Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems impose non-perturbative constraints on the zero-temperature phase diagrams of quantum lattice Hamiltonians (always assumed to be local in this paper). LSM theorems have recently been interpreted as the lattice counterparts to mixed 't Hooft anomalies in quantum field theories that arise from a combination of crystalline and global internal symmetry groups. Accordingly, LSM theorems have been reinterpreted as LSM anomalies. In this work, we provide a systematic diagnostic for LSM anomalies in one spatial dimension. We show that gauging subgroups of the global internal symmetry group of a quantum lattice model obeying an LSM anomaly delivers a dual quantum lattice Hamiltonian such that its internal and crystalline symmetries mix non-trivially through a group extension. This mixing of crystalline and internal symmetries after gauging is a direct consequence of the LSM anomaly, i.e., it can be used as a diagnostic of an LSM anomaly. We exemplify this procedure for a quantum spin-1/2 chain obeying an LSM anomaly resulting from combining a global internal $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\times\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ symmetry with translation or reflection symmetry. We establish a triality of models by gauging a $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\subset\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\times\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ symmetry in two ways, one of which amounts to performing a Kramers-Wannier duality, while the other implements a Jordan-Wigner duality. We discuss the mapping of the phase diagram of the quantum spin-1/2 $XYZ$ chains under such a triality. We show that the deconfined quantum critical transitions between Neel and dimer orders are mapped to either topological or conventional Landau-Ginzburg transitions. Finally, we extend our results to $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n}$ clock models and provide a reinterpretation of the dual internal symmetries in terms of $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n}$ charge and dipole symmetries., Comment: 88 pages, 6 figures

The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, with x = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO_2 plane. A sixfold increase of the 3-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature T_c and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found at elevated temperatures, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal T_c. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Fermi surfaces can undergo sharp transitions under smooth changes of parameters. Such transitions can have a topological character, as is the case when a higher-order singularity, one that requires cubic or higher-order terms to describe the electronic dispersion near the singularity, develops at the transition. When time-reversal and inversion symmetries are present, odd singularities can only appear in pairs within the Brillouin zone. In this case, the combination of the enhanced density of states that accompany these singularities and the nesting between the pairs of singularities leads to interaction driven instabilities. We present examples of single $n=3$ (monkey saddle) singularities when time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken. We then turn to the question of what instabilities are possible when the singularities are isolated. For spinful electrons, we find that the inclusion of repulsive interactions destroys any isolated monkey-saddle singularity present in the noninteracting spectrum by developing Stoner or Lifshitz instabilities. In contrast, for spinless electrons and at the mean-field level, we show that an isolated monkey-saddle singularity can be stabilized in the presence of short-range repulsive interactions., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Invertible fermionic topological (IFT) phases are gapped phases of matter with nondegenerate ground states on any closed spatial manifold. When open boundary conditions are imposed, nontrivial IFT phases support gapless boundary degrees of freedom. Distinct IFT phases in one-dimensional space with an internal symmetry group $G^{\,}_{f}$ have been characterized by a triplet of indices $([(\nu,\rho)],[\mu])$. Our main result is an elementary derivation of the fermionic stacking rules of one-dimensional IFT phases for any given internal symmetry group $G^{\,}_{f}$ from the perspective of the boundary, i.e., we give an explicit operational definition for the boundary representation $([(\nu^{\,}_{\wedge},\rho^{\,}_{\wedge})],[\mu^{\,}_{\wedge}])$ obtained from stacking two IFT phases characterized by the triplets of boundary indices $([(\nu^{\,}_{1},\rho^{\,}_{1})],[\mu^{\,}_{1}])$ and $([(\nu^{\,}_{2},\rho^{\,}_{2})],[\mu^{\,}_{2}])$, respectively., Comment: 27 pages + 17 pages of supplemental material, 1 figure

We prove two Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems that apply to any translationally invariant and local fermionic $d$-dimensional lattice Hamiltonian for which fermion-number conservation is broken down to the conservation of fermion parity. We show that when the internal symmetry group $G^{\,}_{f}$ is realized locally (in a repeat unit cell of the lattice) by a nontrivial projective representation, then the ground state cannot be simultaneously nondegenerate, symmetric (with respect to lattice translations and $G^{\,}_{f}$), and gapped. We also show that when the repeat unit cell hosts an odd number of Majorana degrees of freedom and the cardinality of the lattice is even, then the ground state cannot be simultaneously nondegenerate, gapped, and translation symmetric., Comment: 51 pages with 2 figures

