In this paper, the performance of non-uniform spacing of sensors is evaluated for the MUSIC algorithm which estimates the direction of arrival (DOA) of a narrowband plane wave impinging on an array of sensors. Unlike uniform sensor spacing arrangement, where sensors are equidistant (equal to half the wavelength), we consider non-uniform spacing for the arrangement of sensors, where the distance between consecutive sensors increases progressively. In the cops and robber game, there are multiple cops and a single robber taking turns moving along the edges of a graph. The goal of the cops is to capture the robber (move to the same vertex as the robber) and the goal of the robber is to avoid capture. The cop number of a given graph is the smallest number of cops required to ensure the capture of the robber. The k-component order connectivity of a graph G = (V, E) is the size of a smallest set U, such that all the connected components of the induced graph on V \ U are of size at most k. Experimental and computational investigations are carried out to elucidate the influence of ethanol addition on n-heptane auto-ignition in counterflows. An axisymmetric stream of air, temperature gradually increased, is directed onto the surface of an evaporating pool of a liquid fuel. The air-stream temperature at auto-ignition is measured at various strain rates for n-heptane, ethanol, and various n-heptane/ethanol mixtures. Critical conditions for auto-ignition are predicted employing San Diego Mechanism for both fuels and fuel mixtures, and the results are compared with measurements. Measurements and predictions show that low-temperature chemistry (LTC) plays a significant role in promoting auto-ignition of n-heptane at low strain rates, but there is insufficient residence time at high strain rates for LTC to take place, so auto-ignition is promoted by high-temperature chemistry. Experimental and computational results show addition of ethanol inhibits LTC of n-heptane. To identify the responsible elementary steps, computations are performed to identify those dominate O2 consumption and contribute to the temperature rise in the reaction zone for n-heptane and n-heptane/ethanol mixtures at low strain rates. For n-heptane, O2 is consumed primarily by the low-temperature steps that result in ketohydroperoxide; the temperature rise is produced by subsequent LTC steps. For the mixtures, a key step consuming O2 is O2 + CH3CHOH = HO2 + CH3CHO, and the heat release occurs through the classical high-temperature reaction mechanism. Thus, the inhibition of auto-ignition that is observed to occur when ethanol is added to n-heptane arises from the competition for O2 between this step and the LTC addition of O2 to the heptyl radical and to the radical arising from the subsequent isomerization, for n-heptane.

In 5G, the Physical Downlink Control CHannel (PDCCH) carries crucial information enabling the User Equipment (UE) to connect in UL and DL. UEs are unaware of the frequency location at which PDCCH is encoded, hence they need to perform blind decoding over a limited set of possible candidates. We address the problem faced by the gNodeB of selecting PDCCH candidates for each UE to optimize data transmission. We formulate it as a Maximum Weighted Independent Set (MWIS) problem, that is known to be an NP-hard problem and cannot even be approximated. A solution method called Weight-to-Degree Ratio (WDR) Greedy emerges as a strong contender for practical implementations due to its favorable performance-to-complexity trade-off and theoretical performance guarantees.

A novel method for analyzing counterflow diffusion flames, inspired by Zurada's sensitivity approach for neural networks, is proposed to identify critical species influencing the heat release rate in combustion. By further analyzing concentration changes of selected key species and radicals, this method reveals complex interactions among them across regions with temperature. To illustrate this approach, the study investigates the mechanisms of auto-ignition of n-heptane and ethanol mixtures in a counterflow configuration under low strain rates. In mixtures where n-heptane is dominant, the inhibition of low-temperature chemistry (LTC) by addition of ethanol impacts the heat release rate in regions where the temperature is higher through the diffusion of specific radicals such as CH2O, C2H4, C3H6, and H2O2. In mixtures where ethanol is dominant, the high ethanol fractions in the mixture increase the heat release rate, primarily due to ethanol decomposition and its subsequent reactions. This method effectively quantifies and compares the influence of both chemical kinetics and species diffusion effects, providing detailed insights into the interactions among species across the reactive field when analyzing the counterflow configuration of complex fuel mixtures.

