Abstract

The threat posed to humanity by global warming has led scientists to question the nature of their activities and the need to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from research. Until now, most studies have aimed at quantifying the carbon footprints and relatively less works have addressed the ways GHG emissions can be significantly reduced. A factor two reduction by 2030 implies to think beyond increases in the efficacy of current processes, which will have a limited effect, and beyond wishful thinking about large new sources of energy. Hence, choices among research questions or allocated means within a given field will be needed. They can be made in light of the perceived societal utility of research activities. Here, we addressed the question of how scientists perceive the impact of GHG reduction on their discipline and a possible trade-off between the societal utility of their discipline and an acceptable level of GHG emissions. We conducted 28 semi-directive interviews of French astrophysicists from different laboratories. Our most important findings are that, for most researchers, astronomy is considered to have a positive societal impact mainly regarding education but also because of the fascination it exerts on at least a fraction of the general public. Technological applications are also mentioned but with relatively less emphasis. The reduction of GHG emissions is believed to be necessary and most often reductions within the private-sphere have been achieved. 2. Rare Postoperative Complication of Esophageal Atresia after Open Thoracotomy Repair in Newborn—Lung Torsion: A Case Report

Abstract

In this case report, we described a rare complication—lung torsion after esophageal atresia repair in a newborn. Torsion of the lung is a critical condition in which either the entire lung or a lung lobe twists, leading to occlusion of blood vessels and airways. The patient’s clinical condition was poor after the primary operation. An emergency thoracotomy showed 180° torsion of the right upper lobe (RUL) and right middle lobe (RML). After detorsion, perioperatively, the lung was gradually reperfused and had a normal appearance. After surgery, the patient was unstable, which culminated in a fatal end (bradycardia, reperfusion injury). Immediate intervention can preserve the affected lung or lung lobe. However, pulmonary torsion typically has a poor prognosis due to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Additionally, diagnosis in the neonatal period is even more challenging because the clinical symptoms are nonspecific. In any case, the question is whether detorsion is the right solution or whether a segmentectomy is necessary.

3. Pilot study: Significance of I-FABP2 in the diagnosis of acute abdominal episodes in children

Abstract

Background: Pediatric abdominal conditions, including necrotizing gastrointestinal diseases, pose significant diagnostic challenges due to clinic symptoms and limited diagnostic tools. Intestinal fatty acid binding protein 2 (I-FABP2) has emerged as a potential biomarker for intestinal damage, but its efficacy in diagnosing pediatric intestinal necrosis remains under explored. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 55 pediatric patients presenting with abdominal pain and suspected intestinal necrosis or intestinal perforation. Clinical, laboratory, and radiological data were collected, and intraoperative assessment of bowel necrosis was performed. Gene expression of I-FABP2 in peripheral blood was measured using Real-Time RT-PCR, and correlations with surgery and laboratory parameters were analyzed. Results: Intraoperative assessment revealed a moderate sensitivity (61.1%) and specificity (73.7%) of I-FABP2 in identifying bowel necrosis. Positive predictive value (PPV) was high (81.5%), indicating a high likelihood of the condition when I-FABP2 is positive. However, the negative predictive value (NPV) was limited (50%), suggesting challenges in confidently excluding necrosis based on negative I-FABP2 results. Correlations were observed between I-FABP2 expression and elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and white blood cell count (WBC), indicating its association with inflammatory processes. Conclusions: While I-FABP2 shows promise as a biomarker for pediatric intestinal necrosis, its diagnostic utility may be enhanced when considered alongside other clinical parameters. Further research and validation studies are warranted to refine its clinical application and improve diagnostic accuracy in pediatric gastrointestinal conditions.

Abstract

As global energy demand continues to rise, integrating renewable energy sources (RES) into power systems has become increasingly important. However, the intermittent nature of RES, such as solar and wind, presents challenges for maintaining a stable energy supply. To address this issue, energy storage systems are essential. One promising technology is micro-compressed air energy storage (micro-CAES), which stores excess energy as compressed air and releases it when needed to balance supply and demand. This study investigates the integration of micro-CAES with RES in a 19-home microgrid in northern Portugal. The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a microgrid configuration that includes 100 kW of solar PV, 70 kW of wind power, and a 50 kWh micro-CAES system. Using real-world data on electricity consumption and local renewable potential, a simulation is conducted to assess the performance of this system. The findings reveal that this configuration can supply up to 68.8% of the annual energy demand, significantly reducing reliance on the external grid and enhancing the system’s resilience. These results highlight the potential of micro-CAES to improve the efficiency and sustainability of small-scale renewable energy systems, demonstrating its value as a key component in future energy solutions.