We study the stability of topological crystalline superconductors in the symmetry class DIIIR and in two-dimensional space when perturbed by quartic contact interactions. It is known that no less than eight copies of helical pairs of Majorana edge modes can be gapped out by an appropriate interaction without spontaneously breaking any one of the protecting symmetries. Hence, the noninteracting classification $\mathbb{Z}$ reduces to $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{8}$ when these interactions are present. It is also known that the stability when there are less than eight modes can be understood in terms of the presence of topological obstructions in the low-energy bosonic effective theories, which prevent opening of a gap. Here, we investigate the stability of the edge theories with four, two, and one edge modes, respectively. We give an analytical derivation of the topological term for the first case, because of which the edge theory remains gapless. For two edge modes, we employ bosonization methods to derive an effective bosonic action. When gapped, this bosonic theory is necessarily associated to the spontaneous symmetry breaking of either one of time-reversal or reflection symmetry whenever translation symmetry remains on the boundary. Charge neutrality and their expected itinerant nature makes excitons potential transmitters of information. However, exciton mobility remains inaccessible to traditional optical experiments that only create and detect excitons with negligible momentum. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we detect dispersing excitons in the quasi-one-dimensional metallic trichalcogenide, TaSe3. The low density of conduction electrons and the low dimensionality in TaSe3 combined with a polaronic renormalization of the conduction band and the poorly screened interaction between these polarons and photo-induced valence holes leads to various excitonic bound states that we interpret as intrachain and interchain excitons, and possibly trions. The thresholds for the formation of a photo-hole together with an exciton appear as side valence bands with dispersions nearly parallel to the main valence band, but shifted to lower excitation energies. The energy separation between side and main valence bands can be controlled by surface doping, enabling the tuning of certain exciton properties., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, modified version. Nat. We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models., Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters (2020)

We argue that frequent sampling of the fraction of infected people (either by random testing or by analysis of sewage water), is central to managing the COVID-19 pandemic because it both measures in real time the key variable controlled by restrictive measures, and anticipates the load on the healthcare system due to progression of the disease. Knowledge of random testing outcomes will (i) significantly improve the predictability of the pandemic, (ii) allow informed and optimized decisions on how to modify restrictive measures, with much shorter delay times than the present ones, and (iii) enable the real-time assessment of the efficiency of new means to reduce transmission rates. Here we suggest, irrespective of the size of a suitably homogeneous population, a conservative estimate of 15000 for the number of randomly tested people per day which will suffice to obtain reliable data about the current fraction of infections and its evolution in time, thus enabling close to real-time assessment of the quantitative effect of restrictive measures. Still higher testing capacity permits detection of geographical differences in spreading rates. Furthermore and most importantly, with daily sampling in place, a reboot could be attempted while the fraction of infected people is still an order of magnitude higher than the level required for a relaxation of restrictions with testing focused on symptomatic individuals. Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles can arise in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) in which the energy bands are nondegenerate, resulting from inversion or time-reversal symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, experimental evidence for magnetically induced WSMs is scarce. Here, using photoemission spectroscopy, we observe that the degeneracy of Bloch bands is already lifted in the paramagnetic phase of EuCd$_2$As$_2$. We attribute this effect to the itinerant electrons experiencing quasistatic and quasi-long-range ferromagnetic fluctuations. Moreover, the spin nondegenerate band structure harbors a pair of ideal Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Hence, we show that long-range magnetic order and the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry are not an essential requirement for WSM states in centrosymmetric systems, and that WSM states can emerge in a wider range of condensed-matter systems than previously thought., Comment: 34 pages,12 figures

