1. THE SOCIODEMOGRAPHICS INFLUENCE IN THE KNOWLEDGE, PERCEPTION, AND BEHAVIOR OF OSTEOPOROSIS IN MALANG: A COMMUNITY-BASED STUDY

Abstract

Background: Osteoporosis is a major global health issue that results in disability and high medical expenses. It can significantly impact both individuals and their caregivers, leading to pain, limitations in daily activities, and emotional distress. Purpose: This study observed the association of sociodemographic factors in affecting knowledge, perception, and behavior related to osteoporosis in a rural area of Malang, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural area of Malang to assess the knowledge, perception, and behavior of adults (≥18 years old) toward osteoporosis. Participants were asked to fill in a validated questionnaire, which was selected randomly using a multistage stratified sampling technique. Collected data were analyzed on SPSS for Windows version 25.0. Results: The study included 376 randomly selected participants from various rural areas in Malang. The subjects mostly were within the 51-60 age group (34.0%), with female respondents accounting for 73.4% of the sample. On average, participants scored 1.8 (±2.5) for knowledge, 12.0 (±2.1) for perception, and 12.2 (±2.9) for behavior regarding osteoporosis. Both age and education levels showed associations with knowledge and perception, while only age was significantly linked to behavior concerning osteoporosis. Conclusions: Our study revealed a strong association between low educational levels, especially among the elderly, and the lack of knowledge, perceptions, and behavior toward osteoporosis.

Abstract

Los bosques del departamento de San Martin, hábitat de Platycerium andinum B. viene siendo destruido de manera desmesurada, ocasionado por actividades antropogénicas, lo que ha conducido a la pérdida de la especie en su habitad natural, sumándose a ello la extracción por su exuberante belleza para su comercialización como planta ornamental, asimismo sus esporas son difíciles de germinar en condiciones naturales, además, no se cuenta con una metodología para la propagación in vitro de esta especie. La presente investigación tiene como objetivo determinar la concentración adecuada de hipoclorito de sodio para la obtención de esporas de P. andinum libre de patógenos y evaluar tres medios de cultivo para determinar el medio más adecuado para la propagación de gametofitos. Las esporas fueron obtenidas de frondas fértiles de plantas adultas haciendo un raspado de estas. La germinación de las esporas fue evaluada a partir de los 10 días, tiempo en el cual comenzaron a germinar y a los 30 días ya se tenía abundante tejido gametofitico; se evaluó a través del Índice de Germinación de las esporas (IG) utilizando la escala de abundancia-cobertura de Braun-Blanquet llegando a los 60 días a la escala 5 (cualquier número de gametofitos con cobertura mayor de 75%). En cuanto a la determinación del mejor medio de cultivo para la propagación in vitro de gametofitos se trabajó con tres medios MSB (T1, T2 y T3) con aditivos de 0.4 ml. de thiamina, 0.5 de ácido nicotínico, 2 gramos de carbón activado y 20 gramos de sacarosa; con 100 ml de agua de coco en T2, y 200 ml en T3, obteniéndose como mejor resultado al tratamiento T1: (M y S Basal, con adición de 0.4 ml. de thiamina, 0.5 de ácido nicotínico, 2 gramos de carbón activado y 20 gramos de sacarosa).

Abstract

In a speech recognition and classification system, the step of determining the suitable and reliable classifier is essential in order to obtain optimal classification result. This paper presents Indonesian syllables sound classification by a C4.5 decision tree, a Naive Bayes classifier, a Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) algorithm, a Random Forest decision tree, and a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) for classifying twelve classes of syllables. This research applies five different features set, those are combination features of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with statistical denoted as WS, the Renyi Entropy (RE) features, the combination of Autoregressive Power Spectral Density (AR-PSD) and Statistical denoted as PSDS, the combination of PSDS and the selected features of RE by using Correlation-Based Feature Selection (CFS) denoted as RPSDS, and the combination of DWT, RE, and AR-PSD denoted as WRPSDS. The results show that the classifier of MLP has the highest performance when it is combined with WRPSDS.

