The testing of atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion intakes is an important step in the development of functional propulsion systems which provide sustained drag compensation in very low Earth orbits. To make satellite operations more sustainable, it is necessary to develop new materials which withstand erosion, long-lasting propulsion systems to overcome drag, and tools that allow for ground-based testing. Among the tools to enable these innovations is the Rarefied Orbital Aerodynamics Research facility at the University of Manchester. Here, a description of the facility is provided together with two different methodologies for testing sub-scaled intake designs for atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion systems. The first methodology is based on measurements of the pressure difference between the two extremities of the intake, while the second uses a gas sensor to measure the collection efficiency of the intake. Direct Simulation Monte Carlo models have been used to assess the viability of the proposed testing methodologies. The results of this analysis indicate that either methodology or a combination of both can provide suitable measurements to assess the performance of future intake designs.

In this paper, we put forward a proof of concept for sixth generation (6G) Terabit infrared (IR) laser-based indoor optical wireless networks. We propose a novel double-tier access point (AP) architecture based on an array of arrays of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) to provide a seamless grid-of-beam coverage with multi-Gb/s per beam. We present systematic design and thorough analytical modeling of the AP architecture, which are then applied to downlink system modeling using non-imaging angle diversity receivers (ADRs). We propose static beam clustering with coordinated multi-beam joint transmission (CoMB-JT) for network interference management and devise various clustering strategies to address inter-beam interference (IBI) and inter-cluster interference (ICI). Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) schemes are also adopted to handle intra-cluster interference, and the resulting signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and achievable data rate are derived. The network performance is studied in terms of spatial distributions and statistics of the downlink SINR and data rate through extensive computer simulations. The results demonstrate that data rates up to 15 Gb/s are achieved within the coverage area and a properly devised clustering strikes a balance between the sum rate and fairness depending on the number of users., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

We show that the space of trace-class operators on a Hilbert module over a commutative C*-algebra, as defined and studied in earlier work of Stern and van Suijlekom (Journal of Functional Analysis, 2021), is completely isometrically isomorphic to a Haagerup tensor product of the module with its operator-theoretic adjoint. This generalises a well-known property of Hilbert spaces. In the course of proving this, we also obtain a new proof of a result of Stern-van Suijlekom concerning the equivalence between two definitions of trace-class operators on Hilbert modules., Comment: 13 pages

The development of long, tunable structures is critical to increasing energy gain in laser-driven dielectric accelerators (DLAs). Here we combine pulse-front-tilt illumination with slab-geometry structures assembled by precisely aligning off-the-shelf 4~mm long transmission gratings to achieve up to 200 keV energy modulation for 6 MeV injected electrons. The effective interaction length is longer than 1~mm, limited by dephasing of the accelerated particles in the structure. Undergraduate physics and astronomy students are expected to engage with scientific literature as they begin their research careers, but reading comprehension skills are rarely explicitly taught in major courses. We seek to determine the efficacy of lesson plans designed to improve undergraduate astronomy (or related) majors' perceived ability to engage with research literature by using accessible summaries of current research written by experts in the field. During the 2022-2023 academic year, twelve faculty members incorporated lesson plans using accessible summaries from Astrobites into their undergraduate astronomy major courses, surveyed their students before and after the activities, and participated in follow-up interviews with our research team. Quantitative and qualitative survey data clearly show that students' perceptions of their abilities with jargon, identifying main takeaways of a paper, conceptual understanding of physics and astronomy, and communicating scientific results all improved with use of the tested lesson plans. Additionally, students show evidence of increased confidence of their abilities within astronomy after exposure to these lessons, and instructors valued a ready-to-use resource to incorporate reading comprehension in their pedagogy. This case study with Astrobites-based lesson plans suggests that incorporating current research in the undergraduate classroom through accessible literature summaries may increase students' confidence and ability to engage with research literature, as well as their preparation for participation in research and applied careers., Comment: Submitted to PRPER