The phase diagram of the quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic $J^{\,}_{1}$-$J^{\,}_{2}$ XXZ chain was obtained by Haldane using bosonization techniques. It supports three distinct phases for $0\leq J^{\,}_{2}/J^{\,}_{1}<1/2$, i.e., a gapless algebraic spin liquid phase, a gapped long-range ordered Neel phase, and a gapped long-range ordered dimer phase. Even though the Neel and dimer phases are not related hierarchically by a pattern of symmetry breaking, it was shown that they meet along a line of quantum critical points with a U(1) symmetry and central charge $c=1$. Here, we extend the analysis made by Haldane on the quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic $J^{\,}_{1}$-$J^{\,}_{2}$ XYZ chain using both bosonization and numerical techniques. We show that there are three Neel phases and the dimer phase that are separated from each other by six planes of phase boundaries realizing U(1) criticality when $0\leq J^{\,}_{2}/J^{\,}_{1}<1/2$. We also show that each long-range ordered phase harbors topological point defects (domain walls) that are dual to those across the phase boundary in that a defect in one ordered phase locally binds the other type of order around its core. By using the bosonization approach, we identify the critical theory that describes simultaneous proliferation of these dual point defects, and show that it supports an emergent U(1) symmetry that originates from the discrete symmetries of the XYZ model. To confirm this numerically, we perform DMRG calculation and show that the critical theory is characterized by the central charge $c=1$ with critical exponents that are consistent with those obtained from the bosonization approach. We propose an exact construction for atypical excited states of a class of non-integrable quantum many-body Hamiltonians in one dimension (1D), two dimensions (2D), and three dimensins (3D) that display area law entanglement entropy. These examples of many-body `scar' states have, by design, other properties, such as topological degeneracies, usually associated with the gapped ground states of symmetry protected topological phases or topologically ordered phases of matter., Comment: 4+ pages, 5 pages

We study a model in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime that is realized by an array of chains, each of which realizes relativistic Majorana fields in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime, coupled via current-current interactions. The model is shown to have a lattice realization in an array of two-leg quantum spin-1/2 ladders. We study the model both in the presence and absence of time-reversal symmetry, within a mean-field approximation. We find regimes in coupling space where Abelian and non-Abelian spin liquid phases are stable. In the case when the Hamiltonian is time-reversal symmetric, we find regimes where gapped Abelian and non-Abelian chiral phases appear as a result of spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. These gapped phases are separated by a discontinuous phase transition. More interestingly, we find a regime where a non-chiral gapless non-Abelian spin liquid is stable. The excitations in this regime are described by relativistic Majorana fields in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime, much as those appearing in the Kitaev honeycomb model, but here emerging in a model of coupled spin ladders that does not break SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We propose a hierarchical architecture for building "logical" Majorana zero modes using "physical" Majorana zero modes at the Y-junctions of a hexagonal network of semiconductor nanowires. Each Y-junction contains three "physical" Majoranas, which hybridize when placed in close proximity, yielding a single effective Majorana mode near zero energy. The hybridization of effective Majorana modes on neighboring Y-junctions is controlled by applied gate voltages on the links of the honeycomb network. This gives rise to a tunable tight-binding model of effective Majorana modes. We show that selecting the gate voltages that generate a Kekul\'e vortex pattern in the set of hybridization amplitudes yields an emergent "logical" Majorana zero mode bound to the vortex core. The position of a logical Majorana can be tuned adiabatically, \textit{without} moving any of the "physical" Majoranas or closing any energy gaps, by programming the values of the gate voltages to change as functions of time. A nanowire network supporting multiple such "logical" Majorana zero modes provides a physical platform for performing adiabatic non-Abelian braiding operations in a fully controllable manner., Comment: slightly revised version. 17 pages, 8 figures

Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloys are commonly recognized as lead-free solders employed in the electronics industry. However, some disadvantages in mechanical properties and their higher melting temperatures compared to Pb-Sn solders prompt new research relating to reinforcement of existing SAC solders. One of the ways to reinforce these solder materials is the formation of composites with nanoparticles as filler materials. Accordingly, this study presents structural features of nanocomposite (Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu)100-x(nanoCo)x solders with up to 0.8 wt.% nano Co. The effect of nano-sized Co particles was investigated by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) in both liquid and solid states, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental data of DTA are compared with available literature data for bulk Sn 3.0Ag-0.5Cu alloy to check the capability of minor nano-inclusions to decrease the melting temperature of the SAC solder. The combination of structural data in liquid and solid states provides important information about the structural transformations of liquid Sn 3.0Ag 0.5Cu alloys caused by minor Co additions and the phase formation during crystallization. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy has shown the mutual substitution of Co and Cu atoms in the Cu6Sn5 and CoSn3 phases, respectively.

