BackgroundThis Phase 1/2 study is based on the hypothesis that immune checkpoint inhibitors are more effective when given earlier in the course of the disease for advanced soft tissue sarcoma.MethodsPhase I endpoints-maximum tolerated dose in previously treated patients; Phase II endpoints-best response, progression free survival and overall survival and incidence of adverse events in previously untreated patients; Phase I treatments-escalating doses of trabectedin (1.0, 1.2, 1.5 mg/m2) as continuous intravenous infusion over 24 h every 3 weeks, 1 mg/kg of ipilimumab given intravenously every 12 weeks, and 3 mg/kg of nivolumab given intravenously every 2 weeks; Phase II treatments-maximum tolerated dose of trabectedin and defined doses of ipilimumab and nivolumab.ResultsPhase I (n = 9)-the maximum tolerated dose of trabectedin was 1.2 mg/m2; Phase II (n = 79)-6 complete responses, 14 partial responses, 49 stable disease, 25.3% best response rate, 87.3% disease control rate; median progression-free survival, 6.7 months (CI 95%: 4.4-7.9), median overall survival, 24.6 months (CI 95%: 17.0-.); Grade 3/4 therapy-related adverse events (n = 92)-increased ALT (25%), fatigue (8.7%), increased AST (8.7%), decreased neutrophil count (5.4%) and anemia (4.6%).ConclusionSAINT is a safe and effective first-line treatment for advanced soft tissue sarcoma.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that uses electromagnetic waves (EMW) to send, process, and store data by using a built-in integrated circuit and antenna. However, its susceptibility to malware attacks poses a threat to data privacy and system performance. Thus, there is a need to develop techniques to protect RFID systems from malware injection and improve efficiency through spectrum optimization. An approach for improving the efficiency and data privacy of RFID systems operating in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band is proposed for multiple data rates of 160, 256, 320, and 640 kbps. Firstly, a method is introduced for reconstructing regular data in a malware-free RFID system with optimized spectrum usage, which reaches up to 50% of the total spectrum and improves efficiency. Secondly, a spectrum injection-based approach (SIBA) is proposed by incorporating a bandpass filtering (BPF) technique to inject the missing spectrum of regular data with a portion of the malware-injected data spectrum. This approach results in faster and more precise data reconstruction with higher accuracy and overcomes the malware. A noise reduction technique based on BPF is also proposed to reduce the noise effects and enhance the accuracy of data reconstruction at different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels. This technique is evaluated through extensive analysis with various metrics such as reconstruction accuracy, robustness to noise, bandwidth utilization factor (BUF), and computational complexity, making it suitable for resource-constrained environmental settings. These approaches address the challenges of malware injection and spectrum optimization, resulting in more efficient and secure RFID systems.

In this work, a wideband airborne reflector-based ground penetrating radar (GPR) is designed and proposed. The proposed GPR consists of 15 discrete panels, each panel supported by a single multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A lightweight, wideband Vivaldi antenna was developed as the feed structure. The antenna operates within the frequency range of 100–500 MHz and has a bandwidth of 387 MHz. The proposed antenna will possess a penetration depth of 2 m. Different panel configurations are studied and it is found that 15 discrete panels each with a dimension of 30 cm by 4 m and separated by 30 cm acts as a reflector antenna with a high gain of 14.25 dBi.

BackgroundIntratumoral injection of talimogene laherparepvec evokes a cytotoxic immune response. Therefore, the combination of talimogene laherparepvec with trabectedin and nivolumab may have synergistic effects in advanced sarcomas.Patients and methodsThis phase 2 trial was conducted from May 30, 2019 to January 31, 2022. Endpoints: Primary: Progression free survival rate at month 12. Secondary: Best overall response, progression free survival rate at 6 and 9 months, overall survival rate at 6, 9, and 12 months, incidence of conversion of an unresectable tumor to a resectable tumor, and incidence of adverse events. Eligible patients had to be ≥ 18 years of age, have advanced histologically proven sarcoma, at least 1 previous chemotherapy regimen, and at least one accessible tumor for intratumoral injection. Treatment: Trabectedin intravenously (1.2 mg/m2 q3 weeks), nivolumab intravenously (3 mg/kg q2 weeks), and intratumoral talimogene laherparepvec (1x108 plaque forming units/ml q2 weeks).ResultsMedian time of follow-up: 15.2 months. Efficacy analysis: Thirty-nine patients who had completed at least one treatment cycle and had a follow-up computerized tomography were evaluable for efficacy analysis. Median number of prior therapies: 4 (range 1-11). Progression free survival rate at month 12, 36.7%. Confirmed Best Overall Response by Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors v1.1 = 3 partial responses, 30 stable disease, 6 progressive disease. Best Overall Response Rate, 7.7%, Disease Control Rate, 84.6%; median progression free survival, 7.8 (95% Confidence Intervals: 4.1-13.1) months; 6-, 9-, 12-month progression free survival rates, 54.5%/45.9%/36.7%; median overall survival 19.3 (95% Confidence Intervals: 12.8 -.) months; 6-, 9- and 12-month overall survival rate, 86.9%/73.3%/73.3%. One patient had a complete surgical resection. Fifty percent of patients had a ≥ grade 3 treatment related adverse events which included anemia (6%), thrombocytopenia (6%), neutropenia (4%), increased alanine transaminase (4%), decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (4%), dehydration (4%), hyponatremia (4%).ConclusionsTaken together these data suggest that the TNT regimen is effective and safe for advanced previously treated sarcomas, and is worth being further studied in a randomized phase 3 trial as first- or second- line treatment for patients with advanced sarcomas.

Steadily increasing ethnic and cultural diversity in the United States has led employers to see intercultural competence as a valuable and necessary trait for those entering the workforce, including students studying psychology. One high-impact practice that may increase students' multicultural awareness is study abroad. The current research examined the effectiveness of a cultural scavenger hunt offered during two short-term study abroad programs to increase participants' intercultural competencies. Cultural competence was assessed in Study 1 (N = 10) using the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale--Short Form. Results indicated a statistically significant increase across all subscales. In Study 2 (N = 16), the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory was utilized. Results from Study 2 demonstrated statistically significant improvements in the Emotional Resilience subscale. These findings suggest that a cultural scavenger hunt may assist participants in actively engaging in the local culture and facilitate the initial development of intercultural competencies.

Rare copy number variants (CNVs) disrupting ASTN2 or both ASTN2 and TRIM32 have been reported at 9q33.1 by genome-wide studies in a few individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The vertebrate-specific astrotactins, ASTN2 and its paralog ASTN1, have key roles in glial-guided neuronal migration during brain development. To determine the prevalence of astrotactin mutations and delineate their associated phenotypic spectrum, we screened ASTN2/TRIM32 and ASTN1 (1q25.2) for exonic CNVs in clinical microarray data from 89 985 individuals across 10 sites, including 64 114 NDD subjects. In this clinical dataset, we identified 46 deletions and 12 duplications affecting ASTN2. Deletions of ASTN1 were much rarer. Deletions near the 3' terminus of ASTN2, which would disrupt all transcript isoforms (a subset of these deletions also included TRIM32), were significantly enriched in the NDD subjects (P = 0.002) compared with 44 085 population-based controls. Frequent phenotypes observed in individuals with such deletions include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speech delay, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The 3'-terminal ASTN2 deletions were significantly enriched compared with controls in males with NDDs, but not in females. Upon quantifying ASTN2 human brain RNA, we observed shorter isoforms expressed from an alternative transcription start site of recent evolutionary origin near the 3' end. Spatiotemporal expression profiling in the human brain revealed consistently high ASTN1 expression while ASTN2 expression peaked in the early embryonic neocortex and postnatal cerebellar cortex. Our findings shed new light on the role of the astrotactins in psychopathology and their interplay in human neurodevelopment.

Current antennas used for communication with implantable medical devices are connected directly to the titanium device enclosure, but these enclosures are shrinking as batteries and circuits become smaller. Due to shrinking device size, a new approach is needed that allows the antenna to extend beyond the battery pack, or to be entirely separate from it. Softer properties are needed for antennas in direct contact with body tissues. This must be achieved without compromising the high electrical conductivities and stabilities required for acceptable performance. Here, a nanocomposite based approach was taken to create soft, biocompatible antennas that can be embedded in the fat layer as an alternative to the metallic antennas used today. The nanocomposite films combine the exceptional electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, and biostability of Au nanoparticles with the mechanical compliance, biocompatibility, and low water permeability of polyurethane. Nanocomposite film synthesis utilized flocculation and vacuum assisted filtration methods. The soft antenna films display high conductivities (∼103 S/m–105 S/m), reduced Young’s moduli (∼102 MPa–103 MPa), exceptional biocompatibilities characterized by in vivo and in vitro work, and notable biostabilities characterized by accelerated degradation studies. Consequently, the nanocomposite antennas are promising for chronic in vivo performance when the conductivity is above 103 S/m.

Orientation: The employer–employee relationship is becoming increasingly strained, evidenced by the increase in cases referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration. These disputes are presumed to be a consequence of breach of the psychological contract of undelivered expectations or obligations. There seems to be a need to improve the management of employer–employee relationships. Research purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to identify inducements and obligations made known by organisations on their websites. Motivation for the study: Clarity of inducements and expectations may provide a foundation to proactively improve the employer–employee relationship. Research approach/design and method: A quantitative content analysis was identified inducements and expectations on the websites of the 2015 Business Times Top 100 organisations. As two of the companies had merged with existing companies, a total of 98 companies were analysed. A codebook on content associated with the psychological contract generated quantitative data from a qualitative analysis. Main findings: Comparisons between different industries (manufacturing, wholesale and financial services) yielded significant differences between organisational policies and career development inducements. Comparisons revealed that organisations with a career section convey more inducements and expectations than organisations without a career section. Practical/managerial implications: Organisations are offered a means to identify inducements and expectations that are publicly conveyed through their websites and inform the psychological contract. Contribution/value-add: The findings contribute to existing theory of the psychological contract. More insight is gained into the expression of inducements and expectations and the potential association with employees’ psychological contract.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) considerably impair equine health and productivity. Moreover, TBDs, particularly equine piroplasmosis, impede international movement and trade of equids, which is a vital component of the global horse racing industry. In the Philippines, horse racing is a lucrative industry generating millions of USD annually. However, information on equine TBDs is scarce. This study intended to describe molecularly the equine tick-borne infections in a racehorse park in Cavite, Philippines and identify the risk factors associated with the infections. One hundred twenty-four (n = 124) thoroughbred racehorses were sampled and screened for selected tick-borne protozoan and bacterial pathogens using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Racehorses were positive for Babesia caballi (12.10%; 15/124), Theileria equi (0.81%; 1/124), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (10.48%; 13/124), Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (38.71%; 48/124), A. marginale (0.81%; 1/124), and Coxiella burnetii (0.81%; 1/124). Rickettsia was not detected in the samples. Gender was determined as a significant risk factor for B. caballi infection. Sequencing analysis revealed that seven partial 18S rRNA B. caballi isolates shared 98.63–100% identity with each other and were classified as genotype A. Meanwhile, the sequence obtained from the lone T. equi-positive sample was 99.77% identical to isolates from Spain, Switzerland, China, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, and was confirmed as genotype E based on the 18S rRNA gene. Eight Anaplasma 16S rRNA partial sequences were highly identical to A. phagocytophilum and A. ovis. Partial sequences of Borrelia 5–23S rRNA were most closely related to B. japonica and other Borrelia sp. isolates from various countries. This study reports the first molecular detection of Borrelia and Anaplasma and the identification of B. caballi and T. equi genotypes in racehorses in the Philippines. Findings from this study shall be useful in crafting equine tick and TBD control and prevention programs in the country.

Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a developmental disorder of early childhood onset, affects males four times more frequently than females, suggesting a role for the sex chromosomes. In this study, we describe a family with ASD in which a predicted pathogenic nonsense mutation in the X-chromosome gene RAB39B segregates with ASD phenotype. Methods Clinical phenotyping, microarray, and whole genome sequencing (WGS) were performed on the five members of this family. Maternal and female sibling X inactivation ratio was calculated, and phase was investigated. Mutant-induced pluripotent stem cells engineered for an exon 2 nonsense mutation were generated and differentiated into cortical neurons for expression and pathway analyses. Results Two males with an inherited RAB39B mutation both presented with macrocephaly, intellectual disability (ID), and ASD. Their female sibling with the same mutation presented with ID and a broad autism phenotype. In contrast, their transmitting mother has no neurodevelopmental diagnosis. Our investigation of phase indicated maternal preferential inactivation of the mutated allele, with no such bias observed in the female sibling. We offer the explanation that this bias in X inactivation may explain the absence of a neurocognitive phenotype in the mother. Our cellular knockout model of RAB39B revealed an impact on expression in differentiated neurons for several genes implicated in brain development and function, supported by our pathway enrichment analysis. Conclusions Penetrance for ASD is high among males but more variable among females with RAB39B mutations. A critical role for this gene in brain development and function is demonstrated.

