Abstract: Modeling the intrinsic alignment (IA) of galaxies poses a challenge to weak lensing analyses. The Dark Energy Survey is expected to be less impacted by IA when limited to blue, star-forming galaxies. The cosmological parameter constraints from this blue cosmic shear sample are stable to IA model choice, unlike passive galaxies in the full DES Y3 sample, the goodness-of-fit is improved and the $\Omega_{m}$ and $S_8$ better agree with the cosmic microwave background. Mitigating IA with sample selection, instead of flexible model choices, can reduce uncertainty in $S_8$ by a factor of 1.5., Comment: Data access available at https://jamiemccullough.github.io/data/blueshear/

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 3. Hardy's Uncertainty principle for Schr\'odinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians

Abstract: Hardy's uncertainty principle is a classical result in harmonic analysis, stating that a function in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and its Fourier transform cannot both decay arbitrarily fast at infinity. In this paper, we extend this principle to the propagators of Schr\"odinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians, known in the literature as metaplectic operators. These operators generalize the Fourier transform and have captured significant attention in recent years due to their wide-ranging applications in time-frequency analysis, quantum harmonic analysis, signal processing, and various other fields. However, the involved structure of these operators requires careful analysis, and most results obtained so far concern special propagators that can basically be reduced to rescaled Fourier transforms. The main contributions of this work are threefold: (1) we extend Hardy's uncertainty principle, covering all propagators of Schr\"odinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians, (2) we provide concrete examples, such as fractional Fourier transforms, which arise when considering anisotropic harmonic oscillators, (3) we suggest Gaussian decay conditions in certain directions only, which are related to the structure of the corresponding symplectic projection.

4. Wright--Fisher kernels: from linear to non-linear dynamics, ergodicity and McKean--Vlasov scaling limits

Abstract: We consider a population of hosts infected by a pathogen that exists in two strains. We use a two-parameter family of Markov kernels on $[0,1]$ to describe the discrete-time evolution of the pathogen type-composition within and across individuals. First, we assume that there is no interaction between pathogen populations across host individuals. For a particular class of parameters, we establish moment duality between the type-frequency process and a process reminiscent of the \emph{Ancestral Selection Graph}. We also show convergence, under appropriate scaling of parameters and time, to a Wright-Fisher diffusion with drift. Next, we assume that pathogen-type compositions are correlated across hosts by their empirical measure. We show a propagation of chaos result comparing the pathogen type-composition of a given host with the evolution of a non-linear chain. Furthermore, we show that under appropriate scaling, the non-linear chain converges to a McKean-Vlasov diffusion. To illustrate our results, we consider a population affected by mutation rates that depend on the instantaneous distribution across multiple hosts. 5. Deep Optimal Sensor Placement for Black Box Stochastic Simulations

Abstract: Selecting cost-effective optimal sensor configurations for subsequent inference of parameters in black-box stochastic systems faces significant computational barriers. We propose a novel and robust approach, modelling the joint distribution over input parameters and solution with a joint energy-based model, trained on simulation data. Unlike existing simulation-based inference approaches, which must be tied to a specific set of point evaluations, we learn a functional representation of parameters and solution. This is used as a resolution-independent plug-and-play surrogate for the joint distribution, which can be conditioned over any set of points, permitting an efficient approach to sensor placement. We demonstrate the validity of our framework on a variety of stochastic problems, showing that our method provides highly informative sensor locations at a lower computational cost compared to conventional approaches., Comment: 23 pages

6. Flagellar damage and recovery in soil bacteria exposed to shear in long microchannels

Abstract: The outermost structure of the bacterial flagellar motor is a long helicoidal filament, whose protein building blocks are produced and injected from the base, progressively elongating the filament and regenerating it in case it breaks. Here, we study the evolution of flagellar filaments in the soil bacterium $\textit{Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens}$ after being exposed to shear flows, for shear rates between 1 s$^{-1}$ and $10^5$ s$^{-1}$, and for durations between tens of milliseconds and minutes. We demonstrate that the average swimming speed and fraction of swimming cells decrease after exposition to shear, but both parameters can recover, at least partially, with time. These observations support the hypothesis that flagellar filaments are cut by shear flows, but that reversibly damaged flagellar motors can be restored thanks to filament regeneration. By fitting our observations with phenomenological expressions, we obtain the individual growth rates of the two different flagellar filaments that $\textit{B. diazoefficiens}$ possesses, showing that the lateral filaments have a recovery time of about 40 min while the subpolar one requires more than 4.5 h to regrow. Our work demonstrates that a simple monitoring of bacterial motility after exposition to shear can be used to characterise the process of flagellar filament growth., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 8. Two waves of adaptation: speciation induced by dormancy in a model with changing environment

Abstract: We consider a population model in which the season alternates between winter and summer, and individuals can acquire mutations either that are advantageous in the summer and disadvantageous in the winter, or vice versa. Also, we assume that individuals in the population can either be active or dormant, and that individuals can move between these two states. Dormant individuals do not reproduce but do not experience selective pressures. We show that, under certain conditions, over time we see two waves of adaptation. Some individuals repeatedly acquire mutations that are beneficial in the summer, while others repeatedly acquire mutations that are beneficial in the winter. Individuals can survive the season during which they are less fit by entering a dormant state. 9. Oxygen vacancies in BaTiO3 based ferroelectrics: electron doping, history dependence of Tc and domain wall pinning