We present a two-dimensional lattice model for quantum spin-1/2 for which the low-energy limit is governed by four flavors of strongly interacting Majorana fermions. We study this low-energy effective theory using two alternative approaches. The first consists of a mean-field approximation. The second consists of a Random Phase approximation (RPA) for the single-particle Green's functions of the Majorana fermions built from their exact forms in a certain one-dimensional limit. The resulting phase diagram consists of two competing chiral phases, one with Abelian and the other with non-Abelian topological order, separated by a continuous phase transition. Remarkably, the Majorana fermions propagate in the two-dimensional bulk, as in the Kitaev model for a spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice. We identify the vison fields, which are mobile (they are static in the Kitaev model) domain walls propagating along only one of the two space directions., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures

We develop a method to characterize topological phase transitions for strongly correlated Hamiltonians defined on two-dimensional lattices based on the many-body Berry curvature. Our goal is to identify a class of quantum critical points between topologically nontrivial phases with fractionally quantized Hall (FQH) conductivity and topologically trivial gapped phases through the discontinuities of the many-body Berry curvature in the so-called flux Brillouin zone (fBZ), the latter being defined by imposing all possible twisted boundary conditions. For this purpose, we study the finite-size signatures of several quantum phase transitions between fractional Chern insulators and charge-ordered phases for two-dimensional lattices by evaluating the many-body Berry curvature numerically using exact diagonalization. We observe degeneracy points (nodes) of many-body energy levels at high-symmetry points in the fBZ, accompanied by diverging Berry curvature. We find a correspondence between the number and order of these nodal points, and the change of the topological invariants of the many-body ground states across the transition, in close analogy with Weyl nodes in non-interacting band structures. This motivates us to apply a scaling procedure, originally developed for non-interacting systems, for the Berry curvature at the nodal points. This procedure offers a useful tool for the classification of topological phase transitions in interacting systems harboring FQH-like topological order.

We construct a family of two-dimensional non-Abelian topological phases from coupled wires using a non-Abelian bosonization approach. We then demonstrate how to determine the nature of the non-Abelian topological order (in particular, the anyonic excitations and the topological degeneracy on the torus) realized in the resulting gapped phases of matter. This paper focuses on the detailed case study of a coupled-wire realization of the bosonic $su(2)^{\,}_{2}$ Moore-Read state, but the approach we outline here can be extended to general bosonic $su(2)^{\,}_{k}$ topological phases described by non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories. We construct a two-dimensional (2D) lattice model that is argued to realize a gapped chiral spin liquid with (Ising) non-Abelian topological order. The building blocks are spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with $SU(2)$-symmetric spin-spin interactions. The two-leg ladders are then arranged on rows and coupled through SU(2)-symmetric interactions between consecutive ladders. The intra-ladder interactions are tuned so as to realize the c = 1/2 Ising conformal field theory, a fact that we establish numerically via Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) studies. Time-reversal breaking inter-ladder interactions are tuned so as to open a bulk gap in the 2D lattice system. This 2D system supports gapless chiral edge modes with Ising non-Abelian excitations but no charge excitations, in contrast to the Pfaffian non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; 13 page supp. mat

We discuss the stability of ferromagnetic long-range order in three-dimensional classical XY ferromagnets upon substitution of a small subset of equally oriented bonds by impurity bonds, on which the ferromagnetic exchange J_perp > 0 is replaced by a strong antiferromagnetic coupling J_imp < 0. In the presence of a single impurity bond, once the absolute value of the frustrating coupling J_imp < 0 exceeds a threshold J_c > 0, the ground state becomes two-fold degenerate, corresponding to either clockwise or anticlockwise canting of the spins in the vicinity of the impurity bond. In the presence of a small concentration of impurity bonds, the effective low-energy Hamiltonian is that of Ising variables encoding the sense of rotation of the local canting around the impurities. Those degrees of freedom interact through a dipolar interaction mediated by spin waves. A ferromagnetic Ising ground state indicates the instability of the XY ferromagnet towards a spiral state with a wave vector proportional to the concentration of impurity bonds. To analyze under which circumstances such a ground state arises, we study first impurities forming superlattices. For a subclass of those, we can rigorously establish the existence of spiral order. For another class of superlattices, the Ising variables order ferromagnetically in planes perpendicular to the orientation of impurity bonds, but antiferromagnetically parallel to it, which results in a fan-like XY ground state. Second, we consider the case when the impurity bonds are randomly distributed on the three-dimensional host lattice according to a Poisson process. We show the phenomenon of spiral order by disorder with an ordering wave vector proportional to the impurity concentration. Multiferroism can originate from the breaking of inversion symmetry caused by magnetic-spiral order. The usual mechanism for stabilizing a magnetic spiral is competition between magnetic exchange interactions differing by their range and sign, such as nearest-neighbor and next-nearest- neighbor interactions. Since the latter are usually weak the onset temperatures for multiferroism via this mechanism are typically low. By considering a realistic model for YBaCuFeO$_5$ we propose an alternative mechanism for magnetic-spiral order, and hence for multiferroism, that occurs at much higher temperatures. We show using Monte-Carlo simulations and electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory that the Heisenberg model on a geometrically non-frustrated lattice with only nearest-neighbor interactions can have a spiral phase up to high temperature when frustrating bonds are introduced randomly along a single crystallographic direction as caused, e.g., by a particular type of chemical disorder. This long-range correlated pattern of frustration avoids ferroelectrically inactive spin glass order. We report an extraordinary pressure dependence of the magnetic interactions in the metal-organic system [(CuF$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$)$_2$pyrazine]. At zero pressure, this material realizes a quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. By high-pressure, high-field susceptibility measurements we show that the dominant exchange parameter is reduced continuously by a factor of 2 upon compression. Above 18 kbar, a phase transition occurs, inducing an orbital re-ordering that switches the dimensionality, transforming the Q2D lattice into weakly coupled chains (Q1D). We explain the microscopic mechanisms for both phenomena by combining detailed x-ray and neutron diffraction results with quantitative modeling using spin-polarized density functional theory., Comment: Revised manuscript. We construct two-dimensional non-Abelian topologically ordered states by strongly coupling arrays of one-dimensional quantum wires via interactions. In our scheme, all charge degrees of freedom are gapped, so the construction can use either quantum wires or quantum spin chains as building blocks, with the same end result. The construction gaps the degrees of freedom in the bulk, while leaving decoupled states at the edges that are described by conformal field theories (CFT) in $(1+1)$-dimensional space and time. We consider both the cases where time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is present or absent. When TRS is absent, the edge states are chiral and stable. We prescribe, in particular, how to arrive at all the edge states described by the unitary CFT minimal models with central charges $c<1$. These non-Abelian spin liquid states have vanishing quantum Hall conductivities, but non-zero thermal ones. When TRS is present, we describe scenarios where the bulk state can be a non-Abelian, non-chiral, and gapped quantum spin liquid, or a gapless one. Coupled-wire constructions have proven to be useful tools to characterize Abelian and non-Abelian topological states of matter in two spatial dimensions. In many cases, their success has been complemented by the vast arsenal of other theoretical tools available to study such systems. In three dimensions, however, much less is known about topological phases. Since the theoretical arsenal in this case is smaller, it stands to reason that wire constructions, which are based on one-dimensional physics, could play a useful role in developing a greater microscopic understanding of three-dimensional topological phases. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive strategy, based on the geometric arrangement of commuting projectors in the toric code, to generate and characterize coupled-wire realizations of strongly-interacting three-dimensional topological phases. We show how this method can be used to construct pointlike and linelike excitations, and to determine the topological degeneracy. We also point out how, with minor modifications, the machinery already developed in two dimensions can be naturally applied to study the surface states of these systems, a fact that has implications for the study of surface topological order. Finally, we show that the strategy developed for the construction of three-dimensional topological phases generalizes readily to arbitrary dimensions, vastly expanding the existing landscape of coupled-wire theories. The conditions for both the stability and the breakdown of the topological classification of gapped ground states of noninteracting fermions, the tenfold way, in the presence of quartic fermion-fermion interactions are given for any dimension of space. This is achieved by encoding the effects of interactions on the boundary gapless modes in terms of boundary dynamical masses. Breakdown of the noninteracting topological classification occurs when the quantum nonlinear sigma models for the boundary dynamical masses favor quantum disordered phases. For the tenfold way, we find that (i) the noninteracting topological classification $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ is always stable, (ii) the noninteracting topological classification $\mathbb{Z}$ in even dimensions is always stable, (iii) the noninteracting topological classification $\mathbb{Z}$ in odd dimensions is unstable and reduces to $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{N}$ that can be identified explicitly for any dimension and any defining symmetries. We also apply our method to the three-dimensional topological crystalline insulator SnTe from the symmetry class AII$+R$, for which we establish the reduction $\mathbb{Z}\to\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{8}$ of the noninteracting topological classification., Comment: 29 pages

We construct the generic phase diagrams encoding the topologically distinct localized and delocalized phases of noninteracting fermionic quasiparticles for any symmetry class from the tenfold way in one, two, and three dimensions. To this end, we start from a massive Dirac Hamiltonian perturbed by a generic disorder for any dimension of space and for any one of the ten symmetry classes from the tenfold way. The physics of Anderson localization is then encoded by a two-dimensional phase diagram that we deduce from the topology of the space of normalized Dirac masses. This approach agrees with previously known results and gives an alternative explanation for the even-odd effect in the one-dimensional chiral symmetry classes. We also give a qualitative explanation for the Gade singularity and Griffiths effects in the density of states using the first homotopy group of the normalized Dirac masses in two dimensions. Finally, this approach is used to analyze the stability of massless Dirac fermions on the surface of three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators., Comment: 45 pages, 6 figures

We review various features of interacting Abelian topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions, placing particular emphasis on fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) and fractional topological insulators (FTIs). We analyze a hydrodynamical model of a polar fluid in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. We explore a spacetime symmetry -- volume preserving diffeomorphisms -- to construct an effective description of this fluid in terms of a topological BF theory. The two degrees of freedom of the BF theory are associated to the mass (charge) flows of the fluid and its polarization vorticities. We discuss the quantization of this hydrodynamic theory, which generically allows for fractionalized excitations. We propose an extension of the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra to (3+1)-dimensional spacetime by the inclusion of the vortex-density operator in addition to the usual charge density operator and show that the same algebra is obeyed by massive Dirac fermions that represent the bulk of $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulators in three-dimensional space., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure

We consider manifestations of topological order in time-reversal-symmetric fractional topological liquids (TRS-FTLs), defined on planar surfaces with holes. We derive a formula for the topological ground state degeneracy of such a TRS-FTL, which applies to cases where the edge modes on each boundary are fully gapped by appropriate backscattering terms. The degeneracy is exact in the limit of infinite system size, and is given by $q^{N^{\,}_{\mathrm{h}}}$, where $N^{\,}_{\mathrm{h}}$ is the number of holes and $q$ is an integer that is determined by the topological field theory. When the degeneracy is lifted by finite-size effects, the holes realize a system of $N^{\,}_{\mathrm{h}}$ coupled spin-like $q$-state degrees of freedom. In particular, we provide examples where $\mathbb Z^{\,}_{q}$ quantum clock models are realized on the low-energy manifold of states. We determine the effective field theory in (2+1)-dimensional space and time that captures the long wave length and low-energy limit of fermions hopping on a honeycomb lattice at half-filling when both a dominant intrinsic and subdominant Rashba spin-orbit couplings are present. This effective field theory for a Z_2 topological insulator (the Kane-Mele model at vanishing uniform and staggered chemical potentials) is a perturbation around a double Chern-Simons theory, with the U(1) gauge invariance associated to spin conservation explicitly broken due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. Frustrated systems exhibit remarkable properties due to the high degeneracy of their ground states. Stabilised by competing interactions, a rich diversity of typically nanometre-sized phase structures appear in polymer and colloidal systems, while the surface of ice pre-melts due to geometrically frustrated interactions. Atomic spin systems where magnetic interactions are frustrated by lattice geometry provide a fruitful source of emergent phenomena, such as fractionalised excitations analogous to magnetic monopoles. The degeneracy inherent in frustrated systems may prevail all the way down to absolute zero temperature, or it may be lifted by small perturbations or entropic effects. In the geometrically frustrated Ising--like magnet Ca3Co2O6, we follow the temporal and spatial evolution of nanoscale magnetic fluctuations firmly embedded inside the spin--density--wave magnetic structure. These fluctuations are a signature of a competing ferrimagnetic phase with an incommensurability that is different from, but determined by the host. As the temperature is lowered, the fluctuations slow down into a super-paramagnetic regime of stable spatiotemporal nano-structures.

