1. Investigating synergies between chemical reaction networks (CRN) and mathematical epidemiology (ME), using the Mathematica package Epid-CRN

Abstract

In this essay, we investigate some relations between Chemical Reaction Networks (CRN) and Mathematical Epidemiology (ME) and report on several pleasant surprises which we had simply by putting these two topics together. Firstly, we propose a definition of ME models as a subset of CRN models. Secondly, we review a fundamental stability result for boundary points, known in ME as the NGM method since it replaces the investigation of the Jacobian by that of a matrix whose origins lie in probability (the theory of branching processes). This important result seems to be little known outside of ME; even in ME, it has not been made clear before that the method gets sometimes the right answer, even though the conditions of the NGM theorem are not all satisfied. Thus, beyond the theorem, there is a heuristic approach, the validity conditions for which are not sufficiently understood. Thirdly, we show that some simple CRN models with absolute concentration robustness (ACR), are close qualitatively to simple ME models, in the sense that they have an unique disease free equilibrium, and a unique interior fixed point, and the latter enters the positive domain and becomes stable precisely when $R_0:=s_{dfe} \mathcal{R}=\frac{s_{dfe}}{s_e}>1.$ (where $s$ denotes the "ACR species"). Thus, for these "ME type models", a "relay phenomena" takes place: precisely when the DFE loses stability, a new fixed point enters the domain, and takes over. Last but not least, we offer in the associated GitHub repository https://github.com/adhalanay/epidemiology_crns a Mathematica package, Epid-CRN, which is addressed to researchers of both disciplines, and provide illustrative notebooks, which in particular solve a few minor open ME and CRN problems. Our package may also be used to study easy cases of analogue continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) ME and CRN models.

2. Advancing Mathematical Epidemiology and Chemical Reaction Network Theory via Synergies Between Them

Abstract

Our paper reviews some key concepts in chemical reaction network theory and mathematical epidemiology, and examines their intersection, with three goals. The first is to make the case that mathematical epidemiology (ME), and also related sciences like population dynamics, virology, ecology, etc., could benefit by adopting the universal language of essentially non-negative kinetic systems as developed by chemical reaction network (CRN) researchers. In this direction, our investigation of the relations between CRN and ME lead us to propose for the first time a definition of ME models, stated in Open Problem 1. Our second goal is to inform researchers outside ME of the convenient next generation matrix (NGM) approach for studying the stability of boundary points, which do not seem suficiently well known. Last but not least, we want to help students and researchers who know nothing about either ME or CRN to learn them quickly, by offering them a Mathematica package "BootCamp", located at https://github.com/adhalanay/epidemiology_crns, including illustrating notebooks (and certain sections below will contain associated suggested notebooks; however, readers with experience may safely skip the bootcamp). We hope that the files indicated in the titles of various sections will be helpful, though of course improvement is always possible, and we ask the help of the readers for that.

3. RELATE: A Modern Processing Platform for Romanian Language

Abstract

This paper presents the design and evolution of the RELATE platform. It provides a high-performance environment for natural language processing activities, specially constructed for Romanian language. Initially developed for text processing, it has been recently updated to integrate audio processing tools. Technical details are provided with regard to core components. We further present different usage scenarios, derived from actual use in national and international research projects, thus demonstrating that RELATE is a mature, modern, state-of-the-art platform for processing Romanian language corpora. Finally, we present very recent developments including bimodal (text and audio) features available within the platform.

4. RoQLlama: A Lightweight Romanian Adapted Language Model

Abstract

The remarkable achievements obtained by open-source large language models (LLMs) in recent years have predominantly been concentrated on tasks involving the English language. In this paper, we aim to advance the performance of Llama2 models on Romanian tasks. We tackle the problem of reduced computing resources by using QLoRA for training. We release RoQLlama-7b, a quantized LLM, which shows equal or improved results compared to its full-sized counterpart when tested on seven Romanian downstream tasks in the zero-shot setup. Also, it consistently achieves higher average scores across all few-shot prompts. Abstract

