The Beam Expander Testing X-ray facility (BEaTriX) is a unique X-ray apparatus now operated at the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera (OAB), in Merate, Italy. It has been specifically designed to measure the point spread function (PSF) and the effective area (EA) of the X-ray mirror modules (MMs) of the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA), based on silicon pore optics (SPO) technology, for verification before integration into the mirror assembly. To this end, BEaTriX generates a broad, uniform, monochromatic, and collimated X-ray beam at 4.51 keV. [...] In BEaTriX, a micro-focus X-ray source with a titanium anode is placed in the focus of a paraboloidal mirror, which generates a parallel beam. A crystal monochromator selects the 4.51 keV line, which is expanded to the final size by a crystal asymmetrically cut with respect to the crystalline planes. [...] After characterization, the BEaTriX beam has the nominal dimensions of 170 mm x 60 mm, with a vertical divergence of 1.65 arcsec and a horizontal divergence varying between 2.7 and 3.45 arcsec, depending on the monochromator setting: either high collimation or high intensity. The flux per area unit varies from 10 to 50 photons/s/cm2 from one configuration to the other. The BEaTriX beam performance was tested using an SPO MM, whose entrance pupil was fully illuminated by the expanded beam, and its focus was directly imaged onto the camera. The first light test returned a PSF and an EA in full agreement with expectations. As of today, the 4.51 keV beamline of BEaTriX is operational and can characterize modular X-ray optics, measuring their PSF and EA with a typical exposure of 30 minutes. Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) uses commercially available monocrystalline double-sided super-polished silicon wafers as a basis to produce mirrors that form lightweight high-resolution X-ray optics. The technology has been invented by cosine Measurement Systems and the European Space Agency (ESA) and developed together with scientific and industrial partners to mass production levels. It leverages techniques and processes developed over decades by the semiconductor industry to handle, process, and clean silicon wafers and plates. SPO is an enabling technology for large space-borne X-ray telescopes such as Athena and ARCUS, operating in the 0.2 to 12 keV band, with angular resolution aiming for 5 arc seconds. Isotopic studies of meteorites have provided ample evidence for the presence of short-lived radionuclides (SLRs) with half-lives of less than 100 Myr at the time of the formation of the solar system. The origins of all known SLRs is heavily debated and remains uncertain, but the plausible scenarios can be broadly separated into either local production or outside injection of stellar nucleosynthesis products. The SLR production models are limited in part by reliance on nuclear theory for modeling reactions that lack experimental measurements. Reducing uncertainty on critical reaction cross sections can both enable more precise predictions and provide constraints on physical processes and environments in the early solar system. This goal led to the start of a campaign for measuring production cross sections for the SLR $^{36}$Cl, where Bowers et al. found higher cross sections for the ${}^{33}$S($\alpha$,p)$^{36}$Cl reaction than were predicted by Hauser-Feshbach based nuclear reaction codes TALYS and NON-SMOKER. This prompted re-measurement of the reaction at five new energies within the energy range originally studied, resulting in data slightly above but in agreement with TALYS. Following this, efforts began to measure cross sections for the next most significant reaction for $^{36}$Cl production, $^{34}$S($^{3}$He,p)$^{36}$Cl. Activations were performed to produce 9 samples between 1.11 MeV/nucleon and 2.36 MeV/nucleon. These samples were subsequently measured with accelerator mass spectrometry at two labs. The resulting data suggest a sharper-than-expected rise in cross sections with energy, with peak cross sections up to 30\% higher than predictions from TALYS.