Purpose: This paper aims to focus on Master of Business Administration (MBA) alumni and their ability to provide institution-specific insights into MBA program delivery. Given desired MBA positioning dimensions, a case exemplar is used to reveal gaps between "should have" program emphases and "actual" emphases. Departures from expectations are used to reveal either under- or over-emphases which require repair. Design/methodology/approach: The study develops a gap assessment procedure and the theory of gaps, and it presents insights into the prioritization of gaps for closing through the revelation of gap themes of varying magnitude. It also reveals the benefits and the limitations of emphasis-based gap assessments. Additionally, the study addresses the complexity of creating the dimensional structure for MBA program gap revelation. Findings: This paper reports on the issues of framing dimensions, including the possibility of dimensional omissions, with a particular emphasis on the utilization of an emphasis-based gap model within an "a priori" identified structure. Practical implications: The methodological approach provides a blueprint for additional program review, and it produces a strong structural base for MBA program positioning. It is also is particularly important in evaluating newly created one-year MBA programs. Originality/value: The work reveals the potential for the revelation of both under- and over-emphases in MBA program delivery and the possible issue of sub-optimization in gap closing (i.e. the closing of one gap while opening another).

Auger processes are at the core of electron emission in solid-state physics, however measuring the spectra of electrons emitted solely as a result of Auger transitions remains a challenge. Here, the authors measure the electron energy spectrum in graphene and observe the prominence of Auger-like processes in its valence band.

Abstract Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental condition of early childhood onset, which impacts socio-communicative functioning and is principally genetic in etiology. Currently, more than 50 genomic loci are deemed to be associated with susceptibility to autism spectrum disorder, showing de novo and inherited unbalanced copy number variants and smaller insertions and deletions (indels), more complex structural variants, as well as single-nucleotide variants deemed of pathological significance. However, the phenotypes associated with many of these genes are variable, and penetrance is largely unelaborated in clinical descriptions. This case report describes a family harboring two copy number variant microdeletions, which affect regions of NRXN1 and MBD5—each well-established in association with risk of autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Although each copy number variant would likely be categorized as pathologically significant, both genomic alterations are transmitted in this family from an unaffected father to the proband, and shared by an unaffected sibling. This family case illustrates the importance of recognizing that phenotype can vary among exon overlapping variants of the same gene, and the need to evaluate penetrance of such variants in order to properly inform on risks.

Orientation: Retaining and developing talented top- and middle-level managers who possess organisational-specific skills and experience promotes competitive advantage for organisations and is a long-term investment. Research purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore challenges to retention and effective retention strategies for top- and middle-level managers. Motivation for the study: Human resource (HR) managers are facing difficulties retaining managers as a result of ineffective retention strategies. This study aims to provide insight into suggested strategies to retain such managers. Research design, approach and method: A cross-sectional survey, using an instrument developed from the literature, was completed by 97 HR management professionals registered with the South African Board of People Practices. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted as well as group comparisons. Main findings: Results revealed that leadership and performance management practices are considered to be effective retention strategies for top- and middle-level managers. Practical and managerial implications: Having a deeper understanding of effective retention strategies for top- and middle-level managers can assist HR professionals in retaining these employees. Contribution or value add: This study adds to the insights of HR professionals, line managers and leaders in organisations regarding retention challenges and effective retention strategies for top- and middle-level managers.

The aim of the study was to investigate whether an intervention to address post-graduate student plagiarism in an Honours programme in Human Resource Management at a South African university had an impact one-year later. In a quasi-experimental design, the sample comprised 34 students in a control group and 70 students in two intervention groups. Student essays were examined for different types of plagiarism at two different times and compared by means of Wilcoxon Signed-Rank and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Findings indicate that students who were exposed to both parts of an intervention evidenced less plagiarism in their essays one year later than those who were exposed to only one part of the intervention or no intervention at all. https://doi.org/10.19108/KOERS.82.1.2305

The authors utilized a gap analysis approach to assess general IS knowledge and skill voids or overages in a specific program context. The authors asked alumni to reveal the emphasis that should have been given to 10 IS knowledge and skill areas and compared the results with the emphasis that was actually given. They proceed by relating the revealed gaps to IS program attitude, thus providing a means for gap prioritization and attitudinal improvement. The authors develop perspectives into the implications of gap results, as well as other issues and limitations. (Contains 4 tables.)

A comprehensive understanding of the basic visual and cognitive abilities of individuals with mental retardation is critical for understanding the basis of mental retardation and for the design of remediation programs. We assessed visual search abilities in individuals with mild mental retardation and in MA- and CA-matched comparison groups. Our goal was to determine the effect of decreasing target-distracter disparities on visual search efficiency. Results showed that search rates for the group with mental retardation and the MA-matched comparisons were more negatively affected by decreasing disparities than were those of the CA-matched group. The group with mental retardation and the MA-matched group performed similarly on all tasks. Implications for theory and application are discussed.

Background: Standard case criteria are proposed for combined use of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule to diagnose autism and to define the broader category of autism spectrum disorders. Method: Single and combined Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule algorithms were compared to best estimate diagnoses in four samples: U.S. (n = 960) and Canadian (n = 232) participants 3 years and older, U.S. participants younger than 36 months (n = 270), and U.S. participants older than 36 months with profound mental retardation (n = 67). Results: Sensitivities and specificities of 80% and higher were obtained when strict criteria for an autism diagnosis using both instruments were applied in the U.S. samples, and 75% or greater in the Canadian sample. Single-instrument criteria resulted in significant loss of specificity. Specificity was poor in the sample with profound mental retardation. Lower sensitivity and specificity were also obtained when proposed criteria for broader spectrum disorders were applied. Conclusions: The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule make independent, additive contributions to the judgment of clinicians that result in a more consistent and rigorous application of diagnostic criteria. In this article, the authors provide insight into alumni perceptions of Master of Business Administration (MBA) program return on investment (ROI). They sought to assess the relative value of skills, knowledge, and teaching methods in explaining ROI. By developing insight into the drivers of ROI, the real utility of MBA program ingredients can be used for program positioning. The use of ROI is increasing throughout marketing and other business units, and its application as an outcome metric in the academy has become increasingly overdue.

This study demonstrates the role of a principal components factor analysis in conducting a gap analysis as to the desired characteristics of business alumni. Typically, gap analyses merely compare the emphases that should be given to areas of inquiry with perceptions of actual emphases. As a result, the focus is upon depth of coverage. A neglected area in need of investigation is the breadth of topic dimensions and their differences between the normative (should offer) and the descriptive (actually offer). The implications of factor structures, as well as traditional gap analyses, are developed and discussed in the context of outcomes assessment.

Orientation: The management context is dynamic; this is especially evident in human capital as the primary source of value creation as opposed to physical and natural resources. In response, measurement methodologies have moved from a transactional approach (strategy implementation) to a transformational approach (human capital contribution paradigm), as well as diverging into different purposes. To date, there has been little overlap on recent domains to consider in managing and measuring the contribution of the human resource function and employees, and how to unlock and add value. Research purpose: The aim of the study was to explore and describe changing domains within human capital management to be managed and measured. Motivation for the study: The motivation was to advance the understanding of changing measurement domains to aid practitioners to manage and measure the contribution of the human resource function and employees, in order to unlock and add value and ultimately contribute to the success of an organisation. Research design, approach and method: Unstructured, in-depth interview data of purposively selected cases from a selected panel of human resource practitioners specialising in human capital measurement was thematically analysed in this exploratory-descriptive investigation. Main findings: Findings suggested that seven domains should be managed and measured. These domains highlight new areas of impact and levels of management. In addition, crossdomain relationships in measurement allow for an understanding of the impact and potential value on which to capitalise. Practical/managerial implications: New domains to manage and measure focus the attention of practitioners beyond the transactional performance management paradigm to a transformational approach to influence the business strategy. Higher education institutions need to develop students’ cognitive skills to facilitate systems thinking. Contribution: This study suggests a new approach to managing and measuring the human capital function and the workforce.

Orientation: Physical and natural resources have been surpassed by human capital as aresource of wealth creation. As a result, senior management relies increasingly on appropriatepeople information to drive strategic change. Yet, measurement within the human resourcefunction predominantly informs decisions in support of efficiency and effectiveness. Consequently, dissimilar understanding of measurement expectations between these partieslargely continues. Research purpose: The study explored principles in selecting human capital measurements,drawing on the views and recommendations of human resource management professionals,all experts in human capital measurement. Motivation for the study: The motivation was to advance the understanding of selectingappropriate and strategic valid measurements, in order for human resource practitioners tocontribute to creating value and driving strategic change. Research design, approach and method: A qualitative approach, with purposively selectedcases from a selected panel of human capital measurement experts, generated a datasetthrough unstructured interviews, which were analysed thematically. Main findings: Nineteen themes were found. They represent a process that considers thecentrality of the business strategy and a systemic integration across multiple value chains inthe organisation through business partnering, in order to select measurements and generatemanagement level-appropriate information. Practical/managerial implications: Measurement practitioners, in partnership withmanagement from other functions, should integrate the business strategy across multiplevalue chains in order to select measurements. Analytics becomes critical in discoveringrelationships and formulating hypotheses to understand value creation. Higher educationinstitutions should produce graduates able to deal with systems thinking and to operatewithin complexity. Contribution: This study identified principles to select measurements and metrics. Noticeableis the move away from the interrelated scorecard perspectives to a systemic view of theorganisation in order to understand value creation. In addition, the findings may help toposition the human resource management function as a strategic asset.
