Excessive alcohol exposure can cause neurobehavioral deficits and structural alterations in the brain. Emerging research evidence suggests that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays an important role in alcohol-induced neurotoxicity. Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) is an ER stress inducible protein and is responsible to maintain ER homeostasis. MANF is highly expressed in both the developing and mature brain. We have previously shown that MANF deficiency exacerbated alcohol induced neurodegeneration and ER stress in the developing brain. However, little is known regarding the role of MANF in alcohol induced neuronal damage in the adult brain. In this study, we used a neuron-specific MANF knockout (KO) mouse model to investigate the effect of MANF deficiency on acute binge alcohol exposure-induced neurobehavioral deficits and ER stress. Adult male and female MANF KO mice and littermate controls received daily alcohol gavage (5 g/kg) for 10 days and then subjected to a battery of neurobehavioral tests including rotarods, balance beam, DigiGait, open field, elevated plus maze, Barnes maze, and three-chamber sociability task. Female MANF KO animals were more susceptible to alcohol-induced body weight loss. Alcohol exposure did not affect motor function, however female but not male MANF KO mice exhibited an increased locomotor activity in open field test. Learning and memory was not significantly impaired, but it was altered by MANF deficiency in females while it was affected by alcohol treatment in males. Both alcohol-exposed male and female MANF KO mice displayed increased sociability. Alcohol induced the expression of ER chaperones GRP78 and GRP94 and altered the levels of several unfolded protein response (UPR) and neuroinflammation markers in MANF KO mice in a sex-specific manner. The expression of MANF interacting proteins neuroplastin, PDIA1, and PDIA6 was increased in MANF KO mice, and was further induced by alcohol. In conclusion, alcohol exposure and neuronal MANF deficiency interacted to alter neurobehavioral outcomes, ER homeostasis and neuroinflammation in a sex-specific manner.

Abstract Plasmonic systems convert light into electrical charges and heat, mediating catalytic transformations. However, there is ongoing controversy regarding the involvement of hot carriers in the catalytic process. In this study, we demonstrate the direct utilisation of plasmon hot electrons in the hydrogen evolution reaction with visible light. We intentionally assemble a plasmonic nanohybrid system comprising NiO/Au/[Co(1,10-Phenanthrolin-5-amine)2(H2O)2], which is unstable at water thermolysis temperatures. This assembly limits the plasmon thermal contribution while ensuring that hot carriers are the primary contributors to the catalytic process. By combining photoelectrocatalysis with advanced in situ spectroscopies, we can substantiate a reaction mechanism in which plasmon-induced hot electrons play a crucial role. These plasmonic hot electrons are directed into phenanthroline ligands, facilitating the rapid, concerted proton-electron transfer steps essential for hydrogen generation. The catalytic response to light modulation aligns with the distinctive profile of a hot carrier-mediated process, featuring a positive, though non-essential, heat contribution.

Abstract Habitat loss and degradation are key drivers of the current biodiversity crisis. Most research focuses on the question of which traits allow species to persist in degraded habitats. We asked whether a species' trophic position or niche width influences the resilience of species in degraded habitats and to what extent habitat degradation affects trophic interactions between species. We used nitrogen isotope ratios (15N:14N, expressed as δ15N value) to quantify and compare trophic positions and niche widths of understory birds inhabiting old‐growth and young secondary forests in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica. We found that a species' trophic position rather than its trophic niche width determined its persistence in secondary forests. Species feeding at lower trophic levels in old‐growth forests were less likely to persist in secondary forests than those occupying a higher trophic position in old‐growth forests. This pattern is likely induced by the occurrence of relatively large‐bodied habitat specialists with a flexible and high‐trophic level diet in secondary forests. These habitat specialists likely caused generalist bird species to lower their trophic position relative to conspecifics in old‐growth forests. Regarding trophic niche widths, species in secondary forests tend to have larger niche widths than old‐growth forest species. However, as old‐growth forest specialists and generalists did not differ in their niche widths, no systematic effect of trophic niche width on species persistence after forest disturbance was found. This is the first study that shows a systematic effect of trophic position on the persistence of a wide range of bird species in a disturbed forest ecosystem. It therefore provides important insights into species' responses to habitat degradation and the conservation value of secondary forests. To improve habitat quality for old‐growth forest birds and facilitate avian seed dispersal, the creation of large contiguous forest patches should be prioritised when implementing reforestation measures.

