In recent years, smog and poor air quality have become a growing environmental problem. There is a need to continuously monitor the quality of the air. The lack of selectivity is one of the most important problems limiting the use of gas sensors for this purpose. In this study, the selectivity of six amperometric gas sensors is investigated. First, the sensors were calibrated in order to find a correlation between the concentration level and sensor output. Afterwards, the responses of each sensor to single or multicomponent gas mixtures with concentrations from 50 ppb to 1 ppm were measured. The sensors were studied under controlled conditions, a constant gas flow rate of 100 mL/min and 50 % relative humidity. Single Gas Sensor Response Interpretation, Multiple Linear Regression, and Artificial Neural Network algorithms were used to predict the concentrations of SO2 and NO2. The main goal was to study different interactions between sensors and gases in multicomponent gas mixtures and show that it is insufficient to calibrate sensors in only a single gas.

In Fig. 5 on p. 311 of our Phys. Lett. B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L=2,M=1 wave, of the following waves: L=1,3,5 with M=1, and L=2 with M=2. After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η(′) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η(′)π− center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of precoilGJ×pbeamGJ.

The continuous increase in energy demand strains distribution networks, resulting in heightened power losses and a decline in overall performance. This negatively impacts distribution companies' profits and increases consumer electricity costs. Optimal distributed generation (DG) allocation in distribution networks can mitigate these issues by enhancing power supply capabilities and improving network performance. However, achieving optimal DG allocation is a complex optimization problem that requires advanced mathematical techniques. Nature-inspired (NI) swarm intelligence (SI)-based optimization techniques offer potential solutions by emulating the natural collective behaviors of animals. This paper reviews the application of NI-SI algorithms for optimal DG allocation, specifically focusing on reducing power losses as a key objective function. The review analyzes a significant body of literature demonstrating the effectiveness of NI-SI techniques in addressing power loss challenges in distribution networks. Additionally, future research directions are provided to guide further exploration in this field.

Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

A search for the exclusive production of the Zc±(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±. The data cover the range from 7 GeV to 19 GeV in the centre-of-mass energy of the photon–nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±)×σγN→Zc±(3900)N/σγN→J/ψN of 3.7×10−3 has been established at the confidence level of 90%. Keywords: COMPASS, Zc(3900), Photoproduction, Tetraquark

Exclusive production of ηπ− and η′π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η′π− over ηπ− is found for the L=1,3,5 waves, which carry non-qq¯ quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η′π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

Buffalo breeding in Italy is becoming increasingly economically attractive, with milk production in the Lazio region growing by 15% since 2004. However, the optimal physical characteristics of total mixed rations (TMR) have not been thoroughly investigated. This lack of research suggests the need for greater attention to the physical characteristics of diet, which, combined with its chemical properties, may negatively impact milk yield (MY) and milk quality (MQ), as seen in dairy cows. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the effect of diet composition, with a particular focus on the physical component, on MY and MQ, and apparent digestibility (AD) of dairy buffaloes. The study was conducted on 10 dairy buffalo farms in Amaseno valley (Italy). Monthly samples of TMR, faeces, and bulk milk were collected over a 12-month period, alongside interviews with farmers to gather information on MY and diet composition. The results revealed a high variability in the physical-chemical composition of diets across farms, attributable to differences in feeding management practices. Both chemical and physical component were found to be associated with MY, MQ and AD changes. A ration poor in roughage and rich in concentrate negatively affected MQ showing lower milk fat, and higher somatic cells count and milk urea, while a greater presence of coarse particles and high fibre were associated with lower MY. Nevertheless, coarse particles and aNDF were positively associated with milk clotting parameters and aNDF digestibility. Our study emphasised the high importance of fibre for improving MQ of dairy buffaloes.

