We present the pulse arrival times and high-precision dispersion measure estimates for 14 millisecond pulsars observed simultaneously in the 300-500 MHz and 1260-1460 MHz frequency bands using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The data spans over a baseline of 3.5 years (2018-2021), and is the first official data release made available by the Indian Pulsar Timing Array collaboration. This data release presents a unique opportunity for investigating the interstellar medium effects at low radio frequencies and their impact on the timing precision of pulsar timing array experiments. In addition to the dispersion measure time series and pulse arrival times obtained using both narrowband and wideband timing techniques, we also present the dispersion measure structure function analysis for selected pulsars. Our ongoing investigations regarding the frequency dependence of dispersion measures have been discussed. Based on the preliminary analysis for five millisecond pulsars, we do not find any conclusive evidence of chromaticity in dispersion measures. Data from regular simultaneous two-frequency observations are presented for the first time in this work. This distinctive feature leads us to the highest precision dispersion measure estimates obtained so far for a subset of our sample. Simultaneous multi-band uGMRT observations in Band 3 and Band 5 are crucial for high-precision dispersion measure estimation and for the prospect of expanding the overall frequency coverage upon the combination of data from the various Pulsar Timing Array consortia in the near future. We present an occultation study of compact radio sources by the plasma tail of interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov (C/2019 Q4) both pre- and near-perihelion using the Arecibo and Green Bank radio telescopes. The interplanetary scintillation (IPS) technique was used to probe the plasma tail at P-band (302--352 MHz), 820 MHz, and L-band (1120--1730 MHz). The presence and absence of scintillation at different perpendicular distances from the central axis of the plasma tail suggests a narrow tail of less than 6~arcmin at a distance of $\sim$10~arcmin ($\sim$$10^6$~km) from the comet nucleus. Data recorded during the occultation of B1019+083 on 31 October 2019 with the Arecibo Telescope covered the width of the plasma tail from its outer region to the central axis. The systematic increase in scintillation during the occultation provides the plasma properties associated with the tail when the comet was at its pre-perihelion phase. The excess level of L-band scintillation indicates a plasma density enhancement of $\sim$15--20 times that of the background solar wind. The evolving shape of the observed scintillation power spectra across the tail from its edge to the central axis suggests a density spectrum flatter than Kolmogorov, and that the plasma-density irregularity scales present in the tail range between 10 and 700 km. The discovery of a high-frequency spectral excess, corresponding to irregularity scales much smaller than the Fresnel scale, suggests the presence of small-scale density structures in the plasma tail, likely caused by interaction between the solar wind and the plasma environment formed by the comet., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, and 1 table (Accepted for publication in Planetary Science Journal)

