Search

Classification of spectra (1) and anomaly detection (2) are fundamental steps to guarantee the highest accuracy in redshift measurements (3) in modern all-sky spectroscopic surveys. We introduce a new Galaxy Spectra Neural Network (GaSNet-III) model that takes advantage of generative neural networks to perform these three tasks at once with very high efficiency. We use two different generative networks, an autoencoder-like network and U-Net, to reconstruct the rest-frame spectrum (after redshifting). The autoencoder-like network operates similarly to the classical PCA, learning templates (eigenspectra) from the training set and returning modeling parameters. The U-Net, in contrast, functions as an end-to-end model and shows an advantage in noise reduction. By reconstructing spectra, we can achieve classification, redshift estimation, and anomaly detection in the same framework. Each rest-frame reconstructed spectrum is extended to the UV and a small part of the infrared (covering the blueshift of stars). Owing to the high computational efficiency of deep learning, we scan the chi-squared value for the entire type and redshift space and find the best-fitting point. Our results show that generative networks can achieve accuracy comparable to the classical PCA methods in spectral modeling with higher efficiency, especially achieving an average of $>98\%$ classification across all classes ($>99.9\%$ for star), and $>99\%$ (stars), $>98\%$ (galaxies) and $>93\%$ (quasars) redshift accuracy under cosmology research requirements. By comparing different peaks of chi-squared curves, we define the ``robustness'' in the scanned space, offering a method to identify potential ``anomalous'' spectra. Since its first description in 1948, the Casimir effect has been studied extensively. Standard arguments for its existence hinge on the elimination of certain modes of the electromagnetic field because of the boundary conditions in the Casimir cavity. As such, it has been suggested that the ground state energy of the vacuum within the cavity may be reduced compared to the value outside. Could this have an effect on physical phenomena within the cavity? We study this Casimir energy and probe whether the critical temperature $T_c$ of a superconductor is altered when it is placed in the cavity. We do not detect any change in $T_c$ larger than 12 microKelvin, but theoretically expect a change on the order of 0.025 microKelvin, roughly 1000 times lower than our achieved sensitivity., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2004.13771

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is a key component needed to understand the physical processes governing the flows of gas around galaxies. Quantifying its evolution and its dependence on galaxy properties is particularly important for our understanding of accretion and feedback mechanisms. We select a volume-selected sample of 66 {\it isolated} star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $0.4< z <1.5$ with $\log(M_\star/M_{\odot})> 9$ from the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey. Using MgII 2796,2803 absorptions in background quasars, we measure the covering fraction $f_c$ and quantify how the cool gas profile depends on galaxy properties (such as star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass ($M_\star$) or azimuthal angle relative to the line of sight) and how these dependencies evolve with redshift. The MgII covering fraction of isolated galaxies is a strong function of impact parameter, and is steeper than previously reported. The impact parameter $b_{50}$ at which $f_c = $50\% is $b_{50}=50\pm7$kpc ($65\pm7$ kpc) for $W_r^{2796}>$0.5 \AA ($W_r^{2796}>0.1$ \AA), respectively. It is weakly correlated with SFR ($\propto$ SFR$^{0.08\pm0.09}$) and decreases with cosmic time ($\propto (1+z)^{0.8 \pm 0.7}$), contrary to the expectation of increasingly larger halos with time. The covering fraction is also higher along the minor axis than along the major axis at the $\approx 2 \sigma$ level. The CGM traced by \MgII{} is similar across the isolated galaxy population. Indeed, among the isolated galaxies with an impact parameter below 55 kpc, all have associated MgII absorption with $W_r^{2796}>$0.3\AA, resulting in a steep covering fraction $f_c(b)$., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the detection and characterization of TOI-4994b (TIC 277128619b), a warm Saturn-sized planet discovered by the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TOI-4994b transits a G-type star (V = 12.6 mag) with a mass, radius, and effective temperature of $M_{\star} =1.005^{+0.064}_{-0.061} M_{\odot}$, $R_{\star} = 1.055^{+0.040}_{-0.037} R_{\odot}$, and $T_{\rm eff} = 5640 \pm 110$ K. We obtained follow-up ground-based photometry from the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and the Antarctic Search for Transiting ExoPlanets (ASTEP) telescopes, and we confirmed the planetary nature of TOI-4994b with multiple radial velocity observations from the PFS, CHIRON, HARPS, FEROS, and CORALIE instruments. From a global fit to the photometry and radial velocities, we determine that TOI-4994b is in a 21.5-day, eccentric orbit ($e = 0.32 \pm 0.04$) and has a mass of $M_{P}= 0.280^{+0.037}_{-0.034} M_{J}$, a radius of $R_{P}= 0.762^{+0.030}_{-0.027}R_{J}$, and a Saturn-like bulk density of $\rho_{p} = 0.78^{+0.16}_{-0.14}$ $\rm g/cm^3$. We find that TOI-4994 is a potentially viable candidate for follow-up stellar obliquity measurements. We present a comprehensive analysis of HI absorption around 96 lya emitters (LAEs) at $z\approx3.3$ (median lya luminosity $\approx10^{42}$ erg.s$^{-1}$). These LAEs were identified within 8 MUSE fields, each $1'\times1'$ on the sky and centered on a bright background quasar, as part of the MUSEQuBES survey. Using Voigt profile fitting for all HI absorbers detected within $\pm500$ km.$s^{-1}$ of these LAEs, we compiled a catalog of 800 HI absorption components. Our analysis shows that HI absorption is enhanced near the LAEs compared to the IGM. However, no trend is found between the column densities of HI absorbers and their impact parameters from the LAEs (spanning $\approx54$ to 260 pkpc). Additionally, all galaxies associated with Lyman-limit systems have impact parameters $>50$ pkpc from the quasar sightlines, suggesting that true absorber-hosts may be too faint to detect. The LAEs show an overall HI covering fraction (fc(HI)) of $\approx88\%$ for a threshold logN(HI)$=15$. Notably, at the same threshold, the pairs/group LAEs exhibit a $100\%$ HI covering fraction out to $\approx 250$ pkpc. In contrast, isolated LAEs consistently show a lower fc(HI) of $\approx80\%$. This environmental influence on fc(HI) is also evident up to $\approx 300$ km.$s^{-1}$ in differential bins of line-of-sight velocity. We find an anti-correlation between fc(HI) and the rest-frame lya-emission equivalent width (ew). We present the design, rationale, properties and catalogs of the MusE Gas FLOw and Wind survey (MEGAFLOW), a survey of the cool gaseous halos of $z\sim1$ galaxies using low-ionization MgII absorption systems. The survey consists of 22 quasar fields selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) having multiple ($\geq3$) strong MgII absorption lines over the redshift range $0.31$, i.e. more than 60 galaxies per arcmin$^{2}$. They were identified using a dual detection algorithm based on both continuum and emission line objects. The achieved [OII] 50\%\ completeness is 3.7$\times 10^{-18}$ erg/s/cm$^2$ (corresponding to SFR$>0.01$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ at $z=1$) using realistic mock [OII] emitters and the 50\%\ completeness is $m_{F775W}\approx26$ AB magnitudes for continuum sources. We find that (i) the fraction of [OII] emitting galaxies which have no continuum is $\sim15$\%; (ii) the success rate in identifying at least one galaxy within 500 km/s and 100 kpc is $\approx90$\%\ for MgII absorptions with $W_r^{2796}\gtrsim0.5$~\AA; (iii) the mean number of galaxies per MgII absorption is $2.9\pm1.6$ within the MUSE field-of-view; (iv) of the 80 MgII systems at $0.310^9$ M$_\odot$, and star-formation rates $>1$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$., Comment: 23 pages; 16 figures; in press for publication in A&A; accepted version

