Abstract

Machine-learning classifiers can be leveraged as a two-sample statistical test. Suppose each sample is assigned a different label and that a classifier can obtain a better-than-chance result discriminating them. In this case, we can infer that both samples originate from different populations. However, many types of models, such as neural networks, behave as a black-box for the user: they can reject that both samples originate from the same population, but they do not offer insight into how both samples differ. Self-Organizing Maps are a dimensionality reduction initially devised as a data visualization tool that displays emergent properties, being also useful for classification tasks. Abstract

Given two relations containing multiple measurements - possibly with uncertainties - our objective is to find which sets of attributes from the first have a corresponding set on the second, using exclusively a sample of the data. This approach could be used even when the associated metadata is damaged, missing or incomplete, or when the volume is too big for exact methods. This problem is similar to the search of Inclusion Dependencies (IND), a type of rule over two relations asserting that for a set of attributes X from the first, every combination of values appears on a set Y from the second. Existing IND can be found exploiting the existence of a partial order relation called specialization. However, this relation is based on set theory, requiring the values to be directly comparable. Statistical tests are an intuitive possible replacement, but it has not been studied how would they affect the underlying assumptions. In this paper we formally review the effect that a statistical approach has over the inference rules applied to IND discovery. Our results confirm the intuitive thought that statistical tests can be used, but not in a directly equivalent manner. We provide a workable alternative based on a "hierarchy of null hypotheses", allowing for the automatic discovery of multi-dimensional equally distributed sets of attributes., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

7. 'Let's Date!' A 360-Degree Video Application to Support Foreign Language Learning

Abstract

New technologies are changing the way of learning foreign languages. However, one of the main challenges for software developers and mobile assisted language learning designers remains the creation of learning environments for students' language immersion in and outside the classroom. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a VR-based mobile app called "Let's date!." The app enables Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) A1 level German language learners to interact with an immersive environment and to practise several language skills. The results have proven that the use of 360° videos based on realistic situations and combined with a conversational agent is suitable to reinforce students' foreign language competencies. Abstract

Given the peculiar and (in spite of many efforts) unexplained quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) twin peak phenomena in accretion disc PSD observations, the present exploratory analytical article tries to inquire deeper into the relationship between discoseismic modes and the underlying driving turbulence in order to assess its importance. We employ a toy model in the form of a Gaussian white noise driven damped harmonic oscillator with stochastic frequency. This oscillator represents the discoseismic mode. (Stochastic damping was also considered, but interestingly found to be less relevant for the case at hand.) In the context of this model, we find that turbulence interacts with disc oscillations in interesting ways. In particular, the stochastic part in the oscillator frequency behaves as a separate driving agent. This gives rise to 3:2 twin peaks for some values of the physical parameters, which we find. We conclude with the suggestion that the study of turbulence be brought to the forefront of disc oscillation dynamics, as opposed to being a mere background feature. This change of perspective carries immediate observable consequences, such as considerably shifting the values of the (discoseismic) oscillator frequencies., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

10. Visual Environment for Designing Interactive Learning Scenarios with Augmented Reality

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) technology allows the inclusion of virtual elements on a vision of actual physical environment for the creation of a mixed reality in real time. This kind of technology can be used in educational settings. However, the current AR authoring tools present several drawbacks, such as, the lack of a mechanism for tracking the students' activities, the capability of detecting collisions among virtual objects, allowing establish only one-to-one relationships between trackers and virtual objects, etc. In this paper, we present VEDILS, a visual tool based on the MIT App Inventor 2 environment for designing interactive learning scenarios that include Augmented Reality (AR) resources and can be deployed on Android devices. We have extended the App Inventor block language to include AR resources and obtain information about users' interaction with such resources. Furthermore, a use scenario consisting in the development of an example of learning scenario for Engineering students is included. With this prototype students can visualize 3D models of the mechanical parts with augmented reality in a mobile device, providing a better perception of the model 3D shape and improving the ability of making the 2D orthographic views and perspectives that they study in the first year of mechanical engineer. 12. Mobile Apps to Support and Assess Foreign Language Learning

Abstract

In the last two decades there have been many attempts to integrate all kinds of mobile devices and apps to support formal as well as informal learning processes. However, most of the available apps still support mainly individual learning, using mobile devices to deliver content rather than providing learners with the opportunity to interact with each other. To address this we have designed an app based on a highly interactive, ubiquitous and constructive learning approach. The app is called "Guess it! Language Trainer" and allows learners to share, assess and co-construct their foreign language knowledge. Learning contents are no longer delivered but integrated into versatile tasks. Even though these tasks are being performed individually by each player, the players' interaction with the app performed affects the whole community of learners. The current research paper presents the first results of an ongoing research project using mobile apps to enhance the Foreign Language Learning in a compulsory German language course at a Spanish University. In our paper we will firstly describe a specific app (Guess it! Language Trainer) which has been used to support students' independent language learning outside the classroom. Secondly, we will describe how the app encouraged students to get actively involved in their own learning processes and thirdly, how the teacher can use the information stored in the system to retrace and assess students' language learning. 14. In Need of Creative Mobile Service Ideas? Forget Adults and Ask Young Children

