1. Multi-index evaluation of fish habitat in a cascaded hydropower reservoir of the Yangtze River, China

Abstract

Cascaded hydropower development in rivers has a greater negative impact on native fish than a single hydropower station. The effectiveness of commonly used measures to restore fish resources, such as ecological discharges, depends largely on reliable assessments of habitat quality. In this study, we developed a synthesized habitat quality index (SHQI) by combining the habitat suitability index (HSI) and habitat fragmentation indices to evaluate the fish habitat in the Longkaikou (LKK) reservoir between the Jinanqiao (JAQ) and LKK dams in the upper Yangtze River. We coupled a 2-dimensional physical habitat model and a fuzzy-logic habitat suitability model for spawning and juvenile Coreius guichenoti, an Endangered fish endemic to the Jinsha River basin. The impact of the JAQ reservoir flow and the impoundment level of the LKK reservoir were considered to analyze variation in habitat quality. The results revealed that habitat suitability and fragment conditions were, to some extent, spatially inconsistent. The SHQI suggested lentic areas could benefit juvenile fish more than lotic zones with higher quality but less connectivity. A higher impounded level of the LKK reservoir may be more favorable for juvenile fish in the lentic area. Only the lotic area was suitable for fish spawning, and a lower discharge from the JAQ reservoir and lower impounded level of the LKK reservoir could be more beneficial, with optimal values of 560 m3 s-1 and 1294 m, respectively. This study proposes a comprehensive assessment method for habitat quality that could provide scientific support for the conservation of fish resources and populations in cascaded hydropower developments.

2. Examining Essential Factors on Student Performance and Satisfaction in Learning Business Analytics

Abstract

With businesses increasingly prioritizing data-driven decision making, the demand for business analysts is high and expected to grow. In response, many universities and institutions have developed courses and programs related to business analytics to prepare more graduates for careers in this field. Business analytics programs and educators consistently strive to achieve a high level of student learning success, ensuring competence in working in the business analytics field after graduation. In this study, we aim to examine key factors influencing student learning in business analytics, focusing on performance expectancy and satisfaction. We examined specific factors, including personal interest, career relevance expectancy, learning effort, and perceived course structure effectiveness, from perspectives related to both students and instructors. A research model was developed and empirically tested. The results showed that all factors significantly influenced both perceived academic performance and learning satisfaction. Additionally, personal interest and career relevance expectancy could significantly impact learning effort.

3. Online Teaching and Learning at Chinese Universities during COVID-19: Insiders' Perspectives

Abstract

During attempts to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic in China, higher education programs shifted their traditional educational models to online models. This paper aimed to explore how Chinese universities organized online teaching and learning during the pandemic. It investigated the factors affecting the implementation of online teaching and provided policy recommendations for improving the quality of education in the post-pandemic period. The primary data for this study came from in-depth interviews with nine students and five teaching and administrative staff at eight major universities in mainland China. Literature was obtained in both English and Chinese from January 2020 to September 2021. Peer-reviewed journals, policy reports, and university documents regarding online education in Chinese universities were reviewed, and their challenges and countermeasures were investigated. The paper found that the implementation of online education was affected by various sources, including technologies, teachers' teaching skills, network information literacy, and students' learning motivations and self-directed learning skills. Based on the insiders' views, the paper suggested that to promote the quality of online education in the post-COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutes and programs could develop their infrastructure construction, improve teachers' quality of teaching, and focus on students' learning motivations.

4. An Exploration of Agency Enactment in E-Portfolio Learning Co-Design

Abstract

Although research has always related e-portfolios to self-regulated learning, recently agency, which includes individual, relational, and contextual domains, has also been highlighted. Likewise, agency has been explored in technological environments that support collaborative and co-design learning processes. This study, investigating the enactment of student agency within e-portfolio learning co-design with 68 secondary students in Hong Kong, focuses on how students perceive their agency within a co-design e-portfolio learning framework, which was coined as the Co-PIRS model in previous stages of research. With descriptive aims, a mixed research methodology was designed using quantitative and qualitative data collection instruments. Among the findings, it is argued that students report a greater awareness of agency, characterized by competence beliefs (individual domain) in the showcase phase of e-portfolios, peer learning (relational domain), and the opportunities to make choices (contextual domain) in the implementation phase. The study also reveals students' positive attitudes towards reflection, which suggests the suitability of structuring collaboration in the co-design approach. These insights serve as a foundation for implementing e-portfolio co-design frameworks to empower students' agency and provide educators with guidance in Secondary Education and beyond. 5. China's Policy Actions to Lead Teacher Development with Evaluation Reform

Abstract

Purpose: This study introduces a policy with great strategic significance and far-reaching impact by analyzing the background, measures, and future development trends of teacher evaluation reform in China. Design/Approach/Methods: This study primarily conducts a policy text analysis of the section on teacher evaluation of the "Overall Plan for Deepening the Reform of Educational Evaluation in the New Era". Findings: The "Overall Plan for Deepening the Reform of Educational Evaluation in the New Era" was drafted to enhance the quality of Chinese teachers and address many problems in teacher evaluation. It comprised four sections: teachers' professional ethics, teaching effectiveness, evaluation models and methods, and honorary titles. The policy has distinctive features such as the high status and authority of the issuing body, a holistic and systematic nature, and an orientation toward practical issues. This article proposes three major policy foresights: promoting implementation through the force of political trends, giving schools autonomy in teacher evaluations, and implementing progressive reforms. Originality/Value: This study conducted a specialist analysis of the policy in combination with the real scenario and institutional environment of Chinese teacher evaluation, which could encourage international peers to better understand Chinese teacher evaluation policies and promote policy learning and dissemination internationally.

