1. Creative Writers' Attitudes on Writing as Training Data for Large Language Models

Abstract: The use of creative writing as training data for large language models (LLMS) is highly contentious. While some argue that such use constitutes "fair use" and therefore does not require consent or compensation, others argue that consent and compensation is the morally correct approach. In this paper, we seek to understand how creative writers reason about the real or hypothetical use of their writing as training data and under what conditions, if any, they would consent to their writing being used. We interviewed 33 writers with variation across genre, method of publishing, degree of professionalization, and attitudes toward and engagement with LLMs. Through a grounded theory analysis, we report on core principles that writers express and how these principles can be at odds with their realistic expectations for how institutions engage with their work.

2. Using Multimedia to Help Agricultural Producers Communicate with Consumers about GMOs

Abstract: Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their uses are often misunderstood. Consumers are regularly unsure what GMOs are, or if they are safe for consumption and the environment. Contradictory and sometimes inaccurate information is available from numerous sources, and challenges consumers and others to separate the facts from sensationalized stories. Agricultural producers often communicate with consumers, neighbors, and members of the general public; however, they do not have information to share about GMOs. Multimedia resources can provide agricultural producers with science- based information to share with consumers. Agricultural communicators and Extension educators can create science- based multimedia resources to bridge the communication gap.

Abstract: A $(p, q)$-coloring of $K_n$ is a coloring of the edges of $K_n$ such that every $p$-clique has at least $q$ distinct colors among its edges. The generalized Ramsey number $f(n, p, q)$ is the minimum number of colors such that $K_n$ has a $(p, q)$-coloring. Gomez-Leos, Heath, Parker, Schweider and Zerbib recently proved $f(n, 5, 8) \ge \frac 67 (n-1)$. Here we prove an asymptotically matching upper bound.

Abstract: This article presents constraints on dark-matter-electron interactions obtained from the first underground data-taking campaign with multiple SuperCDMS HVeV detectors operated in the same housing. An exposure of 7.63 g-days is used to set upper limits on the dark-matter-electron scattering cross section for dark matter masses between 0.5 and 1000 MeV/$c^2$, as well as upper limits on dark photon kinetic mixing and axion-like particle axioelectric coupling for masses between 1.2 and 23.3 eV/$c^2$. Compared to an earlier HVeV search, sensitivity was improved as a result of an increased overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent, an anticoincidence event selection, and better pile-up rejection. Abstract: We show that the universal covering space of a connected component of a regular level set of a smooth complex valued function on ${\mathbb{C}}^2$, which is a smooth affine Riemann surface, is ${\mathbb{R}}^2$. This implies that the orbit space of the action of the covering group on ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ is the original affine Riemann surface.

