Abstract

Temporal networks are commonly used to model real-life phenomena. When these phenomena represent interactions and are captured at a fine-grained temporal resolution, they are modeled as link streams. Community detection is an essential network analysis task. Although many methods exist for static networks, and some methods have been developed for temporal networks represented as sequences of snapshots, few works can handle link streams. This article introduces the first adaptation of the well-known Modularity quality function to link streams. Unlike existing methods, it is independent of the time scale of analysis. After introducing the quality function, and its relation to existing static and dynamic definitions of Modularity, we show experimentally its relevance for dynamic community evaluation.

2. Question Generation in Knowledge-Driven Dialog: Explainability and Evaluation

Abstract

We explore question generation in the context of knowledge-grounded dialogs focusing on explainability and evaluation. Inspired by previous work on planning-based summarisation, we present a model which instead of directly generating a question, sequentially predicts first a fact then a question. We evaluate our approach on 37k test dialogs adapted from the KGConv dataset and we show that, although more demanding in terms of inference, our approach performs on par with a standard model which solely generates a question while allowing for a detailed referenceless evaluation of the model behaviour in terms of relevance, factuality and pronominalisation.

3. WikiFactDiff: A Large, Realistic, and Temporally Adaptable Dataset for Atomic Factual Knowledge Update in Causal Language Models

Abstract

The factuality of large language model (LLMs) tends to decay over time since events posterior to their training are "unknown" to them. One way to keep models up-to-date could be factual update: the task of inserting, replacing, or removing certain simple (atomic) facts within the model. To study this task, we present WikiFactDiff, a dataset that describes the evolution of factual knowledge between two dates as a collection of simple facts divided into three categories: new, obsolete, and static. We describe several update scenarios arising from various combinations of these three types of basic update. The facts are represented by subject-relation-object triples; indeed, WikiFactDiff was constructed by comparing the state of the Wikidata knowledge base at 4 January 2021 and 27 February 2023. Those fact are accompanied by verbalization templates and cloze tests that enable running update algorithms and their evaluation metrics. Contrary to other datasets, such as zsRE and CounterFact, WikiFactDiff constitutes a realistic update setting that involves various update scenarios, including replacements, archival, and new entity insertions. 4. WEBDial, a Multi-domain, Multitask Statistical Dialogue Framework with RDF

Abstract

Typically available dialogue frameworks have adopted a semantic representation based on dialogue-acts and slot-value pairs. Despite its simplicity, this representation has disadvantages such as the lack of expressivity, scalability and explainability. We present WEBDial: a dialogue framework that relies on a graph formalism by using RDF triples instead of slot-value pairs. We describe its overall architecture and the graph-based semantic representation. We show its applicability from simple to complex applications, by varying the complexity of domains and tasks: from single domain and tasks to multiple domains and complex tasks.

6. KGConv, a Conversational Corpus grounded in Wikidata

Abstract

We present KGConv, a large, conversational corpus of 71k conversations where each question-answer pair is grounded in a Wikidata fact. Conversations contain on average 8.6 questions and for each Wikidata fact, we provide multiple variants (12 on average) of the corresponding question using templates, human annotations, hand-crafted rules and a question rewriting neural model. We provide baselines for the task of Knowledge-Based, Conversational Question Generation. KGConv can further be used for other generation and analysis tasks such as single-turn question generation from Wikidata triples, question rewriting, question answering from conversation or from knowledge graphs and quiz generation.

7. CoQAR: Question Rewriting on CoQA

Abstract

Questions asked by humans during a conversation often contain contextual dependencies, i.e., explicit or implicit references to previous dialogue turns. These dependencies take the form of coreferences (e.g., via pronoun use) or ellipses, and can make the understanding difficult for automated systems. One way to facilitate the understanding and subsequent treatments of a question is to rewrite it into an out-of-context form, i.e., a form that can be understood without the conversational context. We propose CoQAR, a corpus containing $4.5$K conversations from the Conversational Question-Answering dataset CoQA, for a total of $53$K follow-up question-answer pairs. Each original question was manually annotated with at least 2 at most 3 out-of-context rewritings. CoQAR can be used in the supervised learning of three tasks: question paraphrasing, question rewriting and conversational question answering. In order to assess the quality of CoQAR's rewritings, we conduct several experiments consisting in training and evaluating models for these three tasks. 8. Active Learning and Multi-label Classification for Ellipsis and Coreference Detection in Conversational Question-Answering