Atomic congestion games are a classic topic in network design, routing, and algorithmic game theory, and are capable of modeling congestion and flow optimization tasks in various application areas. While both the price of anarchy for such games as well as the computational complexity of computing their Nash equilibria are by now well-understood, the computational complexity of computing a system-optimal set of strategies -- that is, a centrally planned routing that minimizes the average cost of agents -- is severely understudied in the literature. We close this gap by identifying the exact boundaries of tractability for the problem through the lens of the parameterized complexity paradigm. After showing that the problem remains highly intractable even on extremely simple networks, we obtain a set of results which demonstrate that the structural parameters which control the computational (in)tractability of the problem are not vertex-separator based in nature (such as, e.g., treewidth), but rather based on edge separators. Binary similarity involves determining whether two binary programs exhibit similar functionality, often originating from the same source code. In this work, we propose VexIR2Vec, an approach for binary similarity using VEX-IR, an architecture-neutral Intermediate Representation (IR). We extract the embeddings from sequences of basic blocks, termed peepholes, derived by random walks on the control-flow graph. The peepholes are normalized using transformations inspired by compiler optimizations. The VEX-IR Normalization Engine mitigates, with these transformations, the architectural and compiler-induced variations in binaries while exposing semantic similarities. We then learn the vocabulary of representations at the entity level of the IR using the knowledge graph embedding techniques in an unsupervised manner. This vocabulary is used to derive function embeddings for similarity assessment using VexNet, a feed-forward Siamese network designed to position similar functions closely and separate dissimilar ones in an n-dimensional space. This approach is amenable for both diffing and searching tasks, ensuring robustness against Out-Of-Vocabulary (OOV) issues. We evaluate VexIR2Vec on a dataset comprising 2.7M functions and 15.5K binaries from 7 projects compiled across 12 compilers targeting x86 and ARM architectures. In diffing experiments, VexIR2Vec outperforms the nearest baselines by $40\%$, $18\%$, $21\%$, and $60\%$ in cross-optimization, cross-compilation, cross-architecture, and obfuscation settings, respectively. In the searching experiment, VexIR2Vec achieves a mean average precision of $0.76$, outperforming the nearest baseline by $46\%$. Our framework is highly scalable and is built as a lightweight, multi-threaded, parallel library using only open-source tools. VexIR2Vec is $3.1$-$3.5 \times$ faster than the closest baselines and orders-of-magnitude faster than other tools.

A conflict-free open neighborhood coloring of a graph is an assignment of colors to the vertices such that for every vertex there is a color that appears exactly once in its open neighborhood. For a graph $G$, the smallest number of colors required for such a coloring is called the conflict-free open neighborhood (CFON) chromatic number and is denoted by $\chi_{ON}(G)$. By considering closed neighborhood instead of open neighborhood, we obtain the analogous notions of conflict-free closed neighborhood (CFCN) coloring, and CFCN chromatic number (denoted by $\chi_{CN}(G)$). The notion of conflict-free coloring was introduced in 2002, and has since received considerable attention. The `Conflict-Free Open (Closed) Neighborhood coloring', abbreviated CFON (CFCN) coloring, of a graph $G$ using $r$ colors is a coloring of the vertices of $G$ such that every vertex sees some color exactly once in its open (closed) neighborhood. The minimum $r$ such that $G$ has a CFON (CFCN) coloring using $r$ colors is called the `CFON chromatic number' (`CFCN chromatic number') of $G$. This is denoted by $\chi_{CF}^{ON}(G)$ ($\chi_{CF}^{CN}(G)$). D\k ebski and Przyby\l{}o in [J. Graph Theory, 2021] showed that if $G$ is a line graph with maximum degree $\Delta$, then $\chi_{CF}^{CN}(G) = O(\ln \Delta)$. As an open question, they asked if the result could be extended to claw-free ($K_{1,3}$-free) graphs, which are a superclass of line graphs. For $k\geq 3$, we show that if $G$ is $K_{1,k}$-free, then $\chi_{CF}^{ON}(G) = O(k^2\ln \Delta)$. In standard number-in-hand multi-party communication complexity, performance is measured as the total number of bits transmitted globally in the network. In this paper, we study a variation called local communication complexity in which performance instead measures the maximum number of bits sent or received at any one player. We focus on a simple model where $n$ players, each with one input bit, execute a protocol by exchanging messages to compute a function on the $n$ input bits. We ask what can and cannot be solved with a small local communication complexity in this setting. We begin by establishing a non-trivial lower bound on the local complexity for a specific function by proving that counting the number of $1$'s among the first $17$ input bits distributed among the participants requires a local complexity strictly greater than $1$. We further investigate whether harder counting problems of this type can yield stronger lower bounds, providing a largely negative answer by showing that constant local complexity is sufficient to count the number $1$ bits over the entire input, and therefore compute any symmetric function. In addition to counting, we show that both sorting and searching can be computed in constant local complexity. We then use the counting solution as a subroutine to demonstrate that constant local complexity is also sufficient to compute many standard modular arithmetic operations on two operands, including: comparisons, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentiation. Finally we establish that function $GCD(x,y)$ where $x$ and $y$ are in the range $[1,n]$ has local complexity of $O(1)$. A conflict-free coloring of a graph $G$ is a (partial) coloring of its vertices such that every vertex $u$ has a neighbor whose assigned color is unique in the neighborhood of $u$. There are two variants of this coloring, one defined using the open neighborhood and one using the closed neighborhood. For both variants, we study the problem of deciding whether the conflict-free coloring of a given graph $G$ is at most a given number $k$. In this work, we investigate the relation of clique-width and minimum number of colors needed (for both variants) and show that these parameters do not bound one another. Moreover, we consider specific graph classes, particularly graphs of bounded clique-width and types of intersection graphs, such as distance hereditary graphs, interval graphs and unit square and disk graphs. We also consider Kneser graphs and split graphs. We give (often tight) upper and lower bounds and determine the complexity of the decision problem on these graph classes, which improve some of the results from the literature. Secondary animation effects are essential for liveliness. We propose a simple, real-time solution for adding them on top of standard skinning, enabling artist-driven stylization of skeletal motion. Our method takes a standard skeleton animation as input, along with a skin mesh and rig weights. It then derives per-vertex deformations from the different linear and angular velocities along the skeletal hierarchy. We highlight two specific applications of this general framework, namely the cartoonlike "squashy" and "floppy" effects, achieved from specific combinations of velocity terms. As our results show, combining these effects enables to mimic, enhance and stylize physical-looking behaviours within a standard animation pipeline, for arbitrary skinned characters. Interactive on CPU, our method allows for GPU implementation, yielding real-time performances even on large meshes. Animator control is supported through a simple interface toolkit, enabling to refine the desired type and magnitude of deformation at relevant vertices by simply painting weights. The resulting rigged character automatically responds to new skeletal animation, without further input.

