We introduce a formal notion of defendability against backdoors using a game between an attacker and a defender. In this game, the attacker modifies a function to behave differently on a particular input known as the "trigger", while behaving the same almost everywhere else. The defender then attempts to detect the trigger at evaluation time. If the defender succeeds with high enough probability, then the function class is said to be defendable. The key constraint on the attacker that makes defense possible is that the attacker's strategy must work for a randomly-chosen trigger. Our definition is simple and does not explicitly mention learning, yet we demonstrate that it is closely connected to learnability. In the computationally unbounded setting, we use a voting algorithm of Hanneke et al. (2022) to show that defendability is essentially determined by the VC dimension of the function class, in much the same way as PAC learnability. In the computationally bounded setting, we use a similar argument to show that efficient PAC learnability implies efficient defendability, but not conversely. On the other hand, we use indistinguishability obfuscation to show that the class of polynomial size circuits is not efficiently defendable. Finally, we present polynomial size decision trees as a natural example for which defense is strictly easier than learning. Thus, we identify efficient defendability as a notable intermediate concept in between efficient learnability and obfuscation., Comment: 29 pages

Employing a recent technology of tree surgery we prove a ``deletion-constriction'' formula for products of rooted spanning trees on weighted directed graphs that generalizes deletion-contraction on undirected graphs. The formula implies that, letting $\tau_x^\varnothing$, $\tau_x^+$, and $\tau_x^-$ be the rooted spanning tree polynomials obtained respectively by removing an edge in both directions or by forcing the tree to pass through either direction of that edge, the vectors $(\tau_x^\varnothing, \tau_x^+, \tau_x^-)$ are coplanar for all roots $x$. We deploy the result to give an alternative derivation of a recently found mutual linearity of stationary currents of Markov chains. We generalize deletion-constriction and current linearity among two edges, and conjecture that similar results may hold for arbitrary subsets of edges., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

Mixtures of ultracold gases with long-range interactions are expected to open new avenues in the study of quantum matter. Natural candidates for this research are spin mixtures of atomic species with large magnetic moments. However, the lifetime of such assemblies can be strongly affected by the dipolar relaxation that occurs in spin-flip collisions. Here we present experimental results for a mixture composed of the two lowest Zeeman states of $^{162}$Dy atoms, that act as dark states with respect to a light-induced quadratic Zeeman effect. We show that, due to an interference phenomenon, the rate for such inelastic processes is dramatically reduced with respect to the Wigner threshold law. Additionally, we determine the scattering lengths characterizing the s-wave interaction between these states, providing all necessary data to predict the miscibility range of the mixture, depending on its dimensionality.

In non-perturbative non-Markovian open quantum systems, reaching either low temperatures with the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) or high temperatures with the Thermalized Time Evolving Density Operator with Orthogonal Polynomials (T-TEDOPA) formalism in Hilbert space remains challenging. We compare different manners of modeling the environment. Sampling the Fourier transform of the bath correlation function, also called temperature dependent spectral density, proves to be very effective. T-TEDOPA (Tamascelli et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 090402 (2019)) uses a linear chain of oscillators with positive and negative frequencies while HEOM is based on the complex poles of an optimized rational decomposition of the temperature dependent spectral density (Xu et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 230601 (2022)). Resorting to the poles of the temperature independent spectral density and of the Bose function separately is an alternative when the problem due to the huge number of the Bose poles at low temperature is circumvented. Two examples illustrate the effectiveness of the HEOM and T-TEDOPA approaches: a benchmark pure dephasing case and a two-bath model simulating dynamics of excited electronic states coupled through a conical intersection. We show the efficiency of T-TEDOPA to simulate dynamics at a finite temperature by using either continuous spectral densities or only all the intramolecular oscillators of a linear vibronic model calibrated from ab initio data of a phenylene ethynylene dimer., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures and supplemental material

Maximum Manifold Capacity Representations (MMCR) is a recent multi-view self-supervised learning (MVSSL) method that matches or surpasses other leading MVSSL methods. MMCR is intriguing because it does not fit neatly into any of the commonplace MVSSL lineages, instead originating from a statistical mechanical perspective on the linear separability of data manifolds. In this paper, we seek to improve our understanding and our utilization of MMCR. To better understand MMCR, we leverage tools from high dimensional probability to demonstrate that MMCR incentivizes alignment and uniformity of learned embeddings. We then leverage tools from information theory to show that such embeddings maximize a well-known lower bound on mutual information between views, thereby connecting the geometric perspective of MMCR to the information-theoretic perspective commonly discussed in MVSSL. To better utilize MMCR, we mathematically predict and experimentally confirm non-monotonic changes in the pretraining loss akin to double descent but with respect to atypical hyperparameters. We also discover compute scaling laws that enable predicting the pretraining loss as a function of gradients steps, batch size, embedding dimension and number of views. We then show that MMCR, originally applied to image data, is performant on multimodal image-text data. By more deeply understanding the theoretical and empirical behavior of MMCR, our work reveals insights on improving MVSSL methods.

The Moons And Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer (MAJIS) is the visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer onboard ESA s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission. Before its integration into the spacecraft, the instrument undergoes an extensive ground calibration to establish its baseline performances. This process prepares the imaging spectrometer for flight operations by characterizing the behavior of the instrument under various operative conditions and uncovering instrumental distortions that may depend on instrumental commands. Two steps of the on-ground calibration campaigns were held at the instrument level to produce the data. Additional in-flight measurements have recently been obtained after launch during the Near-Earth Commissioning Phase. In this article, we present the analyses of these datasets, focusing on the characterization of the spectral performances. First, we describe and analyze the spectral calibration datasets obtained using both monochromatic sources and polychromatic sources coupled with solid and gas samples. Then, we derive the spectral sampling and the spectral response function over the entire field of view. These spectral characteristics are quantified for various operational parameters of MAJIS, such as temperature and spectral binning. The derived on-ground performances are then compared with in-flight measurements obtained after launch and presented in the framework of the MAJIS performance requirements.

For continuous-time Markov chains and open unimolecular chemical reaction networks, we prove that any two stationary currents are linearly related upon perturbations of a single edge's transition rates, arbitrarily far from equilibrium. We extend the result to non-stationary currents in the frequency domain, provide and discuss an explicit expression for the current-current susceptibility in terms of the network topology, and discuss possible generalizations. In this study, we reexamine a recent optimal control simulation targeting the preparation of a superposition of two excited electronic states in the UV range in a complex molecular system. We revisit this control from the perspective of reinforcement learning, offering an efficient alternative to conventional quantum control methods. The two excited states are addressable by orthogonal polarizations and their superposition corresponds to a right or left localization of the electronic density. The pulse duration spans tens of femtoseconds to prevent excitation of higher excited bright states what leads to a strong perturbation by the nuclear motions. We modify an open source software by L. Giannelli et al., Phys. Lett. A, 434, 128054 (2022) that implements reinforcement learning with Lindblad dynamics, to introduce non-Markovianity of the surrounding either by timedependent rates or more exactly by using the hierarchical equations of motion with the QuTiP-BoFiN package. This extension opens the way to wider applications for non-Markovian environments, in particular when the active system interacts with a highly structured noise., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Polysemantic neurons -- neurons that activate for a set of unrelated features -- have been seen as a significant obstacle towards interpretability of task-optimized deep networks, with implications for AI safety. The classic origin story of polysemanticity is that the data contains more ``features" than neurons, such that learning to perform a task forces the network to co-allocate multiple unrelated features to the same neuron, endangering our ability to understand networks' internal processing. In this work, we present a second and non-mutually exclusive origin story of polysemanticity. We show that polysemanticity can arise incidentally, even when there are ample neurons to represent all features in the data, a phenomenon we term \textit{incidental polysemanticity}. Using a combination of theory and experiments, we show that incidental polysemanticity can arise due to multiple reasons including regularization and neural noise; this incidental polysemanticity occurs because random initialization can, by chance alone, initially assign multiple features to the same neuron, and the training dynamics then strengthen such overlap. Our paper concludes by calling for further research quantifying the performance-polysemanticity tradeoff in task-optimized deep neural networks to better understand to what extent polysemanticity is avoidable.

Dipolar gases like erbium and dysprosium have a dense spectrum of resonant loss features associated with their strong anisotropic interaction potential. These resonances display various behaviours with density and temperature, implying diverse microscopic properties. Here, we quantitatively investigate the low-field ($B < 6\,\text{G}$) loss features in ultracold thermal samples of $^{162}$Dy, revealing two- and three-body dominated loss processes. We investigate their temperature dependence and detect a feature compatible with a $d$-wave Fano-Feshbach resonance, which has not been observed before. We also analyse the expansion of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate as a function of the magnetic field and interpret the changes in size close to the resonances with a variation in the scattering length., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

The type $\tau$($\alpha$) of an irrational number $\alpha$ measures the extent to which rational numbers can closely approximate $\alpha$. More precisely, $\tau$($\alpha$) is the infimum over those t$\in$R for which |$\alpha$--h/k|0. In this paper, we regard the type as a function $\tau$:R\Q$\rightarrow$[1,$\infty$] and explore its descriptive properties. We show that $\tau$ is invariant under the natural action of GL2(Q) on R\Q. We show that $\tau$ is densely onto, and we compute the descriptive complexity of the pre-image of the singletons and of certain intervals. Finally, we show that the function $\tau$ is [1,$\infty$]-upper semi-Baire class 1 complete.

We first consider the class K of graphs on a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space with continuous chromatic number at least three. We provide a concrete basis of size continuum for K made up of countable graphs, comparing them with the quasi-order associated with injective continuous homomorphisms. We prove that the size of such a basis is sharp, using odometers. However, using odometers again, we prove that there is no antichain basis in K, and provide infinite descending chains in K. Our method implies that the equivalence relation of flip conjugacy of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space is Borel reducible to the equivalence relation associated with our quasi-order. We also prove that there is no antichain basis in the class of graphs on a zero-dimensional Polish space with continuous chromatic number at least three. We study the graphs induced by a continuous function, and show that any basis for the class of graphs induced by a homeomorphism of a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space with continuous chromatic number at least three must have size continuum, using odometers or subshifts.

Astronomical precision spectroscopy underpins searches for life beyond Earth, direct observation of the expanding Universe and constraining the potential variability of physical constants across cosmological scales. Laser frequency combs can provide the critically required accurate and precise calibration to the astronomical spectrographs. For cosmological studies, extending the calibration with such astrocombs to the ultraviolet spectral range is highly desirable, however, strong material dispersion and large spectral separation from the established infrared laser oscillators have made this exceedingly challenging. Here, we demonstrate for the first time astronomical spectrograph calibrations with an astrocomb in the ultraviolet spectral range below 400 nm. This is accomplished via chip-integrated highly nonlinear photonics in periodically-poled, nano-fabricated lithium niobate waveguides in conjunction with a robust infrared electro-optic comb generator, as well as a chip-integrated microresonator comb. These results demonstrate a viable route towards astronomical precision spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and may contribute to unlocking the full potential of next generation ground- and future space-based astronomical instruments.

Acolinearity of the annihilation photons observed in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is described as following a Gaussian distribution. However, it is never explicitly said if it refers to the amplitude of the acolinearity angle or its 2D distribution relative to the case without acolinearity (herein defined as the acolinearity deviation). Since the former is obtained by integrating the latter, a wrong interpretation would lead to very different results. The paper of Shibuya et al. (2007), differs from the previous studies since it is based on the precise measurement of the energy of the annihilation photons. They also show that acolinearity follows a Gaussian distribution in the context of PET. However, their notation, which relies on being on the plane where the two annihilation photons travel, could mean that their observation refers to the amplitude of the acolinearity angle. If that understanding is correct, it would mean that acolinearity deviation follows a 2D Gaussian distribution divided by the norm of its argument. Thus, we revisited the proof presented in Shibuya et al. (2007) by using an explicit description of the acolinearity in the 3D unit sphere.

Optical flow provides information on relative motion that is an important component in many computer vision pipelines. Neural networks provide high accuracy optical flow, yet their complexity is often prohibitive for application at the edge or in robots, where efficiency and latency play crucial role. To address this challenge, we build on the latest developments in event-based vision and spiking neural networks. We propose a new network architecture, inspired by Timelens, that improves the state-of-the-art self-supervised optical flow accuracy when operated both in spiking and non-spiking mode. To implement a real-time pipeline with a physical event camera, we propose a methodology for principled model simplification based on activity and latency analysis. We demonstrate high speed optical flow prediction with almost two orders of magnitude reduced complexity while maintaining the accuracy, opening the path for real-time deployments., Comment: Accepted for IEEE CVPRW, Vancouver 2023. Optical identification is often done with spatial or temporal visual pattern recognition and localization. Temporal pattern recognition, depending on the technology, involves a trade-off between communication frequency, range and accurate tracking. We propose a solution with light-emitting beacons that improves this trade-off by exploiting fast event-based cameras and, for tracking, sparse neuromorphic optical flow computed with spiking neurons. The system is embedded in a simulated drone and evaluated in an asset monitoring use case. It is robust to relative movements and enables simultaneous communication with, and tracking of, multiple moving beacons. Finally, in a hardware lab prototype, we demonstrate for the first time beacon tracking performed simultaneously with state-of-the-art frequency communication in the kHz range.

This work is a pedagogical survey about the hierarchical equations of motion and their implementation with the tensor-train format. These equations are a great standard in non-perturbative non-Markovian open quantum systems. They are exact for harmonic baths in the limit of relevant truncation of the hierarchy. We recall the link with the perturbative second order time convolution equations also known as the Bloch-Redfield equations. Some theoretical tools characterizing non-Markovian dynamics such as the non- Markovianity measures or the dynamical map are also briefly discussed in the context of HEOM simulations. The main points of the tensor-train expansion are illustrated in an example with a qubit interacting with a bath described by a Lorentzian spectral density. Finally, we give three illustrative applications in which the system-bath coupling operator is similar to that of the analytical treatment. The first example revisits a model in which population-to-coherence transfer via the bath creates a long-lasting coherence between two states. The second one is devoted to the computation of stationary absorption and emission spectra. We illustrate the link between the spectral density and the Stokes shift in situations with and without nonadiabatic interaction. Finally, we simulate an excitation transfer when the spectral density is discretized by undamped modes to illustrate a situation in which the TT formulation is more efficient than the standard one., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures
