In this study, beryllium tiles from Joint European Torus (JET) vacuum vessel wall were analysed and compared regarding their position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation conditions during two campaigns of ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) in 2011-2012 (ILW1) and 2013-2014 (ILW2) Tritium content in beryllium samples were assessed. Two methods were used to measure tritium content in the samples - dissolution under controlled conditions and tritium thermal desorption. Prior to desorption and dissolution experiments, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to study structure and chemical composition of plasma-facing-surfaces of the beryllium samples. Experimental results revealed that tritium content in the samples is in range of 2.10(11)-2.10(13) tritium atoms per square centimetre of the surface area with its highest content in the samples from the outer wall of the vacuum vessel (up to 1.9.10(13) atoms/cm(2) in ILW1 campaign and 2.4.10(13) atoms/cm(2) in ILW2). The lowest content of tritium was found in the upper part of the vacuum vessel (2.0.10(12) atoms/cm(2) and 2.0.10(11) atoms/cm(2) in ILW1 and ILW2, respectively). Results obtained from scanning electron microscopy has shown that surface morphology is different within single tile, however if to compare two campaigns main tendencies remains similar. The role of the pedestal position on the pedestal performance has been investigated in AUG, JET-ILW and TCV. When the pedestal is peeling-ballooning (PB) limited, the three machines show a similar behaviour. The outward shift of the pedestal density relative to the pedestal temperature can lead to the outward shift of the pedestal pressure which, in turns, reduces the PB stability, degrades the pedestal confinement and reduces the pedestal width. Once the experimental density position is considered, the EPED model is able to correctly predict the pedestal height. An estimate of the impact of the density position on a ITER baseline scenario shows that the maximum reduction in the pedestal height is 10% while the reduction in the fusion power is between 10% and 40% depending on the assumptions for the core transport model usedIn other plasmas, where the pedestal density is shifted even more outwards relative to the pedestal temperature, the pedestal does not seem PB limited and a different behaviour is observed. The outward shift of the density is still empirically correlated with the pedestal degradation but no change in the pressure position is observed and the PB model is not able to correctly predict the pedestal height. On the other hand, the outward shift of the density leads to a significant increase of eta(e) and eta(i) (where eta(e,i) is the ratio of density to temperature scale lengths, eta(e,i) = L-eta e,L-i/L-Te,L-i) which leads to the increase of the growth rate of microinstabilities (mainly ETG and ITG) by 50%. This suggests that, in these plasmas, the increase in the turbulent transport due to the outward shift of the density might play an important role in the decrease of the pedestal performance.

4. Nanoscale Investigation of Photoinduced Hydrophilicity Variations in Anatase and Rutile Nanopowders

- Abstract
The photoactive properties of TiO2are employed to develop surfaces with self-cleaning capabilities. Clearly, the fine-tuning of such surfaces for different applications relies on a holistic understanding of the different aspects that induce the self-cleaning behavior. Among those, the mechanisms responsible for the photoinduced surface alteration in the TiO2allotropes are still not completely understood. In this study, TiO2polymorphs nanopowders are investigated by combining the high spatial resolution observables of recently developed atomic force microscopy (AFM) based force spectroscopy techniques with diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Phase maps under irradiated and nonirradiated conditions for anatase and rutile suggest the existence of two distinct behaviors that are further discerned by energy analysis of amplitude and phase vs distance curves. Independently, surface analysis of anatase and rutile by means of DRIFTS spectroscopy reveals a readily distinguishable coexistence of dissociated water and molecular water on the two phases, confirming the stronger photoactivity of anatase. The peculiarity of the surface interaction under UV exposure is further investigated by reconstructing the force profiles between the oscillating AFM tip and the TiO2phases with the attempt of gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms that cause the different hydrophilic properties in the TiO2allotropes.

5. Biocorrosion Behavior of Titanium Oxide/Butoxide-Coated Stainless Steel.

Stainless steel coated with multilayers of Ti oxide/butoxide was prepared via a layer-by-layer sol-gel deposition process. The successful buildup of the Ti oxide/butoxide coatings was ascertained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and static water Contact angle measurements. The differences in corrosion behavior between the Ti oxide/butoxide-coated and the uncoated coupons in a simulated seawater-based modified Baar's medium inoculated with Desulfovibrio desulfuricans under anaerobic conditions were investigated by electrochemical analyses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Electrochemical analyses and SEM results revealed that the pristine, the hydroxylated, and the nitric acid-passivated coupons were all vulnerable to biocorrosion due to localized breakdown of the passive film under synergistic attack of Desulfovibrio desulfuri- cans and biogenic sulfide ions, leading to destructive pitting and crevice corrosion. However, the Ti oxide/butoxide-coated coupons exhibited desirable resistance in the biocorrosion environment and the coating remained relatively stable throughout the exposure period. EDX analysis revealed that the bioactive properties of the Ti oxide/butoxide coating arose from the concomitant deposition of calcium and phosphorous compounds. The increase in resistance of the Ti oxide/butoxide coatings with time was correlated with the increase in nucleation of calcium anatite in electrochemical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is extremely harmful to maritime industries and to the environment. A surface modification technique was developed in this work to impart antibacterial and corrosion-inhibition properties Onto the surface- oxidized Cu-Ni alloy to inhibit MIC. Thus, 4-(chloromethyl)phenyl tricholorosilane was first immobilized on the oxidized metal surface to allow the coupling of 4,4′-bipyridine to the methyl-chloride groups. Subsequently quaternization by benzyl chloride converted the terminal pyridine groups into pyridinium groups. The success of each functionalization step was ascertained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Static water contact angle measurement. The quaternized viologen moieties exhibited good bacterial inhibition efficiency at the initial stages of exposure to a seawater-based medium containing aerobic bacteria belonging to the genera Pseudomonas, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy images. The corrosion- inhibition properties of the organic layer were verified by Tafel polarization curves, cyclic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In comparison; the pristine Cu-Ni alloy was readily susceptible to MIC in the same medium and under the same conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Coatings on Stainless Steel by Layer-by-Layer Deposition and Surface-Initiated Atom-Transfer-Radical Polymerization for Combating Biocorrosion

- Abstract
To improve the biocorrosion resistance of stainless steel (SS) and to confer the bactericidal function on its surface for inhibiting bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, well-defined inorganic-organic hybrid coatings, consisting of the inner compact titanium oxide multilayers and outer dense poly(vinyl-N-hexylpyridinium) brushes, were successfully developed. Nanostructured titanium oxide multilayer coatings were first built up on the SS substrates via the layer-by-layer sol-gel deposition process. The trichlorosilane coupling agent, containing the alkyl halide atom-transfer-radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator, was subsequently immobilized on the titanium oxide coatings for surface-initiated ATRP of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP). The pyridium nitrogen moieties of the covalently immobilized 4VP polymer, or P(4VP), brushes were quaternized with hexyl bromide to produce a high concentration of quaternary ammonium salt on the SS surfaces. The excellent antibacterial efficiency of the grafted polycations, poly(vinyl-N-pyridinium bromide), was revealed by viable cell counts and atomic force microscopy images of the surface. The effectiveness of the hybrid coatings in corrosion protection was verified by the Tafel plot and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements.

9. Light Distribution Model for an Annular Reactor with a Cylindrical Reflector

- Abstract
Accurate prediction of the light distribution field is important for designing large-scale photoreactors. So far, many incident light models have been developed that can be used for an accurate assessment of the light distribution field in annular photoreactors. Sometimes coated reflectors are used in the reactors to recycle photons, which are otherwise wasted; however, in these situations, the performance of the above models has not been tested. In this study, a new light distribution model based on a line source with diffuse emission model has been developed that considers the reflector as a second light source in addition to the original light installed along the centerline of the annular photoreactor. The performance of the new model is satisfactory in comparison with the experimental data obtained using chemical actinometry in a gas-phase photoreactor.