Abstract: We measured the complex Young's modulus of BaTiO3-d, BaxSr1-xTi3-d (BST) and Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3-d (BCTZ) during heating and cooling runs at various O deficiencies and aging times. The elastic energy loss has peaks due to the jumps of isolated O vacancies (VO) and reorientations of pairs of VO in the paraelectric phase, from which the respective rates and activation energies are measured. These rates control the mechanisms of domain clamping, pinning, fatigue, and anything related to the VO mobility. In the ferroelectric (FE) phase, the drop of the losses due to the domain wall motion upon introduction of VO monitors the degree of pinning. In addition, large shifts of Tc are observed at the same value of d upon varying the permanence time in the FE state, up to DTc = 21K in BST, while no aging effect is found in BCTZ. The phenomenology is explained by considering that Tc is depressed mainly by the mobile electrons doped by VO. Each isolated VO dopes two electrons as itinerant Ti^3+ ions, but, when it forms a stable linear VO-Ti^2+-VO pair, the two electrons of the Ti^2+ are subtracted from the mobile ones, halving doping. The rise of Tc during the initial aging is then explained in terms of the progressive aggregation of the VO. Prolonging aging for years leads to a decrease of Tc, explained assuming that the most stable position of a VO is at 90^o domain walls, whose geometry is incompatible with the pairs. Then, after enough time the initially aggregated VO within the domains dissociate to decorate the 90^o walls, increasing doping and lowering Tc. The absence of such effects in BCTZ is due to larger activation energy for pair reorientation and pair binding energy. Then, at room temperature practically all VO are paired and static over a time scale of hundreds of years, explaining the superior resistance of BCTZ to fatigue.

Abstract: Introduction and Objective: This study aimed to determine the hepatoprotective effect of caffeine against Ischemia-Reperfusion (IR) damage in Wistar rats. Material and methods: Eighteen female Wistar rats were divided into three groups (Sham, IR, Caffeine+IR, n=6). Hepatic ischemia was induced at 70% with 1 and 2 hours of reperfusion. The vehicle (saline solution) or 20 mg/kg of caffeine was administered before the induction of IR. The hepatoprotective effect was evaluated with biochemical markers, relative expression of genes associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, proinflammatory cytokines, and histology. The trial was approved by the research ethics committee. Results: Caffeine significantly reduced levels of ALT, AST and direct bilirubin vs. IR group. Regarding the relative expression of genes, a significant decrease in the expression of the GPX, NF-κβ and IL-1β genes was observed in the group treated with caffeine, while there was a decrease in the concentrations of IL-Iß, IL -6 and TNF-α; however, only TNF- α had a significant decrease. No histological changes were observed in the study groups Discussion: Caffeine treatment was shown to have a hepatoprotective effect against IR injury, possibly because it is a non-selective antagonist of the adenosine receptor. It has previously been shown that, in the liver, an extracellular increase in adenosine followed by its binding to its A2 receptor, serves to signal an increase in nitric oxide synthesis, which was associated with a cytoprotective effect against IR injury. Abstract: Introduction and Objective: To evaluate the lipid-lowering activity of cinnamon essential oil in a model of acute hyperlipidemia induced by Triton WR-1339 in Wistar rats. Material and methods: Male and female Wistar rats 250-350g were divided randomly into five groups of six rats: Normal control group (SHAM), hyperlipidemic group (HL), non-toxicity cinnamon group (NO TOX), cinnamon essential oil + Triton WR-1339 group (AEC), atorvastatin treatment group (ATORV).Orogastric administration was performed for seven days and subsequently, triton or vehicle was administered intraperitoneally for 24 hours before undergoing sacrifice. The non-toxicity of cinnamon essential oil at a concentration of 200mg/kg, biochemical markers, proinflammatory cytokines and expression of genes associated with oxidative stress and inflammation were evaluated. The trial was approved by the research ethics committee. Results: No increase in liver enzymes was observed in rats from the group of non-toxicity. Cinnamon essential oil administration significantly reduced cholesterol (COL), triglycerides (TG), and VLDL levels. Regarding the measurement of proinflammatory cytokines and expression of genes related to oxidative stress and inflammation, no effect was observed on these parameters at the evaluated dose of cinnamon essential oil. Discussion: Cinnamon essential oil treatment showed a significant reduction in COL, TG and VLDL levels, displaying a higher effectivity than atorvastatin. The non-significant results in the levels of cytokines and expression of genes related to oxidative stress and inflammation could be attributed to the acute damage model employed; had more time been given to the model, said makers might have been activated. Conclusions: The hypolipidemic activity of cinnamon essential oil was demonstrated to be more effective than atorvastatin. Abstract: Introduction and Objectives: Autoimmune liver disease (AILD) is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease (CLD). It comprises autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and immunoglobulin G4-associated cholangitis (IgG4-AC). Patients who exhibit features of two or more AILD are classified as overlap syndromes (OS); the most commonly seen is AIH/PBC. The aim of this study was to report trends of AILD in a liver unit (LU) over 26 years. Material and Methods: Clinical records of patients who attended for the first time to LU, from January 1995 to December 2020 were included. There were 469 patients classified as AILD, and 462 were included, 408 (88%) females, mean age was 48 ± 14 (range. 4 - 78yo). Patients were divided into the three most common AILD: AIH, PBC, and OS. PSC and IgG4-AC were not included because they are very rare in our population. Diagnosis of AILD was made according to international guidelines, considering clinical manifestations, autoantibodies such as antinuclear antibodies (ANA), smooth muscle antibody (SMA), liver-kidney microsomal antibody (LKM), antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA), and when available: type 2 AMA, ANA gp210, liver biopsy, and non-invasive study of liver fibrosis. Inclusion criteria: patients with confirmed or suspected AILD in their first visit to the outpatient clinic. Diagnosis could be confirmed in subsequent visits. Other etiologies of CLD were excluded. Results: Over 26 years, trends of AILD have increased at the expense of AIH mainly (figure). The distribution of AILD was: AIH 289, PBC 143, and OS 30. Half the patients had cirrhosis (48%) on admission (AIH 58%, PBC 41%, and OS 31%). We found no statistically significant difference between AILD groups in cases and percentage of cases, (F (2,23) = 3.252, p = 0.057) and (F (2,23) = 0.996, p = 0.385) respectively. Autoantibodies available on admission were 95% in AIH, 82.5% in PBC, and 93% in OS. In AIH patients, 95% had ANA and/or AML positivity (≤1:40), and 78% (≤1:80), 11% had LKM positive. In PBC patients, 80% were positive for AMA, and of these, 48% had AMA2 positive. OS patients had 68% ANA and 69% AMA positivity. (Figure 1). Conclusions: The most common AILD seen in a period of 26 years was AIH; a high proportion of these patients had ANA and/or AML positive. Half of the PBC patients with AMA positive were also AMA2 positive. Two-thirds of OS patients exhibited ANA and AMA, confirming AIH/PBC. As in other CLD in Mexico, half the patients had cirrhosis on admission. Abstract: Introduction and Objective: Death due to liver damage caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) represents one of the most frequent health threats in Mexico. However, the complete genome of HCV has not yet been sequenced. The aim of this study was to obtain the complete genome sequence of HCV isolated from patients in Mexico. Materials and Methods: We evaluated patients with hepatitis C who sought medical care at the “Liver Unit” that belongs to the “Hospital Universitario Dr. José Eleuterio” in Monterrey, Mexico from May 2016 to August 2019. We extracted RNA from five samples and amplified the whole genome of HCV with tiled-PCR. Amplicons were sequenced with MinION, a third-generation sequencer technology. Obtained sequences were assembled with the Genome Detective program and posteriorly analyzed with IQtree platform. Results: We obtained four partial and one complete VHC genome that corresponded to genotype 1b. The average coverage of the complete genome was 600X. The phylogenetic analysis of the complete genome showed that this sequence from Mexico was related to viruses isolated in the United States of America, Indonesia, and Japan. Because there is not a full HCV complete genome sequenced before in our country, we used the partial viral genomes reported before in Mexico to compare NS3 and NS5A genes with our reported sequences. The NS3 gene alignment showed that the newly sequenced viruses grouped in a clade different from the previously sequenced viruses. When NS5A gene was used, the newly obtained sequences grouped with the previously sequenced viruses in Mexico. Conclusion: We were able to obtain the first complete and four partial HCV genomes from Mexican patients. This newly sequenced virus will improve the molecular epidemiology of HCV in Mexico. 18. Identification of resistance mutations to DAA's against Hepatitis C Virus in infected subjects in Mexico