Crystalline topological insulators owe their topological character to the protection that certain boundary states acquire because of certain point-group symmetries. We first show that a Hermitian operator obeying supersymmetric quantum mechanisms (SUSY QM) delivers the entanglement spectrum. We then show that such an entanglement spectrum that is compatible with a certain point-group symmetry obeys a certain local spectral symmetry. The latter result is applied to the stability analysis of four fermionic non-interacting Hamiltonians, the last of which describes graphene with a Kekule distortion. A scheme is proposed to construct integer and fractional topological quantum states of fermions in two spatial dimensions. We devise models for such states by coupling wires of non-chiral Luttinger liquids of electrons, that are arranged in a periodic array. Which inter-wire couplings are allowed is dictated by symmetry and the compatibility criterion that they can simultaneously acquire a finite expectation value, opening a spectral gap between the ground state(s) and all excited states in the bulk. First, with these criteria at hand, we reproduce the tenfold classification table of integer topological insulators, where their stability against interactions becomes immediately transparent in the Luttinger liquid description. Second, we construct an example of a strongly interacting fermionic topological phase of matter with short-range entanglement that lies outside of the tenfold classification. Third, we expand the table to long-range entangled topological phases with intrinsic topological order and fractional excitations.

When deriving a formula for the Hall conductivity of interacting electrons in Phys. Rev. B 86, 165133, we have relied on an unjustified implicit assumption that a certain gauge choice could be made. Only under this condition would the formula follow. We study two models for spinless fermions featuring topologically non-trivial bands characterized by Chern numbers $C=\pm1$ at fractional filling. Using exact diagonalization, we show that, even for infinitely strong nearest-neighbor repulsion, the ground states of these models belong to the recently discovered class of quantum liquids called fractional Chern insulators (FCI). We thus establish that FCI states can arise even if interaction strengths are arbitrarily larger than the noninteracting band gap, going beyond the limits in which FCI states have been previously studied. The strong-coupling FCI states therefore depart from the usual isolated-band picture that parallels the fractional quantum Hall effect in Landau levels and demonstrate how a topologically ordered state can arise in a truly multiband system.

A two-dimensional spin-directed $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ network model is constructed that describes the combined effects of dimerization and disorder for the surface states of a weak three-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulator. The network model consists of helical edge states of two-dimensional layers of $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulators which are coupled by time-reversal symmetric interlayer tunneling. It is argued that, without dimerization of interlayer couplings, the network model has no insulating phase for any disorder strength. However, a sufficiently strong dimerization induces a transition from a metallic phase to an insulating phase. The critical exponent $\nu$ for the diverging localization length at metal-insulator transition points is obtained by finite-size scaling analysis of numerical data from simulations of this network model. Single-particle states in electronic Bloch bands form a Riemannian manifold whose geometric properties are described by two gauge invariant tensors, one being symmetric the other being antisymmetric, that can be combined into the so-called Fubini-Study metric tensor of the projective Hilbert space. The latter directly controls the Hall conductivity. Here we show that the symmetric part of the Fubini-Study metric tensor also has measurable consequences by demonstrating that it enters the current noise spectrum. In particular, we show that a non-vanishing equilibrium current noise spectrum at zero temperature is unavoidable whenever Wannier states have non-zero minimum spread, the latter being quantifiable by the symmetric part of the Fubini-Study metric tensor. We illustrate our results by three examples: (1) atomic layers of hexagonal boron nitride, (2) graphene, and (3) the surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators when gaped by magnetic dopants., Comment: 4+ pages, 1 figure

The magnetic translation algebra plays an important role in the quantum Hall effect. Murthy and Shankar, arXiv:1207.2133, have shown how to realize this algebra using fermionic bilinears defined on a two-dimensional square lattice. We show that, in any dimension $d$, it is always possible to close the magnetic translation algebra using fermionic bilinears, whether in the continuum or on the lattice. We also show that these generators are complete in even, but not odd, dimensions, in the sense that any fermionic Hamiltonian in even dimensions that conserves particle number can be represented in terms of the generators of this algebra, whether or not time-reversal symmetry is broken. As an example, we reproduce the $f$-sum rule of interacting electrons at vanishing magnetic field using this representation. We also show that interactions can significantly change the bare bandwidth of lattice Hamiltonians when represented in terms of the generators of the magnetic translation algebra., Comment: 14 pages

We construct a two-band lattice model whose bands can carry the Chern numbers C=0,pm1,pm2. By means of numerical exact diagonalization, we show that the most favorable situation that selects fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) is not necessarily the one that mimics Landau levels, namely a flat band with Chern number 1. First, we find that the gap, measured in units of the on-site electron-electron repulsion, can increase by almost two orders of magnitude when the bands are flat and carry a Chern number C=2 instead of C=1. Second, we show that giving a width to the bands can help to stabilize a FCI. Finally, we put forward a tool to characterize the real-space density profile of the ground state that is useful to distinguish FCI from other competing phases of matter supporting charge density waves or phase separation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We generalize the noncommutative relations obeyed by the guiding centers in the two-dimensional quantum Hall effect to those obeyed by the projected position operators in three-dimensional (3D) topological band insulators. The noncommutativity in 3D space is tied to the integral over the 3D Brillouin zone of a Chern-Simons invariant in momentum-space. We provide an example of a model on the cubic lattice for which the chiral symmetry guarantees a macroscopic number of zero-energy modes that form a perfectly flat band. This lattice model realizes a chiral 3D noncommutative geometry. Finally, we find conditions on the density-density structure factors that lead to a gapped 3D fractional chiral topological insulator within Feynman's single-mode approximation., Comment: 41 pages, 3 figures

Anderson localization is studied for two flavors of massless Dirac fermions in 2D space perturbed by static disorder that is invariant under a chiral symmetry (chS) and a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) operation which, when squared, is equal either to plus or minus the identity. The former TRS (symmetry class BDI) can for example be realized when the Dirac fermions emerge from spinless fermions hopping on a 2D lattice with a linear energy dispersion such as the honeycomb lattice (graphene) or the square lattice with $\pi$-flux per plaquette. The latter TRS is realized by the surface states of 3D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-topological band insulators in symmetry class CII. In the phase diagram parametrized by the disorder strengths, there is an infrared stable line of critical points for both symmetry classes BDI and CII. Here we discuss a "global phase diagram" in which disordered Dirac fermion systems in all three chiral symmetry classes, AIII, CII, and BDI, occur in 4 quadrants, sharing one corner which represents the clean Dirac fermion limit. This phase diagram also includes symmetry classes AII [e.g., appearing at the surface of a disordered 3D $\mathbb{Z}_2$-topological band insulator in the spin-orbit (symplectic) symmetry class] and D (e.g., the random bond Ising model in two dimensions) as boundaries separating regions of the phase diagram belonging to the three chS classes AIII, BDI, and CII. Moreover, we argue that physics of Anderson localization in the CII phase can be presented in terms of a non-linear-sigma model (NLsM) with a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-topological term. We thereby complete the derivation of topological or Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten terms in the NLsM description of disordered fermionic models in all 10 symmetry classes relevant to Anderson localization in two spatial dimensions., Comment: 28 pages

The quintessential two-dimensional lattice model that describes the competition between the kinetic energy of electrons and their short-range repulsive interactions is the repulsive Hubbard model. We study a time-reversal symmetric variant of the repulsive Hubbard model defined on a planar lattice: Whereas the interaction is unchanged, any fully occupied band supports a quantized spin Hall effect. We show that at 1/2 filling of this band, the ground state develops spontaneously and simultaneously Ising ferromagnetic long-range order and a quantized charge Hall effect when the interaction is sufficiently strong. We ponder on the possible practical applications, beyond metrology, that the quantized charge Hall effect might have if it could be realized at high temperatures and without external magnetic fields in strongly correlated materials., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We provide an effective description of fractional topological insulators that include the fractional quantum spin Hall effect by considering the time-reversal symmetric pendant to the topological quantum field theories that encode the Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids. We explain the hierarchical construction of such a theory and establish for it a bulk-edge correspondence by deriving the equivalent edge theory for chiral bosonic fields. Further, we compute the Fermi-Bose correlation functions of the edge theory and provide representative ground state wave functions for systems described by the bulk theory., Comment: 14 pages

We present a class of time-reversal-symmetric fractional topological liquid states in two dimensions that support fractionalized excitations. These are incompressible liquids made of electrons, for which the charge Hall conductance vanishes and the spin Hall conductance needs not be quantized. We then analyze the stability of edge states in these two-dimensional topological fluids against localization by disorder. We find a Z_2 stability criterion for whether or not there exists a Kramers pair of edge modes that is robust against disorder. We also introduce an interacting electronic two-dimensional lattice model based on partially filled flattened bands of a Z_2 topological band insulator, which we study using numerical exact diagonalization. We show evidence for instances of the fractional topological liquid phase as well as for a time-reversal symmetry broken phase with a quantized (charge) Hall conductance in the phase diagram for this model., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures
