1. Variance in the radial distribution of nuclear matter between 56Ni and 58Ni inferred from a model-independent Sum-of-Gaussian analysis of elastic proton scattering data

Abstract

Differential cross sections for p-Ni56 and p-Ni58 elastic scattering, measured at low momentum transfer and at projectile energies of about 400 MeV/u with beams stored in the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt, have been analyzed up to |t|=0.06 (GeV/c)2 applying the model-independent Sum-of-Gaussians (SOG) method based on the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The rms point matter radius of the self-conjugate doubly magic radioactive Ni56 nucleus was deduced to be 3.62(6) fm, to be compared to the known radius of the stable Ni58 nucleus, 3.67(7) fm. Although the radii of both nuclei differ only slightly, and there is close agreement of the matter radii of Ni58 from former analyses using phenomenological parametrizations of the matter distribution, the SOG method was capable of elucidating pronounced differences in the shapes of the radial matter distributions between both nuclei. Consequences for the understanding of nuclear structure in the vicinity of the N=Z=28 magic shell are briefly discussed.

Abstract

The absolute differential cross section for small-angle proton elastic scattering on the proton-rich 8B nucleus has been measured in inverse kinematics for the first time. The experiment was performed using a secondary radioactive beam with an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI, Darmstadt. The active target, namely hydrogen-filled time projection ionization chamber IKAR, was used to measure the energy, angle and vertex point of the recoil protons. The scattering angle of the projectiles was simultaneously determined by the tracking detectors. The measured differential cross section is analyzed on the basis of the Glauber multiple scattering theory using phenomenological nuclear-density distributions with two free parameters. The radial density distribution deduced for 8B exhibits a halo structure with the root-mean-square (rms) matter radius Rm=2.58(6) fm and the rms halo radius Rh=4.24(25) fm. The results on 8B are compared to those on the mirror nucleus 8Li investigated earlier by the same method. Abstract

Proton-$^{133}$Cs elastic scattering at low momentum transfer is performed using an in-ring reaction technique at the Cooler Storage Ring at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. Recoil protons from the elastic collisions between the internal H$_2$-gas target and the circulating $^{133}$Cs ions at 199.4 MeV/u are detected by a silicon-strip detector. The matter radius of $^{133}$Cs is deduced by describing the measured differential cross sections using the Glauber model. Employing the adopted proton distribution radius, a point-neutron radius of 4.86(21) fm for $^{133}$Cs is obtained. With the newly determined neutron radius, the weak mixing angle sin$^2 \theta_W$ is independently extracted to be 0.227(28) by fitting the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data. Our work limits the sin$^2 \theta_W$ value in a range smaller than the ones proposed by the previous independent approaches, and would play an important role in searching new physics via the high precision CE$\nu$NS-CsI cross section data in the near future.

Abstract

A new technique developed for measuring nuclear reactions at low momentum transfer with stored beams in inverse kinematics was successfully used to study isoscalar giant resonances. The experiment was carried out at the experimental heavy-ion storage ring (ESR) at the GSI facility using a stored 58Ni beam at 100 MeV/u and an internal helium gas-jet target. In these measurements, inelastically scattered α-recoils at very forward center-of-mass angles (θcm≤1.5°) were detected with a dedicated setup, including ultra-high vacuum compatible detectors. Experimental results indicate a dominant contribution of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance at this very forward angular range. It was found that the monopole contribution exhausts 79−11+12% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which agrees with measurements performed in normal kinematics. This opens up the opportunity to investigate the giant resonances in a large domain of unstable and exotic nuclei in the near future. Abstract

Abstract

The very first in-ring reaction experiment at the HIRFL-CSR heavy-ion storage ring, namely proton elastic scattering on stable $^{58}$Ni nuclei, is presented. The circulating $^{58}$Ni$^{19+}$ ions with an energy of 95 MeV/u were interacting repeatedly with an internal hydrogen gas target in the CSRe experimental ring. Low energy proton recoils from the elastic collisions were measured with an ultra-high vacuum compatible silicon-strip detector. Deduced differential cross sections were normalized by measuring K-shell X-rays from $^{58}$Ni$^{19+}$ projectiles due to the $^{58}$Ni$^{19+}$-H$_2$ ionization collisions. Compared to the experimental cross sections, a good agreement has been achieved with the theoretical predictions in the measured region, which were obtained by using the global phenomenological optical model potentials. Our results enable new research opportunities for optical model potential studies on exotic nuclides by using the in-ring reaction setup at the HIRFL-CSR facility.

