1. Terrestrial and Underwater Pollution-source Detection Using Electromagnetic Multisensory Robotic System

Abstract: Terrestrial and underwater pollution sources present a serious problem affecting human health, biodiversity, tourism, fishery, and other environmental issues. There is often little consistent information of wastes available particularly due to lack of efficient technical tools. The main objective of this paper is to study the potential use of high-resolution electromagnetic (EM) sensors to detect waste that can pollute the environment ashore and underwater. Since different environmental conditions demand different sensor types, we propose a multisensory system composed of various non-destructive EM sensors at different frequencies. Low frequency sensors in the kHz region are based on electromagnetic induction (EMI) approach, whereas high frequency sensors in the MHz and GHz regions are based on ground penetrating radar (GPR). We tested components of the designed multisensory system on remotely operated vehicle and found that it has the capacity to discover, map and interpret waste from various materials in different environmental conditions with the option of the objects’ size and shape reconstruction as well as waste classification. The results of this study offer new possibilities to improve the understanding of the current status of the terrestrial and underwater waste pollution problem.

Abstract: Statins are the cornerstone treatment for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia but research suggests it could increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in the general population. A low prevalence of type 2 diabetes was reported in some familial hypercholesterolaemia cohorts, raising the question of whether these patients are protected against type 2 diabetes. Obesity is a well known risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. We aimed to investigate the associations of known key determinants of type 2 diabetes with its prevalence in people with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.

3. EPR study of nano-structured graphite

Abstract: We report on a systematic temperature dependent X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of nano-sized graphite particles prepared by ball-milling. In as-prepared samples a very intense and sharp EPR resonance at $g=2.0035$ has been measured. The EPR linewidth shows a Korringa-like linear temperature dependence arising due to the coexistence and strong exchange coupling of itinerant and localized edge states. With a prolonged aging in inert atmosphere changes in the EPR signal suggest gradual structural reconstruction where the localized edge-states dominate the EPR signal. In this case the EPR spin susceptibility shows a maximum at $\approx 23\, {\rm K}$ indicating the development of antiferromagnetic correlations as expected for the graphene lattice with a bipartite symmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; accepted in Phys. Abstract: Electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments were performed with antiferromagnetic MnO confined within a porous vycor-type glass and within MCM-type channel matrices. A signal from confined MnO shows two components from crystallized and amorphous MnO and depends on the pore topology. Crystallized MnO within a porous glass shows a behavior having many similarities to the bulk. In contrast with the bulk the strong ESR signal due to disordered "surface" spins is observed below the magnetic transition. With the decrease of channel diameter the fraction of amorphous MnO increases while the amount of crystallized MnO decreases. The mutual influence of amorphous and crystalline MnO is observed in the matrices with a larger channel diameter. In the matrices with a smaller channel diameter the ESR signal mainly originates from amorphous MnO and its behavior is typical for the highly disordered magnetic system., Comment: 7 pages pdf file, 5 figures

Abstract: Clinical procedures, such as acid etching and reshaping of the teeth supporting removable partial dentures by grinding off some enamel surface, increase the permeability of dental enamel. Teeth take several months in vivo to partially recover from such damage. In the meantime, the tooth is more susceptible to carious decay. To prevent this the ground or etched enamel should be effectively protected. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and a two-chamber diffusion cell the authors studied the influence of adhesive resin applied to the ground and acid-etched enamel surfaces on the diffusion of spin label TMAPO (2,2,6-6 tetramethyl-4-acetamido-piperidine-1-oxyl) molecules through the enamel. The enamel permeability was measured in samples exposed to 1-min etching with 37% phosphoric acid, in samples etched for 5 min, and in samples ground with a diamond bur. Next, all the treated enamel surfaces were coated with Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus(R) dental adhesive system and the permeability measurements repeated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the porosity of enamel surfaces. The adhesive resin film covering the etched or ground enamel surfaces was found to decrease significantly the diffusion through dental enamel. This finding confirms the clinical value of dental adhesives used to protect ground or accidentally acid-etched enamel surfaces. SEM analysis showed that adhesive resin covers the porous surface of the acid-etched and ground enamel tightly.