4. Syllables sound signal classification using multi-layer perceptron in varying number of hidden-layer and hidden-neuron

Abstract

The research on signal processing of syllables sound signal is still the challenging tasks, due to non-stationary, speaker-dependent, variable context, and dynamic nature factor of the signal. In the process of classification using multi-layer perceptron (MLP), the process of selecting a suitable parameter of hidden neuron and hidden layer is crucial for the optimal result of classification. This paper presents a speech signal classification method by using MLP with various numbers of hidden-layer and hidden-neuron for classifying the Indonesian Consonant-Vowel (CV) syllables signal. Five feature sets were generated by using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Renyi Entropy, Autoregressive Power Spectral Density (AR-PSD) and Statistical methods. Each syllable was segmented at a certain length to form a CV unit. The results show that the average recognition of WRPSDS with 1, 2, and 3 hidden layers were 74.17%, 69.17%, and 63.03%, respectively.

5. Seroprevalence of antibodies to chlamydophila abortus shown in awassi sheep and local goats in jordan

Abstract

A cold complement fixation test (CFT) was used to identify C. abortus infection in ewes and does in northern Jordan. Sera from 36 flocks of sheep and 20 flocks of goats were collected randomly. The results showed that 433 (21.8%) out of 1 984 ovine sera, and 82 (11.4%) out of 721 caprine sera, were seropositive for C. abortus infection, as indicated by a titre ≥ 1:40. However, all the tested sheep flocks and goat flocks (100%) revealed at least one seropositive animal. There was a strong association (P < 0.05) between the rate of C. abortus infection and the size of the sheep flock, when larger flocks had higher infection rates. However, in goats, the flock size had no relationship with seropositivity. Age had no significant (P > 0.05) impact on C. abortus seropositivity. In sheep, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between the rates of the chlamydial infection in the four studied areas of northern Jordan. The highest infection rate in sheep (31.2%) was recorded in Mafraq area, while the rates in Irbid, Ajloun and Jerash were 18.5%, 11.2% and 13.9%, respectively. In goats, there was no significant difference between the rates of the chlamydial infection in the two areas studied. The rates of goat infections were 10.8% and 11.8% in Ajloun and Jerash areas, respectively.

13. Arthroscopic assisted percutaneous fixation in ankle pilon fracture: A case report.

Abstract

Results of operative fixation for ankle fractures had been suboptimal, with cases of posttraumatic osteoarthritis occurring following the surgeries. Intra-articular injuries have been suggested as the cause of this problem. This case report aims to present an ankle pilon fracture Ruedi Allgower type II case treated with percutaneous fixation and arthroscopy evaluation. Female, 17 years old, complained of pain and swelling at the right ankle. The physical examination revealed swelling, deformity, tenderness, and limited range of motion at the right ankle. The radiological examination showed a Ruedi Allgower type II pilon fracture with right ankle dislocation. The patient underwent closed reduction, arthroscopy to evaluate her right ankle and percutaneous internal fixation. The post-surgery evaluation showed a stable ankle. Patients undergoing ankle fracture surgery may benefit from ankle arthroscopy because it may increase visualization of articular reductions, assess and repair cartilage and ligament damage, remove loose bodies, decrease soft tissue exposure, preservative vascularity, and evaluate syndesmosis. Moreover, rapid arthroscopic evaluation has a low complication rate. The ability of arthroscopy to improve syndesmotic instability diagnosis suggests that arthroscopy may play a significant role in managing ankle fractures. Arthroscopy-assisted internal fixation provides more benefits and information as a single case report, and more studies are warranted; regarding patients' intra-articular injuries, preventing future complications, such as posttraumatic osteoarthritis. • When treating ankle fractures, arthroscopy-assisted internal fixation may be the way to go due to its advantages. • Arthroscopy-assisted internal fixation finds and cures pathology that would otherwise cause chronic problems. • Arthroscopy-assisted internal fixation has a smaller complication risk and more insight into a patient's injury severity. 14. The effectiveness ORIF for neglected periprosthetic femoral fractures after hemiarthroplasty: A case report.