The majority of the ordinary matter in the local Universe has been heated by strong structure formation shocks and resides in a largely unexplored hot, diffuse, X-ray emitting plasma that permeates the halos of galaxies, galaxy groups and clusters, and the cosmic web. We propose a next-generation "Cosmic Web Explorer" that will permit a complete and exhaustive understanding of these unseen baryons. This will be the first mission capable to reach the accretion shocks located several times farther than the virial radii of galaxy clusters, and reveal the out-of-equilibrium parts of the intra-cluster medium which are live witnesses to the physics of cosmic accretion. It will also enable a view of the thermodynamics, kinematics, and chemical composition of the circumgalactic medium in galaxies with masses similar to the Milky Way, at the same level of detail that $Athena$ will unravel for the virialized regions of massive galaxy clusters, delivering a transformative understanding of the evolution of those galaxies in which most of the stars and metals in the Universe were formed. Finally, the proposed X-ray satellite will connect the dots of the large-scale structure by mapping, at high spectral resolution, as much as 100% of the diffuse gas hotter than $10^6$ K that fills the filaments of the cosmic web at low redshifts, down to an over-density of 1, both in emission and in absorption against the ubiquitous cosmic X-ray background, surveying at least 1600 square degrees over 5 years in orbit. This requires a large effective area (~10 m$^2$ at 1 keV) over a large field of view ($\sim1$ deg$^2$), a megapixel cryogenic microcalorimeter array providing integral field spectroscopy with a resolving power $E/\Delta E$ = 2000 at 0.6 keV and a spatial resolution of 5 arcsec in the soft X-ray band, and a low and stable instrumental background ensuring high sensitivity to faint, extended emission., Comment: White paper submitted in response to ESA's Voyage 2050 Call. In response to the growing need for low-radioactivity argon, community experts and interested parties came together for a 2-day workshop to discuss the worldwide low-radioactivity argon needs and the challenges associated with its production and characterization. Several topics were covered: experimental needs and requirements for low-radioactivity argon, the sources of low-radioactivity argon and its production, how long-lived argon radionuclides are created in nature, measuring argon radionuclides, and other applicable topics. The Low-Radioactivity Underground Argon (LRUA) workshop took place on March 19-20, 2018 at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland Washington, USA. In this paper we present a risk-averse model predictive control (MPC) scheme for the operation of islanded microgrids with very high share of renewable energy sources. The proposed scheme mitigates the effect of errors in the determination of the probability distribution of renewable infeed and load. This allows to use less complex and less accurate forecasting methods and to formulate low-dimensional scenario-based optimisation problems which are suitable for control applications. Additionally, the designer may trade performance for safety by interpolating between the conventional stochastic and worst-case MPC formulations. The presented risk-averse MPC problem is formulated as a mixed-integer quadratically-constrained quadratic problem and its favourable characteristics are demonstrated in a case study. This includes a sensitivity analysis that illustrates the robustness to load and renewable power prediction errors.

The $^{36}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{37}$Ar ($t_{1/2}$ = 35 d) and $^{38}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{39}$Ar (269 y) reactions were studied for the first time with a quasi-Maxwellian ($kT \sim 47$ keV) neutron flux for Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS) measurements at stellar energies. Gas samples were irradiated at the high-intensity Soreq applied research accelerator facility-liquid-lithium target neutron source and the $^{37}$Ar/$^{36}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar/$^{38}$Ar ratios in the activated samples were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility (Argonne National Laboratory). The $^{37}$Ar activity was also measured by low-level counting at the University of Bern. Experimental MACS of $^{36}$Ar and $^{38}$Ar, corrected to the standard 30 keV thermal energy, are 1.9(3) mb and 1.3(2) mb, respectively, differing from the theoretical and evaluated values published to date by up to an order of magnitude. The neutron capture cross sections of $^{36,38}$Ar are relevant to the stellar nucleosynthesis of light neutron-rich nuclides; the two experimental values are shown to affect the calculated mass fraction of nuclides in the region A=36-48 during the weak $s$-process. The new production cross sections have implications also for the use of $^{37}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar as environmental tracers in the atmosphere and hydrosphere., Comment: 18 pages + Supp. Mat. Short-lived radionuclides (SLRs) with half-lives less than 100 Myr are known to have existed around the time of the formation of the solar system around 4.5 billion years ago. Understanding the production sources for SLRs is important for improving our understanding of processes taking place just after solar system formation as well as their timescales. Early solar system models rely heavily on calculations from nuclear theory due to a lack of experimental data for the nuclear reactions taking place. In 2013, Bowers et al. measured ${}^{36}$Cl production cross sections via the ${}^{33}$S($\alpha$,p) reaction and reported cross sections that were systematically higher than predicted by Hauser-Feshbach codes. Soon after, a paper by Peter Mohr highlighted the challenges the new data would pose to current nuclear theory if verified. The ${}^{33}$S($\alpha$,p)${}^{36}$Cl reaction was re-measured at 5 energies between 0.78 MeV/A and 1.52 MeV/A, in the same range as measured by Bowers et al., and found systematically lower cross sections than originally reported, with the new results in good agreement with the Hauser-Feshbach code TALYS. Loss of Cl carrier in chemical extraction and errors in determination of reaction energy ranges are both possible explanations for artificially inflated cross sections measured in the previous work.