BackgroundTraumatic spinal injury (TSI) is a disease of significant global health burden, particularly in low and middle-income countries where road traffic-related trauma is increasing. This study compared the demographics, injury patterns, and outcomes of TSI caused by road traffic accidents (RTAs) to non-traffic related TSI.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted using a neurotrauma registry from the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) in Tanzania, a national referral center for spinal injuries. Patient sociodemographic characteristics, injury level, and severity were compared across mechanisms of injury. Neurological improvement, neurological deterioration, and mortality were compared between those sustaining TSI through an RTA versus non-RTA, using univariable and multivariable analyses.ResultsA total of 626 patients were included, of which 302 (48%) were RTA-related. The median age was 34 years, and 532 (85%) were male. RTAs had a lower male preponderance compared to non-RTA causes (238/302, 79% vs. 294/324, 91%, pConclusionOur study in urban Tanzania finds no significant differences in outcomes between spinal injuries from road traffic accidents (RTAs) and non-RTA causes, suggesting the need for equitable resource allocation in spine trauma programs. Highlighting the critical link between cervical injuries and increased mortality, our findings call for targeted interventions across all causes of traumatic spinal injuries (TSI). We advocate for a comprehensive trauma care system that merges efficient pre-hospital care, specialized treatment, and prevention measures, aiming to enhance outcomes and ensure equity in trauma care in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract The modelling of electricity production and demand requires highly specific and comprehensive meteorological data. One challenge is the high temporal frequency as electricity production and demand modelling typically is done with hourly data. On the other side the European electricity market is highly connected, so that a pure country-based modelling is not expedient and at least the whole European Union (EU) area has to be considered. Additionally, the spatial resolution of the data set must be able to represent the thermal conditions, which requires high spatial resolution at least in mountainous regions. All these requirements lead to huge data amounts for historic observations and even more for climate change projections for the whole 21st century. Thus, we have developed the aggregated European wide climate data set SECURES-Met that has a temporal resolution of one hour, covers the whole EU area and other selected European countries, has a reasonable size but considers the high spatial variability.

Abstract Objective Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition that causes abnormal mucus secretions in affected organs. MUC5AC and MUC5B are gel-forming mucins and frequent targets for investigations in CF tissues. Our objective was to qualify MUC5AC and MUC5B immunohistochemical techniques to provide a useful tool to identify, localize and interpret mucin expression in ferret tissues. Results MUC5AC and MUC5B mucins were detected most commonly in large airways and least in small airways, consistent with reported goblet cell density in airway surface epithelia. We evaluated whether staining method affected the detection of goblet cell mucins in serial sections of bronchial surface epithelia. Significant differences between stains were not observed suggesting common co-expression MUC5AC and MUC5B proteins in goblet cells of airway surface epithelia. Gallbladder and stomach tissues are reported to have differential mucin enrichment, so we tested these tissues in wildtype ferrets. Stomach tissues were enriched in MUC5AC and gallbladder tissues enriched in MUC5B, mucin enrichment similar to human tissues. Mucin immunostaining techniques were further qualified for specificity using lung tissue from recently generated MUC5AC −/− and MUC5B −/− ferrets. Qualified techniques for MUC5AC and MUC5B immunohistochemistry will be useful tools for mucin tissue studies in CF and other ferret models.