Abstract

Periprosthetic fractures are a growing concern due to the increasing frequency of primary joint replacement surgery, with total hip arthroplasty being the most common. The incidence of periprosthetic fractures after revision surgery ranges from 4 to 11 %, with up to 30 % reported after knee revision surgery. This case report aims to describe the treatment of an 81-year-old woman suffering from neglected periprosthetic femoral fracture post hemiarthroplasty. An 81-year-old woman with a history of hemiarthroplasty surgery and hypertension was admitted to the ER with pain in her right thigh. She had a middle shaft femoral fracture and was scheduled for open reduction and internal fixation. Despite being fully conscious and having an average pulse rate and blood pressure, she had cardiomegaly and congestive pulmonum. Unfortunately, this patient did not receive appropriate medical treatment after it occurred for 1 month. After surgery, we evaluated the implant, and the implant stabilized the fracture. After 1–3 months after surgery, the LEFS (The Lower Extremity Functional Scale) score was found that the score increase significantly after surgery. The Vancouver classification system manages periprosthetic fractures by assessing location, stability, and bone quality. Type A fractures involve the trochanter, while type B fractures are diaphyseal and can extend distally. ORIF is used for subtype B1 fractures, but newer techniques offer shorter operating times and fewer complications. From this study, we can conclude that even though neglected cases procedure with ORIF promises a good outcome based on clinical evaluation. • Treating neglected cases procedure with ORIF promises a good outcome based on clinical evaluation. • Before choosing ORIF as a treatment, it is imperative to categorize the fracture type using the Vancouver classification. • ORIF has been proven to have shorter operating and anesthetic time, fewer blood transfusions, and fewer complications. 15. Successful management of severe manifestation bone cemented implantation syndrome during hemiarthroplasty surgery in patient with multiple comorbidities: A case report.

Abstract

• Early and aggressive resuscitation is the cornerstone of treating BCIS. • Fluid resuscitation to maintain preload and inotropes to support ventricular contractility are recommended. • Patients with comorbidities and risk factors should be monitored closely during and after bone cementation. • A good response time and high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) also takes a major role in treating BCIS. • Good coordination among the operation team is needed escpecially for an arthroplasty surgery. Bone Cement Implantation Syndrome (BCIS) is a lethal condition with complex physiological changes after the insertion of Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) cement during intraoperative arthroplasty. Despite the etiology and the pathophysiology of BCIS has not been fully understood, several mechanisms have been discovered. Some clinical manifestations of BCIS are hypotension, hypoxemia, a decrease of consciousness, arrhythmia, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiac arrest. A 67 years old woman underwent cemented hemiarthroplasty operation due to intertrochanteric fracture in her right femur. The hemodynamic was stable before and during operation, but suddenly the patient went into cardiac arrest as the cement inserted. Immediate resuscitation was performed successfully and stable hemodynamic was achieved. Several risk factors including underlying cardiovascular disease, advanced age, osteoporosis (enlarged porous cavities increase the risk of emboli generation), fracture type, metastatic bone disease, femoral canal diameter of more than 21 mm, previously non-instrumented femoral canal, and patent foramen ovale (paradoxical embolus). Some studies have shown usage of H1 and H2 antagonists, methylprednisolone, inotropes, vasopressor, and some alterations in surgical technique, can prevent the progression of the BCIS. Communication between the orthopaedic surgeon and anesthesiologist and high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) will become a good basis in treating BCIS. Preoperative optimization by increasing oxygen inspiration concentration, usage of inotropes and vasopressor, and avoiding intravascular volume depletion during operation is essential in cemented arthroplasty procedure. Both orthopaedic surgeon and anesthesiologist should recognize the clinical presentation of BCIS and well-prepared for the management of BCIS including any supportive measures. Abstract

The Region Languedoc-Roussillon is the umbrella organisation for an interconnected and integrated project on AHA covering the 3 pillars of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. All sub-activities (A1: electronic pharmaceutical file, A2: falls prevention initiative, A3: frailty, B3: chronic respiratory diseases, chronic diseases with comorbidities, oral health and hepatitis virus C chronic infection, C2 and D4 active and independent living and handicap) are included in MACVIA-LR that has a strong political commitment and includes all stakeholders (public, private, patients, policy makers). It is one of the Reference Sites of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing built around chronic diseases, ageing and handicap. The framework of MACVIA-LR has the vision that the prevention and management of CDs is essential for AHA promotion and for the reduction of handicap. The main objective of MACVIA-LR is to develop innovative solutions for a network of Living Labs in order to improve the care of patients affected by CDs in the Languedoc-Roussillon area and to disseminate the innovation.

