1. A differential model of $N$ player games concerning ethical dilemmas

Abstract: Ethics play an important role in determining the behavior of an individual under certain circumstances. Ethical or unethical behavior can be treated as a strategy of a player in a pay-off game. In this paper, we present two analytical solutions to studying time evolution of behavior of an individual from ethics perspective. We also present the effect of a third player as a perturbation to a two player game and develop a general approach for a $N$ player game. We demonstrate geometric modeling of behavioral characteristics of individuals as polytopes residing in $D$ dimensional space. We treat three player and two player games using set of differential equations that lead to time evolution of phase trajectories which reveal about the interdependencies and self dependencies of each player. 2. Investigating Pulsating Variables and Eclipsing Binaries in NGC 2126 using Ground and Space-based Photometry, Astrometry, Spectroscopy and Modeling

Abstract: Pulsating variables are prevalent in the classical {\delta} Scuti instability strip of intermediate-age open star clusters. The cluster membership of these stars facilitates a comparative analysis of their evolution in analogous environments. In this study, we integrate ground-based observations, TESS Full Frame Images (FFIs), and Gaia DR3 data to investigate variable stars in the intermediate-age open star cluster NGC 2126. We performed ground-based time-series observations of NGC 2126 to identify variable stars within its vicinity. Next, we determined the membership of these stars using parallax and the proper motions from Gaia DR3 archive. Then, we searched the TESS Full Frame Images (FFIs) for counterparts to the variables identified above and performed their frequency analysis and classification. Finally, we modeled the light curves (LCs) of detected eclipsing binaries (EBs), including V551 Aur, which has a pulsating component. We found 25 members and 85 field variable stars. In TESS FFIs, we found LCs for 11 known variables and a new rotational variable. We determined that the pulsating EB V551 Aur is a member of the cluster. The low- and medium-resolution spectra revealed the line profile variation and the basic parameters for the star, respectively. Simultaneous modeling of the eclipses and the embedded pulsations resulted in improved orbital parameters for the binary system. 3. Hybrid Deep Learning Model for Multiple Cache Side Channel Attacks Detection: A Comparative Analysis

Abstract: Cache side channel attacks are a sophisticated and persistent threat that exploit vulnerabilities in modern processors to extract sensitive information. These attacks leverage weaknesses in shared computational resources, particularly the last level cache, to infer patterns in data access and execution flows, often bypassing traditional security defenses. Such attacks are especially dangerous as they can be executed remotely without requiring physical access to the victim's device. This study focuses on a specific class of these threats: fingerprinting attacks, where an adversary monitors and analyzes the behavior of co-located processes via cache side channels. This can potentially reveal confidential information, such as encryption keys or user activity patterns. A comprehensive threat model illustrates how attackers sharing computational resources with target systems exploit these side channels to compromise sensitive data. To mitigate such risks, a hybrid deep learning model is proposed for detecting cache side channel attacks. Its performance is compared with five widely used deep learning models: Multi-Layer Perceptron, Convolutional Neural Network, Simple Recurrent Neural Network, Long Short-Term Memory, and Gated Recurrent Unit. The experimental results demonstrate that the hybrid model achieves a detection rate of up to 99.96%. These findings highlight the limitations of existing models, the need for enhanced defensive mechanisms, and directions for future research to secure sensitive data against evolving side channel threats., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. 4. Measuring full counting statistics in a quantum simulator

Abstract: In quantum mechanics, the probability distribution function (PDF) and full counting statistics (FCS) play a fundamental role in characterizing the fluctuations of quantum observables, as they encode the complete information about these fluctuations. In this letter, we measure these two quantities in a trapped-ion quantum simulator for the transverse and longitudinal magnetization within a subsystem. We utilize the toolbox of classical shadows to postprocess the measurements performed in random bases. The measurement scheme efficiently allows access to the FCS and PDF of all possible operators on desired choices of subsystems of an extended quantum system., Comment: 11 pages with references, 9 figures

5. MM-GEN: Enhancing Task Performance Through Targeted Multimodal Data Curation

Abstract: Vision-language models (VLMs) are highly effective but often underperform on specialized tasks; for example, Llava-1.5 struggles with chart and diagram understanding due to scarce task-specific training data. Existing training data, sourced from general-purpose datasets, fails to capture the nuanced details needed for these tasks. We introduce MM-Gen, a scalable method that generates task-specific, high-quality synthetic text for candidate images by leveraging stronger models. MM-Gen employs a three-stage targeted process: partitioning data into subgroups, generating targeted text based on task descriptions, and filtering out redundant and outlier data. Fine-tuning VLMs with data generated by MM-Gen leads to significant performance gains, including 29% on spatial reasoning and 15% on diagram understanding for Llava-1.5 (7B). Compared to human-curated caption data, MM-Gen achieves up to 1.6x better improvements for the original models, proving its effectiveness in enhancing task-specific VLM performance and bridging the gap between general-purpose datasets and specialized requirements. 6. Robotic Compliant Object Prying Using Diffusion Policy Guided by Vision and Force Observations

Abstract: The growing adoption of batteries in the electric vehicle industry and various consumer products has created an urgent need for effective recycling solutions. These products often contain a mix of compliant and rigid components, making robotic disassembly a critical step toward achieving scalable recycling processes. Diffusion policy has emerged as a promising approach for learning low-level skills in robotics. To effectively apply diffusion policy to contact-rich tasks, incorporating force as feedback is essential. In this paper, we apply diffusion policy with vision and force in a compliant object prying task. However, when combining low-dimensional contact force with high-dimensional image, the force information may be diluted. To address this issue, we propose a method that effectively integrates force with image data for diffusion policy observations. We validate our approach on a battery prying task that demands high precision and multi-step execution. Our model achieves a 96\% success rate in diverse scenarios, marking a 57\% improvement over the vision-only baseline. Our method also demonstrates zero-shot transfer capability to handle unseen objects and battery types. 7. All-atom Diffusion Transformers: Unified generative modelling of molecules and materials