Abstract

Introduction Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a powerful risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), conferring a greater relative risk in women than men. We sought to examine sex differences in cardiometabolic risk factors and management in the contemporary cohort represented by the Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE).Research design and methods GRADE enrolled 5047 participants (1837 women, 3210 men) with T2DM on metformin monotherapy at baseline. The current report is a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected July 2013 to August 2017.Results Compared with men, women had a higher mean body mass index (BMI), greater prevalence of severe obesity (BMI≥40 kg/m2), higher mean LDL cholesterol, greater prevalence of low HDL cholesterol, and were less likely to receive statin treatment and achieve target LDL, with a generally greater prevalence of these risk factors in younger women. Women with hypertension were equally likely to achieve blood pressure targets as men; however, women were less likely to receive ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers. Women were more likely to be divorced, separated or widowed, and had fewer years of education and lower incomes.Conclusions This contemporary cohort demonstrates that women with T2DM continue to have a greater burden of cardiometabolic and socioeconomic risk factors than men, particularly younger women. Attention to these persisting disparities is needed to reduce the burden of CVD in women.Trial registration number ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01794143)

7. MultiCounter: Multiple Action Agnostic Repetition Counting in Untrimmed Videos

Abstract

Multi-instance Repetitive Action Counting (MRAC) aims to estimate the number of repetitive actions performed by multiple instances in untrimmed videos, commonly found in human-centric domains like sports and exercise. In this paper, we propose MultiCounter, a fully end-to-end deep learning framework that enables simultaneous detection, tracking, and counting of repetitive actions of multiple human instances. Specifically, MultiCounter incorporates two novel modules: 1) mixed spatiotemporal interaction for efficient context correlation across consecutive frames, and 2) task-specific heads for accurate perception of periodic boundaries and generalization for action-agnostic human instances. We train MultiCounter on a synthetic dataset called MultiRep generated from annotated real-world videos. Experiments on the MultiRep dataset validate the fundamental challenge of MRAC tasks and showcase the superiority of our proposed model. Compared to ByteTrack+RepNet, a solution that combines an advanced tracker with a single repetition counter, MultiCounter substantially improves Period-mAP by 41.0%, reduces AvgMAE by 58.6%, and increases AvgOBO 1.48 times. This sets a new benchmark in the field of MRAC. Abstract

We present a study of the semileptonic decay $D^0\rightarrow \pi^-\pi^0e^{+}\nu_{e}$ using an $e^+e^-$ annihilation data sample of $7.93~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. The branching fraction of $D^0\to \rho(770)^-e^+\nu_e$ is measured to be $(1.439 \pm 0.033(\rm stat.) \pm 0.027(\rm syst.)) \times10^{-3}$, which is a factor 1.6 more precise than previous measurements. By performing an amplitude analysis, we measure the hadronic form-factor ratios of $D^0\to \rho(770)^-e^+\nu_e$ at $q^2=0$ assuming the single-pole-dominance parametrization: $r_{V}=V(0)/A_1(0)=1.548\pm0.079(\rm stat.)\pm0.041(\rm syst.)$ and $r_{2}=A_2(0)/A_1(0)=0.823\pm0.056(\rm stat.)\pm0.026(\rm syst.)$., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning remains an ongoing challenge for AI models, especially for geometry problems that require both linguistic and visual signals. As the vision encoders of most MLLMs are trained on natural scenes, they often struggle to understand geometric diagrams, performing no better in geometry problem solving than LLMs that only process text. This limitation is amplified by the lack of effective methods for representing geometric relationships. To address these issues, we introduce the Diagram Formalization Enhanced Geometry Problem Solver (DFE-GPS), a new framework that integrates visual features, geometric formal language, and natural language representations. We propose a novel synthetic data approach and create a large-scale geometric dataset, SynthGeo228K, annotated with both formal and natural language captions, designed to enhance the vision encoder for a better understanding of geometric structures. Our framework improves MLLMs' ability to process geometric diagrams and extends their application to open-ended tasks on the formalgeo7k dataset.

Abstract

The China Jinping underground Laboratory (CJPL) is an excellent location for studying solar, terrestrial, and supernova neutrinos due to its 2400-meter vertical rock overburden. Its unparalleled depth gives an opportunity to investigate the cosmic-ray muons with exceptionally high average energy at $\sim360$ GeV. This paper details a study of muon-related backgrounds based on 1178 days of data collected by the 1-ton prototype neutrino detector used for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE) since 2017. The apparent effects of detectors' finite size on the measured result are first discussed in detail. The analysis of 493 cosmic-ray muon candidates and $13.6\pm5.7$ cosmogenic neutron candidates, along with a thorough evaluation of detection efficiency and uncertainties, gives a muon flux of $(3.56\pm0.16_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm0.10_{\mathrm{syst.}})\times10^{-10}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s^{-1}}$ and a cosmogenic neutron yield of $(3.37\pm 1.41_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm 0.31_{\mathrm{sys.}}) \times 10^{-4}~\mathrm{\mu}^{-1} \mathrm{g}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{2}$ in LAB-based liquid scintillator.

11. A Hybrid Vectorized Merge Sort on ARM NEON

Abstract

Sorting algorithms are the most extensively researched topics in computer science and serve for numerous practical applications. Although various sorts have been proposed for efficiency, different architectures offer distinct flavors to the implementation of parallel sorting. In this paper, we propose a hybrid vectorized merge sort on ARM NEON, named NEON Merge Sort for short (NEON-MS). In detail, according to the granted register functions, we first identify the optimal register number to avoid the register-to-memory access, due to the write-back of intermediate outcomes. More importantly, following the generic merge sort framework that primarily uses sorting network for column sort and merging networks for three types of vectorized merge, we further improve their structures for high efficiency in an unified asymmetry way: 1) it makes the optimal sorting networks with few comparators become possible; 2) hybrid implementation of both serial and vectorized merges incurs the pipeline with merge instructions highly interleaved. Experiments on a single FT2000+ core show that NEON-MS is 3.8 and 2.1 times faster than std::sort and boost::block\_sort, respectively, on average. 12. On the Limited Generalization Capability of the Implicit Reward Model Induced by Direct Preference Optimization

