1. Impacts of elevated anthropogenic emissions on physicochemical characteristics of black-carbon-containing particles over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: Black carbon (BC) in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) region has distinct climate effects that strongly depend on its mixing state. The aging processes of BC in the TP are subject to emissions from various regions, resulting in considerable variability of its mixing state and physicochemical properties. However, the mechanism and magnitude of this effect are not yet clear. In this study, field observations on physicochemical properties of BC-containing particles (PMBC) were conducted in the northeast (Xihai) and southeast (Lulang) regions of the TP to investigate the impacts of transported emissions from lower-altitude areas on BC characteristics in the TP. Large spatial discrepancies were found in the chemical composition of PMBC. Both sites showed higher concentrations of PMBC when they were affected by transported air masses outside the TP but with diverse chemical composition. Source apportionment for organic aerosol (OA) suggested that primary OA in the northeastern TP was attributed to hydrocarbon OA (HOA) from anthropogenic emissions, while it was dominated by biomass burning OA (BBOA) in the southeastern TP. Regarding secondary aerosol, a marked enhancement in nitrate fraction was observed on aged BC coating in Xihai when the air masses were brought by updrafts and easterly winds from lower-altitude areas. With the development of boundary layer, the enhanced turbulent mixing promoted the elevation of anthropogenic pollutants. In contrast to Xihai, the thickly coated BC in Lulang was mainly caused by elevation and transportation of biomass burning plumes from south Asia, showing a large contribution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The distinct transported emissions lead to substantial variations of both chemical composition and light absorption ability of BC across the TP. The thicker coating and higher mass absorption cross-section (MAC) of PMBC in air masses elevated from lower-altitude regions reveal the promoted BC aging processes and their impacts on the mixing state and light absorption of BC in the TP. These findings emphasize the vulnerability of plateau regions to influences of elevated emissions, leading to significant changes in BC concentration, mixing states and light absorption across the TP, all of which need to be considered in the evaluation of BC radiative effects for the TP region.

2. Hydrodynamic Effects of Mastigonemes in the Cryptophyte Chilomonas paramecium

Abstract: Many swimming protists travel by actuating whip-like flagella to generate thrust. While many organisms’ flagella have been observed to have hair-like protrusions called mastigonemes, the function of these mastigonemes is not known. In particular, however, although theory, numerics, and some experiments suggest that mastigonemes can initiate the reversal in direction of thrust generated relative to the direction of traveling waves propagated along flagella, other experiments have found that they do not have hydrodynamic effects. Thus, it remains unclear whether mastigonemes have a hydrodynamic effect and function; additionally, any hydrodynamic effects may be species-dependent, which calls for the investigation of additional species. In this work, we report experimental observations of the cryptophyte C. paramecium that obtain their cell body, flagellar, and mastigoneme geometries, as well as their swimming kinematics and behavior. We then use the observed geometries and kinematics to numerically simulate swimming trajectories for a particularly well-characterized reorientation event, with and without various configurations of the mastigonemes. The comparison of numerical and experimental results shows that a configuration of mastigonemes in the beating plane best reproduces the observed reorientation dynamics, suggesting that in C. paramecium, although mastigonemes do not lead to gross changes in motility, such as thrust reversal, they do exert important quantitative effects.

3. scHolography: a computational method for single-cell spatial neighborhood reconstruction and analysis

Abstract: Abstract Spatial transcriptomics has transformed our ability to study tissue complexity. However, it remains challenging to accurately dissect tissue organization at single-cell resolution. Here we introduce scHolography, a machine learning-based method designed to reconstruct single-cell spatial neighborhoods and facilitate 3D tissue visualization using spatial and single-cell RNA sequencing data. scHolography employs a high-dimensional transcriptome-to-space projection that infers spatial relationships among cells, defining spatial neighborhoods and enhancing analyses of cell–cell communication. When applied to both human and mouse datasets, scHolography enables quantitative assessments of spatial cell neighborhoods, cell–cell interactions, and tumor-immune microenvironment. Together, scHolography offers a robust computational framework for elucidating 3D tissue organization and analyzing spatial dynamics at the cellular level.

Abstract: We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from s=200 GeV p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios C4/C2, C5/C1, and C6/C2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios C5/C1 and C6/C2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in p+p collisions.

Abstract: We report the first measurements of cumulants, up to 4th order, of deuteron number distributions and proton-deuteron correlations in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in phase-I of Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Deuteron cumulants, their ratios, and proton-deuteron mixed cumulants are presented for different collision centralities covering a range of center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=7.7 to 200 GeV. It is found that the cumulant ratios at lower collision energies favor a canonical ensemble over a grand canonical ensemble in thermal models. An anti-correlation between proton and deuteron multiplicity is observed across all collision energies and centralities, consistent with the expectation from global baryon number conservation. The UrQMD model coupled with a phase-space coalescence mechanism qualitatively reproduces the collision-energy dependence of cumulant ratios and proton-deuteron correlations.

