Report on epizootic lymphangitis, a chronic contagious zoonosis of Equidae caused by Histoplasma capsulatum var. farciminosum characterized clinically by pyogranulomatous multifocal dermatitis with lymphadenitis, is rare in donkeys. This case reports a 6-year-old, 200-kg local male donkey at the University of Ibadan zoological garden with wounds on its dorsum which developed into ulcerative lesions on the left cranial thoracic region. The lesions were also along the lymphatic drainage of the left infrascapular area down to the girth with extensive nodular lesions on the skin, characteristic focal ulcers and fenestrations along the left flank. The ulcers were recurrent with blockage of the left lymphatic drainage causing ventral edema of the sternum extending to the prepuce and the left forelimb. The wound was managed for about 1 year but remained persistent with episodes of apparent healing, scarification and recurrence. Tentative diagnosis of epizootic lymphangitis was made. Blood sample, pus swab and aspirated exudate were collected for confirmatory diagnosis using light microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect and amplify a fragment of the internal transcribed spacer-2 (ITS-2) gene. These techniques detected Histoplasma capsulatum var. farciminosum, which informed the use of appropriate therapeutic agents, providone iodine wash, and griseofulvin cream and tablets for 3 weeks to treat the disease condition.

A case of high grade large cell lymphoma was diagnosed in a dog at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Ibadan. The animal was a male Boerboel over six years old. The case was monitored clinically until necropsy where cytological, gross and histological techniques were used for detailed examination of morphological features of the tumour. The morphological pattern and classification schemes of lymphoma were generally reviewed. The relevance of other diagnostic methods was em-phasised.

Haematological and serum biochemical values are useful guides and biomarkers in health and diseases for reaching a diagnosis, estimating disease prognosis and monitoring treatment progress, in mammals. Reference ranges for some parameters differ among species of mammals and between sexes within a species. There is dearth of information on standard reference value for blood parameters for Nigerian indigenous monkeys. Whole blood and serum samples obtained from 50 apparently healthy adult monkeys in both captivity and from the wild in southwest Nigeria were subjected to haematology and serum biochemistry to obtain preliminary reference values for haematological and serum biochemical analytes for Cercocebus sebaeus (Green monkey), Cercopithecus mona (Mona monkey), Erythrocebus patas (Patas monkey) and Papio anubis (Anubis baboon). Numerical data were summarized as mean and standard deviation and subjected to statistical analysis; Student t test and analysis of variance, to compare values of blood parameters obtained between species and gender. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. The hematocrit of male animals were significantly higher than that of females (P=0.01) in all the 4 species studied but there was no significant difference in other blood parameters such as total white blood cell and the differential counts, platelet count, serum aspartate transferase, alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, total plasma protein, albumin, and globulin concentrations between the sexes. Generally, there was no significant difference between total white blood cell and the differential counts, hematocrit, red cell count, haemoglobin concentration, platelet count, serum aspartate transferase, alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, total plasma protein, albumin, and globulin concentrations among the monkey species.

Accurate determination of temperature is crucial in the diagnosis of febrile conditions. Although fewer techniques have proven as useful and reliable a predictor of core body temperature as the rectal thermometry, the process of obtaining the rectal temperature could be stressful in dogs. The infrared thermometry is a noncontact device used for measuring body temperature, with advantages which include speed, convenience, and reduced stress to the animals and reduced occupational risks to the animal handler. Therefore, there is the need to assess the consistency and agreement between non-contact infrared thermometry and traditional rectal thermometry in body temperature estimation. This study compared and assessed the sensitivity of non-contact infrared thermometer used on the forehead and nasal regions respectively with that of a rectal thermometer in dogs for body temperature estimation. One hundred and thirty (130) dogs presented for veterinary attention at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), University of Ibadan, Nigeria were enrolled in this study during August to September 2014, irrespective of sex, age, breed or health status. Temperatures of dogs presented at the clinic were obtained using both multiple non-contact infrared thermometric measures obtained in the nasal and frontal head regions; and by rectal temperature. A multivariate cross-matrix analysis was used to assess the difference in measurements between the rectal thermometry and non-contact infrared thermometry. Descriptive statistics was used to compare variation and trend regularity of the nasal and fore-head infrared thermometry. A logistic regression of the difference in measurements was computed at 95% confidence interval and P0.05. The mean difference revealed that the rectal temperature was 5.330C higher than the non-contact infrared forehead-based temperature and 7.570C higher than nasal-based temperature measurements respectively. The Bland-Altman (B-A) plot showed that the 95% limits of agreement between the frontal and nasal obtained infrared laser thermometry methods. Temperature measure obtained using non-contact infrared thermometry (forehead and nasal region of the head) was poor in consistency and agreement compared to rectal thermometry. Usefulness of non-contact forehead infrared thermometry in routine clinical practice as a close estimate of core body temperature depends on accurate calibration and therefore not recommended.

A 4 year old African dwarf crocodile that had been domiciled at the Zoological Gardens, University of Ibadan for 2 years was presented with a history of anorexia of two weeks’ duration and reluctance to move for about a week prior to presentation. Physical examination revealed body curvatures and radiography was requested. Dorsoventral, ventrodorsal and left lateral views were done and these revealed multiple curvatures of the cervical, thoracic and caudal vertebrae. There appeared to be a generalized reduction in bone density although there were no visible fractures. There was a lateral compression of the right lung and a downward displacement of the cardiac silhouette. There were also several mineral opacities within the stomach which are suspected to be stones. Metabolic Bone Disease is a non-infectious disease common to reptiles in captivity. It is a consequence of improper diet and husbandry. A diet of flesh without bone or calcium supplements can cause an imbalance leading to the signs and symptoms seen. This can also be worsened by lack of, or insufficient, Vitamin D. It has severe effects in young animals as they require a higher nutritional plane to meet growth requirements. It is essential that reptiles in captivity receive calcium supplementation to maintain calcium: phosphorus balance and adequate exposure to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light to encourage the synthesis of Vitamin D in the skin. These will prevent the production of parathyroid hormone which causes bone resorption and leads to swollen misshapen bones, fractures, twisting of the spine and kidney damage.