Background People with very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using nocturnal non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure (CHRF) experience reduced exercise capacity and severe dyspnoea during exercise training (ET). The use of NIV during ET can personalise training during pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) but whether high-intensity NIV (HI-NIV) during exercise is accepted and improves outcomes in these extremely physically limited patients is unknown. The aim of this trial was to determine if ET with HI-NIV during PR was more effective than without at improving exercise capacity and reducing dyspnoea during exercise.Methods Patients with COPD, CHRF and nocturnal-NIV were randomised to supervised cycle-ET as part of PR with HI-NIV or without (control). Primary outcome was change in cycle endurance time (ΔCETtime), while secondary outcomes were dyspnoea at isotime during the cycle endurance test and during ET-sessions and for the HI-NIV group, post-trial preferred exercising method.Results Twenty-six participants (forced expiratory volume in 1 s 22±7%pred, PaCO251±7 mm Hg) completed the trial (HI-NIV: n=13, ET: IPAP 26±3/EPAP 6±1 cm H2O; control n=13). At completion of a 3 week ET-programme, no significant between-group differences in ΔCETtime were seen (HI-NIV-control: Δ105 s 95% CI (−92 to 302), p=0.608). Within-group ΔCETtime was significant (HI-NIV: +246 s 95% CI (61 to 432); control: +141 s 95% CI (60 to 222); all pminimal important difference (MID)101 s: n=53.8%) was the same in both groups for absolute ΔCETtime and 69.2% of control and 76.9% of the HI-NIV group had a %change>MID33%.Compared with control, the HI-NIV group reported less isotime dyspnoea (Δ−2.0 pts. 95% CI (−3.2 to −0.8), p=0.005) and during ET (Δ−3.2 pts. 95% CI (−4.6 to −1.9), p

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is maintained by self-renewing leukemic stem cells. Here the authors show that Heat Shock Transcription Factor 1 (HSF1) is specifically required for the maintenance of AML stem cells, while sparing steady-state and stressed haematopoiesis and that pharmacologically targeting HSF1 may have broad anti-leukemic effects.

Abstract Objective Inflammation is present in many diseases and identification of immune cell infiltration is a common assessment. CD138 (syndecan-1) is a recommended immunohistochemical marker for human plasmacytes although it is also expressed in various epithelia and tumors. Similarly, CD138 is a marker for murine plasmacytes, but its tissue immunostaining is not well-defined. Endogenous CD138 expression is an important confounding factor when evaluating plasmacyte infiltration. We studied two plasmacyte markers (CD138 and Kappa light chains) for endogenous immunostaining in five organs and one tumor from B6 mice. Results Plasmacytes in Peyer’s patches were positive for CD138 and Kappa markers without endogenous immunostaining. Endogenous CD138 immunostaining was widespread in liver, kidney, lung and a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) versus regionalized immunostaining in skin and small intestine wall. Endogenous Kappa immunostaining was absent in all tissues except for plasmacytes. Tissues with widespread endogenous CD138 immunostaining were contrasted by absence of endogenous Kappa immunostaining. Here, plasmacytes would not be distinguished by CD138, but would be obvious by Kappa immunostaining. Our study suggests that utility of immunostaining for plasmacytes by CD138 is tissue dependent in mice. Additionally, Kappa immunostaining may be a useful alternative in mouse tissues with confounding endogenous CD138 immunostaining.

Neuroinflammation is one of the main mechanisms leading to neuronal death and dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases. The role of microglia as primary mediators of inflammation is unclear in Leigh syndrome (LS) patients. This study aims to elucidate the role of microglia in LS progression by a detailed multipronged analysis of LS neuropathology, mouse and human induced pluripotent stem cells models of Leigh syndrome. We described brain pathology in three cases of Leigh syndrome and performed immunohistochemical staining of autopsy brain of LS patients. We used mouse model of LS (Ndufs4−/−) to study the effect of microglial partial ablation using pharmacologic approach. Genetically modified human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) derived neurons and brain organoid with Ndufs4 mutation were used to investigate the neuroinflammation in LS. We reported a novel observation of marked increased in Iba1+ cells with features of activated microglia, in various parts of brain in postmortem neuropathological examinations of three Leigh syndrome patients. Using an Ndufs4−/− mouse model for Leigh syndrome, we showed that partial ablation of microglia by Pexidartinib initiated at the symptom onset improved neurological function and significantly extended lifespan. Ndufs4 mutant LS brain organoid had elevated NLRP3 and IL6 pro-inflammatory pathways. Ndufs4-mutant LS iPSC neurons were more susceptible to glutamate excitotoxicity, which was further potentiated by IL-6. Our findings of LS human brain pathology, Ndufs4-deficient mouse and iPSC models of LS suggest a critical role of activated microglia in the progression of LS encephalopathy. This study suggests a potential clinical application of microglial ablation and immunosuppression during the active phase of Leigh syndrome.

