We report a case of dyspnea in a 71-year-old man who underwent heterotopic heart transplantation in 2003. At presentation, electrocardiography showed ventricular fibrillation of the native heart and then a progression to both donor and recipient hearts. Synchronized electrical cardioversion restored sinus rhythm and relieved the patient from his symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article offers some reflections on the relationship between complexity and norms, with specific reference to three masters of sociological thought: Parsons, Luhmann and Merton. Three different ideas of complexity and of the connections between complexity/norms and norms/social actor come out from this analysis. The implications of every position are commented by taking into account the scientific debate on the recent social and economic changes. In her work, the authoress claims that these changes demand the overcoming of the rules of market economy and the recovery of a new solidarity based on the concept of human being. The Autor holds that sociology may offer a substantial contribution in the analysis of food dii. orders. The articles clarifies the elements which could be developed by this approach. The argument is organized in three main sections: in the first one, a brief consideration of the way in which illness has been viewed in traditional as well as modern societies is offered; in the second one the way in which people have relation with food in contemporary world is considered; the last section is focussed on the role played by the family in the origin and treatment of anorexy. The author analyzes the position of the elderly in the preindustrial and industrial society, focussing on the institute of retirement. She describes the policy followed in the US and in several European countries, putting in evidence the necessity of a revision of a rigid retirement age and criticizing recent measures taken by the Italian government. The author recognizes that the extension of the working period could avoid social exclusion, but she also argues that retirement should be a free choice, though activity is not necessarily connected with work.