Abstract: Introduction and Objectives: Death due to liver damage caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), this agent represents one of the most frequent health threats in Mexico. Now direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA's) are available to treat HCV infections. Nevertheless, HCV has gained mutations that hinder the antiviral effect. The presence of these mutations in Mexico is unknown. The aim of this study was to identify resistance-associated substitutions (RAS) in subjects infected with HCV from Mexico. Materials and Methods: We evaluated patients with hepatitis C who sought medical care at the “Liver Unit” that belongs to the “Hospital Universitario Dr. José Eleuterio” in Monterrey, Mexico from May 2016 to August 2019. We extracted RNA from five samples and amplified the whole genome of HCV with tiled-PCR. Amplicons were sequenced with MinION, a third-generation sequencer. Obtained sequences were assembled with the Genome Detective program and resistance-associated substitutions were identified with HCV-Glue software. Results: We obtained four partial and one complete VHC genome. According to HCV-glue algorithm, we detected one virus with resistance to daclatasvir, and probable resistance to ledipasvir and velpatasvir. Another HCV with probable resistance to daclatasvir and ombitasvir and possible resistance to grazoprevir, peritaprevir and ledipasvir. Two HCV isolated had probable resistance to daclatasvir and possible resistance to grazoprevir and peritaprevir. Only one HCV had probable resistance to daclatasvir. Conclusion: We detected one HCV with resistance to daclatasvir and four other viruses with probable antiviral resistance mutations. These findings are crucial to effectively managing the patient's treatment. 19. Whiteness and Fear: Backlash to Mathematics Education Reforms

Abstract: Recent reform efforts to center issues of equity and social justice in mathematics classrooms have been under fire from the loudest sectors of right-wing media. The hysteria around incorporating social justice issues in mathematics classrooms is captured in the artificial binary: STEM or CRT. In our paper, we examine resistance to reform efforts in mathematics education in artifacts geared towards audiences beyond mathematics education researchers through the lens of whiteness. We analyzed artifacts from the Math Wars of the late 1990's and the current backlash towards mathematics education reform (Math Culture Wars) in California and Florida. We identified fear as a significant mechanism to upholding whiteness in the backlash to mathematics education reforms, particularly centering white fear. By describing how fear is constructed in the artifacts, scholars may find more targeted responses to the backlash by addressing the ideas perpetuated in these artifacts. Still, the field of mathematics education has done little to become more inclusive and just because our agenda is too closely aligned to the status quo, with responses to the backlash being largely absent or tepid. We close with recommendations for action and allyship within the broader field of education to thwart the hysteria against CRT.