Decades long monitoring of millisecond pulsars, which exhibit highly stable rotational periods, in pulsar timing array experiments is on the threshold of discovering nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background. This paper describes the Indian Pulsar timing array (InPTA) experiment, which employs the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) for timing an ensemble of millisecond pulsars for this purpose. We highlight InPTA's observation strategies and analysis methods, which are relevant for a future PTA experiment with the more sensitive Square Kilometer Array (SKA) telescope. We show that the unique multi-sub-array multi-band wide-bandwidth frequency coverage of the InPTA provides Dispersion Measure estimates with unprecedented precision for PTA pulsars, e.g., ~ 2 x 10{-5} pc-cm{-3} for PSR J1909-3744. Configuring the SKA-low and SKA-mid as two and four sub-arrays respectively, it is shown that comparable precision is achievable, using observation strategies similar to those pursued by the InPTA, for a larger sample of 62 pulsars requiring about 26 and 7 hours per epoch for the SKA-mid and the SKA-low telescopes respectively. We also review the ongoing efforts to develop PTA-relevant general relativistic constructs that will be required to search for nanohertz gravitational waves from isolated super-massive black hole binary systems like blazar OJ 287. High-precision measurements of the pulsar dispersion measure (DM) are possible using telescopes with low-frequency wideband receivers. We present an initial study of the application of the wideband timing technique, which can simultaneously measure the pulsar times of arrival (ToAs) and DMs, for a set of five pulsars observed with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) as part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) campaign. We have used the observations with the 300-500 MHz band of the uGMRT for this purpose. We obtain high precision in DM measurements with precisions of the order 10^{-6}cm^{-3}pc. The ToAs obtained have sub-{\mu}s precision and the root-mean-square of the post-fit ToA residuals are in the sub-{\mu}s range. We find that the uncertainties in the DMs and ToAs obtained with this wideband technique, applied to low-frequency data, are consistent with the results obtained with traditional pulsar timing techniques and comparable to high-frequency results from other PTAs. This work opens up an interesting possibility of using low-frequency wideband observations for precision pulsar timing and gravitational wave detection with similar precision as high-frequency observations used conventionally., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We conducted a drift-scan observation campaign using the 305-m Arecibo telescope in January and March 2020 when the observatory was temporarily closed during the intense earthquakes and the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. The primary objective of the survey was to search for fast radio transients, including Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs). We used the 7-beam ALFA receiver to observe different sections of the sky within the declination region $\sim$(10$-$20) deg on 23 nights and collected 160 hours of data in total. We searched our data for single-pulse transients, covering up to a maximum dispersion measure of 11 000 pc cm$^{-3}$ at which the dispersion delay across the entire bandwidth is equal to the 13 s transit length of our observations. The analysis produced more than 18 million candidates. Machine learning techniques sorted the radio frequency interference and possibly astrophysical candidates, allowing us to visually inspect and confirm the candidate transients. We found no evidence for new astrophysical transients in our data. We also searched for emission from repeated transient signals, but found no evidence for such sources. We detected single pulses from two known pulsars in our observations and their measured flux densities are consistent with the expected values. Pulsar radio emission undergoes dispersion due to the presence of free electrons in the interstellar medium (ISM). The dispersive delay in the arrival time of pulsar signal changes over time due to the varying ISM electron column density along the line of sight. Correcting for this delay accurately is crucial for the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves using Pulsar Timing Arrays. In this work, we present in-band and inter-band DM estimates of four pulsars observed with uGMRT over the timescale of a year using two different template alignment methods. The DMs obtained using both these methods show only subtle differences for PSR 1713+0747 and J1909$-$3744. A considerable offset is seen in the DM of PSR J1939+2134 and J2145$-$0750 between the two methods. This could be due to the presence of scattering in the former and profile evolution in the latter. We find that both methods are useful but could have a systematic offset between the DMs obtained. Irrespective of the template alignment methods followed, the precision on the DMs obtained is about $10^{-3}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ using only BAND3 and $10^{-4}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ after combining data from BAND3 and BAND5 of the uGMRT. In a particular result, we have detected a DM excess of about $5\times10^{-3}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ on 24 February 2019 for PSR J2145$-$0750. This excess appears to be due to the interaction region created by fast solar wind from a coronal hole and a coronal mass ejection (CME) observed from the Sun on that epoch. In this article, we investigate the formation and disruption of a coronal sigmoid from the active region (AR) NOAA 11909 on 07 December 2013, by analyzing multi-wavelength and multi-instrument observations. Our analysis suggests that the formation of `transient' sigmoid initiated $\approx$1 hour before its eruption through a coupling between two twisted coronal loop systems. A comparison between coronal and photospheric images suggests that the coronal sigmoid was formed over a simple $\beta$-type AR which also possessed dispersed magnetic field structure in the photosphere. The line-of-sight photospheric magnetograms also reveal moving magnetic features, small-scale flux cancellation events near the PIL, and overall flux cancellation during the extended pre-eruption phase which suggest the role of tether-cutting reconnection toward the build-up of the flux rope. The disruption of the sigmoid proceeded with a two-ribbon eruptive M1.2 flare (SOL2013-12-07T07:29). In radio frequencies, we observe type III and type II bursts in meter wavelengths during the impulsive phase of the flare. The successful eruption of the flux rope leads to a fast coronal mass ejection (with a linear speed of $\approx$1085 km s -1 ) in SOHO/LASCO field-of-view. During the evolution of the flare, we clearly observe typical "sigmoid-to-arcade" transformation. Prior to the onset of the impulsive phase of the flare, flux rope undergoes a slow rise ($\approx$15 km s -1 ) which subsequently transitions into a fast eruption ($\approx$110 km s -1 ). The two-phase evolution of the flux rope shows temporal associations with the soft X-ray precursor and impulsive phase emissions of the M-class flare, respectively, thus pointing toward a feedback relationship between magnetic reconnection and early CME dynamics., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted in Solar Physics Journal

The abrupt change in the pulse period of a pulsar is called a pulsar glitch. In this paper, we present eleven pulsar glitches detected using the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) in high cadence timing observations of 8 pulsars. The measured relative amplitude of glitches ($\Delta \nu/\nu$) from our data ranges from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-9}$. Among these glitches, three are new discoveries, being reported for the first time. We also reanalyze the largest pulsar glitch in the Crab pulsar (PSR J0534+2200) by fitting the ORT data to a new phenomenological model including the slow rise in the post-glitch evolution. We measure an exponential recovery of 30 days after the Vela glitch detected on MJD 57734 with a healing factor $Q=5.8\times 10^{-3}$. We report the detection of emission from the OH 18 cm Λ-doublet transitions toward Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE using the Arecibo Telescope. The antenna temperatures are 113 ± 3 mK for the 1667 MHz line and 57 ± 3 mK for the 1665 MHz line. The beam-averaged OH column density (centered on the comet nucleus) derived from the 1667 transition is N OH = (1.11 ± 0.06) × 1013 cm−2. We implemented the Haser model to derive an OH production rate. The estimated OH production rate using the 1667 transition is Q OH = (3.6 ± 0.6) × 1028 s−1, a factor of 2.4 lower than optically derived values for the same observing day, the difference of which is likely explained by quenching.