Buffalo is a rustic animal; it can adapt and survive in various environments with different topography, climate and vegetation, and has a greater longevity than cattle. The high resistance to parasites, as well as the ability to improve the efficiency of feed consumption in case of forage shortage, means that even in marshy territories, where any other type of livestock or agricultural activity is impossible, buffalo farming can develop an economy. This review aims to present the key research topics, the evolution and geographic distribution of literature on buffalo welfare, and to underscore potentiality and existing knowledge gaps. A comprehensive search on the Scopus bibliometric database was carried out using various welfare-related keywords such as: ‘buffalo welfare’, ‘buffalo calf welfare’ and ‘buffalo heifers’ welfare’. The research identified 308 papers published in English from January 1992 to December 2023 that, after filtering, became 148 eligible records. Descriptive statistics revealed a significant exponential increase in studies on buffalo welfare since 2020, particularly in Italy, followed by Brazil. Text mining and topic analysis revealed that the most frequently mentioned terms were ‘milk’, ‘water’, ‘behaviour’, ‘farm’ and ‘stun’, confirming the role and the importance of this species in dairy production. Nine identified topics span diverse subject areas such as ‘slaughter process’, ‘dairy production’, ‘general welfare’, ‘housing system’, ‘heat stress’, ‘reproduction performance’, ‘health status’ ‘breeding management’, and ‘stress evaluation’. Although academia shows an increasing interest in buffalo behaviour and welfare, continued research is necessary to fully comprehend how to ensure the welfare of this important species.

A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH3) targets is presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a 160 GeV/c muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about four the overall statistics with respect to the previously published data taken in the year 2007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS longitudinally polarised muon beam at 160 GeV/c and a 6LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos⁡ϕh, cos⁡2ϕh and sin⁡ϕh were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables x, z or pTh and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos⁡ϕh and cos⁡2ϕh modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ω and ϕ is measured with a 190 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xF of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xF and on the invariant mass MpV of the system formed by fast proton pfast and vector meson V is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfastV resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00 of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xF and on MpV are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ω production which are absent in the case of the ϕ meson. Removing the low-mass MpV resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xF.

Abstract Relapsed pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) remains one of the leading causes of cancer mortality in children. We performed Hi-C, ATAC-seq, and RNA-seq on 12 matched diagnosis/relapse pediatric leukemia specimens to uncover dynamic structural variants (SVs) and 3D chromatin rewiring that may contribute to relapse. While translocations are assumed to occur early in leukemogenesis and be maintained throughout progression, we discovered novel, dynamic translocations and confirmed several fusion transcripts, suggesting functional and therapeutic relevance. Genome-wide chromatin remodeling was observed at all organizational levels: A/B compartments, TAD interactivity, and chromatin loops, including some loci shared by 25% of patients. Shared changes were found to drive the expression of genes/pathways previously implicated in resistance as well as novel therapeutic candidates, two of which (ATXN1 and MN1) we functionally validated. Overall, these results demonstrate chromatin reorganization under the selective pressure of therapy and offer the potential for discovery of novel therapeutic interventions.

Abstract Background Sleep is a critical component of recovery, but it can be disrupted following prolonged endurance exercise. The objective of this study was to examine the capacity of male and female professional cyclists to recover between daily race stages while competing in the 2022 Tour de France and the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, respectively. The 17 participating cyclists (8 males from a single team and 9 females from two teams) wore a fitness tracker (WHOOP 4.0) to capture recovery metrics related to night-time sleep and autonomic activity for the entirety of the events and for 7 days of baseline before the events. The primary analyses tested for a main effect of ‘stage classification’—i.e., rest, flat, hilly, mountain or time trial for males and flat, hilly or mountain for females—on the various recovery metrics. Results During baseline, total sleep time was 7.2 ± 0.3 h for male cyclists (mean ± 95% confidence interval) and 7.7 ± 0.3 h for female cyclists, sleep efficiency was 87.0 ± 4.4% for males and 88.8 ± 2.6% for females, resting HR was 41.8 ± 4.5 beats·min−1 for males and 45.8 ± 4.9 beats·min−1 for females, and heart rate variability during sleep was 108.5 ± 17.0 ms for males and 119.8 ± 26.4 ms for females. During their respective events, total sleep time was 7.2 ± 0.1 h for males and 7.5 ± 0.3 h for females, sleep efficiency was 86.4 ± 1.2% for males and 89.6 ± 1.2% for females, resting HR was 44.5 ± 1.2 beats·min−1 for males and 50.2 ± 2.0 beats·min−1 for females, and heart rate variability during sleep was 99.1 ± 4.2 ms for males and 114.3 ± 11.2 ms for females. For male cyclists, there was a main effect of ‘stage classification’ on recovery, such that heart rate variability during sleep was lowest after mountain stages. For female cyclists, there was a main effect of ‘stage classification’ on recovery, such that the percentage of light sleep (i.e., lower-quality sleep) was highest after mountain stages. Conclusions Some aspects of recovery were compromised after the most demanding days of racing, i.e., mountain stages. Overall however, the cyclists obtained a reasonable amount of good-quality sleep while competing in these physiologically demanding endurance events. This study demonstrates that it is now feasible to assess recovery in professional athletes during multiple-day endurance events using validated fitness trackers.