This essay reviews some key concepts in mathematical epidemiology and examines the intersection of this field with related scientific disciplines, such as chemical reaction network theory and Lagrange-Hamilton geometry. 6. Do Cure Violence Programs Reduce Gun Violence? Evidence from New York City

Abstract

Cure Violence is a community violence intervention program that aims to reduce gun violence by mediating conflicts, "treating" high-risk individuals, and changing community norms. Using NYC shootings data from 2006-2023, we assess the efficacy of Cure Violence using both difference-in-differences and event study models. We find that, on average, Cure Violence is associated with a 14% reduction in shootings relative to the counterfactual. This association persists in the years after treatment, neither increasing nor decreasing much over time. We exploit variation in the geography and timing of Cure implementation to argue against alternative explanations. Additionally, we find suggestive evidence of spillover effects into nearby precincts, as well as increasing returns to opening new Cure programs. Interpreted causally, our results imply that around 1,300 shootings were avoided between 2012-2023 due to Cure -- generating a net social surplus of $2.45 billion and achieving a benefit-cost ratio of 6.5:1.

7. Finding bifurcations in mathematical epidemiology via reaction network methods

Abstract

Mathematical Epidemiology (ME) shares with Chemical Reaction Network Theory (CRNT) the basic mathematical structure of its dynamical systems. Despite this central similarity, methods from CRNT have been seldom applied to solving problems in ME. We explore here the applicability of CRNT methods to find bifurcations at endemic equilibria of ME models. We adapt three CRNT methods to the features of ME. First, we prove that essentially all ME models admit Hopf bifurcations for certain monotone choices of the interaction functions. Second, we offer a parametrization of equilibria Jacobians of ME systems where few interactions are not in mass action form. Third, for a quite general class of models, we show that periodic oscillations in closed systems imply periodic oscillations when demography is added. Finally, we apply such results to two families of networks: a general SIR model with a nonlinear force of infection and treatment rate and a recent SIRnS model with a gradual increase in infectiousness. 8. HistNERo: Historical Named Entity Recognition for the Romanian Language

Abstract

This work introduces HistNERo, the first Romanian corpus for Named Entity Recognition (NER) in historical newspapers. The dataset contains 323k tokens of text, covering more than half of the 19th century (i.e., 1817) until the late part of the 20th century (i.e., 1990). Eight native Romanian speakers annotated the dataset with five named entities. The samples belong to one of the following four historical regions of Romania, namely Bessarabia, Moldavia, Transylvania, and Wallachia. We employed this proposed dataset to perform several experiments for NER using Romanian pre-trained language models. Our results show that the best model achieved a strict F1-score of 55.69%. Also, by reducing the discrepancies between regions through a novel domain adaption technique, we improved the performance on this corpus to a strict F1-score of 66.80%, representing an absolute gain of more than 10%., Comment: Accepted at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR 2024)

15. Analogue of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality for determinants: a simple proof

Abstract

In this note, we present a simple proof of an analogue of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality relevant to products of determinants. Specifically, we show that $$ |\det(A^*MB)|^2\leq \det(A^*MA)\cdot \det(B^*MB),\quad A,B\in \mathbb{C}^{m\times n},$$ where $M\in\mathbb{C}^{m\times m}$ is hermitian positive definite. Abstract

This letter introduces LYT-Net, a novel lightweight transformer-based model for low-light image enhancement (LLIE). LYT-Net consists of several layers and detachable blocks, including our novel blocks--Channel-Wise Denoiser (CWD) and Multi-Stage Squeeze & Excite Fusion (MSEF)--along with the traditional Transformer block, Multi-Headed Self-Attention (MHSA). In our method we adopt a dual-path approach, treating chrominance channels U and V and luminance channel Y as separate entities to help the model better handle illumination adjustment and corruption restoration. Our comprehensive evaluation on established LLIE datasets demonstrates that, despite its low complexity, our model outperforms recent LLIE methods. Abstract

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinsons disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals. Random forest models identified age, years of education, and site as important VLM covariates. A Bayesian harmonization approach was used to isolate and remove site effects. Regression estimated the adjusted association of each clinical group with VLM scores. Memory deficits were strongly associated with dementia and schizophrenia (p < 0.001), while neither depression nor ADHD showed consistent associations with VLM scores (p > 0.05). Differences associated with clinical conditions were larger for longer delayed recall duration items. By comparing VLM across clinical conditions, this study provides a foundation for enhanced diagnostic precision and offers new insights into disease management of comorbid disorders.