We present the first dedicated observations of Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). We have developed a synthesis imaging technique, tailored to the properties of modern "large-N" low-frequency radio telescopes. This allows us to image the variability on IPS timescales across 900 square degrees simultaneously. We show that for our observations, a sampling rate of just 2Hz is sufficient to resolve the IPS signature of most sources. We develop tests to ensure that IPS variability is separated from ionospheric or instrumental variability. We validate our results by comparison with existing catalogues of IPS sources, and near-contemporaneous observations by other IPS facilities. Using just five minutes of data, we produce catalogues at both 79MHz and 158MHz, each containing over 350 scintillating sources. At the field centre we detect approximately one scintillating source per square degree, with a minimum scintillating flux density at 158MHz of 110mJy, corresponding to a compact flux density of approximately 400mJy. Each of these sources is a known radio source, however only a minority were previously known to contain sub-arcsecond components. We discuss our findings and the prospects they hold for future astrophysical and heliospheric studies.

Space weather, just like its meteorological counterpart, is of extreme importance when it comes to its impact on terrestrial near and far space environments. In recent years, space weather research has acquired an important place as a thrust area of research having implications both in space science and technology. The presence of satellites and other technological systems from different nations in near-earth space necessitates that one not only must have a comprehensive understanding of the origin and evolution of space weather processes but also of their impact on technology, and terrestrial upper atmosphere. To address this aspect, nations across the globe including India have been investing in research concerning Sun, Solar processes & their evolution from solar interior into the interplanetary space and their impact on earth's magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system. In India over the years, a substantial amount of work has been done in each of these areas by various agencies/institutions. In fact, India has been, and continues to be, at the forefront of space research and has ambitious future programs concerning these areas encompassing space weather. This review aims at providing a glimpse of this Indian perspective on space weather research to the reader and presenting an up-to-date status of the same.

We report on the amplitude of the density turbulence spectrum ($C_{N}^{2}$) and the density modulation index ($\delta N/N$) in the solar wind between $10$ and $45 R_{\odot}$. We derive these quantities using a structure function that is observationally constrained by occultation observations of the Crab nebula made in 2011 and 2013 and similar observations published earlier. We use the most general form of the structure function, together with currently used prescriptions for the inner/dissipation scale of the turbulence spectrum. Our work yields a comprehensive picture of a) the manner in which $C_{N}^{2}$ and $\delta N/N$ vary with heliocentric distance in the solar wind and b) of the solar cycle dependence of these quantities.

This talk reviews the interplanetary scintillation (IPS) technique, which allows for the determination of speed and density turbulence of the solar wind in the three-dimensional (3D) inner heliosphere. When sufficient number of scintillating sources are employed to suitably probe a given part of interplanetary space, IPS observations are powerful to study the ambient solar wind as well as to track coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the distance range of Sun to Earth's orbit. A number of CMEs have been tracked over the entire Sun-Earth distance, by combining the white-light images from the LASCO/SOHO space mission and IPS measurements obtained from the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and ISEE Multi-antenna system. Since the IPS observations at Ooty are on a grid of large number of radio sources, they provide image of disturbance associated with the CME at different distances from the Sun before its arrival at the near-Earth space. The results on the CME “speeddistance” evolution indicate a two-level deceleration: a low decline in speed at distances within or about 100 solar radii and a rapid decrease at larger distances from the Sun. However, the radial decline rates of speed, respectively within and above 100 solar radii, differ between different CMEs and suggest the involvement of input energy associated with the CME eruption in the propagation as well as the dynamics of the ambient solar wind. The typical linear size evolution of the CME with heliocentric distance suggests a pressure balance maintained between the CME driver gas and the ambient solar wind. Further, IPS estimates of density turbulence and speed have been used as inputs to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) timedependent tomography to reconstruct the full 3D distributions of both solar wind speed and density throughout the inner heliosphere. The usefulness of IPS measurements is discussed on the possibility of forming a basic model to forecast the arrival of CMEs at 1 AU.