Organic poultry sector needs high-quality proteins sources to meet specific requirements. The EU’s organic regulation forbids synthetic amino acids; therefore, soybean, with its balanced essential amino acid content, has become the most used protein source, though much of it is imported from non-EU countries, with sustainability and crop competition issues; therefore, it should be substituted with a high-protein-value alternative such as insect meal. In this study, 900 Aviagen Savanna broilers were fed with three different organic diets: soybean only (S100), 50% black soldier fly larvae meal (BSL) and 50% soybean (BSL50), and 100% BSL only (BSL100). Broiler performance, welfare, and fatty acids (FA) were analyzed. BSL50 and BSL100 negatively affected growth, while only BSL100 worsened all of the market-related performances. Meat showed a significant increase in saturated FA (SFA) (p < 0.000) and a corresponding decrease in polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), in BSL50 and BSL100, but α-linolenic acid was not affected by BSL50 treatment (p < 0.000). The SFA increase could represent a negative aspect for human health (e.g., cardiovascular diseases), but, as reported by other authors, medium chain SFA, (i.e., lauric acid), may show beneficial effects as well (i.e., antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties).

Abstract At the Treblinka extermination and forced labor camp only a few SS soldiers and around a hundred watchmen kept guard over thousands of prisoners. Despite their lower rank in the Nazi hierarchy than SS soldiers, watchmen were vital to implementing “Operation Reinhard” in the field. Prisoners in Nazi camps were terrified by their brutality and ruthlessness. The guards were intermediaries between the camp’s inmates and the commanding crew, so in cases of a prisoners’ riot, they were the first target. The historical records mention several incidents where the watchmen died at the hands of the captives. However, little is known regarding how the dead bodies of the guards were treated nor what the funeral customs looked like in the camps. In 2019, a row of individual burials was discovered at the former Treblinka extermination and forced labor camp. Seven of those graves were explored to identify the people buried in such an unusual manner and to find out what had caused their deaths. A thorough multidisciplinary study, combining the forensic disciplines of archaeology, anthropology, medicine, and genetics provided the answer. Considering archaeological findings, it can be deduced that the graves belong to the Treblinka guards. The analysis conducted by an anthropologist indicates that the assessed biological profile aligns with the antemortem data of the Treblinka watchmen. Moreover, a study examining perimortem trauma has unveiled that out of the seven men studied, at least two met a violent demise. These findings are crucial in narrowing down the identification process. The results of our study contribute to a general understanding of the funerary customs prevalent in concentration camps worldwide. Prior to this work, there had never been any analysis or publication of the characteristics of watchmen graves at Nazi camps, making our results unique.

A novel motion atlas consisting of 56 different motions was constructed to meet needs of virtual reality (VR) video games. Within the atlas four motion categories were defined: head movements (HEAD), hand and arm movements (ARMS), whole body movements (BODY), and animations (ANIM). The data identifying the motion patterns were collected exclusively using VR system peripherals, namely goggles and controllers – for motion capture (MoCap) purposes, the HTC Vive Pro and Meta Quest 2 devices were used. By employing popular machine learning (ML) architectures, 300 motion recognition models were trained, and the most effective ones were selected. The study included classical algorithms such as k-nearest neighbors (kNN), logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), extra-trees classifier (Ensemble), random forests (RF), naive Bayes classifier (NB), and LightGBM (LGBM), which were selected based on literature review. Deep learning (DL) algorithms were also tested: convolutional neural network (CNN), transformer, and long-short-term memory (LSTM). Despite the significantly larger size of the motion atlas compared to other approaches and the limitation to naturally available data within VR systems, the best obtained CNN model achieved a weighted F-score of nearly 98% for motion recognition.