18. Evaluation of stenoses using AI video models applied to coronary angiography.

Abstract

The coronary angiogram is the gold standard for evaluating the severity of coronary artery disease stenoses. Presently, the assessment is conducted visually by cardiologists, a method that lacks standardization. This study introduces DeepCoro, a ground-breaking AI-driven pipeline that integrates advanced vessel tracking and a video-based Swin3D model that was trained and validated on a dataset comprised of 182,418 coronary angiography videos spanning 5 years. DeepCoro achieved a notable precision of 71.89% in identifying coronary artery segments and demonstrated a mean absolute error of 20.15% (95% CI: 19.88-20.40) and a classification AUROC of 0.8294 (95% CI: 0.8215-0.8373) in stenosis percentage prediction compared to traditional cardiologist assessments. When compared to two expert interventional cardiologists, DeepCoro achieved lower variability than the clinical reports (19.09%; 95% CI: 18.55-19.58 vs 21.00%; 95% CI: 20.20-21.76, respectively). In addition, DeepCoro can be fine-tuned to a different modality type. When fine-tuned on quantitative coronary angiography assessments, DeepCoro attained an even lower mean absolute error of 7.75% (95% CI: 7.37-8.07), underscoring the reduced variability inherent to this method. This study establishes DeepCoro as an innovative video-based, adaptable tool in coronary artery disease analysis, significantly enhancing the precision and reliability of stenosis assessment.

19. Written Language: A Promising Gateway to Anxiety Disorders Assessment

Abstract

Currently, self-report measures are the primary assessment tool for anxiety disorders. Since they have some limitations, alternative measurements, such as language-based measures, are worth investigating. This paper explores which language markers signal anxiety in fictitious stories written in response to four Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) cards. Participants (n = 492) from a non-probabilistic convenience sample were asked to write a short story next to each TAT card after completing the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7. We used RoLIWC2015 to conduct the text analysis and applied the LASSO method to identify which language markers predict anxiety. The results showed that the respondents scoring high on anxiety also tend to use more words expressing negative emotions, and fewer words expressing positive emotions. Moreover, their language contained a higher frequency of words that implied semantic differentiation (i.e., but, else) and a lower frequency of words indicating leisure. In conclusion, this paper aims to shed new light on the multimethod assessment of anxiety, mainly focused on specific language signatures as reliable predictors of anxiety symptoms. Further research using more extensive text data is recommended to discover more linguistic markers and improve prediction accuracy.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Qubits based on ions trapped in linear radio-frequency traps form a successful platform for quantum computing, due to their high fidelity of operations, all-to-all connectivity and degree of local control. In principle there is no fundamental limit to the number of ion-based qubits that can be confined in a single 1D register. However, in practice there are two main issues associated with long trapped-ion crystals, that stem from the 'softening' of their modes of motion, upon scaling up: high heating rates of the ions' motion, and a dense motional spectrum; both impede the performance of high-fidelity qubit operations. Here we propose a holistic, scalable architecture for quantum computing with large ion-crystals that overcomes these issues. Our method relies on dynamically-operated optical potentials, that instantaneously segment the ion-crystal into cells of a manageable size. We show that these cells behave as nearly independent quantum registers, allowing for parallel entangling gates on all cells. The ability to reconfigure the optical potentials guarantees connectivity across the full ion-crystal, and also enables efficient mid-circuit measurements. We study the implementation of large-scale parallel multi-qubit entangling gates that operate simultaneously on all cells, and present a protocol to compensate for crosstalk errors, enabling full-scale usage of an extensively large register. We illustrate that this architecture is advantageous both for fault-tolerant digital quantum computation and for analog quantum simulations.