Ooty Radio Telescope (Swarup et al. 1971) is 530-m long and 30-m wide cylindrical paraboloid equatorially mounted radio telescope located in southern India. With its large collecting area and low frequency of observations (326.5 MHz), it is a sensitive instrument suitable for steep spectrum sources, such as radio pulsars, which are bright at these frequencies. In the early 2000, pulsar observations at the ORT had stopped due to unavailability of a state-of-art backend. We started a project to upgrade the legacy ORT by equipping it with a new receiver and a state-of-art digital backend specifically designed for pulsar observations. This receiver, called Pulsar Ooty radio telescope New Digital Efficient Receiver (PONDER), is capable of real-time time-series observations of pulsars, inter-planetary scintillations and very long baseline interferometer (VLBI). It was designed and commissioned between 2008 – 2012 and significantly upgraded the science capability of the instrument. In this presentation, this instrument and the resulting science results are described.

The goniopolarimetry algorithm allows simultaneous direction finding and polarization measurement of incoming radio sources. In our case, we have done simulations and preliminary tests on 300 MHz set up, where we have designed three mutually orthogonal active monopole array antennas and the received signals are fed to the back end receiver to be digitized and correlated. Using those auto and cross-correlated parameters, along with calibrated receiver antenna parameter and receiver system co-ordinates, the gonio-poraimetry algorithm can continuously provide source direction and polarization. This whole set up has been simulated using Cadfeko and Matlab. The simulations gave us good results with maximum error of 5%.

The Indian Pulsar Timing Array is an experiment aimed at detection of Gravitational waves (GWs) in the sub-microHertz frequency range by observing an ensemble of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). GWs from both the stochastic GW background as well as the individual sources like supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) leave an imprint on the time-of-arrival (TOA) of the pulsed emission from MSPs, which could be detected with high precision due to the clock-like stability of these pulsars. InPTA aims to contribute its data and its analysis results to an international effort, called the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA), where three other experiments also contribute data.

We report on the results of multi-frequency follow-up observations of three pulsars (PSRs J0026+6320, J2208+5500 and J2217+5733) discovered with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). These observations were carried out with the GMRT and the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). We report improved timing solutions for all three pulsars. For PSR J2208+5500, we estimate the nulling fraction to be 53(3)\%. The steep spectrum of this pulsar, its single component profile, and narrow pulse width suggest its single component to be a core component. If so, this significant cessation of emission in a core component is inconsistent with a geometric origin of nulls, such as those due to `empty' sightline traverses, and more likely due to intrinsic changes in the pulsar magnetosphere. We have measured scatter-broadening timescales at 325 and 610 MHz for PSRs J0026+6320 and J2217+5733. The implied scatter-broadening frequency scaling index of $-$2.9 for both pulsars is different from that expected assuming Kolmogorov turbulence in the interstellar medium. We also report spectral indices, obtained from imaging observations, for all three pulsars for the first time. The spectra for two of these pulsars indicate a possible spectral turnover between 100$-$300 MHz. Multi-frequency timing analyses carried out for these pulsars have enabled us to determine dispersion measures (DMs) with accuracies of 0.01 pc cm\sups{--3}. This demonstrates the usefulness of quasi-simultaneous multi-frequency multi-epoch timing observations with the GMRT and the ORT for studying variations in DM for millisecond pulsars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the interplanetary effects of a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the intense X2.7 flare that occurred on 05 May 2015. The near-Sun signatures of the CME at low-coronal heights [ ${

Radio pulsars show remarkable clock-like stability, which make them useful astronomy tools in experiments to test equation of state of neutron stars and detecting gravitational waves using pulsar timing techniques. A brief review of relevant astrophysical experiments is provided in this paper highlighting the current state-of-the-art of these experiments. A program to monitor frequently glitching pulsars with Indian radio telescopes using high cadence observations is presented, with illustrations of glitches detected in this program, including the largest ever glitch in PSR B0531+21. An Indian initiative to discover sub- $$\mu $$ Hz gravitational waves, called Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA), is also described briefly, where time-of-arrival uncertainties and post-fit residuals of the order of $$\mu $$ s are already achievable, comparable to other international pulsar timing array experiments. While timing the glitches and their recoveries are likely to provide constraints on the structure of neutron stars, InPTA will provide upper limits on sub- $$\mu $$ Hz gravitational waves apart from auxiliary pulsar science. Future directions for these experiments are outlined.

We report the results of a blind pulsar survey carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at 325 MHz. The survey covered about 10\% of the region between Galactic longitude 45$^{\circ} < l, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Single pulse observations, characterizing in detail, the nulling behaviour of PSR B1706$-$16 are being reported for the first time in this paper. Our regular long duration monitoring of this pulsar reveals long nulls of 2 to 5 hours with an overall nulling fraction of 31$\pm$2\%. The pulsar shows two distinct phases of emission. It is usually in an active phase, characterized by pulsations interspersed with shorter nulls, with a nulling fraction of about 15 \%, but it also rarely switches to an inactive phase, consisting of long nulls. The nulls in this pulsar are concurrent between 326.5 and 610 MHz. Profile mode changes accompanied by changes in fluctuation properties are seen in this pulsar, which switches from mode A before a null to mode B after the null. The distribution of null durations in this pulsar is bimodal. With its occasional long nulls, PSR B1706$-$16 joins the small group of intermediate nullers, which lie between the classical nullers and the intermittent pulsars. Similar to other intermediate nullers, PSR B1706$-$16 shows high timing noise, which could be due to its rare long nulls if one assumes that the slowdown rate during such nulls is different from that during the bursts., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The power spectra of intensity fluctuations in interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations can be used to estimate solar-wind speeds in the inner heliosphere. We obtain and then compare IPS spectra from both wavelet and Fourier analyses for 12 time series of the radio source 3C48; these observations were carried out at Japan’s Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory (STEL) facility, at 327 MHz. We show that wavelet and Fourier analyses yield very similar power spectra. Thus, when fitting a model to spectra to determine solar-wind speeds, both yield comparable results. Although spectra from wavelet and Fourier closely match each other for solar-wind speed purposes, those from the wavelet analysis are slightly cleaner, which is reflected in an apparent level of intensity fluctuations that is enhanced, being ≈ 13 % higher. This is potentially useful for records that show a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Active region NOAA 11158 produced many flares during its disk passage. At least two of these flares can be considered as homologous: the C6.6 flare at 06:51 UT and C9.4 flare at 12:41 UT on February 14, 2011. Both flares occurred at the same location (eastern edge of the active region) and have a similar decay of the GOES soft X-ray light curve. The associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were slow (334 and 337 km/s) and of similar apparent widths (43deg and 44deg), but they had different radio signatures. The second event was associated with a metric type II burst while the first one was not. The COR1 coronagraphs on board the STEREO spacecraft clearly show that the second CME propagated into the preceding CME that occurred 50 min before. These observations suggest that CME-CME interaction might be a key process in exciting the type II radio emission by slow CMEs.

In this study, we investigate the interplanetary consequences and travel time details of 58 coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the Sun–Earth distance. The CMEs considered are halo and partial halo events of width ${>}\,120$ °. These CMEs occurred during 2009 – 2013, in the ascending phase of the Solar Cycle 24. Moreover, they are Earth-directed events that originated close to the centre of the solar disk (within about $\pm30$ ° from the Sun’s centre) and propagated approximately along the Sun–Earth line. For each CME, the onset time and the initial speed have been estimated from the white-light images observed by the LASCO coronagraphs onboard the SOHO space mission. These CMEs cover an initial speed range of ${\sim}\,260\,\mbox{--}\,2700~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}$ . For these CMEs, the associated interplanetary shocks (IP shocks) and interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs) at the near-Earth environment have been identified from in-situ solar wind measurements available at the OMNI data base. Most of these events have been associated with moderate to intense IP shocks. However, these events have caused only weak to moderate geomagnetic storms in the Earth’s magnetosphere. The relationship of the travel time with the initial speed of the CME has been compared with the observations made in the previous Cycle 23, during 1996 – 2004. In the present study, for a given initial speed of the CME, the travel time and the speed at 1 AU suggest that the CME was most likely not much affected by the drag caused by the slow-speed dominated heliosphere. Additionally, the weak geomagnetic storms and moderate IP shocks associated with the current set of Earth-directed CMEs indicate magnetically weak CME events of Cycle 24. The magnetic energy that is available to propagate CME and cause geomagnetic storm could be significantly low.