Abstract: The ESR intensity of the alpha' modification of TDAE-C-60 Vanishes below 20 K in contrast to the alpha modification where the ESR intensity tremendously increases due to the ferromagnetic transition. The proton NMR spectra of the alpha' modification show a single temperature independent NMR line close to the Larmor frequency. Both the ESR and the NMR results can be understood by the existence of S = 0 spin pairing in the ground state of the non- ferromagnetic alpha' modification of TDEA-C-60 at low temperatures.

Abstract: The structure and permeability of cementum are changed during the course of periodontal disease. In this study, the transport of water-soluble, spin-labelled molecules through cementum was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Cementum samples cut from different parts of the root were classified into four different groups: (A) samples exposed to the oral environment, (B) samples exposed to the periodontal-pocket environment; (C) samples cut from periodontally involved teeth but not exposed to saliva or periodontal pocket and (D) samples from sound young teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons. In order to obtain undamaged cementum, a dentine layer was left on each sample. Two methods were used to measure the diffusion coefficients of spin-labelled molecules in cementum dentine samples. First, the method of one-dimensional EPR imaging (EPRI) was used to evaluate the penetration of spin-labelled molecules into the cementum/dentine structure. Second, the diaphragm-cell method was used to determine the diffusion coefficients of the labelled molecules through the cementum under steady-state conditions. The results indicate that the interface between cementum and dentine is a barrier to diffusion. A set of diffusion (D) and partition (K) coefficients to describe the molecular transport in cementum, barrier and dentine was generated from the experimental data of both methods. For cementum (c), the barrier (b) and dentine (d) these coefficients were: Dc= 10(-8)cm2/s, Db= 10(-10)cm2/s, Dd= 10(-6)cm2/s and K=0.1. For the particular periodontally involved and uninvolved teeth the value of the rate-limiting barrier was DbA= 0.3 +/- 0.03 x 10(-10)cm2/s, DbB= 1 +/-0.3 x 10(-10)cm2/s, DbC= 0.3 +/- 0.03 x 10(-10)cm2/s, DbD= 0.4 +/- 0.05 x 10(-10)cm2/s. The largest diffusion flux across the dental hard tissue was found in the samples that had been exposed to the pocket environment (3.1 +/- 0.2) x 10(-9)cm2/s (p0.01), which coincided with the permeability calculated from the data evaluated by EPRI. The transport of the labelled molecules into and through the cementum dentine samples depends on the structure of the dental hard tissues, which changes during the course of periodontal disease. Knowledge of molecular diffusion across the tooth cementum/dentine structure is likely to be important for planning new treatments for periodontal disease.

Abstract: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements have been carried out over the frequency range of 1-370 GHz on single crystals of potassium peroxychromate (K3CrO8) with the view of examining the current models of exchange narrowing of EPR signals in solids. K3CrO8 has a simple (tetragonal) lattice structure, can be grown as single crystals pure or diluted with an isostructural diamagnetic host K3NbO8, and its paramagnetism can be described by a very simple (S = 12, I = 0) spin Hamiltonian. The measurements were made at various orientations of single crystals in the Zeeman field, with emphasis on the principal directions of the g-tensor. For essentially all orientations, the linewidth decreases monotonically for measurements at resonance frequencies, omega0, from 1 to about 100 GHz, and then starts to increase at higher omega0. In order to delineate the spin exchange effects from other sources of line broadening, the measurements were repeated with a diluted spin system, K3NbO8 containing approximately/= 0.5 mole % of K3CrO8, representing the broadening effect of all the magnetic field dependent terms, such as the broadening due to the g-strain and sample holder/waveguide magnetization at the high field utilized, up to 14 T. Using these data, the K3CrO8 linewidths were analyzed in terms of the current models of spin exchange narrowing in three-dimensional systems. A reasonably good agreement was found with the Anderson-Weiss model, when modified for various line broadening effects. The accuracy of the analysis procedure was confirmed by the comparison of the presently determined values of the exchange constant, J, and the dipolar field, Hp, with their values obtained by dc magnetic susceptibility measurements and theoretical analysis, respectively; the agreement was within 5% for J (=1.35 K) and about 25% for Hp (160 G). However, some deviations and unusual splittings were noted in measurements at 370 GHz, whose origin remains unclear.