Absolute differential cross sections for elastic $p^7$Be and $p^8$B small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii $R_{\rm m} = 2.42 (4)$ fm for $^7$Be and $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm for $^8$B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. 10. The dominance of the $\nu(0d_{5/2})^2$ configuration in the $N=8$ shell in $^{12}$Be from the breakup reaction on a proton target at intermediate energy

Abstract

The momentum distribution of $^{11}$Be fragments produced by the breakup of $^{12}$Be interacting with a proton target at 700.5 MeV/$u$ energy has been measured at GSI Darmstadt. To obtain the structure information on the anomaly of the $N=8$ neutron shell, the momentum distribution of $^{11}$Be fragments from the one-neutron knockout $^{12}$Be(p,pn) reaction, measured in inverse kinematics, has been analysed in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) based on a quasi-free scattering scenario. The DWIA analysis shows a surprisingly strong contribution of the neutron $0d_{5/2}$ orbital in $^{12}$Be to the transverse momentum distribution of the $^{11}$Be fragments. The single-neutron $0d_{5/2}$ spectroscopic factor deduced from the present knock-out data is 1.39(10), which is significantly larger than that deduced recently from data of $^{12}$Be breakup on a carbon target. This result provides a strong experimental evidence for the dominance of the neutron $\nu(0d_{5/2})^2$ configuration in the ground state of $^{12}$Be., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

Quantum electrodynamics in very strong Coulomb fields is one scope which has not yet been tested experimentally with suffcient accuracy to really determine whether the perturbative approach is valid. One sensitive test is the determination of the 1s Lamb Shift in highly-charged very heavy ions. The 1s Lamb Shift of hydrogen-like lead (Pb81+) and gold (Au78+) has been determined using the novel detector concept of silicon microcalorimeters for the detection of hard X-rays. The results of (260 +- 22) eV for lead and (208 +- 13) eV for gold are within error bars in good agreement with theoretical predictions. For hydrogen-like lead, this represents the most accurate determination of the 1s Lamb Shift to our knowledge., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn because some technical details need to be clarified

Abstract

The Glauber model analysis of the elastic $^{6,8}$He+$p$ scattering data at energies around 700 MeV/nucleon, measured in two separate experiments at GSI-Darmstadt, has been done using several phenomenological parametrizations of the nuclear matter density. By taking into account the new data points measured at the high momentum transfer, the nuclear matter radii of $^{6,8}$He were accurately determined from the Glauber model analysis of the data, with the spin-orbital interaction explicitly taken into account. The well-known geometry for the core and dineutron halo has been used with the new parametrizations of the $^{6}$He density to extract the detailed information on the structure of $^{6}$He in terms of the core and dineutron halo radii. An enhanced sensitivity of the data measured at the high momentum transfer to the core part of the $^{6,8}$He densities has been found., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The method of pulse-shape analysis (PSA) for particle identification (PID) was applied to a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSD) with a strip pitch of 300 \{mu}m. We present the results of test measurements with particles from the reactions of a 70 MeV 12C beam impinging on a mylar target. 30. Patient-Specific Instrumentation vs Standard Referencing in Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Comparison of the Radiologic Outcome.