Der Beitrag setzt sich mit einer politischen Aktion(sform) auseinander, mit der feministisch gegen das Verbot von Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen protestiert wurde. Die transnationale Aktionsform der kollektiven Busfahrten in die Niederlande wird dabei als (doppelsinnige) Freiheitsaktion und vier-dimensional ver-körperte Direkte Aktion im Sinne anarchistischer Selbsthilfe am bundesdeutschen Staat vorbei analysiert. Es handelte sich um eine frauenbewegte Handlungsoffensive machtvoller Gemeinschaftlichkeit, die, 1975 beginnend, solidarische Kollektivität und Öffentlichkeit als Strategie nutzte, um eine faktische Durchsetzung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts zu erwirken: In der Form der politischen Aktion wurde das Ziel selbst sichtbar gemacht (Konkretheit) und dieses unmittelbar durch die Abtreibungen erreicht (Implementierung). Empowernd schuf die Aktionsform selbstorganisierte Handlungsspielräume, wies dabei Angst und Scham zurück und delegitimierte das Gesetz. Nach einer reflexiven Kritik wurde die Aktionsform 1977 eingestellt. Resümierend werden die vorliegenden 11 Prinzipien einer Konzeption feministischen Widerstands um die Aktionsformaspekte feministische Reflexion und Solidarität erweitert.

Abstract The success of species invasions depends on multiple factors, including propagule pressure, disturbance, productivity, and the traits of native and non‐native species. While the importance of many of these determinants has already been investigated in relative isolation, they are rarely studied in combination. Here, we address this shortcoming by exploring the effect of the above‐listed factors on the success of invasions using an individual‐based mechanistic model. This approach enables us to explicitly control environmental factors (temperature as surrogate for productivity, disturbance, and propagule pressure) as well as to monitor whole‐community trait distributions of environmental adaptation, mass, and dispersal abilities. We simulated introductions of plant individuals to an oceanic island to assess which factors and species traits contribute to invasion success. We found that the most influential factors were higher propagule pressure and a particular set of traits. This invasion trait syndrome was characterized by a relative similarity in functional traits of invasive to native species, while invasive species had on average higher environmental adaptation, higher body mass, and increased dispersal distances, that is, had greater competitive and dispersive abilities. Our results highlight the importance in management practice of reducing the import of alien species, especially those that display this trait syndrome and come from similar habitats as those being managed.

In AQUACLEW (Advancing the QUAlity of CLimate services for European Water), a project funded by JPI Climate and the ERA-NET Consortium ‘European Research Area for Climate Services (ERA4CS), we examined different ways of improving the usability of existing Climate Services across Europe tackling key aspects in Climate Services improvement: user engagement, lack of resolution, uncertainties, and the need of an evaluation. The rationale of the project is based on an interactive process between service developers and users in seven study cases across Europe assessing the implications of Climate Service’ advancement in users’ decision-making process. A qualitative evaluation assessment allowed us to identify-four pillars when improving the quality of the climate services in the water sector: (1) Robustness, accounting for better quality of the service’ information in certain aspects; (2) Recruitment, understood as a need of involving users more actively in CS structures; (3) Reform, highlighting the possible need for changes in both the service structure and users mindsets; and (4) Reflection, as a process of continuous evaluation of the climate service during its life.

Abstract The purpose of this case report is to raise awareness of an extremely rare cause of limping, in young children. Clinicians should have a high index of suspicion of a possible cuboid fracture when evaluating a young child who presents with limping.