Abstract Tyrannosaurid dinosaurs dominated as predators in the Late Cretaceous of Laurasia, culminating in the evolution of the giant Tyrannosaurus rex, both the last and largest tyrannosaurid. Where and when Tyrannosaurini (T. rex and kin) originated remains unclear. Competing hypotheses place tyrannosaurin origins in Asia, or western North America (Laramidia). We report a new tyrannosaurin, Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis, from the Campanian–Maastrichtian Hall Lake Formation of New Mexico, based on a fossil previously referred to T. rex. T. mcraeensis predates T. rex by ~ 6–7 million years, yet rivaled it in size. Phylogenetic analysis recovers T. mcraeensis as sister to T. rex and suggests Tyrannosaurini originated in southern Laramidia. Evolution of giant tyrannosaurs in southern North America, alongside giant ceratopsians, hadrosaurs, and titanosaurs suggests large-bodied dinosaurs evolved at low latitudes in North America.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic impacted the practices of most mental health providers and resulted in a rapid transition to providing telemental health services, changes that were likely related to stay-at-home policies as well as increased need for services. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to examine whether these changes to practice have been sustained over time throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and whether there are differences among mental health provider type and setting. We hypothesized that there would be an increase in the number of patients seen in person after the initial surge of the pandemic in spring 2020 and subsequent discontinuation of stay-at-home policies, though with continued implementation of telemental health services across settings. MethodsThis study surveyed 235 of the 903 mental health providers who responded to a survey in spring 2020 (Time point 1) and at a 1-year follow-up in spring 2021 (Time point 2). Differences in practice adjustments, factors related to telemental health, and number of patients seen were examined across provider type (social worker, psychologist, neuropsychologist) and setting (academic medical center [AMC], community mental health, private practice, and Veterans Affairs hospital). ResultsFrom Time point 1 to Time point 2, there was a small but significant increase in the overall number of providers who were implementing telehealth (191/235, 81% to 204/235, 87%, P=.01) and there was a significant decline in canceled or rescheduled appointments (25%-50% in 2020 to 3%-7% in 2021, P

Alternative splicing (AS) is an important molecular biological mechanism regulated by complex mechanisms involving a plethora of cis and trans-acting elements. Furthermore, AS is tissue specific and altered in various pathologies, including infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic diseases. Recently developed immuno-oncological therapies include monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells targeting, among others, immune checkpoint (ICP) molecules. Despite therapeutic successes have been demonstrated, only a limited number of patients showed long-term benefit from these therapies with tumor entity-related differential response rates were observed. Interestingly, splice variants of common immunotherapeutic targets generated by AS are able to completely escape and/or reduce the efficacy of mAb- and/or CAR-based tumor immunotherapies. Therefore, the analyses of splicing patterns of targeted molecules in tumor specimens prior to therapy might help correct stratification, thereby increasing therapy success by antibody panel selection and antibody dosages. In addition, the expression of certain splicing factors has been linked with the patients’ outcome, thereby highlighting their putative prognostic potential. Outstanding questions are addressed to translate the findings into clinical application. This review article provides an overview of the role of AS in (tumor) diseases, its molecular mechanisms, clinical relevance, and therapy response.