Abstract

In human conversations, ellipsis and coreference are commonly occurring linguistic phenomena. Although these phenomena are a mean of making human-machine conversations more fluent and natural, only few dialogue corpora contain explicit indications on which turns contain ellipses and/or coreferences. In this paper we address the task of automatically detecting ellipsis and coreferences in conversational question answering. We propose to use a multi-label classifier based on DistilBERT. Multi-label classification and active learning are employed to compensate the limited amount of labeled data. We show that these methods greatly enhance the performance of the classifier for detecting these phenomena on a manually labeled dataset., Comment: Published in IWSDS 2021

Abstract

Growth hormone (GH) has been used for over 35 years, and its safety and efficacy has been studied extensively. Experimental studies showing the permissive role of GH/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I) in carcinogenesis have raised concerns regarding the safety of GH replacement in children and adults who have received treatment for cancer and those with intracranial and pituitary tumours. A consensus statement was produced to guide decision-making on GH replacement in children and adult survivors of cancer, in those treated for intracranial and pituitary tumours and in patients with increased cancer risk. With the support of the European Society of Endocrinology, the Growth Hormone Research Society convened a Workshop, where 55 international key opinion leaders representing 10 professional societies were invited to participate. This consensus statement utilized: (1) a critical review paper produced before the Workshop, (2) five plenary talks, (3) evidence-based comments from four breakout groups, and (4) discussions during report-back sessions. Current evidence reviewed from the proceedings from the Workshop does not support an association between GH replacement and primary tumour or cancer recurrence. The effect of GH replacement on secondary neoplasia risk is minor compared to host- and tumour treatment-related factors. There is no evidence for an association between GH replacement and increased mortality from cancer amongst GH-deficient childhood cancer survivors. Patients with pituitary tumour or craniopharyngioma remnants receiving GH replacement do not need to be treated or monitored differently than those not receiving GH. GH replacement might be considered in GH-deficient adult cancer survivors in remission after careful individual risk/benefit analysis. In children with cancer predisposition syndromes, GH treatment is generally contraindicated but may be considered cautiously in select patients.

12. University Funding Formulas: An Analysis of the Québec Reforms and Incentives

Abstract

This paper analyzes the incentives induced by a formula to fund universities based primarily on enrolment. Using a simple game theoretical framework, we argue that the strategic behaviour induced by those formulas is to favour enrollment. We further argue that if the funding value differs by enrolment type, it introduces incentives to substitute enrolment where most profitable. If the public appropriations do not follow the outcomes induced by the formula, the incentives introduce a dynamic "inconsistency," and funding per student can decline. We use these results to discuss the 2018 funding formula changes in Québec. We argue that Québec's latest reform should reduce substitution effects and increase graduate enrolment. We provide simulations of the reform's redistributive effects and show that some universities gain structural advantages over others. Whilst the reform, on a short-term basis, deploys a mechanism to mitigate these advantages, on a long-term basis the effect introduces a larger gap between Québec higher-education institutions.