Although originally discovered as a radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar, J1732-3131 has exhibited intriguing detections at decameter wavelengths. We report an extensive follow-up of the pulsar at 327 MHz with the Ooty radio telescope. Using the previously observed radio characteristics, and with an effective integration time of 60 hrs, we present a detection of the pulsar at a confidence level of 99.82%. The 327 MHz mean flux density is estimated to be 0.5-0.8 mJy, which establishes the pulsar to be a steep spectrum source and one of the least-luminous pulsars known to date. We also phase-aligned the radio and gamma-ray profiles of the pulsar, and measured the phase-offset between the main peaks in the two profiles to be 0.24$\pm$0.06. We discuss the observed phase-offset in the context of various trends exhibited by the radio-loud gamma-ray pulsar population, and suggest that the gamma-ray emission from J1732-3131 is best explained by outer magnetosphere models. We describe here an ongoing upgrade to the legacy Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT).The ORT is a cylindrical parabolic cylinder 530mx30m in size operating at a frequency of 326.5 (or z ~ 3.35 for the HI 21cm line). The telescope has been constructed on a north-south hill slope whose gradient is equal to the latitude of the hill, making it effectively equitorially mounted. The feed consists of an array of 1056 dipoles. The key feature of this upgrade is the digitisation and cross-correlation of the signals of every set of 4-dipoles. This converts the ORT into a 264 element interferometer with a field of view of 2 degrees x 27cos(delta) degrees . This upgraded instrument is called the Ooty Wide Field Array (OWFA). This paper briefly describes the salient features of the upgrade, as well as its main science drivers. There are three main science drivers viz. (1) Observations of the large scale distribution of HI in the post-reionisation era (2) studies of the propagation of plasma irregularities through the inner heliosphere and (3) blind surveys for transient sources. In this paper, we review the results of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations made with the legacy system of the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and compare them with the possibilities opened by the upgraded ORT, the Ooty Wide Field Array (OWFA). The stability and the sensitivity of the legacy system of ORT allowed the regular monitoring of IPS on a grid of large number of radio sources and the results of these studies have been useful to understand the physical processes in the heliosphere and space weather events, such as coronal mass ejections, interaction regions and their propagation effects. In the case of OWFA, its wide bandwidth of 38 MHz, the large field of view of $\sim$27$^\circ$ and increased sensitivity provide a unique capability for the heliospheric science at 326.5 MHz. IPS observations with the OWFA would allow one to monitor more than 5000 sources per day. This, in turn, will lead to much improved studies of space weather events and solar wind plasma, overcoming the limitations faced with the legacy system. The legacy Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) is being reconfigured as a 264-element synthesis telescope, called the Ooty Wide Field Array (OWFA). Its antenna elements are the contiguous 1.92 m sections of the parabolic cylinder. It will operate in a 38-MHz frequency band centred at 326.5 MHz and will be equipped with a digital receiver including a 264-element spectral correlator with a spectral resolution of 48 kHz. OWFA is designed to retain the benefits of equatorial mount, continuous 9-hour tracking ability and large collecting area of the legacy telescope and use modern digital techniques to enhance the instantaneous field of view by more than an order of magnitude. OWFA has unique advantages for contemporary investigations related to large scale structure, transient events and space weather watch. In this paper, we present our study on multi-frequency scatter-broadening observations of a large sample of pulsars, made using the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). For each pulsar, the scatter-broadening time scales (τsc) have been estimated at different observing frequencies and the dependence of τsc with the observing frequency, i.e., the frequency scaling index (α) has been obtained. We report estimates of α for a set of 39 pulsars, of which 31 are completely new and provide the first-time measurement on about 50% of the sample. This enhanced sample suggests that almost 65% of the pulsars have an α much lower than the conventional value of 4.4 for a Kolmogorov type turbulence spectrum, and a considerably large scattering strength. An increase in scattering strength is observed with the distance to the pulsar in the Galaxy.

XTE J1810-197 (PSR J1809-1943) was the first ever magnetar which was found to emit transient radio emission. It has recently undergone another radio and high-energy outburst. This is only the second radio outburst that has been observed from this source. We observed J1810-197 soon after its recent radio outburst at low radio frequencies using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We present the 650 MHz flux density evolution of the source in the early phases of the outburst, and its radio spectrum down to frequencies as low as 300 MHz. The magnetar also exhibits radio emission in the form of strong, narrow bursts. We show that the bursts have a characteristic intrinsic width of the order of 0.5-0.7 ms, and discuss their properties in the context of giant pulses and giant micropulses from other pulsars. We also show that the bursts exhibit spectral structures which cannot be explained by interstellar propagation effects. These structures might indicate a phenomenological link with the repeating fast radio bursts which also show interesting, more detailed frequency structures. While the spectral structures are particularly noticeable in the early phases of the outburst, these seem to be less prominent as well as less frequent in the later phases, suggesting an evolution of the underlying cause of these spectral structures., Comment: A few minor changes in the previous version; consistent with the published article

We present multi-frequency scatter broadening evolution of 29 pulsars observed with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and Long Wavelength Array (LWA). We conducted new observations using LOFAR Low Band Antennae (LBA) as well as utilized the archival data from LOFAR and LWA. This study has increased the total of all multi-frequency or wide-band scattering measurements up to a dispersion measure (DM) of 150~pc\,cm$^{-3}$ by 60\%. The scatter broadening timescale ($\tau_{sc}$) measurements at different frequencies are often combined by scaling them to a common reference frequency of 1\,GHz. Using our data, we show that the $\tau_{sc}$--DM variations are best fitted for reference frequencies close to 200--300\,MHz, and scaling to higher or lower frequencies results in significantly more scatter in data. We suggest that this effect might indicate a frequency dependence of the scatter broadening scaling index ($\alpha$). However, a selection bias due to our chosen observing frequencies can not be ruled out with the current data set. Our data did not favour any particular model of the DM -- $\tau_{sc}$ relations, and we do not see a statistically significant break at the low DM range in this relation. The turbulence spectral index ($\beta$) is found to be steeper than that is expected from a Kolmogorov spectrum. This indicates that the local ISM turbulence may have a low wave-number cutoff or presence of large scale inhomogeneities in the line of sight to some of the reported pulsars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a comparative study of the properties of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and flares associated with the solar energetic particle (SEP) events in the rising phases of solar cycles (SC) 23 (1996–1998) (22 events) and 24 (2009–2011) (20 events), which are associated with type II radio bursts. Based on the SEP intensity, we divided the events into three categories, i.e. weak (intensity This result is consistent with the asymmetry found with sunspot area and intense flares.

Emergence of complex magnetic flux in the solar active regions lead to several observational effects such as a change in sunspot area and flux embalance in photospheric magnetograms. The flux emergence also results in twisted magnetic field lines that add to free energy content. The magnetic field configuration of these active regions relax to near potential-field configuration after energy release through solar flares and coronal mass ejections. In this paper, we study the relation of flare productivity of active regions with their evolution of magnetic flux emergence, flux imbalance and free energy content. We use the sunspot area and number for flux emergence study as they contain most of the concentrated magnetic flux in the active region. The magnetic flux imbalance and the free energy are estimated using the HMI/SDO magnetograms and Virial theorem method. We find that the active regions that undergo large changes in sunspot area are most flare productive. The active regions become flary when the free energy content exceeds 50% of the total energy. Although, the flary active regions show magnetic flux imbalance, it is hard to predict flare activity based on this parameter alone.

In this paper, we study the characteristics of 46 radio-loud (RL) Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) which occurred during 1997–2006. All these RL CMEs were associated with M- and X-class flares. We selected 46 RL CMEs, out of which 26 events (57%) were associated with Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events detected at 1 AU. Furthermore, we study the link between the flare accelerated electrons in the low corona and protons at 1 AU and found a positive correlation (30%). It suggests the link between the injection sites for electrons and protons, which are most likely accelerated at the flare current sheet. We also study the relation between the CME speed and peak proton flux (>10 MeV) at 1 AU and found a good correlation (∼60%), which suggests the proton acceleration by CME driven shocks. In addition, we found two branches (lower and upper) of SEP events showing different characteristics. The lower branch SEP events are associated with impulsive rise with more proton flux whereas the upper branch SEP events exhibit gradual rise and less proton flux. We suggest that flares (current sheet) and CMEs (shocks) both are involved in the particle acceleration for the lower branch, whereas in the upper branch mostly CME driven shocks play an important role in the particle acceleration.

This paper presents an overview of CAWSES—India program, highlighting some of the Indian coordinated efforts to understand the Sun−Earth system as a whole, with special emphasis to the equatorial and low latitude phenomena. Two multi-institutional, multi-instrument campaigns, one under ‘Space Weather: Science and Applications’ and the other emphasizing tides under ‘Atmospheric Coupling Processes’ were conducted during February–April 2006. The highlights of the campaigns include improved prediction of equatorial spread-F (ESF) based on a ‘new factor’ combining the strength and asymmetry of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA); simultaneous detection of quasi-2-day wave at both E and F region heights; tomographic image showing a Traveling Ionospheric Disturbance (TID) in association with a counter electrojet (CEJ) event—all highlighting the neutral and electrodynamical coupling of the equatorial ionosphere−thermosphere regions; an unusual lowering of mesospheric temperature during a moderate geomagnetic storm—highlighting a new space weather effect; diurnal tide showing a peak amplitude of 35 m/s at 45 km in zonal wind and a significantly lower amplitude (∼15 m/s) in the meridional wind and also evidence of convective activity in the lower atmosphere influencing the tidal variability in the Mesosphere−Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region highlighting the vertical coupling of the atmospheric regions. The development of models for equatorial and low latitude ionosphere has been among the prime activities taken up under ‘Space Climate’. Two models have been developed towards this end: one based on Second Degree (SD) relationships of F region parameters to the mean sun spot number and the other a Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) based model involving expressions relating F region parameters to that representing solar and geomagnetic activities. The two models, intended for long and short term predictions, have been found to represent the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere over Indian longitudes better than the commonly used International Reference Ionosphere (IRI). Under the theme of ‘Solar Influence on Atmospheric Climate’, a study has been made on the effects of solar variability on middle atmosphere using satellite data and model simulations, highlighting the significant differences between them.

