Abstract: The multiplicities of positive and negative pions, kaons and unidentified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering are measured in bins of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$, the relative virtual-photon energy $y$ and the fraction of the virtual-photon energy transferred to the final-state hadron $z$. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam of both electric charges and a liquid hydrogen target. These measurements cover the kinematic domain with photon virtuality $Q^2 > 1$ (GeV/$c)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.1 < y < 0.7$ and $0.2 < z < 0.85$, in accordance with the kinematic domain used in earlier published COMPASS multiplicity measurements with an isoscalar target. The calculation of radiative corrections was improved by using the Monte Carlo generator DJANGOH, which results in up to 12\% larger corrections in the low-$x$ region., Comment: 19 pages, 29 figures

2. Transformer Guided Coevolution: Improved Team Formation in Multiagent Adversarial Games

Abstract: We consider the problem of team formation within multiagent adversarial games. We propose BERTeam, a novel algorithm that uses a transformer-based deep neural network with Masked Language Model training to select the best team of players from a trained population. We integrate this with coevolutionary deep reinforcement learning, which trains a diverse set of individual players to choose teams from. We test our algorithm in the multiagent adversarial game Marine Capture-The-Flag, and we find that BERTeam learns non-trivial team compositions that perform well against unseen opponents. For this game, we find that BERTeam outperforms MCAA, an algorithm that similarly optimizes team formation.

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction has emerged as a prominent area of research, attracting significant attention from academia and industry alike. Among the various applications of 3D reconstruction, facial reconstruction poses some of the most formidable challenges. Additionally, each individuals facial structure is unique, requiring algorithms to be robust enough to handle this variability while maintaining fidelity to the original features. This article presents a comprehensive dataset of 3D meshes featuring a diverse range of facial structures and corresponding facial landmarks. The dataset comprises 188 3D facial meshes, including 73 from female candidates and 114 from male candidates. It encompasses a broad representation of ethnic backgrounds, with contributions from 45 different ethnicities, ensuring a rich diversity in facial characteristics. Each facial mesh is accompanied by key points that accurately annotate the relevant features, facilitating precise analysis and manipulation. This dataset is particularly valuable for applications such as facial re targeting, the study of facial structure components, and real-time person representation in video streams. 5. Are Large Language Models In-Context Personalized Summarizers? Get an iCOPERNICUS Test Done!

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have succeeded considerably in In-Context-Learning (ICL) based summarization. However, saliency is subject to the users' specific preference histories. Hence, we need reliable In-Context Personalization Learning (ICPL) capabilities within such LLMs. For any arbitrary LLM to exhibit ICPL, it needs to have the ability to discern contrast in user profiles. A recent study proposed a measure for degree-of-personalization called EGISES for the first time. EGISES measures a model's responsiveness to user profile differences. However, it cannot test if a model utilizes all three types of cues provided in ICPL prompts: (i) example summaries, (ii) user's reading histories, and (iii) contrast in user profiles. To address this, we propose the iCOPERNICUS framework, a novel In-COntext PERsonalization learNIng sCrUtiny of Summarization capability in LLMs that uses EGISES as a comparative measure. As a case-study, we evaluate 17 state-of-the-art LLMs based on their reported ICL performances and observe that 15 models' ICPL degrades (min: 1.6%; max: 3.6%) when probed with richer prompts, thereby showing lack of true ICPL.

6. A search for the ultra high energy neutrinos with the low threshold phased array trigger system of the Askaryan Radio Array

Abstract: The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) is an in-ice ultra high energy (UHE, $>10$ PeV) neutrino experiment at the South Pole that aims to detect UHE neutrino-induced radio emission in ice. ARA consists of five independent stations each consisting of a cubical lattice of in-ice antenna clusters with a side length of $\sim$10 m buried at $\sim$200 m below the ice surface. The fifth station of ARA (A5) is special as this station has an additional central string, the phased array (PA), which provides an interferometric trigger that enables ARA to trigger on weak signals that are otherwise buried in noise. Leveraging the low threshold phased array trigger, ARA was the first radio neutrino experiment to demonstrate significant improvement in sensitivity to weak signals. In this contribution, we present initial results from a neutrino search combining information from both the traditional station antennas and the phased array antennas of the A5 station. We show the improved vertex reconstruction achieved with this approach, and leveraging this improvement, we expect to enhance the analysis efficiency beyond what has been achieved previously by ARA. This analysis is the paradigmatic representation of future neutrino searches with the next generation of in-ice neutrino experiments.

7. Nature of the activity-mediated unjamming transition in confluent cell monolayers

Abstract: Activity-mediated unjamming transition in confluent systems is crucial for embryogenesis, wound healing, cancer metastasis, etc. During these processes, the cells progressively change their junction properties, characterized by an interaction parameter $p_0$, and become motile. How does activity affect this unjamming transition? Using molecular dynamics simulations of the active Vertex model and analytical mode-coupling theory (MCT), we show that the nature of the transition in the presence of activity remains similar to that in equilibrium. The agreement of the simulation results with the MCT predictions demonstrates that the structure-dynamics feedback mechanism controls the relaxation dynamics. In addition, we present the first computation of a dynamic length scale, $\xi_d$, and show that the growing relaxation time accompanies an increasing $\xi_d$. Furthermore, unlike particulate glasses, the static length is proportional to $\xi_d$. Our results highlight the unique nature of the glassy dynamics in confluent systems and rationalize the existing experimental data.

8. A collinear shower algorithm for NSL non-singlet fragmentation

Abstract: We formulate a collinear partonic shower algorithm that achieves next-to-single-logarithmic (NSL, $\alpha_s^n L^{n-1}$) accuracy for collinear-sensitive non-singlet fragmentation observables. This entails the development of an algorithm for nesting triple-collinear splitting functions. It also involves the inclusion of the one-loop double-collinear corrections, through a $z$-dependent NLO-accurate effective $1\to 2$ branching probability, using a formula that can be applied more generally also to future full showers with $1\to3$ splitting kernels. The specific NLO branching probability is calculated in two ways, one based on slicing, the other using a subtraction approach based on recent analytical calculations. We close with demonstrations of the shower's accuracy for non-singlet partonic fragmentation functions and the energy spectrum of small-$R$ quark jets. 9. Universal tester for multiple independence testing and classical-quantum arbitrarily varying multiple access channel

Abstract: We study two kinds of different problems. One is the multiple independence testing, which can be considered as a kind of generalization of quantum Stein's lemma. We test whether the quantum system is correlated to the classical system or is independent of it. Here, the null hypothesis is composed of states having the quantum system is correlated to the classical system in an arbitrarily varying form. The second problem is the problem of reliable communication over classical-quantum arbitrarily varying multiple access channels (CQ-AVMAC) and establishing its capacity region by giving multiple achievability techniques. We prove that each of these techniques is optimal by proving a converse. Further, for both these techniques, the decoder designed is a \emph{universal} decoder and can achieve any rate pair in the capacity region without time sharing and also these decoders do not depend on the channel and therefore they are universal. Our result covers the case when the channel parameter is continuous, which has not been studied even in the classical case. Further, both these techniques can be easily generalized to the case when there are $T (T>2)$ senders. The design of each of these decoders is based on the study of multiple independence testing. Then, we study a class of pseudo-differential operators known as time-frequency localization operators on $\mathbb Z^n$, which depend on a symbol $\varsigma$ and two windows functions $g_1$ and $g_2$. 13. Segregation, Finite Time Elastic Singularities and Coarsening in Renewable Active Matter

Abstract: Material renewability in active living systems, such as in cells and tissues, can drive the large-scale patterning of forces, with distinctive phenotypic consequences. This is especially significant in the cell cytoskeleton, where multiple species of myosin bound to actin, apply contractile stresses and undergo continual turnover, that result in patterned force channeling. Here we study the dynamical patterning of stresses that emerge in a hydrodynamic model of a renewable active actomyosin elastomer comprising two myosin species. We find that a uniform active contractile elastomer spontaneously segregates into spinodal stress patterns, followed by a finite-time collapse into tension carrying singular structures that display self-similar scaling and caustics. These singular structures move and merge, and gradually result in a slow coarsening dynamics in one dimension. In addition, the nonreciprocal nature of the underlying dynamics gives rise to exceptional points that are associated with a variety of travelling states -- from peristalsis to swap and trains of regular and singular stress patterns, that may coexist with each other. Both the novel segregation and excitability are consequences of time reversal symmetry breaking of the underlying active dynamics. 14. A Comparative Study of Hyperparameter Tuning Methods