13. Measurement of secondary cosmic-ray neutrons near the geomagnetic North Pole

Abstract

The spectrum of cosmogenic neutrons at Earth's surface covers a wide energy range, from thermal to several GeV. The flux of secondary neutrons varies with latitude, elevation, solar activity, and nearby material, including ground moisture. We report the results from a campaign to measure count rates in neutron detectors responding to three different energy ranges conducted near the geomagnetic North Pole at CFS Alert, Nunavut, Canada (82.5 degrees , 62.5 degrees W; vertical geomagnetic cutoff rigidity, RC = 0 GV) in June of 2016. In November 2016, we performed a follow-on measurement campaign in southern Canada at similar RC (1.5 GV) and elevations. We conducted these measurements, at varying elevation and ground moisture content, with unmoderated and moderated 3He detectors for thermal and epithermal-to-MeV sensitivity, and with EJ-299-33 pulse shape discrimination plastic scintillator detectors for fast neutrons. Background gamma rays were monitored with NaI(Tl) detectors. Using these data sets, we compared the measured count rates to a predictive model. This is the first ever data set taken from this location on Earth. We find that for the thermal and epithermal-to-MeV neutron measurements the predictive model and data are in good agreement, except at one location on rock-covered ground near 1 km elevation. The discrepancy at that location may be attributable to ground moisture variability. Abstract

Linked Open Data (LOD) is the publicly available RDF data in the Web. Each LOD entity is identfied by a URI and accessible via HTTP. LOD encodes globalscale knowledge potentially available to any human as well as artificial intelligence that may want to benefit from it as background knowledge for supporting their tasks. LOD has emerged as the backbone of applications in diverse fields such as Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Computer Vision, Speech Recognition, and many more. Nevertheless, regardless of the specific tasks that LOD-based tools aim to address, the reuse of such knowledge may be challenging for diverse reasons, e.g. semantic heterogeneity, provenance, and data quality. As aptly stated by Heath et al. Linked Data might be outdated, imprecise, or simply wrong": there arouses a necessity to investigate the problem of linked data validity. This work reports a collaborative effort performed by nine teams of students, guided by an equal number of senior researchers, attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2018) towards addressing such investigation from different perspectives coupled with different approaches to tackle the issue.

16. The Intervention Strategies of Resource Persons Monitoring Home Education: A Typology and a Questionnaire

Abstract

In Quebec (Canada), a new normative framework and the COVID-19 pandemic have precipitated the hiring, by the ministry of education, of at least a hundred new resource persons to monitor home education. According to international writings, these professionals are at the crossroads of normative, political, and educational conflicts. Our literature review reveals that these resource persons might solve such conflicts by adopting some of ten typical intervention strategies: mutual understanding, tolerance of disagreement, search for the child's interest, creativity, competency development, negligence, abuse of power, protection of their professionality, incontestability, and distrust. A questionnaire was constructed on the basis of this typology, aimed at supporting the study of their interactions with families.

Abstract

The SiPM-based Compton Telescope for Safety and Security (SCoTSS) has been developed with inorganic crystalline scintillator material for gamma detection. The instrument is sensitive enough to be used in a mobile survey mode, accumulating energy deposited in any crystal second-by-second and tagging these spectra with GPS position. The SCoTSS imager of course has the additional advantage of being able to produce an image of the radioactive objects in its field of view using events that satisfy a coincidence trigger between the scatter and absorber layers. The Advanced Radiation Detector for UAV Operations (ARDUO) on the other hand, is a non-imaging directional detector intended for use aboard a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The ARDUO detector features exactly the same volume of CsI(Tl) as is used in the absorber layer of a single SCoTSS module, giving it similar detection and alarming sensitivity, and map-making capability. However, in the ARDUO detector, the crystals are arranged closely together to optimize direction determination from self-shielding effects. Flown in a grid pattern with a UAV over an area of extended contamination, the ARDUO detector is also capable of making a map or image of that area. With its close-packed crystal arrangement, the ARDUO detector makes a poor Compton imager but does have some ability to produce a peripheral image in a fly-by. 18. The Experience of Adults Who Were 'Unschooled' during Their Youth: A Phenomenological Approach

Abstract

To better understand the experience of unschooling, non-directive in-depth interviews with five Quebec adults who had experienced it were conducted according to a phenomenological approach, revealing their perceptions of their educational experiences and their families, as well as their views of the world. Certain aspects of the testimonies corroborate the results of previous studies concerning self-directed learning, use of information technology, development of interests, and participation in a support group; others reveal limits when it comes to learning perseverance, pursuit of complex learning goals, school integration, and evaluation. The participants also spoke of family conflicts, parental control, negligence, and the influence of this experience on their views of society, work, the school system, and the role of government in education.