Early-late intermetallic phases have garnered increased attention recently for their catalytic properties. To achieve the high surface areas needed for industrially relevant applications, these phases must be synthesized as nanoparticles in a scalable fashion. Herein, Pt3Y-targeted as a prototypical example of an early-late intermetallic-has been synthesized as nanoparticles approximately 5-20 nm in diameter via a solution process and characterized by XRD, TEM, EDS, and XPS. The key development is the use of a molten borohydride (MEt3BH, M = Na, K) as both the reducing agent and reaction medium. Readily available halide precursors of the two metals are used. Accordingly, no organic ligands are necessary, as the resulting halide salt byproduct prevents sintering, which further permits dispersion of the nanoscale intermetallic onto a support. The versatility of this approach was validated by the synthesis of other intermetallic phases such as Pt3Sc, Pt3Lu, Pt2Na, and Au2Y.

Der Beitrag präsentiert kritisch-hermeneutische Rekonstruktionsergebnisse vor allem zu Handlungsmöglichkeiten und -strategien einer bekannten Berliner Subkulturaktivistin*: Lotte Hahm verknüpfte ihre ökonomische Selbstständigkeit mit kollektiver Selbstorganisierung (offene Klubstrukturen), gastronomischen Einrichtungen (Barbetrieb, Tanz, Kulturprogramm) mit dem Angebot von Beratung und politischer Bildung (Artikel, Vorträge, Bibliothek) sowie mit politischen Zielen wie Politisierung, Antidiskriminierung und (über)regionaler sowie transnationaler Vernetzung von Lesben und (homosexuellen) „Transvestiten“. Die Lokalnutzung baute sie zu exklusiv räumlicher Vergemeinschaftung sowie städtischer Verortung und Verankerung aus. Dabei entwickelte sie neben eigener politischer Programmatik eine offensive subkulturelle Werbestrategie, mit der sie sich als offene Lesbe und Weiblichkeitsnormen verweigernde Frau selbstermächtigend ins Bild rückte.

In this study we produce two urban development scenarios estimating potential urban sprawl and optimized development concerning building construction, and we simulate their influence on air temperature, surface temperatures and human thermal comfort. We select two heat waves representative for present and future conditions of the mid 21st century and simulations are run with the Town Energy Balance Model (TEB) coupled online and offline to the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). Global and regional climate change under the RCP8.5 scenario causes an increase of daily maximum air temperature in Vienna by 7 K. The daily minimum air temperature will increase by 2–4 K. Changes caused by urban growth or densification mainly affect air temperature and human thermal comfort locally where new urbanisation takes place and does not occur significantly in the central districts. A combination of near zero-energy standards and increasing albedo of building materials on the city scale accomplishes a maximum reduction of urban canyon temperature achieved by changes in urban parameters of 0.9 K for the minima and 0.2 K for the maxima. Local scale changes of different adaptation measures show that insulation of buildings alone increases the maximum wall surface temperatures by more than 10 K or the maximum mean radiant temperature (MRT) in the canyon by 5 K. Therefore, measures to reduce MRT within the urban canyons like tree shade are needed to complement the proposed measures. This study concludes that the rising air temperatures expected by climate change puts an unprecedented heat burden on Viennese inhabitants, which cannot easily be reduced by measures concerning buildings within the city itself. Additionally, measures such as planting trees to provide shade, regional water sensitive planning and global reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in order to reduce temperature extremes are required.

Abstract Bat populations are in steep decline and presently, 16% of all species are classified as ‘threatened’. One main driver identified for this decline is the loss of natural roosting opportunities, caused by the removal of natural habitats. Installation of bat boxes is one solution to compensate for the lack of natural roosting opportunities. Current recommendations for box design emphasize low maintenance costs and are rarely based on empirical evidence. We investigated occupancy of 13,634 bat boxes in northern Bavaria, Germany. In our study, boxes differed in type, age and mounting height, as well as in maximum community age, that is the length of time a group of boxes had been installed in a particular place, the size of box groups and the distance to the next box in the surrounding area, that is box isolation. Our results showed that box occupancy depended on box type and bat species. As a case study, we analysed the two most common species found within the investigated boxes, Pipistrellus pipistrellus and Myotis nattereri, in more detail. Both species showed preference to a voluminous box that had a narrow entrance (‘Gable box’ 14 mm). For P. pipistrellus, only box type affected occupancy, whereas for M. nattereri, the relationship between box type and box age was important. Older boxes and boxes in areas with higher maximum community age of boxes showed higher box occupancy by bats. Box occupancy decreased with the distance between adjacent box groups (‘box isolation’). High mounting height showed a tendency for increased box occupancy, but the effect was only weakly significant. Because of the species‐specific responses in our study, we suggest installing a combination of different box types, including at least one box type with a narrow entrance (14 mm). Boxes should be placed as box groups of three to four boxes, and there should be short distances between adjacent box groups. We also recommend installing new box groups close to areas of high maximum community age of boxes.