In the pliable index coding (PICOD) problem, a server is to serve multiple clients, each of which possesses a unique subset of the complete message set as side information and requests a new message which it does not have. The goal of the server is to do this using as few transmissions as possible. This work presents a hypergraph coloring approach to the scalar PICOD problem. A \textit{conflict-free coloring} of a hypergraph is known from literature as an assignment of colors to its vertices so that each hyperedge of the graph contains one uniquely colored vertex. For a given PICOD problem represented by a hypergraph consisting of messages as vertices and request-sets as hyperedges, we present achievable PICOD schemes using conflict-free colorings of the PICOD hypergraph. Various graph theoretic parameters arising out of such colorings (and some new coloring variants) then give a number of upper bounds on the optimal PICOD length, which we study in this work. Suppose the PICOD hypergraph has $m$ vertices and $n$ hyperedges, where every hyperedge overlaps with at most $\Gamma$ other hyperedges. We show easy to implement randomized algorithms for the following: (a) For the single request case, we give a PICOD of length $O(\log^2\Gamma)$. This result improves over known achievability results for some parameter ranges, (b) For the $t$-request case, we give an MDS code of length $\max(O(\log \Gamma \log m), O(t \log m))$. Further if the hyperedges (request sets) are sufficiently large, we give a PICOD of the same length as above, which is not based on MDS construction. In general, this gives an improvement over prior achievability results. Given an undirected graph $G = (V,E)$, a conflict-free coloring with respect to open neighborhoods (CFON coloring) is a vertex coloring such that every vertex has a uniquely colored vertex in its open neighborhood. The minimum number of colors required for such a coloring is the CFON chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\chi_{ON}(G)$. In previous work [WG 2020], we showed the upper bound $\chi_{ON}(G) \leq dc(G) + 3$, where $dc(G)$ denotes the distance to cluster parameter of $G$. In this paper, we obtain the improved upper bound of $\chi_{ON}(G) \leq dc(G) + 1$. We also exhibit a family of graphs for which $\chi_{ON}(G) > dc(G)$, thereby demonstrating that our upper bound is tight., Comment: 29 pages

Given a graph, the conflict-free coloring problem on open neighborhoods (CFON) asks to color the vertices of the graph so that all the vertices have a uniquely colored vertex in its open neighborhood. The smallest number of colors required for such a coloring is called the conflict-free chromatic number and denoted $\chi_{ON}(G)$. In this note, we study this problem on $S_k$-free graphs where $S_k$ is a star on $k+1$ vertices. When $G$ is $S_k$-free, we show that $\chi_{ON}(G) = O(k\cdot \log^{2+\epsilon}\Delta)$, for any $\epsilon > 0$, where $\Delta$ denotes the maximum degree of $G$. Further, we show existence of claw-free ($S_3$-free) graphs that require $\Omega(\log \Delta)$ colors.