Abstract

Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) is an effective approach for aligning language models to human preferences. Central to RLHF is learning a reward function for scoring human preferences. Two main approaches for learning a reward model are 1) training an EXplicit Reward Model (EXRM) as in RLHF, and 2) using an implicit reward learned from preference data through methods such as Direct Preference Optimization (DPO). Prior work has shown that the implicit reward model of DPO (denoted as DPORM) can approximate an EXRM in the limit. DPORM's effectiveness directly implies the optimality of the learned policy, and also has practical implication for LLM alignment methods including iterative DPO. However, it is unclear how well DPORM empirically matches the performance of EXRM. This work studies the accuracy at distinguishing preferred and rejected answers for both DPORM and EXRM. Our findings indicate that even though DPORM fits the training dataset comparably, it generalizes less effectively than EXRM, especially when the validation datasets contain distribution shifts. Across five out-of-distribution settings, DPORM has a mean drop in accuracy of 3% and a maximum drop of 7%. 13. CDM: A Reliable Metric for Fair and Accurate Formula Recognition Evaluation

Abstract

Formula recognition presents significant challenges due to the complicated structure and varied notation of mathematical expressions. Despite continuous advancements in formula recognition models, the evaluation metrics employed by these models, such as BLEU and Edit Distance, still exhibit notable limitations. They overlook the fact that the same formula has diverse representations and is highly sensitive to the distribution of training data, thereby causing the unfairness in formula recognition evaluation. To this end, we propose a Character Detection Matching (CDM) metric, ensuring the evaluation objectivity by designing a image-level rather than LaTex-level metric score. Specifically, CDM renders both the model-predicted LaTeX and the ground-truth LaTeX formulas into image-formatted formulas, then employs visual feature extraction and localization techniques for precise character-level matching, incorporating spatial position information. Such a spatially-aware and character-matching method offers a more accurate and equitable evaluation compared with previous BLEU and Edit Distance metrics that rely solely on text-based character matching. Experimentally, we evaluated various formula recognition models using CDM, BLEU, and ExpRate metrics. Abstract

Since the first instances of online education, where courses were uploaded to accessible and shared online platforms, this form of scaling the dissemination of human knowledge to reach a broader audience has sparked extensive discussion and widespread adoption. Recognizing that personalized learning still holds significant potential for improvement, new AI technologies have been continuously integrated into this learning format, resulting in a variety of educational AI applications such as educational recommendation and intelligent tutoring. The emergence of intelligence in large language models (LLMs) has allowed for these educational enhancements to be built upon a unified foundational model, enabling deeper integration. In this context, we propose MAIC (Massive AI-empowered Course), a new form of online education that leverages LLM-driven multi-agent systems to construct an AI-augmented classroom, balancing scalability with adaptivity. Beyond exploring the conceptual framework and technical innovations, we conduct preliminary experiments at Tsinghua University, one of China's leading universities. Drawing from over 100,000 learning records of more than 500 students, we obtain a series of valuable observations and initial analyses. This project will continue to evolve, ultimately aiming to establish a comprehensive open platform that supports and unifies research, technology, and applications in exploring the possibilities of online education in the era of large model AI. We envision this platform as a collaborative hub, bringing together educators, researchers, and innovators to collectively explore the future of AI-driven online education.

Abstract

Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. Abstract

VSG control has emerged as a crucial technology for integrating renewable energy sources. However, renewable energy have limited tolerance to overcurrent, necessitating the implementation of current limiting (CL)strategies to mitigate the overcurrent. The introduction of different CL strategies can have varying impacts on the system. While previous studies have discussed the effects of different CL strategies on the system, but they lack intuitive and explicit explanations. Meanwhile, previous CL strategy have failed to effectively ensure the stability of the system. In this paper, the Equal Proportional Area Criterion (EPAC) method is employed to intuitively explain how different CL strategies affect transient stability. Based on this, an effective current limiting strategy is proposed. Simulations are conducted in MATLAB/Simulink to validate the proposed strategy. 18. mPLUG-DocOwl2: High-resolution Compressing for OCR-free Multi-page Document Understanding

Abstract

Multimodel Large Language Models(MLLMs) have achieved promising OCR-free Document Understanding performance by increasing the supported resolution of document images. However, this comes at the cost of generating thousands of visual tokens for a single document image, leading to excessive GPU memory and slower inference times, particularly in multi-page document comprehension. In this work, to address these challenges, we propose a High-resolution DocCompressor module to compress each high-resolution document image into 324 tokens, guided by low-resolution global visual features. With this compression module, to strengthen multi-page document comprehension ability and balance both token efficiency and question-answering performance, we develop the DocOwl2 under a three-stage training framework: Single-image Pretraining, Multi-image Continue-pretraining, and Multi-task Finetuning. DocOwl2 sets a new state-of-the-art across multi-page document understanding benchmarks and reduces first token latency by more than 50%, demonstrating advanced capabilities in multi-page questioning answering, explanation with evidence pages, and cross-page structure understanding. Additionally, compared to single-image MLLMs trained on similar data, our DocOwl2 achieves comparable single-page understanding performance with less than 20% of the visual tokens. 19. Rethinking Improved Privacy-Utility Trade-off with Pre-existing Knowledge for DP Training

Abstract

Differential privacy (DP) provides a provable framework for protecting individuals by customizing a random mechanism over a privacy-sensitive dataset. Deep learning models have demonstrated privacy risks in model exposure as an established learning model unintentionally records membership-level privacy leakage. Differentially private stochastic gradient descent (DP- SGD) has been proposed to safeguard training individuals by adding random Gaussian noise to gradient updates in the backpropagation. Researchers identify that DP-SGD typically causes utility loss since the injected homogeneous noise alters the gradient updates calculated at each iteration. Namely, all elements in the gradient are contaminated regardless of their importance in updating model parameters. In this work, we argue that the utility loss mainly results from the homogeneity of injected noise. Consequently, we propose a generic differential privacy framework with heterogeneous noise (DP-Hero) by defining a heterogeneous random mechanism to abstract its property. The insight of DP-Hero is to leverage the knowledge encoded in the previously trained model to guide the subsequent allocation of noise heterogeneity, thereby leveraging the statistical perturbation and achieving enhanced utility. Atop DP-Hero, we instantiate a heterogeneous version of DP-SGD, where the noise injected into gradients is heterogeneous and guided by prior-established model parameters. We conduct comprehensive experiments to verify and explain the effectiveness of the proposed DP-Hero, showing improved training accuracy compared with state-of-the-art works. Abstract

It is very important to detect traffic signs efficiently and accurately in autonomous driving systems. However, the farther the distance, the smaller the traffic signs. Existing object detection algorithms can hardly detect these small scaled signs.In addition, the performance of embedded devices on vehicles limits the scale of detection models.To address these challenges, a YOLO PPA based traffic sign detection algorithm is proposed in this paper.The experimental results on the GTSDB dataset show that compared to the original YOLO, the proposed method improves inference efficiency by 11.2%. The mAP 50 is also improved by 93.2%, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed YOLO PPA.

