Abstract

Information Reconciliation is a critical component of Quantum Key Distribution, ensuring that mismatches between Alice's and Bob's keys are corrected. In this study, we analyze, simulate, optimize, and compare the performance of two prevalent algorithms used for Information Reconciliation: Cascade and LDPC codes in combination with the Blind protocol. We focus on their applicability in practical and industrial settings, operating in realistic and application-close conditions. Abstract

PURPOSE: Left ventricular (LV) fibrosis has a key role in arrhythmogenesis in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Cardiac magnetic resonance identifies LV fibrosis by using late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) technique. LGE assessment and quantification in patients with MVP lacks of standardization protocols. METHODS: 66 MVP patients with normal systolic function and without significant regurgitation were enrolled. Semi-automated gray-scale thresholding techniques using full width at half maximum (FWHM) and 2, 3 and 5 standard deviation (SD) above the remote myocardium were used and compared with the visual assessment, considered as the gold standard. RESULTS: LGE was identified in 41 MVP patients (62%) and quantified. The mean quantity of LGE visually assessed was 2.40 ± 1.07% or 1.40 ± 0.82 g. With FWHM, LGE resulted 3.56 ± 1.23% or 1.99 ± 1.13 g. Using thresholding, the mean LGE quantity was 9.2 ± 3.1% or 4.82 ± 2.28 g for 2-SD, 5.72 ± 1.75% or 3.06 ± 1.47 g for 3-SD and 2.36 ± 0.99% or 1.29 ± 0.79 g for 5-SD. The 5-SD measurement in percentage demonstrated a good correlation with LGE quantification visually assessed (2.40 ± 1.07 vs. 2.363 ± 0.9909, p = 0.543). When compared with the gold standard, the 5-SD threshold quantification, both in percentage and in grams, revealed the least intra-observer (respectively, ICC: 0.976 and 0.966) and inter-observer variability (respectively ICC: 0.948 and 0.935). CONCLUSION: The 5-SD gray-scale threshold technique in percentage revealed the best correlation with the visual assessment and an optimal reproducibility in MVP patient.

Abstract

Nowadays Quantum Key Distribution represents the most mature quantum technology, and multiple countries as well as private institutions are building their quantum network. However, QKD devices are still far from representing a product within everyone's reach. Indeed, limitations in terms of compatibility with existing telecom infrastructure and limited performances in terms of secret key rate, using non-cryogenic detection systems, are still critical. In this work, we implemented a quantum key distribution link between Sicily (Italy) and Malta utilizing two different Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) detectors. The performances of a standard commercial SPAD have been compared with the results achieved with a new prototype of fast-gated System in a Package (SiP) SPAD; the SiP detector has shown to be able to accomplish a fourteen times higher key rate compared with the commercial device over the channel showing 20 dB of losses.

Abstract

Payment platforms have significantly evolved in recent years to keep pace with the proliferation of online and cashless payments. These platforms are increasingly aligned with online social networks, allowing users to interact with each other and transfer small amounts of money in a Peer-to-Peer fashion. This poses new challenges for analysing payment data, as traditional methods are only user-centric or business-centric and neglect the network users build during the interaction. This paper proposes a first methodology for measuring user value in modern payment platforms. We combine quantitative user-centric metrics with an analysis of the graph created by users' activities and its topological features inspired by the evolution of opinions in social networks. We showcase our approach using a dataset from a large operational payment platform and show how it can support business decisions and marketing campaign design, e.g., by targeting specific users., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

Dopamine dyshomeostasis has been acknowledged among the determinants of nigrostriatal neuron degeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD). Several studies in experimental models and postmortem PD patients underlined increasing levels of the dopamine metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde (DOPAL), which is highly reactive towards proteins. DOPAL has been shown to covalently modify the presynaptic protein αSynuclein (αSyn), whose misfolding and aggregation represent a major trait of PD pathology, triggering αSyn oligomerization in dopaminergic neurons. Here, we demonstrated that DOPAL elicits αSyn accumulation and hampers αSyn clearance in primary neurons. DOPAL-induced αSyn buildup lessens neuronal resilience, compromises synaptic integrity, and overwhelms protein quality control pathways in neurites. The progressive decline of neuronal homeostasis further leads to dopaminergic neuron loss and motor impairment, as showed in in vivo models. Finally, we developed a specific antibody which detected increased DOPAL-modified αSyn in human striatal tissues from idiopathic PD patients, corroborating the translational relevance of αSyn-DOPAL interplay in PD neurodegeneration.

Abstract

During recent decades, model organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster have made it possible to study the effects of different environmental oxygen conditions on lifespan and oxidative stress. However, many studies have often yielded controversial results usually assigned to variations in Drosophila genetic background and differences in study design. In this study, we compared longevity and ROS levels in young, unmated males of three laboratory wild-type lines (Canton-S, Oregon-R and Berlin-K) and one mutant line (Sod1n1) as a positive control of redox imbalance, under both normoxic and hypoxic (2% oxygen for 24 h) conditions. Lifespan was used to detect the effects of hypoxic treatment and differences were analysed by means of Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to measure ROS levels and analysis of variance was used to estimate the effects of hypoxic treatment and to assess ROS differences between strains. We observed that the genetic background is a relevant factor involved in D. melanogaster longevity and ROS levels. Indeed, as expected, in normoxia Sod1n1 are the shortest-lived, while the wild-type strains, despite a longer lifespan, show some differences, with the Canton-S line displaying the lowest mortality rate. After hypoxic stress these variances are amplified, with Berlin-K flies showing the highest mortality rate and most evident reduction of lifespan. Moreover, our analysis highlighted differential effects of hypoxia on redox balance/unbalance. Canton-S flies had the lowest increase of ROS level compared to all the other strains, confirming it to be the less sensitive to hypoxic stress. Sod1n1 flies displayed the highest ROS levels in normoxia and after hypoxia. These results should be used to further standardize future Drosophila research models designed to investigate genes and pathways that may be involved in lifespan and/or ROS, as well as comparative studies on specific mutant strains.

This paper introduces a framework for analyzing a general class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems with given state-, control-, and disturbance constraints. In particular, we propose a set-theoretic generalization of the concept of dissipativity of systems that are affected by external disturbances. Abstract

Globalization is a powerful force with far reaching impacts on education and education policy. The growth of large scale international surveys of student achievement and the increasing role played by intergovernmental agencies in education means that the influence that globalization exerts on education is likely to increase even further in the future. This open access book provides a significant and timely investigation into the impacts that globalization has exerted on science curricula in a diverse range of countries using extensive data sets collected by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) between 1995 and 2015. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, this book considers the extent to which there have been changes to the intended and implemented science curricula in different countries over the last 20 years. Consideration is then given as to whether science curricula are becoming increasingly similar across countries over time. Finally the issue of whether the basis of an international core curriculum can be identified is addressed. Readers will gain a unique insight into the extent to which globalization and large scale international assessments have influenced science curricula in the last 20 years within both the primary and secondary phases. Abstract

Complex natural and technological systems can be considered, on a coarse-grained level, as assemblies of elementary components: for example, genomes as sets of genes, or texts as sets of words. On one hand, the joint occurrence of components emerges from architectural and specific constraints in such systems. On the other hand, general regularities may unify different systems, such as the broadly studied Zipf and Heaps laws, respectively concerning the distribution of component frequencies and their number as a function of system size. Dependency structures (i.e., directed networks encoding the dependency relations between the components in a system) were proposed recently as a possible organizing principles underlying some of the regularities observed. However, the consequences of this assumption were explored only in binary component systems, where solely the presence or absence of components is considered, and multiple copies of the same component are not allowed. Here, we consider a simple model that generates, from a given ensemble of dependency structures, a statistical ensemble of sets of components, allowing for components to appear with any multiplicity. Our model is a minimal extension that is memoryless, and therefore accessible to analytical calculations. A mean-field analytical approach (analogous to the "Zipfian ensemble" in the linguistics literature) captures the relevant laws describing the component statistics as we show by comparison with numerical computations. In particular, we recover a power-law Zipf rank plot, with a set of core components, and a Heaps law displaying three consecutive regimes (linear, sub-linear and saturating) that we characterize quantitatively.

Abstract

Among several quantitative invariants found in evolutionary genomics, one of the most striking is the scaling of the overall abundance of proteins, or protein domains, sharing a specific functional annotation across genomes of given size. The size of these functional categories change, on average, as power-laws in the total number of protein-coding genes. Here, we show that such regularities are not restricted to the overall behavior of high-level functional categories, but also exist systematically at the level of single evolutionary families of protein domains. Specifically, the number of proteins within each family follows family-specific scaling laws with genome size. Functionally similar sets of families tend to follow similar scaling laws, but this is not always the case. To understand this systematically, we provide a comprehensive classification of families based on their scaling properties. Additionally, we develop a quantitative score for the heterogeneity of the scaling of families belonging to a given category or predefined group. Under the common reasonable assumption that selection is driven solely or mainly by biological function, these findings point to fine-tuned and interdependent functional roles of specific protein domains, beyond our current functional annotations. Abstract

Oxidative stress and fibrosis are important stress responses that characterize bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a disease for which only a therapy but not a cure has been developed. In this work, we investigated the effects of mesenchymal stromal cells-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) on lung and brain compartment in an animal model of hyperoxia-induced BPD. Rat pups were intratracheally injected with MSC-EVs produced by human umbilical cord-derived MSC, following the Good Manufacturing Practice-grade (GMP-grade). After evaluating biodistribution of labelled MSC-EVs in rat pups left in normoxia and hyperoxia, oxidative stress and fibrosis investigation were performed. Oxidative stress protection by MSC-EVs treatment was proved both in lung and in brain. The lung epithelial compartment ameliorated glycosaminoglycan and surfactant protein expression in MSC-EVs-injected rat pups compared to untreated animals. Pups under hyperoxia exhibited a fibrotic phenotype in lungs shown by increased collagen deposition and also expression of profibrotic genes. Both parameters were reduced by treatment with MSC-EVs. We established an in vitro model of fibrosis and another of oxidative stress, and we proved that MSC-EVs suppressed the induction of αSMA, influencing collagen deposition and protecting from the oxidative stress. In conclusion, intratracheal administration of clinical-grade MSC-EVs protect from oxidative stress, improves pulmonary epithelial function, and counteracts the development of fibrosis. In the future, MSC-EVs could represent a new cure to prevent the development of BPD.Graphical AbstractClinical grade MSC-EVs were intratracheally injected in a rat model of broncopulmonary dysplasia. Abstract

Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) is effective in suppressing viral replication, HIV-1 persists in reservoirs and rebounds after ART has been stopped. However, a very few people (eg, elite and post-treatment controllers) are able to maintain viral loads below detection limits without ART, constituting a realistic model for long-term HIV remission. Here, we describe the HIV control mechanisms of an individual who showed exceptional post-treatment control for longer than 15 years.
