8. MementoMap Framework for Flexible and Adaptive Web Archive Profiling

Abstract

In this work we propose MementoMap, a flexible and adaptive framework to efficiently summarize holdings of a web archive. We described a simple, yet extensible, file format suitable for MementoMap. We used the complete index of the Arquivo.pt comprising 5B mementos (archived web pages/files) to understand the nature and shape of its holdings. We generated MementoMaps with varying amount of detail from its HTML pages that have an HTTP status code of 200 OK. Additionally, we designed a single-pass, memory-efficient, and parallelization-friendly algorithm to compact a large MementoMap into a small one and an in-file binary search method for efficient lookup. We analyzed more than three years of MemGator (a Memento aggregator) logs to understand the response behavior of 14 public web archives. We evaluated MementoMaps by measuring their Accuracy using 3.3M unique URIs from MemGator logs. We found that a MementoMap of less than 1.5% Relative Cost (as compared to the comprehensive listing of all the unique original URIs) can correctly identify the presence or absence of 60% of the lookup URIs in the corresponding archive while maintaining 100% Recall (i.e., zero false negatives)., Comment: In Proceedings of JCDL 2019; 13 pages, 9 tables, 13 figures, 3 code samples, and 1 equation

15. Impact of STIs on cervical cancer screening: Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatisand Neisseria gonorrhoeaein visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) positive women in Mozambique

Abstract

Background Cervical cancer, primarily from HPV, is prevalent in countries like Mozambique, with HIV individuals at higher risk. The Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) screening method can be influenced by STIs like Chlamydia trachomatis(CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae(NG). This study examines CT and NG prevalence in HIV-positive and negative women using VIA in Mozambique’s DREAM program.Methods In this cross-sectional research conducted at a DREAM program facility in Maputo from 01/07/2021 to 31/05/2022, cervical specimens were taken from VIA-positive patients. CT/NG testing was performed using the Cobas® 4800 DNA CT/NG test. Statistical analyses focused on associations and prevalence rates, considering demographic, clinical, and exposure data.Results Among 117 women, we observed a CT prevalence of 6.8% (8/117) and an NG prevalence of 2.6%(3/117). No significant associations between CT/NG infection rates and factors such as age, HIV status, VIA results, or high-risk HPV (hrHPV) was observed. We found a 47% prevalence of hrHPV infections among participants with cervical lesions; no significant association between hrHPV and CT/NG infections was observed.Conclusion This study highlights the prevalence of CT and NG in VIA-positive women in Mozambique, emphasizing the STI burden and suggesting integration of STI screening in cervical cancer prevention strategies.

17. The Voice of Young People -- Contribution for Their Involvement in the School

Abstract

The purpose of this action research project was to gain an understanding of, and to mobilise the voices of diverse young people enrolled in a Portuguese secondary school. A case study methodology, in conjunction with action research methodology, was used for this study. The action research data indicated that projects conceived throughout the study were successful in mobilising the voices of 14 young secondary school students in decision-making processes. The young people engaged democratically, made informed decisions about themselves and their peers, managed conflicts, and reinforced the importance of interpersonal relationships. These changes took place at the individual, as well as group levels.

24. To date or not to date? A comparison of different 14C pretreatment methods applied to archeological marine shells from Vale Boi (Portugal)

Abstract

AbstractMollusk shells are often found in archeological sites, given their great preservation potential and high value as a multipurpose resource, and they can often be the only available materials useful for radiocarbon (14C) dating. However, dates obtained from shells are often regarded as less reliable compared to those from bones, wood, or charcoals due to different factors (e.g., Isotope fractionation, reservoir effects etc.). The standard acid etching pretreatment for mollusk shells is the most used in many 14C laboratories, although another protocol known as CarDS (Carbonate Density Separation) was introduced just over a decade ago. We compare these two methods with two newly proposed methods for intracellular organic matrix extraction. We applied all four methods to samples selected from different archeological layers of the well-known Upper Paleolithic site of Vale Boi, rich in mollusk specimens throughout the stratigraphic sequence. Here we compare our results to previous dates to determine which of these pretreatment methods results in the most reliable 14C dates. Based on the results of this study, all four methods gave inconsistent ages compared to previous dates and the stratigraphic attribution.

32. Experiential Learning of Robotics Fundamentals Based on a Case Study of Robot-Assisted Stereotactic Neurosurgery

Abstract

Robotics has been playing an important role in modern surgery, especially in procedures that require extreme precision, such as neurosurgery. This paper addresses the challenge of teaching robotics to undergraduate engineering students, through an experiential learning project of robotics fundamentals based on a case study of robot-assisted stereotactic neurosurgery. The project was integrated into the curriculum of a Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering program, but can also be integrated in related courses. First, students are given a presentation on the planning and execution of a stereotactic neurosurgery procedure, with special attention being paid to the concepts involved, namely spatial transformations, kinematics, and trajectory planning. Students are then taught to use a robotics simulation tool for robot-assisted stereotactic neurosurgery. They are shown how this can be used as a specialized control application, providing direct feedback on the robot's motion in a neurosurgery scenario. They are then required to select a robotic manipulator, and to develop and implement its control code to make it perform as a robot assistant in this surgical procedure. Project efficacy was evaluated through student self-report data (with dedicated anonymous surveys) and through the impact on academic and pedagogical results (by means of statistical inference). The results of the student surveys show that the robotics simulator for stereotactic neurosurgery is well suited to its role as an experiential learning tool since it enhances the understanding and application of several robotics concepts in an appealing manner. The positive impact of the project learning experience is supported by a comparison to earlier years of student grades, pass rates, and feedback from an institutional survey.
