1. Highly Efficient Semi-Continuous Extraction and In-Line Purification of High β-O-4 Butanosolv Lignin

Abstract

Innovative biomass fractionation is of major importance for economically competitive biorefineries. Lignin is currently severely underutilized due to the use of high severity fractionation methodologies that yield complex condensed lignin that limits high-value applicability. Mild lignin fractionation conditions can lead to lignin with a more regular C-O bonded structure that has increased potential for higher value applications. Nevertheless, such extraction methodologies typically suffer from inadequate lignin extraction efficiencies and yield. (Semi)-continuous flow extractions are a promising method to achieve improved extraction efficiency of such C-O linked lignin. Here we show that optimized organosolv extraction in a flow-through setup resulted in 93–96% delignification of 40 g walnut shells (40 wt% lignin content) by applying mild organosolv extraction conditions with a 2 g/min flowrate of a 9:1 n-butanol/water mixture with 0.18 M H2SO4 at 120°C in 2.5 h. 85 wt% of the lignin (corrected for alcohol incorporation, moisture content and carbohydrate impurities) was isolated as a powder with a high retention of the β-aryl ether (β-O-4) content of 63 linking motifs per 100 C9 units. Close examination of the isolated lignin showed that the main carbohydrate contamination in the recovered lignin was butyl-xyloside and other butoxylate carbohydrates. The work-up and purification procedure were investigated and improved by the implementation of a caustic soda treatment step and phase separation with a continuous integrated mixer/separator (CINC). This led to a combined 75 wt% yield of the lignin in 3 separate fractions with 3% carbohydrate impurities and a very high β-O-4 content of 67 linking motifs per 100 C9 units. Analysis of all the mass flows showed that 98% of the carbohydrate content was removed with the inline purification step, which is a significant improvement to the 88% carbohydrate removal for the traditional lignin precipitation work-up procedure. Overall we show a convenient method for inline extraction and purification to obtain high β-O-4 butanosolv lignin in excellent yields.

Abstract

The characterization of a broadband fluctuation that is typical for the type-II ELM regime at ASDEX Upgrade has been improved using the 2D capabilities of ECE-imaging. During the transition from the type-I to type-II ELMy phase, it has been found that electron temperature fluctuations form a broadband peak in the 19–65 kHz range. In the type-II phase, this broadband fluctuation reaches a maximum relative amplitude of almost 20% just inside the top of the pedestal. Simultaneously, the electron temperature profile is completely flattened at this location. The 2D distribution of the amplitude of this broadband fluctuation is such that, when averaged over time, a minimum occurs around the mid-plane. From the measurements of the nearby magnetic pickup coils, a similar broadband fluctuation seems visible in the same frequency range. However, this is peaked at a slightly lower frequency and does not show a similar minimum. From the analysis of the fluctuations on small timescales, the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers are estimated to be m ∼ 100 and n ∼ 21. Furthermore, activity reminiscent of beat waves has been observed, which might partially account for the fluctuation's broadband nature and the seeming velocity variation of single fluctuation passages. Overall, similarities between the characteristics of this broadband fluctuation and various precursors to type-I ELMs suggest that this fluctuation can play an important role in regulating the ELM cycle.

Abstract

The design value for ITER is based on operation at n/n(GW) = 0.85, beta(n) = 1.8 and H98(y, 2) = 1. These values have been routinely achieved in JET in argon seeded ELMy H-mode discharges in different divertor configurations and with different triangularities. Two main scenarios are emerging from the experiments.First, low triangularity (delta(u) = 0.19) in septum configuration. In this case large D-2 fuelling rates lead to confinement degradation towards L-mode. The seeding of Ar during the D-2 fuelling phase gives rise to a density close to the Greenwald value. After the switch-off of the D-2 gas fuelling ('afterpuff ' phase), the confinement recovers to H-mode quality whereas the density stays near the value reached at the end of the main fuelling phase and Z(eff) stays close to or below 2. Acting on the refuelling of Ar and D-2 in the 'afterpuff 'phase allows us to improve the stationarity of the high performance phase while maintaining up to the end of the heating phase the good confinement, density and radiation level.Second, high triangularity (delta(u) = 0.45) in vertical target configuration. In this case large fuelling rates do not lead to strong confinement degradation and the D-2 fuelling is applied continuously throughout the discharge. A radiated power fraction of up to 70%, H98(y, 2) = 0.9 at beta(n) = 2.1 and n = 1.15n(GW)-together with the formation of a radiating mantle and moderate Z(eff)-are achieved in this scenario. Furthermore, there are indications of significantly reduced heat load on the divertor target plates.

Abstract

Recent experiments in the Joint European Torus (JET) have provided evidence of sawtooth stabilization by fast ions arising from deuterium neutral beam injection (NBI). A possible theoretical basis for the interpretation of the observed sawtooth period behaviour is investigated and predictions are compared with experimental results, using a sawtooth period model developed to predict the sawtooth period in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Unlike the case of ion cyclotron resonance heating, a detailed comparison between theory and experiment for NBI has not yet been made. In the model employed in this paper, a beam ion contribution to the internal kink potential energy has been incorporated, using a simple analytical expression valid in the limit of isotropic fast particles. This analytical expression has been found to compare well with detailed calculations performed with a hybrid kinetic/MHD code NOVA-K, using fast particle distribution functions computed with a plasma analysis code TRANSP. The beam ion contribution has been implemented in a transport code PRETOR and a few representative JET discharges have been analysed and modelled. The beam ion term is found to be sufficiently stabilizing to produce simulated sawtooth periods in agreement with the experimental results. Sawtooth periods computed without taking this term into account are much shorter than the measured periods. The model indicates that sawteeth are triggered in these JET discharges by excitation of the internal kink in the semi-collisional ion-kinetic regime: this was found by previous authors to be the sawtooth trigger most likely to be relevant to ITER. The role of beam ions in determining the sawtooth period in JET is thus found to be similar to the predicted role of α-particles in ITER.

Abstract

The newly installed electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic on ASDEX Upgrade provides measurements of the 2D electron temperature dynamics with high spatial and temporal resolution. An overview of the technical and experimental properties of the system is presented. These properties are illustrated by the measurements of the edge localized mode and the reversed shear Alfven eigenmode, showing both the advantage of having a two-dimensional (2D) measurement, as well as some of the limitations of electron cyclotron emission measurements. Abstract

Part of 15th International Conference on Laser Aided Plasma Diagnostics (15thLAPD). A new Thomson scattering diagnostic is proposed for the study of fast plasma dynamics in the pedestal of ASDEX Upgrade. The diagnostic will measure electron temperature and density profiles over a ~ 3 cm wide area in the edge transport barrier region, with ~ 1–2 mm spatial resolution and ~ 10 kHz sampling rate. A challenging goal of the project is the study of the bootstrap current in the plasma pedestal by measuring the distortion and shift of the electron distribution along the toroidal direction. Expected spatial and time resolutions of the current density measurements are ~ 3 mm and ~ 1 ms correspondingly. The new diagnostic will be used to study the fast dynamic behaviour of the pedestal bootstrap current, where models indicate that it plays a key role in regulating edge stability, e.g. during ELMs. The diagnostic design is based on the intra-cavity multi-pass system currently in operation in TEXTOR, which uses a probing ruby laser, a grating spectrometer and two fast CMOS cameras for scattered light detection, and has achieved measuring accuracies of the order of ~ 1% for ne and ~ 2% for Te. Parts of that system will be reused in ASDEX Upgrade (some with significant modifications), but the laser multi-pass and light collection systems are entirely redesigned. Restrictions in space and line-of-sight availability have led to the adoption of a design which uses in-vessel multi-pass mirrors and light collection optics, requiring a number of innovative technical solutions to permit remote laser alignment and light collection. We give an overview of the project, discuss the underlying physics basis and present a number of technical solutions employed.

