Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved efficient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to lightly ionizing particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits calculated using the optimum interval method on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than e/(3×10^{5}), as well as the strongest limits for charge ≤e/160, with a minimum vertical intensity of 1.36×10^{-7}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} at charge e/160. These results apply over a wide range of LIP masses (5  MeV/c^{2} to 100  TeV/c^{2}) and cover a wide range of βγ values (0.1-10^{6}), thus excluding nonrelativistic LIPs with βγ as small as 0.1 for the first time.

Abstract

We present limits on spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions using a 10.6 g Si athermal phonon detector with a baseline energy resolution of σ_{E}=3.86±0.04(stat)_{-0.00}^{+0.19}(syst)  eV. This exclusion analysis sets the most stringent dark matter-nucleon scattering cross-section limits achieved by a cryogenic detector for dark matter particle masses from 93 to 140  MeV/c^{2}, with a raw exposure of 9.9 g d acquired at an above-ground facility. This work illustrates the scientific potential of detectors with athermal phonon sensors with eV-scale energy resolution for future dark matter searches.

3. Performance Assessment of Composite Skirted Ground Reinforcement System in Liquefiable Ground Under Repeated Dynamic Loading Conditions

Abstract

Occurrence of earthquake generates both horizontal and vertical ground motions. In saturated sands, combination of generated ground motions and pore water pressures induces soil liquefaction. In this study, a composite skirted ground reinforcement system was developed to mitigate generation of pore water pressure in liquefiable soils and also to attenuate incoming ground motions to the foundation. The composite system contains Poly Urethane foam as an isolation barrier for ground motion attenuation with stone columns for improving both soil densification and drainage. The performance of this composite reinforcement system was evaluated under repeated acceleration loading conditions to estimate its efficiency. For testing, saturated ground model having 40% and 60% relative density was prepared and investigated with and without the composite reinforcement system. Test results showed that, the developed skirted ground reinforcement system effectively mitigates the interaction of incoming ground motions with the foundation and also improves the re-liquefaction resistance of soil compared to that of unreinforced ground.

5. Evaluation of Various Pedo-Transfer Functions for Developing Soil-Water Characteristic Curve of a Silty Soil

Abstract

This paper describes development of the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of a silty soil by measuring its matric suction _m, corresponding to different gravimetric water contents w. To achieve this, a field tensiometer and a dew point potentiameter (WP4) were employed. For this soil, the SWCC was determined indirectly using the estimation algorithms known as pedo-transfer functions (PTFs), which are based on volume-mass properties and the grain-size distribution characteristics, and are available in a commercial database SoilVision. In addition to this, experimental results were used for developing the SWCC of the soil, using various fitting functions cited in the literature and available in the database. An attempt has been made in this technical note to demonstrate the usefulness of these three methods for obtaining the SWCC of the silty soil. The study reveals that the PTFs developed previously to estimate SWCCs match very well with the experimental results.

Abstract

A draft proposal of a new Civil Code has been published in Hungary which, if enacted, will replace the present one that has existed since the socialist period. The social and economic changes that took place during the 1990s necessitated a comprehensive reform of the Civil Code and the draft proposal is the result of intensive work towards that end. This article focuses on a number of the contract law elements contained in the first draft of the proposed new Civil Code. The article deals specifically with the models of codification used in the draft, the rules concerning consumer contracts, the implementation of European directives, and it highlights several innovations utalised in the draft to address classical contract problems, including, for example, the fields of validity and breach of contract.

7. SLCO1B1and ABCB1variants synergistically influence the atorvastatin treatment response in south Indian coronary artery disease patients

Abstract

Introduction:Atorvastatin exhibits wide interindividual variability in treatment response, limiting the drug efficacy in coronary artery disease patients. Aim:To study the effect of genetic variants involved in atorvastatin transport/metabolism and correlate their lipid-lowering efficacy. Materials & methods:Genotyping was performed using 5′-hydrolysis probe method (n = 412), and the study evaluated the treatment response in 86 patients. Results:Significant reduction in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were observed in SLCO1B1-rs4149056, rs4363657 and ABCB1-rs1045642 genotypes. The combined genotypes of ABCB1and SLCO1B1showed a strong synergistic effect in reducing the total cholesterol and LDL-C. Diabetes and smoking were observed to influence the LDL-C reduction. Conclusion:The genetic variants of SLCO1B1and ABCB1predict the lipid-lowering efficacy of atorvastatin, and this may be useful in genotype-guided statin therapy for coronary artery disease patients.
