1. You Only Prune Once: Designing Calibration-Free Model Compression With Policy Learning

Abstract: The ever-increasing size of large language models (LLMs) presents significant challenges for deployment due to their heavy computational and memory requirements. Current model pruning techniques attempt to alleviate these issues by relying heavily on external calibration datasets to determine which parameters to prune or compress, thus limiting their flexibility and scalability across different compression ratios. Moreover, these methods often cause severe performance degradation, particularly in downstream tasks, when subjected to higher compression rates. In this paper, we propose PruneNet, a novel model compression method that addresses these limitations by reformulating model pruning as a policy learning process. PruneNet decouples the pruning process from the model architecture, eliminating the need for calibration datasets. It learns a stochastic pruning policy to assess parameter importance solely based on intrinsic model properties while preserving the spectral structure to minimize information loss. PruneNet can compress the LLaMA-2-7B model in just 15 minutes, achieving over 80% retention of its zero-shot performance with a 30% compression ratio, outperforming existing methods that retain only 75% performance. Furthermore, on complex multitask language understanding tasks, PruneNet demonstrates its robustness by preserving up to 80% performance of the original model, proving itself a superior alternative to conventional structured compression techniques.

2. Tailoring magnetic properties of CoFeB films via tungsten buffer and capping layers

Abstract: Controlling the interface between W and CoFeB-based buffer or capping layers at an appropriate temperature is essential for modifying the strength of magnetic anisotropy. In this work, we systematically explore the impact of W buffer and capping layers on the structural, topological, and magnetic anisotropy properties of W (5 nm)/CoFeB(10 nm) and CoFeB(10 nm)/W(3 nm) bilayers sputtered at room temperature (RT) and annealed at an optimal annealing temperature (TA) of 400 C. Our findings demonstrate that the bilayer films uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) with out-of-plane coercivity (Hcp) is highly influenced by the W buffer, capping layers, and TA. Specifically, the Hcp of the CoFeB layer with the buffer and capping layers annealed at 400 C samples exceed several times the coercivity of those unannealed. CoFeB buffered with W and annealed at 400 C shows larger Hcp, two-fold UMA, and higher in-plane UMA energy density (Keff) than the CoFeB/W bilayers, which can be attributed to the W buffer layer inducing the crystallization of CoFeB during annealing. The W buffer, capping layers, and the TA for W and CoFeB-based bilayer samples significantly alter the surface morphology, grain sizes, and surface roughness. The XRD analysis reveals nano-crystallites embedded in the larger grains of the 400 C annealed samples. Hence, this work offers a promising approach to achieving high thermal stability of UMA in W and CoFeB-based spintronic applications.

3. Observable Signatures of RN Black Holes with Dark Matter Halos via Strong Gravitational Lensing and Constraints from EHT Observations

Abstract: We investigate the impact of dark matter halos on the gravitational lensing produced by electrically charged, spherically symmetric black holes in the strong-field regime. The study focuses on two dark matter models: the Universal Rotation Curve Model and the cold dark matter model. We derive the coefficients for the strong deflection limit and numerically analyze the deflection angle variations. Graphical representations of the results show that the strong deflection angle, $\alpha_D$ , increases with the charge parameter $Q$ in the presence of a dark matter halo. We explore the astrophysical consequences for the supermassive black holes $M87^*$ and $SgrA^*$ , comparing the results with standard Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m and Schwarzschild black holes via strong gravitational lensing observations. Our findings suggest that charged black holes with dark matter halos can be differentiated from standard black holes. We constrain the charge parameter $Q$ using observational data from the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. For $M87^*$ , we find $0 \leq |Q| \leq 0.366M$ with the Universal Rotation Curve model and $0 \leq |Q| \leq 0.364M$ with the cold dark matter model. For $SgrA^*$ , the constraints are $0 \leq |Q| \leq 0.586M$ and $0 \leq |Q| \leq 0.584M$, respectively. 4. A characterization of uniform distribution using varextropy with application in testing uniformity

Abstract: In statistical analysis, quantifying uncertainties through measures such as entropy, extropy, varentropy, and varextropy is of fundamental importance for understanding distribution functions. This paper investigates several properties of varextropy and give a new characterization of uniform distribution using varextropy. The alredy proposed estimators are used as a test statistics. Building on the characterization of the uniform distribution using varextropy, we give a uniformity test. The critical value and power of the test statistics are derived. The proposed test procedure is applied to a real-world dataset to assess its performance and effectiveness.