22. Dynamics of an SIR epidemic model with limited medical resources, revisited and corrected

Abstract

This paper generalizes and corrects a famous paper (more than 200 citations) concerning Hopf and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations due to L. Zhou and M. Fan, "Dynamics of an SIR epidemic model with limited medical resources revisited", in which we discovered a significant numerical error. Importantly, unlike the paper of Zhou and Fan and several other papers that followed them, we offer a notebook where the reader may recover all the results and modify them for analyzing similar models. Our calculations lead to the introduction of some interesting symbolic objects, "Groebner eliminated traces and determinants" - see (4.5), (4.6), which seem to have appeared here for the first time and which might be of independent interest. We hope our paper might serve as yet another alarm bell regarding the importance of accompanying papers involving complicated hand computations by electronic notebooks.

Abstract

Lip reading or visual speech recognition has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly because of hardware development and innovations in computer vision. While considerable progress has been obtained, most models have only been tested on a few large-scale datasets. This work addresses this shortcoming by analyzing several architectures and optimizations on the underrepresented, short-scale Romanian language dataset called Wild LRRo. Most notably, we compare different backend modules, demonstrating the effectiveness of adding ample regularization methods. We obtain state-of-the-art results using our proposed method, namely cross-lingual domain adaptation and unlabeled videos from English and German datasets to help the model learn language-invariant features. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Carriers of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants exhibit regional and global brain differences compared with noncarriers. However, interpreting regional differences is challenging if a global difference drives the regional brain differences. Intraindividual variability measures can be used to test for regional differences beyond global differences in brain structure. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging data were used to obtain regional brain values for 1q21.1 distal deletion (n = 30) and duplication (n = 27) and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion (n = 170) and duplication (n = 243) carriers and matched noncarriers (n = 2350). Regional intra-deviation scores, i.e., the standardized difference between an individuals regional difference and global difference, were used to test for regional differences that diverge from the global difference. RESULTS: For the 1q21.1 distal deletion carriers, cortical surface area for regions in the medial visual cortex, posterior cingulate, and temporal pole differed less and regions in the prefrontal and superior temporal cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical surface area. For the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion carriers, cortical thickness in regions in the medial visual cortex, auditory cortex, and temporal pole differed less and the prefrontal and somatosensory cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical thickness. CONCLUSIONS: We find evidence for regional effects beyond differences in global brain measures in 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants. The results provide new insight into brain profiling of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants, with the potential to increase understanding of the mechanisms involved in altered neurodevelopment.

Audience and Type of Curriculum: Audience and type of curriculum: This hybrid, asynchronous curriculum is designed for prehospital clinician colleagues, including but not limited to emergency medical technicians (EMT), advanced EMTs (AEMT), EMT-paramedics (EMT-P), critical care EMT-Ps (CCEMTP), critical care transport nurses (CCTN), and certified flight registered nurses (CFRN) to learn and practice ultrasound fundamentals in the setting of a standardized extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (E- FAST) exam.Length of Curriculum: Over a five-month curriculum, learners will perform a pre-test, review online module lectures, attend an ultrasound scanning workshop, and perform post-test examinations.Introduction: The extended-focused assessment with sonography in trauma (E-FAST) exam can identify intrathoracic and intraabdominal free fluid, as well as pneumothoraces. The E-FAST ultrasound exam has previously been taught to clinicians of various backgrounds in healthcare including emergency medical service (EMS). However, an open-access, systemized curriculum for teaching E-FAST exams to EMS clinicians has not been published.Educational Goals: By the end of these training activities, prehospital EMS learners will be able to demonstrate foundational ultrasound skills in scanning, interpretation, and artifact recognition by identifying pertinent organs and anatomically relevant structures for an E-FAST examination. Learners will differentiate between normal and pathologic E-FAST ultrasound images by identifying the presence of free fluid and lung sliding. Learners will also explain the clinical significance and application of detecting free fluid during an E- FAST scan.Educational Methods: The educational strategies used in this curriculum include a hybrid, asynchronous curriculum encompassing 2.5 hours of lectures derived from online learning modules and in-person review. In addition, learners will attend 2 hours of hands-on proctored ultrasound scanning practicing E-FAST examinations.Research Methods: An online 13-question pre-test was administered prior to the study. An online post-test and in-person scanning OSCEs were administered at least eight weeks after their scheduled workshop consisting of an online 13-question multiple-choice post-test, a confidence survey, and a hands-on E-FAST Objectively Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) session. A non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed between each pre-test and post-test metric to examine the statistical differences of paired data.Results: Post-test scores demonstrated statistically significant improvement in both image interpretation exams and ultrasound self-efficacy from the pre-test. The mean pre-test and post-test scores were 55.46% (7.21 ± 1.99) and 84.23% (10.89 ± 1.59) correct out of 13 questions, respectively (p < 0.0001). Participants surveyed an increase in self-efficacy reflected by a Likert scale for ultrasound usage and image interpretation (p < 0.005). Abstract

The bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus is ubiquitous in tropical and temperate waters throughout the world and causes infections in humans resulting from water exposure and from ingestion of contaminated raw or undercooked seafood, such as oysters. We describe a nationwide outbreak of enteric infections caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Australia during September 2021–January 2022. A total of 268 persons were linked with the outbreak, 97% of whom reported consuming Australia-grown oysters. Cases were reported from all states and territories of Australia. The outbreak comprised 2 distinct strains of V. parahaemolyticus, sequence types 417 and 50. We traced oysters with V. parahaemolyticus proliferation back to a common growing region within the state of South Australia. The outbreak prompted a national recall of oysters and subsequent improvements in postharvest processing of the shellfish.

Municipal (for urban and rural) waste accounts about 7% to 10% of total waste generated in the Union. However, this waste stream is one of the most complex to manage, and the way it is operated is generally a good indication of the quality in a country’s overall waste management system. The challenges of municipal waste management are determined by the fact that it is very complex and mixed in composition, is in the close proximity to citizens, it has a very high degree of public visibility and has consequences for the environment and the health of the population. Therefore, municipal waste management requires a very complex system, including an efficient collection scheme, an efficient sorting system and proper tracking of waste streams, the active involvement of citizens and businesses, the adaptation of infrastructure to the specific composition of waste and a detailed financing system. Countries that have developed efficient municipal waste management systems generally perform better in terms of overall waste management, including the achievement of recycling targets. In 2018, the EU set ambitious new targets for recycling, packaging waste and landfills. The aim of these new rules is to promote the transition to a more sustainable model, known as the circular economy. In March 2020, the European Commission presented an Action Plan on the Circular Economy aimed at reducing waste through better resource management.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the present scoping review is to identify sources of heterogeneity in reporting domains that have the potential to improve surgical decision-making in reverse shoulder arthroplasty associated with glenoid bone grafting. Methods: A scoping review was conducted according to the JBI and PRISMA ScR guidelines. Articles covering glenoid bone grafting at the time of reverse shoulder replacement, published between 2012 and 2022 in MEDLINE, Scopus, Epistemonikos, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, were searched. Reporting of core outcome measures, as well as prosthesis-related variables, rehabilitation protocols, radiographic evaluation methods, and bone graft incorporation assessments, were collected. Results: For the final analysis, a total of 14 articles were considered. There were 649 operated shoulders with a mean patient age of 72 years, ranging from 48 to 85 years. Analysis of preoperative ranges of motion and patient-reported outcome measures revealed increased heterogeneity in patient selection between studies. Reporting of implant-related parameters was the most inconsistent. Rehabilitation protocols were scarcely reported. Assessment of graft incorporation and radiographic evaluation of choice revealed that there is no consistent method or measurement and the clinical relevance of radiolucent lines at the graft-glenoid bone interface is unclear. Conclusion: Addressing implant-related reporting gaps has the highest potential to improve surgical decision-making and provide orthopedic surgeons with a more comprehensive understanding of published results on glenoid bone grafting at the time of primary reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

39. Trait Resilience as a Moderator between Personality Dysfunction and Caregiving Stress in Caregivers of Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