Commission 49 (Interplanetary Plasma and Heliosphere) is part of IAU Division II (Sun and Heliosphere). The research topics include large-scale solar disturbances such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), shocks, and corotating interaction regions (CIRs) propagating into the heliosphere. The disturbances propagate through the solar wind, which essentially defines the heliosphere. The solar disturbances provide large-scale laboratory to study plasma processes over various time and spatial scales, the highest spatial scale being the size of the heliosphere itself (~100 AU). These solar disturbances are related to solar activity in the form of active regions and coronal holes. Solar eruptions are accompanied by particle acceleration and the particles can be hazardous to life on earth in various ways from modifying the ionosphere to damaging space technology and increasing lifetime radiation dosage to astronauts and airplane crew. Particle acceleration in solar eruptions poses fundamental physics questions because the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. One of important processes is the particle acceleration by shocks, which occurs throughout the heliosphere. The heliosphere has both neutral and ionized material, with interesting interaction between the two components.

We present an overview of the data and models collected for the Whole Heliosphere Interval, an international campaign to study the three-dimensional solar–heliospheric–planetary connected system near solar minimum. The data and models correspond to solar Carrington Rotation 2068 (20 March – 16 April 2008) extending from below the solar photosphere, through interplanetary space, and down to Earth’s mesosphere. Nearly 200 people participated in aspects of WHI studies, analyzing and interpreting data from nearly 100 instruments and models in order to elucidate the physics of fundamental heliophysical processes. The solar and inner heliospheric data showed structure consistent with the declining phase of the solar cycle. A closely spaced cluster of low-latitude active regions was responsible for an increased level of magnetic activity, while a highly warped current sheet dominated heliospheric structure. The geospace data revealed an unusually high level of activity, driven primarily by the periodic impingement of high-speed streams. The WHI studies traced the solar activity and structure into the heliosphere and geospace, and provided new insight into the nature of the interconnected heliophysical system near solar minimum.

We analyze multi-wavelength data of a M7.9/1N class solar flare which occurred on 27 April, 2006 from AR NOAA 10875. GOES soft X-ray images provide the most likely signature of two interacting loops and their reconnection, which triggers the solar flare. TRACE 195 A images also reveal the loop-loop interaction and the formation of `X' points with converging motion (~30 km/s) at the reconnection site in-between this interacting loop system. This provides the evidence of progressive reconnection and flare maximization at the interaction site in the active region. The absence of type III radio burst during this time period indicates no opening of magnetic field lines during the flare energy release, which implies only the change of field lines connectivity/orientation during the loop-loop interaction and reconnection process. The Ondrejov dynamic radio spectrum shows an intense decimetric (DCIM) radio burst (2.5--4.5 GHz, duration ~3 min) during flare initiation, which reveals the signature of particle acceleration from the reconnection site during loop-loop interaction. The double peak structures at 4.9 and 8.8 GHz provide the most likely confirmatory signature of the loop-loop interaction at the flare site in the active region. RHESSI hard X-ray images also show the loop-top and footpoint sources of the corresponding two loop system and their coalescence during the flare maximum, which act like the current carrying flux-tubes with resultant opposite magnetic fields and the net force of attraction. We also suggest that the shear motion/rotation of the footpoint of the smaller loop, which is anchored in the opposite polarity spot, may be responsible for the flare energy buildup and then its release due to the loop-loop interaction., Comment: 42 pages; 16 figures; The Astrophysical Journal; Version 2; Some typos and references are corrected

We report the results of a multi-instrument, multi-technique, coordinated study of the solar eruptive event of 13 May 2005. We discuss the resultant Earth-directed (halo) coronal mass ejection (CME), and the effects on the terrestrial space environment and upper Earth atmosphere. The interplanetary CME (ICME) impacted the Earth’s magnetosphere and caused the most-intense geomagnetic storm of 2005 with a Disturbed Storm Time (Dst) index reaching −263 nT at its peak. The terrestrial environment responded to the storm on a global scale. We have combined observations and measurements from coronal and interplanetary remote-sensing instruments, interplanetary and near-Earth in-situ measurements, remote-sensing observations and in-situ measurements of the terrestrial magnetosphere and ionosphere, along with coronal and heliospheric modelling. These analyses are used to trace the origin, development, propagation, terrestrial impact, and subsequent consequences of this event to obtain the most comprehensive view of a geo-effective solar eruption to date. This particular event is also part of a NASA-sponsored Living With a Star (LWS) study and an on-going US NSF-sponsored Solar, Heliospheric, and INterplanetary Environment (SHINE) community investigation.