Abstract

International audience; Falls represent a major cause of burden and death in older adults. The MACVIA-LR (fighting chronic diseases for active and healthy ageing in Languedoc-Roussillon) falls initiative is a cross-cutting Living Lab based on the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) at the regional level. It covers all action plans (A1, A2, A3, B3, C2 and D4) of the EIP on AHA. The Living Lab will: (i) raise awareness, (ii) drive attitude change with respect to falls and falls prevention and (iii) improve access to information on falls prevention. It aims to reduce fall-related hospitalisations by 30% in 2020 in the région Languedoc-Roussillon (LR). It includes: (i) a falls prevention clinic for the assessment of subjects (with a falls risk) in the two teaching hospitals of Montpellier and Nîmes, (ii) the Regional Ageing Institute (CARSAT-LR), (iii) the Low Vision Institute of Nîmes, (iv) the Lattes Social Welfare Centre, (v) the home automation Institut méditerranéen des métiers de longévité, (vi) teaching, training and coaching as well as (vii) industrial partnership. Two care pathways have been developed (stroke and falls) and are being applied to remote rural areas of the région. The MACVIA-falls prevention initiative is an output of the EIP on AHA.

Abstract

The Région Languedoc-Roussillon is the umbrella organisation for an interconnected and integrated project on AHA covering the 3 pillars of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. All sub-activities (A1: electronic pharmaceutical file, A2: falls prevention initiative, A3: frailty, B3: chronic respiratory diseases, chronic diseases with comorbidities, oral health and hepatitis virus C chronic infection, C2 and D4 active and independent living and handicap) are included in MACVIA-LR that has a strong political commitment and includes all stakeholders (public, private, patients, policy makers). It is one of the Reference Sites of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing built around chronic diseases, ageing and handicap. The framework of MACVIA-LR has the vision that the prevention and management of CDs is essential for AHA promotion and for the reduction of handicap. The main objective of MACVIA-LR is to develop innovative solutions for a network of Living Labs in order to improve the care of patients affected by CDs in the Languedoc-Roussillon area and to disseminate the innovation. Abstract

The hamstring is the most popular autograft used for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Despite its excellent outcome, donor site morbidity is also irritating. Patellofemoral problems are reported to be one of the side effects after hamstring autograft harvesting, suggested to be due to both gracilis & semitendinosus sacrificing. Some experts propose retaining gracilis to decrease patellofemoral problems. The all-inside technique is an advantageous ACLR technique that can preserve the gracilis muscle while reducing muscle strength loss of affected limbs and the risk of knee joint instability under rotational load. This study aims to compare the patellofemoral functional outcome of both gracilis sparing and sacrificing using a validated Kujala score three months after ACLR.

25. Plating technique outcome evaluation in calcaneal fracture based on American orthopaedics foot and ankle score and Böhler-Gissane angle: A case series.

Abstract

Intraarticular Calcaneal fracture treatment nowadays is still up for debate. Surgical plating treatment is favorable because of the rapid healing process and better anatomical reduction despite the invasive intervention. Hence, clinical evaluation is needed to assess the quality-of-life index from foot and ankle by the American orthopaedics Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score postoperatively. Then, the outcome evaluation of reduction in calcaneal plating of intraarticular calcaneal fracture with Böhler angle and Gissane angle to see if the calcaneal plating technique is a recommended treatment for the calcaneal fracture. We treated six patients from December 2020–July 2021 with a calcaneal fracture that underwent surgical plating, mainly by one surgeon. A calcaneal fracture is classified according to sanders classification. In this study, four patients are above the age of 40, and two are under 25. Pre-operative Böhler angle ranged from 8 to 65°, and Gissane angle ranged from 134 to 158°. Surgical plating was performed on all six patients. From clinical evaluation using the AOFAS score, we got satisfactory results on all patients who underwent calcaneal plating surgery. Three patients achieved excellent range outcomes with 95% and 99% of AOFAS Scores, and three patients reported AOFAS score good range outcomes with the lowest score of 88%. From the radiological outcome, most of the patient's Böhler and Gissane angles achieved normal value after surgical plating. The calcaneal plating technique gives better anatomical reduction depending on Bohler and Gissane angle. These results promise that anatomical reduction can improve clinical outcomes based on the AOFAS score. 30. Effect of Flue Gas Desulfurization Residue on Plant Establishment and Soil and Leachate Quality.

