qual classifica a área urbana em relação a sua homogeneidade considerando aspectos de funcionalidade, material de cobertura e características físicas. Para a avaliação dos métodos gerados utilizou-se métodos estatísticos e gráficos, utilizando como comparação a informação da população em nível de setores censitários. De acordo com as análises aplicadas o modelo que demonstrou o melhor desempenho foi o MD3, sendo esta técnica aplicada para o nível de informação de setores censitários como mapa final de estimativa da distribuição espacial da população urbana do DF.

Abstract

As propriedades dos solos são relacionadas com posições na paisagem. Isto implica em que as variáveis dos fatores de formação do solo, podem ser usadas para predizer atributos dos solos. A modelagem digital do relevo é uma das técnicas quantitativas melhor desenvolvidas para predizer atributos e classes de solos. As propriedades do solo estimadas podem ser usadas como dados de entrada em modelos de erosão hídrica e de transporte de sedimentos/nutrientes, risco de acidificação do solo e produtividade. Portanto, o trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar as relações entre propriedades do solo (teor de argila, carbono orgânico e espessura dos horizontes superficial e subsuperficial) e atributos do terreno, derivados de um Modelo Digital de Elevação (MDE) na Bacia do Rio Jardim, Distrito Federal. A partir do MDE carta, foram obtidos os atributos do terreno declividade, altitude, curvatura e índice topográfico de umidade (TWI) que juntamente com os dados das propriedades do solo de 24 perfis, foram submetidos à analise de regressão linear múltipla para a obtenção dos coeficientes utilizados para a geração de equações de predição dos atributos do solo. A declividade, a altitude e o TWI foram os atributos derivados do MDE que obtiveram uma maior associação com o teor de argila e carbono orgânico nos solos da Bacia do Rio Jardim. A influência da curvatura na predição do teor de argila e carbono orgânico foi pouco representativa, porém, na predição da espessura do horizonte superficial, a curvatura e a declividade obtiveram uma boa associação.

46. Influence of Climate and Land Cover/Use Change on Water Balance: An Approach to Individual and Combined Effects

Abstract

Land use/cover change (LUCC) and climate change (CC) affect water resource availability as they alter important hydrological processes. Mentioned factors modify the magnitude of surface runoff, groundwater recharge, and river flow among other parameters. In the present work, changes that occurred in the recent decades at the Quino and Muco river watersheds in the south-central zone of Chile were evaluated to predict future cover/use changes considering a forest expansion scenario according to Chilean regulations. In this way an expansion by 42.3 km2 and 52.7 km2 at Quino and Muco watersheds, respectively, was predicted, reaching a watersheds’ occupation of 35.4% and 22.3% in 2051. Additionally, the local climatic model RegCM4-MPI-ESM-MR was used considering periods from 2020–2049 and 2050–2079, under the RCP 8.5 scenario. Finally, the SWAT model was applied to assess the hydrological response of both watersheds facing the considered forcing factors. Five scenarios were determined to evaluate the LUCC and CC individual and combined effects. The results depict a higher sensitivity of the watersheds to CC impacts, where an increase of evapotranspiration, with a lessening of percolation, surface flow, lateral flow, and groundwater flow, triggered a water yield (WYLD) decrease in all predicted scenarios. However, when both global changes act synergistically, the WYLD decreases considerably with reductions of 109.8 mm and 123.3 mm at the Quino and Muco watersheds, respectively, in the most extreme simulated scenario. This water scarcity context highlights the necessity to promote land use management strategies to counteract the imminent effects of CC in the watersheds.

Abstract

Las tendencias climáticas observadas en todo el Caribe durante las últimas décadas, indican un aumento en la frecuencia e intensidad de la sequía. En Cuba existe un estrecho vínculo entre los eventos de sequía significativos con la influencia de fuertes sistemas anticiclónicos, que actúan desfavorablemente en el desarrollo de las lluvias de cualquier magnitud. De ahí la importancia de investigar cuánto llueve y con qué frecuencia e intensidad lo hace. Por tales razones, el presente trabajo analiza el comportamiento de la cantidad de días con lluvia total y por intervalos en el centro de Cuba, así como su posible relación con la ocurrencia de eventos significativos de sequía desde 1981 al 2010. Se utilizaron los softwares estadísticos Statgraphics 5.1 y Microsoft Office Excel 2016 para la obtención de la tendencia y parámetros estadísticos de los días con lluvia en 19 estaciones meteorológicas. La distribución espacial se realizó mediante el Sistema de Información Geográfico ArcGIS (v 2.14). El método de los deciles fue empleado para analizar los períodos con mayor déficit de días con lluvia y se relacionaron con variables meteorológicas, que reflejan la influencia de procesos atmosféricos en el desarrollo de la sequía, como las superficies Geopotenciales y Omega. Los resultados confirmaron mayor distribución de días con lluvia hacia el interior y zonas montañosas, con mayor concentración en los intervalos menores de 50 mm de precipitación, una tendencia creciente pero solo estadísticamente significativa para el intervalo de 0.1 mm a 10 mm y una gran relación entre los días con lluvia con períodos significativos de sequía.