Production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from biomass-derived glucose has great potential for synthesis of renewable fuels and chemicals. Selective glucose conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural requires a balance between Lewis and Brønsted acids for the cascade of glucose isomerization followed by fructose dehydration. A dual Brønsted-Lewis acid, phosphotungstic acid encapsulated MIL-101(Al)–NH2 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was developed to catalyze the glucose dehydration reaction. The encapsulated catalysts had a high HMF selectivity of 58% at 44% glucose conversion at 120 °C in [C4C1im]Cl. Phosphotungstic acid was uniformly dispersed in the MOF pores, which provided both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites for this cascade reaction. The Brønsted acidic phosphotungstic acid-encapsulated MOF catalyst was stable and recyclable at least four times. These findings explain the effect of phosphotungstic acid location for maximizing the HMF selectivity and suggest a new approach for the design of bifunctional solid acid catalysts for selective HMF production from glucose. Moreover, the tunability of the acid properties of the encapsulated MOF catalysts provides opportunities for other biomass transformations.

In this study, we investigate the influence of cold-plasma-induced enhanced performance and efficiency of SAPO-34 membranes in the separation of CO2 and CH4 mixtures. Placing the herein presented research in a broader context, we aim to address the question of whether cold plasma can significantly impact the membrane performance. We subjected SAPO-34 membranes to plasma mild disturbances and analyzed their performance in separating CO2 and CH4. Our findings reveal a notable enhancement in membrane efficiency and sustained performance when exposed to cold plasma. The pulsed plasma separation displayed improved structural integrity, and the experimental results indicated that the linear structure of CO₂ facilitates the distortion of electron clouds in response to the electric field, a property known as polarizability, which aids in effective separation. Plausible mechanistic insight indicated that the intermolecular forces facilitated an integral role in SAPO-34 membranes exhibiting strong electrostatic interactions. In conclusion, our research highlights the potential of cold plasma as a promising technique for improving the performance of SAPO-34 membranes in gas mixtures at atmospheric pressures, providing valuable insights for optimizing membrane technology in carbon capture and gas separation applications.

Abstract This research focuses on the automation of an existing structural health monitoring system of a bridge using the BIMification approach. This process starts with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of an existing bridge for the numerical calculations of static and dynamic parameters. The validation of the FE model and existing SHM system was carried out by the field load testing (Static and dynamic) of the bridge. Further, this study tries to fill the research gap in the area of automatic FE model generation by using a novel methodology that can generate a BIM-based FE model using Visual Programming Language (VPL) scripts. This script can be exported to any FE software to develop the geometry of the FE model. Moreover, the SHM devices are deployed to the Building Information modelling (BIM) model of the bridge to generate the BIM-based sensory model (as per the existing SHM system). In this way, the BIM model is used to manage and monitor the SHM system and control its sensory elements. These sensors are then linked with the self-generated (Internet of Things) IoT platform (coded in Arduino), developing a smart SHM system of the bridge. Resultantly, the system features visualisation and remote accessibility to bridge health monitoring data.

Abstract The infamous Treblinka camp was one of numerous extermination camps throughout Poland, where Germans carried out mass killings of Jews. There were two camps in Treblinka, AL Treblinka I, a forced labor camp, and KL Treblinka II, the site of the extermination camp. Treblinka I held captives of various origins and ethnic backgrounds who were serving their sentences by working in a pre-existing gravel pit. Many of those prisoners perished in the camp, and it was believed that the principal causes of their death were attributed to the horrific sanitary conditions in the camp as well as the strenuous hard work of daily life. In 2019, archaeologists uncovered a clandestine mass burial pit that contained commingled human skeleton remains at the Execution Site of the former Treblinka I camp. It was estimated that there were a minimum of forty-nine people in the pit. Within months, an anthropologist performed biological profile assessments and detailed trauma analysis on the recovered skeletal parts. The main goal was to study perimortem trauma patterns to infer the cause and manner of death of the victims. We hypothesized that the victims did not die solely because of the camps’ conditions but were brutally slaughtered by the camp guards. Our results were later compared with the survivors’ written testimonies. As a result of our research, we were able to show that the Treblinka I captives’ death was extremely brutal and that the killing methods were varied. This led us to conclude that multiple assailants were involved in the killing spree. All of our results were consistent with the written witness testimonies, which concurs with our skeletal material analysis that proves the atrocities committed by the Nazis on their civilian prisoners during the war took place.