Background: Long-term care of a relative with a disability is associated with negative consequences on the caregiver's mental health. Therefore, investigating how some personality traits, such as resilience, protect caregivers with dysfunctional personality traits from caregiving stress is necessary. This study examines the moderating role of resilience in the relationship between caregiver's personality dysfunction and care stress. Methods: A total of 224 family caregivers of children and adults with developmental disabilities participated in this cross-sectional research. They completed self-report measures of resilience, personality dysfunction, and care stress. Results: The results show that medium and high levels of resilience protect familial caregivers from the adverse effects of personality dysfunction on stress. The relationship is maintained for three of the five dysfunctional personality traits (antagonism, disinhibition, and psychoticism). Conclusions: From a theoretical point of view, the results show the contribution of the dimensional personality model to the study of caregiving stress. From a practical standpoint, the results can be used to optimise the resilience of familial caregivers, providing them with tools to take better care of their relatives.

Abstract

Surgical masks have played a crucial role in healthcare facilities to protect against respiratory and infectious diseases, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the synthetic fibers, mainly made of polypropylene, used in their production may adversely affect the environment and human health. Recent studies have confirmed the presence of microplastics and fibers in human lungs and have related these synthetic particles with the occurrence of pulmonary ground glass nodules. Using a piston system to simulate human breathing, this study investigates the role of surgical masks as a direct source of inhalation of microplastics. Results reveal the release of particles of sizes ranging from nanometers (300 nm) to millimeters (~2 mm) during normal breathing conditions, raising concerns about the potential health risks. Notably, large visible particles (> 1 mm) were observed to be ejected from masks with limited wear after only a few breathing cycles. Given the widespread use of masks by healthcare workers and the potential future need for mask usage by the general population during seasonal infectious diseases or new pandemics, developing face masks using safe materials for both users and the environment is imperative., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

A very large class of ODE epidemic models (2.2) discussed in this paper enjoys the property of admitting also an integral renewal formulation, with respect to an "age of infection kernel" a(t) which has a matrix exponential form (3.2). We observe first that a very short proof of this fact is available when there is only one susceptible compartment, and when its associated "new infections" matrix has rank one. In this case, a(t) normalized to have integral 1, is precisely the probabilistic law which governs the time spent in all the "infectious states associated to the susceptible compartment", and the normalization is precisely the basic replacement number. The Laplace transform (LT) of a(t) is a generalization of the basic replacement number, and its structure reflects the laws of the times spent in each infectious state. Subsequently, we show that these facts admit extensions to processes with several susceptible classes, provided that all of them have a new infections matrix of rank one. These results reveal that the ODE epidemic models highlighted below have also interesting probabilistic properties.

Abstract

With the rise of bidirectional encoder representations from Transformer models in natural language processing, the speech community has adopted some of their development methodologies. Therefore, the Wav2Vec models were introduced to reduce the data required to obtain state-of-the-art results. This work leverages this knowledge and improves the performance of the pre-trained speech models by simply replacing the fine-tuning dense layer with a lateral inhibition layer inspired by the biological process. Our experiments on Romanian, a low-resource language, show an average improvement of 12.5% word error rate (WER) using the lateral inhibition layer. In addition, we obtain state-of-the-art results on both the Romanian Speech Corpus and the Robin Technical Acquisition Corpus with 1.78% WER and 29.64% WER, respectively., Comment: Accepted at TSP2023

45. Multilingual Multiword Expression Identification Using Lateral Inhibition and Domain Adaptation

Abstract

Correctly identifying multiword expressions (MWEs) is an important task for most natural language processing systems since their misidentification can result in ambiguity and misunderstanding of the underlying text. In this work, we evaluate the performance of the mBERT model for MWE identification in a multilingual context by training it on all 14 languages available in version 1.2 of the PARSEME corpus. We also incorporate lateral inhibition and language adversarial training into our methodology to create language-independent embeddings and improve its capabilities in identifying multiword expressions. The evaluation of our models shows that the approach employed in this work achieves better results compared to the best system of the PARSEME 1.2 competition, MTLB-STRUCT, on 11 out of 14 languages for global MWE identification and on 12 out of 14 languages for unseen MWE identification. Additionally, averaged across all languages, our best approach outperforms the MTLB-STRUCT system by 1.23% on global MWE identification and by 4.73% on unseen global MWE identification., Comment: Accepted at Mathematics 2023