Abstract

Spatial audio signal enhancement aims to reduce interfering source contributions while preserving the desired sound field with its spatial cues intact. Existing methods generally rely on impractical assumptions (e.g. no reverberation or accurate estimations of impractical information) or have limited applicability. This paper presents a spherical harmonic (SH)-domain minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR)-based spatial signal enhancer using Relative Harmonic Coefficients (ReHCs) to extract clean SH coefficients from noisy ones in reverberant environments. A simulation study shows the proposed method achieves lower estimation error, higher speech-distortion-ratio (SDR), and comparable noise reduction (NR) within the sweet area in a reverberant environment, compared to a beamforming-and-projection method as the baseline.

22. No Man is an Island: Towards Fully Automatic Programming by Code Search, Code Generation and Program Repair

Abstract

Automatic programming attempts to minimize human intervention in the generation of executable code, and has been a long-standing challenge in the software engineering community. To advance automatic programming, researchers are focusing on three primary directions: (1) code search that reuses existing code snippets from external databases; (2) code generation that produces new code snippets from natural language; and (3) program repair that refines existing code snippets by fixing detected bugs. Despite significant advancements, the effectiveness of state-of-the-art techniques is still limited, such as the usability of searched code and the correctness of generated code. Motivated by the real-world programming process, where developers usually use various external tools to aid their coding processes, such as code search engines and code testing tools, in this work, we propose \toolname{}, an automatic programming framework that leverages recent large language models (LLMs) to integrate the three research areas to address their inherent limitations. In particular, our framework first leverages different code search strategies to retrieve similar code snippets, which are then used to further guide the code generation process of LLMs. Our framework further validates the quality of generated code by compilers and test cases, and constructs repair prompts to query LLMs for generating correct patches. We conduct preliminary experiments to demonstrate the potential of our framework, \eg helping CodeLlama solve 267 programming problems with an improvement of 62.53\%. As a generic framework, \toolname{} can integrate various code search, generation, and repair tools, combining these three research areas together for the first time. More importantly, it demonstrates the potential of using traditional SE tools to enhance the usability of LLMs in automatic programming.

23. A Stochastic Approach to Reconstructing the Speed of Light in Cosmology

Abstract

The Varying Speed of Light (VSL) model describes how the speed of light in a vacuum changes with cosmological redshift. Despite numerous models, there is little observational evidence for this variation. While the speed of light can be accurately measured by physical means, cosmological methods are rarely used. Previous studies quantified the speed of light at specific redshifts using Gaussian processes and reconstructed the redshift-dependent function $c(z)$. It is crucial to quantify the speed of light across varying redshifts. We use the latest data on angular diameter distances $D_A(z)$ and Hubble parameters $H(z)$ from baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and cosmic chronometer measurements in the redshift interval $z\in[0.07,1.965]$. The speed of light $c(z)$ is determined using Gaussian and deep Gaussian processes to reconstruct $H(z)$, $D_A(z)$, and $D^{\prime}_A(z)$. Furthermore, we conduct comparisons across three distinct models, encompassing two renowned VSL models. We get the result of the parameters constraints in the models (1) for the ``$c$-c" model, $c_0=29492.6 \pm^{6.2}_{5.3} \mathrm{~km} \mathrm{~s}^{-1}$. (2) For the ``$c$-cl" model, $c_0=29665.5 \pm^{11.2}_{11.4}\mathrm{~km} \mathrm{~s}^{-1}$ and $n=0.05535 \pm^{0.00008}_{0.00007}$. (3) For the ``$c$-CPL" model, $c_0=29555.7 \pm^{13.3}_{13.2} \mathrm{~km} \mathrm{~s}^{-1}$ and $n=-0.0607 \pm 0.0001$. Based on our findings, it may be inferred that Barrow's classical VSL model is not a suitable fit for our data. In contrast, the widely recognized Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) VSL model, under some circumstances, as well as the universal ``c is constant" model, demonstrate a satisfactory ability to account for our findings., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. Abstract

Multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs) are prevalent in machine learning, with applications in multi-task learning, learning under fairness or robustness constraints, etc. Instead of reducing multiple objective functions into a scalar objective, MOPs aim to optimize for the so-called Pareto optimality or Pareto set learning, which involves optimizing more than one objective function simultaneously, over models with millions of parameters. Existing benchmark libraries for MOPs mainly focus on evolutionary algorithms, most of which are zeroth-order methods that do not effectively utilize higher-order information from objectives and cannot scale to large-scale models with millions of parameters. In light of the above gap, this paper introduces LibMOON, the first multiobjective optimization library that supports state-of-the-art gradient-based methods, provides a fair benchmark, and is open-sourced for the community.

Abstract

Advancements in LLMs have recently unveiled challenges tied to computational efficiency and continual scalability due to their requirements of huge parameters, making the applications and evolution of these models on devices with limited computation resources and scenarios requiring various abilities increasingly cumbersome. Inspired by modularity within the human brain, there is a growing tendency to decompose LLMs into numerous functional modules, allowing for inference with part of modules and dynamic assembly of modules to tackle complex tasks, such as mixture-of-experts. To highlight the inherent efficiency and composability of the modular approach, we coin the term brick to represent each functional module, designating the modularized structure as configurable foundation models. In this paper, we offer a comprehensive overview and investigation of the construction, utilization, and limitation of configurable foundation models. We first formalize modules into emergent bricks - functional neuron partitions that emerge during the pre-training phase, and customized bricks - bricks constructed via additional post-training to improve the capabilities and knowledge of LLMs. Based on diverse functional bricks, we further present four brick-oriented operations: retrieval and routing, merging, updating, and growing. These operations allow for dynamic configuration of LLMs based on instructions to handle complex tasks. To verify our perspective, we conduct an empirical analysis on widely-used LLMs. We find that the FFN layers follow modular patterns with functional specialization of neurons and functional neuron partitions. Finally, we highlight several open issues and directions for future research. Overall, this paper aims to offer a fresh modular perspective on existing LLM research and inspire the future creation of more efficient and scalable foundational models.