We have measured the ionization efficiency of silicon nuclear recoils with kinetic energy between 1.8 and 20 keV. We bombarded a silicon-drift diode with a neutron beam to perform an elastic-scattering experiment. A broad-energy neutron spectrum was used and the nuclear recoil energy was reconstructed using a measurement of the time of flight and scattering angle of the scattered neutron. The overall trend of the results of this work is well described by the theory of Lindhard et al. above 4 keV of recoil energy. Below this energy, the presented data shows a deviation from the model. The data indicates a faster drop than the theory prediction at low energies.

The half-life of the neutron-rich nuclide, {\fesixty} has been in dispute in recent years. A measurement in 2009 published a value of $(2.62 \pm 0.04)\times10^{6}$ years, almost twice that of the previously accepted value from 1984 of $(1.49 \pm 0.27)\times10^{6}$ years. This longer half-life was confirmed in 2015 by a second measurement, resulting in a value of $(2.50 \pm 0.12)\times10^{6}$ years. All three half-life measurements used the grow-in of the $\gamma$-ray lines in {\nisixty} from the decay of the ground state of $^{60}\text{Co}$ (t$_{1/2}$=5.27 years) to determine the activity of a sample with a known number of {\fesixty} atoms. In contrast, the work presented here measured the {\fesixty} activity directly via the 58.6 keV $\gamma$-ray line from the short-lived isomeric state of $^{60}\text{Co}$ (t$_{1/2}$=10.5 minutes), thus being independent of any possible contamination from long-lived $^{60\text{g}}\text{Co}$. A fraction of the material from the 2015 experiment with a known number of {\fesixty} atoms was used for the activity measurement, resulting in a half-life value of $(2.72 \pm 0.16)\times10^{6}$ years, confirming again the longer half-life. In addition, {\fesixty}/{\fe} isotopic ratios of samples with two different dilutions of this material were measured with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) to determine the number of {\fesixty} atoms. Combining this with our activity measurement resulted in a half-life value of $(2.69 \pm 0.28)\times 10^{6}$ years, again agreeing with the longer half-life., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, version submitted to PRC March 2017

Equilibrium charge state distributions of stable 60Ni, 59Co, and 63Cu beams passing through a 1um thick Mo foil were measured at beam energies of 1.84 MeV/u, 2.09 MeV/u, and 2.11 MeV/u respectively. A 1-D position sensitive Parallel Grid Avalanche Counter detector (PGAC) was used at the exit of a spectrograph magnet, enabling us to measure the intensity of several charge states simultaneously. The number of charge states measured for each beam constituted more than 99% of the total equilibrium charge state distribution for that elements. Currently, little experimental data exists for equilibrium charge state distributions for heavy ions with 19

Short-lived radionuclides (SLRs) with lifetimes \tau < 100 Ma are known to have been extant when the Solar System formed over 4.5 billion years ago. Identifying the sources of SLRs is important for understanding the timescales of Solar System formation and processes that occurred early in its history. Extinct 36Cl (t_1/2 = 0.301 Ma) is thought to have been produced by interaction of solar energetic particles (SEPs), emitted by the young Sun, with gas and dust in the nascent Solar System. However, models that calculate SLR production in the early Solar System (ESS) lack experimental data for the 36Cl production reactions. We present here the first measurement of the cross section of one of the main 36Cl production reactions, 33S(\alpha,p)36Cl, in the energy range 0.70 - 2.42 MeV/A. The cross section measurement was performed by bombarding a target and collecting the recoiled 36Cl atoms produced in the reaction, chemically processing the samples, and measuring the 36Cl/Cl ratio of the activated samples with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The experimental results were found to be systematically higher than the cross sections used in previous local irradiation models and other Hauser-Feshbach calculated predictions. However, the effects of the experimentally measured cross sections on the modeled production of 36Cl in the early Solar System were found to be minimal. Reactions channels involving S targets dominate 36Cl production, but the astrophysical event parameters can dramatically change each reactions' relative contribution., Comment: 10 pages