Abstract

The so-called H$\alpha$ third emission occurs around pulsation phase $\varphi$=0.30. It has been observed for the first time in 2011 in some RR Lyrae stars. The emission intensity is very weak, and its profile is a tiny persistent hump in the red side-line profile. We report the first observation of the H$\alpha$ third emission in RR Lyr itself (HD 182989), the brightest RR Lyrae star in the sky. New spectra were collected in 2013-2014 with the Aurelie}spectrograph (resolving power R=22$\,$700, T152, Observatoire de Haute-Provence, France) and in 2016-2017 with the eShel spectrograph (R=11$\,$000, T035, Observatoire de Chelles, France). In addition, observations obtained in 1997 with the Elodie spectrograph (R=42$\,$000, T193, Observatoire de Haute-Provence, France) were reanalyzed. The H$\alpha$ third emission is clearly detected in the pulsation phase interval $\varphi$=0.188-0.407, that is, during about 20% of the period. Its maximum flux with respect to the continuum is about 13%. The presence of this third emission and its strength both seem to depend only marginally on the Blazhko phase. The physical origin of the emission is probably due to the infalling motion of the highest atmospheric layers, which compresses and heats the gas that is located immediately above the rising shock wave. The infalling velocity of the hot compressed region is supersonic, almost 50 km$\cdot$s$^{-1}$, while the shock velocity may be much lower in these pulsation phases. When the H$\alpha$ third emission appears, the shock is certainly no longer radiative because its intensity is not sufficient to produce a blueshifted emission component within the H$\alpha$ profile. 26. The Devil Is in the Details: Defining Civic Engagement

Abstract

For "civic engagement" work to have meaningful and long-term impact upon students, partners, and postsecondary institutions, each institution must undertake the difficult work of defining civic engagement for itself such that the definition aligns with the institution's educational mission and local context. We argue that civic engagement is inherently political and that definitional dilemmas have arisen from the conflation of the terms "service-learning" and "civic engagement." Here we present lessons we have learned from using service-learning to teach citizenship and applying essentially political definitions about "community" and how "citizens" should behave, and offer insights from an extended community-building project that we analyze for its revelations concerning universities' and communities' limited capacities for undertaking long-term civic engagement projects. We conclude by placing the problem of definition in a broader context of issues regarding cost and other limitations universities still need to consider to achieve and sustain civic engagement. Abstract

In response to the Fukushima nuclear reactor accident, on March 20th, 2011, Natural Resources Canada conducted aerial radiation surveys over water just off of the west coast of Vancouver Island. Dose-rate levels were found to be consistent with background radiation, however a clear signal due to Xe-133 was observed. Methods to extract Xe-133 count rates from the measured spectra, and to determine the corresponding Xe-133 volumetric concentration, were developed. Abstract

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a glycoprotein responsible for the transport and biologic availability of sex steroid hormones, primarily testosterone and estradiol. SHBG has been associated with chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes (T2D) and with hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast and prostate cancer. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of 21,791 individuals from 10 epidemiologic studies and validated these findings in 7,046 individuals in an additional six studies. We identified twelve genomic regions (SNPs) associated with circulating SHBG concentrations. Loci near the identified SNPs included SHBG (rs12150660, 17p13.1, p = 1.8 × 10(-106)), PRMT6 (rs17496332, 1p13.3, p = 1.4 × 10(-11)), GCKR (rs780093, 2p23.3, p = 2.2 × 10(-16)), ZBTB10 (rs440837, 8q21.13, p = 3.4 × 10(-09)), JMJD1C (rs7910927, 10q21.3, p = 6.1 × 10(-35)), SLCO1B1 (rs4149056, 12p12.1, p = 1.9 × 10(-08)), NR2F2 (rs8023580, 15q26.2, p = 8.3 × 10(-12)), ZNF652 (rs2411984, 17q21.32, p = 3.5 × 10(-14)), TDGF3 (rs1573036, Xq22.3, p = 4.1 × 10(-14)), LHCGR (rs10454142, 2p16.3, p = 1.3 × 10(-07)), BAIAP2L1 (rs3779195, 7q21.3, p = 2.7 × 10(-08)), and UGT2B15 (rs293428, 4q13.2, p = 5.5 × 10(-06)). These genes encompass multiple biologic pathways, including hepatic function, lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and T2D, androgen and estrogen receptor function, epigenetic effects, and the biology of sex steroid hormone-responsive cancers including breast and prostate cancer. We found evidence of sex-differentiated genetic influences on SHBG. In a sex-specific GWAS, the loci 4q13.2-UGT2B15 was significant in men only (men p = 2.5 × 10(-08), women p = 0.66, heterogeneity p = 0.003). Additionally, three loci showed strong sex-differentiated effects: 17p13.1-SHBG and Xq22.3-TDGF3 were stronger in men, whereas 8q21.12-ZBTB10 was stronger in women. Conditional analyses identified additional signals at the SHBG gene that together almost double the proportion of variance explained at the locus. Using an independent study of 1,129 individuals, all SNPs identified in the overall or sex-differentiated or conditional analyses explained ~15.6% and ~8.4% of the genetic variation of SHBG concentrations in men and women, respectively. The evidence for sex-differentiated effects and allelic heterogeneity highlight the importance of considering these features when estimating complex trait variance.

