Abstract: The performance of Hamamatsu 8" photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) of the type used in the SuperNEMO neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment (R5912-MOD), is investigated as a function of exposure to helium (He) gas. Two PMTs were monitored for over a year, one exposed to varying concentrations of He, and the other kept in standard atmospheric conditions as a control. Both PMTs were exposed to light signals generated by a Bi-207 radioactive source that provided consistent large input PMT signals similar to those that are typical of the SuperNEMO experiment. The energy resolution of PMT signals corresponding to 1 MeV energy scale determined from the Bi-207 decay spectrum, shows a negligible degradation with He exposure; however the rate of after-pulsing shows a clear increase with He exposure, which is modelled and compared to diffusion theory. A method for reconstructing the partial pressure of He within the PMT and a method for determining the He breakdown point, are introduced. The implications for long-term SuperNEMO operations are briefly discussed.

Abstract: During the past decade, state-of-the-art planet-finder instruments like SPHERE@VLT, coupling coronagraphic devices and extreme adaptive optics systems, unveiled, thanks to large surveys, around 20 planetary mass companions at semi-major axis greater than 10 astronomical units. Direct imaging being the only detection technique to be able to probe this outer region of planetary systems, the SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE) was designed and conducted from 2015 to 2021 to study the demographics of such young gas giant planets around 400 young nearby solar-type stars. In this paper, we present the observing strategy, the data quality, and the point sources analysis of the full SHINE statistical sample as well as snapSHINE. Both surveys used the SPHERE@VLT instrument with the IRDIS dual band imager in conjunction with the integral field spectrograph IFS and the angular differential imaging observing technique. All SHINE data (650 datasets), corresponding to 400 stars, including the targets of the F150 survey, are processed in a uniform manner with an advanced post-processing algorithm called PACO ASDI. An emphasis is put on the classification and identification of the most promising candidate companions. Compared to the previous early analysis SHINE F150, the use of advanced post-processing techniques significantly improved by one or 2 magnitudes (x3-x6) the contrast detection limits, which will allow us to put even tighter constraints on the radial distribution of young gas giants. This increased sensitivity directly places SHINE as the largest and deepest direct imaging survey ever conducted. We detected and classified more than 3500 physical sources. 3. Complexity of the Virtual Network Embedding with uniform demands

Abstract: We study the complexity of the Virtual Network Embedding Problem (VNE), which is the combinatorial core of several telecommunication problems related to the implementation of virtualization technologies, such as Network Slicing. VNE is to find an optimal assignment of virtual demands to physical resources, encompassing simultaneous placement and routing decisions. The problem is known to be strongly NP-hard, even when the virtual network is a uniform path, but is polynomial in some practical cases. This article aims to draw a cohesive frontier between easy and hard instances for VNE. For this purpose, we consider uniform demands to focus on structural aspects, rather than packing ones. To this end, specific topologies are studied for both virtual and physical networks that arise in practice, such as trees, cycles, wheels and cliques. Some polynomial greedy or dynamic programming algorithms are proposed, when the physical network is a tree or a cycle, whereas other close cases are shown NP-hard.

Abstract: The newly accessible mid-infrared (MIR) window offered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for exoplanet imaging is expected to provide valuable information to characterize their atmospheres. In particular, coronagraphs on board the JWST Mid-InfraRed instrument (MIRI) are capable of imaging the coldest directly imaged giant planets at the wavelengths where they emit most of their flux. The MIRI coronagraphs have been specially designed to detect the NH3 absorption around 10.5 microns, which has been predicted by atmospheric models. We aim to assess the presence of NH3 while refining the atmospheric parameters of one of the coldest companions detected by directly imaging GJ 504 b. Its mass is still a matter of debate and depending on the host star age estimate, the companion could either be placed in the brown dwarf regime or in the young Jovian planet regime. We present an analysis of MIRI coronagraphic observations of the GJ 504 system. We took advantage of previous observations of reference stars to build a library of images and to perform a more efficient subtraction of the stellar diffraction pattern. We detected the presence of NH3 at 12.5 sigma in the atmosphere, in line with atmospheric model expectations for a planetary-mass object and observed in brown dwarfs within a similar temperature range. The best-fit model with Exo-REM provides updated values of its atmospheric parameters, yielding a temperature of Teff = 512 K and radius of R = 1.08 RJup. These observations demonstrate the capability of MIRI coronagraphs to detect NH3 and to provide the first MIR observations of one of the coldest directly imaged companions. Overall, NH3 is a key molecule for characterizing the atmospheres of cold planets, offering valuable insights into their surface gravity. Abstract: The SuperNEMO experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of \textsuperscript{82}Se, with the unique combination of a tracking detector and a segmented calorimeter. This feature allows to detect the two electrons emitted in the decay and measure their individual energy and angular distribution. The SuperNEMO calorimeter consists of 712 plastic scintillator blocks readout by large PMTs. After the construction of the demonstrator calorimeter underground, we have performed its first commissioning using $\gamma$-particles from calibration sources or from the ambient radioactive background. This article presents the quality assurance tests of the SuperNEMO demonstrator calorimeter and its first time and energy calibrations, with the associated methods.

6. Recipient Profiling: Predicting Characteristics from Messages

Abstract: It has been shown in the field of Author Profiling that texts may inadvertently reveal sensitive information about their authors, such as gender or age. This raises important privacy concerns that have been extensively addressed in the literature, in particular with the development of methods to hide such information. We argue that, when these texts are in fact messages exchanged between individuals, this is not the end of the story. Indeed, in this case, a second party, the intended recipient, is also involved and should be considered. In this work, we investigate the potential privacy leaks affecting them, that is we propose and address the problem of Recipient Profiling. We provide empirical evidence that such a task is feasible on several publicly accessible datasets (https://huggingface.co/datasets/sileod/recipient_profiling). Furthermore, we show that the learned models can be transferred to other datasets, albeit with a loss in accuracy.

7. Whole-body MPC and sensitivity analysis of a real time foot step sequencer for a biped robot Bolt

Abstract: This paper presents a novel controller for the bipedal robot Bolt. Our approach leverages a whole-body model predictive controller in conjunction with a footstep sequencer to achieve robust locomotion. Simulation results demonstrate effective velocity tracking as well as push and slippage recovery abilities. In addition to that, we provide a theoretical sensitivity analysis of the footstep sequencing problem to enhance the understanding of the results.

8. A Structured Estimator for large Covariance Matrices in the Presence of Pairwise and Spatial Covariates

Abstract: We consider the problem of estimating a high-dimensional covariance matrix from a small number of observations when covariates on pairs of variables are available and the variables can have spatial structure. This is motivated by the problem arising in demography of estimating the covariance matrix of the total fertility rate (TFR) of 195 different countries when only 11 observations are available. We construct an estimator for high-dimensional covariance matrices by exploiting information about pairwise covariates, such as whether pairs of variables belong to the same cluster, or spatial structure of the variables, and interactions between the covariates. We reformulate the problem in terms of a mixed effects model. This requires the estimation of only a small number of parameters, which are easy to interpret and which can be selected using standard procedures. The estimator is consistent under general conditions, and asymptotically normal. It works if the mean and variance structure of the data is already specified or if some of the data are missing. We assess its performance under our model assumptions, as well as under model misspecification, using simulations. We find that it outperforms several popular alternatives. 9. Rice-like complexity lower bounds for Boolean and uniform automata networks

Abstract: Automata networks are a versatile model of finite discrete dynamical systems composed of interacting entities (the automata), able to embed any directed graph as a dynamics on its space of configurations (the set of vertices, representing all the assignments of a state to each entity). In this world, virtually any question is decidable by a simple exhaustive search. We lever the Rice-like complexity lower bound, stating that any non-trivial monadic second order logic question on the graph of its dynamics is NP-hard or coNP-hard (given the automata network description), to bounded alphabets (including the Boolean case). This restriction is particularly meaningful for applications to "complex systems", where each entity has a restricted set of possible states (its alphabet). For the non-deterministic case, trivial questions are solvable in constant time, hence there is a sharp gap in complexity for the algorithmic solving of concrete problems on them. For the non-deterministic case, non-triviality is defined at bounded treewidth, which offers a structure to establish metatheorems of complexity lower bounds.

Abstract: Ataxia with anti-regulator of G-protein signaling 8 autoantibodies (RGS8-Abs) is an autoimmune disease recently described in four patients. The present study aimed to identify other patients with RGS8-Abs, describe their clinical features, including the link between RGS8-related autoimmune cerebellar ataxia (ACA) and cancer. Patients with RGS8-Abs were identified retrospectively in the biological collections of the French Reference Center for Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndrome and the University of California San Francisco Center for Encephalitis and Meningitis. Clinical data were collected, and cerebrospinal fluid, serum, and tumor pathological samples were retrieved to characterize the autoantibodies and the associated malignancies. Only three patients with RGS8-Abs were identified. All of them presented with a pure cerebellar ataxia of mild to severe course, unresponsive to current immunotherapy regimens for ACA. Two patients presented with a Hodgkin lymphoma of the rare specific subtype called nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, with very mild extension. Autoantibodies detected in all patients enriched the same epitope on the RGS8 protein, which is an intracellular protein physiologically expressed in Purkinje cells but also ectopically expressed specifically in lymphoma cells of patients with RGS8-related ACA. The present results and those of the four cases previously described suggest that RGS8-Abs define a new paraneoplastic neurological syndrome of extreme rarity found mostly in middle-aged males that associates pure cerebellar ataxia and a particular lymphoma specifically expressing the RGS8 antigen. As in other paraneoplastic ACA with intracellular antigen, the disease course is severe, and patients tend to exhibit a poor response to immune therapy.

Abstract: Mid-infrared imaging of exoplanets and disks is now possible with the coronagraphs of the MIRI on the JWST. This wavelength range unveils new features of young directly imaged systems and allows us to obtain new constraints for characterizing the atmosphere of young giant exoplanets and associated disks. These observations aim to characterize the atmosphere of the planet HD 95086 b by adding mid-infrared information so that the various hypotheses about its atmospheric parameters values can be unraveled. Improved images of circumstellar disks are provided. We present the MIRI coronagraphic imaging of the system HD 95086 obtained with the F1065C, F1140, and F2300C filters at central wavelengths of 10.575, 11.3, and 23 microns, respectively. We explored the method for subtracting the stellar diffraction pattern in the particular case when bright dust emitting at short separation is present. Furthermore, we compared different methods for extracting the photometry of the planet. Using the atmospheric models Exo-REM and ATMO, we measured the atmospheric parameters of HD 95086 b. The planet HD 95086 b and the contribution from the inner disk are detected at the two shortest MIRI wavelengths F1065C and F1140C. The outer colder belt is imaged at 23 microns. The mid-infrared photometry provides better constraints on the atmospheric parameters. We evaluate a temperature of 800-1050 K, consistent with one previous hypothesis that only used NIR data. The radius measurement of 1.0-1.14 RJup is better aligned with evolutionary models, but still smaller than predicted. These observations allow us to refute the hypothesis of a warm circumplanetary disk. HD 95086 is one of the first exoplanetary systems to be revealed at mid-infrared wavelengths. 12. Enhancement of the sound absorption of closed-cell mineral foams by perforations: Manufacturing process and model-supported adaptation

Abstract: Thin low-frequency acoustic absorbers that are economical to produce in large quantities are scarce, and their efficiency is often limited to a narrow frequency range. In this paper, we present opportunities to use highly porous mineral foams, in particular optimally designed gypsum foams, to achieve high absorption levels for layers of less than 1/10 of a wavelength thick. To reach this goal, we perforate a fraction of the initially closed pores using thin needles. Finite element simulations of the fluid flow in a representative volume element show how the combination of foam properties (cell size and wall thickness) and perforation pattern (hole diameter and perforation distance) can be chosen such that sub-wavelength absorption is obtained. In particular two transport parameters used in the approximate but robust Johnson-Champoux-Allard model for porous media have to be optimized: the flow resistivity and high-frequency tortuosity. The fluid flow modeling results are successfully compared with sound absorption measurements, showing indeed that the proposed material, once appropriately perforated, yields a remarkable low-frequency sound absorption peak. On a more fundamental level, this paper shows how the multiporosity, the presence of microcracks, and the material's surface roughness can be exploited to enhance its acoustic absorption at very low frequencies.

13. Nanodosimetric characterisation of proton track structure: a comparison of sampling and clustering algorithms using Geant4-DNA