Abstract: Diffusion models are the standard toolkit for generative modelling of 3D atomic systems. However, for different types of atomic systems - such as molecules and materials - the generative processes are usually highly specific to the target system despite the underlying physics being the same. We introduce the All-atom Diffusion Transformer (ADiT), a unified latent diffusion framework for jointly generating both periodic materials and non-periodic molecular systems using the same model: (1) An autoencoder maps a unified, all-atom representations of molecules and materials to a shared latent embedding space; and (2) A diffusion model is trained to generate new latent embeddings that the autoencoder can decode to sample new molecules or materials. Experiments on QM9 and MP20 datasets demonstrate that jointly trained ADiT generates realistic and valid molecules as well as materials, exceeding state-of-the-art results from molecule and crystal-specific models. ADiT uses standard Transformers for both the autoencoder and diffusion model, resulting in significant speedups during training and inference compared to equivariant diffusion models. Scaling ADiT up to half a billion parameters predictably improves performance, representing a step towards broadly generalizable foundation models for generative chemistry. 8. Acoustic phonon phase gates with number-resolving phonon detection

Abstract: Linear optical quantum computing (LOQC) provides a compelling approach to quantum information processing, with a short list of physical requirements; however, experimental implementations have faced significant challenges. Itinerant phonons in quantum acoustics, combined with superconducting qubits, offer a compelling alternative to the quantum optics approach. Here we demonstrate key advances in the ability to manipulate and measure acoustic phonon quantum states: First, we demonstrate deterministic phase control of itinerant one- and two-phonon qubit states, measured using an acoustic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We implement phonon phase control using the frequency-dependent scattering of phonon states from a superconducting transmon qubit. The acoustic interferometer used to measure the resulting phonon phase achieves a noise-floor-limited Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference visibility of 98.1%, representing a significant improvement over our previous demonstration. Additionally, we propose and implement a multi-phonon detection scheme that enables coherent conversion between itinerant one- and two-phonon Fock states and transmon qutrit states, transforming for example the Hong-Ou-Mandel two-phonon entangled output state $|02\rangle - |20\rangle$ into the entangled state of two transmons. The tight integration of quantum acoustics with superconducting circuits native to our implementation promises further advances, including deterministic phonon quantum gates with direct applications to quantum computing.

Abstract: The branching fraction of the decay $B^+\to \psi(2S)\phi(1020)K^+$, relative to the topologically similar decay $B^+\to J/\psi \phi(1020) K^+$, is measured using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The ratio is found to be $0.061 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.009$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract: Primary cosmic rays when interact with our atmosphere, produce a cascade of lighter secondary particles namely pion, kaon, neutrons, muons, electrons, positrons and neutrinos. Muons are one of the most abundant and easily detectable particles at the ground surface using a large variety of particle detectors. Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) of 2 m x 2 m in dimension were developed to be used in large scale as the active detector elements in the Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) which was planned to be built by the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO). As a spin-off of this work, a portable stack of eight, one square foot RPC detectors is developed. While the main purpose of this Cosmic Muon Tracker (CMT) detector is training of students, outreach and science popularisation, it could also be used to conduct small-scale particle detector experiments. We will discuss design, integration, characterisation and some of the applications of this detector in this paper.

Adapted from the LLaMA-3.1-8B model, Sherkala-Chat (8B) is trained on 45.3B tokens across Kazakh, English, Russian, and Turkish. 12. Tackling Hallucination from Conditional Models for Medical Image Reconstruction with DynamicDPS

Abstract: Hallucinations are spurious structures not present in the ground truth, posing a critical challenge in medical image reconstruction, especially for data-driven conditional models. We hypothesize that combining an unconditional diffusion model with data consistency, trained on a diverse dataset, can reduce these hallucinations. Based on this, we propose DynamicDPS, a diffusion-based framework that integrates conditional and unconditional diffusion models to enhance low-quality medical images while systematically reducing hallucinations. Our approach first generates an initial reconstruction using a conditional model, then refines it with an adaptive diffusion-based inverse problem solver. DynamicDPS skips early stage in the reverse process by selecting an optimal starting time point per sample and applies Wolfe's line search for adaptive step sizes, improving both efficiency and image fidelity. Using diffusion priors and data consistency, our method effectively reduces hallucinations from any conditional model output. We validate its effectiveness in Image Quality Transfer for low-field MRI enhancement. Extensive evaluations on synthetic and real MR scans, including a downstream task for tissue volume estimation, show that DynamicDPS reduces hallucinations, improving relative volume estimation by over 15% for critical tissues while using only 5% of the sampling steps required by baseline diffusion models. As a model-agnostic and fine-tuning-free approach, DynamicDPS offers a robust solution for hallucination reduction in medical imaging. The code will be made publicly available upon publication.

13. One-Shot Gesture Recognition for Underwater Diver-To-Robot Communication

Abstract: Reliable human-robot communication is essential for underwater human-robot interaction (U-HRI), yet traditional methods such as acoustic signaling and predefined gesture-based models suffer from limitations in adaptability and robustness. In this work, we propose One-Shot Gesture Recognition (OSG), a novel method that enables real-time, pose-based, temporal gesture recognition underwater from a single demonstration, eliminating the need for extensive dataset collection or model retraining. OSG leverages shape-based classification techniques, including Hu moments, Zernike moments, and Fourier descriptors, to robustly recognize gestures in visually-challenging underwater environments. Our system achieves high accuracy on real-world underwater data and operates efficiently on embedded hardware commonly found on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), demonstrating its feasibility for deployment on-board robots. Compared to deep learning approaches, OSG is lightweight, computationally efficient, and highly adaptable, making it ideal for diver-to-robot communication. We evaluate OSG's performance on an augmented gesture dataset and real-world underwater video data, comparing its accuracy against deep learning methods. Abstract: In the current information era, customer analytics play a key role in the success of any business. Since customer demographics primarily dictate their preferences, identification and utilization of age & gender information of customers in sales forecasting, may maximize retail sales. In this work, we propose a computer vision based approach to age and gender prediction in surveillance video. The proposed approach leverage the effectiveness of Wide Residual Networks and Xception deep learning models to predict age and gender demographics of the consumers. The proposed approach is designed to work with raw video captured in a typical CCTV video surveillance system. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated on real-life garment store surveillance video, which is captured by low resolution camera, under non-uniform illumination, with occlusions due to crowding, and environmental noise. The system can also detect customer facial expressions during purchase in addition to demographics, that can be utilized to devise effective marketing strategies for their customer base, to maximize sales.

Abstract: The analysis of sales information, is a vital step in designing an effective marketing strategy. This work proposes a novel approach to analyse the shopping behaviour of customers to identify their purchase patterns. An extended version of the Multi-Cluster Overlapping k-Means Extension (MCOKE) algorithm with weighted k-Means algorithm is utilized to map customers to the garments of interest. The age & gender traits of the customer; the time spent and the expressions exhibited while selecting garments for purchase, are utilized to associate a customer or a group of customers to a garments they are interested in. Such study on the customer base of a retail business, may help in inferring the products of interest of their consumers, and enable them in developing effective business strategies, thus ensuring customer satisfaction, loyalty, increased sales and profits.

Abstract: One of the basic requirements of humans is clothing and this approach aims to identify the garments selected by customer during shopping, from surveillance video. The existing approaches to detect garments were developed on western wear using datasets of western clothing. They do not address Indian garments due to the increased complexity. In this work, we propose a computer vision based framework to address this problem through video surveillance. The proposed framework uses the Mixture of Gaussians background subtraction algorithm to identify the foreground present in a video frame. The visual information present in this foreground is analysed using computer vision techniques such as image segmentation to detect the various garments, the customer is interested in. The framework was tested on a dataset, that comprises of CCTV videos from a garments store. When presented with raw surveillance footage, the proposed framework demonstrated its effectiveness in detecting the interest of customer in choosing their garments by achieving a high precision and recall.

Abstract: This article presents a higher-order spectral element method for the two-dimensional Stokes interface problem involving a piecewise constant viscosity coefficient. The proposed numerical formulation is based on least-squares formulation. The mesh is aligned with the interface, and the interface is completely resolved using blending element functions. The higher-order spectral element functions are nonconforming, and the same-order approximation is used for both velocity and pressure variables. The interface conditions are added to the minimizing functional in appropriate Sobolev norms. Stability and error estimates are proven. The proposed method is shown to be exponentially accurate in both velocity and pressure variables. 18. Dynamic Photometric Variability in Three Young Brown Dwarfs in Taurus: Detection of Optical Flares with TESS data

Abstract: We present $I$-band time-series photometric variability studies of three known nearby ($\sim$ 140 pc) and young ( $\sim$ 1 Myr) brown dwarfs (BD) in the Taurus star-forming region in the Perseus Molecular Cloud. From 10 nights of observations over a time span of 10 years, with a typical run of 3 to 6 hours each night, we estimated that the BDs show unstable short-scale periodicity from 1.5 to 4.8 hours. Using the long-term photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), we have conducted a time-resolved variability analysis of CFHT-BD-Tau 3 and CFHT-BD-Tau 4, revealing orbital periods of $\sim$ 0.96 days and $\sim$ 3 days respectively, consistent with earlier studies. We also found two superflares in TESS sector 43 data for CFHT-BD-Tau 4 and estimated the flare energies as $7.09\times10^{35}$ erg and $3.75\times10^{36}$ erg. A magnetic field of $\sim3.39 ~kG$ is required to generate such flare energies on this BD. We performed spot modelling analysis on CFHT-BD-Tau 3 and CFHT-BD-Tau 4 to address the variability detected in the data using the package BASSMAN. Spectral energy distribution and infrared colours of the sources suggest that they have a sufficient amount of circumstellar material around them.

Abstract: The $\Xi_c^+ \pi^- \pi^+$ spectrum is investigated using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016--2018. Four states are observed with high significance, and their masses and widths are measured to be \begin{align*} m[\Xi_c(2815)^{+}] &= 2816.65 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.23 ~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(2815)^{+}] &= 2.07 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.12~\text{MeV},\\[5pt] m[\Xi_c(2923)^{+}] &= 2922.8 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.2~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(2923)^{+}] &= 5.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.4~\text{MeV},\\[5pt] m[\Xi_c(2970)^{+}] &= 2968.6 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.2~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(2970)^{+}] &= 31.7 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.9~\text{MeV},\\[5pt] m[\Xi_c(3080)^{+}] &= 3076.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 1.3 \pm 0.2~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(3080)^{+}] &= 6.8 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.9~\text{MeV}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited precision on the $\Xi_c^+$ mass, respectively. The $\Xi_c(2923)^{+}$ baryon is observed for the first time, and is consistent with being the isospin partner of the previously observed $\Xi_c(2923)^{0}$ state. 20. The Birth of a Major Coronal Mass Ejection with Intricate Magnetic Structure from Multiple Active Regions

Abstract: Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the eruptions of magnetised plasma from the Sun and are considered the main driver of adverse space weather events. Hence, undrstanding its formation process, particularly the magnetic topology, is critical for accurate space weather prediction. Here, based on imaging observations and three-dimensional (3D) data-constrained thermodynamic magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulation in spherical coordinates, we exhibit the birth of a CME with intricate magnetic structure from multiple active regions (ARs) due to 3D magnetic reconnection. It is observed as a coronal jet between active regions, accompanied by the back-flowing of filament materials along the jet spine after the passage of the eruptive filament. This jet connects two dimming regions within different active regions. This is an observational proxy of 3D magnetic reconnection between the CME flux rope and the null-point magnetic field lines crossing active regions. Hereafter, the thermodynamic data-constrained MHD simulation successfully reproduces the observed jet and the reconnection process that flux ropes partake in, leading to a CME flux rope with a complex magnetic structure distinct from its progenitor. The generality of this scenario is then validated by data-inspired MHD simulations in a simple multipolar magnetic configuration. This work demonstrates the role of multiple active regions in forming CMEs with intricate magnetic structures. On the one hand, a non-coherent flux rope where not all twisted magnetic field lines wind around one common axis is naturally formed. 21. Measurement of energy reduction by inertial Alfv\'en waves propagating through parallel gradients in the Alfv\'en speed

Abstract: We have studied the propagation of inertial Alfv\'en waves through parallel gradients in the Alfv\'en speed using the Large Plasma Device at the University of California, Los Angeles. The reflection and transmission of Alfv\'en waves through inhomogeneities in the background plasma is important for understanding wave propagation, turbulence, and heating in space, laboratory, and astrophysical plasmas. Here we \rev{present inertial Alfv\'en waves, under conditions relevant to solar flares and the solar corona. We find} that the transmission of the inertial Alfv\'en waves is reduced as the sharpness of the gradient is increased. Any reflected waves were below the detection limit of our experiment and reflection cannot account for all of the energy not transmitted through the gradient. Our findings indicate that, for both kinetic and inertial Alfv\'en waves, the controlling parameter for the transmission of the waves through an Alfv\'en speed gradient is the ratio of the Alfv\'en wavelength along the gradient divided by the scale length of the gradient. Furthermore, our results suggest that an as-yet-unidentified damping process occurs in the gradient.

22. LawPal : A Retrieval Augmented Generation Based System for Enhanced Legal Accessibility in India

Abstract: Access to legal knowledge in India is often hindered by a lack of awareness, misinformation and limited accessibility to judicial resources. Many individuals struggle to navigate complex legal frameworks, leading to the frequent misuse of laws and inadequate legal protection. To address these issues, we propose a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-based legal chatbot powered by vectorstore oriented FAISS for efficient and accurate legal information retrieval. Unlike traditional chatbots, our model is trained using an extensive dataset comprising legal books, official documentation and the Indian Constitution, ensuring accurate responses to even the most complex or misleading legal queries. The chatbot leverages FAISS for rapid vector-based search, significantly improving retrieval speed and accuracy. It is also prompt-engineered to handle twisted or ambiguous legal questions, reducing the chances of incorrect interpretations. Apart from its core functionality of answering legal queries, the platform includes additional features such as real-time legal news updates, legal blogs, and access to law-related books, making it a comprehensive resource for users. By integrating advanced AI techniques with an optimized retrieval system, our chatbot aims to democratize legal knowledge, enhance legal literacy, and prevent the spread of misinformation. The study demonstrates that our approach effectively improves legal accessibility while maintaining high accuracy and efficiency, thereby contributing to a more informed and empowered society.

23. MHQA: A Diverse, Knowledge Intensive Mental Health Question Answering Challenge for Language Models

Abstract: Mental health remains a challenging problem all over the world, with issues like depression, anxiety becoming increasingly common. Large Language Models (LLMs) have seen a vast application in healthcare, specifically in answering medical questions. However, there is a lack of standard benchmarking datasets for question answering (QA) in mental health. Our work presents a novel multiple choice dataset, MHQA (Mental Health Question Answering), for benchmarking Language models (LMs). Previous mental health datasets have focused primarily on text classification into specific labels or disorders. MHQA, on the other hand, presents question-answering for mental health focused on four key domains: anxiety, depression, trauma, and obsessive/compulsive issues, with diverse question types, namely, factoid, diagnostic, prognostic, and preventive. We use PubMed abstracts as the primary source for QA. We develop a rigorous pipeline for LLM-based identification of information from abstracts based on various selection criteria and converting it into QA pairs. Further, valid QA pairs are extracted based on post-hoc validation criteria. Overall, our MHQA dataset consists of 2,475 expert-verified gold standard instances called MHQA-gold and ~56.1k pairs pseudo labeled using external medical references. We report F1 scores on different LLMs along with few-shot and supervised fine-tuning experiments, further discussing the insights for the scores.

24. A BERT Based Hybrid Recommendation System For Academic Collaboration

Abstract: Universities serve as a hub for academic collaboration, promoting the exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives among students and faculty through interdisciplinary dialogue. However, as universities expand in size, conventional networking approaches via student chapters, class groups, and faculty committees become cumbersome. To address this challenge, an academia-specific profile recommendation system is proposed to connect like-minded stakeholders within any university community. This study evaluates three techniques: Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), and a hybrid approach to generate effective recommendations. Due to the unlabelled nature of the dataset, Affinity Propagation cluster-based relabelling is performed to understand the grouping of similar profiles. The hybrid model demonstrated superior performance, evidenced by its similarity score, Silhouette score, Davies-Bouldin index, and Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain (NDCG), achieving an optimal balance between diversity and relevance in recommendations. Furthermore, the optimal model has been implemented as a mobile application, which dynamically suggests relevant profiles based on users' skills and collaboration interests, incorporating contextual understanding. Abstract: Birth weight serves as a fundamental indicator of neonatal health, closely linked to both early medical interventions and long-term developmental risks. Traditional predictive models, often constrained by limited feature selection and incomplete datasets, struggle to achieve overlooking complex maternal and fetal interactions in diverse clinical settings. This research explores machine learning to address these limitations, utilizing a structured methodology that integrates advanced imputation strategies, supervised feature selection techniques, and predictive modeling. Given the constraints of the dataset, the research strengthens the role of data preprocessing in improving the model performance. Among the various methodologies explored, tree-based feature selection methods demonstrated superior capability in identifying the most relevant predictors, while ensemble-based regression models proved highly effective in capturing non-linear relationships and complex maternal-fetal interactions within the data. Beyond model performance, the study highlights the clinical significance of key physiological determinants, offering insights into maternal and fetal health factors that influence birth weight, offering insights that extend over statistical modeling. By bridging computational intelligence with perinatal research, this work underscores the transformative role of machine learning in enhancing predictive accuracy, refining risk assessment and informing data-driven decision-making in maternal and neonatal care. 26. Instruction Tuning on Public Government and Cultural Data for Low-Resource Language: a Case Study in Kazakh

Abstract: Instruction tuning in low-resource languages remains underexplored due to limited text data, particularly in government and cultural domains. To address this, we introduce and open-source a large-scale (10,600 samples) instruction-following (IFT) dataset, covering key institutional and cultural knowledge relevant to Kazakhstan. Our dataset enhances LLMs' understanding of procedural, legal, and structural governance topics. We employ LLM-assisted data generation, comparing open-weight and closed-weight models for dataset construction, and select GPT-4o as the backbone. Each entity of our dataset undergoes full manual verification to ensure high quality. We also show that fine-tuning Qwen, Falcon, and Gemma on our dataset leads to consistent performance improvements in both multiple-choice and generative tasks, demonstrating the potential of LLM-assisted instruction tuning for low-resource languages.

27. Think Inside the JSON: Reinforcement Strategy for Strict LLM Schema Adherence

Abstract: In this paper, we address the challenge of enforcing strict schema adherence in large language model (LLM) generation by leveraging LLM reasoning capabilities. Building on the DeepSeek R1 reinforcement learning framework, our approach trains structured reasoning skills of a 1.5B parameter model through a novel pipeline that combines synthetic reasoning dataset construction with custom reward functions under Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). Specifically, we first perform R1 reinforcement learning on a 20K sample unstructured-to-structured dataset, mirroring the original DeepSeek R1 methods, to establish core reasoning abilities. Subsequently, we performed supervised fine-tuning on a separate 10K reasoning sample dataset, focusing on refining schema adherence for downstream tasks. Despite the relatively modest training scope, requiring approximately 20 hours on an 8xH100 GPU cluster for GRPO training and 3 hours on 1xA100 for SFT, our model demonstrates robust performance in enforcing schema consistency. We compare our ThinkJSON approach against the original DeepSeek R1 (671B), distilled versions of DeepSeek R1 (Qwen-1.5B and Qwen-7B), and Gemini 2.0 Flash (70B), showcasing its effectiveness in real-world applications. Our results underscore the practical utility of a resource-efficient framework for schema-constrained text generation.

28. Likelihood-Ratio Regularized Quantile Regression: Adapting Conformal Prediction to High-Dimensional Covariate Shifts

Abstract: We consider the problem of conformal prediction under covariate shift. Given labeled data from a source domain and unlabeled data from a covariate shifted target domain, we seek to construct prediction sets with valid marginal coverage in the target domain. Most existing methods require estimating the unknown likelihood ratio function, which can be prohibitive for high-dimensional data such as images. To address this challenge, we introduce the likelihood ratio regularized quantile regression (LR-QR) algorithm, which combines the pinball loss with a novel choice of regularization in order to construct a threshold function without directly estimating the unknown likelihood ratio. We show that the LR-QR method has coverage at the desired level in the target domain, up to a small error term that we can control. Our proofs draw on a novel analysis of coverage via stability bounds from learning theory. Our experiments demonstrate that the LR-QR algorithm outperforms existing methods on high-dimensional prediction tasks, including a regression task for the Communities and Crime dataset, and an image classification task from the WILDS repository.

29. Towards Mechanistic Interpretability of Graph Transformers via Attention Graphs

Abstract: We introduce Attention Graphs, a new tool for mechanistic interpretability of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and Graph Transformers based on the mathematical equivalence between message passing in GNNs and the self-attention mechanism in Transformers. Attention Graphs aggregate attention matrices across Transformer layers and heads to describe how information flows among input nodes. Through experiments on homophilous and heterophilous node classification tasks, we analyze Attention Graphs from a network science perspective and find that: (1) When Graph Transformers are allowed to learn the optimal graph structure using all-to-all attention among input nodes, the Attention Graphs learned by the model do not tend to correlate with the input/original graph structure; and (2) For heterophilous graphs, different Graph Transformer variants can achieve similar performance while utilising distinct information flow patterns. 30. Constraining Statistical Isotropy using 21cm Power Spectrum and Bispectrum

Abstract: The Cosmological Principle states that the universe is statistically isotropic and homogeneous on large length scales, typically $\gtrsim 70$Mpc. A detection of significant deviation would help us falsify the simplest models of inflation. In this regard, there are potential indications of departures from this principle, e.g., observations from WMAP and Planck show signs of a preferred direction in the temperature fluctuations known as hemispherical asymmetry in CMB. Phenomenologically, this has been studied using a dipole modulation model. In addition to this, a number of possible mechanisms have been proposed in the literature to explain this anomaly. Some of these scenarios generate dipolar asymmetry or predict quadrupolar asymmetry in the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations. In this paper, we study both these asymmetries. To fulfill the objective, we employ 21cm intensity mapping technique post during post-reionization era, i.e., $z\lesssim 7$. We apply Fisher formalism to constrain dipolar and quadrupolar anisotropy parameters using both 21cm power and bispectra and give forecasts for three intensity mapping surveys: SKA-Mid, HIRAX and PUMA. Although 21cm intensity mapping is a very promising cosmological probe, the signals are severely affected by foregrounds. To mitigate the foreground effects, we use foreground avoidance approach. For the interferometer mode of operation, we also include the wedge effect. From our analysis, we find that PUMA, on account of its high redshift range is able to constrain both dipolar and quadrupolar parameters to better than $\sim 10^{-3}$ for redshifts $z \gtrsim 1$. This is one order of magnitude better constraints as compared to those provided by the latest CMB surveys. We also find that as compared to power spectrum, the constraining power of bispectrum is more sensitive towards foregrounds.

31. Identifiable Steering via Sparse Autoencoding of Multi-Concept Shifts

Abstract: Steering methods manipulate the representations of large language models (LLMs) to induce responses that have desired properties, e.g., truthfulness, offering a promising approach for LLM alignment without the need for fine-tuning. Traditionally, steering has relied on supervision, such as from contrastive pairs of prompts that vary in a single target concept, which is costly to obtain and limits the speed of steering research. An appealing alternative is to use unsupervised approaches such as sparse autoencoders (SAEs) to map LLM embeddings to sparse representations that capture human-interpretable concepts. However, without further assumptions, SAEs may not be identifiable: they could learn latent dimensions that entangle multiple concepts, leading to unintentional steering of unrelated properties. We introduce Sparse Shift Autoencoders (SSAEs) that instead map the differences between embeddings to sparse representations. Crucially, we show that SSAEs are identifiable from paired observations that vary in \textit{multiple unknown concepts}, leading to accurate steering of single concepts without the need for supervision. Abstract: An angular analysis of $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}e^{+}e^{-}$ decays is presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis is performed in the region of the dilepton invariant mass squared of 1.1-6.0 GeV$^{2}/c^{4}$. In addition, a test of lepton flavour universality is performed by comparing the obtained angular observables with those measured in $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decays. In general, the angular observables are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations as well as with global analyses of other $b \rightarrow s \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ processes, where $\ell$ is either a muon or an electron. Abstract: We introduce Granite Vision, a lightweight large language model with vision capabilities, specifically designed to excel in enterprise use cases, particularly in visual document understanding. Our model is trained on a comprehensive instruction-following dataset, including document-related tasks, such as content extraction from tables, charts, diagrams, sketches, and infographics, as well as general image tasks. The architecture of Granite Vision is centered around visual modality alignment with a decoder-only, 2 billion parameter Granite large language model. Additionally, we introduce a dedicated safety classification approach in test-time that leverages a sparse set of attention vectors to identify potential harmful inputs. Despite its lightweight architecture, Granite Vision achieves strong results in standard benchmarks related to visual document understanding, as well as on the LiveXiv benchmark, which is designed to avoid test set contamination by using a constantly updated corpus of recently published Arxiv papers. We are releasing the model under the Apache-2 license, allowing for both research and commercial use, while offering complete visibility into the training data and other relevant details. 34. Evidence of magnetoelastic coupling and magnetic phase coexistence in Mn$_{1.7}$Fe$_{1.3}$Si Heusler Alloy

Abstract: Noncollinear metallic antiferromagnets, with their rapid spin dynamics, efficient spin transport, and distinctive spin textures, play a pivotal role in advancing the field of spintronics. In this study, we report a comprehensive investigation of the structural, magnetic, and transport properties of cubic Mn$_{1.7}$Fe$_{1.3}$Si Heusler compound. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurement reveals a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at $T_C$ = 85 K, followed by a spin reorientation transition. Neutron diffraction data, analyzed as a function of temperature, demonstrates that the occurrence of a spin-reorientation transition is accompanied by magnetoelastic coupling, as evidenced by a change in unit cell volume below $T_C$. Magnetic structure refinement of the low-temperature neutron powder diffraction data confirms the canted antiferromagnetic ordering below 55 K. The metallic nature of the sample is confirmed by the gradual decrease in the $\rho$(T) with decreasing temperature. At low temperatures, a field-induced metamgnetic transition is observed in both, magnetization and magneto-transport measurements. The $H-T$ phase diagram shows a phase-coexistence region emerging at low temperatures for H $<$ 2.5 T. These findings provide valuable insights into the magnetic and transport behavior of the Heusler compounds, underscoring their potential for spintronic applications., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

35. Confinement suppresses the effect of rotation on convection

Abstract: We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) to study the effect of bi-lateral confinement, i.e., the effect of aspect ratio, on the Rayleigh number (Ra) for the onset of wall-mode convection ($Ra_{wm}$) in rotating Rayleigh-B\'enard convection (RBC) for various Ekman number E ($10^{-2}{\le}E{\le}10^{-5}$) and aspect ratio ${\Gamma}$ ($0.08{\le}{\Gamma}{\le}5$). For a given E, as the aspect ratio is lowered from a large value, $Ra_{wm}$ initially decreases slowly, reaching a minimum at ${\Gamma}={\Gamma}_{min}$ (${\Gamma}_{min}{\sim}E^{0.09}$). As ${\Gamma}$ is decreased further below ${\Gamma}_{min}$, $Ra_{wm}$ increases rapidly and for sufficiently strong confinement, i.e., ${\Gamma}<{\Gamma}_{\ast}$ (${\Gamma}_{\ast}{\sim}E^{\frac{1}{3}}$), becomes indistinguishable from $Ra_{c}$, the critical Rayleigh number for non-rotating RBC, at the same ${\Gamma}$. We designate the ranges ${\Gamma}_{min}<{\Gamma}<5$ as the 'confinement-affected' regime and ${\Gamma}<{\Gamma}_{\ast}$ as the 'spatially constrained' regime. For a given rotation rate, the spatially constrained regime extends to higher Ra as the aspect ratio is decreased. We propose that in this regime, strong lateral confinement suppresses the horizontal velocity, and hence the Coriolis force, rendering rotation ineffective over most of the domain., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

36. Systematic Knowledge Injection into Large Language Models via Diverse Augmentation for Domain-Specific RAG

Abstract: Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has emerged as a prominent method for incorporating domain knowledge into Large Language Models (LLMs). While RAG enhances response relevance by incorporating retrieved domain knowledge in the context, retrieval errors can still lead to hallucinations and incorrect answers. To recover from retriever failures, domain knowledge is injected by fine-tuning the model to generate the correct response, even in the case of retrieval errors. However, we observe that without systematic knowledge augmentation, fine-tuned LLMs may memorize new information but still fail to extract relevant domain knowledge, leading to poor performance. In this work, we present a novel framework that significantly enhances the fine-tuning process by augmenting the training data in two ways -- context augmentation and knowledge paraphrasing. In context augmentation, we create multiple training samples for a given QA pair by varying the relevance of the retrieved information, teaching the model when to ignore and when to rely on retrieved content. In knowledge paraphrasing, we fine-tune with multiple answers to the same question, enabling LLMs to better internalize specialized knowledge. To mitigate catastrophic forgetting due to fine-tuning, we add a domain-specific identifier to a question and also utilize a replay buffer containing general QA pairs. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our method over existing techniques, achieving up to 10\% relative gain in token-level recall while preserving the LLM's generalization capabilities., Comment: 22 pages, 14 tables, to be published in NAACL 2025

37. Selective Self-to-Supervised Fine-Tuning for Generalization in Large Language Models

Abstract: Fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) on specific datasets is a common practice to improve performance on target tasks. However, this performance gain often leads to overfitting, where the model becomes too specialized in either the task or the characteristics of the training data, resulting in a loss of generalization. This paper introduces Selective Self-to-Supervised Fine-Tuning (S3FT), a fine-tuning approach that achieves better performance than the standard supervised fine-tuning (SFT) while improving generalization. S3FT leverages the existence of multiple valid responses to a query. By utilizing the model's correct responses, S3FT reduces model specialization during the fine-tuning stage. S3FT first identifies the correct model responses from the training set by deploying an appropriate judge. Then, it fine-tunes the model using the correct model responses and the gold response (or its paraphrase) for the remaining samples. The effectiveness of S3FT is demonstrated through experiments on mathematical reasoning, Python programming and reading comprehension tasks. The results show that standard SFT can lead to an average performance drop of up to $4.4$ on multiple benchmarks, such as MMLU and TruthfulQA. 38. Initialization Matters: Unraveling the Impact of Pre-Training on Federated Learning

Abstract: Initializing with pre-trained models when learning on downstream tasks is becoming standard practice in machine learning. Several recent works explore the benefits of pre-trained initialization in a federated learning (FL) setting, where the downstream training is performed at the edge clients with heterogeneous data distribution. These works show that starting from a pre-trained model can substantially reduce the adverse impact of data heterogeneity on the test performance of a model trained in a federated setting, with no changes to the standard FedAvg training algorithm. In this work, we provide a deeper theoretical understanding of this phenomenon. To do so, we study the class of two-layer convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and provide bounds on the training error convergence and test error of such a network trained with FedAvg. We introduce the notion of aligned and misaligned filters at initialization and show that the data heterogeneity only affects learning on misaligned filters. Starting with a pre-trained model typically results in fewer misaligned filters at initialization, thus producing a lower test error even when the model is trained in a federated setting with data heterogeneity. Abstract: The core focus of this research work is to obtain invariant solutions and conservation laws of the (3+1) dimensional ZK equation which describes the phenomenon of wave stability and solitons propagation. ZK equation is significant in fluid dynamics, nonlinear optics, and acoustics. ZK equation plays an important role in understanding the behavior of nonlinear, dispersive waves especially in the presence of the magnetic field. Lie symmetry analysis has been applied to the (3+1)-dimensional ZK equation to derive invariant solutions. These solutions disclose how waves retain their shape as they travel, how they interact in space, and the impact of magnetic fields on wave propagation. Using the Lie symmetry, (3+1)-dimensional ZK equation reduces into various ordinary differential equations. 40. Dynamics and clustering of sedimenting disc lattices

Abstract: Uniform arrays of particles tend to cluster as they sediment in viscous fluids. Shape anisotropy of the particles enriches these dynamics by modifying the mode-structure and the resulting instabilities of the array. A one-dimensional lattice of sedimenting spheroids in the Stokesian regime displays either an exponential or an algebraic rate of clustering depending on the initial lattice spacing (Chajwa et al. 2020). This is caused by an interplay between the Crowley mechanism which promotes clumping, and a shape-induced drift mechanism which subdues it. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the sedimentation dynamics of one-dimensional lattices of oblate spheroids or discs and show a stark difference in clustering behaviour: the Crowley mechanism results in clumps comprised of several spheroids, whereas the drift mechanism results in pairs of spheroids whose asymptotic behavior is determined by pair-hydrodynamic interactions. We find that a Stokeslet, or point-particle, approximation is insufficient to accurately describe the instability and that the corrections provided by the first-reflection are necessary for obtaining some crucial dynamical features. As opposed to a sharp boundary between exponential growth and neutral eigenvalues under the Stokeslet approximation, the first-reflection correction leads to exponential growth for all initial perturbations, but far more rapid algebraic growth than exponential growth at large lattice spacing $d$. For discs with aspect ratio 0.125, corresponding to the experimental value, the instability growth rate is found to decrease with increasing lattice spacing $d$, approximately as $d^{-4.5}$, which is faster than the $d^{-2}$ for spheres (Crowley, 1971). Abstract: Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have emerged as powerful tools for learning representations of graph-structured data. In addition to real-valued GNNs, quaternion GNNs also perform well on tasks on graph-structured data. With the aim of reducing the energy footprint, we reduce the model size while maintaining accuracy comparable to that of the original-sized GNNs. This paper introduces Quaternion Message Passing Neural Networks (QMPNNs), a framework that leverages quaternion space to compute node representations. Our approach offers a generalizable method for incorporating quaternion representations into GNN architectures at one-fourth of the original parameter count. Furthermore, we present a novel perspective on Graph Lottery Tickets, redefining their applicability within the context of GNNs and QMPNNs. We specifically aim to find the initialization lottery from the subnetwork of the GNNs that can achieve comparable performance to the original GNN upon training. Thereby reducing the trainable model parameters even further. 42. A Planning Framework for Adaptive Labeling

Abstract: Ground truth labels/outcomes are critical for advancing scientific and engineering applications, e.g., evaluating the treatment effect of an intervention or performance of a predictive model. Since randomly sampling inputs for labeling can be prohibitively expensive, we introduce an adaptive labeling framework where measurement effort can be reallocated in batches. We formulate this problem as a Markov decision process where posterior beliefs evolve over time as batches of labels are collected (state transition), and batches (actions) are chosen to minimize uncertainty at the end of data collection. We design a computational framework that is agnostic to different uncertainty quantification approaches including those based on deep learning, and allows a diverse array of policy gradient approaches by relying on continuous policy parameterizations. On real and synthetic datasets, we demonstrate even a one-step lookahead policy can substantially outperform common adaptive labeling heuristics, highlighting the virtue of planning. On the methodological side, we note that standard REINFORCE-style policy gradient estimators can suffer high variance since they rely only on zeroth order information. We propose a direct backpropagation-based approach, Smoothed-Autodiff, based on a carefully smoothed version of the original non-differentiable MDP. 43. Energy-Efficient Autonomous Aerial Navigation with Dynamic Vision Sensors: A Physics-Guided Neuromorphic Approach

Abstract: Vision-based object tracking is a critical component for achieving autonomous aerial navigation, particularly for obstacle avoidance. Neuromorphic Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) or event cameras, inspired by biological vision, offer a promising alternative to conventional frame-based cameras. These cameras can detect changes in intensity asynchronously, even in challenging lighting conditions, with a high dynamic range and resistance to motion blur. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are increasingly used to process these event-based signals efficiently and asynchronously. Meanwhile, physics-based artificial intelligence (AI) provides a means to incorporate system-level knowledge into neural networks via physical modeling. This enhances robustness, energy efficiency, and provides symbolic explainability. In this work, we present a neuromorphic navigation framework for autonomous drone navigation. The focus is on detecting and navigating through moving gates while avoiding collisions. We use event cameras for detecting moving objects through a shallow SNN architecture in an unsupervised manner. This is combined with a lightweight energy-aware physics-guided neural network (PgNN) trained with depth inputs to predict optimal flight times, generating near-minimum energy paths. The system is implemented in the Gazebo simulator and integrates a sensor-fused vision-to-planning neuro-symbolic framework built with the Robot Operating System (ROS) middleware. This work highlights the future potential of integrating event-based vision with physics-guided planning for energy-efficient autonomous navigation, particularly for low-latency decision-making.

44. Dual Defense: Enhancing Privacy and Mitigating Poisoning Attacks in Federated Learning

Abstract: Federated learning (FL) is inherently susceptible to privacy breaches and poisoning attacks. To tackle these challenges, researchers have separately devised secure aggregation mechanisms to protect data privacy and robust aggregation methods that withstand poisoning attacks. However, simultaneously addressing both concerns is challenging; secure aggregation facilitates poisoning attacks as most anomaly detection techniques require access to unencrypted local model updates, which are obscured by secure aggregation. Few recent efforts to simultaneously tackle both challenges offen depend on impractical assumption of non-colluding two-server setups that disrupt FL's topology, or three-party computation which introduces scalability issues, complicating deployment and application. To overcome this dilemma, this paper introduce a Dual Defense Federated learning (DDFed) framework. DDFed simultaneously boosts privacy protection and mitigates poisoning attacks, without introducing new participant roles or disrupting the existing FL topology. DDFed initially leverages cutting-edge fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) to securely aggregate model updates, without the impractical requirement for non-colluding two-server setups and ensures strong privacy protection. Additionally, we proposes a unique two-phase anomaly detection mechanism for encrypted model updates, featuring secure similarity computation and feedback-driven collaborative selection, with additional measures to prevent potential privacy breaches from Byzantine clients incorporated into the detection process. We conducted extensive experiments on various model poisoning attacks and FL scenarios, including both cross-device and cross-silo FL. 45. Resolving shortwave and longwave irradiation distributions across the human body in outdoor built environments

Abstract: Outdoor built environments can be designed to enhance thermal comfort, yet the relationship between the two is often assessed in whole-body terms, overlooking the asymmetric nature of thermal interactions between the human body and its surroundings. Moreover, the radiative component of heat exchange-dominant in hot and dry climates-is typically lumped into a single artificial metric, the mean radiant temperature, rather than being resolved into its shortwave and longwave spectral components. The shortwave irradiation distribution on the human body is often highly anisotropic, causing localized thermal discomfort in outdoor environments. However, no existing methods effectively quantify shortwave and longwave irradiation distributions on the human body. To address this gap, we developed two methods to quantify these processes. The first approach uses an outdoor thermal manikin with a white-coated side, enabling the separation of spectral components by subtracting measurements from symmetrically corresponding surface zones of tan color. The second hybrid approach converts radiometer measurements in six directions into boundary conditions for computational thermal manikin simulations. We evaluated irradiation distributions for various body parts using both methods during outdoor measurements across sunny, partially shaded, and fully shaded sites under warm to extremely hot conditions. In most cases, the two methods produced closely aligned results, with divergences highlighting their respective strengths and limitations. Additionally, we used the manikin to quantify irradiation attenuation provided by five long-sleeve shirts with colors ranging from white to black. Abstract: The first measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry of the decay rate ($A_{CP}$) and the $CP$ average ($\Sigma A_{\text{FB}}$) and $CP$ asymmetry ($\Delta A_{\text{FB}}$) of the forward-backward asymmetry in the muon system of $\mathit{\Lambda}^+_c\to p\mu^+\mu^-$ decays is reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\text{ TeV}$, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4$\text{ fb}^{-1}$. The asymmetries are measured in two regions of dimuon mass near the $\phi$-meson mass peak. The dimuon-mass integrated results are \begin{align*} A_{CP} &= (-1.1 \pm 4.0 \pm 0.5)\%,\\ \Sigma A_{\text{FB}} &= (\phantom{-}3.9 \pm 4.0 \pm 0.6)\%,\\ \Delta A_{\text{FB}} &= (\phantom{-}3.1 \pm 4.0 \pm 0.4)\%, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. 47. Scaling laws in wearable human activity recognition

Abstract: Many deep architectures and self-supervised pre-training techniques have been proposed for human activity recognition (HAR) from wearable multimodal sensors. Scaling laws have the potential to help move towards more principled design by linking model capacity with pre-training data volume. Yet, scaling laws have not been established for HAR to the same extent as in language and vision. By conducting an exhaustive grid search on both amount of pre-training data and Transformer architectures, we establish the first known scaling laws for HAR. We show that pre-training loss scales with a power law relationship to amount of data and parameter count and that increasing the number of users in a dataset results in a steeper improvement in performance than increasing data per user, indicating that diversity of pre-training data is important, which contrasts to some previously reported findings in self-supervised HAR. We show that these scaling laws translate to downstream performance improvements on three HAR benchmark datasets of postures, modes of locomotion and activities of daily living: UCI HAR and WISDM Phone and WISDM Watch. Finally, we suggest some previously published works should be revisited in light of these scaling laws with more adequate model capacities.

48. Nano-size fragmentation of Tantalum in Copper composite using additive manufacturing

Abstract: The biggest challenge in manufacturing an immiscible system is phase segregation and non-uniformity inside the composite matrix. Additive manufacturing has the potential to overcome these difficulties due to the high cooling rate achieved during the process. Here we have developed immiscible Copper-based composites reinforced with Tantalum, which were fabricated using the powder bed fusion melting (PBF-M) technique. The distinct advantage of utilizing Tantalum in this process resides in its high melting point, allowing it to remain in particle form within the composite and contribute to its mechanical and surface/wear properties. The PBF-M results in the in situ fragmentation of micron-size Tantalum particles into nanoparticle form through a surface roughening process during laser interaction, enhancing its mechanical and wear properties. The microstructural evolution of Cu-Ta composites is explained through multiscale numerical modeling. The enhanced yield strength and the dynamics of the Ta particles were corroborated by molecular dynamics simulations. The maximum yield strength is exhibited by Cu-5wt%Ta of 80 MPa. Addition of Ta also have significant improvement in wear properties of composites. The current results can be exploited to develop complex shape, high energy efficient copper-based composites.

49. The physics of oscillating surfaces and sounds

Abstract: The longitudinal oscillations of air columns composed of contractions and rarefaction make up sound. Sound amplification is widely used in medical, electronic and communication fields. A simplistic technique for producing and amplifying can be rewarding. In this study, we investigate a simplistic DIY speaker configuration that can be utilized for sound creation and modulation by implementing response of magnets and a solenoid to an oscillating input signal. We use steady state solution of forced simple harmonic oscillator with damping parameters to analyze our design and show its characteristic frequencies. We present an analytical way of obtaining optimal parameters of the setup to theoretically obtain experimental characteristic frequencies and provide an in-depth investigation of the setup., Comment: 22 pages

50. The Cost of Shuffling in Private Gradient Based Optimization

Abstract: We consider the problem of differentially private (DP) convex empirical risk minimization (ERM). While the standard DP-SGD algorithm is theoretically well-established, practical implementations often rely on shuffled gradient methods that traverse the training data sequentially rather than sampling with replacement in each iteration. Despite their widespread use, the theoretical privacy-accuracy trade-offs of private shuffled gradient methods (\textit{DP-ShuffleG}) remain poorly understood, leading to a gap between theory and practice. In this work, we leverage privacy amplification by iteration (PABI) and a novel application of Stein's lemma to provide the first empirical excess risk bound of \textit{DP-ShuffleG}. Our result shows that data shuffling results in worse empirical excess risk for \textit{DP-ShuffleG} compared to DP-SGD. To address this limitation, we propose \textit{Interleaved-ShuffleG}, a hybrid approach that integrates public data samples in private optimization. By alternating optimization steps that use private and public samples, \textit{Interleaved-ShuffleG} effectively reduces empirical excess risk. Our analysis introduces a new optimization framework with surrogate objectives, adaptive noise injection, and a dissimilarity metric, which can be of independent interest. Our experiments on diverse datasets and tasks demonstrate the superiority of \textit{Interleaved-ShuffleG} over several baselines., Comment: 54 pages, 6 figures