We present a study of OVI-bearing gas around 247 low-mass (median log(M*/Msun)~8.7) galaxies at low redshifts (0.1 < z < 0.7) using background quasars as part of the MUSE Quasar-fields Blind Emitters Survey (MUSEQuBES). We find that the average OVI column density, ${\rm log}_{10}$ = $14.14^{+0.09}_{-0.10}$, measured within the virial radius for our sample, is significantly lower than for L_* galaxies. Combining 253 star-forming galaxies (mostly more massive) from the literature with 176 star-forming galaxies from MUSEQuBES, we find that both and the average covering fraction peak at log(M*/Msun)~9.5. The virial temperature corresponding to this stellar mass is ideal for OVI production via collisional ionization. However, we argue that photoionization and/or non-equilibrium processes are necessary to produce the OVI associated with low-mass, dwarf galaxies (log(M*/Msun)<9). The average OVI mass within the virial radius of dwarf galaxies is measured to be $10^{5.2_{-0.1}^{+0.1}}$ Msun. The characteristic normalized impact parameter at which the OVI covering fraction drops to half of its peak value is the largest (~1.1) for galaxies with stellar mass log(M*/Msun)~9.5. We report the presence of a highly ionized metal floor with ${\rm log}_{10}(N({\rm OVI})/{\rm cm}^{-2}) = 13.2$ outside the virial radius of dwarf galaxies inferred from median spectral stacking., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. We report the discovery of a rare Mg II $\lambda$$\lambda$ 2796, 2803 doublet emission halo around a star forming galaxy with $\log (M_\star$/M$_\odot) = 10.3 \pm 0.3$ at $z=0.737$ in deep (9.94 h) VLT/MUSE data from the MUSE-HUDF mosaic. While the central region prominently displays an absorption-dominated Mg II doublet, characterized by discernible P-Cyg features, our examination reveals a remarkably extended Mg II emission, spanning approximately $\sim30$ kpc from the central galaxy. We introduce a simple outflow radiative transfer modeling scheme based on the Sobolev approximation, and we employ a Bayesian Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) fitting to find the best-fitting parameters that match our data. The model reproduces several key features of the observed Mg II halo and allows us to constrain the kinematics and geometry of the outflowing gas. Our data are consistent with a biconical wind whose velocity increases with radius, pointing nearly towards the observer, with an opening angle of $59\pm4^{\circ}$ In general, we find that our outflow model performs better in the inner regions of the galactic wind ($\lesssim 10$ kpc $\approx 6$ half-light radii), reaching a velocity of $\sim120$ km s$^{-1}$ at 10 kpc from the central galaxy. However, discrepancies between the data and the model in the outer regions suggest the possible influence of additional mechanisms, such as inflows, satellite interactions, or turbulence, which might significantly shape the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at larger impact parameters. The emergence of the Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies in recent years has posed a severe challenge to the galaxy formation models as well as the Extended Theories of Gravity. The existence of both dark matter lacking and dark matter dominated systems within the same family of astrophysical objects indeed requires the gravity models to be versatile enough to describe very different gravitational regimes. In this work, we study a non-local extension of the theory of General Relativity that has drawn increasing attention in recent years due to its capability to account for the late time cosmic acceleration without introducing any dark energy fluid. We leverage the kinematic data of three Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies: NGC 1052-DF2 and NGC 1052-DF4, which are dark matter lacking, and Dragonfly 44, which exhibits a highly dominant dark matter component. Our analysis shows that the non-local corrections to the Newtonian potential do not affect the kinematic predictions, hence no spoiling effects emerge when the Non-local Gravity model serves as a dark energy model. We additionally provide the minimum value that the characteristic non-local radii can reach at these mass scales.