As Large Language Models and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology rapidly develop and spread into daily life, it becomes crucial to anticipate how their use could harm people. One problem that has received a lot of attention in recent years is that this technology has displayed harmful biases, from generating derogatory stereotypes to producing disparate outcomes for different social groups. Although a lot of effort has been invested in assessing and mitigating these biases, our methods of measuring the biases of NLP models have serious problems and it is often unclear what they actually measure. In this paper, we provide an interdisciplinary approach to discussing the issue of NLP model bias by adopting the lens of psychometrics — a field specialized in the measurement of concepts like bias that are not directly observable. In particular, we will explore two central notions from psychometrics, the construct validity and the reliability of measurement tools, and discuss how they can be applied in the context of measuring model bias. Our goal is to provide NLP practitioners with methodological tools for designing better bias measures, and to inspire them more generally to explore tools from psychometrics when working on bias measurement tools. Abstract Objective Mucin is an important parameter for detection and assessment in studies of airway disease including asthma and cystic fibrosis. Histochemical techniques are often used to evaluate mucin in tissues sections. Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) is a common technique to detect neutral mucins in tissue, but this technique also detects other tissue components including cellular glycogen. We tested whether depletion of glycogen, a common cellular constituent, could impact the detection of mucin in the surface epithelium of the trachea. Results Normal tissues stained by PAS had significantly more staining than serial sections of glycogen-depleted tissue with PAS staining (i.e. dPAS technique) based on both quantitative analysis and semiquantitative scores. Most of the excess stain by the PAS technique was detected in ciliated cells adjacent to goblet cells. We also compared normal tissues using the Alcian blue technique, which does not have reported glycogen staining, with the dPAS technique. These groups had similar amounts of staining consistent with a high degree of mucin specificity. Our results suggest that when using PAS techniques to stain airways, the dPAS approach is preferred as it enhances the specificity for airway mucin.

Difficulties in person recognition are among the common complaints associated with cognitive ageing. The present series of experiments therefore investigated face and person recognition in young and older adults. The authors examined how within-domain and cross-domain repetition as well as semantic priming affect familiar face recognition and analyzed both behavioral and event-related brain potential (ERP) measures to identify specific processing stages of age-related deficits. During repetition priming (Experiments 1 and 2), the authors observed evidence of an age-related deficit in behavioral priming and clear reductions of both the N250r and the N400 ERP priming effects in older participants. At the same time, both semantic priming (Experiment 3) and the associated N400 ERP effect of semantic priming were largely intact in older adults. The authors suggest that ageing selectively affects the access to domain-general representations of familiar people via bottom-up perceptual processing units. At the same time, accessing domain-general representations via top-down semantic units seems to be relatively preserved in older adults.

Background: Zoonotically transmitted coronaviruses are responsible for three disease outbreaks since 2002, including the current COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2. Its efficient transmission and range of disease severity raise questions regarding the contributions of virus-receptor interactions. ACE2 is a host ectopeptidase and the receptor for SARS-CoV-2. Numerous reports describe ACE2 mRNA abundance and tissue distribution; however, mRNA abundance is not always representative of protein levels. Currently, there is limited data evaluating ACE2 protein and its correlation with other SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility factors. Materials and methods: We systematically examined the human upper and lower respiratory tract using single-cell RNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry to determine receptor expression and evaluated its association with risk factors for severe COVID-19. Findings: Our results reveal that ACE2 protein is highest within regions of the sinonasal cavity and pulmonary alveoli, sites of presumptive viral transmission and severe disease development, respectively. In the lung parenchyma, ACE2 protein was found on the apical surface of a small subset of alveolar type II cells and colocalized with TMPRSS2, a cofactor for SARS-CoV2 entry. ACE2 protein was not increased by pulmonary risk factors for severe COVID-19. Additionally, ACE2 protein was not reduced in children, a demographic with a lower incidence of severe COVID-19. Interpretation: These results offer new insights into ACE2 protein localization in the human respiratory tract and its relationship with susceptibility factors to COVID-19.

La variedad de colores que sintetiza el capsicum es sorprendente. La capsantina y la capsorubina dan el color rojo pimentón que es de gran uso en alimentos. En lo que respecta al olor, el aroma del ají está determinado principalmente por pirazinas de alta intensidad al olor. Finalmente, en cuanto al sabor, el capsicum destaca por el picor causado por la capsaicina.

Abstract Background Postoperative pain control and enhanced mobilization, muscle strength and range of motion following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are pivotal requisites to optimize rehabilitation and early recovery. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of local infiltration analgesia (LIA), peripheral nerve blocks, general and spinal anesthesia on early functional recovery and pain control in primary total knee arthroplasty. Methods Between January 2016 until August 2016, 280 patients underwent primary TKA and were subdivided into four groups according to their concomitant pain and anesthetic procedure with catheter-based techniques of femoral and sciatic nerve block (group GA&FNB, n = 81) or epidural catheter (group SP&EPI, n = 51) in combination with general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, respectively, and LIA combined with general anesthesia (group GA&LIA, n = 86) or spinal anesthesia (group SP&LIA, n = 61). Outcome parameters focused on the evaluation of pain (NRS scores), mobilization, muscle strength and range of motion up to 7 days postoperatively. The cumulative consumption of (rescue) pain medication was analyzed. Results Pain relief was similar in all groups, while the use of opioid medication was significantly lower (up to 58%) in combination with spinal anesthesia, especially in SP&EPI. The LIA groups, in contrast, revealed significant higher mobilization (up to 26%) and muscle strength (up to 20%) in the early postoperative period. No analgesic technique-related or surgery-related complications occurred within the first 7 days. Due to insufficient pain relief, 8.4% of the patients in the catheter-based groups and 12.2% in the LIA groups resulted in a change of the anesthetics pain management. Conclusions The LIA technique offers a safe and effective treatment option concerning early functional recovery and pain control in TKA. Significant advantages were shown for mobilization and muscle strength in the early postoperative period while pain relief was comparable within the groups.

Methods Between January 2016 until August 2016, 134 patients underwent primary UKA and were subdivided into four groups according to their concomitant pain and anesthetic procedure with catheter-based techniques of femoral and sciatic nerve block (group GA&FNB, n = 38) or epidural catheter (group SP&EPI, n = 20) in combination with general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, respectively, and LIA combined with general anesthesia (group GA&LIA, n = 46) or spinal anesthesia (group SP&LIA, n = 30). Outcome parameters focused on the evaluation of pain (NRS scores), mobilization, muscle strength and range of motion up to 7 days postoperatively. The cumulative consumption of (rescue) pain medication was analyzed. Results The LIA groups revealed significantly lower (about 50%) mean NRS scores (at rest) compared to the catheter-based groups at the day of surgery. In the early postoperative period, the dose of hydromorphone as rescue pain medication was significantly lower (up to 68%) in patients with SP&EPI compared to all other groups. No significant differences could be detected with regard to grade of mobilization, muscle strength and range of motion. However, there seemed to be a trend towards improved mobilization and muscle strength with general anesthesia and LIA, whereof general anesthesia generally tended to ameliorate mobilization. Conclusions Except for a significant lower NRS score at rest in the LIA groups at day of surgery, pain relief was comparable in all groups without clinically relevant differences, while the use of opioids was significantly lower in patients with SP&EPI. A clear clinically relevant benefit for LIA in UKA cannot be stated. However, LIA offers a safe and effective treatment option comparable to the well-established conventional procedures.
