1. A wireless method to obtain the longitudinal beam impedance from scattering parameters

Abstract

The coaxial wire method is a common and appreciated technique to assess the beam coupling impedance of an accelerator element from scattering parameters. Nevertheless, the results obtained from wire measurements could be inaccurate due to the presence of the stretched conductive wire that artificially creates the conditions for the propagation of a Transverse ElectroMagnetic (TEM) mode. The aim of this work is to establish a solid technique to obtain the beam coupling impedance from electromagnetic simulations, without modifications of the device under test. In this framework, we identified a new relation to get the longitudinal resistive wall beam coupling impedance of a circular chamber directly from the scattering parameters and demonstrated that it reduces to the exact theoretical expression. Furthermore, a possible generalization of the method to arbitrary cross-section chamber geometries has been studied and validated with numerical simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The severity and the extent of a large fire event that occurred on the small volcanic island of Stromboli (Aeolian archipelago, Italy) on 25–26 May 2022 were evaluated through remotely sensed data to assess the short-term effect of fire on local plant communities. For this purpose, the differenced normalized burned index (dNBR) was also used to quantify the extent of early-stage vegetation recovery dominated by Saccharum biflorum Forssk. (Poaceae), a rhizomatous C4 perennial grass of Paleotropical origin. The burned area was estimated to have an extension of 337.83 ha, corresponding to 27.7 % of the island surface and to 49.8 % of Stromboli's vegetated area. On the one hand, this event considerably damaged the native plant communities, hosting many species of high biogeographic interest. On the other hand, Saccharum biflorum clearly benefited from fire. In fact, this species showed a very high vegetative performance after burning, being able to exert unchallenged dominance in the early stages of the postfire succession. Our results confirm the complex and probably synergic impact of different human disturbances (repeated fires and the introduction of invasive alien plants) on the natural ecosystems of small volcanic islands.

13. Educational Interventions to Promote Adolescents' Mental Health: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Background: Adolescents often experience discomfort due to individual experiences and the influence of their environment. This discomfort sometimes leads to mental health problems. Education is pivotal in promoting adolescents' mental health through dedicated prevention interventions and through everyday educational practice, both at school and in the community. Objective: To develop an overview of the types of educational interventions aimed at promoting the mental health of adolescents and young adults, providing helpful guidance and insights to teachers/educators. Methods: We conducted a scoping review developed through searches in the CINAHL, Eric, PsycINFO and PubMed databases. We summarised data using descriptive analysis, grouping educational interventions category according to their goals and purposes. Results: Of the initial 704 articles identified, 19 met the study inclusion criteria. Consistent with Dewey's educational theory, most of the interventions reported in the selected studies can be viewed as genuine 'educational' interventions, in that they involved experiential and interactive activities such as discussion groups, role-play and art-based activities. Fewer interventions involved less participatory and more 'information-based' activities, such as lessons. However, in many interventions, the role of teachers/educators in promoting young people's mental health was underestimated; indeed, in only a few cases were they the providers/co-providers of the activities described, and rarely was there continuity/alignment between the interventions and everyday school activities. Conclusions: Conducting a greater number of formal/informal educational interventions to promote adolescents' mental health is imperative, especially in the current socio-historical context, but this enterprise must acknowledge, value and support the important role of teachers/educators as leaders and participants in this endeavour.

18. Investigating elevational gradients of species richness in a Mediterranean plant hotspot using a published flora

Abstract

The Apuan Alps are one of the most peculiar mountain chain in the Mediterranean, being very close to the coastline and reaching an elevation of almost 2000 m. Based on published flora, we investigated the distribution of plant species richness along the whole elevational gradient of this chain considering: (i) all species, (ii) endemic versus alien species; and (iii) functional groups of species based on Raunkiær life forms (RLF). Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were used to analyse richness patterns along the elevational gradient, and elevational richness models versus the area of the elevational belts were fitted to test the effect of surface area. Our results showed decreasing species richness with increasing elevation. In contrast, endemic species richness increased along the elevational gradient. Alien species were mainly distributed at low elevations, but this result should be taken with caution since we used historical data. Species life forms were not equally distributed along the elevation gradient: chamaephytes and hemicryptophytes were the richest groups at high elevations, while therophytes showed highest species richness at low elevations. Our findings suggest that in the Apuan Alps there is a major elevational gradient in species composition that could reflect plant evolutionary history. Furthermore, we highlight the key role of published floras as a relevant source of biodiversity data.