Abstract: Dehydration of porous glass hydrated with a 5 mM solution of the spin-label molecules 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-acetamido-piperidine-1-oxyl (TMAPO) was studied with electron paramagnetic resonance at 9 GHz. The spin-label molecules’ concentration remains constant, i.e., it follows the Langmuir isotherm when glass pores of 292±20 nm diameter are dehydrated. When the pore diameter is only 127±11 nm, or less, the Langmuir isotherm appears not to apply despite the fact that in smaller pores the surface-to-volume ratio is larger. The reason for this apparent failure could be the establishment of a water cluster phase which does not dissolve TMAPO, and/or it could be a kinetic effect of the spin-label molecules. In this report the possibility that the failure of the Langmuir isotherm is the consequence of ordered water clusters is examined. To account for the lower concentration of TMAPO in smallest pores, as much as 70% of total water volume has to consist of such water clusters, in agreement with an earlier proposal.

Abstract: The ESR spectra of a ${\mathrm{TDAE}}^{+}\ensuremath{-}{C}_{60}^{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}}$ single crystal show the existence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations between the unpaired spins on neighboring ${C}_{60}^{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}}$ ions along the c axis and spin canting which leads, below ${T}_{c}$, to weak ferromagnetism along a direction perpendicular to the c axis. This suggests that a Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type mechanism is responsible for ferromagnetic ordering rather than itinerant ferromagnetism. The incomplete orientational ordering of the ${C}_{60}^{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}}$ ions leads to a distribution of exchange coupling constants resulting in spin-glass type behavior which coexists with long range ferromagnetic ordering below ${T}_{c}$. The observation of AFM correlations may help to understand why the same basic molecule ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ can support such different phenomena as ferromagnetism (in TDAE-${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$) and superconductivity (in, e.g., ${\mathrm{K}}_{3}$${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$).

Abstract: After acute coronary syndrome, diabetes conveys an excess risk of ischaemic cardiovascular events. A reduction in mean LDL cholesterol to 1·4–1·8 mmol/L with ezetimibe or statins reduces cardiovascular events in patients with an acute coronary syndrome and diabetes. However, the efficacy and safety of further reduction in LDL cholesterol with an inhibitor of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) after acute coronary syndrome is unknown. We aimed to explore this issue in a prespecified analysis of the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial of the PCSK9 inhibitor alirocumab, assessing its effects on cardiovascular outcomes by baseline glycaemic status, while also assessing its effects on glycaemic measures including risk of new-onset diabetes.

Abstract: The effect of doping with nonmagnetic Zn2+ ions on the spin-Peierls transition in pseudo-one-dimensional CuGeO3 has been studied by ESR intensity and electron spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as functions of temperature. The results show that impurity doping in Cu0.97Zn0.03GeO3 reduces the magnetic energy gap much more than the spin Peierls transition temperature. Our results thus provide experimental support for recent theoretical predictions that a gapless spin-Peierls state may take place in Zn+ doped CuGeO3 at intermediate doping levels in analogy to gapless superconductivity.