Symmetries of nonlinear control systems in state representation are considered. To this end, a geometric approach to ordinary differential equations is advocated. Invariant feedback laws for systems with Lie symmetries, i.e. feedback laws that preserve the symmetry group of a considered plant, can be constructed based on invariants of the considered group action. Under minor technical assumptions suitable invariant tracking errors can be determined by following a normalization procedure. The underlying local geometric meaning of this procedure is discussed and it is shown how it can also be applied in order to derive a local, reduced-order system representation. Further, the idea of controlled symmetries, i.e. imposing desired symmetry properties on a given control system by state feedback, is discussed by outlining an exemplary control design for a predator-prey bioreactor.

The design of an invariant tracking control law for the kinematic car driving on a sphere is discussed. Using a Lie group framework a left-invariant description on SO(3) is derived. Basic geometric considerations allow a direct comparison of the model with the usual planar case. Exploiting the Lie group structure an invariant tracking error is defined and a feedback is designed. Finally, one possible design of an invariant asymptotic observer is sketched.

The extinct p-process nuclide 146Sm serves as an astrophysical and geochemical chronometer through measurements of isotopic anomalies of its alpha-decay daughter 142Nd. Based on analyses of 146Sm/147Sm alpha-activity and atom ratios, we determined the half-life of 146Sm to be 68 \pm 7 (1sigma) million years (Ma), which is shorter than the currently used value of 103 \pm 5 Ma. This half-life value implies a higher initial 146Sm abundance in the early solar system, (146Sm/144Sm_0 = 0.0094\pm0.0005 (2sigma), than previously estimated. Terrestrial, Lunar and Martian planetary silicate mantle differentiation events dated with 146Sm-142Nd converge to a shorter time span and in general to earlier times, due to the combined effect of the new 146Sm half-life and (146Sm/144Sm)_0 values., Comment: 48 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. The excitation function for the fusion-evaporation reaction 64Ni+100Mo has been measured down to a cross-section of ~5 nb. Extensive coupled-channels calculations have been performed, which cannot reproduce the steep fall-off of the excitation function at extreme sub-barrier energies. Thus, this system exhibits a hindrance for fusion, a phenomenon that has been discovered only recently. In the S-factor representation introduced to quantify the hindrance, a maximum is observed at E_s=120.6 MeV, which corresponds to 90% of the reference energy E_s^ref, a value expected from systematics of closed-shell systems. A systematic analysis of Ni-induced fusion reactions leading to compound nuclei with mass A=100-200 is presented in order to explore a possible dependence of the fusion hindrance on nuclear structure., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Phys. The 62Ni(n,gamma)63Ni(t_1/2=100+-2 yrs) reaction plays an important role in the control of the flow path of the slow neutron-capture (s-) nucleosynthesis process. We have measured for the first time the total cross section of this reaction for a quasi-Maxwellian (kT = 25 keV) neutron flux. The measurement was performed by fast-neutron activation, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry to detect directly the 63Ni product nuclei. The experimental value of 28.4+-2.8 mb, fairly consistent with a recent theoretical estimate, affects the calculated net yield of 62Ni itself and the whole distribution of nuclei with 62

Fusion-evaporation cross sections for $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni have been measured down to the 10 nb level. For fusion between two open-shell nuclei, this is the first observation of a maximum in the $S$-factor, which signals a strong sub-barrier hindrance. A comparison with the $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni, $^{58}$Ni+$^{60}$Ni, and $^{58}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni systems indicates a strong dependence of the energy where the hindrance occurs on the stiffness of the interacting nuclei., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Trace analysis of radionuclides is an essential and versatile tool in modern science and technology. Due to their ideal geophysical and geochemical properties, long-lived noble gas radionuclides, in particular, 39Ar (t1/2 = 269 yr), 81Kr (t1/2 = 2.3x10^5 yr) and 85Kr (t1/2 = 10.8 yr), have long been recognized to have a wide range of important applications in Earth sciences. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of practical analytical methods, and has led to applications of these isotopes in the hydrosphere (tracing the flow of groundwater and ocean water). In this article, we introduce the applications of these isotopes and review three leading analytical methods: Low-Level Counting (LLC), Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA).
