‘CLM04’ (Reg. no. CV‐155, PI 692953) is a high‐yielding, early‐maturing, and short‐stature Clearfield (BASF Corporation) medium‐grain rice (Oryza sativaL.) cultivar developed by the University of Arkansas Rice Research and Extension Center (RREC) in Stuttgart, AR, and approved for release by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Experimental Station in January 2019. It was derived from the cross ‘RU1202168'/‘Jupiter’ made at RREC in spring 2013 and advanced as F4bulk of a single progeny row 14P54617 at the RREC in summer 2014. From 2015 to 2019, CLM04 was evaluated in 51 statewide and regional replicated trials. The Clearfield medium‐grain cultivar ‘CL272’ as well as conventional medium‐grain cultivars ‘Jupiter’ and ‘Titan’ served as checks. Grain yield of CLM04 was 9.58 Mg ha−1compared with 9.17 Mg ha−1for CL272, 9.97 Mg ha−1for Jupiter, and 10.15 Mg ha−1for Titan. CLM04 has an average height of 107 cm which is 10, 9, and 5 cm taller than Jupiter, Titan, and CL272, respectively. CLM04 reached 50% heading 5 d later than Titan at 87 d from emergence, which is similar to CL272 and Jupiter, which mature at 85 and 87 d, respectively. CLM04 is moderately resistant to leaf blast and susceptible to sheath blight, bacterial panicle blight, kernel smut, and false smut. ‘CLL15’ (Reg. no. CV‐154, PI 692952) is a high‐yielding, very early maturing, short‐stature Clearfield (BASF) long‐grain rice (Oryza sativaL.) cultivar with improved disease package developed by the University of Arkansas Rice Research and Extension Center in Stuttgart, AR, and approved for release by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture in January 2019. It was selected from the cross of RU1302048/RU1302045 made in summer 2013. CLL15 was initiated as a F4bulk of a single progeny row in the winter nursery near Lajas, Puerto Rico, in spring 2015. From 2016 to 2019, CLL15 was evaluated in 47 multilocation trials. Clearfield cultivars ’CL151’, ‘CL153’, and ‘CL172’ served as checks. Grain yield of CLL15 was 9.33 t ha−1across all trials compared with 9.50 t ha−1for ‘CL151’, 8.74 t ha−1for CL153, and 8.74 t ha−1for CL172. However, in the multilocation trials in Arkansas—Arkansas Rice Performance Trial and Producer Rice Evaluation Program—CLL15 consistently produced the highest grain yield, ranging from 8.80 to 10.31 t ha−1. Plant height of CLL15 was 97 cm, which is 2 cm taller than CL172, but shorter than 101 cm for CL151 and 99 cm for CL153. CLL15 reached 50% heading in 83 d, which was similar to CL151 and 2 d earlier than both CL153 and CL172. CLL15 is moderately resistant to blast and susceptible to sheath blight, bacterial panicle blight, kernel smut, and false smut. Clearfield long‐grain cultivar CLL15 was developed by University of Arkansas.CLL15 is high yielding, very early maturing, and short stature.CLL15 is adapted to rice growing conditions throughout Arkansas and the U.S. mid‐South.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the “clay” waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of “OLI Flowsheet” provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and “OLI Flowsheet” enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and “OLI Flowsheet” enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5of recovered.

Aluminum electrodeposition and electrodissolution in mixtures of AlCl3 and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride on carbon paper electrodes consisting of graphitized fibers were investigated. Porous electrodes, such as carbon paper electrodes, often offer possible advantages such as higher nominal current densities and less dendrite formation, over solid planar electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and pulse current deposition were used to investigate Al plating and stripping on this porous structure. The Al morphology on the carbon paper was probed using SEM. Composition and temperature affect the Al electrode performance through their influence on the diffusivity of ions. Therefore, control of the diffusion process during Al plating/stripping is essential.

Interest in the development of redox-flow batteries (RFBs) for large-scale grid storage is growing, and considerable investments have been made into the research and development of RFBs over the past few decades. Unfortunately, practical implementation has been hampered by various cost and performance issues typical of an immature state of development. One critical factor for the competitiveness of this technology is the installed cost. In this work, we incorporate recent developments in all-vanadium RFBs research and present an analysis of the associated cost factors. The major components of a RFB that affect installed cost are identified and used as variables to create a capital cost function. The function is then used to calculate the rate of change of the capital costs with respect to the major components. The capital costs are also calculated for a range of component values and plotted. Key findings include a high sensitivity of system capital cost to purity of vanadium and substantial fractions of the cost associated with perflurorosulfonic acid membranes currently used for proton transport.

Elevated nighttime air temperatures (NTATs) occurring during critical grain-filling stages affected rice physicochemical properties, which impacted functional quality. Six cultivars were grown at multiple field locations from northern to southern Arkansas during 2007 to 2010. Nighttime temperatures were recorded throughout production at each of the locations, and 95th percentiles of NTATs were calculated for each cultivar's reproductive (R) stages. Amylose content and crude protein content decreased linearly, whereas total lipid content increased linearly, with increasing NTATs occurring during the grain-filling stages (R6–R8). Effects of NTAT on proximate composition influenced functional properties. Peak viscosities increased linearly as NTAT increased, whereas setback viscosities decreased. Setback viscosities were linearly correlated to NTATs for medium-grain cultivars, but correlations were quadratic for the long-grain cultivars. Gelatinization temperatures increased linearly with increasing NTAT. The R stages in which correlations were strongest varied by cultivar and by property, hypothesized to result from differences in kernel development patterns among cultivars. These findings have significant implications for rice production scientists and processors, in that understanding the effects of NTAT on physicochemical and functional properties may help explain and reduce quality variation.

Rice quality can vary inexplicably from one lot to another and from year to year. One cause could be the variable temperatures experienced during the nighttime hours of rice kernel development. During the fall of 2004, a controlled temperature study was conducted using large growth chambers, testing nighttime temperatures of 18, 22, 26, and 30°C from 12 a.m. until 5 a.m. throughout kernel development, using rice cultivars Cypress, LaGrue, XP710, XL8, M204, and Bengal. As nighttime temperature increased, head rice yields (HRY) significantly decreased for all cultivars except Cypress and Bengal, for which HRY did not vary among nighttime temperature treatments. Kernel mass did not vary among temperature treatments for any cultivar. Grain dimensions generally decreased as nighttime temperature increased. The number of chalky kernels increased with an increase in nighttime temperature for all cultivars but Cypress. The amylose content of Cypress and LaGrue was significantly lower at the nighttime temperature of 30°C, while total brown rice lipid and protein contents did not vary among temperature treatments for all cultivars.

Rice quality, specifically head rice yield (HRY), can vary inexplicably from one lot to another, and from year to year. In an effort to correlate air temperatures during various growth stages to HRY, growth staging data expressed in degree day units was used to predict the occurrence of sequential growth stages within a set of 17-year historical data, which included HRY and 50% heading dates for two long-grain rice cultivars, (Oryza sativaL) Newbonnet and Lemont, and area weather data. HRY was most strongly affected by the average daily low temperature (or nighttime temperature) during the R8 developmental stage. Lower HRY were associated with high nighttime air temperatures during this stage for both Newbonnet and Lemont. When used as a single variable in a regression model, the nighttime temperature during the R8 developmental stage explained over 25% of the variation in HRY.

We performed a series of experiments designed to elucidate the effects of the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant and an applied electrical field on the wetting behavior in a system containing a sessile droplet of phenylmethyl polysiloxane (PMPS) oil on a polished stainless steel surface submersed in aqueous solution. The voltage difference ranged from −3 to 3 V, which is at least 3 orders of magnitude smaller than from comparable recent work. We report the measured equilibrium contact angle of the droplet as a function of surfactant concentration and field strength. We then modeled the system. We solved the Laplace equation to obtain the 3D field within our system. We expanded the three surface tensions (oil droplet−aqueous solution (oa), oil droplet−metal surface (os), and aqueous solution−metal surface (as)) in a Taylor series with respect to surfactant concentration and local field strength. We use these three surface tensions in Young's equation to obtain the theoretical contact angle of the organic droplet. We demonstrate that the large changes in contact angle due to the simultaneous presence of small concentrations of surfactant and small voltage differences can be accounted for by changes in the oaand assurface tensions.

The present study investigates the change in the shape of oil droplets immersed in an ionic surfactant solution when the droplets are in contact with metal surfaces to which an electrical potential is applied. The three-phase system of aqueous solution−oil−steel was subjected to low-voltage electric potentials, which resulted in sometimes dramatic changes in droplet shape and wetting. This electric potential was applied to the conductive steel surface directly, and the counter electrode was immersed in the solution. Changes in both the shape and wetting extent of hexadecane and phenylmethyl polysiloxane were observed for voltages between ±3.0 V in both sodium dodecyl sulfate and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide solutions. The droplets' behavior was opposite to what would be expected for traditional electrowetting. In one instance, hexadecane droplets in sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions with a voltage of −3.0 V, a rapid and repeating droplet elongation and detachment was observed. Additionally, the impact of the observed phenomena on electrowetting enhanced ultrasonication is presented to demonstrate the potential improvements in industrial ultrasonic cleaning processes. The observations lead to the possibility of employing simple electrowetting techniques in the removal of oil from metal surfaces in a manner that could greatly improve the environmental and economic performance of aqueous cleaning techniques.

Summary. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller ( BET) adsorption isotherm as modified by Robinson and Stokes is used to calculate the liquidus curve of AgNO 3(aq) including the eutectic point and metastable phases. The simplified approach described here predicts the liquidus curves by using sparse data and readily available constants.