27. Nanostructures in n-Octanol Equilibrated with Additives and/or Water

Abstract: Fluid fatty alcohols are believed to be nanostructured but broadly amorphous (i.e., noncrystalline) fluids and solvents, including the most popular fatty tissue mimetic, hydrated n-octanol (i.e., hydro-octanol). To check this premise, we studied dry octanol and hydro-octanol as a model of relatively short fluid n-alkanols with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We also combined this alkanol with the matching alkane (i.e., octane) and with a common anti-inflammatory pain killer (ketoprofen). This revealed that (hydro-)octanol and arguably any other short fatty alcohol form a mesophase. Its basic structural motif are regularly packed polar nanoclusters, reflected in the inner peak in the SAXS diffractogram of (hydro-)octanol and other fluid n-alkanols. The nanoclusters arguably resemble tiny, (inverse) hydrated bilayer fragments, located on a thermally smeared para-crystalline lattice. Additives to hydro-octanol can change the nanoclusters only moderately, if at all. For example, octane and the drug ketoprofen added to hydro-octanol enlarge the nanoclusters only little because of the mixture’s packing frustration. To associate with and to bring more water into hydro-octanol, an additive must hence transform the nanoclusters: it expands them into irregularly distributed aqueous lacunae that form a proto-microemulsion, reflected in the previously unknown Guinier’s SAXS signal. A “weak” (i.e., a weakly polar or nonpolar) additive can moreover create only size-limited lacunae. Coexistence of nanoclusters and lacunae as well as size variability of the latter in hydro-octanol subvert the concept of octanol–water partition coefficient, which relies on the studied compartment homogeneity. In turn, it opens new possibilities for interfacial catalysis. Reinterpreting “octanol–water partition coefficient” data in terms of octanol–water association or binding constant(s) could furthermore diminish the variability of molecular lipophilicity description and pave the ground toward a more precise theoretical quantification and prediction of molecular properties.

Abstract: A pulsed electron spin resonance (ESR) study of tetrakis-dimethylamino-ethylene (TDAE)-C60 has been performed between 30?K and 4.2?K. The temperature dependence of the phase memory time TM has been determined. The ESR line is found to be homogeneously broadened above Tc?=?16?K and inhomogeneously broadened below Tc. The results are compatible with the formation of polarized spin clusters below Tc giving rise to a local field distribution rather than with a classical ferromagnetic ordering.

Abstract: The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of tetrakis-dimethylamino-ethylene (TDAE)-C 60 have been observed in the radiofrequency region and the resonant field - resonance frequency relation has been studied. At T c ≈ 15 K a tremendous increase in intensity and a sudden line broadening occur as well as a shift of the center of the ESR line demonstrating the presence of a magnetic transition. A strong non-zero absorption is seen below T c at zero field supporting the above statement. The values of the local field are however much smaller than expected for the case that all C - 60 spins would order ferromagnetically.

Abstract: The organic magnetic material TDAE-C60 is investigated by magnetic susceptibility, ESR and Raman measurements. We find that, depending on preparation technique, the critical temperature (as determined by ESR) can vary from 16 to 24 K, the latter being the highest Tc reported so far for this compound or any non-polymeric organic material composed entirely of first-row elements. The ESR linewidths in the magnetic state - an indication of the magnitude of the internal field - vary between 15 and 50 Gauss. Rather unexpectedly, Raman spectra of the 16 K material do not show a clear 6 cm-1 shift of the C60 pentagonal pinch mode frequency relative to pure C60 corresponding to transfer of one electron in the ground state. Instead we obtain a sharp line at 1466 cm-1 which would imply only a partial charge transfer from TDAE to C60 i.e. a resonating molecular charge sharing between C60 and TDAE molecules. In contrast, the 24 K sample shows a broad set of lines shifted to lower frequency implying that the higher Tc materials may be non-stoichiometric.

Abstract: The local electronic and structural as well as the macroscopic magnetic properties of K3Cr2Fe3F15 have been studied between room temperature and 4 K. The system has been found to be isostructural with ferroelectric and weakly ferrimagnetic K3Fe5F15 above the ferroelectric transition temperature T-c. The X-band and 216 GHz Cr3+ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra as well as the magnetic susceptibility and Moumlssbauer data show the existence of two magnetic relaxor type transitions around 37 and 17 K. The K-39 magic angle sample spinning NMR, EPR, and the Moumlssbauer data further demonstrate the existence of two nonequivalent Fe, Cr, and K sites in the unit cell as well as the presence of rapid exchange at higher temperatures. The observation of the Fe2+ EPR and Moumlssbauer spectra shows that the Fe2+ ion is in a high spin state.