BlueMUSE is a blue-optimised, medium spectral resolution, panoramic integral field spectrograph under development for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). With an optimised transmission down to 350 nm, spectral resolution of R$\sim$3500 on average across the wavelength range, and a large FoV (1 arcmin$^2$), BlueMUSE will open up a new range of galactic and extragalactic science cases facilitated by its specific capabilities. The BlueMUSE consortium includes 9 institutes located in 7 countries and is led by the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL). The BlueMUSE project development is currently in Phase A, with an expected first light at the VLT in 2031. We introduce here the Top Level Requirements (TLRs) derived from the main science cases, and then present an overview of the BlueMUSE system and its subsystems fulfilling these TLRs. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We quantify the stellar rotation of galaxies by computing the $\lambda_{R}$ parameter, a proxy for the stellar angular momentum in a sample of 106 galaxies with redshift 0.1 $<$ z $<$ 0.8 and stellar masses from $\sim$10$^{7.5}$ to 10$^{11.8}$ M$_{\odot}$. The sample is located in the CANDELS/GOODS-S and COSMOS fields, and it was observed by various MUSE surveys. We create stellar velocity and velocity dispersion maps using a full-spectrum fitting technique, covering spatially $\sim$2$R_{e}$ for the galaxies. We study the impact of the atmospheric seeing on the spin parameter and apply corrections when pertinent. Through the analysis of the $\lambda_{R}-\epsilon$ diagram, we notice that the fraction of round and massive galaxies increases with redshift. We lack galaxies with $\lambda_{R}$ < 0.1 in the sample and we find only one potential, but uncertain, low-mass slow rotator at z $\sim0.3$. Moreover, we do not see an evident evolution or trend in the stellar angular momentum with redshift. We characterize the sample environment using two indicators: a local estimator based on the Voronoi tesselation method, and a global estimator derived by the use of the Friends-of-Friends algorithm. We find no correlation between the environment and $\lambda_{R}$ given that we are not probing dense regions or massive galaxy structures. We also analyze the kinematic maps of the sample finding that about 40$\%$ of galaxies are consistent with being regular rotators, having rotating stellar discs with flat velocity dispersion maps, while $\sim20\%$ of galaxies have complex velocity maps and can be identified as non-regular rotators in spite of their $\lambda_{R}$ values. For the remaining galaxies the classification is uncertain. The increasing availability of free high-resolution earth observation data covering any point on the globe every few days led to the emergence of new remote sensing tools that can manipulate the very large volumes of data generated by those satellites. We present Sen2Chain, an open-source Python tool that can automate the processing of large time series of Sentinel-2 images for their use in various fields (e.g., environmental health, natural hazards, ecology). Sen2Chain allows downloading images from various earth observation data suppliers, applying geometric and atmospheric corrections using ESA's Sen2Cor tool, and generating and applying cloud masks. Sen2Chain's ability to extract time series of spectral indices (e.g NDVI, NDWI) provides simplified access to value-added environmental information for a wide range of end-users and applications. Sen2Chain enables all data processing stages to be customized and chained together, with the possibility to automate and parallelize the processing, and optimize data management. Sen2Chain is paving the way for the creation and processing of a large earth observation image database dedicated to users who require time-series and/or perform regular environmental observations. The Web tool Sen2Extract is also presented, which enables end-users with no expertise in remote sensing to easily extract time-series for 11 spectral indices values for specific regions of interest.

Absorption line spectroscopy using background quasars can provide strong constraints on galactic outflows. In this paper, we investigate possible scaling relations between outflow properties, namely outflow velocity \Vout, the mass ejection rate $\dot M_{\rm out}$, and the mass loading factor $\eta$ and the host galaxy properties, such as star formation rate (SFR), SFR surface density, redshift, and stellar mass using galactic outflows probed by background quasars from MEGAFLOW and other surveys. We find that $V_{\rm out}$ ($\eta$) is (anti-)correlated with SFR and SFR surface density. We extend the formalism of momentum-driven outflows of Heckman et al. to show that it applies not only to down the barrel studies but also to winds probed by background quasars, suggesting a possible universal wind formalism. Under this formalism, we find a clear distinction between ``strong'' and ``weak'' outflows where ``strong'' outflows seem to have tighter correlations with galaxy properties (SFR or galaxy stellar mass) than ``weak'' outflows., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) contains information on the cumulative effect of galactic outflows over time, generally thought to be caused by feedback from star formation and active galactic nuclei. Observations of such outflows via absorption in CGM gas of quasar sightlines show a significant amount of cold ($\lesssim 10^4 \; \rm{K}$) gas which cosmological simulations struggle to reproduce. Here, we use the adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamical code RAMSES to investigate the effect of cosmic rays (CR) on the cold gas content of the CGM using three zoom realizations of a $z=1$ star-forming galaxy with supernova mechanical feedback: one with no CR feedback (referred to as no-CR), one with a medium CR diffusion coefficient $\kappa = 10^{28} \; \rm{cm^{2}\; s^{-1}}$ (CR$-\kappa_{\rm med}$), and one with a high rate of diffusion of $\kappa = 3\times10^{29} \; \rm{cm^{2}\; s^{-1}}$ (CR$-\kappa_{\rm high}$). We find that, for CR$-\kappa_{\rm med}$, the effects of CRs are largely confined to the galaxy itself as CRs do not extend far into the CGM. However, for CR$-\kappa_{\rm high}$, the CGM temperature is lowered and the amount of outflowing gas is boosted. Our CR simulations fall short of the observed Mg II covering fraction, a tracer of gas at temperatures $\lesssim 10^4 \; \rm{K}$, but the CR$-\kappa_{\rm high}$ simulation is more in agreement with covering fractions of C IV and O VI, which trace higher temperature gas., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 14 pages, 10 figures

The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. We present the coupled oscillator: a new mechanism for signal amplification with widespread application in metrology. We introduce the mechanical theory of this framework, and support it by way of simulations. We present a particular implementation of coupled oscillators: a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) that uses one large (~100mm) N52 magnet coupled magnetically to a small (~0.25mm), oscillating N52 magnet, providing a force resolution of 200zN measured over 1s in a noiseless environment. We show that the same system is able to resolve magnetic gradients of 130aT/cm at a single point (within 500um). This technology therefore has the potential to revolutionize force and magnetic gradient sensing, including high-impact areas such cardiac and brain imaging., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures

Galactic outflows are believed to play a critical role in the evolution of galaxies by regulating their mass build-up and star formation. Theoretical models assumes bipolar shapes for the outflows that extends well into the circumgalctic medium (CGM), up to tens of kpc perpendicular to the galaxies. They have been directly observed in the local Universe in several individual galaxies, e.g., around the Milky Way and M82. At higher redshifts, cosmological simulations of galaxy formation predict an increase in the frequency and efficiency of galactic outflows due to the increasing star formation activity. Outflows are responsible for removing potential fuel for star formation from the galaxy, while at the same enriching the CGM and the intergalactic medium. These feedback processes, although incorporated as key elements of cosmological simulations, are still poorly constrained on CGM scales. Here we present an ultra-deep MUSE image of the mean MgII emission surrounding a sample of galaxies at z~1 that strongly suggests the presence of outflowing gas on physical scales of more than 10kpc. We find a strong dependence of the detected signal on the inclination of the central galaxy, with edge-on galaxies clearly showing enhanced MgII emission along the minor axis, while face-on galaxies display much weaker and more isotropic emission. We interpret these findings as supporting the idea that outflows typically have a bipolar cone geometry perpendicular to the galactic disk. We demonstrate that the signal is not dominated by a few outliers. After dividing the galaxy sample in subsamples by mass, the bipolar emission is only detected in galaxies with stellar mass $\mathrm{M_* \gtrsim 10^{9.5} M_\odot}$., Comment: published in Nature. 25 pages, 10 figures