6. Analysis of Flow-induced Noise Characteristics of Ethylene Cracking Furnace Tubes before and after Coking

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of flow-induced noise characteristics in ethylene cracking furnace tubes, covering both pre- and post-coking conditions. Large-eddy simulation (LES) was employed in conjunction with a generalized Lighthill’s acoustic analogy model. The results indicate that noise sources can be classified as dipole acoustic sources, with energy primarily concentrated ranged from 300 to 1500 Hz, in comparison to standard conditions. The primary location of the acoustic source was identified in the region commonly referred to as the “necking” of the furnace tube, demonstrating a strong correlation with turbulence intensity near the tube wall. As the coke layer thickness in the furnace tube increased from 5 mm to 15 mm, both the sound power level and turbulence intensity exhibited significant growth. Specifically, the sound power level increased by 60.5% while the turbulence intensity increased by 58.5%. Variations in the overall sound pressure level (OASPL) curve measured within the tube could be utilized to assess coking levels. Significant peaks in the OASPL curve were observed as the furnace tube underwent substantial coking, with coke layer thicknesses of 10 mm and 15 mm. The corresponding OASPL values recorded were 79.25 dB and 119.08 dB, respectively. The findings of this work offer significant insights that may contribute to enhanced safety measures in the operation of ethylene cracking furnace tubes.

Abstract: The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon that arises from the QCD anomaly in the presence of an external magnetic field. The experimental search for its evidence has been one of the key goals of the physics program of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The STAR Collaboration has previously presented the results of a blind analysis of isobar collisions (_{44}^{96}Ru+_{44}^{96}Ru, _{40}^{96}Zr+_{40}^{96}Zr) in the search for the CME. The isobar ratio (Y) of CME-sensitive observable, charge separation scaled by elliptic anisotropy, is close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio, the naive background baseline. This indicates the potential existence of a CME signal and the presence of remaining nonflow background due to two- and three-particle correlations, which are different between the isobars. In this postblind analysis, we estimate the contributions from those nonflow correlations as a background baseline to Y, utilizing the isobar data as well as Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator simulations. This baseline is found consistent with the isobar ratio measurement, and an upper limit of 10% at 95% confidence level is extracted for the CME fraction in the charge separation measurement in isobar collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV.

Abstract: The differential cross section for Z0 production, measured as a function of the boson's transverse momentum (pT), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p+p →W/Z+X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z0/γ⁎ differential cross section as a function of its pT in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z0/γ⁎ total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z0/γ⁎ TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Abstract: We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=510 GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range 0.23≤−t≤0.67 GeV2. This is the only measurement of the proton-proton elastic cross section in this t range for collision energies above the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) and below the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliders. We find that a constant slope B does not fit the data in the aforementioned t range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for B(t). This is the first measurement below the LHC energies for which the non-constant behavior B(t) is observed. The t dependence of B is also determined using six subintervals of t in the STAR measured t range, and is in good agreement with the phenomenological models. The measured elastic differential cross section dσ/dt agrees well with the results obtained at s=540 GeV for proton–antiproton collisions by the UA4 experiment. We also determine that the integrated elastic cross section within the STAR t-range is σelfid=462.1±0.9(stat.)±1.1(syst.)±11.6(scale) μb.

10. Biomechanical properties of suprapectoral biceps tenodesis with double-anchor knotless luggage tag sutures vs. subpectoral biceps tenodesis with single-anchor whipstitch suture using all-suture anchors

Abstract: Background: As the use of all-suture anchors continues to increase, limited biomechanical data on the use of these anchors in various configurations for tenodesis of the long head biceps tendon (LHBT) exists. The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties of a 2-anchor luggage tag suprapectoral biceps tenodesis (Sup-BT) vs. a single-anchor whipstitch subpectoral biceps tenodesis (Sub-BT) using all-suture anchors. The hypothesis was that the Sub-BT will have a higher ultimate load to failure and less creep relative to the Sup-BT construct. Methods: Eighteen fresh frozen cadaveric humeri were used. The specimens were randomly divided into 2 groups of 9; i) The Sup-BT were performed with 2 1.8 mm knotless all-suture anchors using a luggage-tag fixation configuration, ii) The Sub-BT were performed using a single 1.9 mm all-suture anchor and a whipstitch suture configuration with a tied knot. The humeri were tested on a hydraulic MTS machine where the specimens were preloaded at 5 N for 2 minutes and then cyclically loaded from 5 to 50 N for 1000 cycles at 1 Hz while maximum displacement was recorded with a motion system and markers attached to the bone and bicep tendon. The tendon was then tensioned at a rate of 1 mm/s to obtain the ultimate load to failure. CT scans of the specimens were used to calculate the bone mineral density at the site of the anchor/bone interface and video recordings were captured during load to failure to document all modes of failure. Results: There was no significant difference in the average load to failure of the Sup-BT and Sub-BT groups (197 N ± 45 N (SD), 164 N ± 68 N (SD) respectively; P = .122) or creep under fatigue between the Sup-BT vs. Sub-BT specimens (3.1 mm, SD = 1.5 vs. 2.2 mm, SD = 0.9; P = .162). Abstract: The quasi-static tensile simulation was carried out on the 6061 aluminum alloy round bar specimen, and the tensile specimen model was drawn. Three sets of simulation with uniaxial tensile velocity of 10 s-1, 15 s-1 and 20 s-1 were set at normal temperature, and the numerical simulation of the tensile process was carried out by using ABAQUS software. The experimental data were imported into the model, and the relevant parameters such as damage model were set. The derived simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the established simulation model can simulate the uniaxial tensile behavior of 6061 aluminum alloy well.

Abstract: This paper investigated the adsorption properties of boron nitride materials for La(III), and the possible action mechanism was put forward based on experiments. Then the boron nitride materials were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and FT-IR before and after adsorption. In addition, the effects of pH, the amount of adsorbent, the concentration of La(III) solution, and adsorption time on the adsorption efficiency were also investigated. It is found that under a certain amount of adsorbent when the pH is 7.0 and the concentration of La(III) is 40 mg.L-1, the adsorption ability of La(III) is the best. The maximum adsorption capacity is 201.45 mg.g-1. The adsorption kinetic data are in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models. These results show that boron nitride has a good application prospect for removing and recovering La(III) in water and has a certain practical application value.