Abstract

Background: Existing literature on the superiority of patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) in total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) over standard referencing (SR) is limited. Advantages presented include better implant alignment, shorter operating times, and increased accuracy of implant size prediction. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze PSI in the hands of an experienced foot and ankle surgeon new to both PSI and SR for this specific implant, in regard to determining implant alignment, operative times, and radiologic short-term outcome and predicting implant size for tibial and talar components. Methods: Twenty-four patients undergoing TAA using PSI were compared to 25 patients using SR instrumentation. Outcome measures included alignment of the tibial component (α coronal plane, γ sagittal plane), the tibiotalar tilt (β), and the talar offset x on the sagittal view as well as the presence of radiolucent lines, operation time, and wound healing. Postoperative outcome was assessed at 6 weeks, 4 months, and 1 year postoperatively. Results: Implant positioning was similar in both groups, and no advantage in regard to the operative time could be seen when comparing TAA using PSI to SR. Implant size prediction was more reliable for the tibia than for the talus. Three patients (1 from the SR group and 2 from the PSI group) showed radiolucent lines around the tibial component. Two patients (both SR group) suffered delayed wound healing, albeit not requiring any additional measures. Conclusion: The PSI method did not show an advantage over SR in regard to positioning of the components or the duration of the surgery. The current study suggests that no initial advantage of PSI over SR are to be expected in standard total ankle replacement. Level of Evidence: Level III, retrospective study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent experiments, the new concept of calorimetric low-temperature detectors (CLTDs) was applied for the first time for the investigation of isotopic yields of fission fragments. Fragments from neutron-induced fission sources were mass-separated by the LOHENGRIN spectrometer at the ILL Grenoble and, after passing silicon nitride membranes used as degraders, detected in a CLTD array. The new detector concept of a thermal detector provides a fundamental advantage over conventional ionization-mediated detectors, in particular for heavier particle masses at low energies. Using fissile targets of235U,239Pu and241Pu, nuclear-charge separation was studied in the mass region 82 ≤ A ≤ 139. For light fragments, the Z resolution matches historically best values with conventional techniques, while for heavier masses substantial improvement was attained. We have gained first LOHENGRIN data on the isotopic yields in the light-mass group of241Pu. Towards mass-symmetry, known Z-yield data were supplemented in the range A = 110 to 113 for241Pu and239Pu. Extended data sets were cumulated for A = 92 and 96 due to a recent request from studies on the reactor anti-neutrino spectrum. Furthermore, considerable progress was achieved to extend isotopic yield measurements up to the heavy-mass region, hardly accessible until now.

Abstract

In the present work, the differential cross sections for small-angle proton elastic scattering on the 12,14 Be nuclei were measured in inverse kinematics, using secondary radioactive beams with energies near 700 MeV/u produced with the fragment separator FRS at GSI. The main part of the experimental setup was the active target IKAR, which was used simultaneously as a target and a detector for the recoil protons. Auxiliary detectors for projectile tracking and isotope identification completed the setup. The measured differential cross sections were analyzed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. For the evaluation of the data several phenomenological nuclear-matter density parametrizations and a sum of Gaussian parametrization were used. The nuclear-matter radii and radial density distributions of the isotopes 12,14 Be were deduced. Extended nuclear-matter density distributions were observed in both isotopes, and the halo structure of 14 Be was confirmed. The results were also compared with microscopic few-body and fermionic molecular dynamics model calculations concerning the structure of these neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

The presented work focuses on the development of a differential pumping system using double-sided silicon-strip detectors to separate the ultra-high vacuum of a storage ring from subsequent detectors and outgassing components placed in an auxiliary vacuum. Such a technical concept will give the opportunity to use telescope-like detector systems in an ultra-high vacuum environment, such as a storage ring, without enclosing the entire system in a pocket. Therefore, it will enable the detection of recoil particles with the smallest possible energy due to the use of the innermost strip detector as an active window. Our results prove that such an assembly is feasible without having an effect, within experimental errors, on the performance of the strip detector. Vacuum separation better than six orders of magnitude was achieved with the ultra-high vacuum side reaching down to the 10(-10) mbar pressure region. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

This contribution presents some results from the first feasibility measurement performed at GSI using a 350 MeV/nucleon 136 Xe beam and a Hydrogen gas-jet target. In this feasibility study, one element of every possible detection part of the future EXL detection system was investigated. In addition, simulation results for EXL setup will be presented.