Abstract

It is well acknowledged that innovation is a key success factor in mobile service domain. Having creative ideas is the first critical step in the innovation process. Many studies suggest that customers are a valuable source of creative ideas. However, the literature also shows that adults may be constrained by existing technology frames, which are known to hinder creativity. Instead young children (aged 7-12) are considered digital natives yet are free from existing technology frames. This led us to study them as a potential source for creative mobile service ideas. A set of 41,000 mobile ideas obtained from a research project in 2006 granted us a unique opportunity to study the mobile service ideas from young children. We randomly selected two samples of ideas (N=400 each), one contained the ideas from young children, the other from adults (aged 17-50). These ideas were evaluated by several evaluators using an existing creativity framework. The results show that the mobile service ideas from the young children are significantly more original, transformational, implementable, and relevant than those from the adults. Therefore, this study shows that young children are better sources of novel and quality ideas than adults in the mobile services domain. This study bears significant contributions to the creativity and innovation research. 17. Color Space Mathematical Modeling Using Microsoft Excel

Abstract

Colorimetry allows every color to be defined as a combination of three values, known as "color coordinates." Color coordinates allow researchers to universalize and standardize their color measurements, and nowadays, determining the color coordinates of samples is a routine method applied by organic and analytical chemists, students, and specialists like enologists. Although the colorimetry method requires a simple experimental procedure, many students, researchers and teachers might find the mathematical treatment of the data too difficult. In this paper, we introduce two workbooks using Microsoft Excel with Microsoft Visual Basic that simplify the use of colorimetry: one of these workbooks is specifically oriented to students and teachers, and it includes explanations and information about each color model. The second workbook is aimed at researchers, and it allows them to introduce and analyze numerous samples at the same time. Finally, another workbook has been included that contains various sample spectra that teachers can use to improve student comprehension of color coordinates.

Instructional engineering provides methods to conduct the design and adaptation of competence development programmes by the combination of diverse learning components (i.e. units of learning, learning activities, learning resources and learning services). It occurs through an established process workflow in which models with diverse levels of abstraction are used to depict such learning components. This paper presents a model-driven generative method used to adapt and reuse a set of learning components for the delivery of a competence development programme concerned with a given learning objective and which serves for a specific instructional context. Abstract

The widespread adoption of computers and Internet in our life has reached the classrooms, where computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) based on wikis offers new ways of collaboration and encourages student participation. When the number of contributions from students increases, traditional assessment procedures of e-learning settings suffer from scalability problems. In a wiki-based learning experience, automatic tools are required to support the assessment of such huge amounts of data. In this work, we present StatMediaWiki, a tool that collects and aggregates information that helps to analyze a MediaWiki installation. It generates charts, tables and different statistics enabling easy analysis of wiki evolution. We have used StatMediaWiki in a Higher Education course and present the results obtained in this case study.

37. A Methodological Approach to Encourage the Service-Oriented Learning Systems Development

Abstract

The basic idea of service-oriented learning is that a learning environment should be conceived as a set of independent units of learning packaged as learning services. The design, development and deployment of a learning system based on integrating different learning services needs both a technological platform to support the system as well as a methodology that manages the development process. Such technological platform is provided by the Service Oriented Learning Architecture (SOLA). SOLA proposes an architecture style, which defines how to deploy several units of packeged-learning services. The purpose of this paper is to review the SOLA concept and to present a specific method based on specifying instructional domains, to complement the SOLA approach. Our method suggests the definition of a feature model, which represents the characteristics of the instructional domain, in order to address the identification and classification of candidate services. The approach here proposed facilitates the definition of candidate-learning services in order to enhance the integration of such services. (Contains 5 figures.)

38. Crosscutting Runtime Adaptations of LD Execution

Abstract

In this paper, the authors describe a mechanism for the introduction of small variations in the original learning design process defined in a particular Unit of Learning (UoL). The objective is to increase the UoL reusability by offering the designers an alternative to introduce slight variations on the original design instead of creating a new one each time they want to reuse it. No changes or extensions to the Learning Design definition are required to perform these modifications. The use of design patterns to include the adaptations offers the possibility to easily introduce new operations, such as tracing the activity progress, for instance. The structure of a Learning Design player that is able to process the desired adaptation information and to apply it at runtime will be outlined. The player will be part of an architecture for the automatic adaptation of UoLs to their actual context of execution. (Contains 11 figures and 2 tables.)

This paper analyses literature related to the impact of COVID-19 on family firms’ financial decisions. Presenting their distinctive characteristics and their responses to both past crises and the current one, the aim is to single out the key factors that ensure these firms’ economic continuity. The analysis of the key factors shown in the studies makes it possible to identify and understand behavioural aspects, such as those relating to business resilience, employed by owners of family firms, which take precedence over traditional financial management decisions. The analysis of the financial impact of the current crisis on family firms will help improve their resilience to future exogenous impacts.