Abstract

Satire detection and sentiment analysis are intensively explored natural language processing (NLP) tasks that study the identification of the satirical tone from texts and extracting sentiments in relationship with their targets. In languages with fewer research resources, an alternative is to produce artificial examples based on character-level adversarial processes to overcome dataset size limitations. Such samples are proven to act as a regularization method, thus improving the robustness of models. In this work, we improve the well-known NLP models (i.e., Convolutional Neural Networks, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM, Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs), and Bidirectional GRUs) with adversarial training and capsule networks. The fine-tuned models are used for satire detection and sentiment analysis tasks in the Romanian language. Abstract

Developing natural language processing (NLP) systems for social media analysis remains an important topic in artificial intelligence research. This article introduces RoBERTweet, the first Transformer architecture trained on Romanian tweets. Our RoBERTweet comes in two versions, following the base and large architectures of BERT. The corpus used for pre-training the models represents a novelty for the Romanian NLP community and consists of all tweets collected from 2008 to 2022. Experiments show that RoBERTweet models outperform the previous general-domain Romanian and multilingual language models on three NLP tasks with tweet inputs: emotion detection, sexist language identification, and named entity recognition. Abstract

Multiword expressions are a key ingredient for developing large-scale and linguistically sound natural language processing technology. This paper describes our improvements in automatically identifying Romanian multiword expressions on the corpus released for the PARSEME v1.2 shared task. Our approach assumes a multilingual perspective based on the recently introduced lateral inhibition layer and adversarial training to boost the performance of the employed multilingual language models. With the help of these two methods, we improve the F1-score of XLM-RoBERTa by approximately 2.7% on unseen multiword expressions, the main task of the PARSEME 1.2 edition. 49. Vision Transformers with Mixed-Resolution Tokenization

Abstract

Vision Transformer models process input images by dividing them into a spatially regular grid of equal-size patches. Conversely, Transformers were originally introduced over natural language sequences, where each token represents a subword - a chunk of raw data of arbitrary size. In this work, we apply this approach to Vision Transformers by introducing a novel image tokenization scheme, replacing the standard uniform grid with a mixed-resolution sequence of tokens, where each token represents a patch of arbitrary size. Using the Quadtree algorithm and a novel saliency scorer, we construct a patch mosaic where low-saliency areas of the image are processed in low resolution, routing more of the model's capacity to important image regions. Using the same architecture as vanilla ViTs, our Quadformer models achieve substantial accuracy gains on image classification when controlling for the computational budget. Abstract

Abstract Autosomal dominant Fanconi syndrome due to a GATM variant (GATM‐FS), causes accumulation of misfolded arginine‐glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) in proximal renal tubules leading to cellular injury. GATM‐FS presents during childhood and progresses to end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD) in adults. We study creatine metabolism in two individuals of unrelated families with a known GATM variant and the effect of creatine supplementation in kidney organoids. Plasma and urine metabolites were measured by mass spectrometry. Brain creatine was assessed by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Guanidinoacetate (GAA) synthesis by the AGAT mutant was measured in patient‐derived immortalized lymphocytes using stable isotopes of arginine and glycine. The effect of creatine on GATM expression was assessed in human kidney cells and organoids. Several family members from two unrelated families were diagnosed with Fanconi syndrome and had the c.1022C>T (p. P341L) variant in GATM. Two affected individuals in both families had moderately reduced plasma GAA levels. In comparison to wild‐type cells, GAA synthesis by patient‐derived GATMP341L+/− lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL) was reduced, but not absent as in GATM cells from a patient with creatine deficiency syndrome. In vitro studies on human kidney organoids revealed reduced AGAT expression after treatment with creatine. Finally, we showed in one patient that creatine supplementation (5 g daily) substantially increased plasma creatine levels. We report low plasma and urine GAA in patients with autosomal dominant GATM‐FS and show that creatine downregulates AGAT in human kidney cells.