Abstract: Previous studies have reported alterations in cortical thickness in autism. However, few have included enough autistic females to determine if there are sex specific differences in cortical structure in autism. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate autistic sex differences in cortical thickness and trajectory of cortical thinning across childhood. Participants included 290 autistic (88 females) and 139 nonautistic (60 females) individuals assessed at up to 4 timepoints spanning ~2-13 years of age (918 total MRI timepoints). Estimates of cortical thickness in early and late childhood as well as the trajectory of cortical thinning were modeled using spatiotemporal linear mixed effects models of age-by-sex-by-diagnosis. Additionally, the spatial correspondence between cortical maps of sex-by-diagnosis differences and neurotypical sex differences were evaluated. Relative to their nonautistic peers, autistic females had more extensive cortical differences than autistic males. These differences involved multiple functional networks, and were mainly characterized by thicker cortex at ~3 years of age and faster cortical thinning in autistic females. Cortical regions in which autistic alterations were different between the sexes significantly overlapped with regions that differed by sex in neurotypical development. Autistic females and males demonstrated some shared differences in cortical thickness and rate of cortical thinning across childhood relative to their nonautistic peers, however these areas were relatively small compared to the widespread differences observed across the sexes. These results support evidence of sex-specific neurobiology in autism and suggest that processes that regulate sex differentiation in the neurotypical brain contribute to sex differences in the etiology of autism.

Abstract: PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the current review is to analyze the current literature regarding the tools available to evaluate patient expectations and satisfaction. There have been an increasing number of tools that have been developed and validated for various orthopedic procedures. Despite the growing number of tools, there are a limited number of tools available for pediatric patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Several tools have been developed in orthopedics to evaluate patient expectations. However, there are no tools that have been validated in the pediatric population. In addition, pediatric patient expectations should be collected in conjunction with parent/caregiver expectations. Although not specifically validated for pediatric patients, there are several tools available that may pertain to pediatric patients including the HSS ACL Expectations Survey, HSS Shoulder Expectations Survey, HSS Knee Surgery Expectations Survey, HSS Foot and Ankle Surgery Expectation Survey, Sunnybrook Surgery Expectations Survey, Musculoskeletal Outcomes Data Evaluation and Management System (MODEMS) Instruments, Quick DASH, and DASH. In terms of patient satisfaction, there are even fewer tools available. Several tools have been developed to evaluate patient satisfaction and five additional tools within orthopedics. Of these tools, there are two that have been validated for pediatric patients: The Swedish Parents Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Scoliosis Research Society-22. There are a growing number of tools to evaluate patients expectations and satisfaction in the orthopedic literature. Given most of these tools pertain to adult patients, there is a need for further development of tools specifically validated for pediatric patients and their parents/caregivers. Through the measurement of expectations and satisfaction, medical professionals can hope to improve satisfaction and outcomes.

22. Exciton Coulomb correlations in axially symmetric II-VI nanocrystals

Abstract: Because of their conveniently tunable optoelectronic properties, semiconductor nanocrystals have become established components for new devices and emergent technologies, in a broad range of applications which include agriculture, medicine, energy harvesting and quantum information. In this work we study the dielectric and quantum confinement effects on excitons confined in single axially symmetric quantum dots, and systematically calculate by means of the configuration interaction method the corresponding Coulomb correlations in the cases of CdSe, CdTe and ZnTe nanocrystals. % to quantify the effects on the system energy due to the Coulomb interaction. We show that effects from the dielectric confinement, although one order of magnitude bigger than those from the quantum confinement, are negligible in the exciton energies because of mutual cancellation of the electron and hole contributions. Regarding the electrostatic interaction, we found for all analyzed cases that the exciton binding energy is below 2\% of the non-interacting electron-hole pair energy. Furthermore, our calculations reveal that the in general the first-order-perturbation correction accounts for 70 \% to 90 \% of the binding energy. These results provide useful information on the magnitude of the confinement effects in II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals, suggesting that a simple perturbative approach may be accurate enough for including the electrostatic interaction in most cases.

23. A comparison of h- and p-refinement to capture wind turbine wakes

Abstract: This paper investigates a critical aspect of wind energy research - the development of wind turbine wake and its significant impact on wind farm efficiency. The study focuses on the exploration and comparison of two mesh refinement strategies, h- and p-refinement, in their ability to accurately compute the development of wind turbine wake. The h-refinement method refines the mesh by reducing the size of the elements, while the p-refinement method increases the polynomial degree of the elements, potentially reducing the error exponentially for smooth flows. A comprehensive comparison of these methods is presented that evaluates their effectiveness, computational efficiency, and suitability for various scenarios in wind energy. The findings of this research could potentially guide future studies and applications in wind turbine wake modeling, thus contributing to the optimization of wind farms using high-order h/p methods. Inspired by their method, based on the Fokker-Planck semi-group, we extend the inequality to non-even functions. We consider a well-chosen centering procedure by studying the infimum over translations in a double Laplace transform. 26. Dissolution zone model of the oxide structure in additively manufactured dispersion-strengthened alloys

Abstract: The structural evolution of oxides in dispersion-strengthened superalloys during laser-powder bed fusion is considered in detail. Alloy chemistry and process parameter effects on oxide structure are assessed through a parameter study on the model alloy Ni-20Cr, doped with varying concentrations of Y2O3 and Al. A scaling analysis of mass and momentum transport within the melt pool, presented here, establishes that diffusional structural evolution mechanisms dominate for nanoscale dispersoids, while fluid forces and advection become significant for larger micron-scale slag inclusions. These findings are developed into a theory of dispersoid structural evolution, integrating quantitative models of diffusional processes -- dispersoid dissolution, nucleation, growth, coarsening -- with a reduced order model of time-temperature trajectories of fluid parcels within the melt pool. Calculations of the dispersoid size in single-pass melting reveal a zone in the center of the melt track in which the oxide feedstock fully dissolves. Within this zone the final Y2O3 size is independent of feedstock size and determined by nucleation and growth kinetics. If the dissolution zones of adjacent melt tracks overlap sufficiently with each other to dissolve large oxides, formed during printing or present in the powder feedstock, then the dispersoid structure throughout the build volume is homogeneous and matches that from a single pass within the dissolution zone. Gaps between adjacent dissolution zones result in oxide accumulation into larger slag inclusions. Predictions of final dispersoid size and slag formation using this dissolution zone model match the present experimental data and explain process-structure linkages speculated in the open literature.

Abstract: Characterization of the redshift distribution of ensembles of galaxies is pivotal for large scale structure cosmological studies. In this work, we focus on improving the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) methodology for photometric redshift estimation (SOMPZ), specifically in anticipation of the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (DES Y6) data. This data set, featuring deeper and fainter galaxies than DES Year 3 (DES Y3), demands adapted techniques to ensure accurate recovery of the underlying redshift distribution. We investigate three strategies for enhancing the existing SOM-based approach used in DES Y3: 1) Replacing the Y3 SOM algorithm with one tailored for redshift estimation challenges; 2) Incorporating $\textit{g}$-band flux information to refine redshift estimates (i.e. using $\textit{griz}$ fluxes as opposed to only $\textit{riz}$); 3) Augmenting redshift data for galaxies where available. These methods are applied to DES Y3 data, and results are compared to the Y3 fiducial ones. Our analysis indicates significant improvements with the first two strategies, notably reducing the overlap between redshift bins. By combining strategies 1 and 2, we have successfully managed to reduce redshift bin overlap in DES Y3 by up to 66$\%$. Conversely, the third strategy, involving the addition of redshift data for selected galaxies as an additional feature in the method, yields inferior results and is abandoned. Our findings contribute to the advancement of weak lensing redshift characterization and lay the groundwork for better redshift characterization in DES Year 6 and future stage IV surveys, like the Rubin Observatory.

Abstract: We developed SaludConectaMX as a comprehensive system to track and understand the determinants of complications throughout chemotherapy treatment for children with cancer in Mexico. SaludConectaMX is unique in that it integrates patient clinical indicators with social determinants and caregiver mental health, forming a social-clinical perspective of the patient's evolving health trajectory. The system is composed of a web application (for hospital staff) and a mobile application (for family caregivers), providing the opportunity for cooperative patient monitoring in both hospital and home settings. This paper presents the system's preliminary design and usability evaluation results from a 1.5-year pilot study. Our findings indicate that while the hospital web app demonstrates high completion rates and user satisfaction, the family mobile app requires additional improvements for optimal accessibility; statistical and qualitative data analysis illuminate pathways for system improvement. Based on this evidence, we formalize suggestions for health system development in LMICs, which HCI researchers may leverage in future work.

Abstract: We present galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements using a sample of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) drawn from the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (Y3) data as lenses. LSBGs are diffuse galaxies with a surface brightness dimmer than the ambient night sky. These dark-matter-dominated objects are intriguing due to potentially unusual formation channels that lead to their diffuse stellar component. Given the faintness of LSBGs, using standard observational techniques to characterize their total masses proves challenging. Weak gravitational lensing, which is less sensitive to the stellar component of galaxies, could be a promising avenue to estimate the masses of LSBGs. Our LSBG sample consists of 23,790 galaxies separated into red and blue color types at $g-i\ge 0.60$ and $g-i< 0.60$, respectively. Combined with the DES Y3 shear catalog, we measure the tangential shear around these LSBGs and find signal-to-noise ratios of 6.67 for the red sample, 2.17 for the blue sample, and 5.30 for the full sample. We use the clustering redshifts method to obtain redshift distributions for the red and blue LSBG samples. Assuming all red LSBGs are satellites, we fit a simple model to the measurements and estimate the host halo mass of these LSBGs to be $\log(M_{\rm host}/M_{\odot}) = 12.98 ^{+0.10}_{-0.11}$. We place a 95% upper bound on the subhalo mass at $\log(M_{\rm sub}/M_{\odot})<11.51$. By contrast, we assume the blue LSBGs are centrals, and place a 95% upper bound on the halo mass at $\log(M_\mathrm{host}/M_\odot) < 11.84$. We find that the stellar-to-halo mass ratio of the LSBG samples is consistent with that of the general galaxy population. 30. Spinning Black Hole Scattering at $\mathcal{O}(G^3 S^2)$: Casimir Terms, Radial Action and Hidden Symmetry

Abstract: We resolve subtleties in calculating the post-Minksowskian dynamics of binary systems, as a spin expansion, from massive scattering amplitudes of fixed finite spin. In particular, the apparently ambiguous spin Casimir terms can be fully determined from the gradient of the spin-diagonal part of the amplitudes with respect to $S^2 = -s(s+1)\hbar^2$, using an interpolation between massive amplitudes with different spin representations. From two-loop amplitudes of spin-0 and spin-1 particles minimally coupled to gravity, we extract the spin Casimir terms in the conservative scattering angle between a spinless and a spinning black hole at $\mathcal{O}(G^3 S^2)$, finding agreement with known results in the literature. This completes an earlier study [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130 (2023), 021601] that calculated the non-Casimir terms from amplitudes. We also illustrate our methods using a model of spinning bodies in electrodynamics, finding agreement between scattering amplitude predictions and classical predictions in a root-Kerr electromagnetic background up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^3 S^2)$. For both gravity and electrodynamics, the finite part of the amplitude coincides with the two-body radial action in the aligned spin limit, generalizing the amplitude-action relation beyond the spinless case. Surprisingly, the two-loop amplitude displays a hidden spin-shift symmetry in the probe limit, which was previously observed at one loop. Abstract: Numerous non-standard interactions between neutrinos and scalar fields have been suggested in the literature. In this work, we have outlined the case of tensorial neutrino non-standard interactions with scalar fields, which can be related to the effective CPT-even dimension-4 operators of the Standard Model Extension (SME). Moreover, in this paper, we have mostly analyzed the projected sensitivities to the CPT-even isotropic $c_{\alpha \beta}$ and $Z-$spatial $c_{\alpha \beta}^{ZZ}$ SME coefficients, in the context of a long-baseline experimental configuration. We study the particular case of DUNE and show its sensitivity to this type of new physics. The current IceCube experiment and upcoming neutrino experiments such as KM3NeT, IceCube-Gen2, and GRAND proposals may clarify these classes of neutrino non-standard interactions., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

34. Killing versus catastrophes in birth-death processes and an application to population genetics

Abstract: We establish connections between the absorption probabilities of a class of birth-death processes with killing, and the stationary tail distributions of a related class of birth-death processes with catastrophes. Major ingredients of the proofs are an excursion decomposition of sample paths, a generalised detailed-balance condition, and representations of our processes in terms of superpositions of simpler processes. An overarching role is played by Siegmund duality, which allows us to invert the relationship between the processes. Abstract: Quantum machine learning (QML) investigates how quantum phenomena can be exploited in order to learn data in an alternative way, \textit{e.g.} by means of a quantum computer. While recent results evidence that QML models can potentially surpass their classical counterparts' performance in specific tasks, quantum technology hardware is still unready to reach quantum advantage in tasks of significant relevance to the broad scope of the computer science community. Recent advances indicate that hybrid classical-quantum models can readily attain competitive performances at low architecture complexities. Such investigations are often carried out for image-processing tasks, and are notably constrained to modelling \textit{raster images}, represented as a grid of two-dimensional pixels. Here, we introduce vector-based representation of sketch drawings as a test-bed for QML models. Such a lower-dimensional data structure results handful to benchmark model's performance, particularly in current transition times, where classical simulations of quantum circuits are naturally limited in the number of qubits, and quantum hardware is not readily available to perform large-scale experiments. We report some encouraging results for primitive hybrid classical-quantum architectures, in a canonical sketch recognition problem.

36. Neutrino Lorentz invariance violation and ultralight axion-like dark matter searches at the European Spallation Source

Abstract: The dark matter conundrum stands out as one of the central challenges to understand in both particle physics and cosmology. The ultralight axion-like particle (UALP) is an appealing dark matter candidate that can be searched for in neutrino oscillation experiments. In this work, we examined the interaction among neutrinos and a UALP; such interaction might induce violations of the Lorentz and $CPT$ symmetries. 37. Bernstein duality revisited: frequency-dependent selection, coordinated mutation and opposing environments

Abstract: Population models usually come in pairs; one process describes forward evolution (e.g. type composition) and the other describes backward evolution (e.g. lines of descent). These processes are often linked by a formal relationship known as duality. Ideally, one of the two processes is easier to analyze, and the duality relation is so simple that properties of the more involved process can be inferred from the simpler one. This is the case when the forward process admits a moment dual. Unfortunately, moment duality seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Various approaches have been used to analyze models in the absence of a moment dual, one of them is based on Bernstein duality and another one on Siegmund duality. As a rule of thumb, the first approach seems to work well whenever the ancestral processes are positive recurrent; the second one, in contrast, works well in situations where the ancestral structures can grow to infinity (in size). The second approach was recently used to provide a full characterization of the long-term behavior of a broad class of $\Lambda$-Wright--Fisher processes subject to frequency-dependent selection and opposing environments. In this paper, we use the first approach to complete the picture, i.e. we describe the long-term behavior of a different class of $\Lambda$-Wright--Fisher processes, which covers many of the cases that were not covered by the aforementioned result (the two classes intersect, but none is a proper subset of the other one). Moreover, we extend the notion of Bernstein duality to cases with (single and coordinated) mutations {and environmental selection}, and we use it to show ergodic properties of the process., Comment: 23 pages

Abstract: Gravitational lensing is the deflection of light rays due to the gravity of intervening masses. This phenomenon is observed in a variety of scales and configurations, involving any non-uniform mass such as planets, stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, and even the large scale structure of the universe. Strong lensing occurs when the distortions are significant and multiple images of the background source are observed. The lens objects must align on the sky of order ~1 arcsecond for galaxy-galaxy lensing, or 10's of arcseonds for cluster-galaxy lensing. As the discovery of lens systems has grown to the low thousands, these systems have become pivotal for precision measurements and addressing critical questions in astrophysics. Notably, they facilitate the measurement of the Universe's expansion rate, dark matter, supernovae, quasars, and the first stars among other topics. With future surveys expected to discover hundreds of thousands of lensing systems, the modelling and simulation of such systems must occur at orders of magnitude larger scale then ever before. 39. Proximal Interacting Particle Langevin Algorithms