Abstract: The study emphasizes the challenge of finding the optimal trade-off between bias and variance, especially as hyperparameter optimization increases in complexity. Through empirical analysis, three hyperparameter tuning algorithms Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE), Genetic Search, and Random Search are evaluated across regression and classification tasks. The results show that nonlinear models, with properly tuned hyperparameters, significantly outperform linear models. Interestingly, Random Search excelled in regression tasks, while TPE was more effective for classification tasks. This suggests that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, as different algorithms perform better depending on the task and model type. Abstract: Super-resolution (SR) models in cosmological simulations use deep learning (DL) to rapidly supplement low-resolution (LR) runs with statistically correct, fine details. The SR technique preserves large-scale structures by conditioning on a low-resolution (LR) version of the simulation. On smaller scales, the generative deep learning (DL) process is stochastic, resulting in numerous possible SR realizations, each with unique small-scale structures. Validation of SR then relies on making sure that a specific statistic of interest is accurately reproduced by comparing SR and high resolution (HR) runs. In this study, we develop an emulator designed to reproduce the individual small-scale structures of an HR simulation as closely as possible. We process an SR realization alongside a specific High-Resolution Initial Condition (HRIC), transforming the SR output to emulate the results of a full simulation with that HRIC. By comparing visualizations, individual halo measures and cross-correlating Fourier modes we show that the emulated SR runs closely align with the corresponding HR simulation, even on length scales an order of magnitude smaller than the LR run. Additionally, small halos are trained to match the HR simulation, and the subhalo mass function is more accurately reproduced. These results show the promise of this method for generating numerous fast and accurate simulations and mock observations for large galaxy surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

19. Coherent control of nonreciprocal optical properties of the defect modes in 1D defective photonic crystals with atomic doping

Abstract: We investigate the spectral properties of photonic crystals, lacking parity-time (PT) symmetry, using scattering matrix formalism. We show using the symmetry properties of matrices that a defective photonic crystal, doped with three-level atoms, breaks PT symmetry. For the two defect modes lying in the bandgap region, both the reflection and the absorption become nonreciprocal, while the transmission remains reciprocal. We show that the relevant energy spectra do not exhibit exceptional points, thereby invalidating its necessity to achieve nonreciprocity in reflection and absorption. We further demonstrate how this nonreciprocity can be coherently controlled using the driving field and dissipation rates of the atoms.

20. Fooling SHAP with Output Shuffling Attacks

Abstract: Explainable AI~(XAI) methods such as SHAP can help discover feature attributions in black-box models. If the method reveals a significant attribution from a ``protected feature'' (e.g., gender, race) on the model output, the model is considered unfair. However, adversarial attacks can subvert the detection of XAI methods. Previous approaches to constructing such an adversarial model require access to underlying data distribution, which may not be possible in many practical scenarios. We relax this constraint and propose a novel family of attacks, called shuffling attacks, that are data-agnostic. The proposed attack strategies can adapt any trained machine learning model to fool Shapley value-based explanations. We prove that Shapley values cannot detect shuffling attacks. However, algorithms that estimate Shapley values, such as linear SHAP and SHAP, can detect these attacks with varying degrees of effectiveness. We demonstrate the efficacy of the attack strategies by comparing the performance of linear SHAP and SHAP using real-world datasets.

21. Quantum synchronization between two spin chains using pseudo-bosonic equivalence

Abstract: Quantum synchronization among many spins is an intriguing domain of research. In this paper, we explore the quantum synchronization of two finite chains of spin-1/2 particles, via a nonlinear interaction mediated by a a central intermediary spin chain. We introduce a novel approach using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation to treat the spin chains as pseudo-bosonic systems and thereby applying the synchronization criteria for harmonic oscillators. Our theoretical framework and numerical simulations reveal that under optimal conditions, the spin chains can achieve both classical and perfect quantum synchronization. We show that quantum synchronization is robust against variations in the number of spins and inter-spin coupling, though may be affected by thermal noise. This work advances the understanding of synchronization in multi-spin systems and introduces a generalized synchronization measure for both bosons and fermions.

26. Biometrics of complete human pregnancy recorded by wearable devices.

Abstract: In the United States, normal-risk pregnancies are monitored with the recommended average of 14 prenatal visits. Check-ins every few weeks are the standard of care. This low time resolution and reliance on subjective feedback instead of direct physiological measurement, could be augmented by remote monitoring. To date, continuous physiological measurements have not been characterized across all of pregnancy, so there is little basis of comparison to support the development of the specific monitoring capabilities. Wearables have been shown to enable the detection and prediction of acute illness, often faster than subjective symptom reporting. Wearables have also been used for years to monitor chronic conditions, such as continuous glucose monitors. Here we perform a retrospective analysis on multimodal wearable device data (Oura Ring) generated across pregnancy within 120 individuals. These data reveal clear trajectories of pregnancy from cycling to conception through postpartum recovery. We assessed individuals in whom pregnancy did not progress past the first trimester, and found associated deviations, corroborating that continuous monitoring adds new information that could support decision-making even in the early stages of pregnancy. By contrast, we did not find significant deviations between full-term pregnancies of people younger than 35 and of people with advanced maternal age, suggesting that analysis of continuous data within individuals can augment risk assessment beyond standard population comparisons. Our findings demonstrate that low-cost, high-resolution monitoring at all stages of pregnancy in real-world settings is feasible and that many studies into specific demographics, risks, etc., could be carried out using this newer technology.

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Machine learning models are increasingly used in areas such as loan approvals and hiring, yet they often function as black boxes, obscuring their decision-making processes. Transparency is crucial, and individuals need explanations to understand decisions, especially for the ones not desired by the user. Ethical and legal considerations require informing individuals of changes in input attribute values (features) that could lead to a desired outcome for the user. Our work aims to generate counterfactual explanations by considering causal dependencies between features. We present the CoGS (Counterfactual Generation with s(CASP)) framework that utilizes the goal-directed Answer Set Programming system s(CASP) to generate counterfactuals from rule-based machine learning models, specifically the FOLD-SE algorithm. CoGS computes realistic and causally consistent changes to attribute values taking causal dependencies between them into account. It finds a path from an undesired outcome to a desired one using counterfactuals. We present details of the CoGS framework along with its evaluation.

Abstract: We obtain a strong bound on the second moment of the $GL_3$ standard $L$-function on the critical line. The method builds on the recent work of Aggarwal, Leung, and Munshi which treated shorter intervals. We deduce some corollaries including an improvement on the error term in the Rankin-Selberg problem, and on certain subconvexity bounds for $GL_3 \times GL_2$ and $GL_3$ $L$-functions. As a byproduct of the method of proof, we also obtain an estimate for an average of shifted convolution sums of $GL_3$ Fourier coefficients.

34. Quasi-probability distribution of work in a measurement-based quantum Otto engine

Abstract: We study the work statistics of a measurement-based quantum Otto engine, where quantum non-selective measurements are used to fuel the engine, in a coupled spin working system (WS). The WS exhibits quantum coherence in the energy eigenbasis at the beginning of a unitary work extraction stage in presence of inter-spin anisotropic interaction. We demonstrate that the probability of certain values of stochastic work can be negative, rendering itself akin to the quasi-probability distribution found in phase space. This can be attributed to the interference terms facilitated by quantum coherence. Additionally, we establish that coherence can improve the average work in finite time. Subsequently, we compare the work distribution with a standard QOE operating between two heat baths. We find that, because of the absence of quantum coherence, the probability of stochastic work cannot be negative in a standard QOE.

Abstract: This work reports an acoustic solidly mounted resonator (SMR) at 18.64 GHz, among the highest operating frequencies reported. The device is built in scandium aluminum nitride (ScAlN) on top of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) Bragg reflectors on silicon (Si) wafer. The stack is analyzed with X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The resonator shows a coupling coefficient (k2) of 2.0%, high series quality factor (Qs) of 156, shunt quality factor (Qp) of 142, and maximum Bode quality factor (Qmax) of 210. The third-order harmonics at 59.64 GHz is also observed with k2 around 0.6% and Q around 40. Abstract: Leveraging Large Language Models' remarkable proficiency in text-based tasks, recent works on Multi-modal LLMs (MLLMs) extend them to other modalities like vision and audio. However, the progress in these directions has been mostly focused on tasks that only require a coarse-grained understanding of the audio-visual semantics. We present Meerkat, an audio-visual LLM equipped with a fine-grained understanding of image and audio both spatially and temporally. With a new modality alignment module based on optimal transport and a cross-attention module that enforces audio-visual consistency, Meerkat can tackle challenging tasks such as audio referred image grounding, image guided audio temporal localization, and audio-visual fact-checking. Moreover, we carefully curate a large dataset AVFIT that comprises 3M instruction tuning samples collected from open-source datasets, and introduce MeerkatBench that unifies five challenging audio-visual tasks. 37. PerSEval: Assessing Personalization in Text Summarizers

Abstract: Personalized summarization models cater to individuals' subjective understanding of saliency, as represented by their reading history and current topics of attention. Existing personalized text summarizers are primarily evaluated based on accuracy measures such as BLEU, ROUGE, and METEOR. However, a recent study argued that accuracy measures are inadequate for evaluating the degree of personalization of these models and proposed EGISES, the first metric to evaluate personalized text summaries. It was suggested that accuracy is a separate aspect and should be evaluated standalone. In this paper, we challenge the necessity of an accuracy leaderboard, suggesting that relying on accuracy-based aggregated results might lead to misleading conclusions. To support this, we delve deeper into EGISES, demonstrating both theoretically and empirically that it measures the degree of responsiveness, a necessary but not sufficient condition for degree-of-personalization. We subsequently propose PerSEval, a novel measure that satisfies the required sufficiency condition. Based on the benchmarking of ten SOTA summarization models on the PENS dataset, we empirically establish that -- (i) PerSEval is reliable w.r.t human-judgment correlation (Pearson's r = 0.73; Spearman's $\rho$ = 0.62; Kendall's $\tau$ = 0.42), (ii) PerSEval has high rank-stability, (iii) PerSEval as a rank-measure is not entailed by EGISES-based ranking, and (iv) PerSEval can be a standalone rank-measure without the need of any aggregated ranking.

38. Mitigation of fine hydrophobic liquid aerosols by polydispersed uncharged and charged water droplets

Abstract: One of the harmful contaminants in the atmosphere, which negatively affects the well-being of both humans and animals, is the suspended respirable particles. The most difficult aspect of the study is now removing these fine respirable particles from the atmosphere. This study investigates the scavenging phenomenon of fine hydrophobic liquid aerosols (10 nm to 1050 nm) by uncharged and charged droplets in a self-made scaled test rig. In this study, a hollow cone nozzle with a 1 mm orifice diameter uses tap water to disperse liquid into fine droplets. The paraffin oil and Di-Ethyl-Hexyl-Sebacat (DEHS) solution are aerosolized to be scavenged by water droplets. This research employs a high-speed imaging technique and theoretical modeling approach to measure the size distribution and charge acquired by water droplets respectively. 39. Unifying Mixed Gas Adsorption in Molecular Sieve Membranes and MOFs using Machine Learning

Abstract: Recent machine learning models to accurately obtain gas adsorption isotherms focus on polymers or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) separately. The difficulty in creating a unified model that can predict the adsorption trends in both types of adsorbents is challenging, owing to the diversity in their chemical structures. Moreover, models trained only on single gas adsorption data are incapable of predicting adsorption isotherms for binary gas mixtures. In this work, we address these problems using feature vectors comprising only the physical properties of the gas mixtures and adsorbents. Our model is trained on adsorption isotherms of both single and binary mixed gases inside carbon molecular sieving membrane (CMSM), together with data available from CoRE MOF database. The trained models are capable of accurately predicting the adsorption trends in both classes of materials, for both pure and binary components. ML architecture designed for one class of material, is not suitable for predicting the other class, even after proper training, signifying that the model must be trained jointly for proper predictions and transferability. The model is used to predict with good accuracy the CO2 uptake inside CALF-20 framework. Abstract: We present the results of a nation-wide baseline survey, conducted by us, for the status of Astronomy education among secondary school students in India. The survey was administered in 10 different languages to over 2000 students from diverse backgrounds, and it explored multiple facets of their perspectives on astronomy. The topics included students' views on the incorporation of astronomy in curricula, their grasp of fundamental astronomical concepts, access to educational resources, cultural connections to astronomy, and their levels of interest and aspirations in the subject. We find notable deficiencies in students' knowledge of basic astronomical principles, with only a minority demonstrating proficiency in key areas such as celestial sizes, distances, and lunar phases. Furthermore, access to resources such as telescopes and planetariums remain limited across the country. Despite these challenges, a significant majority of students expressed a keen interest in astronomy. We further analyze the data along socioeconomic and gender lines. Particularly striking were the socioeconomic disparities, with students from resource-poor backgrounds often having lower levels of access and proficiency. Some differences were observed between genders, although not very pronounced. 41. Conditional score-based diffusion models for solving inverse problems in mechanics

Abstract: We propose a framework to perform Bayesian inference using conditional score-based diffusion models to solve a class of inverse problems in mechanics involving the inference of a specimen's spatially varying material properties from noisy measurements of its mechanical response to loading. Conditional score-based diffusion models are generative models that learn to approximate the score function of a conditional distribution using samples from the joint distribution. More specifically, the score functions corresponding to multiple realizations of the measurement are approximated using a single neural network, the so-called score network, which is subsequently used to sample the posterior distribution using an appropriate Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme based on Langevin dynamics. Training the score network only requires simulating the forward model. Hence, the proposed approach can accommodate black-box forward models and complex measurement noise. Moreover, once the score network has been trained, it can be re-used to solve the inverse problem for different realizations of the measurements. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach on a suite of high-dimensional inverse problems in mechanics that involve inferring heterogeneous material properties from noisy measurements. Some examples we consider involve synthetic data, while others include data collected from actual elastography experiments. Further, our applications demonstrate that the proposed approach can handle different measurement modalities, complex patterns in the inferred quantities, non-Gaussian and non-additive noise models, and nonlinear black-box forward models. The results show that the proposed framework can solve large-scale physics-based inverse problems efficiently.

Abstract: A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. 43. Charged drop impinging on particles dispersed over a metallic plate: A method of particle cleaning

Abstract: An electric field applied to a droplet impinging on a hydrophobic surface has an extensive variety of applications, including ant-icing, heat transfer enhancement, self-cleaning, droplet manipulation, and electrostatic spraying. The present study demonstrates an effective method of particle removal using a charged droplet. This method employs a pin-plate electrode setup to investigate the dynamics of a charged droplet impact on the surface covered with particles. The particles of different properties such as wettability, electrical conductivity, etc. have been used. Silane-coated glass beads, carbon black, and glass beads are dispersed over the ground copper electrode. The applied potential is also varied from 2 kV to 4 kV. A high-speed imaging is employed to visualize the drop motion, dynamic behavior, and self-cleaning phenomenon. The experimental results indicate that drop generation and impact occur at applied potentials of 2.5, 3, and 3.5 kV, in contrast, at 2 kV, there is no droplet pinch-off. At 4 kV, electric breakdown and bridging of the droplet between the capillary and ground electrode are observed. The drop impact on the silane-coated glass bead leads to their attachment due to the adhesiveness of the particles and the droplet. The silane-coated particles are removed from the droplet surface due to the deformation of the drop and the electric repulsive force. In the case of carbon black and glass beads, the particles are captured by the droplet due to the electrostatic force of attraction. Higher electric potentials lead to an increased spreading diameter of the droplet. The higher electric field enhances the contact area between the droplet and the particles, thereby removing more particles.

44. From Concrete to Abstract in Indian Mathematics

Abstract: Despite the extensive amount of scholarly work done on Indian mathematics in the last 200 years, the conditions under which it originated and evolved is still not clear. Often, one reads the ancient texts with the present concepts and methods in mind. The fact of absence of script over a long stretch of Indian history in ancient times also gets overlooked in such readings. The purpose of this article is to explore the journey of mathematics by examining what the ancient texts tell us about the nature of mathematics in their times. What one finds from the investigation of arithmetic, geometry and algebra is that while it was concrete and context bound, rooted in solving practical problems in ancient times, Indian mathematics transitioned to context free, abstract stage with the advent of algebra supported by writing.

45. ReMI: A Dataset for Reasoning with Multiple Images

Abstract: With the continuous advancement of large language models (LLMs), it is essential to create new benchmarks to effectively evaluate their expanding capabilities and identify areas for improvement. This work focuses on multi-image reasoning, an emerging capability in state-of-the-art LLMs. We introduce ReMI, a dataset designed to assess LLMs' ability to Reason with Multiple Images. This dataset encompasses a diverse range of tasks, spanning various reasoning domains such as math, physics, logic, code, table/chart understanding, and spatial and temporal reasoning. It also covers a broad spectrum of characteristics found in multi-image reasoning scenarios. We have benchmarked several cutting-edge LLMs using ReMI and found a substantial gap between their performance and human-level proficiency. This highlights the challenges in multi-image reasoning and the need for further research. Our analysis also reveals the strengths and weaknesses of different models, shedding light on the types of reasoning that are currently attainable and areas where future models require improvement. 46. Focusing of concentric free-surface waves

Abstract: Gravito-capillary waves at free-surfaces are ubiquitous in several natural and industrial processes involving quiescent liquid pools bounded by cylindrical walls. These waves emanate from the relaxation of initial interface distortions, which often take the form of a cavity (depression) centred on the symmetry axis of the container. These surface waves reflect from the container walls leading to a radially inward propagating wave-train converging (focussing) onto the symmetry axis. Under the inviscid approximation and for sufficiently shallow cavities, the relaxation is well-described by the linearised potential-flow equations. Naturally, adding viscosity to such a system introduces viscous dissipation that enervates energy and dampens the oscillations at the symmetry axis. However, for viscous liquids and deeper cavities, these equations are qualitatively inaccurate. In this study, we elucidate a modal approach to study the initial-value problem for concentric gravito-capillary waves generated on a free-surface for inviscid as well as viscous liquids. For a sufficiently deep cavity, the inward focusing of waves results in large interfacial oscillations at the axis, necessitating a second-order nonlinear theory. We demonstrate that this theory effectively models the interfacial behavior and highlights the crucial role of nonlinearity near the symmetry axis. Contrary to expectations, the addition of slight viscosity further intensifies the oscillations at the symmetry axis. This finding underscores the limitations of the potential flow model and suggests avenues for more accurate modelling of such complex free-surface flows.

Abstract: We give a combinatorial classification of torus equivariant vector bundles on a (normal) projective T-variety of complexity-one. This extends the classification of equivariant line bundles on complexity-one T-varieties by Petersen-S\"uss on one hand, and Klyachko's classification of equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties on the other hand. 48. A new standard for the logarithmic accuracy of parton showers

Abstract: We report on a major milestone in the construction of logarithmically accurate final-state parton showers, achieving next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy for the wide class of observables known as event shapes. The key to this advance lies in the identification of the relation between critical NNLL analytic resummation ingredients and their parton-shower counterparts. Our analytic discussion is supplemented with numerical tests of the logarithmic accuracy of three shower variants for more than a dozen distinct event-shape observables in $Z \to q \bar q$ and Higgs $\to gg$ decays. 49. Encoding lattice structures in Quantum Computational Basis States

Abstract: Lattice models or structures are geometrical objects with mathematical forms, that are used to represent physical systems. They have been used widely in diverse fields, namely, in condensed matter physics, to study degrees of freedom of molecules in chemistry and in studying polymer dynamics and protein structures to name a few. In this article we discuss an encoding methodology of lattice structures in computational basis states of qubits (as used in quantum computing algorithms). We demonstrate a specific use case of lattice models in protein structure prediction. We do not propose any quantum algorithm to solve the protein structure prediction problem, instead, we propose a generic encoding methodology of lattice structures.

Abstract: We develop an in-situ index of refraction profile using the transit time of radio signals broadcast from an englacial transmitter to 2-5 km distant radio-frequency receivers, deployed at depths up to 200 m. Maxwell's equations generally admit two ray propagation solutions from a given transmitter, corresponding to a direct path (D) and a refracted path (R); the measured D vs. R (dt(D,R)) timing differences provide constraints on the index of refraction profile near South Pole, where the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) neutrino observatory is located. We constrain the refractive index profile by simulating D and R ray paths via ray tracing and comparing those to measured dt(D,R) signals. Using previous ice density data as a proxy for n(z), we demonstrate that our data strongly favors a glaciologically-motivated three-phase densification model rather than a single exponential scale height model. Simulations show that the single exponential model overestimates ARA neutrino sensitivity compared to the three-phase model.