7. Sewage sludge as a soil amendment, with special reference to Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn— comparison of results from experiments conducted inside and outside a glasshouse

Abstract

Lettuces and onions were grown in pots in a glasshouse, in mini-plots, 1 m × 1 m, outside that glasshouse and in a market garden on the same soil amended with 0, 1, 3 and 9 t ha−1 dried sewage sludge from a treatment plant that serves the semi-industrial northern part of Adelaide, South Australia. Edible parts of lettuce tops and onion bulbs were analysed for Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. The sludge applications brought about a sharp increase for most of the metals in the plant material from the glasshouse, whereas there was generally little increase in the concentrations in the field plants. Results of the mini-plots were in line with those of the field. The experiment has shown that the glasshouse experiments, even with pots containing 16 kg dry soil, can give completely erroneous indications of the probable uptake of heavy metals by vegetables on sludge-treated soils under field conditions. Some of the implications of the uses of sewage sludge on farmland and in commercial glasshouses are discussed.

Abstract

To evaluate twenty sludges from different places in Australia for disposal on arable land, these sludges were extracted with (a) HNO3 to determine the ‘total’ contents of some heavy metals and other elements; (b) a solution containing DTPA to determine contents of ‘available’ heavy metals; and (c) with a CaCl2-solution to determine contents of water-soluble heavy metals and some other elements. Measurements of the pH of the sludges, their electrolytic conductivity, NaHCO3-extractable P, water-extractable Cl, and contents of ash and organic carbon were also made. The HNO3-extractable Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the sludges were compared with those in sludges from three other countries. High correlations between HNO3-extractable and DTPA-extractable metals were found in the Australian sludges; therefore, the HNO3 is equally good as the DTPA as an extractant of heavy metals in sewage sludges. The correlations between HNO3- and CaCl2-extractable Cd, Cu, Mn, and Zn were not significant. ‘Young’ and ‘aged’ sludges from the same treatment plants consistently differed in their Na and Cl contents, which were lower in the ‘aged’ sludges. A wheat experiment treated with high application rates of a saline and metalliferous sludge showed that the balance of nutrients and the amount of soluble salts in a sewage sludge are of greater direct importance to the growth of plants than the heavy metal content of that sludge.

Summary Granulated sludge from a treatment plant near Adelaide, South Australia, was tested for its fertiliser value in three plantations of Pinus radiata on infertile soils. Over a period of two years, sludge treatments depressed tree growth on one of the sites, gave a small but significant response on the second, and no significant response on the third. The sludge is not recommended as a fertiliser in pine plantations.

Abstract

Some difficulties were met when low levels of Cd and Pb were estimated in plant samples in this laboratory by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). A modified procedure, based on methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) extraction of the metal complexes with ammonium pyrollidine dithio carbamate (APDC), has been developed for use on samples digested with HNO3/HCIO4. The procedure was compared with X‐ray fluorescence and with other AAS methods including those based on dry ashing. Dry ashing gave generally lower values for Cd and Pb. Improvement in conditions of digestion and analysis are described. Of these, the presence of small amounts of Fe in standards and unknown samples increases the stability and reproducibility of absorbance values, especially for cadmium.

Abstract

Results of pot experiments depend much on the environmental conditions under which they are conducted and on “personal factors”; such as the choice of the type of pots, rates of fertilisers applied, the way these fertilisers are applied, growing conditions in the glasshouse, and the decision when to terminate the experiment. The majority of pot experiments are conducted under environmental conditions which seldom or never occur in the field. We therefore cannot extrapolate their results to the field unless the experiments deal with growing factors which dominate all others.

Abstract

Wheat grown in contaminated soils adjacent to a lead-zinc smelter contained higher concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium than wheat grown on uncontaminated soils. The distribution of crop contamination closely corresponded to the distribution of contaminated soils. Heavy metal concentrations in grain did not arise by surface contamination even at sites closest to the smelter. In grain grown on polluted soils, the heavy metal concentrations did not exceed prescribed health standards, and should not present any risk to human health.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract

The new full-metal ITER-like wall at JET was found to have a deep impact on the physics of disruptions at JET. In order to develop disruption classification, the 10D operational space of JET with the new ITER-like wall has been explored using the generative topographic mapping method. The 2D map has been exploited to develop an automatic disruption classification of several disruption classes manually identified. In particular, all the non-intentional disruptions have been considered, that occurred in JET from 2011 to 2013 with the new wall. A statistical analysis of the plasma parameters describing the operational spaces of JET with carbon wall and JET ITER-like wall has been performed and some physical considerations have been made on the difference between these two operational spaces and the disruption classes which can be identified. The performance of the JET- ITER-like wall classifier is tested in real-time in conjunction with a disruption predictor presently operating at JET with good results. Moreover, to validate and analyse the results, another reference classifier has been developed, based on the k-nearest neighbour technique. Finally, in order to verify the reliability of the performed classification, a conformal predictor based on non-conformity measures has been developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recent studies dedicated to the characterisation of in-vessel dust in JET with the new ITER-like wall (ILW) show that dust levels are orders of magnitude lower compared with the latter stages of the carbon-wall (CW) period and are decreasing with operational time. Less than 1 g of dust was recovered in a recent inspection, compared with more than 200 g of material recovered at the end of the JET-CW life. Recent inspection of the ILW shows low rates of re-deposition with only small areas of damage of a type likely to create particulate matter. Quantifiers from laser scattering techniques also indicate an order of magnitude reduction in dust relative to the JET-CW and show that the amount of dust mobilized after a disruption is proportional to the dynamic vessel forces. It is not possible to infer what fraction of dust (if any) might be created by disruptions. However, disruption mitigation is found to reduce the amount of dust seen after moderate disruptions by a factor of 4. Analysis of the transient impurity events (TIEs) associated with dust show that tungsten dominates. A significant contribution to TIEs is also seen from iron, nickel and chromium (probably from steel and Inconel components). The incidence of severe negative effects on operations from TIEs is found to be relatively rare, with <1% of ILW disruptions linked to TIEs. The evolution of the TIE rate closely follows changes in the laser scattering dust quantifiers; both trend downwards in time but peak during periods of higher disruption rate (thought to be primarily driven by the mobilization of existing dust). 17. Laparoscopic Versus Open Cholecystectomy: A Prospective Matched-Cohort Study

Abstract

To compare the results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and open cholecystectomy (OC) for symptomatic cholelithiasis in elective surgery we performed a prospective matched-cohort study. Hundred consecutive patients who underwent LC in the period Sept. 1990-June 1992, and 100 patients who were age and sex matched and underwent an elective OC in the foregoing two years (1989-1990) were studied. The median operation time for LC (75, 40-180 min) was significantly longer than for OC (55, 20-155 min; p < 0.001). Postoperative hospitalization was significantly shorter after LC (3, 1-16 days), compared with OC (7, 4-22 days; p<0.001). Conversion of LC to OC occurred in 12 (12%) patients initially scheduled to undergo LC. Complications occurred in 5 patients (5%) after LC and in 5 patients (5%) after OC. The calculated expenses (operation and postoperative hospitalization, 3rd class) were approximately fl. 3740,- for LC (excl. investments for pieces of apparatus) and fl. 6725,- for OC. This study demonstrates that LC can be performed safely with the number of complications comparable to those for OC. Bile duct injury is a serious potential threat. The main advantages ofLC are the minimal trauma, with more rapid recovery. Insurers seem to benefit from reduced postoperative disability and earlier discharge.

Abstract

Experiments and modelling have been carried out to optimize the magnetic field null during breakdown at JET. Such optimization may prove to be essential for reliable plasma initiation at low voltages, e.g. in ITER where the value of the electric field available will be limited to 0.33 V m−1. A two-dimensional FEM electromagnetic model has been employed to predict the stray field configuration during JET breakdown. This model includes the active poloidal field circuits, a description of the passive structure and the JET magnetic circuit. In particular, the model includes the gap at the top of the iron circuit (but not at the bottom), which introduces a perturbing field, with radial and vertical components, not previously considered. A number of experiments were run using the optimized magnetic null configuration, allowing one to achieve a more robust breakdown at a low electric field. The model calculation to adjust the magnetic null position was validated using the recordings from a fast visible camera. The optimized position and dynamics of the plasma start lead to a smoother behaviour of the JET radial field control system, far from the amplifier limits. Finally, an important indication was obtained on the precision needed for the active current measurements during the low electric field breakdown relevant from the perspective of the ITER real-time acquisition system.