39. Evolutionary Andragogy within Learning Community for Embodied Transformation in Higher Education: A Case Study of the Next Wave of Leadership Training

Abstract

As the world is experiencing unprecedented changes and challenges, it is essential to develop educational approaches that enable current and future leaders to be effective in meeting them. To do so, education must foster transformation of the learner to achieve an inclusive, dynamic, and flexible approach to life. This dissertation involved a case study evaluation of data collected about a leadership curriculum that attempted to accomplish those objectives within a university setting. The curriculum aimed at enabling the expansion and evolution of each participants' worldview. The curriculum, developed specifically for this study, was taught through an integrally-informed approach to transformative learning within a learning community. A comprehensive overview of the constituent parts of the theories integrated in the curriculum, as well as the synthesis of them combined, is presented in the dissertation, including a discussion of the practical application of leadership development delivered within the curriculum through a content-neutral, andragogical approach to an education that transforms. The study analyzed several types of data, including interviews conducted to determine participants' experience of the leadership course, and student journals. The analysis revealed themes regarding how students' worldviews shifted in partial response to engaging in this evolutionary approach to education. These themes included the following: increased self-awareness and self-care; an increase in confidence; a deepening of authenticity; feeling more connected within diverse social environments; acknowledging an explicit worldview expansion; a positive palpable emotional shift in awareness; an increase in perspective taking ability; developing an evolutionary approach to life; and creating enhanced clarity of purpose. The study concluded with suggestions to inform future applications of this curricular model to more rigorous and comprehensive research settings that would enable even more robust data. The findings of this dissertation, as well as those of future projects, will form building blocks for continually refined and potent approaches to facilitating truly transformative education. Abstract

Respondents to our 2011 survey on the impact of Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) grants administered by HUD between 1994 and 2005 reported deep and lasting impacts on their respective institutions. These grants affected institutional structures, embedded community engagement within institutional cultures and academic curricula, and helped build reciprocal relationships of trust with community-based partners. Vernacularly speaking, COPC grants got a lot of "bang for the buck."

46. Identification of Sexually Abused Female Adolescents at Risk for Suicidal Ideations: A Classification and Regression Tree Analysis

Abstract

This study explored the clinical profiles of 77 female teenager survivors of sexual abuse and examined the association of abuse-related and personal variables with suicidal ideations. Analyses revealed that 64% of participants experienced suicidal ideations. Findings from classification and regression tree analysis indicated that depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and hopelessness discriminated profiles of suicidal and nonsuicidal survivors. The elevated prevalence of suicidal ideations among adolescent survivors of sexual abuse underscores the importance of investigating the presence of suicidal ideations in sexual abuse survivors. However, suicidal ideation is not the sole variable that needs to be investigated; depression, hopelessness and posttraumatic stress symptoms are also related to suicidal ideations in survivors and could therefore guide interventions.