10. Removal of Aqueous Cr(VI) by a Combination of Photocatalytic Reduction and Coprecipitation

- Abstract
Semiconductor photocatalytic reduction is a relatively new technique for the removal of dissolved toxic metal ions from wastewater. In this paper, adsorption and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) inaqueous solutions by UV/TiO
2 photocatalysis has been investigated. It has been observed that the pH of the solution plays an important role in this reaction. An acidic medium is favorable for Cr(VI) photocatalytic reduction, where 94% of Cr(VI) was photoreduced within 1 h at pH 3 when 2 g/L of TiO2 was used as the slurry. An adsorption study shows that the photocatalytic reduction mainly occurs on the surface of TiO2 . The presence of Fe(III) improved the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) because it was observed that an additional reaction between Fe(II) and Cr(VI) takes place in the UV/TiO2 reduction process. A new combination of photocatalytic reduction and metal ion coprecipitation using Fe(OH)3 for complete removal of aqueous Cr [Cr(VI) as well as Cr(III)] was designed, which reduced the chromium concentration from 30 ppm to 17 ppb for a simulated wastewater. Thermodynamic analysis showed that TiO2 cannot photoreduce Cr(III) to Cr(0), but reduction is possible with ZnS. When kinetic experiments were performed, it was observed that more than 86% of Cr(III) could be photoreduced to Cr(0) in 5 h with a ZnS catalyst.- Published

11. Evaluation of Three Different Lamp Emission Models Using Novel Application of Potassium Ferrioxalate Actinometry

- Abstract
The application of advanced oxidation processes using hydroxyl radicals in the degradation of organic contaminants from various waste streams has become increasingly popular over the last 2 decades. The relationship between the local volumetric rate of energy absorption in a photoreactor and the rate of photodegradation of organics is essential in scaling up photoreactors to treat large volumes of air and water. Thus, it is very important that the light intensity in a photoreactor is evaluated correctly. In this research, local light intensities as a function of both radius and longitudinal axis in a test photoreactor for the treatment of air were measured using chemical actinometry and compared with the simulated data using three radiation models. A good agreement exists between the experimental data and the model predictions, and no model exhibits a clear advantage over others. The line source with diffused emission model shows the best overall performance among the three models with regard to computational time, simplicity, and accuracy.

UV photolysis of H
2 O2 in solid Ar, Kr, and Xe yields isolated OH radicals and a complex between a water molecule and a ground-state (3P) oxygen atom. The vibrational bands of the HOH···O complex are observed at 3730.1 and 3633.0 cm-1 in Ar, at 3718.6 and 3622.4 cm-1 in Kr, and at 3704.3 and 3607.3 cm-1 in Xe matrices. The assignment is based on isotopic substitution, selective photoinduced processes between H2 O2 and HOH···O, and ab initio calculations. In Kr and Xe matrices, the complex is formed with much less efficiency when compared with Ar matrices, indicating the existence of other photolysis channels. Computational results on the complex geometry and vibrational frequencies are presented and compared with experimental data.- Published

- Abstract
The decomposition of equimolar NaBr-KBr mixed crystal has been studied within a temperature range of 115 to 251 °C. The measurements were made with an apparatus suitable for continuous recording of the changes in specimen capacitance. The results indicated that the decomposition takes place in three steps. A report is made on the decay constants, half-lives, and activation energies of the first two steps - the nucleation of a freshly prepared specimen, and the subsequent decomposition of the nucleated mixed crystal into components which are nearly pure. It was found that above 150 °C the rate of these processes is affected by a temperature-dependent effect of do-main formation. The experimental result for the activation energy associated with the processes, 0.84 ± 0.05 eV, compares favourably with the value derived from a simple diffusion model.

A calibration of the JET neutron detectors was carried out prior to the upcoming deuterium-tritium experimental campaign. Two Compact DT neutron generators (NGs) were purchased for this purpose from VNIIA, Russia. These generators are capable of producing approximately 2 x 10(8) neutrons/s with a DT fusion energy spectrum. Preceding the in-vessel calibration measurements, these compact generators were tested and fully characterised at the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL). In order to support the characterisation measurements, detailed neutronics models were developed of the NGs, monitoring detectors and remote handling (RH) apparatus. Neutron spectra calculated from these models have been used to help determine NPL long counter efficiencies and effective centres, as well as NPL reference iron and aluminium activation foil reaction rates. The neutron emission rate has been measured for both generators as a function of angle using absolutely calibrated long counters and the relative emission rate by monitoring single crystal diamond detectors. The measured anisotropy profile is shown to be reproducible with a detailed NG MCNP model. Consequently, the neutron source routine and the MCNP model of the NGs can be reliably used for the analysis of the in-vessel calibration at JET.

The Materials Detritiation Facility has been designed to thermally treat solid non-combustible radioactive waste produced during operations of the Joint European Torus (JET) that is classified as Intermediate Level Waste in the UK due to its tritium inventory (> 12 kBq/g). The waste will be thermally treated in a retort furnace at temperatures up to 1000 degrees C under a flowing air atmosphere to reduce its tritium inventory sufficiently to allow its disposal at a lower waste category via existing disposal routes. The gaseous flow from the furnace will be processed via a bubbler system, where released tritium will be trapped in water. Commissioning of the facility will be divided into two main parts: inactive and active. The main purpose of the inactive commissioning is to verify that all components and safety systems of the facility are installed, tested and operated properly and within their operational limits. Several trials of the furnace with non-radioactive materials will be performed to verify its temperature profile, and to verify operation of the gaseous process line. During the active commissioning, small amounts of tritium-contaminated material will be introduced into the facility and used for active trials. The tritium inventory in this material has been selected based on the As low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) principle, to ensure that the activity levels are sufficient to fully test the control instrumentation and pose minimal risk to operators during commissioning. Overall, four active trials will be performed with carbon-based and Inconel materials with total tritium inventories of 1MBq, 3GBq, 20GBq and 26GBq. Tritium levels in the bubblers as well as in aerial discharge from the facility will be monitored. Furthermore, all materials used in the active trials will be sampled and analyzed to verify the performance of the process and confirm that a major part of tritium inventory can be removed from materials by the process.

A novel approach to uncertainty quantification in codes simulating fusion plasma, deterministic sampling (DS), is evaluated. This method uses a few carefully selected samples and can be used to propagate input parameter uncertainties through calculations where other sampling methods are unmanageable due to time constraints. The primary analysis is performed on the transport code TRANSP, but another faster code is also tested where a comparison with Monte Carlo sampling is made. The tests, performed with two pulses at the Joint European Torus (JET), show that even lower order DS will give a reliable estimation of the standard deviation of the calculated neutron rate. However, a higher order DS can give information about higher output moments, such as skewness an kurtosis. The TRANSP-simulated neutron rates of both examined pulses are found to have an uncertainty with an upward skewness, meaning input parameter uncertainties are can better explain an underestimation of the neutron rate than an overestimation. This information can, for example, be lead to a better benchmarking comparison between the measured and calculated neutron rates.

The International Tokamak Physics Activity topical group on integrated operational scenarios has compiled a database of stationary H-mode discharges at q(95) similar to 3 from AUG, C-Mod, DIII-D, JET and JT-60U, for both carbon wall and high-Z metal wall experiments with similar to 3300 entries. The analyses focus on discharges that are stationary for. 5 thermal energy confinement times to evaluate the baseline scenario proposed for ITER at 15 MA for achieving its goals of Q = 10, fusion power of 500 MW at normalised pressure, beta(N) = 1.8 and normalised confinement as predicted by the standard H-mode scaling, H-98y2 = 1. With the data restricted to stationary H-modes at q(95) similar to 3, the database shows significant variation of thermal energy confinement compared to the standard H-mode scaling (IPB98(y, 2)) in dimensionless form. The data show similar scaling with normalised gyro-radius, but more favourable scaling towards lower collision frequency and more favourable scaling with plasma beta. Using all the engineering variables employed in IPB98(y, 2), results in an overfit due to correlations among the data. Moreover, there are significant residual trends in the confinement for plasma current, device size, loss power, and in particular for the plasma density. Significant differences between results obtained for devices with a carbon wall and high-Z metal wall are observed in the data, with data from carbon wall devices providing a larger operating space, encompassing ITER parameters or even exceeding them. H-modes in high-Z metal wall devices have, so-far, not accessed conditions at low collision frequencies, have lower normalised confinement (H-98y2 similar to 0.8-0.9) at low input power or beta, achieving H-98y2 similar to 1.0 only at input powers two times the L-to H-mode transition scaling predictions and at beta(N) similar to 2.0. Hence, only the best H-modes with high-Z metal walls reach ITER baseline performance requirements. The data show that operating at high plasma density, with line-averaged density at 85% of Greenwald density is achievable for H-98y2 > 0.95 for a range of plasma configurations, and that operation at low plasma inductance with l(i)(3) similar to 0.7-0.75 is feasible. Scenario simulations employed for projecting the plasma performance in ITER should incorporate a lower thermal confinement at low plasma beta for the entry to burn and provide projections using higher levels of plasma core radiation by plasma impurities. Moreover, ITER projections should not subtract the core radiation in the evaluation of the thermal confinement time and H-98y2, to allow a fair comparison with experimental data currently available. From the data presented here, it is likely that in ITER the energy confinement time will not increase with plasma density and will have no degradation with plasma beta. The analyses indicate that the data at q(95) similar to 3 are consistent with achievement of the ITER mission goals at 15 MA.

The impact of the finite grid size in SOLPS-ITER edge plasma simulations is assessed for JET H-mode discharges with a metal wall. For a semi-horizontal divertor configuration it is shown that the separatrix density is at least 30% higher when a narrow scrape-off layer (SOL) grid width is chosen in SOLPS-ITER compared to the case for which the SOL grid width is maximised. The density increase is caused by kinetic neutrals being not confined inside the divertor region because of the reduced extent of the plasma grid. In this case, an enhanced level of reflections of energetic neutrals at the low-field side (LFS) metal divertor wall is observed. This leads to a shift of the ionisation source further upstream which must be accounted for as a numerical artefact. An overestimate in the cooling at the divertor entrance is observed in this case, identified by a reduced heat flux decay parameters lambda(div)(q). Otherwise and further upstream the mid-plane heat decay length lambda(q) parameter is not affected by any change in divertor dissipation. This confirms the assumptions made for the ITER divertor design studies, i.e. that lambda(q) upstream is essentially set by the assumptions for the ratio radial to parallel heat conductivity. It is also shown that even for attached conditions the decay length relations lambda(ne)>lambda(Te)>lambda(q) hold in the near-SOL upstream. Thus for interpretative edge plasma simulations one must take the (experimental) value of lambda(ne) into account, rather than lambda(q), as the former actually defines the required minimum upstream SOL grid extent.

Fusion energy systems pose unique challenges to the modeling and simulation community. These challenges must be met to ensure the success of the ITER experimental fusion reactor. ITER's complex systems require detailed modeling that goes beyond the scale of comparable simulations to date. In this work, the Denovo radiation transport code was used to calculate neutron fluence and kerma for the JET streaming benchmark. This work was performed on the Titan supercomputer at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility. Denovo is a novel three-dimensional discrete ordinates transport code designed to be highly scalable. Sensitivity studies have been completed to examine the impact of several deterministic parameters. Results were compared against experiment as well as the MCNP and Shift Monte Carlo codes.

The kinetic code for plasma periphery (KIPP) was used to assess the importance of the kinetic effects of parallel electron transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and divertor of JET high radiative H-mode inter-ELM plasma conditions with the ITER-like wall and strong nitrogen (N-2) injection. Plasma parameter profiles along a magnetic field from one of the EDGE2D-EIRENE simulation cases were used as an input for KIPP runs. Profiles were maintained by particle and power sources. KIPP generated electron distribution functions, f(e), parallel power fluxes, electron-ion thermoforces, Debye sheath potential drops and electron sheath transmission factors at divertor targets. For heat fluxes in the main SOL, KIPP results showed deviations from classical (e.g. Braginskii) fluxes by factors typically of similar to 1.5, sometimes up to 2, with the flux limiting for more upstream positions and flux enhancement near entrances to the divertor. In the divertor, at the same time, for radial positions closer to the separatrix, very large heat flux enhancement factors of up to ten or even higher, indicative of a strong nonlocal heat transport, were found at the outer target, with heat power flux density exhibiting bump-on-tail features at high energies. Under such extreme conditions, however, contributions of conductive power fluxes to total power fluxes were strongly reduced, with convective power fluxes becoming comparable, or sometimes exceeding, conductive power fluxes. Electron-ion thermoforce, on the other hand, which is known to be determined mostly by thermal and subthermal electrons, was found to be in good agreement with Braginskii formulas, including the Z(eff) dependence. Overall, KIPP results indicate, at least for the plasma conditions used in this modelling, a sizable, but not dominant, effect of kinetics on parallel electron transport.