Abstract: Systemic low-grade inflammation is a feature of chronic disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a common biomarker of inflammation and used as an indicator of disease risk; however, the role of inflammation in disease is not completely understood. Methylation is an epigenetic modification in the DNA which plays a pivotal role in gene expression. In this study we evaluated differential DNA methylation patterns associated with blood CRP level to elucidate biological pathways and genetic regulatory mechanisms to improve the understanding of chronic inflammation. The racially and ethnically diverse participants in this study were included as 50% White, 41% Black or African American, 7% Hispanic or Latino/a, and 2% Native Hawaiian, Asian American, American Indian, or Alaska Native (total n = 13,433) individuals. Abstract: Rationale & objectiveTubulointerstitial damage is a feature of early chronic kidney disease (CKD), but current clinical tests capture it poorly. Urine biomarkers of tubulointerstitial health may identify risk of CKD.Study designProspective cohort (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities [ARIC]) and case-cohort (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis [MESA] and Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke [REGARDS]).Setting & participantsAdults with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and without diabetes in the ARIC, REGARDS, and MESA studies.ExposuresBaseline urine monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), alpha-1-microglobulin (α1m), kidney injury molecule-1, epidermal growth factor, and chitinase-3-like protein 1.OutcomeIncident CKD or end-stage kidney disease.Analytical approachMultivariable Cox proportional hazards regression for each cohort; meta-analysis of results from all 3 cohorts.Results872 ARIC participants (444 cases of incident CKD), 636 MESA participants (158 cases), and 924 REGARDS participants (488 cases) were sampled. Across cohorts, mean age ranged from 60 ± 10 to 63 ± 8 years, and baseline eGFR ranged from 88 ± 13 to 91 ± 14 mL/min/1.73 m2. In ARIC, higher concentrations of urine MCP-1, α1m, and kidney injury molecule-1 were associated with incident CKD. In MESA, higher concentration of urine MCP-1 and lower concentration of epidermal growth factor were each associated with incident CKD. In REGARDS, none of the biomarkers were associated with incident CKD. In meta-analysis of all 3 cohorts, each 2-fold increase α1m concentration was associated with incident CKD (HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.08-1.31).LimitationsObservational design susceptible to confounding; competing risks during long follow-up period; meta-analysis limited to 3 cohorts.ConclusionsIn 3 combined cohorts of adults without prevalent CKD or diabetes, higher urine α1m concentration was independently associated with incident CKD. 4 biomarkers were associated with incident CKD in at least 1 of the cohorts when analyzed individually. Abstract: Background reduction in the SuperCDMS dark matter experiment depends on removing surface events within individual detectors by identifying the location of each incident particle interaction. Position reconstruction is achieved by combining pulse shape information over multiple phonon channels, a task well-suited to machine learning techniques. Data from an Am-241 scan of a SuperCDMS SNOLAB detector was used to study a selection of statistical approaches, including linear regression, artificial neural networks, and symbolic regression. Our results showed that simpler linear regression models were better able than artificial neural networks to generalize on such a noisy and minimal data set, but there are indications that certain architectures and training configurations can counter overfitting tendencies. This study will be repeated on a more complete SuperCDMS data set (in progress) to explore the interplay between data quality and the application of neural networks., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures. Abstract: We present non-perturbative lattice calculations of the low-lying meson and baryon spectrum of the SU(4) gauge theory with fundamental fermion constituents. This theory is one instance of stealth dark matter, a class of strongly coupled theories, where the lowest mass stable baryon is the dark matter candidate. This work constitutes the first milestone in the program to study stealth dark matter self-interactions. Here, we focus on reducing excited state contamination in the single baryon channel by applying the Laplacian Heaviside method, as well as projecting our baryon operators onto the irreducible representations of the octahedral group. We compare our resulting spectrum to previous work involving Gaussian smeared non-projected operators and find good agreement with reduced statistical uncertainties. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Plasma proenkephalin A (PENK-A) is a precursor of active enkephalins. Higher blood concentrations have been associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline in European populations. Due to the significant disparity in incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) between White and Black people, we evaluated the association of PENK-A with incident CKD and other kidney outcomes among a biracial cohort in the U.S. METHODS: In a nested cohort of 4,400 participants among the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke, we determined the association between baseline PENK-A concentration and incident CKD using the creatinine-cystatin C CKD-EPI 2021 equation without race coefficient, significant eGFR decline, and incident albuminuria between baseline and a follow-up visit 9.4 years later. We tested for race and sex interactions. We used inverse probability sampling weights to account for the sampling design. RESULTS: At baseline, mean (SD) age was 64 (8) years, 49% were women, and 52% were Black participants. 8.5% developed CKD, 21% experienced ≥ 30% decline in eGFR and 18% developed albuminuria. There was no association between PENK-A and incident CKD and no difference by race or sex. However, higher PENK-A was associated with increased odds of progressive eGFR decline (OR: 1.12; 95% CI 1.00, 1.25). Higher PENK-A concentration was strongly associated with incident albuminuria among patients without diabetes mellitus (OR: 1.29; 95% CI 1.09, 1.53). CONCLUSION: While PENK-A was not associated with incident CKD, its associations with progression of CKD and incident albuminuria, among patients without diabetes, suggest that it might be a useful tool in the evaluation of kidney disease among White and Black patients.

Abstract: People sometimes display moral flexibility by deciding that a commonly accepted moral norm ought not to apply in particular circumstances. But how? We explore this question in the context of queuing. We show that people's judgements about the moral permissibility of queue-cutting can be explained through cognitive processes related to moral contractualism: universalization, virtual bargaining, and functional thinking. Participants were presented vignettes depicting prospective queue-cutters, and asked whether it was morally permissible to queue-cut in those circumstances. We model these judgements with reference to the existence of a game-theoretic equilibrium supporting queue cutting in a repeated game, and to considerations of whether queue cutting would subvert or enact the function of a queue: if you pay the waiting cost, you should get the reward. These results support the notion that moral flexibility is in part related to contractualist moral principles.

20. Bargaining power, outside options, and moral judgment

Abstract: For contractualist accounts of morality, actions are moral if they correspond to what rational agents would agree to do, were they to negotiate explicitly. This, in turn, often depends on each party's bargaining power and on their outside options: what each of them could get in the absence of agreement. If there is an asymmetry, with one party enjoying higher bargaining power than another, this party can usually get a better deal ‚Äî as often happens in real negotiations. A strong test of contractualist accounts of morality, then, is whether moral judgments do take bargaining power into account. We explore this in three preregistered experiments (n = 1,616). We construct scenarios depicting everyday interactions between two parties in which one of them can perform a mutually beneficial but unpleasant action. We find that the same actions (asking the other to perform the unpleasant action, or explicitly refusing to do it) are perceived as less morally appropriate when performed by the party with worse outside options, as compared to the party with better outside options. Thus, participants tend to give more moral leeway to the party with higher bargaining power, and to hold the disadvantaged party to stricter moral standards. This effect appears to depend only on the relative ordering of outside options, but not the magnitude of the difference between them. We discuss implications for contractualist theories of moral cognition and the emergence and persistence of unfair norms and inequality.

21. Generalized Ramsey numbers at the linear and quadratic thresholds

Abstract: The generalized Ramsey number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that every $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. Erd\H{o}s and Gy\'arf\'as showed that $f(n, p, q)$ grows linearly in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{lin}}(p):=\binom p2-p+3$. Similarly they showed that $f(n, p, q)$ is quadratic in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{quad}}(p):=\binom p2-\frac p2+2$. In this note we improve on the known estimates for $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ and $f(n, p, q_{\text{quad}})$. Our proofs involve establishing a significant strengthening of a previously known connection between $f(n, p, q)$ and another extremal problem first studied by Brown, Erd\H{o}s and S\'os, as well as building on some recent progress on this extremal problem by Delcourt and Postle and by Shangguan. Abstract: The SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f=8$ nearly massless Dirac fermions has long been of theoretical and phenomenological interest due to the near-conformality arising from its proximity to the conformal window. One particularly interesting feature is the emergence of a relatively light, stable flavor-singlet scalar meson $\sigma$ $(J^{PC}=0^{++})$ in contrast to the $N_f=2$ theory QCD. In this work, we study the finite-volume dependence of the $\sigma$ meson correlation function computed in lattice gauge theory and determine the $\sigma$ meson mass and decay constant extrapolated to the infinite-volume limit. Abstract: We analyze newly expanded and refined data from lattice studies of an SU(3) gauge theory with eight Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. We focus on the light composite states emerging from these studies, consisting of a set of pseudoscalars and a single light scalar. We first consider the view that this theory is just outside the conformal window. In this case, the pseudoscalars arise from spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. Identifying the scalar in this case as an approximate dilaton, we fit the lattice data to a dilaton effective field theory, finding that it yields a good fit even at lowest order. For comparison, we then consider the possibility that the theory is inside the conformal window. The fermion mass provides a deformation, triggering confinement. Abstract: We measured the nuclear--recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a mono-energetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4\,keV down to 100\,eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100\,eV. These results call for further investigation of the ionization yield theory and a comprehensive determination of the detector response function at energies below the keV scale.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with COVID-19 is partly mediated by thromboinflammation. In noncritically ill patients with COVID-19, therapeutic-dose anticoagulation with heparin increased the probability of survival to hospital discharge with reduced use of cardiovascular or respiratory organ support. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether therapeutic-dose heparin reduces the incidence of AKI or death in noncritically ill patients hospitalized for COVID-19. METHODS: We report a prespecified secondary analysis of the ACTIV4a and ATTACC open-label, multiplatform randomized trial of therapeutic-dose heparin vs usual-care pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis on the incidence of severe AKI (≥2-fold increase in serum creatinine or initiation of kidney replacement therapy (KDIGO stage 2 or 3) or all-cause mortality in noncritically ill patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Bayesian statistical models were adjusted for age, sex, D-dimer, enrollment period, country, site, and platform. RESULTS: Among 1922 enrolled, 23 were excluded due to pre-existing end stage kidney disease and 205 were missing baseline or follow-up creatinine measurements. Severe AKI or death occurred in 4.4% participants assigned to therapeutic-dose heparin and 5.5% assigned to thromboprophylaxis (adjusted relative risk [aRR]: 0.72; 95% credible interval (CrI): 0.47, 1.10); the posterior probability of superiority for therapeutic-dose heparin (relative risk < 1.0) was 93.6%. Therapeutic-dose heparin was associated with a 97.7% probability of superiority to reduce the composite of stage 3 AKI or death (3.1% vs 4.6%; aRR: 0.64; 95% CrI: 0.40, 0.99) compared to thromboprophylaxis. CONCLUSION: Therapeutic-dose heparin was associated with a high probability of superiority to reduce the incidence of in-hospital severe AKI or death in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has been associated with endothelial injury, resultant microvascular inflammation and thrombosis. Activated endothelial cells release and express P-selectin and von Willebrand factor, both of which are elevated in severe COVID-19 and may be implicated in the disease pathophysiology. We hypothesized that crizanlizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody to P-selectin, would reduce morbidity and death in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. METHODS: An international, adaptive, randomized controlled platform trial, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, randomly assigned 422 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 with moderate or severe illness to receive either a single infusion of the P-selectin inhibitor crizanlizumab (at a dose of 5 mg/kg) plus standard of care or standard of care alone in an open-label 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was organ support-free days, evaluated on an ordinal scale consisting of the number of days alive free of organ support through the first 21 days after trial entry. RESULTS: The study was stopped for futility by the data safety monitoring committee. Among 421 randomized patients with known 21-day outcomes, 163 patients (77%) randomized to the crizanlizumab plus standard-of-care arm did not require any respiratory or cardiovascular organ support compared with 169 (80%) in the standard-of-care-alone arm. The adjusted odds ratio for the effect of crizanlizumab on organ support-free days was 0.70 (95% CI, 0.43-1.16), where an odds ratio >1 indicates treatment benefit, yielding a posterior probability of futility (odds ratio 1] = 0.879). CONCLUSIONS: Crizanlizumab, a P-selectin inhibitor, did not result in improvement in organ support-free days in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. REGISTRATION: URL: https://www. Abstract: We present a new analysis of previously published of SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood framework to search for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering these possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that are undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to $220~\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ at $2.7 \times 10^{-30}~\textrm{cm}^2$ via the bremsstrahlung channel. Abstract: The 2021-22 High-Energy Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. ``Snowmass 2021'') was organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Snowmass 2021 was a scientific study that provided an opportunity for the entire U.S. particle physics community, along with its international partners, to identify the most important scientific questions in High Energy Physics for the following decade, with an eye to the decade after that, and the experiments, facilities, infrastructure, and R&D needed to pursue them. This Snowmass summary report synthesizes the lessons learned and the main conclusions of the Community Planning Exercise as a whole and presents a community-informed synopsis of U.S. particle physics at the beginning of 2023. Abstract: Abstract Measurements from the CMS experiment at the LHC of dihadron correlations for charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV are presented. The results are reported as a function of the particle transverse momenta (p T) and collision centrality over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ). The observed two-dimensional correlation structure in Δη and Δϕ is characterised by a narrow peak at (Δη,Δϕ)≈(0,0) from jet-like correlations and a long-range structure that persists up to at least |Δη|=4. An enhancement of the magnitude of the short-range jet peak is observed with increasing centrality, especially for particles of p T around 1–2 GeV/c. The long-range azimuthal dihadron correlations are extensively studied using a Fourier decomposition analysis. The extracted Fourier coefficients are found to factorise into a product of single-particle azimuthal anisotropies up to p T≈3–3.5 GeV/c for at least one particle from each pair, except for the second-order harmonics in the most central PbPb events. Various orders of the single-particle azimuthal anisotropy harmonics are extracted for associated particle p T of 1–3 GeV/c, as a function of the trigger particle p T up to 20 GeV/c and over the full centrality range.

Abstract: In this paper we give geometric conditions so that the integral mapping of a Liouville integrable Hamiltonian system with a focus-focus equilibrium point has scattering monodromy. Using a complex version of the Morse lemma, we show that scattering monodromy is the same as the scattering monodromy of the standard focus-focus system.

Abstract: This report summarizes the findings of the CF1 Topical Subgroup to Snowmass 2021, which was focused on particle dark matter. One of the most important scientific goals of the next decade is to reveal the nature of dark matter (DM). To accomplish this goal, we must delve deep, to cover high priority targets including weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), and search wide, to explore as much motivated DM parameter space as possible. A diverse, continuous portfolio of experiments at large, medium, and small scales that includes both direct and indirect detection techniques maximizes the probability of discovering particle DM. Detailed calibrations and modeling of signal and background processes are required to make a convincing discovery. In the event that a candidate particle is found through different means, for example at a particle collider, the program described in this report is also essential to show that it is consistent with the actual cosmological DM. 47. The Localization Game on Directed Graphs

Abstract: In the Localization game played on graphs, a set of cops uses distance probes to identify the location of an invisible robber. We present an extension of the game and its main parameter, the localization number, to directed graphs. We present several bounds on the localization number of a directed graphs, including a tight bound via strong components, a bound using a linear programming problem on hypergraphs, and bounds in terms of pathwidth and DAG-width. A family of digraphs of order $n$ is given with localization number $(1-o(1))n/2$. We investigate the localization number of random and quasi-random tournaments, and apply our results to doubly regular tournaments, which include Paley tournaments.

Abstract: A $(4, 5)$-coloring of $K_n$ is an edge-coloring of $K_n$ where every $4$-clique spans at least five colors. We show that there exist $(4, 5)$-colorings of $K_n$ using $\frac 56 n + o(n)$ colors. This settles a disagreement between Erd\H{o}s and Gy\'arf\'as reported in their 1997 paper. Our construction uses a randomized process which we analyze using the so-called differential equation method to establish dynamic concentration. In particular, our coloring process uses random triangle removal, a process first introduced by Bollob\'as and Erd\H{o}s, and analyzed by Bohman, Frieze and Lubetzky.

Abstract: This paper details a calculation of the second order normal form of the Stark effect Hamiltonian after regularization, using the Kustaanheimo- Stiefel mapping. After reduction we obtain an integrable two degree of freedom system on $S^2_h \times S^2_h$ , which we reduce again to obtain a one degree of freedom Hamiltonian system.