5. Risk-Averse Finetuning of Large Language Models

Abstract: We consider the challenge of mitigating the generation of negative or toxic content by the Large Language Models (LLMs) in response to certain prompts. We propose integrating risk-averse principles into LLM fine-tuning to minimize the occurrence of harmful outputs, particularly rare but significant events. By optimizing the risk measure of Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR), our methodology trains LLMs to exhibit superior performance in avoiding toxic outputs while maintaining effectiveness in generative tasks. 6. Space-time isogeometric method for a linear fourth order time dependent problem

Abstract: This article focuses on the space-time isogeometric method for a linear time dependent fourth order problem. Using an auxiliary variable, first the problem is split into a system of two second order differential equations and then the system is discretized by employing the tensor product spline spaces of time and spatial variables. We use the Babuska's theorem to prove the well-posedness of the continuous variational formulation. Also, the inf-sup stability condition at discrete level is established, which we use to prove the error estimates for the proposed method. Finally, to demonstrate the convergence of the scheme, few numerical results are reported.

7. Improving signal-to-noise ratios in pump-probe spectroscopy on light-sensitive samples by adapting pulse repetition rates

Abstract: Ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study dynamics in solid materials on femto- and picosecond timescales. In such experiments, a pump pulse induces dynamics inside a sample by impulsive light-matter interaction, resulting in dynamics that can be detected using a time-delayed probe pulse. In addition to the desired dynamics, the initial interaction may also lead to unwanted effects that may result in irreversible changes and even damage. Therefore, the achievable signal strength is often limited by the pumping conditions that a sample can sustain. Here we investigate the optimization of ultrafast photoacoustics in various solid thin films. We perform systematic experiments aimed at maximizing the achievable signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio in a given measurement time while limiting sample damage. By varying pump and probe pulse energies, average pump fluence, and repetition rate, we identify different paths towards optimal SNR depending on material properties. Abstract: Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. Abstract: The automatic generation of counter-speech (CS) is a critical strategy for addressing hate speech by providing constructive and informed responses. However, existing methods often fail to generate high-quality, impactful, and scalable CS, particularly across diverse linguistic contexts. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology to enhance CS generation by aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) using Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) and Direct Preference Optimization (DPO). Our approach leverages DPO to align LLM outputs with human preferences, ensuring contextually appropriate and linguistically adaptable responses. Additionally, we incorporate knowledge grounding to enhance the factual accuracy and relevance of generated CS. Experimental results demonstrate that DPO-aligned models significantly outperform SFT baselines on CS benchmarks while scaling effectively to multiple languages. These findings highlight the potential of preference-based alignment techniques to advance CS generation across varied linguistic settings. 10. SKETCH: Structured Knowledge Enhanced Text Comprehension for Holistic Retrieval

Abstract: Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems have become pivotal in leveraging vast corpora to generate informed and contextually relevant responses, notably reducing hallucinations in Large Language Models. Despite significant advancements, these systems struggle to efficiently process and retrieve information from large datasets while maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the context. This paper introduces SKETCH, a novel methodology that enhances the RAG retrieval process by integrating semantic text retrieval with knowledge graphs, thereby merging structured and unstructured data for a more holistic comprehension. SKETCH, demonstrates substantial improvements in retrieval performance and maintains superior context integrity compared to traditional methods. Evaluated across four diverse datasets: QuALITY, QASPER, NarrativeQA, and Italian Cuisine-SKETCH consistently outperforms baseline approaches on key RAGAS metrics such as answer_relevancy, faithfulness, context_precision and context_recall. Notably, on the Italian Cuisine dataset, SKETCH achieved an answer relevancy of 0.94 and a context precision of 0.99, representing the highest performance across all evaluated metrics. 11. Multiplexing in Networks and Diffusion

Abstract: Social and economic networks are often multiplexed, meaning that people are connected by different types of relationships -- such as borrowing goods and giving advice. We make three contributions to the study of multiplexing. First, we document empirical multiplexing patterns in Indian village data: relationships such as socializing, advising, helping, and lending are correlated but distinct, while commonly used proxies for networks based on ethnicity and geography are nearly uncorrelated with actual relationships. Second, we examine how these layers and their overlap affect information diffusion in a field experiment. The advice network is the best predictor of diffusion, but combining layers improves predictions further. Villages with greater overlap between layers (more multiplexing) experience less overall diffusion. This leads to our third contribution: developing a model and theoretical results about diffusion in multiplex networks. Multiplexing slows the spread of simple contagions, such as diseases or basic information, but can either impede or enhance the spread of complex contagions, such as new technologies, depending on their virality. Finally, we identify differences in multiplexing by gender and connectedness. These have implications for inequality in diffusion-mediated outcomes such as access to information and adherence to norms.

12. Adaptive Manipulation for Coalitions in Knockout Tournaments

Abstract: Knockout tournaments, also known as single-elimination or cup tournaments, are a popular form of sports competitions. In the standard probabilistic setting, for each pairing of players, one of the players wins the game with a certain (a priori known) probability. Due to their competitive nature, tournaments are prone to manipulation. We investigate the computational problem of determining whether, for a given tournament, a coalition has a manipulation strategy that increases the winning probability of a designated player above a given threshold. More precisely, in every round of the tournament, coalition players can strategically decide which games to throw based on the advancement of other players to the current round. We call this setting adaptive constructive coalition manipulation. To the best of our knowledge, while coalition manipulation has been studied in the literature, this is the first work to introduce adaptiveness to this context. We show that the above problem is hard for every complexity class in the polynomial hierarchy. On the algorithmic side, we show that the problem is solvable in polynomial time when the coalition size is a constant. Furthermore, we show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the coalition size and the size of a minimum player set that must include at least one player from each non-deterministic game. Lastly, we investigate a generalized setting where the tournament tree can be imbalanced.

For colorization, we neither require precise registration between MRI and Cryosection images, nor segmentation of MRI images. Additionally, our architecture incorporates a feature compression-and-activation mechanism to capture organ-level global information and suppress noise, enabling the distinction of organ-specific data in MRI scans for more accurate and realistic organ-specific colorization. Furthermore, we explore the robustness of the LLM evaluator by using perturbed inputs. Abstract: We study the galaxies hosting ultra-strong MgII (USMgII) absorbers at small impact parameters of $\sim$2" (5 - 20 kpc), spanning a redshift range of $0.4 \le z \le 1.7$, using deep, high-resolution images from Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Survey and spectra from SDSS survey. From a total of 418 USMgII absorbers with $W_{2796}\ \ge 3 \mathring{A}$, along 412 quasar sightlines, we detect 50 galaxies based on [O II] $\lambda\lambda$3727,3729 nebular emission detected at $\ge 2\sigma$ level. Utilizing the [O II] emission from the stacked spectrum and employing the best-fit galaxy SED template, we further identify 86 galaxies, leading to a total of 136 bona fide USMgII galaxies. With a prerequisite of having a minimum of four HSC passbands available, we find a detection rate of $\sim$38% at an average impact parameter of 11.4 kpc. We find that galaxies hosting USMgII systems are typically star-forming main sequence galaxies, with 21% exhibiting a starburst nature. The non-zero [O II] emission along the `clear' sightlines, with no stellar counterpart, hints that the USMgII absorbers may likely emanate from the unseen faint galaxies near the quasar. The USMgII absorbers preferentially align along the major and minor axes of the galaxy, which suggests that they originate in the disk or large-scale wind. We show that the distribution of $W_{2796}$ as a function of impact parameter indicates a discernible radial dependence for the `disk' and `wind' subsets, with the observed large scatter in $W_{2796}$ potentially attributed to large-scale outflows. Likewise, biometric systems that operate independently are at risk of template spoofing and replay incidents. This paper introduces a biocryptosystem utilizing face recognition techniques to address these issues, allowing for the encryption and decryption of various file types through the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The proposed system creates a distinct 32-bit encryption key derived from facial features identified by Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and categorized using Support Vector Machines (SVM). HOG efficiently identifies edge-aligned facial features, even in dim lighting, ensuring that reliable biometric keys can be generated. This key is then used with AES to encrypt and decrypt a variety of data formats, such as text, audio, and video files. This encryption key, derived from an individual's distinctive facial traits, is exceedingly challenging for adversaries to reproduce or guess. The security and performance of the system have been validated through experiments using several metrics, including correlation analysis, Shannon entropy, normalized Hamming distance, and the avalanche effect on 25 different file types. Abstract: We introduce FathomGPT, an open source system for the interactive investigation of ocean science data via a natural language interface. FathomGPT was developed in close collaboration with marine scientists to enable researchers to explore and analyze the FathomNet image database. FathomGPT provides a custom information retrieval pipeline that leverages OpenAI's large language models to enable: the creation of complex queries to retrieve images, taxonomic information, and scientific measurements; mapping common names and morphological features to scientific names; generating interactive charts on demand; and searching by image or specified patterns within an image. In designing FathomGPT, particular emphasis was placed on enhancing the user's experience by facilitating free-form exploration and optimizing response times. We present an architectural overview and implementation details of FathomGPT, along with a series of ablation studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach to name resolution, fine tuning, and prompt modification. 20. Specification Generation for Neural Networks in Systems

Abstract: Specifications - precise mathematical representations of correct domain-specific behaviors - are crucial to guarantee the trustworthiness of computer systems. With the increasing development of neural networks as computer system components, specifications gain more importance as they can be used to regulate the behaviors of these black-box models. Traditionally, specifications are designed by domain experts based on their intuition of correct behavior. However, this is labor-intensive and hence not a scalable approach as computer system applications diversify. We hypothesize that the traditional (aka reference) algorithms that neural networks replace for higher performance can act as effective proxies for correct behaviors of the models, when available. This is because they have been used and tested for long enough to encode several aspects of the trustworthy/correct behaviors in the underlying domain. Driven by our hypothesis, we develop a novel automated framework, SpecTRA to generate specifications for neural networks using references. We formulate specification generation as an optimization problem and solve it with observations of reference behaviors. SpecTRA clusters similar observations into compact specifications. We present specifications generated by SpecTRA for neural networks in adaptive bit rate and congestion control algorithms. Our specifications show evidence of being correct and matching intuition. Moreover, we use our specifications to show several unknown vulnerabilities of the SOTA models for computer systems.

21. A Minimalistic 3D Self-Organized UAV Flocking Approach for Desert Exploration

Abstract: In this work, we propose a minimalistic swarm flocking approach for multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Our approach allows the swarm to achieve cohesively and aligned flocking (collective motion), in a random direction, without externally provided directional information exchange (alignment control). The method relies on minimalistic sensory requirements as it uses only the relative range and bearing of swarm agents in local proximity obtained through onboard sensors on the UAV. Thus, our method is able to stabilize and control the flock of a general shape above a steep terrain without any explicit communication between swarm members. To implement proximal control in a three-dimensional manner, the Lennard-Jones potential function is used to maintain cohesiveness and avoid collisions between robots. The performance of the proposed approach was tested in real-world conditions by experiments with a team of nine UAVs. Experiments also present the usage of our approach on UAVs that are independent of external positioning systems such as the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Relying only on a relative visual localization through the ultraviolet direction and ranging (UVDAR) system, previously proposed by our group, the experiments verify that our system can be applied in GNSS-denied environments. The degree achieved of alignment and cohesiveness was evaluated using the metrics of order and steady-state value.

Abstract: Plants display a range of temporal patterns of inter-annual reproduction, from relatively constant seed production to mast seeding, the synchronized and highly variable interannual seed production of plants within a population. Previous efforts have compiled global records of seed production in long-lived plants to gain insight into seed production, forest and animal population dynamics, and the effects of global change on masting. Existing datasets focus on seed production dynamics at the population scale but are limited in their ability to examine community-level mast seeding dynamics across different plant species at the continental scale. We harmonized decades of plant reproduction data for 141 woody plant species across nine Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) or long-term ecological monitoring sites from a wide range of habitats across the United States. Plant reproduction data are reported annually between 1957 and 2021 and based on either seed traps or seed and/or cone counts on individual trees. A wide range of woody plant species including trees, shrubs, and lianas are represented within sites allowing for direct community-level comparisons among species. We share code for filtering of data that enables the comparison of plot and individual tree data across sites. For each species, we compiled relevant life history attributes (e.g., seed mass, dispersal syndrome, seed longevity, sexual system) that may serve as important predictors of mast seeding in future analyses. To aid in phylogenetically informed analyses, we also share a phylogeny and phylogenetic distance matrix for all species in the dataset. These data can be used to investigate continent-scale ecological properties of seed production, including individual and population variability, synchrony within and across species, and how these properties of seed production vary in relation to plant species traits and environmental conditions. In addition, these data can be used to assess how annual variability in seed production is associated with climate conditions and how that varies across populations, species, and regions. Abstract: The human voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.5 (hNav1.5/SCN5A) plays a critical role in the initiation and propagation of action potentials in cardiac myocytes, and its modulation by various drugs has significant implications for cardiac safety. Drug-dependent block of Nav1.5 current (INa) can lead to significant alterations in cardiac electrophysiology, potentially resulting in conduction slowing and an increased risk of proarrhythmic events. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms by which various pharmacological agents interact with Nav1.5, focusing on the molecular determinants of drug binding and the resultant electrophysiological effects. We discuss the structural features of Nav1.5 that influence drug affinity and specificity. Special attention is given to the concept of state-dependent block, where drug binding is influenced by the conformational state of the channel, and its relevance to therapeutic efficacy and safety. The review also examines the clinical implications of INa block, highlighting case studies of drugs that have been associated with adverse cardiac events, and how the Vaughan-Williams Classification system has been employed to qualify unsafe sodium channel block. Furthermore, we explore the methodologies currently used to assess INa block in nonclinical and clinical settings, with the hope of providing a weight of evidence approach including in silico modeling, in vitro electrophysiological assays and in vivo cardiac safety studies for mitigating proarrhythmic risk early in drug discovery. This review underscores the importance of understanding Nav1.5 pharmacology in the context of drug development and cardiac risk assessment.

25. Spin Phonon Relaxation Dynamics from a Conical Intersection of Trapped Rydberg Ions

Abstract: Non-adiabatic processes near conical intersections are rooted in the stronger coupling between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. Using a system of two trapped Rydberg ions, their high polarizability and strong dipolar interactions allow to form a conical intersection, where dynamics takes place on a microsecond time scale. Rydberg lifetimes are typically from a few to tens of microseconds, which could affect the conical dynamics. We study the effect of the finite lifetime of the Rydberg state on the vibronic dynamics around the conical intersection via analyzing the master equation. Through mean field and numerical calculations, damping dynamics are found in both the phonon populations and electronic states depending on the initial states. 26. End-to-end QKD network with non-localized trust

Abstract: Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems are infamously known for their high demand on hardware, their extremely low key generation rates and their lack of security resulting from a need for trusted nodes which is implied by the absence of quantum repeaters. While they theoretically offer unlimited security, they are therefore practically limited in several regards. In this work we focus on the lack of options to guarantee an end-to-end security service with the currently available technology and infrastructure and propose a novel protocol. We find that one of the stumbling stones on the path towards an end-to-end security service guaranteed by quantum key distribution may be removed by using this protocol. Our proposal combines several parallel instances of twinfield QKD followed by classical postprocessing and communication to allow Alice and Bob to share a secret key. This hybrid approach improves the key rate and range w.r.t. to previous QKD approaches at a contained cost in security. We show that a coalition of intermediary nodes between Alice and Bob is needed to break the new scheme, sharply outperforming the trusted node approach in terms of security. Furthermore, the protocols do not require complex quantum measurements on Alice and Bob's sides, thus being truly end-to-end.

27. Robustness of WDM technique for the co-propagation of quantum with classical signals in an optical fiber

In particular for optical fiber links where wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is the dominant data transmission technique this results in the propagation of very weak quantum signals against a strong data signal background. With this work, we present a novel theoretical approach that studies the evolution of co-propagating quantum and classical signals that are launched using WDM. The important factors that contribute to crosstalk, such as the launch power of the classical signal and the separation between the two signals in terms of wavelength, are comprehensively analyzed. Interestingly, calculations show that only the first two nearest channels from the classical channel experience noticeable crosstalk whereas other distant channels have negligible crosstalk effect. 29. How parameter constraining can influence the mass accretion process of a Black Hole in the Generalized Rastall Gravity Theory ?

Abstract: Black holes, one of the greatest enigmas of our Universe, are usually quite challenging to decipher. This work is dedicated to observing the changes in the mass of a non-singular black hole with the evolution of the Universe in the generalized Rastall gravity framework when we consider the effects of parameter constraining on it. We examined two recently developed dynamical dark-energy models~:~Chaudhary-Bouali-Debnath-Roy-Mustafa-type parameterization~and~Chaudhary-Debnath-Mustafa-Maurya-Atamurotov-type parameterization. Starting with the concept and fundamental equations of the generalized Rastall gravity theory, we have introduced the two models and their equations of state, energy density equations, and the corresponding Hubble parameter equations, respectively. Next, we have constrained the required parameters using the MCMC analysis. Then, we discussed the non-singular black holes from the perspective of generalized Rastall gravity and some of their necessary properties one by one. Finally, we have pursued the goal of our work, analyzing the mass accretion process after considering the parameter constraining effects. In this quest, we obtained the mass equation for both models in terms of the redshift. Abstract: Here, we present the outcomes from the second Large Language Model (LLM) Hackathon for Applications in Materials Science and Chemistry, which engaged participants across global hybrid locations, resulting in 34 team submissions. The submissions spanned seven key application areas and demonstrated the diverse utility of LLMs for applications in (1) molecular and material property prediction; (2) molecular and material design; (3) automation and novel interfaces; (4) scientific communication and education; (5) research data management and automation; (6) hypothesis generation and evaluation; and (7) knowledge extraction and reasoning from scientific literature. Each team submission is presented in a summary table with links to the code and as brief papers in the appendix. Beyond team results, we discuss the hackathon event and its hybrid format, which included physical hubs in Toronto, Montreal, San Francisco, Berlin, Lausanne, and Tokyo, alongside a global online hub to enable local and virtual collaboration. Overall, the event highlighted significant improvements in LLM capabilities since the previous year's hackathon, suggesting continued expansion of LLMs for applications in materials science and chemistry research. Abstract: Diffeomorphic deformable image registration ensures smooth invertible transformations across inspiratory and expiratory chest CT scans. Yet, in practice, deep learning-based diffeomorphic methods struggle to capture large deformations between inspiratory and expiratory volumes, and therefore lack inverse consistency. Existing methods also fail to account for model uncertainty, which can be useful for improving performance. We propose an uncertainty-aware test-time adaptation framework for inverse consistent diffeomorphic lung registration. Our method uses Monte Carlo (MC) dropout to estimate spatial uncertainty that is used to improve model performance. We train and evaluate our method for inspiratory-to-expiratory CT registration on a large cohort of 675 subjects from the COPDGene study, achieving a higher Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) between the lung boundaries (0.966) compared to both VoxelMorph (0.953) and TransMorph (0.953). Our method demonstrates consistent improvements in the inverse registration direction as well with an overall DSC of 0.966, higher than VoxelMorph (0.958) and TransMorph (0.956). 32. Effect of the Lattice-distortion on the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Anisotropy of the CoFeCrGa Spin Gapless Semiconductor: A First Principal Study

Abstract: The impact of uniform lattice strain (with lattice parameter (LP), $a = 5.62$-$5.83$ \r{A}) and tetragonal lattice distortion (with $0.8 \leq c/a \leq1.2$ and $V_0$ volume; resulting LP: $a = 5.38$-$5.92$ \r{A}, $c = 5.33$-$6.45$ \r{A}) on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of CoFeCrGa SGS alloy (optimized LP: $a = 5.72$ \r{A}) has been investigated. The SGS nature of CoFeCrGa remains robust under uniform strain; however, the tetragonal lattice distortion has a detrimental impact on the SGS nature, and even a small distortions lead to metallic nature for CoFeCrGa. Despite this, the tetragonally distorted structures maintain high spin polarization (SP $\geq 60\% $); except for the structure with $c/a = 0.8$, for which SP significantly decreases to $\sim 25\%$. The lattice deformation-induced magnetic anisotropy (MA) is also explored by considering the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and the magnetic shape anisotropy (MSA). Both MCA and MSA eliminate for the Y-I ordered and uniformly strained structures, resulting in a magnetic isotropic nature for them. Conversely, the tetragonally distorted structures with $c/a < 1.0$ and $c/a > 1.0$ exhibit very high in-plane magnetic anisotropy and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, respectively; with magnitudes of $\sim 10^5$-$10^6$ J/m$^3$. For tetragonally deformed structures, MSA contribution to MA is negligible, and thus, MCA dictates the total MA. In summary, the isotropically strained structures show SGS nature, while the tetragonally distorted structures exhibit the high MA along with high SP.

Abstract: While multi-agent systems have been shown to significantly enhance the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) across various tasks and applications, the dense interaction between scaling agents potentially hampers their efficiency and diversity. To address these challenges, we draw inspiration from the sparse mixture-of-agents (SMoE) and propose a sparse mixture-of-agents (SMoA) framework to improve the efficiency and diversity of multi-agent LLMs. Unlike completely connected structures, SMoA introduces novel Response Selection and Early Stopping mechanisms to sparsify information flows among individual LLM agents, striking a balance between performance and efficiency. Additionally, inspired by the expert diversity principle in SMoE frameworks for workload balance between experts, we assign distinct role descriptions to each LLM agent, fostering diverse and divergent thinking. Extensive experiments on reasoning, alignment, and fairness benchmarks demonstrate that SMoA achieves performance comparable to traditional mixture-of-agents approaches but with significantly lower computational costs. Further analysis reveals that SMoA is more stable, has a greater capacity to scale, and offers considerable potential through hyper-parameter optimization. 34. Semi-Symmetric Metric Gravity: A Brief Overview

Abstract: We present a review of the Semi-Symmetric Metric Gravity (SSMG) theory, representing a geometric extension of standard general relativity, based on a connection introduced by Friedmann and Schouten in 1924. The semi-symmetric connection is a connection that generalizes the Levi-Civita one, by allowing for the presence of a simple form of the torsion, described in terms of a torsion vector. The Einstein field equations are postulated to have the same form as in standard general relativity, thus relating the Einstein tensor constructed with the help of the semi-symmetric connection, with the energy-momentum tensor. The inclusion of the torsion contributions in the field equations has intriguing cosmological implications, particularly during the late-time evolution of the Universe. Presumably, these effects also dominate under high-energy conditions, and thus SSMG could potentially address unresolved issues in General Relativity and cosmology, such as the initial singularity, inflation, or the $^7$Li problem of the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis. The explicit presence of torsion in the field equations leads to the non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor, which can be interpreted within the irreversible thermodynamics of open systems, as describing particle creation processes. 35. Macroscopic quantum teleportation with ensembles of qubits

Abstract: We develop methods for performing quantum teleportation of the total spin variables of an unknown state, using quantum nondemolition measurements, spin projection measurements, and classical communication. While theoretically teleportation of high-dimensional states can be attained with the assumption of generalized Bell measurements, this is typically experimentally non-trivial to implement. We introduce two protocols and show that, on average, the teleportation succeeds in teleporting the spin variables of a spin coherent state with average zero angular error in the ideal case, beating classical strategies based on quantum state estimation. In a single run of the teleportation, there is an angular error at the level of ~ 0.1 radians for large ensembles. A potential physical implementation for the scheme is with atomic ensembles and quantum nondemolition measurements performed with light. Here, the intricate process involved in the generation and conversion of spin and orbital to charge currents in Zr(t=2, 3, 4.5, 6, &10nm)/Co60Fe20B20(CFB), Zr/Pt/CFB, and Zr/Pt/CFB/Pt heterostructures are investigated using spin-orbital pumping ferromagnetic resonance and longitudinal spin-orbital Seebeck effect measurements. The moderate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the CFB layer facilitates the simultaneous generation of spin and orbital currents, which are transferred into adjacent Zr and Pt layers. Different spin-orbital to charge current contributions, namely, Inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE), Inverse orbital Hall effect (IOHE), and Inverse orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect (IOREE) are analyzed. Notably, introducing a single Pt layer increases the spin-orbital to charge current conversion via combined effects: ISHE in Pt, IOREE in Zr/Pt interface. An enhanced effective spin-orbital Hall angle ({\theta}_eff) of 0.120 {\pm} 0.004 is observed for Zr/Pt/CFB, compared to that of 0.065 {\pm} 0.002 for the Zr/CFB, and 0.077 {\pm} 0.003 for the Zr/Pt/CFB/Pt heterostructures. Abstract: Current quantum devices face challenges when dealing with large circuits due to error rates as circuit size and the number of qubits increase. The circuit wire-cutting technique addresses this issue by breaking down a large circuit into smaller, more manageable subcircuits. However, the exponential increase in the number of subcircuits and the complexity of reconstruction as more cuts are made poses a great practical challenge. Inspired by ancilla-assisted quantum process tomography and the MUBs-based grouping technique for simultaneous measurement, we propose a new approach that can reduce subcircuit running overhead. The approach first uses ancillary qubits to transform all quantum input initializations into quantum output measurements. These output measurements are then organized into commuting groups for the purpose of simultaneous measurement, based on MUBs-based grouping. This approach significantly reduces the number of necessary subcircuits as well as the total number of shots. Abstract: In this paper, we investigate inaccuracy measures based on record values, focusing on the relationship between the distribution of the n-th upper and lower k-record values and the parent distribution. We extend the classical Kerridge inaccuracy measure, originally developed for comparing two distributions, to record values and derive expressions for both upper and lower record values. In addition, we explore various other inaccuracybased measures, such as cumulative residual inaccuracy, cumulative past inaccuracy, and extropy inaccuracy measures, and their applications in characterizing symmetric distributions. We compute these measures through illustrative examples for several well-known lifetime distributions, including the exponential, Pareto, and Weibull distributions. Our findings provide insights into how inaccuracy varies with record order and distribution parameters, contributing to a deeper understanding of information-theoretic measures applied to records.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 43. AgentOccam: A Simple Yet Strong Baseline for LLM-Based Web Agents

Abstract: Autonomy via agents using large language models (LLMs) for personalized, standardized tasks boosts human efficiency. Automating web tasks (like booking hotels within a budget) is increasingly sought after. Fulfilling practical needs, the web agent also serves as an important proof-of-concept example for various agent grounding scenarios, with its success promising advancements in many future applications. Prior research often handcrafts web agent strategies (e.g., prompting templates, multi-agent systems, search methods, etc.) and the corresponding in-context examples, which may not generalize well across all real-world scenarios. On the other hand, there has been limited study on the misalignment between a web agent's observation/action representation and the pre-training data of the LLM it's based on. This discrepancy is especially notable when LLMs are primarily trained for language completion rather than tasks involving embodied navigation actions and symbolic web elements. Our study enhances an LLM-based web agent by simply refining its observation and action space to better align with the LLM's capabilities. This approach enables our base agent to significantly outperform previous methods on a wide variety of web tasks. Specifically, on WebArena, a benchmark featuring general-purpose web interaction tasks, our agent AgentOccam surpasses the previous state-of-the-art and concurrent work by 9.8 (+29.4%) and 5.9 (+15.8%) absolute points respectively, and boosts the success rate by 26.6 points (+161%) over similar plain web agents with its observation and action space alignment. We achieve this without using in-context examples, new agent roles, online feedback or search strategies. AgentOccam's simple design highlights LLMs' impressive zero-shot performance on web tasks, and underlines the critical role of carefully tuning observation and action spaces for LLM-based agents.

44. POROver: Improving Safety and Reducing Overrefusal in Large Language Models with Overgeneration and Preference Optimization

Abstract: Balancing safety and usefulness in large language models has become a critical challenge in recent years. Models often exhibit unsafe behavior or adopt an overly cautious approach, leading to frequent overrefusal of benign prompts, which reduces their usefulness. Addressing these issues requires methods that maintain safety while avoiding overrefusal. In this work, we examine how the overgeneration of training data using advanced teacher models (e.g., GPT-4o), including responses to both general-purpose and toxic prompts, influences the safety and overrefusal balance of instruction-following language models. Additionally, we present POROver, a strategy to use preference optimization methods in order to reduce overrefusal, via employing a superior teacher model's completions. Our results show that overgenerating completions for general-purpose prompts significantly improves the balance between safety and usefulness. Specifically, the F1 score calculated between safety and usefulness increases from 70.8% to 88.3%. Moreover, overgeneration for toxic prompts substantially reduces overrefusal, decreasing it from 94.4% to 45.2%. Furthermore, preference optimization algorithms, when applied with carefully curated preference data, can effectively reduce a model's overrefusal from 45.2% to 15.0% while maintaining comparable safety levels. Abstract: Pressure-induced emission enhancement and bandgap narrowing in vacancy-ordered halide double perovskite $Cs_2TeBr_6$ are extensively investigated through photoluminescence and absorption experiments. The below bandgap broad emission is attributed to self-trapped excitons recombination. The $Cs_2TeBr_6$ crystal, consisting of undistorted octahedra, exhibits substantial emission enhancement due to the lowering of the energy barrier between $^3P_1$ and self-trapped exciton states, as well as the suppression of nonradiative energy loss with increasing pressure. In the Raman measurements, the observed behavior of full width at half maximum of all Raman modes implies dominant electron-phonon interactions rather than anharmonic interactions between phonons. The pressure-dependent X-ray diffraction measurements reveal an anomalous behaviour in the normalized pressure as a function of the Eulerian strain.

46. Scaling Laws for Multilingual Language Models

Abstract: We propose a novel scaling law for general-purpose decoder-only language models (LMs) trained on multilingual data, tackling the problem of balancing languages during multilingual pretraining. A primary challenge in studying multilingual scaling is the difficulty of analyzing individual language performance due to cross-lingual transfer. To address this, we shift the focus from individual languages to language families. We introduce and validate a hypothesis that the test cross-entropy loss for each language family is determined solely by its own sampling ratio, independent of other languages in the mixture. This insight simplifies the complexity of multilingual scaling and make the analysis scalable to an arbitrary number of languages. Building on this hypothesis, we derive a power-law relationship that links performance with dataset size, model size and sampling ratios. This relationship enables us to predict performance across various combinations of the above three quantities, and derive the optimal sampling ratios at different model scales. To demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of our proposed scaling law, we perform a large-scale empirical study, training more than 100 models on 23 languages spanning 5 language families. Our experiments show that the optimal sampling ratios derived from small models (85M parameters) generalize effectively to models that are several orders of magnitude larger (1.2B parameters), offering a resource-efficient approach for multilingual LM training at scale.

47. What to expect: kilonova light curve predictions via equation of state marginalization

Abstract: Efficient multi-messenger observations of gravitational-wave candidates from compact binary coalescence candidate events rely on data products reported in low-latency by the International Gravitational-wave Network (IGWN). While data products such as $\texttt{HasNS}$, the probability of at least one neutron star, and $\texttt{HasRemnant}$, the probability of remnant matter forming after merger, exist, these are not direct observables for a potential kilonova. Here, we present new kilonova light curve and ejecta mass data products derived from merger quantities measured in low latency, by marginalizing over our uncertainty in our understanding of the neutron star equation of state and using measurements of the source properties of the merger, including masses and spins. Two additional types of data products are proposed. The first is the probability of a candidate event having mass ejecta ($m_{\mathrm{ej}}$) greater than $10^{-3} M_\odot$, which we denote as $\texttt{HasEjecta}$. The second are $m_{\mathrm{ej}}$ estimates and accompanying $\texttt{ugrizy}$ and $\texttt{HJK}$ kilonova light curves predictions produced from a surrogate model trained on a grid of kilonova light curves from $\texttt{POSSIS}$, a time-dependent, three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. We are developing these data products in the context of the IGWN low-latency alert infrastructure, and will be advocating for their use and release for future detections.

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 49. Salient Store: Enabling Smart Storage for Continuous Learning Edge Servers

Abstract: As continuous learning based video analytics continue to evolve, the role of efficient edge servers in efficiently managing vast and dynamic datasets is becoming increasingly crucial. Unlike their compute architecture, storage and archival system for these edge servers has often been under-emphasized. This is unfortunate as they contribute significantly to the data management and data movement, especially in a emerging complute landscape where date storage and data protection has become one of the key concerns. To mitigate this, we propose Salient Store that specifically focuses on the integration of Computational Storage Devices (CSDs) into edge servers to enhance data processing and management, particularly in continuous learning scenarios, prevalent in fields such as autonomous driving and urban mobility. Our research, gos beyond the compute domain, and identifies the gaps in current storage system designs. We proposes a framework that aligns more closely with the growing data demands. We present a detailed analysis of data movement challenges within the archival workflows and demonstrate how the strategic integration of CSDs can significantly optimize data compression, encryption, as well as other data management tasks, to improve overall system performance. By leveraging the parallel processing capabilities of FPGAs and the high internal bandwidth of SSDs, Salient Store reduces the communication latency and data volume by ~6.2x and ~6.1x, respectively. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the potential of CSDs to revolutionize storage, making them not just data repositories but active participants in the computational process.

50. Taylor Unswift: Secured Weight Release for Large Language Models via Taylor Expansion

Abstract: Ensuring the security of released large language models (LLMs) poses a significant dilemma, as existing mechanisms either compromise ownership rights or raise data privacy concerns. To address this dilemma, we introduce TaylorMLP to protect the ownership of released LLMs and prevent their abuse. Specifically, TaylorMLP preserves the ownership of LLMs by transforming the weights of LLMs into parameters of Taylor-series. Instead of releasing the original weights, developers can release the Taylor-series parameters with users, thereby ensuring the security of LLMs. Moreover, TaylorMLP can prevent abuse of LLMs by adjusting the generation speed. It can induce low-speed token generation for the protected LLMs by increasing the terms in the Taylor-series. This intentional delay helps LLM developers prevent potential large-scale unauthorized uses of their models. Empirical experiments across five datasets and three LLM architectures demonstrate that TaylorMLP induces over 4x increase in latency, producing the tokens precisely matched with original LLMs. Subsequent defensive experiments further confirm that TaylorMLP effectively prevents users from reconstructing the weight values based on downstream datasets.