We present a study of the cool gas ($\approx 10^4$ K) traced by MgII absorptions around groups of galaxies in the MEGAFLOW survey. Using a combination of two algorithms we blindly identify 32 groups of more than 5 galaxies at $0.3 < z < 1.5$ with $10.7 < \log_{10}(M/\rm M_{\odot}) < 13.7$. Among them 26 can be used to study potential counterpart MgII absorptions. We report that 21 out of the total 120 MgII absorption systems present in MEGAFLOW are associated with groups. We observe that the MgII rest-frame equivalent width ($W^{2796}_r$) drops at an impact parameter of $\approx 150$ projected kpc from the closest galaxy and $\approx$ one virial radius from the identified group center indicating that MgII halos scale with the mass of the groups.The impact parameter where the covering fraction exceeds $50\%$ is $\log_{10}(b/\rm kpc) = 2.17 \pm 0.47$ $(2 \sigma)$ and $(b/R_{\rm vir}) = 1.67 \pm 0.98$, which is $\approx 3$ times larger than for field galaxies ($\log_{10}(b/\rm kpc)=1.67\pm0.15$). Finally, we estimate the cool gas column density profile in groups (from the $W^{2796}_r$) and show that its shape follows closely the typical dark matter column density profile for halos at similar redshift and masses.