13. Escalator Etiquette: Stand or Walk? A Systems Analysis

Abstract: Users of escalators and moving walkways with sufficient space to accommodate two lanes of users often follow an implied etiquette for the two lanes: one for walking and one for standing (in the US, China, and many countries, the convention is “walk left, stand right”). When there is high volume, e.g., when exiting a subway or train station or at the conclusion of an athletic event, the escalators often experience bottleneck congestion that constitutes the primary source of delay. It has been suggested that during such high-congestion periods, it would be more efficient if everyone just stood in both lanes, with empirical evidence used to support this counterintuitive finding. Simple deterministic queueing models are used to show under what conditions such results hold and also to provide further insights regarding tradeoffs between performance metrics as a function of the distribution of walkers and standers, which could inform practical implementation policies to increase efficiency.

Abstract: Abstract We report a new measurement of the production of electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays (HFEs) at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.7) in Au+Au collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 200 GeV. Invariant yields of HFEs are measured for the transverse momentum range of 3.5 < p T < 9 GeV/c in various configurations of the collision geometry. The HFE yields in head-on Au+Au collisions are suppressed by approximately a factor of 2 compared to that in p + p collisions scaled by the average number of binary collisions, indicating strong interactions between heavy quarks and the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Comparison of these results with models provides additional tests of theoretical calculations of heavy quark energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract: In this paper, boron nitride materials were prepared by a two-step synthesis method, and this material’s adsorption property for neodymium ions was explored. The experimental results show that the adsorption capacity of boron nitride is closely related to pH. When the pH is 6.0, the adsorption performance of the material is the best; the kinetic data show that the adsorption equilibrium can be reached in about 150 min, and the adsorption capacity at equilibrium is 207.3 mg.g-1. In addition, the Freundlich and Langmuir models were used to fitting the thermodynamic results. It was found that the adsorption process of boron nitride on Nd(III) involved both monolayer adsorption and multi-layer adsorption. These data indicate that boron nitride has a good adsorption effect on Nd(III) in water and is a promising material for environmental remediation.

16. The gut microbiome modifies the associations of short- and long-term physical activity with body weight changes

Abstract: Abstract Background The gut microbiome regulates host energy balance and adiposity-related metabolic consequences, but it remains unknown how the gut microbiome modulates body weight response to physical activity (PA). Methods Nested in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, a subcohort of 307 healthy men (mean[SD] age, 70[4] years) provided stool and blood samples in 2012–2013. Data from cohort long-term follow-ups and from the accelerometer, doubly labeled water, and plasma biomarker measurements during the time of stool collection were used to assess long-term and short-term associations of PA with adiposity. The gut microbiome was profiled by shotgun metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. A subcohort of 209 healthy women from the Nurses’ Health Study II was used for validation. Results The microbial species Alistipes putredinis was found to modify the association between PA and body weight. Specifically, in individuals with higher abundance of A. putredinis, each 15-MET-hour/week increment in long-term PA was associated with 2.26 kg (95% CI, 1.53–2.98 kg) less weight gain from age 21 to the time of stool collection, whereas those with lower abundance of A. putredinis only had 1.01 kg (95% CI, 0.41–1.61 kg) less weight gain (p interaction = 0.019). Consistent modification associated with A. putredinis was observed for short-term PA in relation to BMI, fat mass%, plasma HbA1c, and 6-month weight change. This modification effect might be partly attributable to four metabolic pathways encoded by A. putredinis, including folate transformation, fatty acid β-oxidation, gluconeogenesis, and stearate biosynthesis. Conclusions A greater abundance of A. putredinis may strengthen the beneficial association of PA with body weight change, suggesting the potential of gut microbial intervention to improve the efficacy of PA in body weight management. Abstract: The deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions enables the exploration of the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions. Noncentral collisions can produce strong magnetic fields on the order of 10^{18} G, which offers a probe into the electrical conductivity of the QGP. In particular, quarks and antiquarks carry opposite charges and receive contrary electromagnetic forces that alter their momenta. This phenomenon can be manifested in the collective motion of final-state particles, specifically in the rapidity-odd directed flow, denoted as v_{1}(y). Here, we present the charge-dependent measurements of dv_{1}/dy near midrapidities for π^{±}, K^{±}, and p(p[over ¯]) in Au+Au and isobar (_{44}^{96}Ru+_{44}^{96}Ru and _{40}^{96}Zr+_{40}^{96}Zr) collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, and in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The combined dependence of the v_{1} signal on collision system, particle species, and collision centrality can be qualitatively and semiquantitatively understood as several effects on constituent quarks. While the results in central events can be explained by the u and d quarks transported from initial-state nuclei, those in peripheral events reveal the impacts of the electromagnetic field on the QGP. Our data put valuable constraints on the electrical conductivity of the QGP in theoretical calculations.

Abstract: Density fluctuations near the QCD critical point can be probed via an intermittency analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report the first measurement of intermittency in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 7.7-200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The scaled factorial moments of identified charged hadrons are analyzed at mid-rapidity and within the transverse momentum phase space. We observe a power-law behavior of scaled factorial moments in Au+Au collisions and a decrease in the extracted scaling exponent (ν) from peripheral to central collisions. The ν is consistent with a constant for different collisions energies in the mid-central (10-40%) collisions. Moreover, the ν in the 0-5% most central Au+Au collisions exhibits a non-monotonic energy dependence that reaches a minimum around sNN = 27 GeV. The physics implications on the QCD phase structure are discussed.