Abstract: This study evaluates the influence of the algorithm used to calculate conditional ionisation cluster size distributions (ICSD) and nanodosimetric parameters from proton track structures obtained with Geant4-DNA simulations. The Uniform Sampling (US) and Associated Volume (AV) sampling algorithms and the DBSCAN clustering algorithm were used to calculate the ICSD conditioned on cluster sizes $\nu \ge 1$. In the AV algorithm, we explored two configurations: one where sampling volumes could overlap ("Overlap") and one where volumes could not overlap ("No Overlap"). The Overlap configuration was corrected with the weight function $w(\nu)=\nu^{-1}$ to eliminate the bias towards regions of high density of ionisations. In sampling algorithms, clusters were defined as the number of ionisations in spheres of 3.4 nm in diameter. In DBSCAN, clusters were formed according to a proximity criterion (maximum distance of 3.4 nm) between two ionisations - no additional geometrical restrictions were applied. The conditional ICSD, the mean cluster size, and a set of complementary cumulative frequencies were compared. We considered differences in the mean difference larger than two standard deviations statistically significant. Overall, differences between the No Overlap and the Overlap configurations and between the US and AV algorithms were statistically significant but relatively small, except when statistical fluctuations dominated. DBSCAN always resulted in significantly larger mean cluster sizes. We showed that the fast and efficient AV can be used instead of the relatively inefficient US to calculate conditional ICSDs without significant loss of accuracy. The differences observed between DBSCAN and the other algorithms are understood and originate in the fact that while the scoring volume is fixed for the sampling algorithms, for DBSCAN, it evolves according to the distance between ionisations., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: This paper presents an energy resolution study of the JUNO experiment, incorporating the latest knowledge acquired during the detector construction phase. The determination of neutrino mass ordering in JUNO requires an exceptional energy resolution better than 3\% at 1~MeV. To achieve this ambitious goal, significant efforts have been undertaken in the design and production of the key components of the JUNO detector. Various factors affecting the detection of inverse beta decay signals have an impact on the energy resolution, extending beyond the statistical fluctuations of the detected number of photons, such as the properties of the liquid scintillator, performance of photomultiplier tubes, and the energy reconstruction algorithm. To account for these effects, a full JUNO simulation and reconstruction approach is employed. This enables the modeling of all relevant effects and the evaluation of associated inputs to accurately estimate the energy resolution. The results of study reveal an energy resolution of 2.95\% at 1~MeV. Furthermore, this study assesses the contribution of major effects to the overall energy resolution budget. This analysis serves as a reference for interpreting future measurements of energy resolution during JUNO data collection. Moreover, it provides a guideline for comprehending the energy resolution characteristics of liquid scintillator-based detectors.

Abstract: We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $\tau/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $\tau/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Finite discrete-time dynamical systems (FDDS) model phenomena that evolve deterministically in discrete time. It is possible to define sum and product operations on these systems (disjoint union and direct product, respectively) giving a commutative semiring. This algebraic structure led to several works employing polynomial equations to model hypotheses on phenomena modelled using FDDS. To solve these equations, algorithms for performing the division and computing $k$-th roots are needed. In this paper, we propose two polynomial algorithms for these tasks, under the condition that the result is a connected FDDS. This ultimately leads to an efficient solution to equations of the type $AX^k=B$ for connected $X$. These results are some of the important final steps for solving more general polynomial equations on FDDS.

Abstract: We carried out very deep VLT/SPHERE imaging polarimetry of the nearby system Eps Eri based on 38.5 hours of integration time with a 600 - 900 nm broadband filter to search for polarized scattered light from a planet or from circumstellar dust using AO, coronagraphy, high precision differential polarimetry, and angular differential imaging. We have improved several data reduction and post-processing techniques and also developed new ones to further increase the sensitivity of SPHERE/ZIMPOL. The data provide unprecedented contrast limits, but no significant detection of a point source or an extended signal from circumstellar dust. For each observing epoch, we obtained a point source contrast for the polarized intensity between $2\cdot 10^{-8}$ and $4\cdot 10^{-8}$ at the expected separation of the planet Eps Eri b of 1'' near quadrature phase. The polarimetric contrast limits are about six to 50 times better than the intensity limits because polarimetric imaging is much more efficient in speckle suppression. Combining the entire 14-month data set to the search for a planet moving on a Keplerian orbit with the K-Stacker software further improves the contrast limits by a factor of about two, to about $8 \cdot 10^{-9}$ at 1''. This would allow the detection of a planet with a radius of about 2.5 Jupiter radii. The surface brightness contrast limits achieved for the polarized intensity from an extended scattering region are about 15 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ at 1'', or up to 3 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ deeper than previous limits. For Eps Eri, these limits exclude the presence of a narrow dust ring and they constrain the dust properties. This study shows that the polarimetric contrast limits for reflecting planets with SPHERE/ZIMPOL can be improved to a level $<10^{-8}$ simply by collecting more data over many nights and using the K-Stacker software., Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures, 5 tables. Abstract: Hemodynamic changes occur in stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. Developing imaging techniques allowing the in vivo visualization and quantification of cerebral blood flow would help better understand the underlying mechanism of those cerebrovascular diseases. 3D ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) is a novel technology that can map the microvasculature of the brain at large depth and has been mainly used until now in rodents. Here, we demonstrated the feasibility of 3D ULM of the nonhuman primate (NHP) brain with a single 256-channels programmable ultrasound scanner. We achieved a highly resolved vascular map of the macaque brain at large depth in presence of craniotomy and durectomy using an 8-MHz multiplexed matrix probe. We were able to distinguish vessels as small as 26.9 {\mu}m. We also demonstrated that transcranial imaging of the macaque brain at similar depth was feasible using a 3-MHz probe and achieved a resolution of 60.4 {\mu}m. This work paves the way to clinical application of 3D ULM.

28. Complexity of Boolean automata networks under block-parallel update modes

Abstract: Boolean automata networks (aka Boolean networks) are space-time discrete dynamical systems, studied as a model of computation and as a representative model of natural phenomena. A collection of simple entities (the automata) update their 0-1 states according to local rules. The dynamics of the network is highly sensitive to update modes, i.e., to the schedule according to which the automata apply their local rule. A new family of update modes appeared recently, called block-parallel, which is dual to the well studied block-sequential. Although basic, it embeds the rich feature of update repetitions among a temporal updating period, allowing for atypical asymptotic behaviors. In this paper, we prove that it is able to breed complex computations, squashing almost all decision problems on the dynamics to the traditionally highest (for reachability questions) class PSPACE. Despite obtaining these complexity bounds for a broad set of local and global properties, we also highlight a surprising gap: bijectivity is still coNP.

Abstract: We theoretically study how differential privacy interacts with both individual and group fairness in binary linear classification. More precisely, we focus on the output perturbation mechanism, a classic approach in privacy-preserving machine learning. We derive high-probability bounds on the level of individual and group fairness that the perturbed models can achieve compared to the original model. Hence, for individual fairness, we prove that the impact of output perturbation on the level of fairness is bounded but grows with the dimension of the model. For group fairness, we show that this impact is determined by the distribution of so-called angular margins, that is signed margins of the non-private model re-scaled by the norm of each example.

Abstract: The distribution of fiber diameters plays a crucial role in the transport and sound absorbing properties of a three-dimensional random fibrous (3D-RF) composites. Conventionally, volume-weighted averaging of fiber diameters has been utilized as an appropriate microstructural descriptor to predict the static viscous permeability of 3D-RF composites. However, the long wavelength acoustical properties of a 3D-RF composites are also sensitive to the smallest fibers, this is particularly true in the high-frequency regime. In our recent research, we demonstrated that an inverse volume-weighted averaging of fiber diameters can effectively serve as a complementary microstructural descriptor to capture the high-frequency behavior of polydisperse fibrous media. In the present work, we review the identification of two representative volume elements (RVEs) which relies on the reconstruction of 3D-RF composites having volume-weighted and inverse-volume weighted averaged fiber diameters, respectively in the low-frequency and high frequency regimes. We examine the implication of such a weighting procedure on the transport and sound absorbing properties of polydisperse fibrous media, highlighting their potential advantages. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges associated with this research field. Abstract: The multi planet system HR8799 is the first target observed with MIRI's coronagraphs as part of the MIRI-EC Guaranteed Time Observations exoplanets programme in Nov. 2022. We obtained deep observations in three coronagraphic filters from 10 to 15mic (F1065C, F1140C, F1550C), and one standard imaging filter at 20 mic (F2100W), with the goal to extract the photometry of the four planets, as well as to detect and investigate the distribution of circumstellar dust. Using dedicated observations of a reference star, we tested several algorithms to subtract the stellar diffraction pattern while preserving the fluxes of planets, which can be significantly affected by over-subtraction. Measuring correctly the planet's flux values requires accounting for the attenuation by the coronagraphs as a function of their position, and to estimate the normalisation with respect to the central star. We tested several procedures to derive averaged photometric values and error bars. These observations have enabled us to obtain two main results. First of all, the four planets in the system are well recovered, and their mid-IR fluxes, combined with near-IR flux values from the literature, are compared to two exoplanet atmosphere models, ATMO and Exo-REM. As a main outcome, the MIRI photometric data points imply larger radii (0.86 or 1.07 RJ for planet b) and cooler temperatures (950 or 1100 K for planet b), especially for planet b, in better agreement with evolutionary models. Abstract: The development of neurologically active drugs faces a challenge in treating brain diseases due to the blood-brain barrier's impermeability. High-intensity focused ultrasound can open the barrier in a targeted manner, expanding treatment options. However, this procedure risks brain damage and off-target effects without proper monitoring. Current monitoring methods have limitations. We present Equivalent Time Active Cavitation Imaging, a novel ultrasound modality that characterizes the ultrasound pressure field during treatment. This system utilizes a unique plane wave sequence and an algorithm to filter the microbubble signal for pressure field mapping. We conducted pressure measurements in vitro for comparison with hydrophones and in vivo during blood-brain barrier opening in mice. Our modality successfully spatiotemporally characterizes the pressure field with an active imaging setup, demonstrating good correlation with hydrophone measurements. Experimental in vivo results are promising, establishing the feasibility of this monitoring method. In conclusion, this proof of concept represents a significant step toward a new ultrasound modality for monitoring blood-brain barrier opening using focused ultrasound. Abstract: A technique is proposed that uses a multi-scale approach to calculate transport properties of compressed felts using only image analysis and numerical calculations. From the image analysis fiber diameter distribution and fiber orientation are determined. From a known porosity and the latter two characteristics, two representative elementary volumes (REV) are constructed: one based on the volume-weighted average diameter and one on an inverse volume-weighted average diameter. Numerical calculations on the former showed that it correctly estimates viscous and thermal permeabilities, while the latter correctly estimates tortuosity and viscous and thermal characteristic lengths. From these calculations, micro-macro analytical expressions are developed to estimate the transport properties of polydisperse composite felts based solely on open porosity, fiber diameter polydiversity, and fiber orientation. Good agreements are obtained between analytical predictions and measurements of transport properties. The predicted transport properties are also used in the Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge (JCAL) equivalent fluid model to predict the sound absorption coefficient of the felts. Abstract: The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract: The increase over the last years of the testing activities related to quantum systems, SRF cavities for the PIP-II and the LCLS-II projects, as well as superconducting magnets for the HL-LHC project and Fusion research activities, has required the addition of a new Helium cryogenic plant into the existing IB-1 Industrial Cryogenic Test Facility. The new cryogenic plant is composed of a cryogenic liquefier (Cold Box) able to provide up to 340 L/h, a 4 kL Dewar and two Mycom compressors providing up to 120 g/s. AL-AT (Air Liquide Advanced Technologies) has taken part of this project by designing and manufacturing the cryogenic liquefier. This new cryogenic plant is connected through a cryogenic distribution system to a 10 kL Dewar, which is part of the existing cryogenic test facility, itself composed of another Cold Box and a Sullair compressor. The new cryogenic plant has two main operating modes: one allows to transfer liquid helium at 1.7 bar between the two Dewars, the other allows to transfer supercritical Helium at 2 bar or more between the new Cold Box and the 10 kL Dewar. The entire industrial cryogenic facility is handled by a common Inventory Control System, composed of three control valves, and 9 tanks giving a total buffer volume of more than 1000 m3. Abstract: Conventional ultrasound imaging relies on the computation of geometric time delay from multiple sensors to detect the position of a scatterer. In this paper, we present Ergodic Relay Ultrasound Imaging (ERUI), a method that utilizes an ergodic cavity down to a single ultrasonic sensor for ultrasound imaging. With the proposed method, the ergodic cavity creates a unique temporal signature that encodes the position of a scatterer. When compared to standard approaches, ERUI enables the generation of images of comparable quality while utilizing fewer detector elements. Our results suggest that ERUI has the potential to achieve image resolution similar to that of traditional imaging techniques, shifting the complexity from hardware to sofware. Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, matches the publised version

50. Easily Computed Marginal Likelihoods from Posterior Simulation Using the THAMES Estimator

Abstract: We propose an easily computed estimator of marginal likelihoods from posterior simulation output, via reciprocal importance sampling, combining earlier proposals of DiCiccio et al (1997) and Robert and Wraith (2009). This involves only the unnormalized posterior densities from the sampled parameter values, and does not involve additional simulations beyond the main posterior simulation, or additional complicated calculations. It is unbiased for the reciprocal of the marginal likelihood, consistent, has finite variance, and is asymptotically normal. It involves one user-specified control parameter, and we derive an optimal way of specifying this. We illustrate it with several numerical examples.