Abstract: The ESR and NMR lines in powder samples of TDAE- C 60 do not show the expected frequency shifts due to long range ordering in the low temperature magnetic phase, but instead show only a relatively small line broadening below Tc=16 K. The temperature dependence of the lineshapes in ESR, the absence of a spontaneous magnetization as well as other magnetic properties suggest that the magnetic ordering below Tc=16 K is local and random, i.e. spin-glass like, rather than ferromagnetic. The possible finite-particle-size effects and possible microscopic mechanisms for the observed magnetic behavior are discussed.

Such emission is totally absent in flat PZT films or bulk; hence the effect is attributed to the nanoscale geometry of the tubes. The terahertz radiation is emitted within 0.2 ps, and the spectrum exhibits a broad peak from 2 to 8 THz. This is a gap in the frequency spectrum of conventional semiconductor terahertz devices, such as ZnTe, and an order of magnitude higher frequency peak than that in the well-studied p-InAs, due to the abnormally large carrier concentration gradient in the nanostructured PZT. The inferred mechanism is optical rectification within a surface accumulation layer, rather than the Dember effect. The terahertz emission is optically pumped, but since the tubes exhibit ferroelectric switching, electrically driven emission may also be possible. EPR reveals 02 molecules adsorbed onto the nanotubes, which may play some role in the emission.

Abstract: Human dental cementum was analyzed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The measured EPR powder spectra of gamma-irradiated cementum resembled those of gamma-irradiated enamel. Both spectra were characterized by the same line shapes and g values. The position of the extreme first derivate peaks can be described by g1 = 2.0023 and g2 = 1.9971 +/- 0.0002, and are assignable to the CO3(3-) center. The angular dependence of the cementum EPR spectra indicates a different arrangement of the hydroxyapatite microcrystals compared to that of enamel. A corresponding model of cementum microcrystal alignment has been proposed. The methodology presented can be utilized for studying the mineralization process of root cementum and other mineralized tissues.

Abstract: The EPR spectra of Mn 2+ doped K 2 ZnCl 4 show an anomalously large broadening of the Zn site Mn 2+ lines between 152.5 K and 145 K, i.e. just above the transition to the low temperature commensurate phase of A1 a 1 symmetry. The line broadening is related to a distribution of rotations of the ZnCl 4 tetrahedra and supports the existence of a second incommensurate phase in this temperature range as reported by Gesi.

Abstract: At room temperature Li4C60 forms a unique two‐dimensional polymer network where the bonding encounters [2+2] cycloaddition along one direction and a single C–C bond along the perpendicular direction. This structure thus involves both so‐far known bonding motifs and is unique among fullerene structures. The structural and electronic properties of this system were investigated by temperature dependent cw‐ESR. The ESR signal of the polymer phase has an extremely narrow Lorentzian line with a linewidth of about 0.3 G. On heating, the transition from the low‐temperature polymer phase to a metallic monomeric phase occurs above ∼250 °C. The high‐temperature ESR signal has a characteristic Dysonian lineshape.

Abstract: The Ti NMR and the field swept pulsed EPR spectra of bulk powder anatase TiO2 and TiO2 based nanotubes have been found to be radically different. The same is true for the magnetic properties measured by SQUID. Whereas no EPR line could be detected for the TiO2 powder, a rather strong temperature dependent line has been seen for TiO2 based nanotubes. The magnetization versus magnetic field curve of uncompressed TiO2 based nanotubes at 5 K shows the presence of a huge jump‐wise increase in the magnetization at about 4 T, which disappears at 1 T as well as in the compressed sample.

Abstract: TiO2 nanotubes were synthesized via reaction of TiO2 particles and NaOH solution. The average diameter of nanotubes was 15–20 nm and the active surface area increased by a factor of 13 in comparison to TiO2 powder. When a TiO2 nanotube material was exposed to NO2 gas a strong adsorption of gas on the nanotube surface was observed. A strong echo signal was detected in pulsed EPR experiments below 200 K. A field sweep echo experiments revealed two distinct signals: three‐lines at g=2, which are due to NO2 radical, and a broad line with singularities at g= 2.09 and g= 2.49. The origin of the broad signal is at the moment not yet clear. Spin lattice relaxation time measurements demonstrated that at temperatures above 50 K the reorientation dynamics of adsorbed NO2 molecules is thermally activated (Ea= 10 meV) while at low temperatures the molecules become nearly static on the EPR time scale. Upon extended heating at 60 °C in air the NO2 EPR signal almost completely disappeared.

Abstract: Recently synthesized single‐wall MoS2 nanotubes were electrochemically doped with Li and then studied by X‐band electron spin resonance (ESR). We demonstrate, that on average 2.3 mole of Li per MoS2 unit can be intercalated into the bundles of MoS2 nanotubes. The ESR results show that most of the Li is intercalated into the channels between the individual nanotubes. The electronic properties of charged MoS2 nanotubes are largely determined by the defects, either by paramagnetic or topological. We found also evidence for the presence of small Li metallic particles in our sample.

Abstract: The magnetic properties of two different modifications of TDAE-C60 have been studied with the ESR and 1H NMR. Well-annealed single crystals display a transition to a ferromagnetically ordered state as confirmed by the observation of the ferromagnetic resonance. On the other hand the magnetic ground state of the non-ferromagnetic modification is consistent with the singlet ground state. The gap between the singlet and low laying triplet excited state opens below 11 K and reaches about 15 K at 5 K. A possible structural differences and their impact on the observed magnetic properties of the two modifications are discussed.

Abstract: Frequency variable ESR measurements have been performed on well annealed TDAE-C60 single crystals between 40 MHz and 245 GHz. A non-linear variation of the electron resonance frequency with the magnetic field has been observed below TC=16 K in the radio-frequency region. The observed ferromagnetic resonance data are characteristic for a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet with a small positive uniaxial anisotropy field. The easy axis coincides with the crystal c-direction which is the direction of closest approach of the C60− ions.

44. Determination of curing time in visible-light-cured composite resins of different thickness by electron paramagnetic resonance

Abstract: The irradiation time of a visible-light-activated composite necessary to achieve full polymerization throughout the material was studied. Curing-time dependence on the thickness of the material was also investigated. To monitor the visible light-activation effect, the free radical concentration was measured as a function of irradiation time. If the composite sample is less than 0.5 mm thick and exposed to light for a time interval recommended by the manufacturer, full radical concentration is indeed created uniformly. This is not the case in thicker samples. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to monitor the concentration of free radicals in the samples. The number of radicals was monitored as a function of irradiation time during which the radicals were generated in samples 0.5, 0.8, 2.0, 3.0 and 5.0 mm thick. An EPR X-band spectro-meter was used to detect the free radical spectra. The number of free radicals per unit mass as a function of irradiation time shows that 60% of the maximum concentration of radicals in a 1 mm sample is reached in 24 s curing time, while in thicker samples it takes hundreds of seconds. On the basis of the experiments, a depth and irradiation time-dependent radical concentration model was developed. This model shows that a 2.0 mm thick sample is cured at the bottom side if irradiated for 60 s. It is proposed that the measure of the degree of polymerization in composite materials should be the polymerization of the bottom layer of the sample which is modelled from the number of free radicals generated in the sample.

Abstract: The zero-field muon spin relaxation technique has been used in the direct observation of spontaneous magnetic order below a Curie temperature (T(c)) of approximately 16.1 kelvin in the fullerene charge-transfer salt (tetrakisdimethylaminoethylene)C(60) [(TDAE)C(60)]. Coherent ordering of the electronic magnetic moments leads to a local field of 68(1) gauss at the muon site at 3.2 kelvin (parentheses indicate the error in the last digit). Substantial spatially inhomogeneous effects are manifested in the distribution of the local fields, whose width amounts to 48(2) gauss at the same temperature. The temperature evolution of the internal magnetic field below the freezing temperature mirrors that of the saturation magnetization, closely following the behavior expected for collective spin wave (magnon) excitations. The transition to a ferromagnetic state with a T(c) higher than that of any other organic material is now authenticated.

Abstract: The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of K3Cu3Fe2F15 consist above 85 K of a superposition of two Lorentzians with different intensities, T-dependences, linewidths, and g-factors. The broad line shows an antiferromagnetic (AFM) behavior and the narrow one shows a paramagneticlike behavior. The Mossbauer spectra consist at room temperature of two quadrupolar doublets and below 77 K of two magnetic sextets and one quadrupolar doublet. Below 85 K the broad line EPR disappears and the intensity of the narrow line increases nearly exponentially with decreasing temperature. The broad EPR line originates from regions with local AFM order, whereas the narrow line comes from regions without AFM order, e.g., grain boundaries.

Abstract: Here, we report on the observation of a weak ferromagnetic transition at TN=122K in a K3Fe5F15 system which is ferroelectric and ferroelastic below Tc=490K. The magnetization and the susceptibility continuously increase with decreasing T down to 2K. The Mossbauer spectra show a spontaneous magnetic ordering and at least three sites corresponding to Fe2+ and Fe3+. The ratio between Fe2+ and Fe3+ is 60:40. At 6K, there are two magnetically ordered sextets with internal fields of 585 and 263kOe. The “slim” hysteresis loops observed are as well characteristic of weak ferromagnetism. At 122K and at low frequencies, the system shows dielectric anomaly characteristic of magnetoelectric behavior.

Abstract: To check on the nature of the weak magnetic order in polycrystalline magnetoelectric Pb(Fe1∕2Nb1∕2)O3 the X-band, Q-band, and far infrared electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra have been measured between 4 and 600K and compared with magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data. The asymmetric line shapes can be simulated at higher temperature by thermally fluctuating superparamagnetic nanoclusters. The pronounced temperature dependence of the position of the spectra demonstrates the presence of an internal magnetic field which is small but nonzero even at room temperature, i.e., far above the antiferromagnetic transition. The electronic spin-spin exchange has been found to be in the terahertz range. The magnetization data reveal a weak ferromagnetism even above 300K and a break in the temperature dependence of susceptibility at the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition.

50. Local Coordination and Valence States of Cobalt in Sodium Titanate Nanoribbons

Abstract: Co2+-doped sodium titanate nanoribbons were grown under hydrothermal conditions from Co2+-doped TiO2and NaOH(aq) at 175 °C. The obtained nanoribbons, with diameters of 30–150 nm and length up to several micrometers, were determined to have a trititanate structure ((Na,H)2Ti3O7). Transmission electron microscopy revealed nanoparticles, not exceeding 15–20 nm in length, as well as hexagonal nanoflakes located on the surface of the nanoribbons. These nanoflakes are most likely originating from a β-Co(OH)2side-product, according to the X-ray diffraction investigation. High angle annular dark filed scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy showed that the amount of cobalt in the surface nanoparticles is much higher than that in the nanoribbons. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that atomic concentration of cobalt in the sample is 1.5 wt %, of which a small amount is in the oxidation state 3+. A detailed electron paramagnetic resonance characterization of this sample proved that Co2+ions occupy octahedral sites with rhombic distortion in a high-spin S= 3/2 state. Temperature-dependent susceptibility measurement revealed the prevailing paramagnetic behavior from which a mass ratio 1.3 wt % of Co2+was obtained and which is in agreement with the elemental analysis results and the value extracted from the XPS measurements. A weak antiferromagnetic transition at 12 K is associated with β-Co(OH)2nanoflakes.