19. Metamaterial insertions for resistive-wall beam-coupling impedance reduction

Abstract

Resistive-wall impedance usually constitutes a significant percentage of the total beamcoupling impedance budget of an accelerator. Reduction techniques often entail high electrical-conductivity coatings. This paper investigates the use of negative-permittivity or negative-permeability materials for sensibly reducing or theoretically nearly cancelling resistive-wall impedance. The proposed approach is developed by means of an equivalent transmission-line model. The effectiveness of such materials is benchmarked for the negative permeability case with experimental measurements in two frequency bandwidths. This first-stage study opens the possibility of considering metamaterials for impedance mitigation.

Abstract

Chapter 2 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. Abstract

Fast kicker magnets are used to inject beam into and eject beam out of the CERN accelerator rings. These kickers are generally transmission line type magnets with a rectangular shaped aperture through which the beam passes. Unless special precautions are taken the impedance of the yoke can provoke significant beam induced heating, especially for high intensities. In addition the impedance may contribute to beam instabilities. The results of longitudinal and transverse impedance measurements, for various kicker magnets, are presented and compared with analytical calculations: in addition predictions from a numerical analysis are discussed.

Abstract

In a recent investigation, we studied two-dimensional point-defected photonic bandgap cavities composed of dielectric rods arranged according to various representative periodic and aperiodic lattices, with special emphasis on possible applications to particle acceleration (along the longitudinal axis). In this paper, we present a new study aimed at highlighting the possible advantages of using hybrid structures based on the above dielectric configurations, but featuring metallic rods in the outermost regions, for the design of extremely-high quality factor, bandgap-based, accelerating resonators. In this framework, we consider diverse configurations, with different (periodic and aperiodic) lattice geometries, sizes, and dielectric/metal fractions. Moreover, we also explore possible improvements attainable via the use of superconducting plates to confine the electromagnetic field in the longitudinal direction. Results from our comparative studies, based on numerical full-wave simulations backed by experimental validations (at room and cryogenic temperatures) in the microwave region, identify the candidate parametric configurations capable of yielding the highest quality factor., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Abstract Here we present the Transcription Factor Encyclopedia (TFe), a new web-based compendium of mini review articles on transcription factors (TFs) that is founded on the principles of open access and collaboration. Our consortium of over 100 researchers has collectively contributed over 130 mini review articles on pertinent human, mouse and rat TFs. Notable features of the TFe website include a high-quality PDF generator and web API for programmatic data retrieval. TFe aims to rapidly educate scientists about the TFs they encounter through the delivery of succinct summaries written and vetted by experts in the field. 40. Development of a High School Level Child Care Training Curriculum Designed To Enhance Post-Graduation Job Skills.

Abstract

This practicum involved the design and implementation of a curriculum that allowed 10 students from a private school to translate the theoretical knowledge gained from a previous child development course into a hands-on experience. This was accomplished through the use of regularly scheduled class sessions and a preschool laboratory, in which the students worked 40 minutes a day, 3 days a week. Different areas of the curriculum were addressed each week, and students were able to apply what they learned in the preschool setting. Although the objectives of the practicum were not met exactly as stated, a pretest and posttest showed overall improvement of students' skills and an attitudinal survey completed by students before and after the course indicated positive changes in student attitudes toward children and a favorable response to the experience. Data from daily observations of students showed that, over time, confidence increased, ability to discipline improved, and guidance techniques became more diversified. Recommendations for improvement of the practicum are provided. Appended are a list of 22 references and related project materials. (GLR)

47. Impact of isolated and chemically modified dietary fiber on bakery products: Current knowledge and future directions.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Dietary fiber (DF) plays a crucial role in promoting human health and preventing diseases. However, the average intake of fiber falls short of the recommended levels in affluent populations, largely due to the overconsumption of high‐energetic foods. Fortification of widely consumed foods with fiber can help address such population deficiencies. Findings: Although fiber fortification can affect product quality, it offers practical advantages such as gelling, thickening, and water‐binding properties. This review focuses on the impact of isolated fiber ingredients, including arabinoxylan, β‐glucan, cellulose, resistant starch, and pectin, on bakery products, and fiber quantification methods to ensure accuracy and comparability in research. The structural interactions of DF during processing, sensory evaluation, and health implications are discussed. Alternative/novel fiber sources are explored as a strategic approach to enhance product attributes. Conclusions: Considerable research has focused on individual fibers, but little is known about the synergistic effects of combining multiple fiber ingredients.