Abstract: We introduce a class of algorithms, termed Proximal Interacting Particle Langevin Algorithms (PIPLA), for inference and learning in latent variable models whose joint probability density is non-differentiable. Leveraging proximal Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques and the recently introduced interacting particle Langevin algorithm (IPLA), we propose several variants within the novel proximal IPLA family, tailored to the problem of estimating parameters in a non-differentiable statistical model. We prove nonasymptotic bounds for the parameter estimates produced by multiple algorithms in the strongly log-concave setting and provide comprehensive numerical experiments on various models to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. In particular, we demonstrate the utility of the proposed family of algorithms on a toy hierarchical example where our assumptions can be checked, as well as on the problems of sparse Bayesian logistic regression, sparse Bayesian neural network, and sparse matrix completion. Abstract: We present the joint tomographic analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering in harmonic space, using galaxy catalogues from the first three years of observations by the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3). We utilise the redMaGiC and MagLim catalogues as lens galaxies and the METACALIBRATION catalogue as source galaxies. The measurements of angular power spectra are performed using the pseudo-$C_\ell$ method, and our theoretical modelling follows the fiducial analyses performed by DES Y3 in configuration space, accounting for galaxy bias, intrinsic alignments, magnification bias, shear magnification bias and photometric redshift uncertainties. We explore different approaches for scale cuts based on non-linear galaxy bias and baryonic effects contamination. Our fiducial covariance matrix is computed analytically, accounting for mask geometry in the Gaussian term, and including non-Gaussian contributions and super-sample covariance terms. To validate our harmonic space pipelines and covariance matrix, we used a suite of 1800 log-normal simulations. We also perform a series of stress tests to gauge the robustness of our harmonic space analysis. In the $\Lambda$CDM model, the clustering amplitude $S_8 =\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ is constrained to $S_8 = 0.704\pm 0.029$ and $S_8 = 0.753\pm 0.024$ ($68\%$ C.L.) for the redMaGiC and MagLim catalogues, respectively. For the $w$CDM, the dark energy equation of state is constrained to $w = -1.28 \pm 0.29$ and $w = -1.26^{+0.34}_{-0.27}$, for redMaGiC and MagLim catalogues, respectively. Abstract: In this work we introduce the dynamic $\Lambda$-random graph and the associated multiplicative $\Lambda$-coalescent. The dynamic $\Lambda$-random graph is an exchangeable and consistent random graph process, inspired by the classical $\Lambda$-coalescent studied in mathematical population genetics. Our main concern is the multiplicative $\Lambda$-coalescent, which accounts for the connected components (blocks) of the graph. This process is exchangeable but not consistent. We focus on the case where $\Lambda$ is the beta measure and prove a dynamic law of large numbers for the block size spectrum, which tracks the numbers of blocks containing $1,...,d$ elements. On top of that, we provide a functional limit theorem for the fluctuations around its deterministic trajectory. 42. Locally Phase-Engineered MoTe$_2$ for Near-Infrared Photodetectors

Abstract: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are ideal systems for two-dimensional (2D) optoelectronic applications, owing to their strong light-matter interaction and various band gap energies. New techniques to modify the crystallographic phase of TMDs have recently been discovered, allowing the creation of lateral heterostructures and the design of all-2D circuitry. Thus far, the potential benefits of phase-engineered TMD devices for optoelectronic applications are still largely unexplored. The dominant mechanisms involved in the photocurrent generation in these systems remain unclear, hindering further development of new all-2D optoelectronic devices. Here, we fabricate locally phase-engineered MoTe$_{2}$ optoelectronic devices, creating a metal (1T') semiconductor (2H) lateral junction and unveil the main mechanisms at play for photocurrent generation. We find that the photocurrent originates from the 1T'-2H junction, with a maximum at the 2H MoTe$_{2}$ side of the junction. This observation, together with the non-linear IV-curve, indicates that the photovoltaic effect plays a major role on the photon-to-charge current conversion in these systems. Additionally, the 1T'-2H MoTe$_{2}$ heterojunction device exhibits a fast optoelectronic response over a wavelength range of 700 nm to 1100 nm, with a rise and fall times of 113 $\mu$s and 110 $\mu$s, two orders of magnitude faster when compared to a directly contacted 2H MoTe$_{2}$ device. These results show the potential of local phase-engineering for all-2D optoelectronic circuitry.

43. Understanding of linear operators through Wigner analysis

Abstract: In this work, we extend Wigner's original framework to analyze linear operators by examining the relationship between their Wigner and Schwartz kernels. Our approach includes the introduction of (quasi-)algebras of Fourier integral operators (FIOs), which encompass FIOs of type I and II. The symbols of these operators reside in (weighted) modulation spaces, particularly in Sj\"ostrand's class, known for its favorable properties in time-frequency analysis. One of the significant results of our study is demonstrating the inverse-closedness of these symbol classes. Our analysis includes fundamental examples such as pseudodifferential operators and Fourier integral operators related to Schr{\"o}dinger-type equations. These examples typically feature classical Hamiltonian flows governed by linear symplectic transformations $S \in Sp(d, \mathbb{R})$. The core idea of our approach is to utilize the Wigner kernel to transform a Fourier integral operator $ T $ on $ \mathbb{R}^d $ into a pseudodifferential operator $ K$ on $ \mathbb{R}^{2d}$. 44. A Variable Neighborhood Search approach for solving the Rank Pricing Problem

Abstract: The Rank Pricing Problem (RPP) is a challenging bilevel optimization problem with binary variables whose objective is to determine the optimal pricing strategy for a set of products to maximize the total benefit, given that customer preferences influence the price for each product. Traditional methods for solving RPP are based on exact approaches which may be computationally expensive. In contrast, this paper presents a novel approach utilizing Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS), a popular heuristic known for its effectiveness in solving combinatorial optimization problems. Our proposed VNS algorithm introduces problem-specific neighborhood operators designed to effectively explore the solution space of the RPP. Even though our methodology does not have optimality guarantees, our computational experiments show that it outperforms Mixed Integer Program solvers regarding solution quality and computational burden.

45. Freestanding perovskite and infinite-layer nickelate membranes

Abstract: Following the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped NdNiO$_2$ infinite-layer thin films, extensive research has been conducted particularly to compare these materials with cuprates. Superconductivity has also been observed in nickelate thin films with other rare-earth elements like Pr and La, but not in their bulk forms, suggesting a critical role for substrate-induced strain/interface or dimensionality effects. In this study, we use water-soluble (Ca,Sr)$_3$Al$_2$O$_6$ sacrificial layers to fabricate freestanding perovskite nickelate membranes and explore topotactic reduction without the SrTiO$_3$ substrate as a template. NdNiO$_3$-based heterostructure membranes transferred from a LaAlO$_3$ substrate exhibit better metallic behavior and higher hysteresis than those transferred from SrTiO$_3$, owing to the different strain states that the NdNiO$_3$ layer experience when grown on these two substrates. Despite the expected X-ray diffraction shifts, membranes reduced with CaH$_2$ display insulating characteristics, similar to bulk infinite-layer nickelates. Our findings strongly indicate that a template is necessary to stabilize a coherent and robust infinite-layer phase with optimal transport properties.

Abstract: The principle of maximum entropy is used to study the geometric properties of an ensemble of finite dimensional Hamiltonian systems with known average energy. These geometric characterization is given in terms of the generalized diagonal Bloch vectors and the invariants of the special unitary group in $n$ dimensions. As examples, Hamiltonians written in terms of linear and quadratic generators of the angular momentum algebra are considered with $J= 1$ and $J=3/2$. For these cases, paths as functions of the temperature are established in the corresponding simplex representations, as well as the adiabatic evolution of the interaction strengths of the Hamiltonian models. Abstract: Polariton condensation relies on the macroscopic occupation of the lowest-energy polariton state beyond a critical density. The mechanisms driving the occupation and depopulation of this state all rely on multi-particle scattering, whose dynamics determine the extent to which condensates can form spontaneously. To pinpoint many-body processes hindering polariton condensation in two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductors, we examine the exciton-polariton dynamics in a Fabry-P\'erot microcavity over timescales involving polariton ($\bm{\ll 1}$\,ps) and exciton scattering ($\bm{\gg 1}$\,ps). We find enhanced nonlinear exciton-exciton interactions in the microcavity versus the bare semiconductor and ultrafast polariton scattering depopulating the lowest-energy polariton state. We posit that the complex scattering landscape between the exciton reservoir and polaritons limits the formation of polariton condensates in these semiconductors, and we discuss the generality of our conclusions for highly polar materials in which the lattice mediates multi-particle correlations., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, plus supplementary material document. Abstract: We exhibit the connection between the Wigner kernel and the Gabor matrix of a linear bounded operator T : $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d) \to \mathcal{S}' (\mathbb{R}^d)$. The smoothing effect of the Gabor matrix is highlighted by basic examples. This connection allows a comparison between the classes of Fourier integral operators defined by means of the Gabor matrix and the Wigner kernel, showing the nice off-diagonal decay of the Gabor class with respect to the Wigner kernel one and suggesting further investigations. Modulation spaces containing the Sj\"ostrand class are the symbol classes of this study.

Abstract: Extracting precise cosmology from weak lensing surveys requires modelling the non-linear matter power spectrum, which is suppressed at small scales due to baryonic feedback processes. However, hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations make widely varying predictions for the amplitude and extent of this effect. We use measurements of Dark Energy Survey Year 3 weak lensing (WL) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope DR5 kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) to jointly constrain cosmological and astrophysical baryonic feedback parameters using a flexible analytical model, `baryonification'. First, using WL only, we compare the $S_8$ constraints using baryonification to a simulation-calibrated halo model, a simulation-based emulator model and the approach of discarding WL measurements on small angular scales. We find that model flexibility can shift the value of $S_8$ and degrade the uncertainty. The kSZ provides additional constraints on the astrophysical parameters and shifts $S_8$ to $S_8=0.823^{+0.019}_{-0.020}$, a higher value than attained using the WL-only analysis. We measure the suppression of the non-linear matter power spectrum using WL + kSZ and constrain a mean feedback scenario that is more extreme than the predictions from most hydrodynamical simulations. We constrain the baryon fractions and the gas mass fractions and find them to be generally lower than inferred from X-ray observations and simulation predictions. We conclude that the WL + kSZ measurements provide a new and complementary benchmark for building a coherent picture of the impact of gas around galaxies across observations.

Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. The discovery of this system implies an increase in the expected rate of neutron star-black hole mergers with electromagnetic counterparts and provides further evidence for compact objects existing within the purported lower mass gap., Comment: 45 pages (10 pages author list, 13 pages main text, 1 page acknowledgements, 13 pages appendices, 8 pages bibliography), 17 figures, 16 tables.