Abstract

Progress in gravitational-wave astronomy depends upon having sensitive detectors with good data quality. Since the end of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA third Observing run in March 2020, detector-characterization efforts have lead to increased sensitivity of the detectors, swifter validation of gravitational-wave candidates and improved tools used for data-quality products. In this article, we discuss these efforts in detail and their impact on our ability to detect and study gravitational-waves. These include the multiple instrumental investigations that led to reduction in transient noise, along with the work to improve software tools used to examine the detectors data-quality. We end with a brief discussion on the role and requirements of detector characterization as the sensitivity of our detectors further improves in the future Observing runs., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

This paper introduces MMMU-Pro, a robust version of the Massive Multi-discipline Multimodal Understanding and Reasoning (MMMU) benchmark. MMMU-Pro rigorously assesses multimodal models' true understanding and reasoning capabilities through a three-step process based on MMMU: (1) filtering out questions answerable by text-only models, (2) augmenting candidate options, and (3) introducing a vision-only input setting where questions are embedded within images. This setting challenges AI to truly "see" and "read" simultaneously, testing a fundamental human cognitive skill of seamlessly integrating visual and textual information. Results show that model performance is substantially lower on MMMU-Pro than on MMMU, ranging from 16.8% to 26.9% across models. We explore the impact of OCR prompts and Chain of Thought (CoT) reasoning, finding that OCR prompts have minimal effect while CoT generally improves performance. MMMU-Pro provides a more rigorous evaluation tool, closely mimicking real-world scenarios and offering valuable directions for future research in multimodal AI.

Abstract

A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b\to\it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-(h=\pi, K)$, followed by $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{\Lambda} h^+$ with $\it{\Lambda}\to \it{p} \pi^-$ or $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{p}\it{K}^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 $\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \to \it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $\alpha, \beta$ and $\gamma$ are obtained for $\it{\Lambda}_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\it{\Lambda}$ decay is provided. 30. Few-shot Multi-Task Learning of Linear Invariant Features with Meta Subspace Pursuit

Abstract

Data scarcity poses a serious threat to modern machine learning and artificial intelligence, as their practical success typically relies on the availability of big datasets. One effective strategy to mitigate the issue of insufficient data is to first harness information from other data sources possessing certain similarities in the study design stage, and then employ the multi-task or meta learning framework in the analysis stage. In this paper, we focus on multi-task (or multi-source) linear models whose coefficients across tasks share an invariant low-rank component, a popular structural assumption considered in the recent multi-task or meta learning literature. Under this assumption, we propose a new algorithm, called Meta Subspace Pursuit (abbreviated as Meta-SP), that provably learns this invariant subspace shared by different tasks. Under this stylized setup for multi-task or meta learning, we establish both the algorithmic and statistical guarantees of the proposed method. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted, comparing Meta-SP against several competing methods, including popular, off-the-shelf model-agnostic meta learning algorithms such as ANIL. These experiments demonstrate that Meta-SP achieves superior performance over the competing methods in various aspects.

Abstract

In the effective field theory, the massless dark photon $\gamma'$ can only couple with the Standard Model particle through operators of dimension higher than four, thereby offering a high sensitivity to the new physics energy scale. Using $7.9~\rm{fb^{-1}}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the effective flavor-changing neutral current coupling of $cu\gamma'$ in $D^0\to\omega\gamma'$ and $D^0\to\gamma\gamma'$ processes to search for the massless dark photon. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the massless dark photon branching fraction are set to be $1.1\times10^{-5}$ and $2.0\times10^{-6}$ for $D^0\to\omega\gamma'$ and $D^0\to\gamma\gamma'$, respectively. These results provide the most stringent constraint on the new physics energy scale associated with $cu\gamma'$ coupling in the world, with the new physics energy scale related parameter $|\mathbb{C}|^2+|\mathbb{C}_5|^2<8.2\times10^{-17}~\rm{GeV}^{-2}$ at the 90% confidence level, playing a unique role in the dark sector search with the charm sector., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) holds significant importance in clinical diagnosis and neuroscience research. However, conventional model-based fitting methods often suffer from sensitivity to noise, leading to decreased accuracy in estimating DTI parameters. While traditional data-driven deep learning methods have shown potential in terms of accuracy and efficiency, their limited generalization to out-of-training-distribution data impedes their broader application due to the diverse scan protocols used across centers, scanners, and studies. This work aims to tackle these challenges and promote the use of DTI by introducing a data-driven optimization-based method termed DoDTI. DoDTI combines the weighted linear least squares fitting algorithm and regularization by denoising technique. The former fits DW images from diverse acquisition settings into diffusion tensor field, while the latter applies a deep learning-based denoiser to regularize the diffusion tensor field instead of the DW images, which is free from the limitation of fixed-channel assignment of the network. The optimization object is solved using the alternating direction method of multipliers and then unrolled to construct a deep neural network, leveraging a data-driven strategy to learn network parameters. Extensive validation experiments are conducted utilizing both internally simulated datasets and externally obtained in-vivo datasets. The results, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative analyses, showcase that the proposed method attains state-of-the-art performance in DTI parameter estimation. Notably, it demonstrates superior generalization, accuracy, and efficiency, rendering it highly reliable for widespread application in the field.

Abstract

Recent empirical studies have demonstrated that diffusion models can effectively learn the image distribution and generate new samples. Remarkably, these models can achieve this even with a small number of training samples despite a large image dimension, circumventing the curse of dimensionality. In this work, we provide theoretical insights into this phenomenon by leveraging key empirical observations: (i) the low intrinsic dimensionality of image data, (ii) a union of manifold structure of image data, and (iii) the low-rank property of the denoising autoencoder in trained diffusion models. These observations motivate us to assume the underlying data distribution of image data as a mixture of low-rank Gaussians and to parameterize the denoising autoencoder as a low-rank model according to the score function of the assumed distribution. With these setups, we rigorously show that optimizing the training loss of diffusion models is equivalent to solving the canonical subspace clustering problem over the training samples. Based on this equivalence, we further show that the minimal number of samples required to learn the underlying distribution scales linearly with the intrinsic dimensions under the above data and model assumptions. This insight sheds light on why diffusion models can break the curse of dimensionality and exhibit the phase transition in learning distributions. Moreover, we empirically establish a correspondence between the subspaces and the semantic representations of image data, facilitating image editing. Abstract

With a great potential of improving the service fairness and quality for user equipments (UEs), cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) has been regarded as an emerging candidate for 6G network architectures. Under ideal assumptions, the coherent joint transmission (CJT) serving mode has been considered as an optimal option for cell-free mMIMO systems, since it can achieve coherent cooperation gain among the access points. However, when considering the limited fronthaul constraint in practice, the non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) serving mode is likely to outperform CJT, since the former requires much lower fronthaul resources. In other words, the performance excellence and worseness of single serving mode (CJT or NCJT) depends on the fronthaul capacity, and any single transmission mode cannot perfectly adapt the capacity limited fronthaul. To explore the performance potential of the cell-free mMIMO system with limited fronthauls by harnessing the merits of CJT and NCJT, we propose a CJT-NCJT hybrid serving mode framework, in which UEs are allocated to operate on CJT or NCJT serving mode. To improve the sum-rate of the system with low complexity, we first propose a probability-based random serving mode allocation scheme. With a given serving mode, a successive convex approximation-based power allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the system's sum-rate. Abstract

Fuzzing is an important dynamic program analysis technique designed for finding vulnerabilities in complex software. Fuzzing involves presenting a target program with crafted malicious input to cause crashes, buffer overflows, memory errors, and exceptions. Crafting malicious inputs in an efficient manner is a difficult open problem and the best approaches often apply uniform random mutations to pre-existing valid inputs. In this work, we propose to adopt fine-tuned large language models (FuzzCoder) to learn patterns in the input files from successful attacks to guide future fuzzing explorations. Specifically, we develop a framework to leverage the code LLMs to guide the mutation process of inputs in fuzzing. The mutation process is formulated as the sequence-to-sequence modeling, where LLM receives a sequence of bytes and then outputs the mutated byte sequence. FuzzCoder is fine-tuned on the created instruction dataset (Fuzz-Instruct), where the successful fuzzing history is collected from the heuristic fuzzing tool. FuzzCoder can predict mutation locations and strategies locations in input files to trigger abnormal behaviors of the program. In the domain of Human-Computer Interaction, focus groups represent a widely utilised yet resource-intensive methodology, often demanding the expertise of skilled moderators and meticulous preparatory efforts. This study introduces the ``Focus Agent,'' a Large Language Model (LLM) powered framework that simulates both the focus group (for data collection) and acts as a moderator in a focus group setting with human participants. To assess the data quality derived from the Focus Agent, we ran five focus group sessions with a total of 23 human participants as well as deploying the Focus Agent to simulate these discussions with AI participants. Quantitative analysis indicates that Focus Agent can generate opinions similar to those of human participants. 37. GeoBEV: Learning Geometric BEV Representation for Multi-view 3D Object Detection

Abstract

Bird's-Eye-View (BEV) representation has emerged as a mainstream paradigm for multi-view 3D object detection, demonstrating impressive perceptual capabilities. However, existing methods overlook the geometric quality of BEV representation, leaving it in a low-resolution state and failing to restore the authentic geometric information of the scene. In this paper, we identify the reasons why previous approaches are constrained by low BEV representation resolution and propose Radial-Cartesian BEV Sampling (RC-Sampling), enabling efficient generation of high-resolution dense BEV representations without the need for complex operators. Additionally, we design a novel In-Box Label to substitute the traditional depth label generated from the LiDAR points. This label reflects the actual geometric structure of objects rather than just their surfaces, injecting real-world geometric information into the BEV representation. Furthermore, in conjunction with the In-Box Label, a Centroid-Aware Inner Loss (CAI Loss) is developed to capture the fine-grained inner geometric structure of objects. Finally, we integrate the aforementioned modules into a novel multi-view 3D object detection framework, dubbed GeoBEV. Extensive experiments on the nuScenes dataset exhibit that GeoBEV achieves state-of-the-art performance, highlighting its effectiveness.

38. Mahalanobis Distance-based Multi-view Optimal Transport for Multi-view Crowd Localization

Abstract

Multi-view crowd localization predicts the ground locations of all people in the scene. Typical methods usually estimate the crowd density maps on the ground plane first, and then obtain the crowd locations. However, the performance of existing methods is limited by the ambiguity of the density maps in crowded areas, where local peaks can be smoothed away. To mitigate the weakness of density map supervision, optimal transport-based point supervision methods have been proposed in the single-image crowd localization tasks, but have not been explored for multi-view crowd localization yet. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel Mahalanobis distance-based multi-view optimal transport (M-MVOT) loss specifically designed for multi-view crowd localization. First, we replace the Euclidean-based transport cost with the Mahalanobis distance, which defines elliptical iso-contours in the cost function whose long-axis and short-axis directions are guided by the view ray direction. Second, the object-to-camera distance in each view is used to adjust the optimal transport cost of each location further, where the wrong predictions far away from the camera are more heavily penalized. Finally, we propose a strategy to consider all the input camera views in the model loss (M-MVOT) by computing the optimal transport cost for each ground-truth point based on its closest camera. Experiments demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method over density map-based or common Euclidean distance-based optimal transport loss on several multi-view crowd localization datasets. Abstract

Charts are widely used for data visualization across various fields, including education, research, and business. Chart Question Answering (CQA) is an emerging task focused on the automatic interpretation and reasoning of data presented in charts. However, chart images are inherently difficult to interpret, and chart-related questions often involve complex logical and numerical reasoning, which hinders the performance of existing models. This paper introduces VProChart, a novel framework designed to address these challenges in CQA by integrating a lightweight Visual Perception Alignment Agent (VPAgent) and a Programmatic Solution Reasoning approach. VPAgent aligns and models chart elements based on principles of human visual perception, enhancing the understanding of chart context. The Programmatic Solution Reasoning approach leverages large language models (LLMs) to transform natural language reasoning questions into structured solution programs, facilitating precise numerical and logical reasoning. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets such as ChartQA and PlotQA demonstrate that VProChart significantly outperforms existing methods, highlighting its capability in understanding and reasoning with charts.

40. $S^2$NeRF: Privacy-preserving Training Framework for NeRF

Abstract

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have revolutionized 3D computer vision and graphics, facilitating novel view synthesis and influencing sectors like extended reality and e-commerce. However, NeRF's dependence on extensive data collection, including sensitive scene image data, introduces significant privacy risks when users upload this data for model training. To address this concern, we first propose SplitNeRF, a training framework that incorporates split learning (SL) techniques to enable privacy-preserving collaborative model training between clients and servers without sharing local data. Despite its benefits, we identify vulnerabilities in SplitNeRF by developing two attack methods, Surrogate Model Attack and Scene-aided Surrogate Model Attack, which exploit the shared gradient data and a few leaked scene images to reconstruct private scene information. To counter these threats, we introduce $S^2$NeRF, secure SplitNeRF that integrates effective defense mechanisms. By introducing decaying noise related to the gradient norm into the shared gradient information, $S^2$NeRF preserves privacy while maintaining a high utility of the NeRF model. 41. Interpreting and Improving Large Language Models in Arithmetic Calculation

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable potential across numerous applications and have shown an emergent ability to tackle complex reasoning tasks, such as mathematical computations. However, even for the simplest arithmetic calculations, the intrinsic mechanisms behind LLMs remain mysterious, making it challenging to ensure reliability. In this work, we delve into uncovering a specific mechanism by which LLMs execute calculations. Through comprehensive experiments, we find that LLMs frequently involve a small fraction (< 5%) of attention heads, which play a pivotal role in focusing on operands and operators during calculation processes. Subsequently, the information from these operands is processed through multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), progressively leading to the final solution. These pivotal heads/MLPs, though identified on a specific dataset, exhibit transferability across different datasets and even distinct tasks. This insight prompted us to investigate the potential benefits of selectively fine-tuning these essential heads/MLPs to boost the LLMs' computational performance. We empirically find that such precise tuning can yield notable enhancements on mathematical prowess, without compromising the performance on non-mathematical tasks. 42. Laser: Parameter-Efficient LLM Bi-Tuning for Sequential Recommendation with Collaborative Information

Sequential recommender systems are essential for discerning user preferences from historical interactions and facilitating targeted recommendations. Recent innovations employing Large Language Models (LLMs) have advanced the field by encoding item semantics, yet they often necessitate substantial parameter tuning and are resource-demanding. Moreover, these works fails to consider the diverse characteristics of different types of users and thus diminishes the recommendation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a parameter-efficient Large Language Model Bi-Tuning framework for sequential recommendation with collaborative information (Laser). Specifically, Bi-Tuning works by inserting trainable virtual tokens at both the prefix and suffix of the input sequence and freezing the LLM parameters, thus optimizing the LLM for the sequential recommendation. In our Laser, the prefix is utilized to incorporate user-item collaborative information and adapt the LLM to the recommendation task, while the suffix converts the output embeddings of the LLM from the language space to the recommendation space for the follow-up item recommendation. Furthermore, to capture the characteristics of different types of users when integrating the collaborative information via the prefix, we introduce M-Former, a lightweight MoE-based querying transformer that uses a set of query experts to integrate diverse user-specific collaborative information encoded by frozen ID-based sequential recommender systems, significantly improving the accuracy of recommendations. 43. Heisenberg-limit spin squeezing with spin Bogoliubov Hamiltonian

Abstract

It is well established that the optimal spin squeezing under a one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian follows a scaling law of $J^{-2/3}$ for $J$ interacting atoms after a quench dynamics. Here we prove analytically and numerically that the spin squeezing of the ground state of the one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian actually reaches the Heisenberg limit $J^{-1}$. By constructing a bilinear Bogoliubov Hamiltonian with the raising and lowering spin operators, we exactly diagonalize the spin Bogoliubov Hamiltonian, which includes the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian as a limiting case. The ground state of the spin Bogoliubov Hamiltonian exhibits wonderful spin squeezing, which approaches to the Heisenberg limit in the case of the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian. It is possible to realize experimentally the spin squeezed ground state of the one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian in dipolar spinor condensates, ultracold atoms in optical lattices, spins in a cavity, or alkali atoms in a vapor cell.

Abstract

Measurements of B-mode polarization in the CMB sourced from primordial gravitational waves would provide information on the energy scale of inflation and its potential form. To achieve these goals, one must carefully characterize the Galactic foregrounds, which can be distinguished from the CMB by conducting measurements at multiple frequencies. BICEP Array is the latest-generation multi-frequency instrument of the BICEP/Keck program, which specifically targets degree-scale primordial B-modes in the CMB. In its final configuration, this telescope will consist of four small-aperture receivers, spanning frequency bands from 30 to 270 GHz. The 220/270 GHz receiver designed to characterize Galactic dust is currently undergoing commissioning at Stanford University and is scheduled to deploy to the South Pole during the 2024--2025 austral summer. Here, we will provide an overview of this high-frequency receiver and discuss the integration status and test results as it is being commissioned.

The effectiveness of long-context modeling is important for Large Language Models (LLMs) in various applications. Despite their potential, LLMs' efficacy in processing long context does not consistently meet expectations, posing significant challenges for efficient management of prolonged sequences in training. This difficulty is compounded by the scarcity of comprehensive and diverse training datasets suitable for long sequences, which stems from inherent length biases across different data sources, and the logistical complexities associated with massive data management for training in extended contexts. In this work, we introduce DataSculpt, a data construction framework designed to strategically augment the data architecture for extended-context training. Our thorough evaluations demonstrate DataSculpt's remarkable capacity to boost long-context training performance, achieving improvements including an 18.09% increase in retrieval augmentation, 21.23% in summarization, 21.27% in reading comprehension, and a 3.81% rise in code completion, all while preserving the models' overall proficiency with a 4.88% improvement.

46. Optimal regularity of subsonic steady-states solution of Euler-Poisson equations for semiconductors with sonic boundary

Abstract

In this paper, we study the optimal regularity of the stationary sonic-subsonic solution to the unipolar isothermal hydrodynamic model of semiconductors with sonic boundary. Applying the comparison principle and the energy estimate, we obtain the regularity of the sonic-subsonic solution as $C^{\frac{1}{2}}[0,1]\cap W^{1,p}(0,1)$ for any $p<2$, which is then proved to be optimal by analyzing the property of solution around the singular point on the sonic line, i.e., $\rho\notin C^\nu[0,1]$ for any $\nu>\frac{1}{2}$, and $\rho\notin W^{1,\kappa}(0,1)$ for any $\kappa\ge 2$. Furthermore, we explore the influence of the semiconductors effect on the singularity of solution at sonic points $x=1$ and $x=0$, that is, the solution always has strong singularity at sonic point $x=1$ for any relaxation time $\tau>0$, but, once the relaxation time is sufficiently large $\tau\gg 1$, then the sonic-subsonic steady-states possess the strong singularity at both sonic boundaries $x=0$ and $x=1$. We also show that the pure subsonic solution $\rho$ belongs to $W^{2,\infty}(0,1)$, which can be embedded into $C^{1,1}[0,1]$, and it is much better than the regularity of sonic-subsonic solutions.

47. Clutter Suppression, Time-Frequency Synchronization, and Sensing Parameter Association in Asynchronous Perceptive Vehicular Networks

Abstract

Significant challenges remain for realizing precise positioning and velocity estimation in perceptive vehicular networks (PVN) enabled by the emerging integrated sensing and communication technology. First, complicated wireless propagation environment generates undesired clutter, which degrades the vehicular sensing performance and increases the computational complexity. Second, in practical PVN, multiple types of parameters individually estimated are not well associated with specific vehicles, which may cause error propagation in multiple-vehicle positioning. Third, radio transceivers in a PVN are naturally asynchronous, which causes strong range and velocity ambiguity. To overcome these challenges, 1) we introduce a moving target indication based joint clutter suppression and sensing algorithm, and analyze its clutter-suppression performance and the Cramer-Rao lower bound of the paired range-velocity estimation upon using the proposed clutter suppression algorithm; 2) we design algorithms for associating individual direction-of-arrival estimates with the paired range-velocity estimates based on "domain transformation"; 3) we propose the first viable carrier frequency offset (CFO) and time offset (TO) estimation algorithm that supports passive vehicular sensing in non-line-of-sight environments. This algorithm treats the delay-Doppler spectrum of the signals reflected by static objects as an environment-specific "fingerprint spectrum", which is shown to exhibit a circular shift property upon changing the CFO and/or TO. Then, the CFO and TO are efficiently estimated by acquiring the number of circular shifts, and we also analyse the mean squared error performance of the proposed time-frequency synchronization algorithm. Abstract

Retrieved documents containing noise will hinder RAG from detecting answer clues and make the inference process slow and expensive. Therefore, context compression is necessary to enhance its accuracy and efficiency. Existing context compression methods use extractive or generative models to retain the most query-relevant sentences or apply the information bottleneck theory to preserve sufficient information. However, these methods may face issues such as over-compression or high computational costs. We observe that the retriever often ranks relevant documents at the top, but the exact number of documents needed to answer the query is uncertain due to the impact of query complexity and retrieval quality: complex queries like multi-hop questions may require retaining more documents than simpler queries, and a low-quality retrieval may need to rely on more documents to generate accurate outputs. Therefore, determining the minimum number of required documents (compression rate) is still a challenge for RAG. In this paper, we introduce AdaComp, a low-cost extractive context compression method that adaptively determines the compression rate based on both query complexity and retrieval quality. Specifically, we first annotate the minimum top-k documents necessary for the RAG system to answer the current query as the compression rate and then construct triplets of the query, retrieved documents, and its compression rate. Then, we use this triplet dataset to train a compression-rate predictor. 49. EvoChart: A Benchmark and a Self-Training Approach Towards Real-World Chart Understanding

Abstract

Chart understanding enables automated data analysis for humans, which requires models to achieve highly accurate visual comprehension. While existing Visual Language Models (VLMs) have shown progress in chart understanding, the lack of high-quality training data and comprehensive evaluation benchmarks hinders VLM chart comprehension. In this paper, we introduce EvoChart, a novel self-training method for generating synthetic chart data to enhance VLMs' capabilities in real-world chart comprehension. We also propose EvoChart-QA, a noval benchmark for measuring models' chart comprehension abilities in real-world scenarios. Specifically, EvoChart is a unique self-training data synthesis approach that simultaneously produces high-quality training corpus and a high-performance chart understanding model. EvoChart-QA consists of 650 distinct real-world charts collected from 140 different websites and 1,250 expert-curated questions that focus on chart understanding. Experimental results on various open-source and proprietary VLMs tested on EvoChart-QA demonstrate that even the best proprietary model, GPT-4o, achieves only 49.8% accuracy. Moreover, the EvoChart method significantly boosts the performance of open-source VLMs on real-world chart understanding tasks, achieving 54.2% accuracy on EvoChart-QA.

50. PR2: A Physics- and Photo-realistic Testbed for Embodied AI and Humanoid Robots

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a Physics-realistic and Photo-\underline{r}ealistic humanoid robot testbed, PR2, to facilitate collaborative research between Embodied Artificial Intelligence (Embodied AI) and robotics. PR2 offers high-quality scene rendering and robot dynamic simulation, enabling (i) the creation of diverse scenes using various digital assets, (ii) the integration of advanced perception or foundation models, and (iii) the implementation of planning and control algorithms for dynamic humanoid robot behaviors based on environmental feedback. The beta version of PR2 has been deployed for the simulation track of a nationwide full-size humanoid robot competition for college students, attracting 137 teams and over 400 participants within four months. This competition covered traditional tasks in bipedal walking, as well as novel challenges in loco-manipulation and language-instruction-based object search, marking a first for public college robotics competitions. A retrospective analysis of the competition suggests that future events should emphasize the integration of locomotion with manipulation and perception. By making the PR2 testbed publicly available at https://github.com/pr2-humanoid/PR2-Platform, we aim to further advance education and training in humanoid robotics.