Abstract: Abstract Partons traversing the strongly interacting medium produced in heavy-ion collisions are expected to lose energy depending on their color charge and mass. We measure the nuclear modification factors for charm- and bottom-decay electrons, defined as the ratio of yields, divided by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions, in $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=200$$ s NN = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions to p+p collisions ( $$R_{\textrm{AA}}$$ R AA ), or in central to peripheral Au+Au collisions ( $$R_{\textrm{CP}}$$ R CP ). We find the bottom-decay electron $$R_{\textrm{AA}}$$ R AA and $$R_{\textrm{CP}}$$ R CP to be significantly higher than those of charm-decay electrons. Model calculations including mass-dependent parton energy loss in a strongly coupled medium are consistent with the measured data. These observations provide evidence of mass ordering of charm and bottom quark energy loss when traversing through the strongly coupled medium created in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract: The generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) method is a recently introduced gradient estimation method for handling discontinuities in a wide range of sample performances. We put the GLR methods from previous work into a single framework, simplify regularity conditions to justify the unbiasedness of GLR, and relax some of those conditions that are difficult to verify in practice. Moreover, we combine GLR with conditional Monte Carlo methods and randomized quasi-Monte Carlo methods to reduce the variance. Numerical experiments show that variance reduction could be significant in various applications.

24. Rescue and quality control of historical geomagnetic measurement at Sheshan observatory, China

Abstract: The Sheshan Geomagnetic Observatory (International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) code SSH), China was built in Xujiahui, Shanghai in 1874 and moved to Sheshan, Shanghai at the end of 1932. So far, the SSH has a history of nearly 150 years. It is one of the earliest geomagnetic observatories in China and one of the geomagnetic observatories with the longest history in the world. In this paper, we present the rescue and quality control (QC) of the historical data at the SSH from 1933 to 2019. The rescued data are the absolute hourly mean values (AHMVs) of declination (D), horizontal (H), and vertical (Z) components. Some of these data are paper-based records and some are stored in a floppy disk in BAS, DBF, MDB, and other file storage formats. After digitization and format transformation, we imported the data into the Toad database to achieve the unified data management. We performed statistics of completeness, visual analysis, outliers detects, and data correction on the stored data. We then conducted the consistency test of daily variation and secular variation (SV) by comparing the corrected data with the data of the reference observatory, and the computational data of the COV-OBS model, respectively. The consistency test reveals good agreement. However, the individual data should be used with caution because these data are suspicious values, but there is not any explanation or change registered in the available metadata and logbooks. Finally, we present examples of the datasets in discriminating geomagnetic jerks and study of storms. Abstract: Background: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow is subject to repetitive stress in overhead throwing athletes. This can lead to morphologic changes at the bony attachments of the UCL and hypertrophy of the sublime tubercle. The purpose of this case series is to describe the surgical details and clinical outcomes of a series of competitive baseball pitchers with hypertrophic sublime tubercles who underwent UCL reconstruction (UCLR). Methods: All baseball pitchers who were treated for UCL injuries with significant hypertrophy of the sublime tubercle on preoperative imaging were included in the series. Clinical history, preoperative imaging, intraoperative findings during UCLR, and postoperative outcomes measured with the Conway scale were described. Results: Ten players (average age of 22.9 years [range 13-39]) were included (average follow-up 20.4 months [range 3-38 months]). Five patients also had symptoms of ulnar nerve compression, with 4 requiring transposition at the time of ULCR and 1 at 3 months postoperatively. Bony hypertrophy of the sublime tubercle was confirmed intraoperatively in all cases and excised before UCLR with the docking technique. Of the 7 patients with at least 12-month follow-up postoperatively, 6 had excellent outcomes, and 1 had a fair outcome. Conclusion: Although UCLR in the setting of hypertrophic sublime tubercle can be more complex than typical UCLR, excellent outcomes are achievable with preoperative recognition and surgical planning.

Abstract: China's aging population has brought both opportunities and challenges to the society and economy. Promoting healthy aging is crucial to sustainable social and economic development. Learning the daily mobility pattern and health status of the elderly can provide references for the formulation and implementation of policies such as urban planning and social welfare. We derived key mobility indicators from the epidemiological survey data and then applied exploratory factor analysis to identify latent factors that can significantly affect mobility of the elderly in Southeast China. The study found that: quantity of out of home activities, extent of life space and stability of life space are three important factors that affect elder’s mobility; gender gap is small in elders’ mobility while the urban-rural differences in extent of life space and stability of life space are significant. The maximum distance from home for the rural elderly is significantly higher than urban elderly, while rural elder’s extent of activities is narrower and longer, and the repetition is low. There were significant differences in both the quantity of out of home activities and the extent of living space between elderly in China and Switzerland, and the activities of the elderly in China are more consistent, while the mobility pattern of the elderly in Switzerland are extremely divergent. Epidemiological survey data can be used as a data source for the elder’s daily mobility studying, and the results of this paper provide references for the policy formulation of policies to cope with aging, such as building an elderly-friendly community and caring for the physical and mental health of the elderly.

Abstract: Radiographic osteolysis after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) remains a challenging clinical entity, as it may not initially manifest clinically apparent symptoms but can lead to clinically important complications, such as aseptic loosening. A thorough consideration of medical history and physical examination is essential to rule out other causes of symptomatic TSA—namely, periprosthetic joint infection—as symptoms often progress to vague pain or discomfort due to subtle component loosening. Once confirmed, nonoperative treatment of osteolysis should first be pursued given the potential to avoid surgery-associated risks. If needed, the current surgical options include glenoid polyethylene revision and conversion to reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The current article provides a comprehensive review of the evaluation and management of osteolysis after TSA through an evidence-based discussion of current concepts.

Abstract: Abstract CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double $$\beta $$ β decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li $$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO $$_4$$ 4 crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of $$\alpha $$ α particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 ± 0.2) keV FWHM at the Q-value of $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors’ mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an $$\alpha $$ α particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID.

29. Republication of 'Most Readmissions Following Ankle Fracture Surgery Are Unrelated to Surgical Site Issues: An Analysis of 5056 Cases'

Abstract: Background: Ankle fracture surgeries are generally safe and effective procedures; however, as quality-based reimbursement models are increasingly affected by postoperative readmission, we aimed to determine the causes and risk factors for readmission following ankle fracture surgery. Methods: Ankle fracture cases were identified from the prospectively collected American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program from 2013 to 2014. Demographics, comorbidities, and fracture characteristics were collected. Rates of 30-day adverse events and readmissions were determined as well as the causes for readmission. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors associated with having any adverse events and being readmitted within 30 days of surgery. Results: There were 5056 patients included; 167 (3.3%) were open fractures. The rate of any postoperative adverse event was 5.2%. There were 116 unplanned readmissions, with a readmission rate of 2.3%. Of the 116 unplanned readmissions, 49 (42.2%) were for reasons related to the surgery or surgical site, with the most common causes being deep surgical site/hardware infections (12.9%), superficial site infections (11.2%), and wound disruption (6.9%). Most readmissions were for reasons unrelated to the surgical site (51.7%), including cardiac disorders (8.6%), pulmonary disorders (7.8%), and neurological/psychiatric disorders (6.9%). The cause of readmission was unknown for 6% of readmissions. With multivariable logistic regression, the strongest risk factors for readmission were a history of pulmonary disease (odds ratio [OR], 2.29), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class ≥3 (OR, 2.28), and open fractures (OR, 2.04) (all P < .05). Conclusion: In this cohort of 5056 ankle fracture cases, 2.3% of patients were readmitted within 30 days, with at least 51.7% of all unplanned readmissions due to causes unrelated to the surgery or surgical site. Predictors of readmission included a history of pulmonary disease, higher ASA class, and open fractures. Based on these findings, we advocate close medical follow-up with nonorthopaedic providers after discharge for high-risk patients. Level of Evidence: Level III.

Abstract: Background: Wear and corrosion at the junctions of modular implants are increasingly recognized issues in the design of hip and knee arthroplasty prostheses, yet less is known about their significance in shoulder arthroplasty. Methods: A query of paired total shoulder implant specimens (eg, humeral head and stem components from the same patient) was performed using an institutional implant retrieval registry. Implants were examined under a stereomicroscope and evaluated for evidence of fretting and corrosion using the modified Goldberg scoring system. Available electronic medical records of included specimens were reviewed to report relevant clinical characteristics and identify potential associations with the presence of tribocorrosion. Results: Eighty-three paired total shoulder implant specimens, explanted at a single institution between 2013 and 2020, were analyzed. Corrosion was identified in 52% (43/83) of humeral head components and 40% (33/83) of humeral stem components. Fretting was identified in 29% (24/83) of humeral head components and 28% (23/83) of humeral stem components. Of the 56 paired implants for which clinical data were available, the duration of implantation (DOI) was less than 2 years in 29% of paired implants and greater than 5 years in 36% of implants. The presence of corrosion or fretting was not associated with DOI, a male humeral head taper, or periprosthetic infection as the indication for revision. Conclusion: Mild tribocorrosion was present in more than half of the retrieved humeral implant specimens. However, trunnionosis did not manifest as a clinical cause of revision surgery in our study.

Abstract: A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at sNN=27 GeV. Abstract: The linear and mode-coupled contributions to higher-order anisotropic flow are presented for Au+Au collisions at sNN = 27, 39, 54.4, and 200 GeV and compared to similar measurements for Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The coefficients and the flow harmonics' correlations, which characterize the linear and mode-coupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, indicate a beam energy dependence consistent with an influence from the specific shear viscosity (η/s). In contrast, the dimensionless coefficients, mode-coupled response coefficients, and normalized symmetric cumulants are approximately beam-energy independent, consistent with a significant role from initial-state effects. These measurements could provide unique supplemental constraints to (i) distinguish between different initial-state models and (ii) delineate the temperature (T) and baryon chemical potential (μB) dependence of the specific shear viscosity ηs(T,μB).

33. App Design Features Important for Diabetes Self-management as Determined by the Self-Determination Theory on Motivation: Content Analysis of Survey Responses From Adults Requiring Insulin Therapy

Abstract: BackgroundUsing a diabetes app can improve glycemic control; however, the use of diabetes apps is low, possibly due to design issues that affect patient motivation. ObjectiveThis study aimed to describes how adults with diabetes requiring insulin perceive diabetes apps based on 3 key psychological needs (competence, autonomy, and connectivity) described by the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) on motivation. MethodsThis was a qualitative analysis of data collected during a crossover randomized laboratory trial (N=92) testing 2 diabetes apps. Data sources included (1) observations during app testing and (2) survey responses on desired app features. Guided by the SDT, coding categories included app functions that could address psychological needs for motivation in self-management: competence, autonomy, and connectivity. ResultsPatients described design features that addressed needs for competence, autonomy, and connectivity. To promote competence, electronic data recording and analysis should help patients track and understand blood glucose (BG) results necessary for planning behavior changes. To promote autonomy, BG trend analysis should empower patients to set safe and practical personalized behavioral goals based on time and the day of the week. To promote connectivity, app email or messaging function could share data reports and communicate with others on self-management advice. Additional themes that emerged are the top general app designs to promote positive user experience: patient-friendly; automatic features of data upload; voice recognition to eliminate typing data; alert or reminder on self-management activities; and app interactivity of a sound, message, or emoji change in response to keeping or not keeping BG in the target range. ConclusionsThe application of the SDT was useful in identifying motivational app designs that address the psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and connectivity. User-centered design concepts, such as being patient-friendly, differ from the SDT because patients need a positive user experience (ie, a technology need). Patients want engaging diabetes apps that go beyond data input and output. Apps should be easy to use, provide personalized analysis reports, be interactive to affirm positive behaviors, facilitate data sharing, and support patient-clinician communication.

34. Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction with Hamstring Autograft

Abstract: Background: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstructions have become increasingly common, particularly in youth overhead throwing athletes. These injuries are most commonly due to overuse and repetitive trauma on the inner elbow. Throwers with a deficient UCL often report decreased pitching speeds in addition to elbow pain and instability. Indication: The indications for this procedure include symptomatic valgus elbow instability during overhead throwing motions and a verified rupture of the UCL on advanced imaging. Technique Description: The ipsilateral gracilis tendon is harvested and prepared as an autograft. A 5-cm incision is then made centered over the medial epicondyle. The ulnar nerve is identified and neurolysis is performed both proximally and distally. The fascia overlying the flexor carpi ulnaris is incised, and the two heads of the muscle are split. From this base, the sublime tubercle is identified, and the UCL is opened longitudinally in line with its fibers. A standard guide is used to drill holes in the posterior and anterior aspects of the sublime tubercle. These holes are then connected using a curved curette, and a suture is passed along the tunnels for later graft passage. A 15-mm blind-end tunnel is drilled two-thirds from the tip to the base of the epicondyle. Two smaller tunnels are then drilled with K-wires to pass sutures through the posterior aspect of the epicondyle. The native UCL is closed, and the graft is then passed through the sublime tubercle tunnels. One end of the graft is docked into the epicondylar tunnel, and a docking procedure is then undertaken so that both ends are docked within the humeral tunnel. Stay sutures are tied over a bone bridge, and the two limbs of the graft are sutured together to appropriately tension the graft. Results: In our experience, 94% of athletes return to previous levels of play and experience high patient-reported outcome scores. Discussion/Conclusion: Advancements in UCL reconstruction techniques and our understanding of elbow anatomy should prompt surgeons to continue considering this treatment for patients with significant throwing pain and a strong desire to return to high levels of throwing. 35. Processing renewable and waste-based feedstocks with fluid catalytic cracking: Impact on catalytic performance and considerations for improved catalyst design

Abstract: Refiners around the globe are either considering or are actively replacing a portion of their crude oil inputs originating from fossil sources with alternative sources, including recycled materials (plastics, urban waste, mixed solid waste) and renewable materials (bio-mass waste, vegetable oils). In this paper, we explore such replacement, specifically focusing on the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) operation. Five pyrolysis oils, obtained from municipal solid waste (MSW) and biogenic material (olive stones/pits), were fully characterized and tested at 10% loading against a standard fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) vacuum gasoil (VGO) feed in a bench scale reactor using an industrially available fluid catalytic cracking catalyst based on ultrastable Y zeolite to simulate fluid catalytic cracking co-processing. Despite having unique feed properties, including high Conradson carbon (e.g., up to 19.41 wt%), water (e.g., up to 5.7 wt%), and contaminants (e.g., up to 227 ppm Cl) in some cases, the five pyrolysis oils gave similar yield patterns as vacuum gasoil. Gasoline was slightly (ca. 1 wt%) higher in all cases and LPG slightly (ca. 1 wt%) lower. Olefinicity in the LPG streams were unchanged, bottoms and light cycle oil (LCO) showed no significant changes, while dry gas was slightly (up to −0.2 wt%) lower. Coke selectivity was also unchanged (maximum −7.7 wt%, relatively), suggesting minimal to no heat balance concerns when co-processing in an industrial fluid catalytic cracking unit. The results demonstrate the applicability of municipal solid waste and biogenic originating pyrolysis oils into a refinery. A catalyst design concept is explored, based on higher rare Earth oxide exchange and/or utilization of ZSM-5 zeolite, that would further minimize the impacts of replacing fossil oils with pyrolysis oils, namely one that shifts the 1% higher gasoline into LPG.

Abstract: Measurements of mass and Λ binding energy of Λ4H and Λ4He in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV are presented, with an aim to address the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) problem in hypernuclei systems with atomic number A = 4. The Λ binding energies are measured to be 2.22±0.06(stat.)±0.14(syst.) MeV and 2.38±0.13(stat.)±0.12(syst.) MeV for Λ4H and Λ4He, respectively. The measured Λ binding-energy difference is 0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV for ground states. Combined with the γ-ray transition energies, the binding-energy difference for excited states is −0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV, which is negative and comparable to the value of the ground states within uncertainties. These new measurements on the Λ binding-energy difference in A = 4 hypernuclei systems are consistent with the theoretical calculations that result in ΔBΛ4(1exc+)≈−ΔBΛ4(0g.s.+)

Abstract: This study investigation is intended to research the dynamic response of horizontally curved bridges under heavy vehicle loads. Most of the main factors that affect the bridge dynamic response due to moving vehicles are considered. An improved 3D grid model, based on commercial software ANSYS Mechanical APDL, is developed for the analysis of curved bridges following the 3D shear-flexibility grillage analyzing method. A simplified numeric method, considering the effect of random road roughness and its velocity term, is developed for solving the interaction problem. With the model and numerical method presented, a series of parametric studies are conducted to study the curved bridge dynamic interaction. Based on the investigation of determining factors of curve bridge dynamic interaction, the expression of the upper-bound envelop for impact factors of maximum deflection is given with different surface conditions and highway speed limits as a function of bridge fundamental frequency or bridge central angle. A study is conducted on comparing these empirical equations and serval other major design codes, comments and suggestions are then made based on the discoveries.

Abstract: Background: The rate of complications of open compared to arthroscopic distal clavicle excision remain poorly studied. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to (1) Identify most recent national trends in the usage of open vs. arthroscopic approaches for distal clavicle excision (DCE) from 2007 to 2017; (2) to identify and compare the complication rates for both approaches, and to identify patient-specific risk factors for complications; (3) to identify and compare the revision rate for both approaches; and (4) to identify and compare the reimbursement of each approach. Methods: The PearlDiver database was reviewed for patients undergoing DCE from 2007 to 2017. Patients were stratified into 2 cohorts: those undergoing arthroscopic DCE (n = 8933) and those undergoing open DCE (n = 2295). 39. Deep Learning of Detecting Ionospheric Precursors Associated With M ≥ 6.0 Earthquakes in Taiwan

Abstract: Abstract A short‐term (30 days before an earthquake) prediction of an earthquake is a big challenge in seismology. As a first step, we apply deep learning to the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) data between 2003 and 2014 to detect the seismo‐ionospheric precursors of M ≥ 6.0 earthquakes in Taiwan. The bidirectional Long Short‐Term Memory (Bi‐LSTM) network is employed to use observed input data (features) to obtain the sequential TEC variations. The five input features are sequential vectors of TEC, the geomagnetic index Dst, the solar activity index F10.7, sunspot number (SSN), and solar emission index Lyman‐α. The daily values of F10.7, SSN, and Lyman‐α are converted into hourly values, depending on the solar elevation angle. The calculated hourly TEC variations can be more precisely predicted with this data conversion. We calculate the normalized difference of errors between two 15‐day adjacent stages as the “relative error”. Three trained models with the best discrimination between the relative errors of earthquake and no‐earthquake cases are chosen as classifiers. These three classifiers are then used to have a majority vote to declare whether the 30‐day period is related to the preparation of an earthquake or not. The results show that all 22 positive cases (earthquakes) are successfully predicted, giving a true positive rate of 100%. Among the 19 negative cases (normal cases), 10 of them are true negative.” Overall, a high accuracy of 78.05% is obtained.

Abstract: We report the first multi-differential measurements of strange hadrons of K−, ϕ and Ξ− yields as well as the ratios of ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV with the STAR experiment fixed target configuration at RHIC. The ϕ mesons and Ξ− hyperons are measured through hadronic decay channels, ϕ→K+K− and Ξ−→Λπ−. Collision centrality and rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum spectra for these strange hadrons are presented. The 4π yields and ratios are compared to thermal model and hadronic transport model predictions. At this collision energy, thermal model with grand canonical ensemble (GCE) under-predicts the ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− ratios while the result of canonical ensemble (CE) calculations reproduce ϕ/K−, with the correlation length rc∼2.7 fm, and ϕ/Ξ−, rc∼4.2 fm, for the 0-10% central collisions. Hadronic transport models including high mass resonance decays could also describe the ratios. While thermal calculations with GCE work well for strangeness production in high energy collisions, the change to CE at 3 GeV implies a rather different medium property at high baryon density.

41. Complication rates and outcomes after outpatient shoulder arthroplasty: a systematic review

Abstract: Background: As the number of total shoulder arthroplasties (TSAs) performed annually increases, some surgeons have begun to shift toward performing TSAs in the outpatient setting. However, it is imperative to establish the safety of outpatient TSA. The purpose of this systematic review was to define complication, readmission, and reoperation rates and patient-reported outcomes after outpatient TSA. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines using three databases (PubMed, Ovid, and Embase). English-language publications describing results on complication rates in patients who underwent TSA in an outpatient or ambulatory setting were included. All nonclinical and deidentified database studies were excluded. Bias assessment was conducted with the methodologic index for nonrandomized studies criteria. Results: Seven studies describing outcomes in outpatient TSA were identified for inclusion. The included studies used varying criteria for selecting patients for an outpatient procedure. The total outpatient 90-day complication rate (commonly including hematomas, wound issues, and nerve palsies) ranged from 7.1%-11.5%. Readmission rates ranged from 0%-3.7%, and emergency and urgent care visits ranged from 2.4%-16.1%. Patient-reported outcomes improved significantly after outpatient TSA in all studies. Two studies found a higher complication rate in the comparative inpatient cohort (P = .023-.027). Methodologic index for nonrandomized studies scores ranged from 9 to 11 (of 16) for noncomparative studies (n = 3), while all comparative studies received a score of a 16 (of 24). Conclusion: Outpatient TSA in properly selected patients results in a similar complication rate to inpatient TSA. Further studies are needed to aid in determining proper risk stratification to direct patients to inpatient or outpatient shoulder arthroplasty.

Abstract: Abstract The CUPID Collaboration is designing a tonne-scale, background-free detector to search for double beta decay with sufficient sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space corresponding to the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. One of the CUPID demonstrators, CUPID-Mo, has proved the potential of enriched Li $$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO $$_4$$ 4 crystals as suitable detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search. In this work, we characterised cubic crystals that, compared to the cylindrical crystals used by CUPID-Mo, are more appealing for the construction of tightly packed arrays. We measured an average energy resolution of ( $$6.7\pm 0.6$$ 6.7 ± 0.6 ) keV FWHM in the region of interest, approaching the CUPID target of 5 keV FWHM. We assessed the identification of $$\alpha $$ α particles with and without a reflecting foil that enhances the scintillation light collection efficiency, proving that the baseline design of CUPID already ensures a complete suppression of this $$\alpha $$ α -induced background contribution. We also used the collected data to validate a Monte Carlo simulation modelling the light collection efficiency, which will enable further optimisations of the detector.

Abstract: In recent years, orthobiologics have been of increasing clinical interest in the treatment of shoulder and elbow pathology. In some conditions, such as rotator cuff injury and lateral epicondylitis, there have been high-quality trials that support the use of platelet-rich plasma in reducing pain, restoring functionality, and improving clinical outcomes. However, as the numbers of both cellular-based biologics and the conditions being augmented by biologics continue to expand, there is a substantial need for high-quality investigations to support their routine use in most shoulder and elbow conditions. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current evidence of orthobiologics in the management of shoulder and elbow injury, as nonoperative treatment and as augments to operative treatment.

Abstract: Background and objective: Restoring the shoulder function is a crucial demand of patients with rotator cuff (RC) tears. Most preclinical studies only focused on biological and mechanical measurements. Functional assessment was less investigated in the preclinical studies. This study aims to review the literature of shoulder function in animal models for RC tears and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different shoulder functional assessments and animal models. Method: A literature search for studies used RC tear animal models to evaluate changes in shoulder function was performed. We searched databases of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to September 2019. Animal species, functional parameters, injury and repair types, and study durations were summarised. Cluster analyses were then used to separate animal models with different levels of injury and timings of repair. The reliability and clinical relevance of the included assessments and animal models were then discussed. Results: Fourteen animal studies that related to shoulder function in animal models of RC tears were reviewed. Five methods (gait analysis, passive range of motion test, open field test, staircase test, and running endurance test) to assess shoulder function were identified. Single or massive RC tendon tears and immediate or delayed RC repair models were found. We reported and discussed factors to be considered when researchers would select assessments and animal models for different study purposes. Conclusion: Based on current evidences, gait analysis is the most appropriate method to assess changes in shoulder function of animal models of RC tears. More studies are required to further elucidate the reliability of passive range of motion measurement, open field test, staircase test, and running endurance test. Models that use massive tears and delayed repair better represent the clinical condition found in humans. The translational potential of this article: Using more clinically relevant animal models and assessments for shoulder function identified in this review may help to investigate the value of preclinical researches and promote translation of preclinical interventions into clinical practices.

46. Is preprocessing helpful for suction and curettage in treating cesarean scar pregnancy?

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of suction and curettage (SC), with and without preprocessing, as a therapeutic strategy for cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP). Materials and methods: This retrospective study included 257 patients with CSP who received ultrasound-guided SC. Patients were grouped into the direct SC group (122 cases) and the preprocessing SC group (135 cases). The preprocessing SC group was further divided into four subgroups based on the different preprocessing methods (methotrexate injection, oral mifepristone, methotrexate with mifepristone, and uterine artery embolization/chemoembolization). Results: There was no significant difference in success rates between the preprocessing SC group and the direct SC group (94.07% vs. 97.54%, p > 0.05). The preprocessing SC group had increased intraoperative bleeding, longer operation times, prolonged hospital stays, and increased in-hospital costs (all p values < 0.05, compared with the direct SC group). Among the preprocessing SC group, the in-hospital cost for the uterine artery embolization/chemoembolization subgroup was significantly higher than that for the other subgroups. Conclusions: Preprocessing steps may do not increase the success rate of SC for CSP under certain conditions. Optimization of the preprocessing step requires further research. Abstract: In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, 3He, 4He) produced in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Abstract: We report on the measurements of directed flow v1 and elliptic flow v2 for hadrons (π±, K±, KS0, p, ϕ, Λ and Ξ−) from Au+Au collisions at sNN=3GeV and v2 for (π±, K±, p and p‾) at 27 and 54.4GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3GeV the v2 at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2 and positive v1 slope at 3GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.

Abstract: Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J/ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100% p+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, RpAu, obtained by taking a ratio of J/ψ yield in p+Au collisions to that in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J/ψ yield in both p+p and p+Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Abstract: Background/Objective: The treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) partial tear is controversial. The reconstructive surgery is invasive while the prevalence of subsequent insufficiency after conservative treatment has been reported to range from 11% to 62%. Therefore, a new method that promotes tissue regeneration is needed. The aim of this study was to observe the healing of ACL partial tear biomechanically and histologically after the administration of a thermosensitive hydrogel platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) complex. Methods: The complex was prepared according to a previously published protocol. One hundred and fifty 12-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were included and they were allocated into 4 groups. Lesion control group (Group 1), treatment group (Group 2), gel-only group (Group 3) and intact group (Group 4). Biomechanical testing, histological analysis (H&E and immunohistochemical staining) and scoring was performed. Results: On gross observation, the treatment group showed a continuous ACL with slightly thickened synovium or a partially healed ACL at 6-week follow up.
