Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an imaging method that is able to estimate the electrical conductivity distribution of living tissue. This work presents a field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based multi-frequency EIT system for complex, time-resolved bioimpedance measurements. The system has the capability to work with measurement setups with up to 16 current electrodes and 16 voltage electrodes. The excitation current has a range of about 10 $\mu$A to 5 mA, whereas the sinusoidal signal used for excitation can have a frequency of up to 500 kHz. Additionally, the usage of a chirp or rectangular signal excitation is possible. Furthermore, the described system has a sample rate of up to 3480 impedance spectra per second (ISPS). The performance of the EIT system is demonstrated with a resistor-based phantom and tank phantoms. Additionally, first measurements taken from the human thorax during a breathing cycle are presented.

The measurement of the pulse wave has proven to be a vital tool in medical diagnosis. Whereby most pulse wave measurements are carried out at extremities, this work proposes a system for measuring the pulse wave and the Pulse Arrival Time (PAT) in the interior of the ear. The developed measurement device is based on a battery powered microcontroller system. The measurement device can simultaneously acquire a single channel Electrocardiogram (ECG), a dual wavelengths Photoplethysmogram (PPG), the pressure in both ears, the body core temperature, as well the subjects motion. The acquired measurement data can either be saved on a micro SD-card or can be transmitted wireless via Bluetooth or wired via USB to a host PC for further analysis. In Bluetooth communication mode the device can operate battery powered up to 8 hours. We study the emission from a molecular photonic cavity formed by two proximal photonic crystal defect cavities containing a small number (<3) of In(Ga)As quantum dots. Under strong excitation we observe photoluminescence from the bonding and antibonding modes in excellent agreement with expectations from numerical simulations. Power dependent measurements reveal an unexpected peak, emerging at an energy between the bonding and antibonding modes of the molecule. Temperature dependent measurements show that this unexpected feature is photonic in origin. Time-resolved measurements show the emergent peak exhibits a lifetime $\tau_M=0.75 \, \pm 0.1 \, ns $, similar to both bonding and antibonding coupled modes. Comparison of experimental results with theoretical expectations reveal that this new feature arises from a coexistence of weak- and strong-coupling, due to the molecule emitting in an environment whose configuration permits or, on the contrary, impedes its strong-coupling. This scenario is reproduced theoretically for our particular geometry with a master equation reduced to the key ingredients of its dynamics. Excellent qualitative agreement is obtained between experiment and theory, showing how solid-state cavity QED can reveal new regimes of light-matter interaction.

The spin of an electron in a semiconductor quantum dot represents a natural nanoscale solid state qubit. Coupling to nuclear spins leads to decoherence that limits the number of allowed quantum logic operations for this qubit. Traditional approach to characterize decoherence is to explore spin Relaxation and the spin echo, which are equivalent to the studies of the spins 2nd order time-correlator at various external conditions. Here we develop an alternative technique by showing that considerable information about dynamics can be obtained from direct measurements of higher than the 2nd order correlators, which to date have been hindered in semiconductor quantum dots. We show that such correlators are sensitive to pure quantum effects that cannot be explained within the classical framework, and which allow direct determination of ensemble and quantum dephasing times with only repeated projective measurements without the need for coherent spin control. Our method enables studies of pure quantum effects, including tests of the Leggett-Garg type inequalities that rule out local hidden variable interpretation of the spin qubit dynamics.

We report two-photon resonance fluorescence of an individual semiconductor artificial atom. By non-linearly driving a single quantum dot via a two-photon transition, we probe the linewidth of the two-photon processes and show that, similar to their single-photon counterparts, they are close to being Fourier limited at low temperatures. The evolution of the population of excitonic states with the Rabi frequency exhibits a clear s-shaped behavior, indicative of the non-linear response via the two-photon excitation process. We model the non-linear response using a 4-level atomic system representing the manifold of excitonic and biexcitonic states of the quantum dot and show that quantitative agreement is obtained only by including the interaction with LA-phonons in the solid state environment. Finally, we demonstrate the formation of dressed states emerging from a two-photon interaction between the artificial atom and the excitation field. The non-linear optical dressing induces a mixing of all four excitonic states that facilitates the tuning of the polarization selection rules of the artificial atom.

We report the Coulomb mediated hybridization of excitonic states in an optically active, artificial quantum dot molecule. By probing the optical response of the artificial molecule as a function of the static electric field applied along the molecular axis, we observe unexpected avoided level crossings that do not arise from the dominant single particle tunnel coupling. We identify a new few-particle coupling mechanism stemming from Coulomb interactions between different neutral exciton states. Such Coulomb resonances hybridize the exciton wave function over four different electron and hole single-particle orbitals. Comparisons of experimental observations with microscopic 8-band $k \cdot p$ calculations taking into account a realistic quantum dot geometry show good agreement and reveal that the Coulomb resonances arise from broken symmetry in the artificial molecule.

We report the sub-picosecond initialization of a single heavy hole spin in a self-assembled quantum dot with >98.5 % fidelity and without external magnetic field. Using an optically adressable charge and spin storage device we tailor the relative electron and hole tunneling escape timescales from the dot and simultaneously achieve high-fidelity initialization, long hole storage times and high efficiency readout via a photocurrent signal. We measure electric field-dependent Rabi oscillations of the neutral and charged exciton transitions in the ultrafast tunneling regime and demonstrate that tunneling induced dephasing (TID) of excitonic Rabi rotations is the major source for the intensity damping of Rabi oscillations in the low Rabi frequency, low temperature regime. Our results are in very good quantitative agreement with quantum-optical simulations revealing that TID can be used to precisely measure tunneling escape times and extract changes in the Coulomb binding energies for different charge configurations of the quantum dot. Finally, we demonstrate that for sub-picosecond electron tunneling escape TID of a coherently driven exciton transition facilitates ultrafast hole spin initialization with near-unity fidelity.

The control of discrete quantum states in solids and their use for quantum information processing is complicated by the lack of a detailed understanding of the mechanisms responsible for qubit decoherences. For spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots, phenomenological models of decoherence currently recognize two Basic stages; fast ensemble dephasing due to the coherent precession of spin qubits around nearly static but randomly distributed hyperfine fields and a much slower process of irreversible relaxation of spin qubit polarization due to dynamics of the nuclear spin bath induced by complex many-body interaction effects. We unambiguosly demonstrate that such a view on decoherence is greatly oversimplified; the relaxation of a spin qubit state is determined by three rather than two basic stages. The additional stage corresponds to the effect of coherent dephasing processes that occur in the nuclear spin bath that manifests itself by a relatively fast but incomplete non-monotonous relaxation of the central spin polarization at intermediate timescales. This observation changes our understanding of the electron spin qubit decoherence mechanisms in solid state systems.

Pulsed resonant fluorescence is used to probe ultrafast phonon-assisted exciton and biexciton preparation in individual self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots. By driving the system using large area ($\geq10\pi$) near resonant optical pulses, we experimentally demonstrate how phonon mediated dissipation within the manifold of dressed excitonic states can be used to prepare the neutral exciton with a fidelity $\geq 70\%$. By comparing the phonon-assisted preparation with resonant Rabi oscillations we show that the phonon-mediated process provides the higher fidelity preparation for large pulse areas and is less sensitive to pulse area variations. Moreover, by detuning the laser with respect to the exciton transition we map out the spectral density for exciton coupling to the bulk LA-phonon continuum. Similar phonon mediated processes are shown to facilitate direct biexciton preparation via two photon biexciton absorption, with fidelities $>80\%$. Our results are found to be in very good quantitative agreement with simulations that model the quantum dot-phonon bath interactions with Bloch-Redfield theory.