Abstract

Effects on soil quality and crop establishment after incorporation of flue gas desulfurization by‐product (FGD) into soil as an amendment was assessed in a mesocosm study. Mesocosm units received applications equivalent to 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10% FGD residue [0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 tons acre−1]. Germination, biomass production, and elemental composition of corn (Zea mays L. var. Dekalb DK‐683), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. var. Haskell Pupa 94], radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. Sparkler), and cotton (Gossypius hirsutus L. var. Deltapine 51) were determined. The quality of leachates and soil were also determined periodically. Flue gas desulfurization residue did not affect germination and all application rates stimulated aboveground biomass. Plants grown in FGD‐amended soil contained significantly elevated tissue concentrations of As, B, Se, and Mo. The FGD residue elevated surface soil pH from 5.5 (Control) to 8.1 (at 10% FGD). Leachate pH was unaffected by FGD, but salinity rose sharply with increasing application rates of FGD. Leachates contained higher concentrations of B, with small increases in Se and As. Flue gas desulfurization residue application caused an increase in total B, As, Mo, Se, and extractable Ca in the soil, but decreased Mn and Zn. Using FGD residues could have beneficial effects on crop establishment without detrimental effects on soil or leachate quality, at an optimum rate of approximately 2.5%. Abstract

A field study (1993–96) assessed the benefits of applying unusually high rates of coal fly ash as a soil amendment to enhance water retention of soils without adversely affecting growth and marketability of the turf species, centipedegrass [Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack.]. A Latin Square plot design was employed that included 0 (control, no ash applied), 280, 560, and 1120 Mg ha−1 application rates of unweathered precipitator fly ash. The fly ash was spread evenly over each plot area, rototilled, and allowed to weather under natural conditions for 8 mo before seeding. High levels of soluble salts, indicated by the electrical conductivity (EC) of soil extracts, in tandem with an apparent phytotoxic effect from boron (B), apparently inhibited initial plant establishment as shown by substantially lower germination counts in treated soil. However, plant height and rooting depth were not adversely affected, as were the dry matter (DM) yields throughout the study period. Ash treatment did not significantly influence water infiltration rate, bulk density, or temperature of the soil, but substantially improved water‐holding capacity (WHC) and plant‐available water (PAW). 33. Arsenic in field-collected soil solutions and extracts of contaminated soils and its implication to soil standards

Abstract

Large concentrations of arsenic in soils, sediments, and freshwaters require risk assessment across the Central Alps and other regions. We measured arsenic concentrations in soil samples collected from 38 sites located in the Austrian Central Alps that had been contaminated due to mining and smelter activities and geogenic mineralization. Medians and ranges of arsenic concentrations (in mg kg—1) in the soil solid phase were: 77.1 (1—3000) for the total (Ast), 19.2 (0—726) for (NH4)2C2O4-extractable (Aso), 2.35 (0—169) for (NH4)2HPO4-extractable (Asp), and 0.143 (0—11.1) for (NH4)2SO4-extractable (Ass) arsenic. Arsenic concentrations in soil solutions (Assol) collected from organic surface layers and mineral horizons at five selected sites using suction cups fitted with nylon membranes ranged from 0 to 171 μg l—1. Typically, the prevailing species of As in the soil solution was As(V). Assol was correlated with Ass (Assol = 0.279 + 15.6 Ass; r2 = 0.938; n = 17) and Ast (Assol = 1.272 + 0.043 Ast; r2 = 0.833; n = 17). Using these empirical models, Assol can be predicted quite accurately based on extraction with 0.05 M (NH4)2SO4 or total arsenic concentrations in the soil. Linking these models to drinking water standards (DWS) we propose soil standards for freshwater protection that vary for Ass (mg kg—1) between 0.62 (for DWS = 10 μg l—1 WHO) and 3.19 (for DWS = 50 μg l—1). Corresponding standards for Ast (mg kg—1) are 203 (DWS = 10 μg l—1) and 1133 (DWS = 50 μg l—1). These considerations demonstrate that changes in legislation on DWS may have dramatic impact on As concentrations in soil that are acceptable for groundwater protection.

35. Zinc uptake by plants on amended polluted soils

Abstract

AbstractThis study evaluated the efficacy of various soil amendments in reducing Zn availability in an ultisol Appling silt loam. Zinc was added to the soil at two rates (1000 and 2000 mg kg−1) as a defined mixture of various Zn sources (40% of ZnSO4, 25% of ZnCO3, 20% of ZnO, and 15% of ZnCl2). After soil equilibration, one of five amendments was added: lime, apatite, natural zeolite (phillipsite), Fe-richTM, and N-viro (an alkaline stabilized sewage sludge). Lime was added to adjust soil pH to a value of 6.5 and the zeolite, apatite, Fe-richTM, and N-viro were added at a rate of 25 g kg−1. Early plant mortality resulted from Zn-treated soils receiving no amendment. In contrast, each of the soil amendments reduced Zn uptake by plants. Based on plant yield, Zn tissue concentrations, and extractability of Zn in treated soils, Fe-richTM, apatite, and N-viro appear to be more effective in reducing Zn availability than either lime or zeolite.

36. Mineralogical and Physicochemical Differences between Mobile and Nonmobile Colloidal Phases in Reconstructed Pedons

Abstract

Ultisols can be highly dispersive and therefore a potential source for mobile colloids to underlying aquifers. In this study, mobile colloids were collected after a rain from 13.5‐m3lysimeters containing reconstructed pedons of two Ultisols. The mobile colloids were enriched with kaolinite, Fe oxides, and gibbsite and were more dilute in quartz and hydroxy‐interlayered vermiculite (HIV) relative to the total clay fractions of the originating pedons. The colloids were <1000 nm in diameter and had a bimodal size distribution: the larger colloids (≈760 nm) consisted primarily of quartz and HIV; the much more abundant smaller colloids (≈230 nm) consisted primarily of Fe oxides, kaolinite, and gibbsite. The colloids also had exceptionally high negative surface charges that probably originated from organic coatings (10 g kg−1). These organic coatings indicate that the majority of the colloids originated from the surface horizon, the only horizons with measurable amounts of organic C. Soil minerals most likely to enter the mobile phase (Fe oxides, gibbsite, and kaolinite) were readily dispersible and in the <200‐nm fraction. The HIV in the reconstructed pedons was readily dispersible but because of its relatively large size (>200 nm), it was removed from the mobile phase during transport, presumably via a straining mechanism. Quartz was neither readily dispersible nor abundant in the <200‐nm fraction and, therefore, was not prevalent in the mobile phase. The ability of Ultisols to release colloids that can readily move through a pedon may make these soils and the underlying aquifers especially susceptible to colloid‐facilitated transport of contaminants.

37. Chemical Conditions Conducive to the Release of Mobile Colloids from Ultisol Profiles

Abstract

Dispersed colloidal clay particles may enhance the transport of environmental contaminants adsorbed to the colloid surfaces. The objective of this study was to determine how soil pH (4.3–6.9), low total electrolyte concentration (TEC, 0.4–2.8 molcm‐3), and low Na adsorption ratios (SAR, 0.3–1.8 [molcm‐3]0.5) affected the concentration of mobile colloids released from 13.5‐m3reconstructed Ultisol profiles. Critical flocculation concentration (CFC, the minimum TEC to induce flocculation of a clay suspension) tests were conducted using the water‐dispersible clay fraction of the Ap horizon of these profiles, which is the primary source for the mobile colloids. Surface soil pH, TEC, and SAR levels of the profiles that released high concentrations of colloids fell within the dispersion domain identified by the laboratory CFC tests. The effect of SAR on dispersion appears to be a continuum that approaches zero, and this effect is significantly (P≤ 0.01) dependent on TEC. The dispersible nature of these soils is in part attributed to their very low TEC, generally <2 molcm‐3, which results from low concentrations of weatherable minerals. The TEC of 10 of the 13 profiles were <2 molcm‐3, the CFC for SAR = 1 (molcm‐3)0.5, indicating that if the pH is not limiting (pH greater than ≈6.0), colloidal dispersion will occur. Thus, these weathered soils can be highly dispersive within limited chemical conditions, and only small increases in SAR or pH may induce dispersion. By identifying these limits, the risk of enhancing subsurface contaminant transport by soil‐derived mobile colloids can be reduced.

38. Environmental Impacts of Coal Combustion Residues

Abstract

Coal combustion residues account for 90% of all fossil fuel combustion wastes produced in the USA. It is projected that by the year 2000 more than 150 million t of these materials will be produced in the USA each year. Presently, only about 20% of these wastes are utilized, with the remainder deposited in landfills or surface impoundments. This article reviews the information available concerning the environmental impacts associated with the disposal or utilization of coal combustion residues. The majority of the information available in the literature concerns the impacts of fly and bottom ashes; other coal combustion wastes have not received much attention. The major potential impacts of ash disposal on terrestrial ecosystems include: leaching of potentially toxic substances into soils and groundwater; reductions in plant establishment and growth due primarily to adverse chemical characteristics of the ash; changes in the elemental composition of vegetation growing on the ash; and increased mobility and accumulation of potentially toxic elements throughout the food chain. Ash disposal in landfills and settling ponds can influence adjacent aquatic ecosystems directly, through inputs of ash basin effluent and surface runoff, and indirectly, through seepage and groundwater contamination. Major impacts are generally associated with changes in water chemistry, including changes in pH and concentrations of potentially toxic elements. Using ash as a soil amendment can improve soil texture and water‐holding capacity, increase soil pH, and enhance soil fertility. However, it may also result in excessive soluble salt concentrations, excess B, and increased concentrations of other potentially toxic trace elements; reduction in the concentrations and/or availability of soil N and P; elemental imbalances due to excessively high pH; and cementation or compaction of soil. Scrubber sludge and fluidized bed combustion waste may be used as soil amendments as well, but also may create problems due to high alkalinity and high salinity.

39. Environmental Impacts of Metal Ore Mining and Processing: A Review

Abstract

The impact of mining and smelting of metal ores on environmental quality is described. Mines produce large amounts of waste because the ore is only a small fraction of the total volume of the mined material. In the metal industry, production of Cu, Pb, and Zn causes the greatest degradation of the environment. Copper mining produces extensive mine wastes and tailings and Cu smelting emits approximately 0.11 Mg of S per Mg of Cu produced in the USA. Zinc and Pb smelters release large quantities of Cd and Pb into the environment. Metal smelting and refining produce gaseous(CO2, SO2, NOx, etc.) and particulate matteremissions, sewage waters, and solid wastes. Soil contamination with trace metals is considered a serious problem related to smelting; however, mining and smelting are not main sources of global metal input into soils. Other sources like discarded manufactured products, coal ash, agriculture, and transportation take a lead. Smelters are the main sources of atmospheric emissions of As, Cu, Cd, Sb, and Zn on a global scale and they contribute substantially to the overall emissions of Cr, Pb, Se, and Ni. A quantitative evaluation of the environmental health effects of mining and smelting is difficult because of the complexity of factors involved and lack of consistent methodology. Nevertheless, the case studies described indicate that negative health effects could arise from Pb mining and smelting. Risk assessment revealed that food chain contamination by Cd from soils contaminated by smelting is very unlikely under the western diet.

Abstract

Summary A group of 20 healthy volunteers underwent a 35% carbon dioxide / 65% oxygen air-placebo controlled challenge test twice, premedicated 1 h before with either 20 mg yohimbine or placebo, following a double-blind randomized crossover design. Contrary to expectation the anxiety response to carbon dioxide was not higher when premedicated with yohimbine compared to premedication with placebo. Possible implications of this finding are discussed, with reference to general chemical models of panic.

41. Effects of Soil‐Applied Selenium on the Growth and Selenium Content of a Forage Species

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of soil‐applied selenate and selenite on the growth and Se content of a forage species, sorgrass (Sorghum vulgarevar. sudanenseHitchc.), grown on acid southeastern soils under different soil conditions. A greenhouse pot study was conducted using a factorial design, with two soil types varying in clay and hydrous oxide content (Blanton sand, a loamy, siliceous, thermic Grossarenic Paleudult; and Orangeburg loamy sand, a loamy, siliceous, thermic Typic Paleudult), two soil treatments (limed and unlimed), two Se forms (selenate, SeO2−4, and selenite, SeO2−3), and four Se concentrations (0, 1, 2, and 4 mg Se kg−1soil). Additions of Se in the selenate form had a greater toxic effect on the plants, reducing plant biomass as much as 97% and increasing plant Se concentrations to as high as 1153 mg Se kg−1. Selenite additions generally did not affect plant biomass, but still resulted in accumulations of Se in aboveground tissues to levels potentially toxic to animals. Selenium concentrations were higher in plants grown on the soil lower in clay and hydrons oxide content. Liming resulted in lower tissue Se concentrations in plants grown on either soil treated with selenate.

42. Growth and Elemental Content of Two Tree Species Growing on Abandoned Coal Fly Ash Basins

Abstract

Differences in aboveground tissue concentrations of trace elements were assessed for sweetgum (Liquidambar styracifluaL.) and sycamore (Platanus occidentalisL.) growing on two abandoned coal fly ash basins and a control soil (Fuquay sand; loamy, siliceous, thermic Arenic Plinthic Kandiudult; pH = 4.99). The “wet basin” (pH = 5.58) had originally received precipitator ash in an ash‐water slurry, while the “dry basin” (pH = 8.26) had received both precipitator and bottom ash in dry form. In general, trees from the wet basin exhibited elevated trace element concentrations in comparison to the controls, while the dry basin trees exhibited reduced concentrations. One of the most striking differences in elemental concentrations among the ash basin and control trees was observed for Mn, with the control trees exhibiting concentrations orders of magnitude greater than the ash basin trees. Differences in foliar trace element concentrations among the sites can generally be explained by differences in substrate trace element concentrations and/or substrate pH. While trees from the wet ash basin generally had the highest trace element concentrations, these trees also attained the greatest height and diameter growth, suggesting that the elevated trace element concentrations in the wet basin substrate are not limiting the establishment of these two species. The greater height and diameter growth of the wet basin trees is presumably a result of the greater water‐holding capacity of the substrate on this site. Differences in growth and tissue concentrations between sweetgum and sycamore highlight the importance of using more than one species when assessing metal toxicity or deficiency on a given substrate.

43. Surface‐Facilitated Chemical Degradation of Tetraphenylboron in Soil

Abstract

Laboratory studies were conducted to examine the surface‐promoted degradation of tetraphenylboron (TPB) in soil. The results indicated that TPB degrades rapidly in soil and that the processes involved are predominately abiotic reactions. The initial products of degradation of TPB are diphenylborinic acid (DPBA) and biphenyl. A portion of the DPBA produced subsequently degrades to produce boric acid. However, only about 20% of the total B added initially to the soil as TPB was accounted for by the measured species at the end of the experiment. Most of the remaining B appears to be present in moderately stable organic compounds. Comparison of the degradation rates in different soils indicated that the rates in the surface soil were somewhat higher than in the subsoil. The only measured characteristic of these soils that follows a corresponding trend is soil organic matter content. Additional experiments indicated that rates of the initial reaction are inversely related to soil moisture content. Observed reaction products indicate that the initial step in the degradation process is a two‐step oxidation at Lewis acid sites associated with soil component surfaces.