We introduce the MUSE gAlaxy Groups in COSMOS (MAGIC) survey, which was built to study the impact of environment on galaxy evolution over the last 8 Gyr. It consists of 17 MUSE fields targeting 14 massive structures at intermediate redshift ($0.321.5$. The spectroscopic redshift completeness is high: in the redshift range of [OII] emitters ($0.25 \le z < 1.5$), where most of the groups are found, it globally reaches a maximum of 80% down to $z_{app}^{++}=25.9$, and locally decreases from $\sim 100$% to $\sim50$% in magnitude bins from $z_{app}^{++}=23-24$ to $z_{app}^{++}=25.5$. We find that the fraction of quiescent galaxies increases with local density and with the time spent in groups. A morphological dichotomy is also found between bulge-dominated quiescent and disk-dominated star-forming galaxies. As environment gets denser, the peak of the stellar mass distribution shifts towards $M_*>10^{10}~M_\odot$, and the fraction of galaxies with $M_*<10^9~M_\odot$ decreases significantly, even for star-forming galaxies. We also highlight peculiar features such as close groups, extended nebulae, and a gravitational arc. Our results suggest that galaxies are preprocessed in groups of increasing mass before entering rich groups and clusters. Large sky spectroscopic surveys have reached the scale of photometric surveys in terms of sample sizes and data complexity. These huge datasets require efficient, accurate, and flexible automated tools for data analysis and science exploitation. We present the Galaxy Spectra Network/GaSNet-II, a supervised multi-network deep learning tool for spectra classification and redshift prediction. GaSNet-II can be trained to identify a customized number of classes and optimize the redshift predictions for classified objects in each of them. It also provides redshift errors, using a network-of-networks that reproduces a Monte Carlo test on each spectrum, by randomizing their weight initialization. As a demonstration of the capability of the deep learning pipeline, we use 260k Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra from Data Release 16, separated into 13 classes including 140k galactic, and 120k extragalactic objects. GaSNet-II achieves 92.4% average classification accuracy over the 13 classes (larger than 90% for the majority of them), and an average redshift error of approximately 0.23% for galaxies and 2.1% for quasars. We further train/test the same pipeline to classify spectra and predict redshifts for a sample of 200k 4MOST mock spectra and 21k publicly released DESI spectra. On 4MOST mock data, we reach 93.4% accuracy in 10-class classification and an average redshift error of 0.55% for galaxies and 0.3% for active galactic nuclei. On DESI data, we reach 96% accuracy in (star/galaxy/quasar only) classification and an average redshift error of 2.8% for galaxies and 4.8% for quasars, despite the small sample size available. GaSNet-II can process ~40k spectra in less than one minute, on a normal Desktop GPU. This makes the pipeline particularly suitable for real-time analyses of Stage-IV survey observations and an ideal tool for feedback loops aimed at night-by-night survey strategy optimization., Comment: 23 pages and 31 figures. Aims. We use the stellar line-of-sight velocities of Antlia B (Ant B), a faint dwarf galaxy in the NGC 3109 association, to derive constraints on the fundamental properties of scalar field dark matter (SFDM), which was originally proposed to solve the small-scale problems faced by cold dark matter models. Methods. We used the first spectroscopic observations of Ant B, a distant (d $\sim$ 1.35 Mpc) faint dwarf ($M_\text{V} = -9.7$, $M_\star \sim 8\times10^5$M$_\odot$), from MUSE-Faint, a survey of ultra-faint dwarfs conducted using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. By measuring the line-of-sight velocities of stars in the $1'\times 1'$ field of view, we identified 127 stars as members of Ant B, which enabled us to model its dark matter density profile with the Jeans modelling code GravSphere. We implemented a model for SFDM into GravSphere and used this to place constraints on the self-coupling strength of this model. Results. We find a virial mass of ${M_{200} \approx 1.66^{+2.51}_{-0.92}\times 10^9}$ $M_\odot$ and a concentration parameter of ${c_{200}\approx 17.38^{+6.06}_{-4.20}}$ for Ant B. These results are consistent with the mass-concentration relations in the literature. We constrain the characteristic length scale of the repulsive self-interaction $R_{\text{TF}}$ of the SFDM model to $R_{\text{TF}} \lesssim 180$ pc ($68\%$ confidence level), which translates to a self-coupling strength of $\frac{g}{m^2c^4}\lesssim 5.2 \times 10^{-20}$ eV$^{-1}$cm$^3$. Observationally mapping the relation between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) is of key interest for studies of cosmic reionization. Diffuse hydrogen gas has typically been observed in HI Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) absorption in the spectra of bright background quasars. However, it is important to extend these measurements to background galaxies as quasars become increasingly rare at high redshift and rarely probe closely separated sight-lines. Here we use deep integral field spectroscopy in the MUSE eXtremely Deep Field to demonstrate the measurement of the Ly$\alpha$ transmission at $z\approx4$ in absorption to a background galaxy at $z=4.77$. The HI transmission is consistent with independent quasar sight-lines at similar redshifts. Exploiting the high number of spectroscopic redshifts of faint galaxies (500 between $z=4.0-4.7$ within a radius of 8 arcmin) that are tracers of the density field, we show that Ly$\alpha$ transmission is inversely correlated with galaxy density, i.e. transparent regions in the Ly$\alpha$ forest mark under-dense regions at $z\approx4$. Due to large-scale clustering, galaxies are surrounded by excess HI absorption over the cosmic mean out to 4 cMpc/h. We also find that redshifts from the peak of the Ly$\alpha$ line are typically offset from the systemic redshift by +170 km/s. This work extends results from $z\approx 2 - 3$ to higher redshifts and demonstrates the power of deep integral field spectroscopy to simultaneously measure the ionization structure of the IGM and the large-scale density field in the early Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Lithium-drifted silicon [Si(Li)] has been used for decades as an ionizing radiation detector in nuclear, particle, and astrophysical experiments, though such detectors have frequently been limited to small sizes (few cm$^2$) and cryogenic operating temperatures. The 10-cm-diameter Si(Li) detectors developed for the General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) balloon-borne dark matter experiment are novel particularly for their requirements of low cost, large sensitive area (~10 m$^2$ for the full 1440-detector array), high temperatures (near -40$\,^\circ$C), and energy resolution below 4 keV FWHM for 20--100-keV x-rays. Previous works have discussed the manufacturing, passivation, and small-scale testing of prototype GAPS Si(Li) detectors. Here we show for the first time the results from detailed characterization of over 1100 flight detectors, illustrating the consistent intrinsic low-noise performance of a large sample of GAPS detectors. We present demography of the dynamics and gas-mass fraction of 33 extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with metallicities of $0.015-0.195~Z_\odot$ and low stellar masses of $10^4-10^8~M_\odot$ in the local universe. We conduct deep optical integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) for the low-mass EMPGs with the medium high resolution ($R=7500$) grism of the 8m-Subaru FOCAS IFU instrument by the EMPRESS 3D survey, and investigate H$\alpha$ emission of the EMPGs. Exploiting the resolution high enough for the low-mass galaxies, we derive gas dynamics with the H$\alpha$ lines by the fitting of 3-dimensional disk models. We obtain an average maximum rotation velocity ($v_\mathrm{rot}$) of $15\pm3~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ and an average intrinsic velocity dispersion ($\sigma_0$) of $27\pm10~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ for 15 spatially resolved EMPGs out of the 33 EMPGs, and find that all of the 15 EMPGs have $v_\mathrm{rot}/\sigma_0<1$ suggesting dispersion dominated systems. There is a clear decreasing trend of $v_\mathrm{rot}/\sigma_0$ with the decreasing stellar mass and metallicity. We derive the gas mass fraction ($f_\mathrm{gas}$) for all of the 33 EMPGs, and find no clear dependence on stellar mass and metallicity. These $v_\mathrm{rot}/\sigma_0$ and $f_\mathrm{gas}$ trends should be compared with young high-$z$ galaxies observed by the forthcoming JWST IFS programs to understand the physical origins of the EMPGs in the local universe., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The chemical composition of gas in galaxies can be measured in detail from absorption spectroscopy. By studying gas in galaxies in this way, it is possible to investigate the small and faint galaxies, which are the most numerous in the universe. In particular, the chemical distribution of gas in absorbing systems gives us insight into cycles of gas in and around galaxies. Here we study chemical enrichment within 64 Damped Lyman-alpha Absorption (DLA) systems between $1.7 < z < 4.2$. We use high-resolution spectra from VLT/UVES to infer dust depletion from relative abundances of several metals. We perform a component-by-component analysis within DLAs, and characterise variations in their chemical enrichment. Unlike hydrogen, the metal columns can be characterised for individual components. We use them to derive the dust depletion ([Zn/Fe]fit), as an indicator for chemical enrichment. We find that some DLAs are chemically diverse within themselves, with [Zn/Fe]fit ranging up to 0.62 dex within a single system. This suggests that absorbing gas within these galaxies is chemically diverse. Although we do not find a clear trend of decreasing dust depletion with redshift, we do see that the most chemically enriched systems are at lower redshifts. We also observe evidence for dust-poor components at all redshifts, which may be due to the accretion of pristine gas onto galaxies. We combine the chemical and kinematic properties of the individual gas components and observe potential signatures of infalling gas, with low depletion at velocities below $\sim$100km/s, and outflows, with high depletion and velocities of $\sim$600km/s. We find over-abundances of alpha-elements (an enhancement of $\sim$0.3dex) and under-abundances of Mn in several components, which is likely a signature of core-collapse SNe nucleosythesis in the ISM. We study the link between gas flow events and key galaxy scaling relations: the relations between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass (the main sequence, MS), gas metallicity and stellar mass (the mass-metallicity relation, MZR) and gas metallicity, stellar mass and SFR (the fundamental metallicity relation, FMR). Using all star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the 22 MUSE fields of the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey, we derive the MS, MZR and FMR scaling relations for 385 SFGs with $M = 10^8 - 10^{11.5}$ $M_\odot$ at redshifts 0.35 < z < 0.85. Using the MUSE data and complementary X-Shooter spectra at 0.85 < z < 1.4, we determine the locations of 21 SFGs associated with inflowing or outflowing circumgalactic gas (i.e. with strong MgII absorption in background quasar spectra) relative to these scaling relations. Compared to a control sample of galaxies without gas flows (i.e., without MgII absorption within 70 kpc of the quasar), SFGs with inflow events (i.e., MgII absorption along the major axis) are preferentially located above the MS, while SFGs with ouflow events (i.e., MgII absorption along the minor axis) are preferentially more metal rich. Our observations support the scenario in which gas accretion increases the SFR while diluting the metal content and where circumgalactic outflows are found in more metal-rich galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Alternative cosmological models have been under deep scrutiny in recent years, aiming to address the main shortcomings of the $\Lambda$CDM model. Moreover, as the accuracy of cosmological surveys improved, new tensions have risen between the model-dependent analysis of the Cosmic Microwave Background and lower redshift probes. Within this framework, we review two quantum-inspired non-locally extended theories of gravity, whose main cosmological feature is a geometrically driven accelerated expansion. The models are especially investigated in light of the Hubble and growth tension, and promising features emerge for the Deser--Woodard one. On the one hand, the cosmological analysis of the phenomenological formulation of the model shows a lowered growth of structures but an equivalent background with respect to $\Lambda$CDM. On the other hand, the study of the lensing features at the galaxy cluster scale of a new formulation of non-local cosmology, based on Noether symmetries, makes room for the possibility of alleviating both the $H_0$ and $\sigma_8$ tension. We present the second data release of the MUSE Hubble UDF surveys, which includes the deepest spectroscopic survey ever performed. The MUSE data, with their 3D content, amazing depth, wide spectral range, and excellent spatial and medium spectral resolution, are rich in information. This update of the first release incorporates a new 141-hour adaptive-optics-assisted MXDF field (1' diameter FoV) in addition to the reprocessed 10-hour mosaic (3'x3') and the single 31-hour deep field (1'x1'). We have securely identified and measured the redshift of 2221 sources, an increase of 41% compared to the first release. With the exception of 8 stars, the collected sample consists of 25 nearby galaxies (z < 0.25), 677 OII emitters (z=0.25-1.5), 201 galaxies in the MUSE redshift desert range (z=1.5-2.8), and 1308 LAEs (z=2.8-6.7). This represents an order of magnitude more redshifts than the collection of all spectroscopic redshifts obtained before MUSE in the Hubble UDF area (2221 vs 292). At z > 3, the difference is even more striking, with a factor of 65 increase (1308 vs 20). We compared the measured redshifts against three published photometric redshift catalogs and find the photo-z accuracy to be lower than the constraints provided by photo-z fitting codes. 80% of the galaxies have an HST counterpart. They are on average faint, with a median magnitude of 25.7 and 28.7 for the OII and Ly-alpha emitters, respectively. SED fits show that these galaxies tend to be low-mass star-forming galaxies, with a median stellar mass of 6.2 10**8 M and a median SFR of 0.4 M/yr. 20% of our catalog, or 424 galaxies, have no HST counterpart. The vast majority of these new sources are high EQW z>2.8 LAEs that are detected by MUSE thanks to their bright and asymmetric broad Ly-alpha line. We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$\alpha$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$\alpha$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($\sigma_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}=0.29-0.80<1$) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of $f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0$. Comparing our results with other H$\alpha$ kinematics studies, we find that $v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}$ decreases and $f_{\rm gas}$ increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-$z$ ($z\sim 7$) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at $z\sim 7$., Comment: ApJ in Press