Abstract

Understanding the molecular factors involved in the development of uterine myomas may result in the use of pharmacological drugs instead of aggressive surgical treatment. ANG1, CaSR, and FAK were examined in myoma and peripheral tissue samples taken from women after myoma surgery and in normal uterine muscle tissue samples taken from the control group. Tests were performed using tissue microarray immunohistochemistry. No statistically significant differences in ANG1 expression between the tissue of the myoma, the periphery, and the normal uterine muscle tissue of the control group were recorded. The CaSR value was reduced in the myoma and peripheral tissue and normal in the group of women without myomas. FAK expression was also lower in the myoma and periphery compared to the healthy uterine myometrium. Calcium supplementation could have an effect on stopping the growth of myomas.

6. On the optimal Cs/Co ratio responsible for the N2O decomposition activity of the foam supported cobalt oxide catalysts

Abstract

Structured foam catalysts for N2O decomposition containing Co and Cs were prepared via conventional and organic-assisted impregnation method (acetic acid, citric acid, glycerol, glycine, urea). Organic-assisted impregnation caused higher abundance of smaller particles and different faceting. Glycerol usage leads to increase of specific rate constant for N2O decomposition, urea leads to its decrease. The optimal amount of Cs in Co3O4 deposited on the foam was 2–3 times higher than in the bulk Co3O4-Cs due to the dispersion of part of the Cs species over the bare support. The use of glycerol caused a better surface coverage by spinel phase, thus leaving less space for spreading the cesium on the support instead of on the spinel phase. The positive effect of glycerol on the performance of the catalysts with optimized cesium content was attributed to refaceting of the spinal nanocrystals, and greater resistance of the (100) planes to gaseous NO/H2O contaminates.

7. A Review of Energy Overconsumption Reduction Methods in the Utilization Stage in Compressed Air Systems

Abstract

Pneumatic systems use the energy of compressed air to carry out manufacturing automation processes through the implementation of complex handling and motion tasks. However, these systems are energy intensive: it is estimated that pneumatic systems in manufacturing plants consume approximately 10% of all electricity consumed in the industrial sector. At the same time, the energy efficiency of the whole pneumatic system is observed to be 6–10%, due to the compression process, oversizing, and overconsumption. There are numerous solutions in the literature focusing on improving efficiency at the compression stage of utilization; however, for the utilization stage, there is a lack of systematization and grouping of these solutions. The following review will summarize current knowledge about the utilization stage and methods for improving oversizing and energy overconsumption. In addition, a method of exergy analysis for pneumatic systems will be presented, which is a very useful tool to assess the efficiency of these systems.

Abstract

Cobalt spinel-ceria catalysts of various compositions were tested for isotopic 16O2/18O2 and 18O2/16Osurf exchange. The onset of the exchange was dramatically decreased down to 140 °C, compared to 310–350 °C observed for the single components. The temperature evolution of the 16O2, 16O18O and 18O2 profiles implied competing homogeneous (R0) and heterogeneous, R1 and R2, exchange processes. Their relative contributions were changing with the Co/Ce ratio and temperature. The isotopic exchange processes are spatially separated, with R0 occurring preferentially on the cobalt spinel component, whereas the single (R1) and double (R2) exchange on the ceria moiety.

Abstract

Pneumatic machines and systems are highly popular in the automation and mechanisation of production lines in many industry sectors, such as, e.g., food, automotive, production, and packaging. However, the energy efficiency of the pneumatic system is very low at about 10 to 20% The exhaust air from pneumatic machines has high energy, which is considered waste. This study introduces a novel energy recovery machine designed for integration into industrial compressed air systems. The authors describe the potential of the recovery machine within an industrial environment and present a developed exhaust air recovery system which collects exhaust air and converts it into electricity. Comprehensive industrial tests were conducted to evaluate its performance. The results, along with a detailed analysis, are presented, thereby showing there machine’s capabilities in recovering energy from compressed air processes. This research provides valuable insights into the practical implementation and benefits of deploying such energy recovery systems at an industrial scale. The findings demonstrate the machine’s potential to enhance energy efficiency and reduce operational costs in a wide array of industrial applications that are reliant on compressed air.

Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. 12. N2O Decomposition on Singly and Doubly (K and Li)-Doped Co3O4Nanocubes─Establishing Key Factors Governing Redox Behavior of Catalysts

Abstract

The intimate mechanism of N2O decomposition on bare and redox-tuned Co3O4nanocubes (achieved by single (Li or K) and double (Li and K) doping) was elucidated. The catalysts synthesized by the hydrothermal method were characterized by X-ray electron absorption fine structure measurements, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Kelvin Probe techniques. TPSR and steady-state isothermal catalytic tests reveal that the N2O turnover frequencies are critically sensitive to the work function of the catalysts, adjusted purposely by doping. For the catalysts obtained by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, lithiation of the Co3O4nanocubes leads to the formation of {Li’8a, Co·16d} species, decreasing steadily the work function and the activity, while for the catalysts prepared by postsynthesis impregnation, formation of {Li’8a, Co’16d,Co··16c} species leads to a volcano-type dependence of the catalytic activity and the work function in parallel. The beneficial effect of potassium was discussed in terms of mitigation of surface potential buildup due to the accumulation of ionosorbed oxygen intermediates (surface electrostatics), which hinders the interfacial electron transfer. Analysis of the catalytic activity response to the redox tuning of Co3O4, substantiated by DFT calculations, allowed for a straightforward conceptualization of the redox nature of the N2O decomposition in terms of the lineup of frontier orbitals of the N2O/N2O–and O2–/O2reactants with the surface DOS structure and the resultant molecular orbital interactions. The positions of the virtual bonding 3πg0(N2O)−α-3dz2and the occupied 2πg1(O2–)−α-3dz2states relative to the Fermi energy level play a crucial role in the regulation of the forward and backward interfacial electron transfer events, which drive the redox process.

Abstract

One of the many factors involved in the development of uterine fibroids is vitamin D deficiency. One aspect of this deficiency is decreased serum concentration of calcidiol-25(OH)D, a metabolite of D3 vitamin. The active form of vitamin D3, which arises after numerous enzymatic reactions, is calcitriol-1,25(OH)2D3; this compound is transported to various body tissues. Vitamin D possesses extra-genomic effects due to its influence on various signaling pathways, i.e., through activating tyrosine kinases and by genomic effects via binding to a specific nuclear receptor, vitamin D receptor (VDR). The vitamin D/VDR complex regulates the expression of genes and is involved in the pathogenesis of fibroids. Numerous studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation reduces fibroid size. It has also been shown that the expression of VDR in myoma tissue is significantly lower than in the uterine muscle tissue at the tumor periphery. However, the expression of VDR in non-myoma uterine muscle has not previously been investigated. Our VDR expression studies were performed immunohistochemically with tissue microarrays (TMA) in three tissue groups: 98 uterine myoma tissues, 98 uterine tissues (tumor margin), and 12 tissues of normal uterine muscle (i.e., without fibroids). A statistical analysis showed significantly lower VDR expression in uterine muscle at the periphery of the fibroid than in healthy uterine muscle. Lower expression of VDR at the periphery of the myoma compared to that in normal uterine muscle may indicate potential for new myomas. This observation and the described reduction in the size of fibroids after vitamin D supplementation supports the hypothesis of causal development of uterine fibroids and may be useful for the prevention of re-development in the event of their excision from the uterus.

Abstract

This study presents the research and development possibilities of an expander for compressed air energy storage systems (CAES). The computer simulations made by the authors aim to find the optimal working parameters of the piston engine. The criteria for evaluating engine operation and the objects of analysis are the compressed air engine system’s efficiency and the electrical power output. Sensitivity analysis was performed on well-suited system parameters and geometrical sizes of the energy utilisation element. Appropriate selection achieves not only higher efficiency but also allows the system to be scaled to the end-user’s needs.

Abstract

Formation of the inversion layer causes a lack of vertical movement of the atmosphere and the occurrence of long-lasting high concentrations of pollution. The new invention makes use of shock waves, created by explosions of a mixture of flammable gases and air. These shock waves destroy the structure of the temperature inversion layer in the atmosphere and restore natural convection. Restoring vertical movements within the atmosphere causes a reduction in air pollution at the ground level. The system was tested at full technical scale in the environment. Preliminary effects indicate an average 24% reduction in PM10 concentration in the smog layer at ground level up to 20 m, with the device operating in 11-min series consisting of 66 explosions. It was also shown that the device is able to affect a larger area, at least 4 km2.

Abstract

Weighted and controlled frames have been introduced recently to improve the numerical efficiency of iterative algorithms for inverting the frame operator. In this paper we develop systematically these notions, including their mutual relationship. We will show that controlled frames are equivalent to standard frames and so this concept gives a generalized way to check the frame condition, while offering a numerical advantage in the sense of preconditioning. Next, we investigate weighted frames, in particular their relation to controlled frames. We consider the special case of semi-normalized weights, where the concepts of weighted frames and standard frames are interchangeable. We also make the connection with frame multipliers. Finally we analyze weighted frames numerically. First we investigate three possibilities for finding weights in order to tighten a given frame, i.e., decrease the frame bound ratio. 19. Exhaust Noise Reduction by Application of Expanded Collecting System in Pneumatic Tools and Machines

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate how to reduce the noise level of expanded air from pneumatic tools. Instead of a muffler, we propose the expanded collecting system, where the air expands through the pneumatic tube and expansion collector. We have elaborated a mathematical model which illustrates the dynamics of the air flow, as well as the acoustic pressure at the end of the tube. The computational results were compared with experimental data to check the air dynamics and sound pressure. Moreover, the study presents the methodology of noise measurement generated in a pneumatic screwdriver in a quiet back room and on a window-fitting stand in a production hall. In addition, we have performed noise measurements for the pneumatic screwdriver and the pneumatic screwdriver on an industrial scale. These measurements prove the noise reduction of the pneumatic tools when the expanded collecting system is used. When the expanded collecting system was applied to the screwdriver, the measured Sound Pressure Level (SPL) decreased from 87 to 80 dB(A).

Abstract

One of the practical efforts in the development of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts applicable to fuel cells and metal-air batteries is focused on reducing the cost of the catalysts production. Herein, we have examined the ORR performance of cheap, non-noble metal based catalysts comprised of nanosized mixed Fe-Co spinels deposited on N,S-doped mesoporous carbon support (N,S-MPC). The effect of the chemical and phase composition of the active phase on the selectivity of catalysts in the ORR process in alkaline media was elucidated by changing the iron content. The synthesized materials were thoroughly characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy (RS). Detailed S/TEM/EDX and Raman analysis of the phase composition of the synthesized ORR catalysts revealed that the dominant mixed iron-cobalt spinel is accompanied by minor fractions of bare cobalt and highly dispersed spurious iron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4). The contribution of individual phases and their degree of agglomeration on the carbon support directly influence the selectivity of the obtained catalysts. It was found that the mixed iron-cobalt spinel single phase gives rise to significant improvement of the catalyst selectivity towards the desired 4e− reaction pathway, in comparison to the reference bare cobalt spinel, whereas spurious iron oxides play a negative role for the catalyst selectivity.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań parametrów geotechnicznych gruntów pokryw stokowych pochodzących z doliny potoku Siarki w okolicach miejscowości Siary i Owczary w Beskidzie Niskim, gdzie w czerwcu 2010 r. wystąpiły liczne ruchy masowe. Wyniki badań wykazały, że badane grunty stanowią głównie pyły ilaste z piaskiem oraz żwirem, charakteryzujące się niską i średnią plastycznością. Stwierdzono, że badane grunty charakteryzują się odpowiednią zagęszczalnością z punktu widzenia ich przydatności do celów budowy nasypów drogowych. Z drugiej strony grunty te są wrażliwe na zmiany wilgotności, co wykazały wyniki badań nośności i wytrzymałość na ścinanie, zwłaszcza w przypadku wartości spójności. Ogólnie stwierdzono, że grunty te mogą stanowić dobre podłoże drogowe w miejscach suchych lub pod warunkiem ich odizolowania od wpływu wody gruntowej.

Abstract

A series of Nb-doped (0–23 wt%) cryptomelane catalyst (Nb-K-OMS-2) was synthesized and thoroughly characterized by XRD, TEM/EDX, XRF, XPS, XAS, UV-Vis, and Raman techniques corroborated by the work function measurements. The obtained catalysts were tested for soot oxidation (Printex U) in model tight and loose contact modes. It was shown that the catalytic properties of the Nb-K-OMS-2 are controlled by the amount of Nb dopant in a strongly non-monotonous way. The introduction of niobium gives rise to the strain in the cryptomelane lattice, accompanied by significant Mn+3/Mn+4 ratio variations and concomitant work function changes. The isotopic exchange experiments revealed that the catalytic activity of the Nb-OMS-2 catalysts in soot combustion proceeds via the pathways, where both the activated suprafacial 18O and the surface 16O2− species participate together in the reaction. The niobium doping level controls the non-monotonous changes of the catalyst work function and the lattice strain, and variations of these parameters correlate well with the observed deSoot activity. To our best knowledge, the role of the lattice strain of the cryptomelane catalysts was documented for the first time in this study.

Abstract

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań parametrów geotechnicznych łupków pstrych pochodzących z okolic Szymbarku k. Gorlic. Badania obejmowały oznaczenie składu uziarnienia, granic konsystencji, parametrów zagęszczalności, współczynnika filtracji, wskaźnika pęcznienia oraz wytrzymałości na ścinanie. Wykazano, że badane grunty charakteryzują się dobrą zagęszczalnością i niską wodoprzepuszczalnością. Ze względu na skład uziarnienia oraz granice konsystencji badane łupki zostały określone jako utwory o aktywności koloidalnej typowej dla iłów. Wartości wskaźników pęcznienia wyniosły 8–15%, co pozwala sklasyfikować badane grunty jako utwory o średniej ekspansywności. Badania wytrzymałości na ścinanie wykazały, że przy wilgotności zbliżonej do optymalnej łupki pstre posiadają wysokie wartości zarówno kąta tarcia wewnętrznego, jak i spójności, a przy bardzo niskiej wilgotności charakteryzują się wytrzymałością typową dla gruntów skalistych. Z kolei przy wilgotności większej od optymalnej, odpowiadającej konsystencji plastycznej, ich wytrzymałość na ścinanie zmniejsza się znacznie, a wartości kąta tarcia wewnętrznego i spójności ją opisujące są zbliżone do wartości podawanych w literaturze dla gruntów ilastych.

25. Implementation of Energy Harvesting System of Wastes of Compressed Air Wastes for Electrical Steel Cutting Line

Abstract

The pneumatic systems are commonly used in industrial plants to power pneumatic machines and tools. However, since production of compressed air is quite expensive, manufacturing plants are trying to reduce the operating costs of pneumatic systems by improving their energy efficiency. There are three main methods of reducing costs in these systems: averting energy losses, limiting input energy and harvesting energy wastes of compressed air. In this article, the authors focus on the last method mentioned above - recovering energy wastes from cutting line of electrical steel in a production plant, by using their own invention. The maximum power Pe of the device is changing from 190 W to 60 W and it depends on the value of overpressure in the tank. In one hour, the device generates about 0.07 kWh energy and uses about 3.8 m3 of air in overpressure of 6 bar.

The evaluation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, as one of the most important antioxidative defence enzymes, in seminal plasma of patients consulting for male infertility was presented in the article. The study included also the determination of its influence on selected human semen quality parameters. The material represents semen samples obtained from 15 men, which were divided into two groups: Group I (n=10) including patients consulting for infertility and Group II (n=5) containing healthy sperm donors as a control. All of the semen samples were cryopreserved and stored in liquid nitrogen. The frozen samples were thawed at the same time and then SOD activity was determined spectrophotometrically. The analysis of the investigations results indicates a significantly lower semen SOD activity detected in oligoasthenozoospermic patients, comparing to the activity found in normospermic men. The study showed a positive correlation between SOD activity in seminal plasma and semen quality parameters--sperm concentration and overall motility, which are regarded as the most important for normal fertilizing ability of the spermatozoa. Significantly lower SOD activity in seminal plasma of infertile patients, comparing to healthy sperm donors, as well as positive correlation and beneficial impact of SOD activity on human semen quality parameters seem to confirm the observations, that decreased seminal plasma scavenger antioxidant capacity, particularly in form of low SOD activity, can be responsible for male infertility. This trial shows that SOD activity survey in seminal plasma could be a useful tool for determining sperm fertilization potential and could improve the diagnosis of male infertility.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: KIR2DS5 gene encodes an activating natural killer cell receptor whose ligand is not known. It was recently reported to affect the outcome of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In our studies on KIR2DS5 gene associations with human diseases, we compared the frequencies of this gene in patients and relevant controls. Typing for KIR2DS5 gene was performed by either individual or multiplex polymerase chain reactions which, when compared in the same samples, gave concordant results. We noted an apparently protective effect of KIR2DS5 gene presence in several clinical conditions, but not in others. Namely, this effect was observed in ankylosing spondylitis (p=0.003, odds ratio [OR]=0.47, confidence interval [CI]=0.28-0.79), endometriosis (p=0.03, OR=0.25, CI = 0.07-0.82) and acute rejection of kidney graft (p=0.0056, OR=0.44, CI=0.24-0.80), but not in non-small-cell lung carcinoma, rheumatoid arthritis, spontaneous abortion, or leukemia (all p>0.05). In addition, the simultaneous presence of KIR2DS5 gene and HLA-C C1 allotype exhibited an even stronger protective effect on ankylosing spondylitis (p=0.0003, OR=0.35, CI=0.19-0.65), whereas a lack of KIR2DS5 and the presence of the HLA-C C2 allotype was associated with ankylosing spondylitis (p=0.0017, OR=1.92, CI=1.28-2.89), whereas a lack of KIR2DS5 and presence of C1 allotype was associated with rheumatoid arthritis (p=0.005, OR=1.47, CI=1.13-1.92). The presence of both KIR2DS5 and C1 seemed to protect from acute kidney graft rejection (p=0.017, OR=0.47, CI=0.25-0.89), whereas lack of KIR2DS5 and presence of C2 seemed to favor rejection (p=0.0015, OR=2.13, CI=1.34-3.37). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our results suggest that KIR2DS5 may protect from endometriosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and acute rejection of kidney graft.

Abstract

International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract

Thanks to the detector technology development based on high Z materials (GaAs, CdTe, CZT, etc.), the hybrid pixel detectors with direct photon-to-charge conversion become more and more popular, even in medical applications. Single photon counting systems aim at good position resolution, so making a pixel size smaller is a general tendency in such systems. However, for the detectors with pixel pitch of about 100 μm charge division effect becomes visible and it affects up to 20–30% of all interactions, depending on detector thickness and bias voltage. For the smaller pixel size this effect is even more pronounced. In this article we propose a new algorithm for charge sharing compensation—the Multithreshold Pattern Recognition algorithm. The algorithm was implemented in a readout circuit of pixel architecture with four energy thresholds, designed for operation with wide energy-range X-ray radiation. The simulation results and implementation details are presented in this paper.

Abstract

Hail cannoning is a technique of preventing cloud formation before hailstorms by creating a sequence of shock waves. So far, despite numerous experiments, there is no clear evidence that this technique actually works. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the hail cannoning technique and its impact on local weather conditions. Through mathematical modeling, numerical simulations, and systematic in-field experiments, we have proven that not only does it work, but it can also be successfully applied to solve the super-important, for many places all around the world, problem of smog. The main contributions of our study are as follows: we present a 3D mathematical model of propagation and the impact of the shock waves generated by the hail cannons on the local state of the atmosphere (1); we provide numerical experiments that prove that the technique interacts with and significantly impacts the local state of the atmosphere, and can be successfully applied to reduce the concentration of not only cloud vapor but also PM2.5 and PM10 particles, thus reducing smog (2); we also present systematic in-field experiments that confirm the findings of the mathematical modeling and numerical simulations (3), detailed scalability analysis of parallel implementation of the solver applied for numerical experiments (4). Abstract

Structured foam catalysts for N 2 O decomposition containing Co and Cs were prepared via conventional and organic-assisted impregnation method (acetic acid, citric acid, glycerol, glycine, urea). Organic-assisted impregnation caused higher abundance of smaller particles and different faceting. Glycerol usage leads to increase of specific rate constant for N 2 O decomposition, urea leads to its decrease. The optimal amount of Cs in Co 3 O 4 deposited on the foam was 2–3 times higher than in the bulk Co 3 O 4 -Cs due to the dispersion of part of the Cs species over the bare support. The use of glycerol caused a better surface coverage by spinel phase, thus leaving less space for spreading the cesium on the support instead of on the spinel phase. The positive effect of glycerol on the performance of the catalysts with optimized cesium content was attributed to refaceting of the spinal nanocrystals, and greater resistance of the (1 0 0) planes to gaseous NO/H 2 O contaminates.