The disordered arrangement and thereof inferior conductivity of 2D MOF sheets seriously hinder their practical application. Herein, we propose in situ transformation strategy to architect vertically oriented bimetallic CuNi-MOF as a self-supporting electrode, leading to a decuple high specific capacitance of 1262 C g-1 in comparison with the pristine Ni-MOF powder of 114 C g-1 at 2 A g-1. DFT calculations reveal that introduction of Cu can modulate the electronic structure of metal centers in the Ni-MOF sheets and optimize electrical conductivity. Our strategy is promising to maximize the utilization of MOF superiorities for optimizing their electrochemical performance.

Despite considerable health consequences from preterm births, their incidence remains unchanged over recent decades, due partially to limited screening methods and limited use of extant methods. Wearable technology offers a novel, noninvasive, and acceptable way to track vital signs, such as maternal heart rate variability (mHRV). Previous research observed that mHRV declines throughout the first 33 weeks of gestation in term, singleton pregnancies, after which it improves. The aim of this study was to explore whether mHRV inflection is a feature of gestational age or an indication of time to delivery. This retrospective case-control study considered term and preterm deliveries. Remote data collection via non-invasive wearable technology enabled diverse participation with subjects representing 42 US states and 16 countries. Participants (N = 241) were retroactively identified from the WHOOP (Whoop, Inc.) userbase and wore WHOOP straps during singleton pregnancies between March 2021 and October 2022. Mixed effect spline models by gestational age and time until birth were fit for within-person mHRV, grouped into preterm and term births. For term pregnancies, gestational age (Akaike information criterion (AIC) = 26627.6, R2m = 0.0109, R2c = 0.8571) and weeks until birth (AIC = 26616.3, R2m = 0.0112, R2c = 0.8576) were representative of mHRV trends, with significantly stronger fit for weeks until birth (relative log-likelihood ratio = 279.5). For preterm pregnancies, gestational age (AIC = 1861.9, R2m = 0.0016, R2c = 0.8582) and time until birth (AIC = 1848.0, R2m = 0.0100, R2c = 0.8676) were representative of mHRV trends, with significantly stronger fit for weeks until birth (relative log-likelihood ratio = 859.4). This study suggests that wearable technology, such as the WHOOP strap, may provide a digital biomarker for preterm delivery by screening for changes in nighttime mHRV throughout pregnancy that could in turn alert to the need for further evaluation and intervention.

ABSTRACTThe human Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), as a member of the human γ herpes viruses (HHV), is known to be linked with distinct tumor types. It is a double-stranded DNA virus and its genome encodes among others for 48 different microRNAs (miRs). Current research demonstrated a strong involvement of certain EBV-miRs in molecular immune evasion mechanisms of infected cells by, e.g., the disruption of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class Ia and NKG2D functions. To determine novel targets of EBV-miRs involved in immune surveillance, ebv-miR-BART7-3p, an EBV-encoded miR with high expression levels during the different lytic and latent EBV life cycle phases, was overexpressed in human HEK293T cells. Using a cDNA microarray-based comparative analysis, 234 (229 downregulated and 5 upregulated) deregulated human transcripts were identified in ebv-miR-BART7-3p transfectants, which were mainly involved in cellular processes and molecular binding. A statistically significant downregulation of the anti-proliferative and tumor-suppressive hsa-miR-34A and the anti-viral interferon lambda (IFNL)3 mRNA was found. The ebv-miR-BART7-3p-mediated downregulation of IFNL3 expression was due to a direct interaction with the IFNL3 3’-untranslated region (UTR) as determined by luciferase reporter gene assays including the identification of the accurate ebv-miR-BART7-3p binding site. The effect of ebv-miR-BART7-3p on the IFNL3 expression was validated both in human cell lines in vitro and in human tissue specimen with known EBV status. These results expand the current knowledge of EBV-encoded miRs and their role in immune evasion, pathogenesis and malignant transformation.

This paper presents and discusses historical and archaeological data regarding war crimes committed by Nazi occupants during Second World War in the vicinity of the SS Prison Camp Falstad in Central Norway, and the issue of still unknown graves of executed prisoners in the Falstad Forest. Specialists from several Norwegian and foreign institutions are at present developing a set of advanced methods to be deployed during surveys of the Forest in search of hidden graves.