Hackathons and similar time-bounded events have become a global phenomenon. Their proliferation in various domains and their usefulness for a variety of goals has subsequently led to the emergence of different formats. While there are a multitude of guidelines available on how to prepare and run a hackathon, most of them focus on a particular format that was created for a specific purpose within a domain for a certain type of participants. This makes it difficult in particular for novice organizers to decide how to run an event that fits their needs. To address this gap we developed a planning kit that is organized around 12 key decision that organizers need to make when preparing and running a hackathon, and the tradeoffs that drive decision-making. In an undirected graph $G$, a conflict-free coloring with respect to open neighborhoods (denoted by CFON coloring) is an assignment of colors to the vertices such that every vertex has a uniquely colored vertex in its open neighborhood. The minimum number of colors required for a CFON coloring of $G$ is the CFON chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\chi_{ON}(G)$. The decision problem that asks whether $\chi_{ON}(G) \leq k$ is NP-complete. We obtain the following results: * Bodlaender, Kolay and Pieterse [WADS 2019] showed the upper bound $\chi_{ON}(G)\leq {\sf fvs}(G)+3$, where ${\sf fvs}(G)$ denotes the size of a minimum feedback vertex set of $G$. We show the improved bound of $\chi_{ON}(G)\leq {\sf fvs}(G)+2$, which is tight, thereby answering an open question in the above paper. * We study the relation between $\chi_{ON}(G)$ and the pathwidth of the graph $G$, denoted ${\sf pw}(G)$. The above paper from WADS 2019 showed the upper bound $\chi_{ON}(G) \leq 2{\sf tw}(G)+1$ where ${\sf tw}(G)$ stands for the treewidth of $G$. This implies an upper bound of $\chi_{ON}(G) \leq 2{\sf pw}(G)+1$. We show an improved bound of $\chi_{ON}(G) \leq \lfloor \frac{5}{3}({\sf pw}(G)+1) \rfloor$. * We prove new bounds for $\chi_{ON}(G)$ with respect to the structural parameters neighborhood diversity and distance to cluster, improving existing results. * We also study the partial coloring variant of the CFON coloring problem, which allows vertices to be left uncolored. Let $\chi^*_{ON}(G)$ denote the minimum number of colors required to color $G$ as per this variant. Abel et. al. [SIDMA 2018] showed that $\chi^*_{ON}(G) \leq 8$ when $G$ is planar. They asked if fewer colors would suffice for planar graphs. We answer this question by showing that $\chi^*_{ON}(G) \leq 5$ for all planar $G$. The closed neighborhood conflict-free chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chi_{CN}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors required to color the vertices of $G$ such that for every vertex, there is a color that appears exactly once in its closed neighborhood. Pach and Tardos [Combin. Probab. Comput. 2009] showed that $\chi_{CN}(G) = O(\log^{2+\varepsilon} \Delta)$, for any $\varepsilon > 0$, where $\Delta$ is the maximum degree. In [Combin. Probab. Comput. 2014], Glebov, Szab\'o and Tardos showed existence of graphs $G$ with $\chi_{CN}(G) = \Omega(\log^2\Delta)$. In an undirected graph, a conflict-free coloring (with respect to open neighborhoods) is an assignment of colors to the vertices of the graph $G$ such that every vertex in $G$ has a uniquely colored vertex in its open neighborhood. The conflict-free coloring problem asks to find the smallest number of colors required for a conflict-free coloring. The conflict-free coloring problem is NP-complete. From results in Abel et. al. [SODA 2017], it can be inferred that every planar graph has a conflict-free coloring with at most nine colors. As the best known lower bound for planar graphs is four colors, it was asked in the same paper if fewer colors would suffice. We make progress in answering this question, by showing that every planar graph can be colored using at most six colors. The same proof idea is used to show that every outerplanar graph can be colored using at most five colors. Using a different approach, we further show that every outerplanar graph can be colored using at most four colors. Finally, we study the problem on Kneser graphs. We show that $k+2$ colors are necessary and sufficient to color the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ when $n\geq k(k+1)^2 + 1$., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

For an undirected graph G, we consider the following problems: given a fixed graph H, can we partition the vertices of G into two non-empty sets A and B such that neither the induced graph G[A] nor G[B] contain H (i) as a subgraph? (ii) as an induced subgraph? These problems are NP-complete and are expressible in monadic second order logic (MSOL). The MSOL formulation, together with Courcelle's theorem implies linear time solvability on graphs with bounded tree-width. This approach yields algorithms with running time f(|phi|, t) * n, where |phi| is the length of the MSOL formula, t is the tree-width of the graph and n is the number of vertices of the graph. The dependency of f(|phi|, t) on |phi| can be as bad as a tower of exponentials. In this paper, we present explicit combinatorial algorithms for these problems for graphs G whose tree-width is bounded. We obtain 2^{O(t^r)} * n time algorithms when H is any fixed graph of order r. In the special case when H = K_r, a complete graph on r vertices, we get an 2^{O(t+r \log t)} * n time algorithm. The techniques can be extended to provide FPT algorithms to determine the smallest number q such that V can be partitioned into q parts such that none of the parts have H as a subgraph (induced subgraph).