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will enable the search for and characterization of terrestrial exoplanet atmospheres in the habitable zone via transmission spectroscopy. However, relatively little work has been done to use solar system data, where ground truth is known, to validate spectroscopic retrieval codes intended for exoplanet studies, particularly in the limit of high resolution and high signal-to-noise (S/N). In this work, we perform such a validation by analyzing a high S/N empirical transmission spectrum of Earth using a new terrestrial exoplanet atmospheric retrieval model with heritage in Solar System remote sensing and gaseous exoplanet retrievals. We fit the Earth's 2-14 um transmission spectrum in low resolution (R=250 at 5 um) and high resolution (R=100,000 at 5 um) under a variety of assumptions about the 1D vertical atmospheric structure. In the limit of noiseless transmission spectra, we find excellent agreement between model and data (deviations < 10%) that enable the robust detection of H2O, CO2, O3, CH4, N2, N2O, NO2, HNO3, CFC-11, and CFC-12 thereby providing compelling support for the detection of habitability, biosignature, and technosignature gases in the atmosphere of the planet using an exoplanet-analog transmission spectrum. Our retrievals at high spectral resolution show a marked sensitivity to the thermal structure of the atmosphere, trace gas abundances, density-dependent effects, such as collision-induced absorption and refraction, and even hint at 3D spatial effects. However, we used synthetic observations of TRAPPIST-1e to verify that the use of simple 1D vertically homogeneous atmospheric models will likely suffice for JWST observations of terrestrial exoplanets transiting M dwarfs., Comment: 37 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables. One of the greatest challenge facing current space weather monitoring operations is forecasting the arrival of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) within their Earth-Sun propagation timescales. Current campaigns mainly rely on extreme ultra-violet and white light observations to create forecasts, missing out many potential events that may be hazardous to Earth's infrastructure undetectable at these wavelengths. Here we introduce the SURROUND mission, a constellation of CubeSats each with identical radio spectrometers, and the results of the initial Phase-0 study for the concept. The main goal of SURROUND is to monitor and track solar radio bursts (SRBs), widely utilised as a useful diagnostic for space weather activity, and revolutionise current forecasting capabilities. We introduce a strategy to study irreducible representations of automorphism groups of finite modules over local rings. To achieve multi-Gb/s data rates in 6G optical wireless access networks based on narrow infrared (IR) laser beams, a high-speed receiver with two key specifications is needed: a sufficiently large aperture to collect the required optical power and a wide field of view (FOV) to avoid strict alignment issues. This paper puts forward the systematic design and optimisation of multi-tier non-imaging angle diversity receivers (ADRs) composed of compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs) coupled with photodiode (PD) arrays for laser-based optical wireless communication (OWC) links. Design tradeoffs include the gain-FOV tradeoff for each receiver element and the area-bandwidth tradeoff for each PD array. The rate maximisation is formulated as a non-convex optimisation problem under the constraints on the minimum required FOV and the overall ADR dimensions to find optimum configuration of the receiver bandwidth and FOV, and a low-complexity optimal solution is proposed. The ADR performance is studied using computer simulations and insightful design guidelines are provided through various numerical examples. An efficient technique is also proposed to reduce the ADR dimensions based on CPC length truncation. It is shown that a compact ADR with a height of $\leq0.5$ cm and an effective area of $\leq0.5$ cm$^2$ reaches a data rate of $12$ Gb/s with a half-angle FOV of $30^\circ$ over a $3$ m link distance.

Challenging space missions include those at very low altitudes, where the atmosphere is source of aerodynamic drag on the spacecraft that finally defines the missions lifetime unless way to compensate for it is provided. This environment is named Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) and is defined for $h<450~km$. In addition to the satellite's aerodynamic design, to extend the lifetime of such missions an efficient propulsion system is required. One solution is Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) that collects atmospheric particles to be used as propellant for an electric thruster. The system would minimize the requirement of limited propellant availability and can also be applied to any planetary body with atmosphere, enabling new missions at low altitude ranges for longer times. One of the objectives of the H2020 DISCOVERER project, is the development of an intake and an electrode-less plasma thruster for an ABEP system. The article describes the characteristics of intake design and the respective final deigns providing collection efficiencies up to $94\%$. On the other side, the radio frequency (RF) Helicon-based plasma thruster (IPT) developed at IRS, is hereby presented as well, while its performances are being evaluated, the thruster has been operated with single atmospheric species as propellant, and has highlighted very low input power requirement for operation at comparable mass flow rates $P\sim 60~W$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2106.15912

Operating satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) benefits the already expanding New Space industry in applications including Earth Observation and beyond. However, long-term operations at such low altitudes require propulsion systems to compensate for the large aerodynamic drag forces. When using conventional propulsion systems, the amount of storable propellant limits the maximum mission lifetime. The latter can be avoided by employing Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) system, which collects the residual atmospheric particles and uses them as propellant for an electric thruster. Thus, the requirement of on-board propellant storage can ideally be nullified. At the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) of the University of Stuttgart, an intake, and a RF Helicon-based Plasma Thruster (IPT) for ABEP system are developed within the Horizons 2020 funded DISCOVERER project. In order to assess possible future use cases, this paper proposes and analyzes several novel ABEP based mission scenarios. Beginning with technology demonstration mission in VLEO, more complex mission scenarios are derived and discussed in detail. These include, amongst others, orbit maintenance around Mars as well as refuelling and space tug missions. The results show that the ABEP system is not only able to compensate drag for orbit maintenance but also capable of performing orbital maneuvers and collect propellant for applications such as Space Tug and Refuelling. Several constructions on directed graphs originating in the study of flow equivalence in symbolic dynamics (e.g., splittings and delays) are known to preserve the Morita equivalence class of Leavitt path algebras over any coefficient field F. We prove that many of these equivalence results are not only independent of F, but are largely independent of linear algebra altogether. We do this by formulating and proving generalisations of these equivalence theorems in which the category of F-vector spaces is replaced by an arbitrary category with binary coproducts, showing that the Morita equivalence results for Leavitt path algebras depend only on the ability to form direct sums of vector spaces. We suggest that the framework developed in this paper may be useful in studying other problems related to Morita equivalence of Leavitt path algebras., Comment: 32 pages

The Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI) mission described herein has been selected for flight to Venus as part of the NASA Discovery Program. DAVINCI will be the first mission to Venus to incorporate science-driven flybys and an instrumented descent sphere into a unified architecture. The anticipated scientific outcome will be a new understanding of the atmosphere, surface, and evolutionary path of Venus as a possibly once-habitable planet and analog to hot terrestrial exoplanets. The primary mission design for DAVINCI as selected features a preferred launch in summer/fall 2029, two flybys in 2030, and descent sphere atmospheric entry by the end of 2031. The in situ atmospheric descent phase subsequently delivers definitive chemical and isotopic composition of the Venus atmosphere during a cloud-top to surface transect above Alpha Regio. These in situ investigations of the atmosphere and near infrared descent imaging of the surface will complement remote flyby observations of the dynamic atmosphere, cloud deck, and surface near infrared emissivity. The overall mission yield will be at least 60 Gbits (compressed) new data about the atmosphere and near surface, as well as first unique characterization of the deep atmosphere environment and chemistry, including trace gases, key stable isotopes, oxygen fugacity, constraints on local rock compositions, and topography of a tessera., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal

With the proliferation of online Zoom meetings as a means of doing science in the 2020s, astronomers have made new and unexpected Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations. Chief among these ToOs are observations of exop(lan)ets, or "exopets." Building on the work of Mayorga et al. (2021) - whose work characterized the rotational variations of "floofy" objects - we model exopets using methods similar to those used for exoplanetary transits. We present data collected for such exopet Zoom transits through a citizen science program in the month of February 2022. The dataset includes parameters like exopet color, floofiness, transit duration, and percentage of Zoom screen covered during the event. For some targets, we also present microlensing and direct imaging data. Using results from our modelling of 62 exopet observations as transits, microlensing, and direct imaging events, we discuss our inferences of exopet characteristics like their masses, sizes, orbits, colors, and floofiness., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, 62 floofers

A fundamental theorem of linear algebra asserts that every basis for the vector space $\mathbb{R}^n$ has $n$ elements. In this expository note we present a theorem of W. G. This paper discusses the design and the performance achievable with active aerodynamic attitude control in very low Earth orbit, i.e. below 450 km in altitude. A novel real-time algorithm is proposed for selecting the angles of deflection of aerodynamic actuators providing the closest match to the control signal computed by a selected control law. The algorithm is based on a panel method for the computation of the aerodynamic coefficients and relies on approximate environmental parameters estimation and worst-case scenario assumptions for the re-emission properties of space materials. Discussion of results is performed by assuming two representative pointing manoeuvres, for which momentum wheels and aerodynamic actuators are used synergistically. A quaternion feedback PID controller implemented in discrete time is assumed to determine the control signal at a sampling frequency of 1 Hz. The outcome of a Monte Carlo analysis, performed for a wide range of orbital conditions, shows that the target attitude is successfully achieved for the vast majority of the cases, thus proving the robustness of the approach in the presence of environmental uncertainties and realistic attitude hardware limitations., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in AIAA Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics (2022-01-04)

We present a new approach to exoplanet characterisation using techniques from complexity science, with potential applications to biosignature detection. This agnostic method makes use of the temporal variability of light reflected or emitted from a planet. We use a technique known as epsilon machine reconstruction to compute the statistical complexity, a measure of the minimal model size for time series data. We demonstrate that statistical complexity is an effective measure of the complexity of planetary features. Increasing levels of qualitative planetary complexity correlate with increases in statistical complexity and Shannon entropy, demonstrating that our approach can identify planets with the richest dynamics. We also compare Earth time series with Jupiter data, and find that for the three wavelengths considered, Earth's average complexity and entropy rate are approximately 50% and 43% higher than Jupiter's, respectively. The majority of schemes for the detection of extraterrestrial life rely upon biochemical signatures and planetary context. However, it is increasingly recognised that extraterrestrial life could be very different to life on Earth. Under the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the presence of a biosphere and observable planetary complexity, our technique offers an agnostic and quantitative method for the measurement thereof.

We present the validation of ADBSat, a novel implementation of the panel method including a fast pseudo-shading algorithm, that can quickly and accurately determine the forces and torques on satellites in free-molecular flow. Our main method of validation is comparing test cases between ADBSat, the current de facto standard of direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), and published literature. ADBSat exhibits a significantly shorter runtime than DSMC and performs well, except where deep concavities are present in the satellite models. The shading algorithm also experiences problems when a large proportion of the satellite surface area is oriented parallel to the flow, but this can be mitigated by examining the body at small angles to this configuration (${\pm}$ 0.1{\deg}). We recommend that an error interval on ADBSat outputs of up to 3\% is adopted. Therefore, ADBSat is a suitable tool for quickly determining the aerodynamic characteristics of a wide range of satellite geometries in different environmental conditions in VLEO.