Star-forming galaxies are considered the likeliest source of the H I ionizing Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons that reionized the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. However, above z >~ 6, the neutral intergalactic medium prevents direct observations of LyC. Therefore, recent years have seen the development of indirect indicators for LyC that can be calibrated at lower redshifts and applied in the Epoch of Reionization. Emission from Mg II \ly\ly 2796, 2803 doublet has been proposed as a promising LyC proxy. In this paper, we present new Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations for 8 LyC emitter candidates, selected to have strong Mg II emission lines. We securely detect LyC emission in 50% (4/8) galaxies with 2$\sigma$ significance. This high detection rate suggests that strong Mg II emitters might be more likely to leak LyC than similar galaxies without strong Mg II. Using photoionization models, we constrain the escape fraction of Mg II as ~ 15 -- 60%. We confirm that the escape fraction of Mg II correlates tightly with that of Lyman-alpha (LyA), which we interpret as an indication that the escape fraction of both species is controlled by resonant scattering in the same low column density gas. Furthermore, we show that the combination of the Mg II emission and dust attenuation can be used to estimate the escape fraction of LyC statistically. These findings confirm that Mg II emission can be adopted to estimate the escape fraction of LyA and LyC in local star-forming galaxies and may serve as a useful indirect indicator at the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables, accepted to ApJ

Extended theories of gravity have been extensively investigated during the last thirty years, aiming at fixing infrared and ultraviolet shortcomings of General Relativity and of the associated $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model. Recently, non-local theories of gravity have drawn increasing attention due to their potential to ameliorate both the ultraviolet and infrared behavior of gravitational interaction. In particular, Integral Kernel theories of Gravity provide a viable mechanism to explain the late time cosmic acceleration so as to avoid the introduction of any form of unknown dark energy. On the other hand, these models represent a natural link towards quantum gravity. Here, we study a scalar-tensor equivalent model of General Relativity corrected with non-local terms, where corrections are selected by the existence of Noether symmetries. After performing the weak field limit and generalizing the results to extended mass distributions, we analyse the non-local model at galaxy cluster scales, by comparing the theoretical predictions with gravitational lensing observations from the CLASH program. We obtain agreement with data at the same level of statistical significance as General Relativity. We also provide constraints for the Navarro--Frenk--White parameters and lower bounds for the non-local length scales. We study short-term prediction of wind speed and wind power (every 10 minutes up to 4 hours ahead). Accurate forecasts for these quantities are crucial to mitigate the negative effects of wind farms' intermittent production on energy systems and markets. We use machine learning to combine outputs from numerical weather prediction models with local observations. The former provide valuable information on higher scales dynamics while the latter gives the model fresher and location-specific data. So as to make the results usable for practitioners, we focus on well-known methods which can handle a high volume of data. We study first variable selection using both a linear technique and a nonlinear one. Then we exploit these results to forecast wind speed and wind power still with an emphasis on linear models versus nonlinear ones. For the wind power prediction, we also compare the indirect approach (wind speed predictions passed through a power curve) and the indirect one (directly predict wind power).

The evolution of galaxies is influenced by many physical processes which may vary depending on their environment. We combine Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data of galaxies at 0.25

Using the exquisite MUSE eXtremely Deep Field data, we report the discovery of an MgII emission nebula with an area above a 2$\sigma$ significance level of 1000 proper kpc$^2$, providing the first panoramic view of the spatial distribution of magnesium in the intragroup medium of a low mass group of five star-forming galaxies at z=1.31. The galaxy group members are separated by less than 50 physical kpc in projection and $\approx$120 km/s in velocity space. The most massive galaxy has a stellar mass of 10$^{9.35}$ M$_\odot$ and shows an MgII P-Cygni line profile indicating the presence of an outflow, which is consistent with the spatially resolved spectral analysis showing $\approx+$120 km/s shift of the MgII emission lines with respect to the systemic redshift. The other galaxies are less massive and only show MgII in emission. The detected MgII nebula has a maximal projected extent of $\approx$70 kpc including a low surface brightness (2 $\times$ 10$^{-19}$ erg/s/cm$^{2}$/arcsec$^{2}$) gaseous bridge between two subgroups of galaxies. The presence of absorption features in the spectrum of a background galaxy located at an impact parameter of 19 kpc from the closest galaxy of the group indicates the presence of gas enriched in magnesium even beyond the detected nebula seen in emission, suggesting that we are observing the tip of a larger intragroup medium. The observed MgII velocity gradient suggests an overall rotation of the structure along the major axis of the most massive galaxy. Our MUSE data also reveal extended Fe II* emission in the vicinity of the most massive galaxy, aligned with its minor axis. Extended [OII] emission is found around the galaxy group members and at the location of the MgII bridge. Our results suggest that both tidal stripping effects from galaxy interactions and outflows are enriching the intragroup medium of this system., Comment: Submitted to A&A. [Abridged] Aims. The lowest-mass galaxies, ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, promise unparalleled constraints on how feedback regulates galaxy formation, and on the small-scale matter power spectrum. Their inner dark-matter densities can also be used to constrain dark-matter models. In this paper, we present 201 new stellar line-of-sight velocities from the MUSE-Faint survey for the (ultra-)faint dwarf galaxies Antlia B, Leo T, Hydra II, and Grus 1. Combining these with literature data, we obtain the tightest constraints to date on their dark-matter halo masses and inner dark-matter densities. Methods. We use the Jeans equations implemented in CJAM to model the density profiles and constrain the presence of dark-matter cores and solitons (a prediction of fuzzy dark-matter models). Further modelling is done with GravSphere to test the influence of the choice of modelling tool. We calculate masses, concentrations, and circular velocities from the profiles, include results for Eridanus 2 from our previous work, and compare these properties to theoretical scaling relations, deriving constraints on tidal stripping in the process. Results. We find that dark-matter cores as large as those of more massive dwarf galaxies are ruled out for our galaxies (core radius $r_\mathrm{c} < 66$-$95\,\mathrm{pc}$ at the 68% confidence level). We constrain the soliton radii to $r_\mathrm{sol} < 13$-$112\,\mathrm{pc}$ (68% confidence level). We find that the galaxies are consistent with not having been significantly tidally stripped within their half-light radii. The virial masses and concentrations are sensitive to the choice of dynamical modelling tool: GravSphere produces results consistent with $M_{200} \sim 10^9\,M_\odot$, as expected from models in which ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are re-ionization fossils, while CJAM prefers haloes that are less massive., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables, excluding appendices. Disc-halo decomposition on rotationally supported star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z>1$ are often limited to massive galaxies ($M_\star>10^{10}~M_\odot$) and rely on either deep Integral Field Spectroscopy data or stacking analyses. We present a study of the dark matter (DM) content of nine $z\approx1$ SFGs selected Using the brightest [OII] emitters in the deepest Multi-Unit Spectrograph Explorer (MUSE) field to date, namely the 140hr MUSE Extremely Deep Field, we perform disk-halo decompositions on 9 low-mass SFGs (with $10^{8.5}10^{10}~M_\odot$. The DM halos show constant surface densities of $\sim100~M_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$. Half of the sample shows a strong preference for cored over cuspy DM profiles. The presence of DM cores appears to be related to galaxies with stellar-to-halo mass $\log M_\star/M_{\rm vir}\approx-2.5$. In addition, the cuspiness of the DM profiles is found to be a strong function of the recent star-formation activity. Perpendicularly magnetized spin injector with high Curie temperature is a prerequisite for developing spin optoelectronic devices on 2D materials working at room temperature (RT) with zero applied magnetic field. Here, we report the growth of Ta/CoFeB/MgO structures with a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) on full coverage monolayer (ML) MoS2. A large perpendicular interface anisotropy energy of 0.975mJ/m2 has been obtained at the CoFeB/MgO interface, comparable to that observed in magnetic tunnel junction systems. It is found that the insertion of MgO between the ferromagnetic metal (FM) and the 2D material can effectively prevent the diffusion of the FM atoms into the 2D material. Moreover, the MoS2 ML favors a MgO(001) texture and plays a critical role to establish the large PMA. First principle calculations on a similar Fe/MgO/MoS2 structure reveal that the MgO thickness can modify the MoS2 band structure, from an indirect bandgap with 7ML-MgO to a direct bandgap with 3ML-MgO. Proximity effect induced by Fe results in a splitting of 10meV in the valence band at the {\Gamma} point for the 3ML-MgO structure while it is negligible for the 7ML-MgO structure. These results pave the way to develop RT spin optoelectronic devices on 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide materials.

Using deep (11.2hr) VLT/MUSE data from the MEGAFLOW survey, we report the first detection of extended MgII emission from a galaxy's halo that is probed by a quasar sightline. The MgII $\lambda\lambda$ 2796,2803 emission around the $z = 0.702$ galaxy ($\log(M_*/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 10.05^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$) is detected out to $\approx$25 kpc from the central galaxy and covers $1.0\times10^3$ kpc$^2$ above a surface brightness of $14\times10^{-19} \mathrm{erg} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}\,\mathrm{arcsec}^{-2}$ ($2 \sigma$; integrated over 1200 km s$^{-1}$ =19A and averaged over $1.5 \;\mathrm{arcsec}^2$). The MgII emission around this highly inclined galaxy ($\simeq$75 deg) is strongest along the galaxy's projected minor axis, consistent with the MgII gas having been ejected from the galaxy into a bi-conical structure. The quasar sightline, which is aligned with the galaxy's minor axis, shows strong MgII $\lambda$2796 absorption (EW$_0$ = 1.8A) at an impact parameter of 39kpc from the galaxy. Comparing the kinematics of both the emission and the absorption - probed with VLT/UVES -, to the expectation from a simple toy model of a bi-conical outflow, we find good consistency when assuming a relatively slow outflow ($v_\mathrm{out}= 130\;\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$). We investigate potential origins of the extended MgII emission using simple toy models. With continuum scattering models we encounter serious difficulties in explaining the luminosity of the MgII halo and in reconciling density estimates from emission and absorption. We present the first characterization of the circumgalactic medium of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs), using a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ LAEs detected with the VLT/MUSE in fields centered on 8 bright background quasars. The LAEs have low Ly$\alpha$ luminosities ($\sim 10^{42}\,\text{erg}\,\text{s}^{-1}$) and star formation rates (SFRs) $\sim 1~\text{M}_\odot\,\text{yr}^{-1}$, which for main sequence galaxies corresponds to stellar masses of only $\sim 10^{8.6}\,\text{M}_\odot$. The median transverse distance between the LAEs and the quasar sightlines is 165 proper kpc (pkpc). We stacked the high-resolution quasar spectra and measured significant excess HI and CIV absorption near the LAEs out to 500 $\text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}$ and at least $\approx 250$ pkpc (corresponding to $\approx 7$ virial radii). At $\lesssim 30~\text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}$ from the galaxies the median HI and CIV optical depths are enhanced by an order of magnitude. The absorption is significantly stronger around the $\approx 1/3$ of our LAEs that are part of `groups', which we attribute to the large-scale structures in which they are embedded. We do not detect any strong dependence of either the HI or CIV absorption on transverse distance (over the range $\approx 50-250$ pkpc), redshift, or the properties of the Ly$\alpha$ emission line (luminosity, full width at half maximum, or equivalent width). However, for HI, but not CIV, the absorption at $\lesssim 100\,\text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}$ from the LAE does increase with the SFR. The High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph (HARMONI) is the visible and near-infrared (NIR), adaptive-optics-assisted, integral field spectrograph for ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). It will have both a single-conjugate adaptive optics (SCAO) mode (using a single bright natural guide star) and a laser tomographic adaptive optics (LTAO) mode (using multiple laser guide stars), providing near diffraction-limited hyper-spectral imaging with high performance and good sky coverage, respectively. A unique high-contrast adaptive optics (HCAO) capability has recently been added for exoplanet characterisation. A large detector complement of eight HAWAII-4RG arrays, four choices of spaxel scale, and 11 grating choices with resolving powers ranging from R~3000 to R~17000 make HARMONI a very versatile instrument that can cater to a wide range of observing programmes., Comment: As published in the ESO Messenger

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) contains information on gas flows around galaxies, such as accretion and supernova-driven winds, which are difficult to constrain from observations alone. Here, we use the high-resolution TNG50 cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulation to study the properties and kinematics of the CGM around star-forming galaxies in $10^{11.5}-10^{12}\;M_{\odot}$ halos at $z\simeq$ 1 using mock MgII absorption lines, which we generate by postprocessing halos to account for photoionization in the presence of a UV background. We find that the MgII gas is a very good tracer of the cold CGM, which is accreting inward at inflow velocities of up to 50 km s$^{-1}$. For sight lines aligned with the galaxy's major axis, we find that MgII absorption lines are kinematically shifted due to the cold CGM's significant corotation at speeds up to 50% of the virial velocity for impact parameters up to 60 kpc. We compare mock MgII spectra to observations from the MusE GAs FLow and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey of strong MgII absorbers ($\rm{EW}^{2796\r{A}}_{0}>0.5 \; \r{A}$). After matching the equivalent-width (EW) selection, we find that the mock MgII spectra reflect the diversity of observed kinematics and EWs from MEGAFLOW, even though the sight lines probe a very small fraction of the CGM. MgII absorption in higher-mass halos is stronger and broader than in lower-mass halos but has qualitatively similar kinematics. The median-specific angular momentum of the MgII CGM gas in TNG50 is very similar to that of the entire CGM and only differs from non-CGM components of the halo by normalization factors of $\lesssim$ 1 dex., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 17 pages, 11 figures. We report the discovery of diffuse extended Ly-alpha emission from redshift 3.1 to 4.5, tracing cosmic web filaments on scales of 2.5-4 comoving Mpc. These structures have been observed in overdensities of Ly-alpha emitters in the MUSE Extremely Deep Field, a 140 hour deep MUSE observation located in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Among the 22 overdense regions identified, 5 are likely to harbor very extended Ly-alpha emission at high significance with an average surface brightness of $\mathrm{5 \times 10^{-20} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2}}$. Remarkably, 70% of the total Ly-alpha luminosity from these filaments comes from beyond the circumgalactic medium of any identified Ly-alpha emitters. Fluorescent Ly-alpha emission powered by the cosmic UV background can only account for less than 34% of this emission at z$\approx$3 and for not more than 10% at higher redshift. We find that the bulk of this diffuse emission can be reproduced by the unresolved Ly-alpha emission of a large population of ultra low luminosity Ly-alpha emitters ($\mathrm{<10^{40} erg s^{-1}}$), provided that the faint end of the Ly-alpha luminosity function is steep ($\alpha \lessapprox -1.8$), it extends down to luminosities lower than $\mathrm{10^{38} - 10^{37} erg s^{-1}}$ and the clustering of these Ly-alpha emitters is significant (filling factor $< 1/6$). If these Ly-alpha emitters are powered by star formation, then this implies their luminosity function needs to extend down to star formation rates $\mathrm{< 10^{-4} M_\odot yr^{-1}}$. These observations provide the first detection of the cosmic web in Ly-alpha emission in typical filamentary environments and the first observational clue for the existence of a large population of ultra low luminosity Ly-alpha emitters at high redshift., Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures
